Full transcript
- 0:01hey guys so I hope everyone had a great
- 0:05Thanksgiving I know my head looks a
- 0:07little weird my hair looks a little
- 0:08funny because I don't want it to get cut
- 0:11off so I realized that I have a white
- 0:13headset which is going to cut my um head
- 0:17off and it was very annoying when I
- 0:19watched the last video that I recorded
- 0:21So in my quest to find different stuff
- 0:25and in my quest to change my channel a
- 0:27little and make it about True Crime not
- 0:31just about making a murderer and Chris
- 0:34Watts which I'm going to do a video on
- 0:35as well um just to let you guys know I'm
- 0:38still doing a live tonight at 9:00 so
- 0:40this video is just like an add extra
- 0:42bonus so in my quest to do this I ended
- 0:46up thinking you know who can I who do I
- 0:49know personally that's ever been wrongly
- 0:52convicted or had a false confession and
- 0:55I remember that there was this huge case
- 0:58I'm not even sure how I forgotten the
- 0:59first but but there was this huge case
- 1:01when I was growing up um you may have
- 1:03heard of him by the name of Martin
- 1:05tangli Marty was a typical 17-year-old
- 1:09very very rich kid his parents owned a
- 1:12bagel star that we all used to hang out
- 1:14at and it was in a shopping center that
- 1:16we all used to hang out at and any of my
- 1:18personal friends that are watching this
- 1:19video know exactly what I'm talking
- 1:21about and we all knew that he didn't do
- 1:24it it just I mean this was a really rich
- 1:28kid there is no I mean he would have
- 1:30made more money with his parents alive
- 1:33than I mean it was just a big nightmare
- 1:36but the thing about it was his parents
- 1:38weren't just killed they were executed I
- 1:40mean it was bad and there was just no
- 1:43way this 17-year-old kid did it it was a
- 1:46false confession he falsely confessed
- 1:49from what I remember him telling us or
- 1:52telling me is that like they had him
- 1:54interrogated for like 48 or 72 hours or
- 1:58something they wouldn't feed him they
- 2:00wouldn't give him drinks and this is
- 2:02suffa County Police the highest paid
- 2:05police force in the entire world I mean
- 2:08they I know cop your regular street cop
- 2:10in suffa county is making about 120,000
- 2:13a year as compared to New York City
- 2:15where they make like $30,000 a year I
- 2:18mean everybody wants to be a suffa
- 2:20County cop because they are making bank
- 2:23but needless to say they had him like
- 2:25locked up for like 72 hours they
- 2:27wouldn't feed them they wouldn't give
- 2:29them drinks they wouldn't let him sleep
- 2:32I mean they were not giving up until he
- 2:35confessed to murdering his parents and
- 2:37finally he did that kept him in prison
- 2:40for 17 years and I don't know how many
- 2:43of you guys are familiar with New York
- 2:45state prisons they're no joke I mean
- 2:47they're comparable to like St Quinton
- 2:50you have places like Atta um Riker's
- 2:53Island I mean these Max security prisons
- 2:55are
- 2:57serious don't compare to other places in
- 3:00Max Securities in Alabama or Max
- 3:02Securities in I mean they are for real
- 3:06anyway um moving on fluffing not
- 3:09fluffing Not Butter wants to go out and
- 3:10he's going to annoy me this whole video
- 3:12I wish I had a pause button on OBS but I
- 3:14don't so you may have to hear him for a
- 3:16little while so needless say um I
- 3:20contacted Marty I'm still Facebook
- 3:22friends with him I haven't spoke to him
- 3:24in a while but I'm still Facebook
- 3:25friends with him and I have spoken to
- 3:29him you know like we all knew each other
- 3:31when we were young so hopefully he'll
- 3:34get back to me and agree to do an
- 3:35interview with me but what makes his
- 3:38story so unbelievable remarkable so
- 3:41unbelievably remarkable is the fact that
- 3:44he's now an attorney for New York State
- 3:47he works with you know trying to free
- 3:48the innocent he works with the innocent
- 3:50project of New York he's a DieHard
- 3:52Advocate obviously for you know people
- 3:55that make false confessions I know Laura
- 3:58Brendan's attorney had done stuff with
- 4:00him but if you haven't checked out a
- 4:02story you should his name is Martin
- 4:04tankleff absolutely inspirational story
- 4:07so until he gets back to me I'll let you
- 4:09guys know hopefully he's watching but
- 4:11I'll let you guys know um for the future
- 4:14if he agrees to do this you know
- 4:15interview with me for the show um but in
- 4:19my quest for it you know reaching out to
- 4:22him yesterday I came across on his
- 4:25Facebook another exer that he recently
- 4:28helped get out and after 27 years this
- 4:32guy's story was so unbelievably touching
- 4:36I wanted to share it and I spent hours
- 4:38yesterday doing a PowerPoint about it
- 4:40with showing all of his artwork I really
- 4:43hope I don't get in trouble for redoing
- 4:45his artwork so let me state that
- 4:47throughout the PowerPoint there there is
- 4:50a link um it's Valentino
- 4:54dixon.ca I made it into a PowerPoint
- 4:57showing his amazing artwork once I get
- 5:00into the PowerPoint I kind of repeat
- 5:02that but so be it it's absolutely
- 5:05unbelievable I mean this man made these
- 5:07paintings in a 4x8 gel cell over 27
- 5:12years and his artwork just speaks for
- 5:15itself so without further Ado let me get
- 5:18into the story so you guys can see
- 5:21exactly what I
- 5:22see his name is Valentino Dixon I'm
- 5:25calling it making an Exon only because I
- 5:28didn't make that title but I'm doing it
- 5:31because that is what Georgetown
- 5:33University uh named the class in order
- 5:36to get him out and you're going to
- 5:38understand all that by the end of this
- 5:41presentation and I said this incredible
- 5:44story of never giving up
- 5:47hope so as I already said all the
- 5:50artwork that you're going to see is like
- 5:52every single picture on here is one that
- 5:54he drew from prison you can find you can
- 5:57buy all of his artwork at Valentino
- 5:59di.com
- 6:01um picture all every picture is $99
- 6:04except for the ones that have four which
- 6:07you'll see later on in the presentation
- 6:09um those are uh
- 6:12239 or
- 6:14299 but again you can see it all just
- 6:16going to Valentino
- 6:18dixon.ca my mind that he did this stuff
- 6:21with wood pencils and in a Jael cell
- 6:25it's just it's crazy to me and you'll
- 6:28see what I mean as we go
- 6:34on what he States is because the law
- 6:37states that the prosecution has a duty
- 6:39and an obligation to seek the truth not
- 6:41just a conviction I thought that quote
- 6:44was awesome to open this up with because
- 6:46he's right and I find so many
- 6:49similarities to the railroading that
- 6:51happened to Steph and Brenan and the
- 6:54false confession and how prosecutions
- 6:57just they don't care about the truth
- 6:59they just want to
- 7:01convict so I was he says he was hanging
- 7:04out a fast food restaurant now
- 7:06journalist Max Adler which you're going
- 7:07to see how he ties in at the end of the
- 7:10presentation um says there were about 70
- 7:13teenagers at the restaurant that night
- 7:15popular hangout spot kind of reminded me
- 7:18of the shopping center we all used to
- 7:20hang out at and there was a fist fight
- 7:22that turned into a gunfight shots rang
- 7:24out he uh Dixon jumped in his car and
- 7:27pulled away he fled um didn't want to
- 7:30have anything to do with this Adler says
- 7:32there were four people shot one of them
- 7:34was a teenager by the name of Toriano
- 7:36Jackson he ended up
- 7:40dying it can happen to you it can happen
- 7:43to a loved one it can happen to a family
- 7:45member this is why it's so serious and
- 7:48what he's talking about is a false
- 7:50confession or falsely being accused of
- 7:53something that you didn't
- 7:57do so the investigation started is he
- 8:00left the scene then shortly he was
- 8:02pulled over police interrogated him they
- 8:05asked him you know were you at the scene
- 8:07next thing you know I'm being charge of
- 8:08murder just because I said I was there
- 8:11he could not believe what he was hearing
- 8:13but he felt like all right you know what
- 8:15IE Witnesses are going to clear me of
- 8:17this it's all good dozens of witnesses
- 8:20not one person had the same
- 8:22story um according to Adler who spent
- 8:25years following this I I'm sorry who
- 8:28spent um tons the time uh reading
- 8:30through pages of pages and pages of
- 8:33files um he said eyewitnesses insisted
- 8:37that Dixon had not committed the crime
- 8:40and two days later after the shooting
- 8:42Lamar Scott confessed to the murder but
- 8:45the prosecution didn't care they still
- 8:48went after Valentino Dixon and what He
- 8:51suggests is that nobody wanted to admit
- 8:53that a mistake was made came down to
- 8:56embarrassment came down to egos the
- 8:58culture was that well well we're not
- 9:00going to say that we made a mistake here
- 9:02um that sounds a awful lot like curn
- 9:06when in Steven's first trial anybody
- 9:09that knows me knows that I'm was never
- 9:11capable of what they accused me of and
- 9:13that's what hurt me to the core you know
- 9:16like why would you accuse me of this and
- 9:19then when you realize that I didn't do
- 9:21it why would you ignore that mistake and
- 9:24I think that's one of the things that
- 9:25bother us about Avery
- 9:27is admit you made the mistake and move
- 9:30on don't try to cover it up by accusing
- 9:32him of something else um I mean like
- 9:35it's the worst thing in the world that
- 9:37you can blame a person for is murder I
- 9:39don't know if murder or rape is worse
- 9:41but like it doesn't get any worse than
- 9:45that uh Gandhi once said be the change
- 9:48you want to see in the world and I
- 9:50couldn't agree with that more and that's
- 9:53what we have to do as sleuths as online
- 9:56detectives whatever you want to call us
- 9:58we have to be the change we have to show
- 10:01the world that this stuff needs to
- 10:03change like we can't keep living like
- 10:05this so then the trial comes and before
- 10:08I even get into that I mean look at the
- 10:10detail on this this is in jail with
- 10:12pencils wood pencils that is insane I
- 10:17mean I I was so In Awe by this guy's
- 10:20artwork and his artwork is what
- 10:23eventually what got him free so the case
- 10:26went to trial in '92 he hoped that the
- 10:29discovery process would clear his name
- 10:31but next thing you know prosecut is
- 10:32charging two of the witnesses of perjury
- 10:35before trial so for stating that he
- 10:38didn't commit the crime they charged
- 10:40them with perjury I've never known
- 10:42anybody to charge him with perjury and
- 10:45he had some criminal record
- 10:47like you find out that you know he was a
- 10:48cocaine dealer he carried a gun like he
- 10:50wasn't the you know most perfect angel
- 10:53but they were railroading him just for
- 10:56having a you know probably one for being
- 10:58black and I'm not one to say that you
- 11:00know that's why they go after them but
- 11:03it's it's a very good possibility
- 11:05because he was black it didn't matter
- 11:07that the other black man killed him
- 11:09maybe they were after for some other
- 11:10reason maybe they just didn't like his
- 11:12clothes I mean it's so
- 11:14horrendous so then this other witness
- 11:17was afraid of coming forward um instead
- 11:19of just kind of letting the jury have
- 11:21all the facts and letting them sorted
- 11:24out prosecutor very vindictively
- 11:26selected who would testify and that was
- 11:29the only people who agreed with his
- 11:31version of the story a good attorney
- 11:34would have been able to protect his
- 11:35client but Dixon's public defender who
- 11:38had only visited him once in 10 months
- 11:41leading up to the trial was anything but
- 11:44that so inless you guys want to hear
- 11:46fluffing not of bark all day I got to
- 11:48let them out hold
- 11:55up okay so fluffing not is out of the
- 11:58room
- 12:00um moving on so the trial began the
- 12:03lawyer didn't even give an opening
- 12:05argument Dixon said he waved his opening
- 12:08argument and then he didn't even call
- 12:10any Witnesses not one witness to the
- 12:12stand he didn't even introduce one
- 12:14exhibitor in trial jury found me guilty
- 12:17give me 38 years 38 and a half years to
- 12:20life now when he got convicted in
- 12:221992 it's a different system than it is
- 12:25now in New York because even before I
- 12:28left New York now it's mandatory
- 12:30minimums so if you there's no more like
- 12:3318 to life you get 18 years you get 25
- 12:37years you get 50 years you get life you
- 12:39no longer get out for early Behavior you
- 12:41like it's it's different than it was in
- 12:43'92 but in '92 we got 38 and a half
- 12:46years to
- 12:48life so he was 21 years old he went to
- 12:52ateka atut is one of the worst prisons
- 12:54in New York state see Infamous U Maximum
- 12:57Security Prison in Western New York
- 12:59state which is Upstate New York um for
- 13:02the first seven years he was in such a
- 13:05state of depression he said that he
- 13:07didn't have any drive or determination
- 13:09when it came to anything positive he
- 13:11learned what he could about the law at
- 13:13the prison Library he kept a meticulous
- 13:15list of the mistakes that have been made
- 13:17in trial I mean when you're 21 years old
- 13:20you don't know what your you know lawyer
- 13:22did wrong you don't know what you need
- 13:23to do he filed an appeal the same judge
- 13:27when we filed a post conviction motion
- 13:28said said I received a fair trial who
- 13:31does that sound like ad says Valentino's
- 13:34family was still fighting for him they
- 13:36were not going to give up his father did
- 13:38all he could to take the investigation
- 13:40into his own hands and attorneys would
- 13:42take his money and then really do
- 13:44nothing it became his nightmare and he
- 13:47was desponded I mean you can't blame him
- 13:49I'd be the same
- 13:51way and he quotes as well that you know
- 13:54for the first seven years he was in such
- 13:56a state of depression but the reason why
- 13:58I put this up here this picture is the
- 14:00one that got him noticed by Golf Digest
- 14:03Magazine which is essentially what
- 14:07Freedom so my uh I'm sorry Alan Turing
- 14:10had put a quote that I thought fit
- 14:13perfectly with this whole story and that
- 14:16we can see a short distance ahead but we
- 14:19can see plenty that needs to be done to
- 14:22me that scream you know I I heard the
- 14:25quote I thought of the quote and I
- 14:26thought you know what that so applies to
- 14:29the justice system because it's so
- 14:32true so Dixon Drew every day um and you
- 14:35can find his entire story online um I
- 14:39just took bits and pieces from different
- 14:41stories to put together you know one
- 14:44complete presentation so in 2010 his
- 14:47drawings got attention to the warden one
- 14:50day he says Dixon you think you could
- 14:52draw me my favorite golf course and I
- 14:54said sure I'll draw it for you um it's
- 14:56no more than a landscape and a flag so
- 14:58why not
- 14:59wouldn't brought in a photo it was
- 15:01Augusta I believe it was the 12th hole I
- 15:04drew it for him he loved it a soulmate
- 15:06told him he should draw some more golf
- 15:09courses so he's his feeling was the hell
- 15:12am I going to draw golf courses for like
- 15:14what's the point um I've never even been
- 15:17to a golf course so his soulmate said
- 15:20because I think you do really good at it
- 15:22so for whatever reason this cellmate
- 15:24planted the seat of why he should draw
- 15:26golf courses and Dixon said it was like
- 15:29strangest thing that he's ever dealt
- 15:30with so another quote from that story
- 15:34that came to mind was you're always
- 15:35trying to be normal we will never know
- 15:37how amazing you can be because I mean if
- 15:41you think about his life and what he's
- 15:42endured for however amount of years when
- 15:46he started WR you know drawing golf
- 15:48courses it's Maya Angelo just came to
- 15:51mind with an inspiring quote because you
- 15:53know he was so down on his luck and so
- 15:56dead on his luck and you know now he's
- 15:58got inspiration
- 15:59and when you're doing 38 years to life
- 16:02you need inspiration in jail just to
- 16:04survive every day I like I I can't even
- 16:07comprehend 27 years same thing with
- 16:09Stephen I can't even comprehend 27
- 16:13years um so how this all started was he
- 16:18started reading columns with Max Adler
- 16:21Max Adler is a co-author or has a yeah
- 16:24co-author of monthly Golf Digest column
- 16:28so they Chronicle the ways that people
- 16:30use the game to get through a hard thing
- 16:33that they were going through in their
- 16:34life like why golfers you know what gets
- 16:36through Golf and any golfers out there
- 16:39who know I'm sure have read this
- 16:41article now Dixon on the
- 16:48flip okay Dixon on the flip side sorry
- 16:51about my technical difficulties and dog
- 16:53difficulties but it's too long of a
- 16:55video to keep redoing so we're just
- 16:57going to deal with it
- 16:59um Chronicle the ways that people use
- 17:02the game and Dixon says he have friends
- 17:06that committed suicide in prison you
- 17:08know you could be strong today and
- 17:09tomorrow can be like you know what I got
- 17:1120 years and I'm ending this I would um
- 17:15I can't do any more time and I felt like
- 17:17at that point I was on borrow time and
- 17:19golf was going to was saving my life
- 17:22then one day in 2011 M now remember he's
- 17:25been in there since '92 Max Edler went
- 17:29to his office at Golf Digest and in his
- 17:31inbox was this letter from um Dixon and
- 17:35it had a picture in it I'm not going to
- 17:37read verbatim but it had a picture in it
- 17:39and in that picture was a golf course
- 17:42and he said the Tranquil image of grass
- 17:46skies and tree and water he said it was
- 17:48as far away from your cell as one could
- 17:51possibly get so Martin Luther King I
- 17:55didn't want to change the words of such
- 17:57a great quote but if you can't can't fly
- 17:59then run if you can't run then walk if
- 18:02you can't walk then crawl but whatever
- 18:04you do you have to keep moving and my
- 18:07feeling is if you change moving to
- 18:10believing you just have to keep
- 18:11believing so my advice to Stephen and
- 18:14Brenan is just keep believing keep
- 18:17believing in Hope keep believing that
- 18:19the truth will come out because
- 18:21eventually it just has to it's going to
- 18:23happen
- 18:25eventually um you guys did not commit
- 18:28this rrific
- 18:30murder um so Dixon in 2012 invited Adler
- 18:35to come see him and he did and Adler
- 18:38said he went in there with some serious
- 18:41doubts he didn't know um what was going
- 18:45to come of it and he ended up pouring
- 18:48over thousands upon thousands of legal
- 18:51documents and then the story appeared in
- 18:54Golf Digest it was a first piece written
- 18:57by Valentino ghost written by Adler
- 19:00which he explained a peace and
- 19:01Tranquility that he found in the look of
- 19:03the sport and then attached to that was
- 19:05a much longer piece investigating his
- 19:07case and show that it was pretty clear
- 19:10instance of local officials seizing a
- 19:12moment to Railroad a young guy with a
- 19:14criminal background into a prison for a
- 19:16crime he didn't commit major news
- 19:19outlets became interested I mean that's
- 19:20the thing when you have someone like
- 19:22Adler you know do a worldwide story like
- 19:26this with you know reputable people
- 19:29people are going to notice and it
- 19:30noticed Georgetown government and law
- 19:32professor Mark Howard he noticed uh
- 19:36that's also who Mart um uh Martin
- 19:38tankleff is a professor for them as well
- 19:42as being an attorney um in January of 18
- 19:46Howard presented Dixon's case at
- 19:48Georgetown in a class called making an
- 19:51exonerate three undergrad students
- 19:54definitively went to
- 19:56work and on September 19 19 of 2018
- 20:00exonary was made Valentino Dixon got out
- 20:03got his first real day in court he
- 20:06walked out that day he walked in that
- 20:08day in shackles and literally walked out
- 20:11a free man it's it's amazing it took 207
- 20:15years like it's it's still mindblowing
- 20:18to me so I mean the moral of this whole
- 20:21presentation was we need change in the
- 20:24justice
- 20:25system one no one person can do it alone
- 20:29but collectively we can do it
- 20:32together false confessions I mean I
- 20:35understand that our system gets it right
- 20:3895% of the time but when 3 to 5% of
- 20:42prisoners are innocent and you have
- 20:44someone like this with a talent like
- 20:46this that completely was wasted because
- 20:50you know he got in trouble when he was
- 20:51young or he had a criminal record or
- 20:53Martin tangli was a you know who knows
- 20:55what he could have been he may have
- 20:57still been a lawyer but the fact that
- 21:00these people you know so many false
- 21:04convictions this is what we need to
- 21:06focus on because this is what needs to
- 21:08change and you know you hear story after
- 21:12story after story that sounds like the
- 21:14same story but it's not it's all
- 21:16different states now Martin got Marty
- 21:19got eight a couple of million dollars I
- 21:22don't know was 3 million or 8 million
- 21:24from New York state but I can assure you
- 21:27if he's if he hadn't have been blamed in
- 21:29the first place that $8 million is
- 21:32nothing compared to what his parents
- 21:34would have left I mean I'm I'm he was
- 21:36that rich so the fact that he still went
- 21:40to be an attorney he does everything
- 21:42that you could that's what I see
- 21:44Valentino I don't see Marty giving up
- 21:46fighting for Valentino um Valentino
- 21:49deserves everything he gets he should
- 21:51open up an art mum with all of his art
- 21:54and I wish him the absolute best I'm
- 21:56going to try to reach out to him since
- 21:58it's new maybe I can get an interview
- 22:00with him as well but his story is so
- 22:02inspiring to me um I just had to do a
- 22:05presentation on it so that was all I
