- 0:00Please, pretty please send me one of
- 0:03your videos. I don't know how to even
- 0:06say the words. Well, what what give me a
- 0:09roundabout what you're thinking?
- 0:11That somebody in my family's dead. This
- 0:14is the story of Granamato. He became
- 0:16obsessed with a Bulgarian webcam model
- 0:18named Sylvie. His addiction spiraled out
- 0:21of control and he ended up stealing
- 0:23large amounts of money from his own
- 0:24family just to keep chatting with her.
- 0:26His family noticed something was wrong
- 0:28and tried to help. Eventually, they gave
- 0:31him a choice. Stop talking to Sylvie or
- 0:34move out. Grant didn't take it well. He
- 0:36was forced to leave the house and the
- 0:38very next day, his brother didn't show
- 0:40up for work. Concerned police went to
- 0:42the house and what they found was
- 0:45horrifying. All three of Grant's family
- 0:47members had been murdered. Grant claimed
- 0:50he had nothing to do with it, but
- 0:51investigators didn't buy it. He was
- 0:53found guilty and sentenced to life in
- 0:55prison. It's a chilling reminder of how
- 0:58dangerous unchecked obsession and
- 1:00addiction can become. Now, let's jump
- 1:02into Grant's police interrogation. It
- 1:05started off like most do, calm and by
- 1:07the book. The detectives asked him to
- 1:10state his name and share some basic
- 1:11information. Nothing unusual. They asked
- 1:14about his education, and Grant told them
- 1:16he had a bachelor's degree in nursing.
- 1:18He also mentioned that he had a job
- 1:20interview the day before, which caught
- 1:22the detective's interest. They pressed
- 1:24for more details.
- 1:27So, you got to walk through Coke or
- 1:28anything? No, no, no, no. I'll hold off
- 1:30on that. Okay. Hi, I'm Eva. Hi. How are
- 1:32you?
- 1:34I'm here. Hey, we really appreciate you
- 1:37coming up here with us and uh at any
- 1:40time during this you need to stop and go
- 1:41to the bathroom, want a drink, um
- 1:44snacks, just let me know and we we'll be
- 1:47happy to get to it. Um my name is Danny
- 1:49Anderson and uh I'm a deputy county
- 1:52Sheriff's Office as is Eva. Um, so we
- 1:55just want to talk to you a little bit
- 1:56and we'll get this in and out. Be on our
- 1:58way. Okay. Um, full name. My, uh, full
- 2:03name is Grant Tieran Amato. How do you
- 2:05spell Tan? T I E R N A N. I like that.
- 2:11Your birth? Um, May 20th, 1989. Okay.
- 2:16Um, home address. Home address is 2112
- 2:19Sultan
- 2:20Circle, Trulio, Florida.
- 2:2532766.
- 2:28Um, phone number uh for the home or for
- 2:32home. Well, I mean my original cell
- 2:34phone number was
- 2:394076870738. Uh, home phone number was
- 2:454079711422. Uh, my cell phone currently
- 2:47doesn't have any service with it. So, I
- 2:49mean, it's just So, you don't have you
- 2:52haven't moved to another just that one's
- 2:54no longer good. My dad had told me that
- 2:56he that when he disconnected my service
- 2:57that he also changed my phone number.
- 2:59So, I don't know what the new phone
- 3:00number is, but uh I mean it's probably
- 3:03like you can probably still see it. Do
- 3:04you have the phone or it it was in my
- 3:06duffel bag. Oh, there gotcha.
- 3:10Um email. You have an email if we need
- 3:12to. My main email is Giamato all one
- 3:16word all all lowercase. uh Giamato light
- 3:19like a light bulbgmail.com
- 3:26education I have a bachelor's of science
- 3:28in nursing from UCF back in
- 3:332011 uh and that's my highest level okay
- 3:36what what is there any special uh
- 3:38nursing degree what you do or uh I mean
- 3:41I have like other certifications
- 3:43um but uh I mean with that like I
- 3:46primarily worked in the hospital
- 3:48for I think 5 years, five or six years
- 3:52and then I was pursuing a master's of
- 3:54science in nurse anesthesia. Um that was
- 3:57back in 2015 I believe. Okay. Um, but
- 4:01then I didn't complete that and then I
- 4:02just went back to nursing. And then when
- 4:04this
- 4:05whole like wrongful accusation of the
- 4:08grand theft charge that I told you about
- 4:09in the car when that happened, uh, I
- 4:12stopped working at the hospital and then
- 4:14that took like I don't think we I don't
- 4:16think we talked about that in the car.
- 4:17Oh. Oh. Well, I had I was accused of
- 4:19grand theft of the third degree back
- 4:22in June of 2018. Um that like went on
- 4:28for 6 months and during that time I
- 4:30obviously wasn't allowed to work because
- 4:31of it. Um and then where was that at?
- 4:35Florida Hospital South, the main one
- 4:37down in Orlando. General Orange Avenue.
- 4:39Uh
- 4:41Rollins, that's where it is. Rollins.
- 4:43Okay. Um so when that happened,
- 4:46obviously I was dismissed from that job
- 4:48and then I couldn't get another job
- 4:49because now you have an outstanding
- 4:51felony charge on your name. Sure. Um so
- 4:53then I got the attorney. It it all went
- 4:55through and then finally in December
- 4:57they posted on the Orange County clerk
- 5:00courts or whatever website where your
- 5:02where your file is that there was no
- 5:04evidence ever ever presented. All the
- 5:06charges were dropped and now I'm just in
- 5:08the process of expuning that from my
- 5:09records. But
- 5:12um because you know I can't keep just
- 5:15not working forever. Uh and you know
- 5:17that was that was kind of a a topic
- 5:20around the house was you know I need to
- 5:22get started here right? Um, who was your
- 5:24attorney for for that? Uh, Lauren Lyham,
- 5:26Chapman, Chapman Law Group. Okay.
- 5:28They're I think that one's based in
- 5:30Sarasota. Okay.
- 5:33Um, so then, but they didn't really have
- 5:35to do anything. State attorney file any
- 5:37charges. So, state attorney didn't file
- 5:39anything and then she just presented
- 5:41that she was going to be my attorney and
- 5:42that was the most work she ever had to
- 5:44do. Okay.
- 5:46Um, and then I'd been applying for jobs
- 5:50for the last couple weeks. I'd gotten a
- 5:52like three or four call backs. Um, and
- 5:55then I went on a job interview yesterday
- 5:56for a home infusion nurse job. Where
- 5:59where was that at? Um, that was with uh
- 6:05God a Creta a credto.
- 6:09Is that like a staffing or is that a
- 6:12like a like a head hunter kind of job?
- 6:14No, no, no. That's uh that's like their
- 6:16actual company. It's uh God, why can I
- 6:18not remember the first name? It's
- 6:19something scripts team scripts.
- 6:25Where's the location? Uh, it's out close
- 6:28to the airport. It's on Lee Vista.
- 6:32What time was your interview yesterday?
- 6:34Uh, it was scheduled for 10:00. I got
- 6:36there around 9.
- 6:38Uh, and then I think we actually had the
- 6:40interview at about 9:45. How'd that go?
- 6:42I mean, it was all good. Uh, they didn't
- 6:44have anything. They said that they'd
- 6:45probably be getting back to me by
- 6:46Tuesday or Thursday this coming week.
- 6:48get you back to work. Yeah. Yeah. Cuz I
- 6:51mean it's like it's crappy world when
- 6:54you know you don't have any money, you
- 6:55can't do anything. So financially, how
- 6:58how's the the nursing what you did? I'm
- 7:00sorry I just don't know that much. She
- 7:01knows all about nursing. The nursing how
- 7:03how does it pay? How does it pay? Um I
- 7:05mean if you work your your standard 3 31
- 7:0712 hours a week, you get anywhere
- 7:09between I'd say 45 and $55,000 a year.
- 7:12So I mean it's not bad. Um, obviously if
- 7:15you work overtime like some of the
- 7:17nurses who have also been nurses for a
- 7:18long time. Uh, I mean they can make six
- 7:21figures if if you work five years. What
- 7:23was your best What was your best year? I
- 7:25think my best year I made like 55,000.
- 7:2755 cuz I rarely worked overtime, right?
- 7:29You know, and I was just cuz I I had the
- 7:31whole plan of going to uh to graduate
- 7:33school. So I was just kind of using it
- 7:35as a stepping stone for that time. Just
- 7:36to pay the bills to get you where you
- 7:37gota and that and what you're going for,
- 7:41what does that pay? Nurse anesthesia
- 7:43pays I mean base like about 150 up to
- 7:47175. You work a lot of overtime. You can
- 7:49cusp 200 but then you know. So what
- 7:51would you actually be doing if I could
- 7:54do anything? No I mean with that job
- 7:55that an nursing right what would you Oh
- 7:59yeah nursing test. Thank you. Uh you
- 8:01just be you're the you're in the O. You
- 8:04put the patients to sleep keep them
- 8:05alive during surgery. Wake them up. Send
- 8:07them off to I thought that was a doctor
- 8:09that did that in Florida. Yeah. In
- 8:11Florida, the anesthesiologist, which is
- 8:13the MD equivalent, if you will, they
- 8:16have to come in at the start of surgery,
- 8:18they have to induce the patient to put
- 8:20them to sleep. And then as long as
- 8:21they're comfortable with you, the
- 8:22surgeon's comfortable with you, then the
- 8:24anesthesiologist leaves and then you
- 8:26take care of the whole entire surgical,
- 8:28right? Okay. And then again, you know,
- 8:31by the time you're a CRNA, you're
- 8:33obviously confident enough to wake the
- 8:35patient up. So when I was a student
- 8:37though, the anesthesiologist would
- 8:38sometimes come back in for wake up to
- 8:40make sure everything's okay and then you
- 8:42take them to the uh pack or the posttop
- 8:44area, drop them off, you give the nurse
- 8:47report and then you go on to your next
- 8:48case. Okay.
- 8:50Um high school, where'd you go? I went
- 8:53to Timber Creek High School on Avalon.
- 8:56Okay. And graduated what year? Uh 2007.
- 9:00Okay. And then did you go right to UCF
- 9:02and start your degree? Summer. Summer.
- 9:04Yeah. spoken.
- 9:06This interview took place just one day
- 9:08after the murders. At first, the
- 9:10detectives asked Grant casual, harmless
- 9:12questions. Things like his daily life,
- 9:15past relationships, and hobbies. The
- 9:17goal was to make him feel comfortable so
- 9:19they could later surprise him with the
- 9:21tough questions. Grant opened up easily.
- 9:24He talked about watching anime and
- 9:26playing video games with his brother. He
- 9:28spoke fondly of him, which made it hard
- 9:30to believe he could be responsible for
- 9:32his death. As the conversation went on,
- 9:35it became clear that Grant was really
- 9:37into computers and gaming. He talked
- 9:40about trying to build a career on Twitch
- 9:42and eventually brought up the trouble
- 9:43he'd gotten into for stealing. Then the
- 9:46topic shifted and things took a darker
- 9:48turn. Grant began talking about his
- 9:51online girlfriend, the woman he had
- 9:53become dangerously obsessed with.
- 9:56Uh, just like all the videos, you have
- 9:58to tell us. a cam model. It's like they
- 10:01they it's like a virtual girlfriend, I
- 10:04guess you could say. Okay. Like that
- 10:05type of situation. Mhm. So, a lot of the
- 10:08money went to her. Okay. Where's she at?
- 10:10She lives in Bulgaria. Where? Bulgaria.
- 10:13Where's that? Over in Europe. It's like
- 10:16outside of Germany. Something like that.
- 10:17You ever been there? No. Okay. Um it
- 10:20wasn't it wasn't that serious. What
- 10:21would you give her money for? Um just
- 10:23for like the time online with her. Yeah.
- 10:26So, it was just like that type of thing.
- 10:28And what does she charge by the minute?
- 10:30By the hour? Minutes. Okay. And how much
- 10:32is it per minute? Oh god. I think it was
- 10:34like
- 10:36it was like 90 tokens a minute. And it's
- 10:40like the conversion rate for all of that
- 10:43is like like $600 for like a like 5,000
- 10:50or something tokens or something like
- 10:51that. So, and then it was 4 hours a
- 10:54night.
- 10:55Um, so I mean it's I mean that's
- 10:57basically just where all like the cost
- 10:58went to was you pay real money for the
- 11:00tokens then you use the company's
- 11:02digital currency for that. So you do and
- 11:05when did you meet her? I met her
- 11:08[Music]
- 11:11um at the beginning of July. Yeah. At
- 11:15the very beginning of July. Okay. And
- 11:18and still talking to her? Still. Yeah. I
- 11:21mean, more just on uh like Twitter, like
- 11:23just through direct messaging. Um,
- 11:25again, cell phone service doesn't work,
- 11:27so it's like I can't use the the
- 11:29chatting like that. How much do you
- 11:30think you spent on this? Cuz it seems
- 11:32kind of pricey. Yeah. 90 tokens and and
- 11:36$5,000 for for how many tokens?
- 11:40No, no, it's $600 for for 5,000. For
- 11:435,000. Okay. So, how much do you think
- 11:45you spent um on this?
- 11:48probably close
- 11:52to like
- 11:54$200,000, I'd say. $200,000? Yeah. And
- 11:59where did the money come from? Money
- 12:00came from me, uh, my brother, and then
- 12:04my dad.
- 12:05Did they know where the money was going
- 12:07to? They didn't know that it was going
- 12:09to, uh, a cam, a cam model. I was saying
- 12:12that it was going towards my Twitch
- 12:15streaming uh like
- 12:18stuff. Yeah. Like advertising, like
- 12:19putting my name out there and that that
- 12:21type of thing. But based on what you're
- 12:23telling me, only so many people make so
- 12:25much money just I think just a few make
- 12:28a bunch of money. So that that was like
- 12:30that the ultimate goal is to get to
- 12:31that. I was hoping that that the stars
- 12:33would align and then I would be like one
- 12:35of those people because I was good at
- 12:36the games and I you know I'm a like a
- 12:39funny pleasant person on the camera and
- 12:41that type of thing. So um yeah I mean
- 12:45that's so I guess to like bring it all
- 12:47back with why I was brought to
- 12:49Cornerstone. Uh it was a mix of all of
- 12:53those things. It's like he felt
- 12:55like you know I
- 12:58um he felt like you needed to be
- 13:00grounded. Yeah. Yeah. And so then I was
- 13:04there, you know, I spoke to like the
- 13:06therapist and psychiatrist and all that
- 13:07stuff. I didn't need any medications for
- 13:09anything. They had analyzed it as this
- 13:13is an isolated event. You've been out of
- 13:14work. You have this PTSD from the whole
- 13:18getting arrested thing. And I mean, the
- 13:20last thing on my record was, I think, a
- 13:22speeding ticket back when I was at UCF.
- 13:24And then, you know, just having all of
- 13:26that stuff going on.
- 13:30Um, but then I didn't they had signed me
- 13:33they they had signed me up I think to be
- 13:35there for 60 days but then I was only
- 13:37there until January 4th. So who paid for
- 13:40that? My brother Cody. What was the cost
- 13:41of that? You know 15,000. It was
- 13:44$15,000 and then I think uh when I had
- 13:48gotten back, we were going through the
- 13:49process of calling them and seeing if we
- 13:50could get any type of refund. And I
- 13:52think they said that he was going to get
- 13:54refunded $3,000 from his 15. Sure. Um
- 13:57but I don't there so long. Right. Right.
- 13:59But I don't know if that transaction had
- 14:01ever gone through yet. So their final
- 14:03diagnosis of you was what? That I was
- 14:05fine. That didn't need to be there.
- 14:07Yeah. That I was I was fine. I told them
- 14:09all about like my living situation and
- 14:11how it had been stressful and then it
- 14:13got better and then now it's just
- 14:14stressful again. But they had all just
- 14:17said that it was just this isolated
- 14:18event situational PTSD from Right. Yeah.
- 14:20Yeah, like once once you can get this
- 14:22legal thing taken care of, which I I
- 14:25don't know if I mentioned, but when we
- 14:27looked online and we saw that all the
- 14:28charges have been dropped, that was on
- 14:30like November 30th or 31st, the day
- 14:32before we were going to Japan. So, while
- 14:35that was good and everything, um I still
- 14:38knew that it was still going to be like
- 14:40on your record until you get it expuned.
- 14:42So, you know, I was still thinking,
- 14:44okay, at least now I can maybe start
- 14:46applying when we get back from Japan.
- 14:49Um, but you
- 14:52know, yeah. So, I mean, after you get
- 14:55back, you got back on the 15th of
- 14:58December of December.
- 15:02Got
- 15:02back. I thought you said you went on the
- 15:0522nd of December. Yeah, that's when
- 15:07that's when I went to Yeah, it was after
- 15:08Japan. And it was because when I had
- 15:11gotten back, my um my mom and dad were,
- 15:15you know, dealing with a lot of the
- 15:17financial stuff while we were up there.
- 15:18Mhm. And then um when I got back, that's
- 15:22where my dad started to get really kind
- 15:24of overbearing. And I mean, rightfully
- 15:26so. I know what I did, but it's like
- 15:28with him, it was every single day, hours
- 15:30a day, excuse me, hours a day. He'd come
- 15:33home from work and then he would just
- 15:36talk to me just about the same exact
- 15:38thing over and over and over and over
- 15:39and over again. And did he get did he
- 15:41get heated? He would get heated, but he
- 15:43How about you? Did you get heated? No. I
- 15:45mean, I was, you know, I I was always
- 15:47the person in the family where like my
- 15:49brother Cody would interrupt my dad when
- 15:51he was talking. Uh my mom would
- 15:53interject and say, "You can't be saying
- 15:55that," or whatever. But for me, I would
- 15:57just sit there and I would just let my
- 15:58dad talk so that he could say everything
- 15:59that he wanted to say. Um and then if I
- 16:02saw that it was something that he wanted
- 16:03me to respond to, then I'd respond. But
- 16:05I would never be heeded to him. Sure.
- 16:07Especially if I felt like I was in the
- 16:08wrong, right? Um do you think you were
- 16:11in the wrong? I mean, yeah. To some
- 16:13extent. To some extent. you know, uh,
- 16:15spending that amount of money, it's
- 16:16idiotic to do that, you know, especially
- 16:18when you're not making 200,000. At this
- 16:21point, Amato begins to explain how he
- 16:23met Sylvie, the woman who would
- 16:25ultimately ruin his life. She was a cam
- 16:28model on a website and spending time
- 16:29with her didn't come cheap. Amato
- 16:32quickly became hooked. He ended up
- 16:34spending nearly $200,000 of his family's
- 16:36money just to keep talking to her. He
- 16:39never told them the truth. Instead, he
- 16:41lied and said the money was going toward
- 16:44his streaming career. During the
- 16:46interview, he admitted to the police
- 16:47that he had spent a huge amount on
- 16:49Sylvie. But the strange thing was how
- 16:51casually he talked about it as if he
- 16:54didn't see anything wrong with what he
- 16:55had done. He had conversation. Uh it
- 16:57would
- 16:58be Thursday, Thursday. Uh
- 17:02because one of his rules was that I
- 17:05wasn't allowed to talk to the woman
- 17:06anymore that I had been talking to. Um,
- 17:10but I guess you could say behind the
- 17:12scenes, my mom would let me talk to her
- 17:15through her cell phone using Twitter.
- 17:18Um, and you know, she would tell me
- 17:21like, "Look, you got to keep it, you
- 17:24have to keep it just basic because if
- 17:26you say anything or if you entice
- 17:28anything or do anything like that, it
- 17:30might lead her
- 17:33to say something to like my dad or
- 17:35something like that." Because how would
- 17:36she get in touch with him? Because
- 17:38apparently when I was in Cornerstone, my
- 17:40dad told her because because he had like
- 17:44hacked my computer or something like
- 17:45that and then he found everything
- 17:47electronics guy like you and your
- 17:48brother except he's more of that like
- 17:50hacking level like able to do all that
- 17:52stuff. So he had found you know um like
- 17:56just the stuff that was related to her
- 17:59and
- 18:00then you know he like he like erased my
- 18:03whole entire computer. He put a password
- 18:05on it. So, it's like even when I came
- 18:06back up until Thursday, like I wasn't
- 18:08able to go onto my own computer to look
- 18:10at anything. I basically he was treating
- 18:12you like a small child, right? And
- 18:14rightfully so. I mean, spending that
- 18:16amount of I was acting childish. I I can
- 18:18kind of get it. But, um, so yeah,
- 18:21anyways, on Thursday, he had apparently
- 18:24found out that I was speaking to her
- 18:26again. And when I came back on the 4th,
- 18:31me, my mom picked me up from the
- 18:33Cornerstone place. And then me and my
- 18:35mom met my dad at California Pizza Grill
- 18:38or Kitchen in Waterford Lakes. And he
- 18:41had this list front and back on a piece
- 18:43of paper of all the rules. This is
- 18:46what's going to happen. This is why I'm
- 18:48acting the way that I'm going to act.
- 18:49I'm not going to be dad anymore. I'm
- 18:50going to be Chad. And I basically told
- 18:54him that I'm going to be I'm going to be
- 18:58present. I'm going to do what I can. I'm
- 19:00going to start to try and get jobs. Now,
- 19:01I told him what my plan was.
- 19:03Um, you know, it wasn't really my
- 19:06intention to get This shows just how far
- 19:08Gran's family went to stop him from
- 19:10talking to the Bulgarian woman. They
- 19:12took serious steps to block his access.
- 19:14Almost like they were dealing with a
- 19:16child, not a grown man. What's shocking
- 19:18is that Grant still didn't see anything
- 19:20wrong with what he was doing. Even after
- 19:23his father told him to stop, Grant kept
- 19:25talking to her in secret. He went behind
- 19:27his family's back and did it anyway. was
- 19:31um you know it wasn't really my
- 19:34intention to continue talking to this
- 19:35woman but it just kind of happened. Um
- 19:39and then because there was like that
- 19:41emotional connection I guess you could
- 19:42say uh between her and me like I I like
- 19:46you know it felt like like like a
- 19:47relationship you know I didn't want to
- 19:48just stop cold turkey on it.
- 19:51Um, so he had apparently found out and
- 19:55then one happy, right? And one of the
- 19:57stipulations was that he told at the
- 19:59dinner was if you speak to this woman
- 20:02again, you're out of the house. I'm
- 20:04kicking you out. You can pack up your
- 20:06[ __ ] and then you're off my property.
- 20:08Mhm. And then because of the way that he
- 20:11used to be, he had told me
- 20:14that basically if that happens that if I
- 20:17ever step back onto his property that he
- 20:19would kill me. So, you know, on
- 20:23Thursday,
- 20:25um um that all happened and then I was
- 20:29in the process. I was getting all my
- 20:30stuff together. I was peacemealing it
- 20:32out to the car and then uh you know I
- 20:36had interview on Friday so I I had to
- 20:39get my suit out to my car. I was trying
- 20:41to just get all of my necessities as
- 20:43best as I could from, you know, a
- 20:45lifetime of living inside the house. And
- 20:47then
- 20:49um
- 20:51um my brother was working that night and
- 20:54I think he was working like one of his
- 20:56long nights but he ended up getting off
- 20:57early and then I had met with my brother
- 21:01before he came home just like in the
- 21:03neighborhood area and then where it was
- 21:06just on the uh like the back side of the
- 21:09house like along I don't remember what
- 21:10that road's called but it's like you
- 21:12take the bend where it has those two
- 21:14blinking lights and then it's just down
- 21:16that road
- 21:17Not for Christmas.
- 21:19Is it for Christmas when you still turn
- 21:21the corner? I think so. I'm not I think
- 21:24so. Well, it was Yeah, it was just it
- 21:26was just down that road. Okay. Um and
- 21:30then I basically brought him up to speed
- 21:32and he had told me that he was going to
- 21:34do whatever. What time was anything?
- 21:37Uh God, what time was that? What What
- 21:40time do you go to Let me back up a
- 21:41second. I apologize. You, mom, and dad
- 21:44go to California Pizza Kitchen in
- 21:46Waterford at what time? Oh, that was all
- 21:48the way back on January 4th.
- 21:51Oh, you said Thursday. Oh, that wasn't
- 21:52Thursday. No, no, no. That was that was
- 21:55when I had come back from Cornerstone
- 21:56and he was giving me the the rules.
- 21:58Okay. Okay. Yeah. So, due Thursday then.
- 22:01That Well, what happened with that? That
- 22:02Thursday you meet with Cody down the
- 22:04street. This is this past Thursday. Yes.
- 22:06Okay. Tell me tell me about that. after
- 22:07you and your dad argue. After me and my
- 22:09dad had argued and he had told me, you
- 22:12know, this is how it's going to be and
- 22:14you know, all that stuff. Okay. Um, this
- 22:16is at the house this past Thursday. Yes.
- 22:19Yeah. Okay. Cuz this is what now?
- 22:20Saturday. So, yeah. Past Thursday, I
- 22:23guess you could say. Yeah. Um,
- 22:26so then, yeah, I spoke with Cody. He
- 22:29told me about all that. He had given me
- 22:32his debit so that because I mean, I
- 22:34don't have any money and I don't know
- 22:35where to go. Mhm. You know, I'd never
- 22:37been out of the house on my own. Um, and
- 22:39then the last thing that I was told was
- 22:41just that, you know, basically once
- 22:42again that he'll take care of it because
- 22:44this is Cody. This is Cody. What time
- 22:46What time is this approximately?
- 22:48I'd say a little
- 22:51after 10 10:30ish at night. Thursday
- 22:55night. Thursday night. Okay.
- 22:58Um and
- 23:00then yeah, so then after that I just
- 23:04like
- 23:05[Music]
- 23:06stayed in that air in the vicinity area
- 23:10for a number of hours and then I had
- 23:13remembered over some of the nights when
- 23:14I would work overnight and then I'd be
- 23:16able to come like get off early that I
- 23:18could that the Publix on 50 on Colonial,
- 23:22the one that's by the Tractor Supply
- 23:24419. Yeah. Yeah. Mhm. that that Publix
- 23:27it's like their guest Wi-Fi is always
- 23:29still active even when the store closes
- 23:31down. So I was like, "Okay, well I'm
- 23:32going to go there cuz I have my
- 23:33Surface." Um, and I can, you know, check
- 23:35on my emails. I had to pull up the
- 23:38address to my interview because I don't
- 23:40have GPS. Um, so then I would like write
- 23:42all that stuff down and then,
- 23:45um, I was basically just waiting in that
- 23:48parking lot until I had to leave to go
- 23:51to the interview.
- 23:53Um, and then I mean that was the LA
- 23:55because again it's like no cell phone
- 23:57service. Uh, I mean email was literally
- 24:01like my only form of communication. And
- 24:04then you know Yeah. I just I didn't have
- 24:07any I didn't you know I was I went to
- 24:10the the Double Tree cuz I was like I
- 24:12can't just stay in my car again all
- 24:13night. Right. And how did you pay for
- 24:15that? I paid for it with my with my
- 24:17debit card. With your debit card? Yeah.
- 24:19cuz I think there was like the 400 or
- 24:21300 and something dollars still left on
- 24:22it. Okay. Um, when did you get there?
- 24:25The double tree.
- 24:29I think I got there
- 24:33around 3 or 4 p.m. Friday. Friday.
- 24:38And then Yeah. And then I was just I
- 24:40mean I would like go out to my car so I
- 24:41get like a bottle of water or something
- 24:43like that or if I forgotten something,
- 24:44you know, just like necessity wise. Um,
- 24:47and then I was just there the whole
- 24:48night. Talk to Cody, talk to mom, talk
- 24:51to dad. No, I I couldn't talk to anybody
- 24:53cuz I didn't have But you had the phone
- 24:55in the room. Oh, yeah. I did have the
- 24:56phone in the room. But anybody? No. I
- 25:00just I didn't even honestly think about
- 25:02it cuz I was I was
- 25:04like, you know, away from a place where
- 25:08I lived for 25 years or something like
- 25:10that. I had never, you know, as
- 25:11embarrassing as it is, I'd never been on
- 25:13my own. Right. Right. The longest period
- 25:15I ever been away from anybody is 2 weeks
- 25:16when we were up in Japan.
- 25:19So, I mean, yeah, but you had your
- 25:21brother with you, so Right. Right. You
- 25:23had family with you. But yeah, I mean,
- 25:26so I guess I was waiting to see what
- 25:29would happen with this job cuz I was
- 25:31told I'd either be told Tuesday or
- 25:33Thursday. And then maybe I would try an
- 25:37outreach or something like that. or the
- 25:38last time um you know when it was like
- 25:42an issue where I didn't have my phone
- 25:43like my brother would email me so I was
- 25:46just thinking okay well I mean if
- 25:47anything he knows the situation he'll
- 25:49just email me so I checked my email a
- 25:51few times last night and then I just
- 25:53inevitably was able to to go to sleep um
- 25:57was it Thursday night that your dad told
- 25:59you that if you talked to the girl that
- 26:01he would kick you out or was that the
- 26:02conversation on the 4th at California
- 26:04that was on that was yeah on the 4th and
- 26:06then he just went through with it on
- 26:09Thursday. Okay. So, so Thursday, you're
- 26:12home all day? Yes. With your mom. She
- 26:14works at home, correct? Yes. Your dad's
- 26:16at work. What's his normal work hours?
- 26:18Uh, he works
- 26:20until I think he had to go in early that
- 26:22day. Uh, cuz he had to start like doing
- 26:24overtime or something like that. And he
- 26:27normally works though from like 5 or
- 26:296:00 in the morning to I think he gets
- 26:32home between like 5:30 and 6:00 at night
- 26:34or something like that. What time do you
- 26:35get home that day? Uh, he got home at
- 26:38like 5:30. 5:30. 5:30. 5:45. One of
- 26:41those two. Okay. Um,
- 26:45comes in. Were you there when he came
- 26:47in? Yes. Okay.
- 26:49Describe your dad normal come in. Uh,
- 26:51when my dad normally comes in, he'll
- 26:53come in. He'll look into the uh the
- 26:56living room, which is like there's the
- 26:58kitchen and then there's the living room
- 26:59where it's got like the long couch and
- 27:02whatnot that's inside. And then there's
- 27:04the TV right there. Okay. So, he'll
- 27:06normally come in through there and then
- 27:08he'll talk or he'll ask his questions or
- 27:11he'll Where were you? Where were you at
- 27:12when he came in? I was just in there. I
- 27:14was just watching uh in the virtual
- 27:15reality where where you said you had
- 27:17that set up, right? Right. Yeah. I was
- 27:18just watching And that's in what room?
- 27:20The living room. The living room. Yeah.
- 27:21I was just watching YouTube at that
- 27:23time. Just like did I talk to you? Yeah.
- 27:26Okay. Uh, and that's where
- 27:29uh cuz he had I don't know how he found
- 27:33out, but he had apparently found out and
- 27:35then found out why that I was talking to
- 27:38you to the woman. Yeah. And then uh he
- 27:41came in and then he asked me in a calmer
- 27:44state, I guess you could say. Like
- 27:48basically the the leading question of,
- 27:50you know, why do you think we're about
- 27:53to have this conversation? giving me, I
- 27:56guess, that opportunity to be honest and
- 27:58truthful, to maybe tone it down a little
- 28:00bit. I of course did what I always did
- 28:03where I kind of didn't admit to it. Um,
- 28:08and then he he came out and he told me
- 28:10that I'd been doing that. He had proof.
- 28:12Yeah. Um, have an argument. Yeah. And
- 28:15then, you know, he
- 28:18got
- 28:20just he had kind of reverted back to the
- 28:23way that he was when we were younger
- 28:24where, you know, he kind of, you know,
- 28:27pulled me up from the couch and then he
- 28:29was yelling at me to pack my [ __ ] up and
- 28:31just get out of the house that he was
- 28:32the one who had to be the hammer and
- 28:35that, you know, why am I making him have
- 28:37to go through this and all this other
- 28:39kind of stuff. Okay.
- 28:40So, you know, basically I had um he's
- 28:43becoming violent.
- 28:45Like the way you described when you were
- 28:47you when you and Cody were kids, right?
- 28:49What do you do? Um like I said, he
- 28:51pulled me up from the couch just by like
- 28:54the shirt that I was wearing. And then,
- 28:56you know, after that, he was basically
- 28:58just having that yelling where it was
- 29:00kind of kind of like cracking, you know,
- 29:02like his voice would either crack or he
- 29:05would just he was basically just yelling
- 29:06at that point and monitoring your mom.
- 29:09My mom was in her office. Okay.
- 29:12Because And I'm sorry to cut you off.
- 29:15Does mom have like an office hours? Like
- 29:17she would get up and do her work all day
- 29:19and a certain time I'm done doing my
- 29:21office work and I'm doing my family
- 29:22stuff. Not really. Okay. You work there
- 29:24all the time, right? She would I think
- 29:26the the major thing that she would do is
- 29:28she would like cook dinner. Okay. And
- 29:30then after that um she would go back
- 29:32into her office. What time was dinner
- 29:34usually? Generally between
- 29:36like 7 like I guess usually around 7:00
- 29:397:00 7:30 is when we'd usually have
- 29:41dinner most nights. Did you guys already
- 29:43have dinner at night? No. No. I think
- 29:45what was she going to make? I think she
- 29:47was going to make something with like
- 29:48chicken or something like that. stir fry
- 29:50or something like that because Cody was
- 29:52working late so she didn't want to make
- 29:53something where cuz my dad would always
- 29:55buy meals that were for four. So he we
- 29:58didn't want to pull out anything where
- 29:59there would be leftovers or something
- 30:00like that. So but she hadn't uh started
- 30:03making it yet. I think she was
- 30:04defrosting the chicken. That was about
- 30:06what time?
- 30:10Uh what
- 30:11time? I think she took those out like at
- 30:144 or something like that in the
- 30:16afternoon. And at this time the the
- 30:18argument with dad is at what time? The
- 30:20argument with dad is
- 30:21like 6 6:30 or so. 6:30. Yeah. Okay.
- 30:27Um you have your argument. You pack your
- 30:30stuff. I have my argument and then I'm
- 30:32packing my stuff. I'm, you know, taking
- 30:33it out to the car. It took me like a
- 30:35couple hours to get as much as I could.
- 30:37Just kind of out into there. Um, and
- 30:40then yeah, it's like mom's kind of just
- 30:43staying out of it to a certain degree
- 30:46because she knows like how dad can be.
- 30:49And then uh yeah, I
- 30:53mean, you know, I was and that's just
- 30:55pretty much where I was just kind of
- 30:56like waiting. So you wait outside. Did
- 30:59anybody call Cody and tell him what's
- 31:00going on? No, not I mean, not that I
- 31:02know of. Okay. And how did you know to
- 31:04meet Cody down the street? It's because
- 31:06u my mom had actually come and told me
- 31:10that you know she again she was trying
- 31:12to bridge the gap and then before I
- 31:15actually physically left I had told my
- 31:18mom that you know I'm going to be close
- 31:21I'm going to be local I'm just going to
- 31:22be like down those were tough words for
- 31:23a father to say to his son but maybe
- 31:26that was the only way he could get
- 31:27through to him no matter what the family
- 31:29did it didn't work Grant kept breaking
- 31:32the rules and things at home kept
- 31:34getting worse.
- 31:35Eventually, they had no choice but to
- 31:37kick him out of the house. Later, Grant
- 31:40talked about meeting his brother after
- 31:42he had moved out. But this is where his
- 31:44story starts to fall apart and where the
- 31:47detectives begin to catch him in his
- 31:48lies.
- 31:52[Music]
- 31:53Sorry, I need the bathroom. And I wanted
- 31:56to point out a picture of Fort Christmas
- 31:58cuz we're not aware I I'm not familiar
- 32:00with the area. that. So, we're going to
- 32:02go back and talk again about this cuz
- 32:04it's kind of important to me about
- 32:06Cody and you meeting that night, right?
- 32:09So, then that that night, which was
- 32:11Thursday, Thursday night, you meet Cody.
- 32:15Um because And did he ever tell you why
- 32:18he left work early? No. No. I mean, he
- 32:20was I I'd assume that it was just
- 32:22because he had been allowed to leave
- 32:23early. You've been allowed to leave
- 32:24early. Okay.
- 32:26So, here's I think this is the blinking
- 32:29lights there. So this is to to me this
- 32:32is 419 left on Lake Mills, right? Left
- 32:35on Fort Christmas. Okay. Um where would
- 32:39you say you met Cody on Fort Christmas?
- 32:42So wait, is this is this that other like
- 32:44neighborhood? I think maybe I'm wrong. I
- 32:46think it comes this way is is 419. This
- 32:50is where this county side. No, I think I
- 32:53think this
- 32:54is I think this is up by the Hitchen
- 32:57Post. You come up, you make a right on
- 32:58for Christmas. This is where the blanks
- 33:00are. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Cuz Yeah. This
- 33:03goes into Sultan or Picket Downs, right?
- 33:05Is right here. Then this is the circle.
- 33:08Is this where you live at? Where do you
- 33:09live at? If this is if this is like the
- 33:12entrance to Pickicket Down. Yeah, I live
- 33:13like Okay. So, here's there's blinking
- 33:15light. There's blinking lights right
- 33:17here so people don't run up into his
- 33:19house. I think that's what there's two
- 33:20red lights. Oh, yeah. That's on the
- 33:22dude's fence. Yeah. Then there's those
- 33:23sir. There's those two yellow arrow
- 33:26blinking one to the corner. The corner.
- 33:28So these are blinking lights here.
- 33:31All right. So then where do you and Cody
- 33:33meet? Like way down this road like Yeah.
- 33:36Further past on that road. So past does
- 33:40this dead end anywhere? I don't think
- 33:42so. I think it like it literally I think
- 33:44goes into Blo and then it go and then if
- 33:46you keep going it which was the way that
- 33:48I inevitably took it uh where it'll dump
- 33:51you out on to 50 and then I came up 50
- 33:54to go back to the Publix. Right. So here
- 33:56are the blinking lights. How far down do
- 33:58you think you met? Half mile, mile? Uh,
- 34:01I mean, a significant ways. I mean, just
- 34:05an approximate.
- 34:09I mean, I would say it was probably over
- 34:10a mile. Is this somewhere you and
- 34:12haven't met before? We know uh like you
- 34:15know where that if you're on this road,
- 34:18the intersection where it's like it
- 34:21intersects with another another road and
- 34:23then it's got like a guardrail or
- 34:24something like that right there. It was
- 34:26still past that area, but it was it was
- 34:29close to that intersection. Was it in
- 34:31the roadway? Like off the roadway or in
- 34:34Yeah, it just off. When someone is lying
- 34:36and you ask them to be specific, they
- 34:38usually get nervous or try to move on
- 34:40quickly. In the clip we just saw, that's
- 34:43exactly what happened. Amato tried to
- 34:45avoid giving a clear answer about where
- 34:47he was and instead mentioned a location
- 34:49that wasn't even on the map just to
- 34:51brush it off and move on.
- 34:54I think that there was something that
- 34:55obviously happened at the house. Tell me
- 34:58what happened. I don't know what
- 35:00happened. I know better. Listen to me. I
- 35:04know better. I can help you, Grant, with
- 35:07honesty. I can help you with honesty. We
- 35:11think something else happened before you
- 35:12left the home that you're either afraid
- 35:15of or embarrassed to talk about, but we
- 35:19need to know exactly what happened cuz
- 35:21like Danny said, we can place you there
- 35:23at certain times. And so we need to know
- 35:26what happened before you left that house
- 35:28because you didn't leave with everything
- 35:30being okay.
- 35:32I I honestly I don't I don't have
- 35:35anything else that I can really say. I
- 35:37mean, I don't I don't know. Do you even
- 35:38know why law enforcement got involved?
- 35:42The detectives made it clear they didn't
- 35:45believe his story. They started asking
- 35:47their questions more directly, cutting
- 35:49through the small talk. But Amato kept
- 35:51pretending he didn't understand, still
- 35:54playing dumb. He had to know their
- 35:56patience was running out. And it was
- 35:58only a matter of time before the
- 35:59pressure got to him. Like that, but
- 36:02something happened Thursday unlike
- 36:04anything you've ever experienced in 29
- 36:06years of your life. And maybe you felt
- 36:08that was rock bottom for you. You were
- 36:09getting kicked out of the house. Your
- 36:11father gave you an ultimatum. I mean,
- 36:13that's, you know, you're already dealing
- 36:15with the the debt and, you know, now you
- 36:18have to stop talking to this girl and
- 36:20now you're being kicked out of the home.
- 36:22I mean, that's I I can understand how
- 36:25you would
- 36:27feel. I mean, that you'd want to lash
- 36:29out or, you know, if something happened,
- 36:32you'd want to defend yourself. Sure.
- 36:34Absolutely. But we need to know what
- 36:37happened.
- 36:38I mean, I know I can tell that you guys
- 36:40are like leading me into a certain way
- 36:43of what
- 36:45the only thing we're leading you to is
- 36:46wanting to get the truth from you. Not
- 36:48trying to make you say something that's
- 36:50not true, that's not accurate. The
- 36:52truth. The end. That's it. That's all we
- 36:56want is the absolute truth. Because it's
- 36:58got to come from you. It can't come from
- 37:00us. It can't come from us. Do we know
- 37:02what happened? Yeah, we we we already
- 37:05know what happened, but it has to still
- 37:07come from you, the truth, because the
- 37:09parties
- 37:10involved. That's in all cases, you want
- 37:13the truth from I don't want somebody to
- 37:14say something that's not true.
- 37:15Absolutely not. I want them to say,
- 37:19"This is what happened, and here's why
- 37:21it happened." Cuz some sometimes there
- 37:23are things that are justifiable. I'm
- 37:25dealing with a case right now where some
- 37:28people were were jumped in a house.
- 37:30there was a shooting and the people
- 37:32involved in the shooting are not going
- 37:33to be charged because they have the
- 37:35right to defend themselves. Nothing in
- 37:37the in in in the state or federal law
- 37:39says you have to be seriously physically
- 37:43harmed or or or or killed. Nothing does.
- 37:46You have a right to defend yourself.
- 37:48Absolutely. You have fear of your sure
- 37:51you being hurt or your life. But Grant,
- 37:54I just need you to come. It's It's
- 37:56there. It's there. I can see it. It's on
- 37:58the tip of your tongue. You want to say,
- 38:00"Let me tell you what what happened."
- 38:03I'm being honest. I think you're being
- 38:04honest about 95% of the story. I truly
- 38:07do believe you're being honest about
- 38:08that. I think it's that 5% as most
- 38:10people because they're afraid to
- 38:12actually talk to us and tell us their
- 38:13story. And sometimes we can help justify
- 38:16their story once they tell us the truth.
- 38:19It just it it's it's a fact. It happens.
- 38:21The detectives laid it all out. They
- 38:23told Amato the version of events they
- 38:25believed had really happened. And deep
- 38:27down, Amato knew they were on to him. He
- 38:30could tell they believed he was the
- 38:31killer. They tried to reassure him,
- 38:34saying he'd be protected and that he was
- 38:36safe with them. All they wanted was the
- 38:38truth, nothing more. A motto was
- 38:41starting to crack, and the detectives
- 38:43saw it. So, they kept the pressure on
- 38:45knowing he was close to breaking. You
- 38:47got to open up. You got to open up to
- 38:49me, man. I'm here. here to take that
- 38:52information from you to get you over
- 38:54this hump to to little piece in your
- 38:58mind. You'll never have peace without
- 39:01saying here, let me know. This is
- 39:04exactly what happened. And I already I
- 39:06already know. I'll be honest. You
- 39:07already know. This isn't my first rodeo.
- 39:09She's been doing We've been doing this
- 39:10what between the two of us 50 years.
- 39:13Over 50 years. Our age. Over 50 years.
- 39:16I've seen So what is it you need to tell
- 39:18us that we're missing? step over. I
- 39:22mean, the only thing that I know is just
- 39:25that I mean, I I uh left the house later
- 39:28than what I had
- 39:30said.
- 39:33Um, did you leave the house with your
- 39:36brother Cody looking like
- 39:39that or did you leave the house with
- 39:41your father looking like that or your
- 39:44mother? Is that how you left your
- 39:46family?
- 39:49No,
- 39:52nobody. Nobody else went into that
- 39:54house. Who left your family like this?
- 39:57If you were the one that's been
- 39:58depressed, you were the one that owes
- 39:59money, you were the one that got into a
- 40:01confrontation with your father, who did
- 40:02this to your
- 40:06family. If you were trying to defend
- 40:09yourself or something else happened, we
- 40:11need to know now to help
- 40:15you. So, tell us what happened, Grant.
- 40:20We're here to listen to you. You need
- 40:22the truth. We're We're here to make this
- 40:26right. You got to tell the truth. It's
- 40:28on the tip of your tongue, my man. I get
- 40:30that. Did your father go after you and
- 40:32you try to protect yourself? No, I
- 40:35didn't do any of this.
- 40:43there there's something that's going to
- 40:44come
- 40:45up that
- 40:48that is going to make this all come
- 40:51real. I'd rather it come from you than
- 40:55have to do it that way cuz the evidence
- 40:57tells us what happened. You have to fill
- 40:59in the blanks. They can't tell me what
- 41:01happened. Fact. Fact. I know she she
- 41:04never she never held a gun. She didn't
- 41:07have a gun that night. Fact. He never
- 41:10fired a gun. Fact. He never fired a gun.
- 41:13Never did. This is the person right
- 41:16here. Mom. The detectives hit him hard
- 41:19with the photos, turning up the pressure
- 41:22as Amato began to break down. He started
- 41:24talking about how his father would
- 41:26threaten to hurt him if he messed up
- 41:28again or tried to come back home, trying
- 41:30to make it sound like he acted in
- 41:32self-defense. But the reports tell a
- 41:34different story. There were no signs of
- 41:36any fights happening in the house when
- 41:38his family died.
- 41:41Okay.
- 41:43This this is the the last time before
- 41:44I'm going to walk out now and then I'm
- 41:45done and I'm done for good. When I'm
- 41:47done I'm done
- 41:48done. They won't be hey can I come back
- 41:50and talk to you. The minute I walk out
- 41:52that door with your story is where you
- 41:55stay at. That's your that's your lot in
- 41:57life. I am more than willing to sit here
- 41:59all day and all night if you want to to
- 42:01talk to find the facts. But I can't I
- 42:04told you from the beginning I will not
- 42:05deal with somebody that's not being
- 42:06truthful with me. You're not being
- 42:07truthful. You're not telling me the
- 42:09truth. You've lied and we've forgiven
- 42:11you over that. We forgive you over it.
- 42:14You can't lie about this, Grant. You
- 42:16can't. This is too important for your
- 42:18family of what has happened. There's not
- 42:21somebody There's not somebody out
- 42:23running around United States that killed
- 42:26them. There's not. There's no There's
- 42:28nobody out there some hidden killer.
- 42:31There's not.
- 42:35You don't show the the remorse that you
- 42:37should for someone who's who lost three
- 42:38family
- 42:39members. Body language, eyes, and
- 42:43demeanor. Grant was showing all the
- 42:45signs of someone who felt guilty. The
- 42:47detective told him what they believed
- 42:49had really happened. But instead of
- 42:51backing down, Grant only pushed harder
- 42:53with his story. The detective told him
- 42:55he needed to confess. There was no
- 42:58imaginary killer out there. It was time
- 43:00to face the truth.
- 43:03body language, eyes, and demeanor.
- 43:06Here's the time, man. I know it's tough.
- 43:08Tell the truth because when I walk out,
- 43:10there is no there's no another day. And
- 43:12it's going to look worse for you when we
- 43:14prove it by the DNA, the gunpowder, the
- 43:19blood spatter,
- 43:20fingerprints. Now is the time for you to
- 43:22be honest with us and is exactly what
- 43:24happened in that house before you
- 43:26left. We We'll be there for weeks
- 43:29gathering evidence. We are going to
- 43:31build the case because we're going to
- 43:32disprove the fact that nobody else came
- 43:34in this house. We already we already
- 43:36know that answer, but at some point we
- 43:38will build a case to the conclusion that
- 43:40nobody else
- 43:44will. And I just I don't have anything
- 43:46else that I can say.
- 44:02You know, my brother even said the same
- 44:03thing of
- 44:05like when all this financial stuff was
- 44:08happening like why I couldn't show like
- 44:12a like sadness towards
- 44:14it and
- 44:17uh I just don't know. I mean I don't
- 44:26I just don't know what else to say.
- 44:30Do you not feel bad for doing this to
- 44:31your family?
- 44:42I I don't I don't know. You don't know
- 44:45what? You don't know if you feel bad for
- 44:46doing this to your family.
- 44:49I mean, I've been getting blamed for the
- 44:51last half a year for everything. And
- 44:53I've been trying to move forward into a
- 44:56positive
- 44:57direction. And then every day I'm
- 44:59reminded of all the trouble that I had
- 45:03caused. And then I keep being told the
- 45:07same thing over and over again, but
- 45:08there's nothing that I can do to change
- 45:10it. Do you regret doing this to each one
- 45:13of your family members? I didn't do that
- 45:15to each one of them. When the detectives
- 45:18asked Amato if he felt bad about what
- 45:20happened, there was only silence. Then
- 45:23he said he was blamed for everything and
- 45:25reminded of it every single day. The
- 45:28reason behind it all was right there. In
- 45:30his mind, Amato saw himself as innocent.
- 45:33He felt pushed to the edge and probably
- 45:35thought he had no way out. His whole
- 45:37life, everything had been given to him.
- 45:40But once he was kicked out of the house,
- 45:41it felt like an injury he could never
- 45:43heal from.
- 45:46And I just I don't have anything else
- 45:47that I can
- 46:02say. You know, my brother even said the
- 46:04same thing of
- 46:06like when all this financial stuff was
- 46:09happening like why I couldn't show like
- 46:13a like sadness towards it.
- 46:16And
- 46:18uh I just don't know. I mean, I
- 46:25don't I just don't know what else to
- 46:30say. Do you not feel bad for doing this
- 46:32to your family?
- 46:43I I don't I don't know. You don't know
- 46:46what? You don't know if you feel bad for
- 46:47doing this to your family.
- 46:50I mean, I've been getting blamed for the
- 46:52last half a year for everything. And
- 46:54I've been trying to move forward into a
- 46:57positive
- 46:58direction. And then every day I'm
- 47:00reminded of all the trouble that I had
- 47:04caused. And then I keep being told the
- 47:08same thing over and over again, but
- 47:09there's nothing that I can do to change
- 47:11it. Do you regret doing this to each one
- 47:14of your family members? I didn't do that
- 47:16to each one of them.
- 47:21Who did? Who has such an axe to grind
- 47:24with your family that they shot him
- 47:26twice in the head, him in the head, and
- 47:28her? Who has it? Who? Here, you sit in
- 47:31my seat for a
- 47:33minute. Sit in my seat. Get out of here.
- 47:35Sit right here. Come here. Sit right
- 47:37here. Get out of that seat. Sit right
- 47:38there for me. Sit on it. Look at it.
- 47:40Look at it from from from our side. Look
- 47:43at it from our
- 47:45side. Think of it from what the way we
- 47:47look at it. Independent. What are we
- 47:50here for? One thing. The blindfolded
- 47:53ladies with justice. Justice. All we're
- 47:55here for. Justice. Look at it. Who has a
- 48:00motive? Who has a motive to hurt your
- 48:02family?
- 48:04You could say Jason, but we already know
- 48:06where Jason was. I can account for every
- 48:08bit of of Jason's
- 48:11activity. Every bit of it. Jason gave a
- 48:14statement. He What's the first thing we
- 48:15looked at? Is Jason telling the truth?
- 48:18Can we verify what he told us? And in
- 48:21quick succession, we did. He said, "I
- 48:23was XXX." Yep. He sure was.
- 48:29And we know exactly when Cody left work.
- 48:33and know when Cody got home and know
- 48:35when Cody stopped answering his
- 48:40phone and know when bills were
- 48:43paid and knows when vehicles left and
- 48:47know when they when phones tagged
- 48:53hotspots. Know it all. Know every bit of
- 48:56it. Now it's time for you to admit to
- 48:59what you know cuz you're saying I didn't
- 49:01do something. I don't know
- 49:04something. It's an easy easy thing to
- 49:06say to yourself, but you can't say it to
- 49:09us
- 49:12because facts and evidence don't lie.
- 49:16I've done everything I can do to get to
- 49:19the bottom in the
- 49:20truth,
- 49:22and we're not getting
- 49:25there. But I promise you down the down
- 49:28at some point, the facts will get there.
- 49:32And then you're going to ask, "Hey, can
- 49:33I talk to you and tell you what
- 49:35happened?" And the answer is
- 49:37no. After it's after we walk out of the
- 49:40room, like I said, when it's done, there
- 49:42is not a second chance. There's only
- 49:44there's one time to make a first
- 49:46impression. Heard that one before. This
- 49:48is it. I believe you're not a bad guy. I
- 49:52do. I believe you want to tell us what
- 49:54happened. And there's a reason this got
- 49:56so bad. There's a reason.
- 50:00They're all safe.
- 50:32I mean, I just I don't have anything
- 50:34else that I can
- 50:36say. I mean, I don't I don't have the
- 50:38answers
- 50:40that you can say or want to say that I
- 50:42can say. I mean, I don't I don't know. I
- 50:45don't I I know from sitting over here
- 50:49what it looks like. I mean, it's just
- 50:51like when I was accused of the whole
- 50:53grand theft thing and then it's, you
- 50:55know, everything from security cameras
- 50:58and all this other stuff are saying
- 50:59this, that, and the other, but then
- 51:00there's nothing that showed that I had
- 51:03done anything
- 51:07wrong. And I just I don't know what else
- 51:10I can say.
- 51:13[Music]
- 51:20So what they accused you of you didn't
- 51:22do.
- 51:36Grand two things that happened here
- 51:39today. Two
- 51:41things. You're a guy swimming out in the
- 51:44middle of the ocean and we're going to
- 51:45give you one of two things based on
- 51:47based on you. You can have a life
- 51:49preserver to keep to keep from drowning
- 51:52or you get the boat
- 51:56anchor. Which one do you
- 51:59want? Cuz we will give you whichever one
- 52:01you asked for. The life preserver, the
- 52:04boater.
- 52:07No, I want the life preserver that I've
- 52:08said everything that I can. You You want
- 52:10it and I I believe you do, but you have
- 52:13not said everything you can say. Be
- 52:16careful of locking yourself into
- 52:17something because just like this, you've
- 52:19locked yourself into I was down for
- 52:22Christmas. That's where me and Cody met,
- 52:24which we've proven to be a lie. We We
- 52:27already knew that. We already knew that
- 52:28wasn't true. But I'm going to let you
- 52:29say it. I'm going to let you say what
- 52:33you want to about being honest in
- 52:35here. And then at some point, we will
- 52:38pick that apart of why you're not honest
- 52:41and what physical evidence shows to be.
- 52:45what physical evidence shows to
- 52:52me. You want to be honest. This is this
- 52:54is the time right now to be honest. You
- 52:57see, if I can say what you you're saying
- 52:59what you want to say to me right now,
- 53:01just like you wanted me to believe that
- 53:03you were down on Fort Christmas down the
- 53:04road with Cody, that you wanted to.
- 53:07That's what you wanted me to believe.
- 53:09And there's a reason you were being
- 53:10deceptive to me. Because it doesn't
- 53:12matter where you met him and had this
- 53:13conversation. If you lie about something
- 53:15small, you lie about something
- 53:17big. You're being deceptive over
- 53:20something that doesn't matter if you met
- 53:22him down the road or not. There's no
- 53:23reason to lie about where you met him
- 53:26at. This is it. Your one chance in the
- 53:30rest of your life to be honest about
- 53:32this right here. You say, "I've told you
- 53:34what I can tell you. You told me what
- 53:36you want me to know just like you told
- 53:38me what you wanted me to know about
- 53:39that." and for Eva to know what you want
- 53:41to know about that. But it's not it's
- 53:43not
- 53:44true. Just like you want to tell me what
- 53:47you want me to know about
- 53:52this. I get this. I get that. I don't
- 53:57get that. I don't get that. I don't get
- 54:00it. I
- 54:04don't one I get. I
- 54:07understand. She didn't bully you. She
- 54:09didn't belittle you. She didn't run you
- 54:11into the ground. Nor did we. I don't get
- 54:16it. But this is it. Cuz you're just
- 54:19about I've kind of got a number in my
- 54:21mind that I'm going to get up and I'm
- 54:22going to walk out and we'll take our
- 54:24stuff and be on our way and you're going
- 54:25to go the way you
- 54:26go. But there will be a time where you
- 54:29ask for that life preserver. I can't
- 54:33give it to you. I can't. Once I cross
- 54:36once I cross the line, I got to step
- 54:38over. Can't do it. Won't do
- 54:44it. Think think about
- 54:46that. I want to talk to her for a
- 54:48minute. Think think about the the the
- 54:50the
- 54:52last life preserve I can give
- 54:55you. Think about it. Take a few minutes
- 54:58just to to reflect on it and then we'll
- 55:01come back to you in a couple of minutes
- 55:02and then we'll go from there. And what
- 55:04happens is what happens. Fair enough.
- 55:10[Applause]

- 1:05:57while longer? You okay?
- 1:05:59I mean, I just I just don't have
- 1:06:01anything more that I can say. Fine.
- 1:06:03Okay.

- 1:06:06stay, we'll I'll talk to you till

- 1:06:29not I'm not detaining you. I'm not

- 1:06:46of of I said you're voluntarily here.
- 1:06:53I mean, I just I don't I don't know what
- 1:06:55the
- 1:06:58I will I will stay here and talk to you
- 1:07:00until you get everything off your chest
- 1:07:01as as long as you want to. The
- 1:07:03detectives stepped out of the room and
- 1:07:05asked if Amato needed anything. The
- 1:07:07interrogation was basically over. They
- 1:07:09already knew who did it. Now all they
- 1:07:11needed was his confession. They reminded
- 1:07:14him he was free to leave. Amato said he
- 1:07:17didn't want to be there, but just wanted
- 1:07:19it all to be over. After a while,
- 1:07:21nothing happened. He went to change his
- 1:07:24clothes and then his older brother
- 1:07:26showed up. The brother lived on his own
- 1:07:27and wasn't at the house when the murders
- 1:07:29happened.
- 1:07:51All right. So, uh I I take it you know
- 1:07:53what happened. Yeah.
- 1:08:00I just I'm going to ask you plain out.
- 1:08:02You are not part of it anyway. No.
- 1:08:05How when's the last time you sold
- 1:08:08everybody?
- 1:08:09I left the house between like uh
- 1:08:12midnight and like 12:30
- 1:08:15on Thursday night. So Friday morning
- 1:08:17going in the front.
- 1:08:20Why? Just did that's when you went to a
- 1:08:22hotel? No. No. The first night I uh I
- 1:08:26stayed just in the public's parking lot
- 1:08:28by the tractor supply. Okay. And why did
- 1:08:32you leave though? It's cuz dad had
- 1:08:34kicked me out Thursday because I was
- 1:08:38still talking to the woman that had
- 1:08:40caused everything and I was uh using
- 1:08:43mom's cell phone to do that with her
- 1:08:45knowledge but uh no not uh Cody or
- 1:08:50dad's. So then dad found out somehow
- 1:08:54uh and that was one of the things that
- 1:08:56he had said would lead to
- 1:08:59my being removed from the premises.
- 1:09:04So he forced you, he basically told you
- 1:09:07you had to leave. Yeah.
- 1:09:15Okay. So, who could have done this?
- 1:09:20I don't So, you didn't have any problems
- 1:09:22or troubles with this woman or the
- 1:09:24online? You didn't owe them any money? I
- 1:09:26mean, there's no like lone shark out
- 1:09:28looking for you or
- 1:09:30I just don't see
- 1:09:34how things aren't adding up. I
- 1:09:38just I'm really confused,
- 1:09:43Grant. I don't understand. How did you
- 1:09:46get money to pay for a hotel? I still
- 1:09:49had a few hundred on my debit card and
- 1:09:53then Cody uh gave me his debit card.
- 1:09:58Okay. And
- 1:10:02even his own brother didn't believe him.
- 1:10:05Judging by his reaction, he was crushed.
- 1:10:07It's a heartbreaking moment knowing that
- 1:10:10your youngest brother did the
- 1:10:11unthinkable and took away your family.
- 1:10:13Yet, you still don't feel hatred toward
- 1:10:15him. The family was gone and the
- 1:10:18youngest brother who killed them would
- 1:10:20spend the rest of his life in prison. At
- 1:10:22the trial, Amato kept saying he was
- 1:10:24innocent, but he was found guilty on all
- 1:10:26three murder charges. At the end, he
- 1:10:29said something that stuck with everyone.
- 1:10:31My family blamed me for months for
- 1:10:33ruining their lives and stealing.
