  1. 0:00yeah can you hear me I perfect got it
  2. 0:05took a little while but we got it
  3. 0:08alright so how are you okay that's good
  4. 0:13I'm so I'm really glad you decided to
  5. 0:17come a lot a lot of people are very
  6. 0:19interested in your case thanks to
  7. 0:22brendan dassey's case and with making a
  8. 0:25murderer i know you're familiar with it
  9. 0:27um tell me I mean I could give you a
  10. 0:29whole intro but tell me your story like
  11. 0:33I know your story obviously but Tommy in
  12. 0:36your words how it started like
  13. 0:38background everything person I'm that
  14. 0:51you were falsely accused on September
  15. 0:547th of 2 of 1988 for killing your
  16. 0:58parents or executing your parents which
  17. 1:00you were you I'm admitted to a crime
  18. 1:04that you did not do you knew from day
  19. 1:06one that it was your father's business
  20. 1:11partner we all knew was your father's
  21. 1:13business partner and somehow you got
  22. 1:17roped into confessing to this because of
  23. 1:20the police lies saying that you know
  24. 1:23your father told you that you did it
  25. 1:25when you didn't do it saying that your
  26. 1:28father you know woke up from a coma and
  27. 1:30said you did it when you didn't do it
  28. 1:32and just told you a whole bunch of lies
  29. 1:33so is that about the record in the
  30. 1:45interrogation is not so what was
  31. 1:49determined early deviating was nothing
  32. 1:54near the cornea and masochism chose not
  33. 1:59to it was a really steaming there's
  34. 2:12[Music]
  35. 2:39oh okay how did you feel that they were
  36. 2:58pinning it on you from day one I mean
  37. 3:04when you know in your heart you know
  38. 3:07actually did it Jerry Stewart did George
  39. 3:22to me was my last words there he faded
  40. 3:28now he changes of appearance
  41. 3:30he told the family be swimming in the
  42. 3:32fish between the planet from New York
  43. 3:37New Jersey
  44. 3:45you've landed from New Jersey California
  45. 3:49he changed to the cavalry he was in a
  46. 3:53psychiatric take all of those factors
  47. 3:58and say clearly either the son of
  48. 4:01clearly considered as honest fact
  49. 4:04especially we add in the fact that his
  50. 4:07son was a drug dealer you
  51. 4:10for others when Jerry himself and I
  52. 4:16remember that I vaguely vaguely remember
  53. 4:19that now that you're saying it but I
  54. 4:21remember because we used to hang out at
  55. 4:23the bowling alley all the time and
  56. 4:24Schroth more and I vaguely remember that
  57. 4:27it's funny that you said that because I
  58. 4:28just but even as a teenager I remember
  59. 4:49everybody saying it was his dad's
  60. 4:51business partner why didn't the cups
  61. 4:54ever I mean if we were like what 17 when
  62. 4:57you were arrested and then 1920 I mean I
  63. 5:00left after 9/11 but you know 17 18 19
  64. 5:04the rumor mill all over Belle Terre
  65. 5:06Belle Terre country club like oh it was
  66. 5:09definitely the business partner and we
  67. 5:54argued we argue that how it was for be
  68. 5:58there and you know and what was even
  69. 6:07freakier was that photo had an appointed
  70. 6:10water walking theme we're the only
  71. 6:13University
  72. 6:14you also that a time and had an
  73. 6:15initiative in the breeding so every step
  74. 6:19of the way it was a little rush
  75. 6:22inclusion misconduct the people don't
  76. 6:27want to acknowledge because she's our
  77. 6:31famous I think that's been shaken
  78. 6:35recently over the last I would say ten
  79. 6:38years pretty much in every department
  80. 6:40between all the racism with the cops and
  81. 6:43or suppose it racism and so on and so
  82. 6:46forth when I did my masters in criminal
  83. 6:49justice one thing that I've always felt
  84. 6:52and I get feedback positive negative is
  85. 6:56that a lot of the problem in the system
  86. 6:58is public defenders not that rich people
  87. 7:01don't go to jail or not that you know
  88. 7:03hired attorneys don't go to jail but so
  89. 7:06many public defenders are against
  90. 7:08clients and as soon as cops here they're
  91. 7:11gonna have a public defender now all of
  92. 7:13a sudden they're shooting for these
  93. 7:14false confessions and everything else
  94. 7:16that's what I have found whether there
  95. 7:18is stuffed document to back that up
  96. 7:22probably not but I have always found
  97. 7:25that that whenever you have lost
  98. 7:27confession to have public defenders all
  99. 7:29or no defender any all the time so when
  100. 7:33I say that the large law percent but it
  101. 7:40was a small percentage who were in fact
  102. 7:47everyone else routine before there were
  103. 8:00lawyers involved lawyers may have more
  104. 8:09experience more knowledge where we get
  105. 8:12abilities insult with fault none of
  106. 8:14agilent's purely probably for that is
  107. 8:20overworked underpaid they don't have the
  108. 8:23same resources right
  109. 8:35so the benefit of reporting is the
  110. 10:17training and training whether they dc+
  111. 10:21the record one of his own interrogations
  112. 10:25he wasn't a cop he went back and read
  113. 10:28wash and he sort of he did knowingly
  114. 10:36because
  115. 10:37we'll recorded everyone got to see what
  116. 10:41exactly what happened what happened was
  117. 10:43is that even Bert Lee he was as many
  118. 10:46facts and also those facts that is why I
  119. 10:53say recording available but even when
  120. 10:58they recorded again I go back to look at
  121. 11:00Brendan Dassey that was recorded that
  122. 11:03was I mean looking at it blindly I first
  123. 11:09time I ever saw it I thought of you
  124. 11:11honestly because I'm like this is he's
  125. 11:1416
  126. 11:15Martin was 17 I just people don't
  127. 11:19realize and I've said this over and over
  128. 11:21whether you have a high IQ from and you
  129. 11:24were spoiled rich kid or you're a scum
  130. 11:26of the lowlife when you have cops in
  131. 11:29your face yelling at you or being nice
  132. 11:32to you it's very easy to say I did it
  133. 11:35just to shut them up and you want to
  134. 11:38leave and you want to get them out I
  135. 11:39don't think people realize how easy it
  136. 11:43is to say I did it for someone not
  137. 11:45experienced in the law someone
  138. 11:48experienced it I say is really
  139. 12:43ultimately all motivations are or the
  140. 12:48ultimatums that are get it in the mail
  141. 14:21your camera a little because we're
  142. 14:23getting like your nose a perfect so I
  143. 14:29said it you just came to us I said both
  144. 14:34of the pilots balance a defines all of a
  145. 14:37sudden you're an interrogation room
  146. 14:41freedom in hours and hours and hours and
  147. 14:46essentially you get everything hold the
  148. 14:50only way you're leaving this room is
  149. 14:52tell everyone here every five six seven
  150. 14:56in other words you fart like what am I
  151. 15:01all over this behind and quite a little
  152. 15:03bit you're the Levites who believe that
  153. 15:05we need a life look at written a see
  154. 15:09what I agree and it is very
  155. 15:20understanding until you sort of water
  156. 15:23you know when you want other
  157. 15:25determinations of what an innocent son
  158. 15:33effect does that a minute right already
  159. 15:37and you get to somebody with your family
  160. 15:42members like okay you say something like
  161. 15:59that or they got my had or now with
  162. 16:08Brendan a lying
  163. 16:09totally off track from everything I
  164. 16:11wanted to ask you but speaking of
  165. 16:13Brendan into even speaking of you I
  166. 16:17understand it from Brendan's standpoint
  167. 16:19being for lack of a better way say
  168. 16:22disabled mentally challenged not it's
  169. 16:27the not respectable member of society
  170. 16:29from a bad home dysfunctional home I can
  171. 16:33see why his mom said no don't worry
  172. 16:35about you he doesn't need a lawyer you
  173. 16:37on the other hand I always wondered and
  174. 16:40always wanted to ask you why didn't
  175. 16:42anyone in your family get you a lawyer
  176. 16:44immediately why didn't your dad's lawyer
  177. 16:53father Tollman pretty degree I don't
  178. 17:03want more smoke okay
  179. 17:13every time they did in the case when
  180. 18:03they want to hide evil and in my case he
  181. 18:10was a lawyer
  182. 18:11Wow did your dad's partner ever he died
  183. 18:15right before a justice Koster was dead
  184. 18:26and the last prosecutors private
  185. 18:30convenient relevant news that so later
  186. 18:32them and Akriti is dead and creamy with
  187. 18:35that but you pursue your parents never
  188. 18:37got justice the partners still know is
  189. 18:45when the over with me that the
  190. 18:48prosecutorial powers returned back to
  191. 18:51his phone really prosecute is there's a
  192. 19:03new digital economy so we're hopeful
  193. 19:06Matthews resound we can present all the
  194. 19:11events we've gathered over the last 15
  195. 19:13to 20 years okay
  196. 19:17do you think that if that had enough
  197. 19:19happened to you you still would have
  198. 19:21been an attorney or are you thinking you
  199. 19:23would have taken a whole different path
  200. 19:25whoa
  201. 19:27what round here I wanna be to this man
  202. 19:29okay I wanted to be like Tron so no I
  203. 19:58had no tension or aspirations become a
  204. 20:00lawyer or a a law professor or you know
  205. 20:04teacher Georgetown or I I know that were
  206. 20:07living in my role okay
  207. 20:10and I will say though that Sean Piko I
  208. 20:14think was his name he also has become
  209. 20:18successful after 15 years I mean he
  210. 20:21actually did his crime but he's actually
  211. 20:23got involved not as as well as you but
  212. 20:26he also deals with um education in the
  213. 20:29system and make sure the prisoners in
  214. 20:32New York had mean that's another kid
  215. 20:34that got arrested at fifteen and really
  216. 20:36turned his life around after doing so
  217. 20:38many years in prison
  218. 20:39um it's impressive and in case you guys
  219. 20:42don't know marty is now an attorney he
  220. 20:45used seventeen years there's still one
  221. 21:08or two more stops on going through it
  222. 21:11but I am a I were in a law firm
  223. 21:15I'm professor at were law school and
  224. 21:19also a professor at Georgetown
  225. 21:21University I'm going to class that and
  226. 21:24that's where you did where I found which
  227. 21:27I did a video on him Valencia Dixon
  228. 21:31Valentino Dixon what an incredible story
  229. 21:35like I do
  230. 21:36did all video
  231. 21:37I knew when I was a student for a law
  232. 21:41school
  233. 21:42we set up an evolve in terms of the
  234. 21:45program and it was actually working for
  235. 21:48a Bruce farkhad who's a Laura luminaries
  236. 21:50and he was working on this case and you
  237. 21:54know we were there there and kind of
  238. 21:57just wasn't going anywhere but I've made
  239. 22:00a conventional scheme now and I'm hold
  240. 22:01on did he know I said that I will never
  241. 22:03give up on you and hopefully one day
  242. 22:05down the road
  243. 22:06it'll change and when in more power and
  244. 22:10I started teaching this class so I was
  245. 22:12down
  246. 22:14Valentina's one of the things we picked
  247. 22:16for the students was 80 cases and the
  248. 22:22student case I did a video on it
  249. 22:32I was shocked so as some of my
  250. 22:34subscribers bought his artwork as well
  251. 22:36through his website I was absolutely
  252. 22:38shocked at how the whole thing came
  253. 22:41about how it's just wild
  254. 22:44I mean for a murderer
  255. 22:50that another man came forward probably
  256. 22:56said because the gun okay Valentino was
  257. 23:05a man whose artists before the prison
  258. 23:07super intensive a huge rollers golf
  259. 23:10course
  260. 23:10guy never just at a firm golf course
  261. 23:14thought it was a crazy idea and also
  262. 23:18NASA said I'm on a different path we're
  263. 23:19starting to learn golf courses and you
  264. 23:23know the first golf worst he's ever
  265. 23:25remains whose fella leash you know a
  266. 23:28leash
  267. 23:30or someone who's never set foot on a
  268. 23:33golf course and the first golfers
  269. 23:35anything any of your subscribers would
  270. 23:38probably say you know penalty just
  271. 23:41probably one of the top five that are
  272. 23:44you gonna go to yeah that's just wild
  273. 23:48now another statistic that I pulled up
  274. 23:51though and you work with exonerees all
  275. 23:53the time
  276. 23:5421 there are 2120 exonerations in the US
  277. 23:58since 89 actually felt like it was more
  278. 24:00than that I'm according to national
  279. 24:02registry right so you have to understand
  280. 24:05the reason why that number is what it is
  281. 24:08what the definition is
  282. 24:10okay that's very important to understand
  283. 24:14the national registry generation is a
  284. 24:17very very strict kind of standard to get
  285. 24:20it editor to their list so you read the
  286. 24:23definition on their website you must
  287. 24:25qualify satisfy that but if you think
  288. 24:28about those numbers yeah that's really
  289. 24:31can about a year all right you but in
  290. 24:36the last two years right pick last year
  291. 24:38the year before you see how many is on
  292. 24:41arisians to the place last or the year
  293. 24:44before it's about one or two and a half
  294. 24:46days to a week three week every time it
  295. 25:00is exoneration for those damages that
  296. 25:02the guilty party have remained free
  297. 25:05coming and you different rods and victim
  298. 25:08on the news okay
  299. 25:11because one of the things that I have
  300. 25:13told subscribers for two years in
  301. 25:15multiple videos that everybody's
  302. 25:18focusing on the 5% max that are innocent
  303. 25:23in jail and I try to tell people 95% of
  304. 25:26the time we get it right
  305. 25:28it's that 5% that sucks but you can't
  306. 25:31hate an entire justice system because
  307. 25:3495% of the time they get it right it's
  308. 25:36just that 5% up to 5% but why are so
  309. 25:42many I understand New York's a big play
  310. 25:44but Suez Texas why is New York the
  311. 25:47second highest among states for false
  312. 25:49confessions I mean granted New York's
  313. 25:52big well you think about it it's
  314. 25:55probably one of the reasons why the
  315. 25:57training that goes it's the fact that we
  316. 26:01haven't had the mandatory electronic
  317. 26:04recording leaders of televisions I mean
  318. 26:06I think there was only one seam in
  319. 26:10America
  320. 26:11where was mandatory deportation in
  321. 26:14Alaska there's been introduction of
  322. 26:21electronic record generations I think or
  323. 26:28the because we're able to really watch
  324. 26:34them and understand you know what their
  325. 26:36problem is a default investor you lose
  326. 26:40weight the way law enforcement Macready
  327. 26:43in my case said he reported the reasons
  328. 26:53why they don't know if it's wrong
  329. 27:01somebody that inhibits that he what they
  330. 27:16migrate but even even when you do
  331. 27:19something wrong I go back to dasi every
  332. 27:22the whole world saw those interrogations
  333. 27:24and how the supreme not the supreme
  334. 27:27court how the 7th district
  335. 27:29appeals court you know half agreed half
  336. 27:33didn't agree one of the main reasons
  337. 27:36they didn't agree was the law that you
  338. 27:39know according to the law they did
  339. 27:40nothing wrong
  340. 27:42when is that gonna change because that
  341. 27:45needs to change because they did do
  342. 27:47stuff wrong he was a 16 year old kid you
  343. 27:49were a 17 year old kid
  344. 27:51so salty
  345. 28:00[Music]
  346. 28:19which I knew they would do you think I
  347. 29:17mean I know personally that Lauren and
  348. 29:20Steve der isn't have spent well over a
  349. 29:22million dollars in their time efforts
  350. 29:25everything try you know briefs it's not
  351. 29:28over but it kind of is over I mean it
  352. 29:31can they do anything else form or and
  353. 29:34now it's waiting on including everyone
  354. 29:48you know in normal condition he it's
  355. 29:51never okay with something they were
  356. 29:54doing
  357. 29:56there is more wood going on we're in
  358. 29:57Venice and I've known for very little
  359. 30:04for a million years ago
  360. 30:06and I can assure you in viewers and I
  361. 30:13would imagine so just because I mean
  362. 30:16it's kind of confusing because ok you
  363. 30:19get tonight from the Supreme Court
  364. 30:20you're done you know there's nowhere
  365. 30:22else to go but I'm like they have so
  366. 30:25many years invested in so many million
  367. 30:28over well over a million maybe even two
  368. 30:30million by this point invested you know
  369. 31:05if you really remember leaving in the
  370. 31:14lawyers mm-hmm
  371. 31:34but can she get through a completely
  372. 31:36corrupt County that's the problem
  373. 31:40I don't doubt her ability it's getting
  374. 31:43through the corruption of Manitowoc and
  375. 31:46what seemingly seems to be all of
  376. 31:49Wisconsin if you've heard what you know
  377. 31:56so you know
  378. 31:59humming a lawyer one better than okay
  379. 32:07mm-hmm and I think the one word or a we
  380. 32:35with the rain which he hears a lot of
  381. 32:40crap for that it's not scientific
  382. 32:44professor I'm sorry but he's got some
  383. 32:47credibility everyone
  384. 34:00okay so you in your heart you believe
  385. 34:03they're both completely innocent okay
  386. 34:39[Music]
  387. 34:44I took their words okay speaking of
  388. 34:48Kathleen Zellner real quickly a lot of
  389. 34:51feedback that she gets is she's
  390. 34:53unprofessional with her tweets and all
  391. 34:55that other stuff and supporters we
  392. 34:59always say like it doesn't matter like
  393. 35:01she's still gonna have the end result
  394. 35:03but one of the biggest things that we
  395. 35:06see as a supporter is she she has to
  396. 35:10have something up her sleeve somewhere
  397. 35:12like she's too vocal about this one did
  398. 35:16it or that one did it definitively but I
  399. 35:19feel like she's hiding the real person
  400. 35:21under her sleeve but doesn't want him to
  401. 35:24run am I totally off track or does that
  402. 35:27sound like a hotshot attorney would do
  403. 35:31that
  404. 36:27as they leave because you want to maybe
  405. 36:59okay that's kind of what I thought and
  406. 37:02I've always had that I'm wrapping up so
  407. 37:06besides getting admitted to the bar of
  408. 37:09New York State you spend 17 years in
  409. 37:12prison you are a professor of law you

  417. 39:06County still so corrupt as it was and
  418. 39:21there's still the highest-paid police
  419. 39:24force in the entire country are you
  420. 39:42bitter towards what happened I mean you
