- 0:00Mark 11:1
- 0:02As they approached Jerusalem at Bethage
- 0:05and Bethany near the Mount of Olives, he
- 0:08sent two of his disciples [music] and
- 0:10said to them, "Go into the village
- 0:12opposite you, and immediately as you
- 0:14enter it, you will find [music] a colt
- 0:16tied there, on which no one has yet ever
- 0:19sat. Untie it and bring it here." If
- 0:23anyone says to you, "Why are you doing
- 0:25this?" [music] You say the Lord has need
- 0:29of it and immediately [music] he will
- 0:31send it back here.
- 0:33They went away and found a colt tied at
- 0:35the door outside in the street and they
- 0:38untied it.
- 0:40Some of the bystanders were saying to
- 0:42them, "What are you doing untying the
- 0:44colt?"
- 0:46They spoke to them just as Jesus had
- 0:48told them, and they gave them
- 0:50permission.
- 0:52They brought the colt to Jesus and put
- 0:54their coats on it. And he sat on it. And
- 0:58many spread their coats [music] in the
- 1:00road, and others spread leafy branches
- 1:03which they had cut from the fields.
- 1:06Those who went in front and those who
- 1:08followed were shouting, "Hosana!
- 1:12Blessed is he who comes in the name of
- 1:14the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom
- 1:18of our father David. Hosanna.
- 1:22Now, this is clearly not a spontaneous
- 1:27moment. This is an orchestrated moment.
- 1:29Jesus knows [music] exactly what he's
- 1:32doing. He's going into Jerusalem. And
- 1:35he's been saying through the previous
- 1:36chapters that he's going there to be
- 1:38betrayed, to be tried, killed, and he's
- 1:42going [music] to rise on the third day.
- 1:45But he's also going to fulfill the hopes
- 1:48of the Davidic Messiah. So the last
- 1:51person to call him the son of David is
- 1:53Barardemus who cries out son of David
- 1:57which is like saying expected messianic
- 2:00savior.
- 2:01And here the people are doing the same
- 2:04thing. They're saying hosana which means
- 2:08save us now or save now. And they're
- 2:11saying, "Blessed is the coming kingdom
- 2:15of our father David. Hosana in the
- 2:18highest." They're thinking, "This is the
- 2:20moment." And it is true that the coming
- 2:24kingdom will happen in Jerusalem. And it
- 2:28is true that the conquering disarming
- 2:31moment where he takes the power away
- 2:33from his enemy, it will happen outside
- 2:36Jerusalem. But it's not going to happen
- 2:38in the way they expect. One of the
- 2:41things that's interesting is in
- 2:43fulfillment of Zechariah 9, he does not
- 2:46come in riding a horse with an
- 2:49entourage. They would have expected
- 2:51that. They would have expected uh the
- 2:54conqueror to come in galloping on this
- 2:56beautiful steed. Instead, he doesn't
- 2:59just choose a donkey. He chooses an
- 3:02unbroke cult, the full of a donkey
- 3:05that's never been ridden on before.
- 3:08And I guess the message in that is
- 3:11probably multi-layered,
- 3:13but he's saying, I'm not coming in the
- 3:18manner and preparation and forms you
- 3:20expect. I'm going to use
- 3:24um vessels, instruments, donkeys instead
- 3:28of horses and donkeys that have never
- 3:31been trained at that. And maybe that's
- 3:34indicative of the kind of people that
- 3:37are going to spread his message, the
- 3:39kind of people that are going to carry
- 3:41this incredible new good news to the
- 3:43world. Maybe they and their lack of
- 3:46education and their lack of training are
- 3:48kind of typified in this donkey. Of
- 3:52course, Zechariah says, "Behold, your
- 3:54king comes to you meek and lowly and
- 3:58riding on a donkey, the full of a
- 4:01donkey." So there's something of
- 4:03humility and loneliness that he's trying
- 4:05to communicate in this entry.
- 4:08Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into
- 4:10the temple and after looking around at
- 4:13everything, he left for Bethany with the
- 4:1612 since it was already late. So he
- 4:19comes in and the writer tells us that he
- 4:22looks around at everything and then he
- 4:25leaves.
- 4:26On the next day when they had left
- 4:29Bethany, he became hungry. So the next
- 4:32morning they're leaving Bethany and
- 4:34heading back to Jerusalem and he becomes
- 4:37hungry.
- 4:39Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf,
- 4:43he went to see if perhaps he would find
- 4:46anything on it. And when he came to it,
- 4:49he found nothing but leaves, for it was
- 4:52not the season for figs.
- 4:55He said to it, "May no one ever eat
- 4:59fruit from you again."
- 5:02And his disciples were listening.
- 5:05So this fig tree is not
- 5:10an example of bad temper before
- 5:12breakfast.
- 5:14This fig tree is symbolic
- 5:17of the religious system that he is in
- 5:21conflict with. from Isaiah and
- 5:24throughout Jesus's ministry, the fig
- 5:27tree is symbolic of the Jewish religious
- 5:30system.
- 5:32And we remember that when the religious
- 5:35Jews came to John the Baptist to be
- 5:38baptized like the rest of Judea, John
- 5:41said something very specific to them. He
- 5:43said, "You brood of vipers, who warned
- 5:46you to flee the wrath to come? go and
- 5:49bear fruits in keeping with your
- 5:52repentance and then come back and I can
- 5:56baptize you. But he says if not the axe
- 5:59is laid at the root of the tree and
- 6:02every tree that does not bear fruit is
- 6:03going to be cut down and thrown into the
- 6:06fire. So we have to remember that the
- 6:09religious Jews came to John and said,"I
- 6:13want to be baptized." And John said,
- 6:15"Okay, if you want to be baptized, you
- 6:17need to do something first. You need to
- 6:20bear fruits in keeping with that
- 6:22repentance that's supposedly happening
- 6:24in your life." And they went away, but
- 6:27they never came back. They never came
- 6:29back and said, "John, we bore the
- 6:31fruits. Here's what's changed in our
- 6:34life."
- 6:36They just went away and never came back.
- 6:38So now Jesus is coming to the temple.
- 6:40John has been dead for a while. But this
- 6:43is going to be another moment where
- 6:46these same religious powers are going to
- 6:48be tested by God. And what's going to be
- 6:51revealed is whether they have come to
- 6:52repentance.
- 6:54And repentance means the dethroning or
- 6:57the uprooting of self-will that has
- 7:00taken the place of God's authority in
- 7:02our lives. So the fruit of repentance
- 7:05would be the recognition of God's
- 7:07authority to say I am a sheep. I hear
- 7:10his voice. I know his voice and I accept
- 7:13his authority in my life. The evidence
- 7:16that the repentance has not occurred
- 7:18would be if they don't know his
- 7:20authority, they don't know his name, his
- 7:22voice, then they're not his. It's
- 7:25because their authority has eclipsed
- 7:28God's.
- 7:30Then they came to Jerusalem. So, so when
- 7:33he comes to the fig tree, what he sees
- 7:35is appearances. He doesn't see
- 7:37substance. He doesn't see life. He just
- 7:40sees leaves,
- 7:42lots of leaves, lots of good, healthy
- 7:45looking appearances. But there's no
- 7:47actual nutrients of God's grace coming
- 7:51from that tree. Then they came to
- 7:53Jerusalem and he entered the temple and
- 7:56began to drive out
- 7:59those who were buying and selling in the
- 8:03temple and overturned the tables of the
- 8:06money changers and the seats of those
- 8:09who were selling doves.
- 8:12And he would not permit anyone to carry
- 8:15merchandise through the temple. And he
- 8:17began to teach and say to them, "Is it
- 8:20not written, my house shall be called a
- 8:23house of prayer for all the nations? You
- 8:26have made it a robber's den."
- 8:29This is
- 8:31a shocking display because we have this
- 8:34juxtiposition.
- 8:36When Jesus enters
- 8:39the arena of political expectation, he's
- 8:42riding a donkey. He's meek and lowly.
- 8:47He's humble. He's on a cult. It just
- 8:51does not feel like a political
- 8:54triumphal entry, right? They're saying,
- 8:57"Hosana." But when he comes into the
- 8:59sanctuary that represents the spiritual
- 9:02realm of God, he behaves very
- 9:05differently. This is intense. It says
- 9:08that he comes in and he begins to drive
- 9:12out those who are buying and selling in
- 9:16the temple. And he's not just chasing
- 9:18them out of the temple. He's grabbing
- 9:20the tables and flipping them over. He's
- 9:24grabbing the chairs that they were
- 9:26sitting on and tossing them aside. This
- 9:29is anger. This is indignation.
- 9:33This is disgust.
- 9:35This is a kind of cleansing that
- 9:38suggests authority,
- 9:41that suggests he has a right to be here
- 9:44and fix what's wrong.
- 9:47When he does this, verse 18, the chief
- 9:50priests and the scribes heard this, you
- 9:54think, and began seeking how to destroy
- 9:58him.
- 9:59So when they see him behaving like this
- 10:01in the temple, they want to destroy him.
- 10:05They are furious
- 10:08for they were afraid of him.
- 10:12For the whole crowd was astonished at
- 10:15his teaching. H
- 10:19he is angry that the church has become
- 10:23all about money. He is disgusted that
- 10:28the message
- 10:30of communion with God in the temple has
- 10:33become merchandise
- 10:35and moneymaking and selling and buying
- 10:39and changing money.
- 10:42When evening came, [clears throat] they
- 10:44would go out of the city. As they were
- 10:47passing by in the morning, they saw the
- 10:49fig tree withered from the roots up.
- 10:54Being reminded, Peter said to him,
- 10:56"Rabbi, look, the fig tree which you
- 10:59cursed has withered." And Jesus
- 11:02answered, saying to him, "Have faith in
- 11:04God."
- 11:07Truly, I say to you, whoever says to
- 11:10this mountain, "Be [clears throat] taken
- 11:12up and cast into the sea," and does not
- 11:15doubt in his heart, but believes that
- 11:17what he says is going to happen, it will
- 11:19be granted him. Therefore, I say to you,
- 11:21all things for which you pray and ask,
- 11:23believe that you have received them, and
- 11:25they will be granted to you.
- 11:28Whenever you stand praying, forgive if
- 11:30you have anything against anyone, so
- 11:33that your father who is in heaven will
- 11:34also forgive you your transgressions.
- 11:37But if you do not forgive, neither will
- 11:39your father who is in heaven forgive
- 11:41your transgressions.
- 11:43So in the morning, he curses the fig
- 11:46tree. The fig tree represents the Jewish
- 11:50religious system that knows how to keep
- 11:52up appearances but does not know how to
- 11:55give grace. And one of the graces that
- 11:58it does not know how to give is
- 11:59forgiveness.
- 12:01One of the graces that it does not know
- 12:02how to give is healing. [clears throat]
- 12:05Is help to the needy. In the other
- 12:07gospels it says that he chased out the
- 12:09money changers and he welcomed in the
- 12:11blind and the children and the cripples.
- 12:14They don't know how to give help to the
- 12:16broken.
- 12:18So when they pass by the fig tree, they
- 12:21see that it is already withered the next
- 12:22morning. And Peter's astonished and he
- 12:25points it out to Jesus. And Jesus says,
- 12:26"Have faith in God."
- 12:29because it's going to take faith for
- 12:32Peter and the apostles to look at the
- 12:36mountain of this temple pride, the
- 12:39mountain of this religious system and
- 12:42believe that they can do God's will in
- 12:44spite of it. And he's saying, you're
- 12:47going to speak words to this fig tree.
- 12:50You're going to speak words to this
- 12:52religious system built on appearances,
- 12:54and it's going to dissolve. It's going
- 12:56to wither by the next morning. You're
- 12:59going to speak words to this mountain of
- 13:02religious pride. Not any old mountain.
- 13:04This mountain. This mountain of the
- 13:07temple and its rebellion against God. It
- 13:10looks so impossible to you. It looks so
- 13:13powerful to you. It looks so permanent.
- 13:15It's going to crucify me. It's going to
- 13:18scourge you. It's going to challenge
- 13:19you. But you're going to speak words to
- 13:22the man at the gate beautiful that are
- 13:24going to bring real fruit, that are
- 13:25going to bring real grace. You're going
- 13:27to speak words that are going to bring
- 13:29forgiveness.
- 13:30And this mountain that seems like it's
- 13:32going to be here forever, it's going to
- 13:34be thrown into the sea. It's going to be
- 13:36scattered among the Gentiles. It's going
- 13:39to be nowhere to be found. Not one stone
- 13:41is going to be left upon another.
- 13:43>> [snorts]
- 13:43>> All of this is metaphorical of the kind
- 13:46of faith he wants to give his disciples
- 13:49to move in the power of the spirit to
- 13:52speak the word of God even in the face
- 13:54of a system that looks so powerful.
- 13:59They came again to Jerusalem. And as he
- 14:01was walking in the temple, the chief
- 14:04priests and scribes and elders came to
- 14:06him and began saying to him, "By what
- 14:10authority are you doing these things? Or
- 14:13who gave you this authority to do these
- 14:16things?"
- 14:18And the the tacit accusation is we
- 14:23didn't give you this authority. So where
- 14:25did you get it?
- 14:28what is the source of your authority
- 14:29because we're the ones in charge and we
- 14:33don't approve what you're doing.
- 14:37And Jesus said to them, I will ask you
- 14:41one question
- 14:44and you answer me and then I will tell
- 14:48you by what authority I do these things.
- 14:52So, this question is going to get to the
- 14:55heart of the problem. It's going to
- 14:58reveal why there's no fruit. And here's
- 15:02the question.
- 15:04Was the baptism of John from heaven or
- 15:08from men? Answer me.
- 15:13Now, he's basically saying to them, you
- 15:16went out asking for baptism. John told
- 15:19you you needed to walk out repentance
- 15:21and bear fruit in keeping with
- 15:23repentance and you never got baptized.
- 15:27So, let's go ahead and settle the
- 15:28question.
- 15:30Was that baptism you sought from God or
- 15:32from man?
- 15:35Because if it had been from God, then
- 15:38you should have gone and borne the
- 15:39fruits in keeping with the repentance.
- 15:41But if it was from man, why did you seek
- 15:44it?
- 15:47Answer me. He says,
- 15:50they began reasoning among themselves.
- 15:53This isn't a matter of truth or
- 15:55falsehood. This isn't a matter of God or
- 15:58man. This is a matter of what we can
- 16:00debate, what we can argue against. They
- 16:03begin reasoning among themselves,
- 16:05saying, "If we say from heaven, he will
- 16:08say, then why did you not believe him?
- 16:13But shall we say from men?" They were
- 16:16afraid of the people for everyone
- 16:18considered John to have been a real
- 16:20prophet.
- 16:22You see, the very fact that they don't
- 16:25know where his authority is from, the
- 16:28very fact that they don't recognize
- 16:31who sent him to clean the temple, that
- 16:34is the evidence to him that they haven't
- 16:36come to repentance. So, as soon as they
- 16:39say, "We don't know what authority this
- 16:41is," he's like, "You [music] haven't
- 16:42come to repentance."
- 16:44Let's talk about that baptism you wanted
- 16:46all those years ago.
- 16:49They're dishonest. Answering Jesus, they
- 16:52said, "We do not know."
- 16:56Did they not know? No, they did know.
- 17:00They just didn't want to own it. And
- 17:02Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you
- 17:06by what authority I do these things."
- 17:08Notice he does not say, "I don't know
- 17:10either."
- 17:12He says, "You're just not telling me.
- 17:14You have an opinion. You either think
- 17:16it's from man or you think it's from
- 17:18God, but you're not saying it. So, I'm
- 17:20[music] not going to commit either. I'm
- 17:21not going to tell you." Because if you
- 17:23can't recognize
- 17:25that you're already walking in
- 17:27disobedience to something [music] you
- 17:29thought was from God, then there's no
- 17:32point in me telling you this is from
- 17:33God, cuz you're already in disobedience.
- 17:36You're not going to accept [music] more.
