- 0:00all right so we got this problem out at
- 0:03my property we've been building bridges
- 0:06out here with pallets and and all this
- 0:07and that and they kind of break and uh
- 0:09just erode and disintegrate basically so
- 0:13we're coming up with this idea we we
- 0:15chopped a few trees down and we're going
- 0:17to turn them into Bridges so what I want
- 0:19to show you today is how to take a tree
- 0:22that you knock down split it in half and
- 0:25basically turn it into a bridge but the
- 0:27method that I want to show you how to
- 0:29use is really cool because you can get a
- 0:30flat surface by just using wedges so if
- 0:34you take a look at this log right here
- 0:35I'm going to chainsaw off about an 8ot
- 0:38segment and come on over here real quick
- 0:40cuz I'll show you what we've done so
- 0:44far so right
- 0:46here this log about an hour ago was
- 0:50together and as you can see we split
- 0:52right through the middle now it's not
- 0:54perfect but it's doing pretty well for
- 0:57what we want it to be and and I actually
- 1:00set up one of the bridge segments
- 1:04already and I'll show you real quick now
- 1:06if you take a look down below I have
- 1:08these hunks of
- 1:09wood uh that are squared off already and
- 1:13kind of carved out a little thing on the
- 1:15chainsaw and they fit perfectly into the
- 1:18log and now we have this bridge but the
- 1:21problem is that's an 8ft segment we need
- 1:23to make it about probably about 70 ft so
- 1:25it's going to take a while check out the
- 1:27process and uh we'll see how it
- 1:31all right so the first thing we got to
- 1:32do is cut off about this 7 and 1/2 8T
- 1:35segment so let's get to
- 1:42[Music]
- 1:50[Music]
- 1:58work
- 2:02[Music]
- 2:22now we broke this off now it's time to
- 2:25split this thing right down the middle
- 2:27all right so we have this log we split
- 2:29it
- 2:30down uh with the chainsaw so now what I
- 2:33want to do is I kind of look at the end
- 2:34of this and we're trying to split it in
- 2:37half so I just turn this a little bit
- 2:39there's like a natural split right here
- 2:41that's already happening so I'm going to
- 2:43try to get my wedges in right up here
- 2:46now if I have a chainsaw sometimes I
- 2:48cheat and put a little bit uh of a
- 2:52Groove in here to get started and I
- 2:54think I'm going to do that today but you
- 2:56absolutely don't need to do that uh let
- 2:58me show you the tools that you really
- 2:59need for this number one so you want to
- 3:02get yourself a nice
- 3:04sledgehammer and I like to use at least
- 3:08two splitting wedges I like metal ones
- 3:11and then I have big Bera over here in
- 3:13case um I need to split it a little
- 3:16wider so I end up using this quite a bit
- 3:18in this process so I'm going to use the
- 3:21Chainsaw real quick to cheat but like I
- 3:23said you don't need to do that it's
- 3:24already here but I feel like that's
- 3:26going to give me a better a better
- 3:28chance at splitting it somewhat even now
- 3:30also if the log's moving like this it's
- 3:32a good idea to get a
- 3:34wedge hammered in there while you're
- 3:38working to stabilize a little bit so
- 3:40here we
- 3:43[Music]
- 3:49go it's not perfectly straight but let's
- 3:52see what happens I'm going to start off
- 3:54with this blue wedge it's a little bit
- 3:55sharper just kind of set it in
- 3:58there
- 4:00and you'll see it start to split fairly
- 4:03quickly we'll see what happens sometimes
- 4:05it doesn't work
- 4:06out just like
- 4:10life clear the
- 4:12area an old beer can from
- 4:15someone definitely wasn't
- 4:21me you can see quickly it already split
- 4:25now is this even no this side's going to
- 4:29be a little bigger but I don't really
- 4:30care about that for this purpose I'm
- 4:32just trying to split it so that I have
- 4:34two somewhat flat surfaces to help in my
- 4:37bridge building process so I'm going to
- 4:38go ahead and dig this in a little bit
- 4:41deeper as you can see it's starting to
- 4:44split all the way down so this is not
- 4:47coming out that's where your second
- 4:49wedge comes in so you can put your
- 4:52second wedge right here if you want I
- 4:54like to go down a little further give it
- 4:56a little starter hit and and then go to
- 5:03town and then eventually that blue one's
- 5:05going to get
- 5:08loose and then you take it right out and
- 5:11move it down and you just keep switching
- 5:13them out all the way
- 5:20down black one gets loose move it
- 5:26down but
- 5:28hey
- 5:30you can hear the
- 5:33crackling hear
- 5:38that nice and free
- 5:46down sometimes it doesn't want to split
- 5:48all the way
- 5:49through that's when I bring
- 5:51in Big
- 5:54Mama put in Big Mama right here send
- 5:58her
- 6:04you want to talk about
- 6:05flat look at
- 6:08this this is how I learn how to surf get
- 6:11out there and you got to stand up it
- 6:16happens you know what I'm saying nice
- 6:18flat surface nice flat
- 6:20surface uh not that hard not a whole lot
- 6:23of work now you could you could take
- 6:26these and turn them into more
- 6:28dimensional Lumber but as a nice easy
- 6:31way to get a flat surface from a piece
- 6:33of wood that's otherwise just going to
- 6:35rot out in the woods split it in a
- 6:38half and use some wedges and you could
- 6:41use uh wooden wedges absolutely so you
- 6:43could do this whole project with a
- 6:46sludgehammer and Three Wooden wedges
- 6:48that's all you would need so maybe
- 6:50you'll go out and try it maybe there's
- 6:52much better ways to do it I've seen
- 6:54other ways on the internet but this is
- 6:55simple and it's a lot of fun so
- 6:58hopefully you get out there and and give
- 6:59it a shot adios
