0:00Mark 13:1 [music]
0:02As he was going out of the temple, one
0:04of his disciples said to him, "Teacher,
0:07behold, what wonderful stones and what
0:10wonderful buildings." [music]
0:13Jesus said to him, "Do you see these
0:15great buildings? [music]
0:18Not one stone will be left upon another
0:20[music]
0:21which will not be torn down."
0:25The very thing they were aed by, amazed
0:28at, commenting on, the thing that
0:30impressed the flesh. He says, "Not one
0:34stone of this will will will remain."
0:38As [music] he was sitting on the Mount
0:39of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and
0:42James and John and Andrew were
0:44questioning him privately, "Tell us when
0:48will these things be? And what will be
0:51the sign when all [music] these things
0:52are going to be fulfilled?
0:56And Jesus began to say to them, "See to
0:59it that no one misleads you.
1:01Many will come in my name, saying, I am
1:04he, and will mislead many."
1:08When you hear of wars and rumors of
1:10wars, do not be frightened.
1:13Those things must take place, but that
1:15is not yet the end.
1:18For nation will rise up against nation
1:20and kingdom against kingdom. There will
1:22be earthquakes in various places. There
1:25will also be famines. These things are
1:27merely the beginning of birth pangs. So
1:31he tells them that something terrible is
1:32going to happen.
1:34And he is speaking of the physical
1:37temple in Jerusalem, but he's also
1:39speaking of the larger spiritual temple
1:43of the church.
1:45And so if we ask, is he talking about
1:48the sacking of Jerusalem or is he
1:50talking about the end of the world? The
1:52answer is yes. That's how prophecy
1:54works. It's not just this, and it's not
1:56just that. It's fulfilled on one level,
2:00fulfilled on a greater level, and
2:02fulfilled on a final level. Usually in a
2:05one, two, three sort of accelerating
2:08manifestation.
2:10So there's a sense in which he's talking
2:11about the destruction of the physical
2:14temple in Jerusalem. But then there are
2:15things that he says here that have to go
2:18beyond that. So it's not either or. It's
2:21both and. It's already fulfilled but not
2:24yet fulfilled.
2:30And and the main concern that he has
2:31when they ask him when are these things
2:33going to be the first thing he wants to
2:34bring home to them is it's not going to
2:36be as fast as you think. and be
2:39reluctant to believe people who are
2:41telling you it's going to be really
2:43fast. When you hear it's going to be
2:45this bad and there's wars and rumors of
2:47wars and all these things, do not think
2:50that the end has come.
2:53He says nation will rise up against
2:55nation. That's ethnos against ethnos.
2:58That's pointing to the racism that we
3:00see in our world today. Races will rise
3:03up against races and kingdom against
3:06kingdom. Now, that can't just be
3:08referring to Jerusalem being sacked
3:10because he's saying all over the world,
3:12kingdoms are going to rise against
3:14kingdoms. Those are the nations creating
3:16war with each other as a result of the
3:18races creating war with each other.
3:21That's not just a Jerusalem discussion.
3:25There will be famines. These things are
3:27merely the beginnings of birth panges.
3:31So, he's telling us that the final end
3:33is going to come like birth panges. A
3:36woman feels what's like childbirth in
3:39small doses again and again and again
3:42and they get more frequent and they get
3:44more intense until finally the real
3:46birth comes. That's what the final end
3:49is going to be like. But be on your
3:52guard for they will deliver you to the
3:54courts and you will be foggged in the
3:56synagogues and you will stand before
3:59governors and kings for my sake as a
4:02testimony to them. The gospel must first
4:05be preached to all nations.
4:08When they arrest you and hand you over,
4:11do not worry beforehand about what you
4:13are to say, but say whatever is given
4:15you in that hour. For it is not you who
4:18speak, but it is the Holy Spirit.
4:22Brother will betray brother to death,
4:24and a father his child, and children
4:26will rise up against parents, and have
4:29them put to death. You will be hated by
4:31all because of my name's sake, but the
4:34one who endures to the end will be
4:36saved.
4:38But when you see the abomination of
4:41desolation standing where it should not
4:43be, let the reader understand, then
4:47those who are in Judea must flee to the
4:49mountains. The one who is on the
4:51housetop must not go down or go in to
4:54get anything out of his house. And the
4:56one who is in the field must not turn
4:58back to get his coat. But woe to those
5:00who are pregnant and to those who are
5:02nursing babies in those days. But pray
5:05that it may not happen in the winter.
5:07For those days will be a time of
5:10tribulation
5:11such as has not occurred since the
5:14beginning of the creation which God
5:16created until now and never will be.
5:21Unless the Lord had shortened those
5:23days, no life would have been saved. But
5:28for the sake of the elect whom he chose,
5:30he shortened the days. And then if
5:33anyone says to you, "Behold, here is the
5:35Christ," or, "Behold, he is there," do
5:37not believe him. For false Christs and
5:39false prophets will arise and will show
5:42signs and wonders in order to lead
5:44astray, if possible the elect. But take
5:48heed, behold, I have told you everything
5:51in advance.
5:53So there's a lot here to process and
5:56this is simultaneously talking about the
5:58sacking of Jerusalem in part and it is
6:01talking about the great tribulation and
6:03the final end. Some of this cannot be
6:07talking about the sacking of Jerusalem.
6:08It has to be referring to the final
6:11tribulation and the final end and return
6:13of the Lord because he says it's going
6:15to be a time of trouble such as the
6:17world has never seen nor ever will see.
6:20As horrible as the sacking of Jerusalem
6:23was in 70 AD, it does not hold a candle
6:26to the Holocaust
6:28during World War II. So, it can't just
6:31be talking about that. Furthermore, much
6:34of what he's saying seems so much
6:37broader than that. He says that if these
6:40days had not been cut short, no life
6:44would survive. He says it's the worst
6:47trouble that has ever occurred since the
6:49creation of the world all the way to the
6:51end. Now, that is not talking just about
6:54the sacking of Jerusalem, but it is
6:57pointing to that. And the sacking of
6:58Jerusalem is a type of the great
7:01tribulation. That's when the temple was
7:03made of stones. Now the temple is made
7:05of lively stones. That's when the temple
7:07was ruled by a religious elite that had
7:10shut the doors to the spirit of God. Now
7:14the church is largely ruled by that same
7:16elite who has shut the doors to the
7:18spirit of God.
7:20He says that false Christ will arise.
7:23People will be very convincing. There
7:24will be false signs and lying wonders.
7:27signs of technology, lying wonders of
7:30powerful atomic energy and electricity.
7:34Anyone who saw the modern world that we
7:37live in would think it was a magical
7:39power that had been given. It would be
7:42like a false sign and a lying wonder. He
7:45says that this time is going to be
7:47marked by brother betraying brother to
7:49death. A father his child. Children will
7:53rise up against parents and have them
7:55put to death. and the church, the people
7:57of God will be hated by all because of
8:00my name. So this is going to be a time
8:03when love fails, when covenants fall
8:06apart. This is describing the apostasy
8:10that Paul speaks of when he says that
8:13the falling away must come first. The
8:15great divorce must occur first before
8:18the Lord's return. This is a time when
8:21we're going to see a a massive increase
8:25of betrayal and unfaithfulness and
8:28infidelity on every level. Relationships
8:32are going to fail. One of the fruits
8:35that we've got to look for in the true
8:36church is relationships that are
8:39succeeding, covenants that are holding
8:41together.
8:44because the other is the apostasy
8:47and it's pointing toward the end of all
8:50things.
8:53Verse 24, but in those days after that
8:56tribulation,
8:59after that tribulation, the sun will be
9:02darkened and the moon will not give its
9:04light.
9:06Now, this is this is metaphorically
9:09similar to what happened in Jerusalem.
9:12But the sun was not darkened and the
9:14moon did not fall from the heavens. It
9:16didn't it was not turned to blood as is
9:19described in Revelations. That is
9:21pointing toward the end. In those days
9:24after that tribulation, the sun will be
9:27darkened and the moon will not give its
9:28light and the stars will be falling from
9:31the heaven and the powers that are in
9:33the heavens will be shaken. Then they
9:36will see the son of man coming in clouds
9:39with great power and glory. Jesus did
9:43not come in clouds with great power and
9:45glory. And he says they will see him
9:48coming in the clouds. So this is not
9:50just about Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a
9:53type of the greater collapse of the
9:57church and its influence on the whole
9:59world that is coming in the apostasy and
10:02the great tribulation.
10:04And then he will send forth the angels
10:08after the tribulation,
10:11after the darkening of the sun, after
10:13the moon no longer gives its light,
10:15after the son of man is seen in the
10:18clouds. He's giving chronology. Then
10:22that's a chronological statement. Then
10:25he will send forth the angels and will
10:27gather his elect from the four winds,
10:30from the farthest end of the earth to
10:32the farthest end of the heavens. And
10:34here again we see he is not focused on
10:37Jerusalem. He is focused on the saved
10:39people of God in the entire planet.
10:43This is the rapture and it occurs after
10:46all of these other events.
10:49Now learn the parable from the fig tree.
10:52He takes them back to Markap 11 and he
10:56says, "The fig tree, the fig tree that
10:59had leaves and was cursed and withered,
11:02that fig tree is going to get its leaves
11:03back."
11:06Now learn the parable of the fig tree.
11:09When its branch has already become
11:11tender and put forth its leaves, you
11:15know that summer is near. The fig tree
11:18is a type of Israel. So what he's saying
11:22here prophetically is look at the people
11:25the nation of Israel when the nation of
11:28Israel is reborn and you can see that
11:32it's putting forth its leaf then you
11:34know that summer the great tribulation
11:38which he's called tribulation summer in
11:41the parable of the sewer you know that
11:43summer is coming summer has come [sighs]
11:47now learn the parable from the fig tree
11:49when its branch has already become
11:50tender and put forth its leaves, you
11:52know that summer is near. Even so, you
11:55too, when you see these things
11:57happening, recognize that he is near,
12:00right at the door.
12:03Truly, I say to you, this generation
12:06will not pass away until all these
12:08things take place.
12:11Now this term generation can be
12:13confusing
12:16but it's it can be translated this race.
12:21When Peter says you are a holy nation, a
12:25holy race, it's the same word.
12:28So he's saying this people who are born
12:32of the Holy Spirit, who are engrafted
12:36into the regeneration,
12:39this holy race of righteous people will
12:42not pass away until all these things
12:45take place. Now, some say he could be
12:48speaking of the fig tree race, the
12:50Jewish people, that they won't pass
12:51away, and that could be it. But it seems
12:54more likely that he's speaking of the
12:56regeneration.
12:58He's definitely not saying that the son
13:01of man is going to return before the
13:03apostles die because he did not.
13:07Truly I say to you, this generation,
13:09this holy race born of the spirit will
13:12not pass away until all these things
13:14take place. God will still have his
13:16people on the earth is what he's saying.
13:19Heaven and earth will pass away, but my
13:22words will not pass away. So this people
13:24is going to be the incarnated expression
13:27of his word on the earth. The word still
13:29becoming flesh. Heaven and earth will
13:31pass away, but my words will not pass
13:33away. But of that day or hour, no one
13:36knows, not even the angels in heaven,
13:39nor the son, but the father alone. Now,
13:42somebody will say, "If the son does not
13:44know the day or the hour and the father
13:46does, doesn't that show a power and a
13:49divine attribute that the father has
13:52that the son does not have?" Well, Jesus
13:55is saying that in his earthbound
13:58existence, he is living in what is
14:00called kinosis, which is what Paul is
14:03speaking of in Philippians when he says
14:05that Jesus was in very nature God, but
14:08he emptied himself. So he put off from
14:11himself some of his divine rights until
14:14glorification. When he ascended, there's
14:18nothing that the son does not know. But
14:20in his earthbound existence, he had
14:22postponed some of that knowledge so that
14:25he could be made like us in every way
14:27and be a faithful high [music] priest
14:28who was tempted in like manner just as
14:31we are. So there was some of the
14:32knowledge that Jesus was not in
14:34possession of. But in glorification he
14:37has possession of everything. But of the
14:40day or hour no one knows, not even the
14:42angels in heaven, nor the son, but the
14:44father alone. Take heed, keep on the
14:46alert, for you do not know when the
14:49appointed time will come. It is like a
14:52man away on a journey, who upon leaving
14:55his house and putting his slaves in
14:57charge, assigning to each one his task,
15:01also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on
15:04the alert. Therefore, be on the alert,
15:06for you do not know when the master of
15:09the house is coming, whether in the
15:11evening, at midnight, or when the
15:13rooster crows, [music] or in the
15:15morning, in case he should come suddenly
15:18and find you asleep. What I say to you,
15:21I say to all. Be on the alert. So he
15:26starts the chapter by telling them these
15:29things won't happen until big events
15:33happen first. But once the big events
15:36happen, once nation rises against
15:39nation, once apostasy marks the age,
15:42once betrayal is on the rise, once we're
15:46living in this state of the big changes,
15:50then you should be on the alert. You
15:52should be looking. And we should all be
15:54on the alert because in a sense, the
15:56Lord may be coming for us individually
15:59or for our region, our country, our
16:01time. But he's saying in the in the
16:04broader sense even his return is going
16:06to be a surprise to everyone.
