- 0:03Marian Jones was once hailed as the
- 0:05fastest woman in the world she was a
- 0:07hero to Millions until she was found
- 0:09guilty of lying to investigators about
- 0:11using steroids Maran served six months
- 0:14in federal prison I spoke with her just
- 0:16weeks after her
- 0:18release what was that experience like
- 0:22for you I mean I hear prison can either
- 0:24grow you up or tear you down it was
- 0:27certainly
- 0:28lifechanging there were moments Oprah
- 0:30where I felt like um my world was over
- 0:34you know where um I wasn't with my
- 0:36family I wasn't with my kids um I'd made
- 0:40such a huge
- 0:41mistake that was four years ago and we
- 0:44wanted to find out how life is now for
- 0:46Marian so we caught up with her in her
- 0:49hometown of Austin Texas same town as
- 0:54[Music]
- 0:56Lance 5 years ago I was quite uncertain
- 0:59about how the Future Would um evolve and
- 1:04well in 2008 when I sat down with opral
- 1:07it was the first time really that I had
- 1:10opened up about my
- 1:12experiences um since everything happened
- 1:15to me and to the people
- 1:20who believe that I wasn't telling the
- 1:23truth in my interview with Oprah um my I
- 1:29would just tell tell them you know it's
- 1:31it's time to move on you're never going
- 1:34to convince everybody that you're
- 1:36telling the
- 1:37truth and if you attempt to do that it's
- 1:40going to be a long long life for you um
- 1:43you know I know in my heart that I told
- 1:46what's true and God knows and my family
- 1:49knows and I've moved
- 1:53on I knew that I wanted to get back out
- 1:56in the public and that there was going
- 1:57to be a lot of doubters and it was going
- 1:59to be a hard it was going to be a
- 2:00struggle and um I thought well okay how
- 2:03can I best help young people in
- 2:05particular who um are possibly headed
- 2:09down the wrong path and I just thought
- 2:12what do I wish I would have done when I
- 2:16saw some of these red red flags in my
- 2:18past what do I wish I would have done at
- 2:20that moment I wish I would
- 2:22have taken a break I wish I would have
- 2:25taken a step back and so that's the
- 2:27message that I share now
- 2:34I came to the conclusion that if I had
- 2:35just taken a break if I had just slowed
- 2:38down taken a step back and really assess
- 2:41the situation um I could have made a
- 2:44better choice kids know that I've I've
- 2:46lived it and I'm just trying to help
- 2:48them not make certain choices and being
- 2:51able to speak to young people and share
- 2:54my experiences it almost makes it all
- 2:56worth it
- 3:03you know I have almost become like the
- 3:06poster
- 3:07child for for poor decisions that
- 3:11athletes
- 3:12make a lot of people um
- 3:16used my downfall to for their benefit
- 3:21and I vowed that I would never
- 3:23capitalize on somebody else's hard times
- 3:26right um because I know how it feels for
- 3:31people to turn their
- 3:34backs I think my hope for
- 3:37for any athletes in public eye
- 3:43um when they have to admit
- 3:46wrongdoing is that it's first important
- 3:50[Music]
- 3:52to confront the people whom you know you
- 3:55hurt and then secondly you have to to
- 3:59begin the long long road of of forgiving
- 4:03yourself and
- 4:05although now you might not be able to
- 4:10see any good in your life um I think I'm
- 4:15a testament that if you surround
- 4:18yourself with people who love you and
- 4:20care for you that there's
- 4:22light at the end of the tunnel if I
- 4:25could say that
- 4:29[Music]
