- 0:00Mark 10:1
- 0:02Getting up, he went from there to the
- 0:04region of Judea beyond the Jordan.
- 0:07Crowds gathered around him again, and
- 0:09according [music] to his custom, he once
- 0:11more began to teach them.
- 0:14Some Pharisees came to Jesus testing him
- 0:17and began to question him whether it was
- 0:20lawful for a man to divorce his wife.
- 0:24And he answered and said to them, "What
- 0:26did Moses command you?" They said,
- 0:30"Moses permitted a man to write a
- 0:34certificate of divorce and [music] send
- 0:37her away."
- 0:39But Jesus said to them, "Because of your
- 0:41[music] hardness of heart, he wrote you
- 0:44this commandment.
- 0:46But from the beginning of creation,
- 0:49God made them male and [music] female.
- 0:53And for this reason a man shall leave
- 0:56his father and mother, and the two shall
- 0:59become one flesh. So they are no longer
- 1:02two, but one flesh.
- 1:07What therefore God has joined together,
- 1:10let no man separate.
- 1:13In the house, the disciples began
- 1:15questioning him about this again. And he
- 1:19said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife
- 1:21and marries another woman commits
- 1:23adultery against her.
- 1:25And if she herself divorces her husband
- 1:27and marries another man, she is
- 1:30committing adultery."
- 1:33Now
- 1:36the insight here is that
- 1:41Jesus is saying that Moses tolerated
- 1:44things
- 1:46before [music] his coming before the
- 1:48coming of grace and the Holy Spirit that
- 1:51God is no longer going to tolerate.
- 1:54And this is suggesting that the
- 1:56righteousness level is going to increase
- 1:59even while the rules and regulations are
- 2:02going to decrease.
- 2:05Covenant faithfulness
- 2:07is the premium priority for God, for
- 2:11Jesus. So divorce is not an option.
- 2:16And he says that the reason it's not an
- 2:18option is that from the beginning
- 2:22God did not make a man or a woman. He
- 2:25made both male [snorts] and female. And
- 2:29the suggestion is that
- 2:31one is not complete without the other.
- 2:35He says this is why a man leaves his
- 2:38father and mother and becomes one flesh
- 2:42with his wife.
- 2:44So they're two halves of an incomplete
- 2:46thing until they come together.
- 2:49So he's saying it is in God's nature, it
- 2:52is in the very way God created the world
- 2:56that marriages should be the outcome,
- 2:59the normal outcome of life.
- 3:02And if God has formed a marriage and you
- 3:06separate it,
- 3:08you are tampering with what God has
- 3:10done. what God has joined, let no man
- 3:14separate.
- 3:16You say, you don't have the power to
- 3:17change this cuz God joined it. God put
- 3:20this together.
- 3:22Now, this does not say that every human
- 3:24being is supposed to marry. Paul
- 3:27explicitly says that some have a grace
- 3:30not to marry and Paul didn't marry and
- 3:33Jesus didn't marry. So it's not saying
- 3:36that it's this universal unbroken rule,
- 3:39but once you marry,
- 3:41you have realized the pattern that God
- 3:44established at the creation of the
- 3:46world. And if you break apart that,
- 3:50you are committing a sin against what
- 3:52God has done.
- 3:54And the disciples
- 3:57ask him [clears throat] privately. They
- 3:59don't like it. Matthew expounds on the
- 4:02conversation a little bit more. And I
- 4:04already addressed that in the other
- 4:06teaching. But the disciples ask him
- 4:08privately.
- 4:10Do you really mean this? I mean, this
- 4:12sounds pretty tough because for people
- 4:15who have not come to repentance and
- 4:17denied their self-will and have not been
- 4:20filled with the grace of the Holy
- 4:22Spirit, keeping covenant is the most
- 4:25impossible thing imaginable.
- 4:28So, they're they're really perplexed by
- 4:29it. They don't like it. And he says, "If
- 4:33you do this, you're committing
- 4:35adultery."
- 4:38And they were bringing children to him
- 4:40so that he might touch them. But
- 4:42[clears throat] the disciples rebuked
- 4:43them.
- 4:45Now, I don't think it's a coincidence
- 4:47that he is ministering to them about
- 4:50keeping covenant in marriage and
- 4:52instantly children show up.
- 4:55I think it's revealing that the
- 4:58disciples do not have the view toward
- 5:00family and children that would protect
- 5:03the marriage, but Jesus does.
- 5:08And they were bringing children to him
- 5:10so that he might touch them. But the
- 5:11disciples [clears throat]
- 5:12rebuked them. And when Jesus saw this,
- 5:14he was indignant
- 5:18and said to them, "Permit the children
- 5:21to come to me and do not hinder them,
- 5:24[clears throat] for the kingdom of God
- 5:26belongs to such as these.
- 5:30Truly I say to you, whoever does not
- 5:33receive the kingdom of God like a child
- 5:36will not enter it at all."
- 5:40You just picture those children running
- 5:42without ego or self-consciousness,
- 5:46running and jumping and getting into
- 5:49Jesus's arms. And he's saying, "If you
- 5:52don't get like that in your response to
- 5:55God, you're not going to enter at all.
- 5:59You come with all your complexes, all
- 6:02your ego, your pride, your past, your
- 6:05convolutions,
- 6:07your arrogance. You can't get into what
- 6:10God's doing. You're going to have to
- 6:12become more like this.
- 6:14And he took them, the children, in his
- 6:16arms and began blessing them, laying his
- 6:20hands on them.
- 6:23They were receiving the kingdom. They
- 6:26were receiving the blessing in the arms
- 6:28of Jesus.
- 6:31As he was setting out on a journey, a
- 6:35man ran up to him, knelt before him, and
- 6:40asked,
- 6:44"Good teacher, what shall I do to
- 6:47inherit eternal life?"
- 6:49And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call
- 6:53me good?
- 6:55No one is good except God alone.
- 6:58You know the commandments.
- 7:00Do not murder.
- 7:02Do not commit adultery. Do not steal.
- 7:05Do not bear false witness. Do not
- 7:08defraud. Honor your father and mother.
- 7:13And he said to him, "Teacher, I have
- 7:16kept all these things from my youth."
- 7:20Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for
- 7:23him and said to him,
- 7:27"One thing you lack. Go and sell all you
- 7:31possess and give to the poor and you
- 7:34will have treasure in heaven and come
- 7:38and follow me."
- 7:41But at these words he was saddened and
- 7:46he went away grieving
- 7:49for he was one who owned much property.
- 7:53And Jesus looking around said to his
- 7:55disciples, "How hard it will be for
- 7:59those who are wealthy to enter the
- 8:01kingdom of God." [clears throat]
- 8:04The disciples were amazed at his words.
- 8:09But Jesus answered again and said to
- 8:11them, "Children,
- 8:14how hard it is to enter the kingdom of
- 8:17God.
- 8:19It is easier for a camel to go through
- 8:21the eye of the needle than for a rich
- 8:24man to enter the kingdom of God."
- 8:28They were even more astonished and said
- 8:31to them, "Then who can be saved?"
- 8:36looking at them. Jesus said with people
- 8:39it is impossible but not with God
- 8:42for all things are possible with God.
- 8:47So the entire theme up till now has been
- 8:49children. The way children respond, the
- 8:52way you don't cause children to stumble,
- 8:55the way children get blessed,
- 8:58the way children are
- 9:00the product of a marriage that holds
- 9:03together.
- 9:04And Jesus is setting out on a journey.
- 9:07He's in a hurry. And a guy runs up to
- 9:11him. This is not some casual meeting.
- 9:14This is somebody who's hungry. This is
- 9:17somebody who needs a change in their
- 9:19life. And he comes running up and he
- 9:22kneels down and he says, "Good teacher,
- 9:26what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
- 9:29And Jesus tells him, first he asks, "Why
- 9:32do you call me good? There's none good
- 9:33but God alone. Now, if the man had said,
- 9:37"I believe you are the son of the living
- 9:39God," that would have proved he wasn't
- 9:41just flattering Jesus. But this is a
- 9:44flattery confession.
- 9:46He doesn't think Jesus is God. He just
- 9:49thinks that he's a normal good teacher.
- 9:52So, when he says good teacher,
- 9:55Jesus doesn't like the butter. He's
- 9:57like, "Save the butter. Let's just be
- 10:00real here."
- 10:02And the man doesn't come back with any
- 10:03answer that shows he understands who
- 10:05Jesus is.
- 10:07Jesus tells him, "Do what you know to
- 10:09do.
- 10:11Do what you've already been told. Isn't
- 10:13that enough for you?" And he wants the
- 10:15man to acknowledge that that's not
- 10:17enough. He says, "Teacher, I have kept
- 10:20all these things from my youth."
- 10:24But the man does not feel that he has
- 10:26eternal life. He ran to Jesus because
- 10:30all the things he's kept from his youth
- 10:32have not filled him, have not satisfied
- 10:35him, have not given him the assurance
- 10:37that he needs.
- 10:39And that's exactly where Jesus wants
- 10:41him, acknowledging that everything he
- 10:43takes pride in already having done is
- 10:46not enough.
- 10:49So then Jesus says to him, "One thing
- 10:53you lack.
- 10:56One thing you lack, get rid of
- 10:58something.
- 11:01Well, that doesn't make sense. If I lack
- 11:04something,
- 11:06how am I going to get rid of it and gain
- 11:08it? Gain something. How does this work?
- 11:10If I lack something, how do I gain what
- 11:13I lack by getting rid of something?
- 11:15Well, only if the thing that you need to
- 11:18get rid of is taking the place of the
- 11:21thing you lack.
- 11:24So get rid
- 11:26of the idols in your life that are
- 11:29taking the place of faith in your life.
- 11:33Sell everything that you have that
- 11:35you're putting your trust in. And then
- 11:37you're going to get what you lack. And
- 11:39that is the relationship of following
- 11:41Jesus. Jesus is embarking on a journey.
- 11:45And the suggestion is that this guy
- 11:47would like to go with him.
- 11:50The suggestion is that this guy doesn't
- 11:53have a purpose in his life. This guy's
- 11:55lost. He doesn't know where he's going.
- 11:58And Jesus is saying, "You can come with
- 12:00me, and that's what you lack, but you
- 12:04can't come with me until you get rid of
- 12:05the idols that have taken my place.
- 12:09All these things that you put your trust
- 12:10in." And then Jesus begins to say how
- 12:16hard it is for those who are wealthy to
- 12:18enter the kingdom of God. And this is a
- 12:21profound insight because the disciples
- 12:23are shocked at this statement. We've
- 12:26grown up hearing the gospels our whole
- 12:28life. It's been taught and preached for
- 12:302,000 years in Western culture.
- 12:34But for them it was astounding
- 12:37to hear that riches and success could be
- 12:41a hindrance to salvation.
- 12:45They are astounded. What did he just
- 12:48say?
- 12:50Because they don't see the works of
- 12:54their hands and their property and their
- 12:58money as idols that could potentially
- 13:01take the place of God.
- 13:05He doubles down on it. He says,
- 13:08"Children."
- 13:09So they are followers. They are
- 13:11children. Even though this poor guy is
- 13:14not children, how hard it is to enter
- 13:18the kingdom of God. Now he takes it. He
- 13:20doesn't even connect it to the rich. He
- 13:22says how hard it is to enter the kingdom
- 13:25of God. If anybody ever comes to you and
- 13:27says, "Oh, it's easy to be saved. It's
- 13:31easy to be a disciple. It's easy to be
- 13:34in the kingdom. You better know that
- 13:36person's a liar because Jesus says how
- 13:40hard it is to enter the kingdom of God.
- 13:45It is easier for a camel to go through
- 13:47the eye of the needle than for a rich
- 13:50man to enter the kingdom of God.
- 13:53It's quite possible that this eye of the
- 13:55needle referred to a small door in the
- 13:58great city gates of Jerusalem when after
- 14:00the gates were closed, this tiny little
- 14:02door that was big enough only for a man
- 14:05would be opened. But sometimes if a man
- 14:07came with a camel, the camel had to go
- 14:10through that small little door in the
- 14:11gate that was called the eye of the
- 14:13needle. But in order to get through it,
- 14:15he had to remove all the baggage on his
- 14:18back and then crawl through on his
- 14:20knees. So, he's possibly saying to us
- 14:23that you've got to be like that camel.
- 14:25Get all the baggage off of your back and
- 14:27come through on your knees and you can
- 14:30enter that place like a child once more.
- 14:32Not with the great stature of your camel
- 14:35pride. And not with the great baggage of
- 14:38all the things you put your trust in,
- 14:40but on your knees, stripped of
- 14:42everything except the Lord you claim to
- 14:45trust in. Peter began to say to him,
- 14:49"Behold, we have left everything and
- 14:52followed you." Jesus said, "Truly I say
- 14:54to you, there is no one who has left
- 14:56house or brothers or sisters or mother
- 15:00or father or children or farms for my
- 15:04sake and for the gospel's sake, but that
- 15:07he will receive a hundred times as much
- 15:10now in the present age. houses and
- 15:15brothers and sisters and mothers and
- 15:18children and farms along with
- 15:20persecution
- 15:22and in the age to come eternal life.
- 15:27But many who are first will be last and
- 15:30the last will be first.
- 15:33So in this
- 15:35we can see that Jesus is naming all the
- 15:38things that might become our idol. These
- 15:42are good things. These are blessings.
- 15:44When they come after seeking first
- 15:47Christ in his kingdom, when they come as
- 15:50a blessing in seeking first Christ in
- 15:53his kingdom, they're they're a gift from
- 15:55his hand. But when they come before
- 15:58Christ in his kingdom, they are a
- 16:00blockage and an idol. What he's saying
- 16:02is God is not trying
- 16:05to ruin your life, to take away all your
- 16:07joys. That's not the point. But what
- 16:10comes first for you? What have you put
- 16:12first? Is it Christ in his kingdom or is
- 16:15it all of this stuff?
- 16:17It's powerful to think that Jesus is
- 16:20emphatically telling us that he wants us
- 16:23to have these blessings in this life, in
- 16:28this present age.
- 16:30That that's part of his kingdom promise.
- 16:34Wow. [clears throat]
- 16:36That he says many who are first will be
- 16:38last. Many who came in with lots of
- 16:41success, they were first in the world.
- 16:45They were first in wealth. They were
- 16:47first in education. They're going to be
- 16:49last. If you see a move of God, the last
- 16:54people to repent, the last people to
- 16:58find grace will be the most educated,
- 17:01the most affluent, the most successful.
- 17:04Everything their success has taught them
- 17:05in the world has moved them away from
- 17:08childlike faith toward cunning,
- 17:12distrust, manipulation,
- 17:15self-p protection, and they've got to
- 17:18become like a child. But the last, those
- 17:20who have nothing to lose, are the first
- 17:23to fall at his feet as a child and find
- 17:26what they're looking for.
- 17:28The next section is going to tell the
- 17:30journey that Jesus was setting out to
- 17:32take. The very journey that the rich
- 17:34young ruler wanted to be part of but was
- 17:38unready to participate in. And listen to
- 17:41the language carefully. They were on the
- 17:44road going up to Jerusalem and Jesus was
- 17:50walking on ahead of them.
- 17:52[clears throat]
- 17:54And they were amazed. and those who
- 17:57followed were fearful.
- 18:00So they're on a journey. There's a group
- 18:02of them and they're headed toward
- 18:04Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the symbol of
- 18:08spiritual
- 18:10rebellion, spiritual pride, threat, and
- 18:14hostility toward Jesus. And he's not
- 18:18holding back behind the crowd. He is out
- 18:21by himself, striding straight toward
- 18:24Jerusalem and trouble.
- 18:27And the people who are with him are
- 18:29amazed
- 18:30and they're scared. They're fearful.
- 18:36And he took the 12 aside and began to
- 18:39tell them what was going to happen,
- 18:42saying, "Behold,
- 18:44we are going up to Jerusalem, and
- 18:46[clears throat] the Son of Man will be
- 18:48delivered to the chief priests and the
- 18:49scribes, and they will condemn him to
- 18:52death, and will hand him over to the
- 18:54Gentiles, and they will mock him and
- 18:58spit on him and scourge him and kill
- 19:01him, and three days later, he will rise
- 19:04again."
- 19:05James and John, the two sons of Zebedee,
- 19:08came up to Jesus, saying,"Teacher, we
- 19:10want you to do for us whatever we ask of
- 19:12you."
- 19:14And he said to them, "What do you want
- 19:16me to do for you?" They said to him,
- 19:18"Grant that we may sit, one on your
- 19:20right and one on your left, in your
- 19:22glory."
- 19:25So, we are always seeing these
- 19:26juositions, especially in Matthew and
- 19:29Mark. Constantly they are showing Jesus
- 19:33facing his impending doom. And then
- 19:36immediately we see the disciples wanting
- 19:39to know who's going to be the greatest.
- 19:42And in this account, John and James are
- 19:45coming and asking him themselves. And
- 19:47apparently that that didn't end the
- 19:48argument because when he said no to
- 19:50them, their mom came and asked for them
- 19:52in Matthew's version. I mean, they were
- 19:55the first, you know, they were they were
- 19:56right there and so stick with it. What
- 19:59do they want from this? They want glory.
- 20:01That we may sit one on your right and
- 20:03one on your left in your glory.
- 20:06So, they don't see why he's going to
- 20:07Jerusalem. He sees it. And yet, he's not
- 20:12scared to go. He's moving out ahead of
- 20:14them. He's determined to get there.
- 20:20But Jesus said to them, to John and
- 20:22James, who asked to sit in his glory,
- 20:25"You do not know what you are asking.
- 20:28Are you able to drink the cup that I
- 20:30drink or to be baptized with the baptism
- 20:33with which I am baptized? They said to
- 20:36him, "We are able."
- 20:38And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I
- 20:41drink, you shall drink, and you shall be
- 20:44baptized with the baptism with which I
- 20:46am baptized. But to sit on my right or
- 20:49on my left, this is not mine to give,
- 20:53but it is for those for whom it has been
- 20:56prepared." Hearing this, the 10 began to
- 20:59feel indignant with James and John.
- 21:02Calling them to himself, Jesus said to
- 21:05them, "You know that those who are
- 21:08recognized as rulers of the Gentiles
- 21:11lord it over them,
- 21:14and their great men exercise authority
- 21:17over them." But it is not this way among
- 21:20you. But whoever wishes to become great
- 21:23among you shall be your servant.
- 21:27And whoever wishes to be the first among
- 21:29you shall be slave of all.
- 21:32For even the Son of Man did not come to
- 21:34be served, but to serve and to give his
- 21:38life a ransom for many.
- 21:45This is so disturbing and it's so
- 21:48insightful to how human beings
- 21:51don't understand what it's all about.
- 21:53Jesus is going to his death and we're
- 21:57asking what's my position.
- 22:00And this is what Mark has been talking
- 22:02about for three chapters now. It's the
- 22:05same question they were asking when he
- 22:07talked to them about becoming like a
- 22:09little child.
- 22:11And it's the same question they started
- 22:13asking right after he told them the last
- 22:15time that he was going to die.
- 22:18He's talking about dying. He's talking
- 22:21about sacrificing. And they're talking
- 22:23about position. Just like that. And he
- 22:27tells them again, if you wish to be
- 22:30greatest, if you wish to be first,
- 22:33you're going to have to become last.
- 22:36And [clears throat] he tells them that
- 22:37they're going to drink the cup.
- 22:40They're going to drink the cup of
- 22:42betrayal. They're going to drink the cup
- 22:45of sacrifice.
- 22:47This baptism that he's referring to is
- 22:51not another water baptism.
- 22:54It's the immersion into agony, the
- 22:58immersion into the passion of sacrifice
- 23:00on the cross. And he's telling them,
- 23:03you're going to have to go through this
- 23:04baptism.
- 23:06Baptism here means totally dunked,
- 23:09totally immersed,
- 23:11no part of you left out. You're going to
- 23:13go through sacrifice. You're going to go
- 23:16through pain, but you're not yet able.
- 23:20Then they came to Jericho. And as he was
- 23:22leaving Jericho with his disciples and a
- 23:24large crowd, a blind beggar named
- 23:27Bartameus, the son of Tmus, was sitting
- 23:31by the road.
- 23:33When he heard that it was Jesus the
- 23:35Nazarene, he began to cry out and say,
- 23:39"Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me."
- 23:46Many were sternly telling him to be
- 23:49quiet.
- 23:51But he kept crying out all the more,
- 23:55"Son of David,
- 23:58have mercy on me."
- 24:02Well, this is meaningful because Jesus
- 24:04is heading toward Jerusalem and the
- 24:07tension is building in the disciples.
- 24:11They know that when he enters Jerusalem,
- 24:13that's going to be the defining moment.
- 24:16And they're thinking it's when he's
- 24:18going to show himself to be the king.
- 24:21And they want to make sure they've got a
- 24:23position, one on his right and one on
- 24:25his left. For Jesus, the tension is
- 24:27building because he knows he's going to
- 24:29be delivered over, scourged, beaten,
- 24:32killed, baptized in total affliction and
- 24:35suffering.
- 24:38But Baremus
- 24:41sees it correctly. The blind man sees it
- 24:45correctly.
- 24:46He calls him son of David. And that
- 24:49phrase son of David
- 24:52would have been like saying deliverer
- 24:55because they called the Messiah who was
- 24:58to come. He was going to be the son of
- 25:01David who was going to restore David's
- 25:04kingdom.
- 25:05And the disciples are looking for the
- 25:07wrong kind of kingdom. They want a
- 25:09kingdom of position. They want a kingdom
- 25:12like the Gentiles to lord it over other
- 25:15people because it's self-centered
- 25:17kingdom seeking.
- 25:19And Jesus isn't looking for that. He
- 25:21knows what this is going to cost. But
- 25:23Barnameus sees it correctly. He wants a
- 25:26kingdom that can heal the brokenness of
- 25:29his human condition. And that is exactly
- 25:32the kingdom Jesus is bringing. So the
- 25:35fact that he says son of David at this
- 25:37moment is very meaningful. He is showing
- 25:42the crowd what the crowd does not see.
- 25:45that the son of David is a healer, that
- 25:48the son of David casts out demons by the
- 25:51spirit of God, that the son of David
- 25:54forgives sins, that the son of David has
- 25:57no interest in gentile thrones, ruling
- 26:00or dominion.
- 26:03Son of David, have mercy on me. And
- 26:07Jesus stopped
- 26:09and said, call him here.
- 26:13So they called the blind man, saying to
- 26:15him, "Take courage. Stand up. He is
- 26:19calling for you.
- 26:21God stands still when we cry out in
- 26:25humble supplication
- 26:27for his help and he calls for you and he
- 26:31commands us to come to him even though
- 26:34we were calling for him."
- 26:36Now this is important. It says,
- 26:39"Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up
- 26:44and came to Jesus."
- 26:46This guy's blind. He shouldn't be
- 26:49jumping anywhere. But when Jesus is
- 26:52calling you, you can run even if you're
- 26:55blind. But it says throwing aside his
- 26:58cloak
- 27:00in order to beg in these times you had
- 27:04to get a permit from the authorities.
- 27:08And the permit that you were given was a
- 27:10cloak that defined you as a beggar.
- 27:15If you were not considered to be sick
- 27:18enough and helpless enough, you weren't
- 27:20allowed to beg. You weren't allowed to
- 27:23stand on the corner with a cardboard
- 27:24sign with a long face and a longer
- 27:26story. You had to have a permit where
- 27:29you were classified as so needy, so
- 27:32broken that you couldn't earn a living.
- 27:34And they would give you a cloak that
- 27:37only beggars wore. And that's his
- 27:40identity. That's his survival. So when
- 27:43he jumps up and throws off his beggar's
- 27:46garment, he is saying, "I am never going
- 27:50to be this again." He's already
- 27:52convinced he's going to be healed.
- 27:55He's saying, "I'm not coming with my
- 27:58permit to beg for money. I'm coming with
- 28:01permission to get a miracle."
- 28:04And he jumps toward the miracle.
- 28:08He is the embodiment of the faith that
- 28:11Jesus wants, the faith that's going to
- 28:14release kingdom power.
- 28:17Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up
- 28:20and came to Jesus. And answering him,
- 28:23Jesus said, "What do you want me to do
- 28:27for you?"
- 28:29Every request [music] this man would
- 28:31have made since he got the permit to beg
- 28:35would have been a request [music] for
- 28:36money.
- 28:38Help me sustain my broken life.
- 28:43But Jesus wants him to confess that he's
- 28:46asking for something else. He doesn't
- 28:49he's not calling out because this guy's
- 28:51the richest man and he's some ruler and
- 28:53he's got money for me. Jesus wants him
- 28:56to confess exactly what he's asking for.
- 29:00And the blind man said to him, "Rabbi,
- 29:03I want to regain my sight."
- 29:08Maybe he had an accident. Maybe he once
- 29:11could see and he lost his sight and he
- 29:15wants to regain it. And Jesus said to
- 29:18him, "Go.
- 29:21Your faith has made you well."
- 29:25Immediately he regained his sight and
- 29:28began following him on the road.
- 29:31So now we wrap up the chapter
- 29:34with a scene of a man who's broken
- 29:37enough to be part of the journey to
- 29:40Jerusalem.
- 29:42The first man runs to Jesus. Also, the
- 29:46first man kneels at his feet, but he's
- 29:49got idols.
- 29:51He's got things that [music] he's
- 29:53putting his trust in. And so he cannot
- 29:56jump on this journey
- 29:59toward Jerusalem. But the last man is so
- 30:02bankrupt, so poor, so desperate that
- 30:06he's willing to lose his identity in a
- 30:09flash and [clears throat] never look
- 30:11back because all it is is the identity
- 30:14of a beggar. And he's willing to jump up
- 30:18and run to Jesus. And then he becomes
- 30:21part of the journey that the rich man
- 30:24missed out on.
- 30:28[music]
