  2. 0:14you have a little over two more minutes
  3. 0:16to finish your do now on a blank piece
  4. 0:19of paper and your do
  5. 0:22now section of your binder you are
  6. 0:25answering the questions infer what is
  7. 0:27going on here meaning the image the
  8. 0:30picture that we're looking at the
  9. 0:32painting what do you see that makes you
  10. 0:34think that and what else do you notice
  11. 0:37you're writing that
  12. 0:43down I will give you one more minute
  13. 0:47would that
  14. 0:48work
  15. 0:49yes all right so who would like to
  16. 0:51volunteer to share what they
  17. 0:58wrote um
  18. 1:05okay so those like tamali okay Val I
  19. 1:09notic that the men are also helping that
  20. 1:13the men are also helping good I'm going
  21. 1:16to call a few more people
  22. 1:28s
  23. 1:32so it it seems like they're they're
  24. 1:34doing maybe like a lunch or breakfast
  25. 1:36because it's daylight
  26. 1:45goodiday
  27. 1:48okay so perhaps it's a holiday because a
  28. 1:51lot of the family is involved
  29. 1:54painter okay called R it is from the Ian
  30. 2:00American Museum and it was painted in
  31. 2:031990 okay and the reason why I'm showing
  32. 2:06you this is because sometimes or maybe
  33. 2:09you've heard about the term inference in
  34. 2:11other classes and you think it's just
  35. 2:13reserved for texts or research okay but
  36. 2:17you can infer on almost anything what
  37. 2:20happens if I walked in the door and I
  38. 2:22was drenched in water what would you
  39. 2:25infer that it was raining outside okay
  40. 2:28so I want write this in your notes when
  41. 2:31you use Clues okay like the ones you
  42. 2:35just mentioned right that the whole
  43. 2:37family was involved that they were
  44. 2:39making something that looks like tamales
  45. 2:42if youve never seen a tamale before
  46. 2:45would you know that that's
  47. 2:46a probably not okay but that was part of
  48. 2:50your background knowledge you use schs
  49. 2:53from image and your own background
  50. 2:55knowledge to figure out what was going
  51. 2:57on in the picture and that is an
  52. 2:59inference okay I'm moving on yes so when
  53. 3:04you're looking at inferences within text
  54. 3:07be that research text or literary text
  55. 3:10and you're drawing these conclusions
  56. 3:12this is sometimes called reading between
  57. 3:14the lines meaning that you are grasping
  58. 3:17a deeper meaning of what you are reading
  59. 3:20from the available information that you
  60. 3:23have so by the end of today's class I
  61. 3:26hope that you will be able to make an
  62. 3:28inference using evidence and background
  63. 3:31knowledge lastly you are going to apply
  64. 3:34what you've learned about inferencing to
  65. 3:36the gra the last or final part of the in
  66. 3:39of the graphic organizer you've been
  67. 3:41working on about the arrival of the
  68. 3:43Spaniards right the point of view of the
  69. 3:45Aboriginal people and the spard so why
  70. 3:49is it important to know how to infer why
  71. 3:51are we spending time in this class to
  72. 3:54learn about this and the mechanics of it
  73. 3:56talk at your tables or with your next
  74. 3:58door neighbor for a minute
  75. 4:00why you think
  76. 4:07it's let's bring our attention back so
  77. 4:10who heard something really interesting
  78. 4:12that maybe a partner or someone at your
  79. 4:14group
  80. 4:15said that you would like to share yes oh
  81. 4:18you said that in use it like every day
  82. 4:22in in your life and it can help you with
  83. 4:25arguments
  84. 4:26okay use it every day and it can help
  85. 4:28you with arguments
  86. 4:30go so like maybe like to know what's
  87. 4:34going on before you
  88. 4:36get idea okay okay so start thinking
  89. 4:40about what could be in order to
  90. 4:42understand things a little bit better
  91. 4:44good Mar I think that in this class
  92. 4:46mostly we're learning about the past and
  93. 4:49there's not much like written records
  94. 4:51about everything that has happened so
  95. 4:54maybe it's important to to inference
  96. 4:57because you can like for example what
  97. 5:00we're doing the graphic organizer we
  98. 5:02don't know exactly what they were
  99. 5:03thinking but because of the story that
  100. 5:05we've heard we can have an idea of what
  101. 5:08they're thinking so that's like
  102. 5:09inferencing we're drawing conclusions
  103. 5:12from the information that does exist the
  104. 5:14reason why it's important to know how to
  105. 5:16infert is because this is a transferable
  106. 5:18skill meaning you can use it in more
  107. 5:19than one class not just here today for
  108. 5:22the graphic organizer that you're doing
  109. 5:23p in studies okay you are using it for
  110. 5:26literary pieces in narratives in
  111. 5:30um plays in movies in
  112. 5:32pictures to grasp a deeper understanding
  113. 5:36of what you're looking at reading or
  114. 5:38watching for example did you
  115. 5:41notice that there's a last CER of
  116. 5:43painting in the wall on the
  117. 5:47wall okay so what does that tell me
  118. 5:49about this
  119. 5:52family that they're Christian good
  120. 5:57okay so those are the types of things
  121. 5:59things that you can infer from evidence
  122. 6:02and your background knowledge someone
  123. 6:05who maybe didn't know what the Last
  124. 6:07Supper looked like maybe you couldn't
  125. 6:08have drawn that inference but a lot of
  126. 6:10you did know what it was and hence you
  127. 6:12were able to infer that they were
  128. 6:14Christian or Catholic what is the
  129. 6:16difference between an inference or a
  130. 6:22guess an INF educated
  131. 6:26gu take PRI knowledge and guess
  132. 6:31okay so for example a guest could be
  133. 6:33educated you could you could make an
  134. 6:34educated guess but it's not usually
  135. 6:38evidencebased
  136. 6:41okay an inference on the other hand uses
  137. 6:44evidence to arrive at a conclusion
  138. 6:47meaning I can site remember we've been
  139. 6:49working on citations you can cite
  140. 6:52information evidence quote maybe if it's
  141. 6:54a narrative it's a novel you can cite a
  142. 6:57part of the story to support your
  143. 7:00inference right your
  144. 7:01conclusion basically you could think
  145. 7:03about it as an inference is the sum of
  146. 7:08an Evidence the information available
  147. 7:10that you can point out okay it can't
  148. 7:13just be something that you're thinking
  149. 7:15that might be true it needs to be
  150. 7:17something that you can point out and
  151. 7:19background information something that
  152. 7:20you already know and could recall for
  153. 7:22example thing you just recall what the
  154. 7:24Last Supper means right that brings you
  155. 7:27to a conclusion or an assumption that is
  156. 7:30your inference check in how clear are
  157. 7:32you on what makes up an inference thumbs
  158. 7:34up thumbs
  159. 7:38down how clear are you what
  160. 7:44makes the previous slide this
  161. 7:47one the rest of
  162. 7:51you so I want to do a little example or
  163. 7:54I'm going to model this okay I am going
  164. 7:57to think out loud so you can follow my
  165. 7:59train of thinking you will know I will
  166. 8:03ask questions out loud but I'm just
  167. 8:04asking myself okay they are not meant
  168. 8:08for you to answer them just so you can
  169. 8:10follow my train of thought
  170. 8:13okay Mary Ellen sniffed the air she
  171. 8:16smelled the scent of her best friend
  172. 8:18Bobby she jumped up excitedly and ran
  173. 8:20towards the front door she knew Bobby
  174. 8:22would arrive any minute you stop okay
  175. 8:26and she could barely contain herself her
  176. 8:28tail fter and faster finally Bobby right
  177. 8:31she jumped on him and gave him a big
  178. 8:34kiss so who is mar ell remember you need
  179. 8:38evidence
  180. 8:41okay how do I know that you need to be
  181. 8:44able to explain using your evidence so
  182. 8:47here's the evidence that you can point
  183. 8:49to sniff the air smelt the scent of her
  184. 8:53best friend waged her tail faster and
  185. 8:56faster and jumped on him so this is the
  186. 8:59evidence that I have these verbs these
  187. 9:02phrases from my background knowledge
  188. 9:04what I know about my human friends and
  189. 9:07my dog Bruno is that this behavior is
  190. 9:10more similar to what Bruno would do more
  191. 9:13so than what any of my human well maybe
  192. 9:15S no I'm joking all like it's more
  193. 9:18something like it sounds more like
  194. 9:19something Bruno would do more so than my
  195. 9:21human friends but I am concluding or
  196. 9:24from my background knowledge of what
  197. 9:26Bruno and my human friends would do I
  198. 9:29can infer that Mar Ellen is a dog and
  199. 9:33Bobby is her own how do I know because
  200. 9:36the text tells me that she did these
  201. 9:38things and those are not things that
  202. 9:40humans usually do okay those are more
  203. 9:42related to what a dog would do that's
  204. 9:44how I'm explain this part how do you
  205. 9:47know now that I've modeled that for you
  206. 9:50you are going to infirm okay we are
  207. 9:53going to get in teams six teams of
  208. 9:57four okay and then I'm going to give you
  209. 10:00some examples of text from which you're
  210. 10:04going to draw inferences from the
  211. 10:06questions that they give
  212. 10:07you okay and each team will receive
  213. 10:11inference and worksheets you are not
  214. 10:13allowed to open them until I tell you to
  215. 10:16and then students will work as a team to
  216. 10:18complete all of the the worksheet
  217. 10:20filling in the answers so you're not
  218. 10:21just answering who Mar in is for example
  219. 10:24just the answer you're explaining why so
  220. 10:26you need to give your evidence and your
  221. 10:28back knowledge right Bruno yes all right
  222. 10:32when you're done all members of the
  223. 10:33group Must Stand Up and Dance the jiggle
  224. 10:36jiggle to show the 1 team has completed
  225. 10:38the worksheet remember it I don't
  226. 10:40remember anything okay do you know the
  227. 10:41flaws this
  228. 10:42one that one we all
  229. 10:45know by the way I had that originally
  230. 10:48the FL but then I was like that was like
  231. 10:50updated they'll probably know this one
  232. 10:52better but no the the floss we can all
  233. 10:56do the floss when the group is done that
  234. 10:58will be the winning group and they will
  235. 11:00get chocolate's next class all right so
  236. 11:02don't look at them just yet team of
  237. 11:09four are we ready get set
  238. 11:16infer you need to explain why meaning F
  239. 11:20your evidence and your background
  240. 11:22knowledge that helps you arrive at that
  241. 11:27conclusion
  242. 11:32[Music]
  243. 11:48[Music]
  244. 11:57no
  245. 12:00you
  246. 12:07[Music]
  247. 12:21[Music]
  248. 12:26need remember you're sling your and how
  249. 12:29do you know
  250. 12:32that you all have
  251. 12:42explanations the
  252. 12:44[Applause]
  253. 12:48whole when you're all done you do the
  254. 12:57Dan the whole to do the
  255. 13:00[Music]
  256. 13:03dance you all have to do the dance there
  257. 13:06we go all right okay we have a
  258. 13:10winner
  259. 13:12great okay so good job team we are I'm
  260. 13:16giving you a few more minutes so
  261. 13:18everyone can finish remember you are
  262. 13:20signing your evidence and how you know
  263. 13:22that like I did with the mar Ellen
  264. 13:25example are we all
  265. 13:27done
  266. 13:29yes okay please return to your
  267. 13:33seats so I'm going to have one
  268. 13:36representative come up to the front and
  269. 13:39present the one of your entrances the
  270. 13:42best one okay you can come from the
  271. 13:44winning team the sunshine filtered
  272. 13:47gently through the pine needles and Cool
  273. 13:49Breeze GL through the branches iy
  274. 13:51continued walking her feet crunching
  275. 13:53over pine cones pine needles and dry
  276. 13:56leaves as they made their way as she
  277. 13:58made her way along the narrow Dusty
  278. 14:00track okay so what is the question where
  279. 14:03is iy how do you know okay explain that
  280. 14:06to us iy I think that I is in a forest I
  281. 14:10know this because they give us clues in
  282. 14:12a paragraph like dirt Trail and Chip
  283. 14:16which you would pretty much only see in
  284. 14:17the place good okay excellent um one
  285. 14:21more part sorry who's
  286. 14:24next okay it was when col heard the
  287. 14:28sound of are C that was his signal that
  288. 14:30it was time to get up he quickly dressed
  289. 14:33on his way out the door he pulled on a
  290. 14:35pair of money boots outside the SL of
  291. 14:37sweet hay fill air he whistled at his
  292. 14:40sprinkled handfuls of grein and corn
  293. 14:42across the ground then he grabbed an
  294. 14:44empty bucket and smelted himself as he
  295. 14:46thought about the fresh milk that would
  296. 14:47soon fill
  297. 14:48it so what's the question where does K
  298. 14:52live and he lives in a farm because of
  299. 14:53the rooster the muddy boots he has the
  300. 14:56milk he's going to get with the bucket
  301. 14:58and the sweet Hast not and the PN well
  302. 15:01those are your evidences from the text
  303. 15:03okay what's your back arm
  304. 15:06information um what do you know like
  305. 15:09that's your own knowledge of things that
  306. 15:11you would find in a farm more so than
  307. 15:13maybe in the city or you would you
  308. 15:15wouldn't find like sweet hay in the city
  309. 15:18and a rooster probably wouldn't be
  310. 15:22you okay good job every round of
  311. 15:25[Applause]
  312. 15:27applause good job all right can I throw
  313. 15:30it away uh you can recycle it can I
  314. 15:33recycle it yes recycle but not I don't
  315. 15:35want everyone to recyc at the same time
  316. 15:37keep them and then you
  317. 15:39can
  318. 15:47at seats okay so I want you to think
  319. 15:50about these two questions we've
  320. 15:54practiced
  321. 15:57inferencing I you think of the following
  322. 15:59questions okay and answer them in your
  323. 16:01notebooks right now okay I'm going to
  324. 16:03give you 2 minutes and a half to answer
  325. 16:06these in your notebook how can we make
  326. 16:08instances in different subject areas or
  327. 16:11might how might things be useful in your
  328. 16:13different classes in other in other
  329. 16:16courses that
  330. 16:21you all right
  331. 16:24so I want you now to discuss at your
  332. 16:27tables okay either one of the two
  333. 16:30questions we're going to share our ideas
  334. 16:32after okay discuss at your tables we
  335. 16:35have 1 minute go
  336. 16:38[Music]
  337. 16:56discuss okay
  338. 17:00so questions how can we make inferences
  339. 17:03in different subject areas or how might
  340. 17:05they be useful in other courses or
  341. 17:08classes
  342. 17:10Ryan what you can answer any of the two
  343. 17:14questions that you just discussed me I
  344. 17:16would like to answer the second one okay
  345. 17:18and I
  346. 17:19say how might the they be useful in your
  347. 17:22other classes and they can be useful by
  348. 17:25allowing us to have an idea of what we
  349. 17:27are learning what relates to what we're
  350. 17:29learn
  351. 17:33okay
  352. 17:35Mar okay so also answering the second
  353. 17:37question we can make instances in
  354. 17:40different subjects areas and depending
  355. 17:42on the class you can assume more about
  356. 17:44the topic and putting into your basic
  357. 17:46common sense that can help you um
  358. 17:49advance in certain areas and make this
  359. 17:51topic much easier for to learn about and
  360. 17:53as Ryan said you can relate different
  361. 17:55topics to what you're learning to come
  362. 17:57to come up with like a bigger and deer
  363. 17:59confusion you can bring information that
  364. 18:01becomes background knowledge from your
  365. 18:03other classes into an inference in
  366. 18:05another
  367. 18:06class okay to make an inference I just
  368. 18:10want to question you when where you use
  369. 18:13the word assumption okay so an
  370. 18:15assumption is different right an
  371. 18:17assumption is when you assume something
  372. 18:20you arrive at a conclusion without much
  373. 18:22evidence or without much of an educate
  374. 18:24making an educated guess right when
  375. 18:27you're assuming something about someone
  376. 18:28maybe or something without knowing this
  377. 18:30is the opposite you know something or
  378. 18:33you have information that allows you to
  379. 18:35go into a deeper understanding so for
  380. 18:38example let's say Finn learned about the
  381. 18:40Last Supper in art history okay that
  382. 18:45knowledge became background knowledge
  383. 18:47that when he saw this picture from a
  384. 18:49Mexican
  385. 18:50artist okay or from if it have been from
  386. 18:53artist from any part of the world and
  387. 18:55there's the Last Supper on the wall he
  388. 18:57knows that this is Christian okay it's a
  389. 19:02religious painting so most likely this
  390. 19:07family F that is is Catholic or
  391. 19:11Christian right they believe in
  392. 19:13Christ
  393. 19:18Sophie oh right yes we two
  394. 19:22sophies question a little bit Lou I'm
  395. 19:25going to answer the second question I
  396. 19:28can Like Us in English because
  397. 19:37books good I'm glad you mentioned that
  398. 19:39Sophie so she mentioned that you could
  399. 19:41use it in English to get a deeper
  400. 19:44understanding of the story and what's
  401. 19:45going on or maybe even understand the
  402. 19:47characters better excellent we're going
  403. 19:49to watch a short picture clip has anyone
  404. 19:51seen it before
  405. 19:53lifted no okay so we're going to watch
  406. 19:56it and as we do you're not just going to
  407. 19:58watch it
  408. 19:59passively you are going to write down
  409. 20:02one inference from what you see about
  410. 20:04the plock okay in your
  411. 20:07notes so remember you need to list one
  412. 20:11piece of evidence that you can point to
  413. 20:13okay that is real and tangible so maybe
  414. 20:16a scene something a character did
  415. 20:19evidence and your background knowledge
  416. 20:21who arrive at that entrance are we
  417. 20:25clear jul what are we doing
  418. 20:30watch that we
  419. 20:32see okay you don't have to take just
  420. 20:34notes in general you're just writing
  421. 20:36down one inference that you can arrive
  422. 20:39at and you were citing or writing
  423. 20:42down the evidence that the background
  424. 20:44information what are you making an
  425. 20:46inference
  426. 20:47about the plot the plot in the story
  427. 20:50line so you should written or I'm going
  428. 20:53to give you a little bit more time to
  429. 20:56write down the inference that you made
  430. 20:58one inference but there was a lot going
  431. 21:00on okay so just one
  432. 21:03inference right I see you're done what
  433. 21:05did you
  434. 21:11write
  435. 21:16okay
  436. 21:19okay and how do you know that what is
  437. 21:21the the the your background knowledge so
  438. 21:25like when you get the driver Li they
  439. 21:28always like do something next you
  440. 21:33[Music]
  441. 21:34super so you iner that he's taking some
  442. 21:37sort of test and the bigger one was
  443. 21:39assessing him how did he
  444. 21:42do not so great okay let's do a little
  445. 21:46review discussion of what we've learned
  446. 21:48I'm turning on the
  447. 21:50lights R away hi you're going to be the
  448. 21:53first one why don't
  449. 21:56authors this quick movie short clip that
  450. 21:59we watched did it have any voice any
  451. 22:01text any words no but did you understand
  452. 22:04what was going on because there was
  453. 22:06there were many clues in there so why do
  454. 22:09authors just say exactly what they mean
  455. 22:12why are some things meant for us to read
  456. 22:14between the
  457. 22:16lines
  458. 22:18make to make us think yeah it's more fun
  459. 22:21to just like if they tell you everything
  460. 22:23like uh he's thinking about blah blah
  461. 22:27blah and
  462. 22:29it's just weird like you just say like
  463. 22:31in the movie like yeah he's going to die
  464. 22:33that's not that's like why should you
  465. 22:36like see it if you know what's going to
  466. 22:38happen Okay so we missed the story
  467. 22:41part okay because they're trying to make
  468. 22:44you um think of what how what you think
  469. 22:48happened compared to other people
  470. 22:50because other people can think different
  471. 22:52okay so cross different
  472. 22:55perspectives and also is it the best
  473. 22:57writing showing rather than telling we
  474. 23:00know that
  475. 23:03right how do inferences help us
  476. 23:06understand the story I think we've sort
  477. 23:07of talked about this with this
  478. 23:10example okay so if Doo hadn't make the
  479. 23:13inference that the alien the smaller
  480. 23:15alien was
  481. 23:17probably getting tested but he would he
  482. 23:21have understood the plot
  483. 23:23line no not really right so they really
  484. 23:27help us to know what's going on and
  485. 23:29perhaps
  486. 23:31why why do we need to site evidence when
  487. 23:34we make an
  488. 23:36inance talk to your next door partner
  489. 23:38discuss go why do we need to sight
  490. 23:49evidence good so I heard from your
  491. 23:53conversations that unless we use
  492. 23:56evidence
  493. 23:58a guess it's no longer an inference if
  494. 24:01it doesn't have evidence that you can
  495. 24:03point to or site okay it turns into
  496. 24:06perhaps an assumption or an educated or
  497. 24:09not guess right so in order to be an
  498. 24:12inference it needs to have evidence last
  499. 24:14one this one's a
  500. 24:16little more Nuance can we make and I
  501. 24:20want to know your opinion can we make an
  502. 24:22inference if we don't have background
  503. 24:24knowledge about the
  504. 24:26topic yes yes why because if you are
  505. 24:30reading if you have never if you have
  506. 24:33never celebrated your birthday but I'm
  507. 24:36talking
  508. 24:38about oh the example that you did for
  509. 24:41the game if you never celebrate your
  510. 24:44birthday but you read this and you say
  511. 24:47like yeah I'm turning 11 years old and I
  512. 24:50have a cake and bl
  513. 24:53BL you
  514. 24:55know so maybe it might make it a little
  515. 24:58bit harder um relating to what do said
  516. 25:02about his example of the driver's test
  517. 25:04for example like we haven't taken a
  518. 25:06driver's license test yet so we don't
  519. 25:07know exactly what it is like but like
  520. 25:10when our when our parents drive and like
  521. 25:11they tell us their stories of when they
  522. 25:13took their license test seen it in a
  523. 25:15movie exactly if we seen it in movies or
  524. 25:18like even some older friends drive and
  525. 25:21you you have not been through that but
  526. 25:23you know how other people have been
  527. 25:25through it so maybe you might have
  528. 25:27backround knowledge even if it's not
  529. 25:30from a firsthand source that you've
  530. 25:32experienced it directly so for example
  531. 25:34if I didn't have a dog it might have
  532. 25:36taken me a little bit longer to infer
  533. 25:38that Mary was a dog or maybe if I've
  534. 25:40never seen a dog or I've never had a dog
  535. 25:43right maybe it might take me a little
  536. 25:45bit more time so going back to our
  537. 25:49first why is it important to know how to
  538. 25:52refer I want you to write it on your
  539. 25:54nobbl sorry in your binders okay why is
  540. 25:57it important to know how to iner you are
  541. 25:59writing your answer in your sheet that I
  542. 26:02will be collecting at the end of the
  543. 26:03class
  544. 26:05okay all right so as you finish writing
  545. 26:08that
  546. 26:09okay it's your turn to infer now on what
  547. 26:13we've been learning in terms of the
  548. 26:15arrival of the Spaniards and their
  549. 26:17encounter with the Aboriginal groups
  550. 26:20that were already here in pan okay
  551. 26:22you've learned about those Aboriginal
  552. 26:25populations and their ways of living
  553. 26:27you've learned about the Spanish and
  554. 26:28their motivations to come to the isas or
  555. 26:30to the
  556. 26:32Americans you are today I'm giving you
  557. 26:35with lons of class to
  558. 26:38finish okay
  559. 26:42the Spanish point of view and abigal
  560. 26:45point of view part of geographic
  561. 26:46organizer okay you have this part
  562. 26:51left and you are going to be thinking
  563. 26:54about the spaniard's actions right from
  564. 26:57both points of view and options from
  565. 27:00both points of view and you are drawing
  566. 27:03instances using your research as
  567. 27:06evidence remember things that you can
  568. 27:07point
  569. 27:09out questions comments concerns get my
  570. 27:14yes anyone else questions comments
  571. 27:18concerns open
  572. 27:23good
  573. 27:26when
  574. 27:32you get to
  575. 27:46worke
