- 0:00Lukeapter 9:1. [music]
- 0:02And he called the 12 together and gave
- 0:04them power and authority over all the
- 0:06demons and to heal diseases.
- 0:10And he sent [music] them out to proclaim
- 0:12the kingdom of God and to perform
- 0:14healing.
- 0:16And he said to them, "Take nothing for
- 0:17your journey, neither a staff, nor a
- 0:19bag, nor bread, nor money, and do not
- 0:22even have two tunics a piece.
- 0:25Whatever house you enter, stay there
- 0:27until you [music] leave that city.
- 0:30And as for those who do not receive you,
- 0:32as you go [music] out from the city,
- 0:35shake the dust off your feet as a
- 0:37testimony against them.
- 0:39Departing, they [music] began going
- 0:41throughout the villages preaching the
- 0:43gospel and healing everywhere. [music]
- 0:46Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that
- 0:49was happening, [music] and he was
- 0:51greatly perplexed
- 0:53because it was said by some that John
- 0:56had [music] risen from the dead.
- 0:59and by some that Elijah had appeared and
- 1:02by others [music] that one of the
- 1:04prophets of old had risen again.
- 1:07Herod said, "I myself had John beheaded,
- 1:11but who is this man about whom I hear
- 1:14such things?"
- 1:16And he kept trying to see him.
- 1:20When the apostles returned, they gave an
- 1:22account to him, Jesus, of all that they
- 1:25had done.
- 1:27Taking them with him, he withdrew
- 1:29[music] by himself to a city called
- 1:32Bethida.
- 1:34But the crowds were aware of this
- 1:36[music] and followed him. And welcoming
- 1:39them, he began speaking to them about
- 1:41the kingdom of God and [music] curing
- 1:44those who had need of healing. So, this
- 1:47describes the authority and power he
- 1:48gave the disciples and how the twel
- 1:51apostles started [music] ministering of
- 1:52the kingdom of God. And then it's got
- 1:55this little account, this very condensed
- 1:57story that when the disciples get back
- 2:00from this intensive season of ministry,
- 2:02Jesus plans a break. He takes them aside
- 2:06and he withdrew by himself with them to
- 2:09a city called Bethida. Hey, let's go
- 2:12have some rest. It says, "But the crowds
- 2:15were aware of this and they followed
- 2:17him." So they came and interrupted the
- 2:20[music] rest.
- 2:22Now the day was ending, and the twel
- 2:25came and said to him, "Send the crowd
- 2:27away that they may go into the
- 2:29surrounding villages and countryside and
- 2:32[music] find lodging and get something
- 2:34to eat. For here we are in a desolate
- 2:38place."
- 2:39But he said to them, "You give them
- 2:42something to eat." And they said, "We
- 2:46have no more than five loaves and two
- 2:48fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food
- 2:50for all these people."
- 2:52For there were about 5,000 men. And he
- 2:56said to the disciples, "Have them sit
- 2:58down to eat in groups of about 50 each."
- 3:02They did so and had them all sit down.
- 3:06Then he took the five loaves and two
- 3:08fish and looking up to heaven, he
- 3:10blessed them and broke them and kept
- 3:13giving them to the disciples to set
- 3:15before the people.
- 3:17And they all ate and were satisfied. And
- 3:20the broken pieces which they had left
- 3:23over were picked up 12 baskets full.
- 3:28So, in this story of the 5000,
- 3:31this is following on the heels of him
- 3:35commissioning the disciples to start
- 3:37ministering the message. He's helping
- 3:40them to become ministers. He's sent them
- 3:43out. They've started, but he doesn't
- 3:46believe that they are operating in
- 3:48enough faith. And so he's intentionally
- 3:52telling them to do things that are not
- 3:54possible in the strength of human flesh
- 3:56alone. He tells them to feed the people.
- 3:59Jesus isn't dumb. He's not unaware of
- 4:02the limitations.
- 4:04He just believes that the disciples can
- 4:06operate in more power than they are
- 4:09actually functioning in.
- 4:11They don't. And so they pick up 12
- 4:14baskets of leftovers, one for each of
- 4:17the disciples to remember their
- 4:19faithlessness and how much God did above
- 4:21and beyond what was needed. And it
- 4:25happened that while he was praying
- 4:26alone, the disciples were with him. And
- 4:28he questioned them, saying, "Who do the
- 4:30people say that I am?" They answered,
- 4:32"John the Baptist." Others say Elijah,
- 4:34but others one of the prophets of old.
- 4:37Who has arisen again? So this seems to
- 4:39be a very strong question that is
- 4:42occurring over and over. In the previous
- 4:44chapter, he coned the wind and waves and
- 4:46the disciples said, "Who is this?" Then
- 4:49in the beginning of this chapter, Herod
- 4:51hears what's going on and says, "Who is
- 4:54this man?" And now down here, he asks
- 4:58them, "Who do the people say that I am?"
- 5:01So that's what we're going to learn from
- 5:03this se this section of Luke's account.
- 5:06We're going to learn who Jesus is. What
- 5:09is his unique power, calling, nature?
- 5:13And he said to them, "But who do you say
- 5:15that I am?" And Peter answered and said,
- 5:19"The Messiah of God,
- 5:21the Christ of God,"
- 5:24which means the anointed one of God, the
- 5:27one who has a singular power and
- 5:30anointing from God.
- 5:32But he warned them and instructed them
- 5:35not to tell this to anyone, saying, "The
- 5:38Son of Man must suffer many things and
- 5:42be rejected by the elders and chief
- 5:44priests and scribes and be killed and be
- 5:47raised up on the third day."
- 5:50And he was saying to them all, "If
- 5:52anyone wishes to come after me, he must
- 5:55deny himself and take up his cross and
- 5:59daily follow me.
- 6:02For whoever wishes to save his life will
- 6:05lose it, but whoever loses his life for
- 6:08my sake, he is the one who will save it.
- 6:12For what is a man profited if he gains
- 6:15the whole world and loses or forfeits
- 6:17himself? For whoever is ashamed of me
- 6:21and my words, the son of man will be
- 6:23ashamed of him when he comes in his
- 6:25glory and the glory of the father and of
- 6:28the holy angels. But I say to you
- 6:30truthfully, there are some of those
- 6:32standing here who will not taste death
- 6:35until they see the kingdom of God.
- 6:38So Jesus tells them as soon as they
- 6:42confess that he is the Christ, he says,
- 6:44"I'm going to die. I'm going to be
- 6:46betrayed. It's going to be terrible, but
- 6:49I'm going to rise on the third day." So
- 6:52this is answering the question, who are
- 6:53you? And he's saying, "Yes, I am the
- 6:55Messiah, but I'm not the conquering hero
- 6:58that you're expecting. I'm a suffering
- 7:01servant who's going to give my life."
- 7:04And then he he starts trying to adjust
- 7:06their expectations and he points the the
- 7:09finger at them and he says, "If anyone
- 7:12wishes to come after me, he must deny
- 7:16himself, take up his cross, and follow
- 7:19me."
- 7:21What does it mean to deny yourself?
- 7:25Does that mean that you pretend that you
- 7:27don't have a fallen
- 7:30sinful nature? You deny it. I don't have
- 7:33a sinful nature. Is that denying
- 7:35yourself? No. What does it mean to deny
- 7:38yourself? And how is that like carrying
- 7:41a cross?
- 7:43You see, in the days when Jesus said
- 7:45this, crosses were not unusual.
- 7:49They were just like the gallows about a
- 7:53hundred years ago.
- 7:55That's where people died. They were hung
- 7:58until dead on crosses.
- 8:01So there were whole stretches of Judea
- 8:03where there were crosses lining the road
- 8:06where the Romans would nail people's
- 8:08bodies to these beams and cross beams
- 8:12and hoist them up.
- 8:15They wanted to torture the people in the
- 8:17worst possible way they could invent.
- 8:20And they wanted to terrify the living
- 8:23and say, "This is what it looks like to
- 8:25rebel against Rome." And in order to get
- 8:29there, the Romans would traditionally
- 8:31have the people drag their own cross
- 8:35under beating and stabbing. Drag their
- 8:38own cross to the place where it would be
- 8:40sunken to the ground. And then they
- 8:43would lay it down and nail the person to
- 8:45that cross.
- 8:47And the whole point was to say to the
- 8:49world, this is what it looks like to
- 8:51rebel against Rome. But Jesus is saying,
- 8:55you've got to carry your own cross,
- 8:59not to rebel against Rome, but to rebel
- 9:02against your sinful nature. This is what
- 9:05it looks like to rebel against the
- 9:08fallen nature inside of all of us.
- 9:12To deny here the word to deny means to
- 9:16disown, to disallow, to disavow,
- 9:20to reject, to suppress.
- 9:25And he's saying, if you're going to be
- 9:27an effective follower of me, you're
- 9:30going to have to live a life that
- 9:32includes a lot of death. And it's not
- 9:35going to be the death of my purpose.
- 9:37It's not going to be the death of your
- 9:38soul. It's going to be the death of your
- 9:41will that is in conflict with God's
- 9:43will. Because the kingdom that I'm
- 9:45coming to bring, it can coexist with
- 9:49Rome, but it cannot coexist with your
- 9:52ego and pride. At least not in your
- 9:55personal life. It's either going to be
- 9:57you who's reigning supreme or it's going
- 10:00to be God. But there's going to have to
- 10:02be a cross. And the rebel is going to
- 10:05have to be nailed there. For whoever
- 10:07wishes to save his life will lose it.
- 10:11He's saying the very instinct of
- 10:14self-preservation and the fear of death
- 10:17that drives the whole world and that is
- 10:20the mechanism that the enemy uses to
- 10:23hold people in bondage. Wishing to save
- 10:26your life, that's how you lose it.
- 10:30Self-preservation is how you lose your
- 10:33soul. If you can't overcome
- 10:36that fear,
- 10:38that fear of the death of your image,
- 10:41the death of your ambitions, the death
- 10:45of your body, if you can't overcome
- 10:47that, you are controlled by that. So,
- 10:50whoever whoever wishes to save his life
- 10:54will lose it. But whoever loses his life
- 10:59for my sake is the one who will save it.
- 11:04The only way to secure an enduring life
- 11:07is to stop trying to secure it yourself
- 11:12and to put it in God's hands. To let go
- 11:15and to say, "I am here
- 11:18to serve, to love, and yes, to hurt, and
- 11:23to die for something greater." and in
- 11:26doing that I will enter into a life that
- 11:28cannot be stolen from me.
- 11:34Then he tells us one of the ways that
- 11:37we're going to suffer. He says, "Whoever
- 11:39is ashamed of me and my words, the son
- 11:43of man will be ashamed of him."
- 11:47So this is one of the things we've got
- 11:48to die to is the embarrassment of
- 11:51belonging to him.
- 11:54When you have found
- 11:56a counterfeit gospel, it will not
- 11:59embarrass you. But when you have found
- 12:01Jesus, he is an embarrassment to your
- 12:04flesh. And if you don't die to that
- 12:07embarrassment, he's going to be
- 12:09embarrassed of you. You've got to own
- 12:12the foolishness of the cross. You got to
- 12:14accept the death to your pride and
- 12:17image. You got to stand outside the
- 12:20crowd. You got to be willing to
- 12:22figuratively be nailed naked for the
- 12:24crowd to walk by and mock you.
- 12:29Some 8 days after these sayings, he took
- 12:33along Peter and John and James. See how
- 12:35Luke puts in the detail of 8 days. None
- 12:37of the other gospels told us that, but
- 12:39it's interesting, isn't it?
- 12:42Some 8 days after these sayings, he took
- 12:44along Peter and John and James and went
- 12:47up on the mountain to pray.
- 12:49And while he was praying, the appearance
- 12:52of his face became different,
- 12:56and his clothing became white and
- 13:00gleaming.
- 13:02And behold, two men were talking with
- 13:04him. And they were Moses and Elijah,
- 13:08who appearing in glory were speaking of
- 13:11his departure, which he was about to
- 13:14accomplish at Jerusalem.
- 13:17Now Peter and his companions had been
- 13:20overcome with sleep. But when they were
- 13:23fully awake, they saw his glory and the
- 13:27two men standing with him.
- 13:30And as they were leaving him, Peter said
- 13:32to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to
- 13:36be here. Let us make three tabernacles,
- 13:38one for you and one for Moses and one
- 13:41for Elijah." Not realizing what he was
- 13:45saying.
- 13:47While he was saying this, a cloud formed
- 13:49and began to overshadow them, and they
- 13:51were afraid as they entered the cloud.
- 13:54Then a voice came out of the cloud,
- 13:56saying, "This is my son, my chosen one.
- 14:00Listen to him."
- 14:03And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was
- 14:05found alone, and they kept silent and
- 14:08reported to no one in those days any of
- 14:11the things which they had seen. The
- 14:14previous verses have been asking who is
- 14:16Jesus? We get a decisive answer from
- 14:19Peter. He is the Messiah.
- 14:22Okay? And then we get a redefinition of
- 14:24what Messiah is. It's a suffering
- 14:27servant who's going to die. And then we
- 14:29get a warning that his followers are
- 14:32going to have to walk in the same path
- 14:34of self-denial and sacrifice.
- 14:37Okay? And then
- 14:40we get a visitation from heaven
- 14:43where
- 14:44Moses and Elijah
- 14:47are talking to Jesus about his
- 14:50departure.
- 14:52One gospel uses the word his Exodus in
- 14:56Greek.
- 14:58So the two guys who were famous for
- 15:00Exodus come and talk to Jesus about his
- 15:03Exodus
- 15:06and
- 15:07Moses led the children of Israel on an
- 15:10exodus through the Red Sea and Elijah
- 15:13was taken up into glory on an exodus
- 15:17into heaven. So these men who are who
- 15:20are men of repentance, men of leadership
- 15:23and types of Jesus in a certain sense,
- 15:26they come and speak to Jesus on the
- 15:28mountain. And the disciples see his
- 15:31glory. He is gleaming. He is radiating
- 15:35light. And they're amazed. Peter doesn't
- 15:38know what to say. He offers to build
- 15:40three boxes because that's what humans
- 15:42do when they encounter something that
- 15:44doesn't fit their boxes. They offer to
- 15:46build bigger ones.
- 15:48And uh the Lord completely ignores it.
- 15:50And the gospel says that he said this
- 15:52because he didn't know what he was
- 15:53saying. As they're coming down, we get
- 15:56the definitive answer to the question
- 15:58that the chapter has been asking. The
- 16:01question is, who is this man? And here's
- 16:04the voice. First, it came from Peter.
- 16:07Then it's a visitation from
- 16:10men of old. And then it says, "This is
- 16:13my son." The father is speaking. This is
- 16:16my son, my chosen one or my Messiah.
- 16:20It's what that refers to. Listen to him.
- 16:24But they didn't tell anybody about this.
- 16:26It was too scary. It was too awesome.
- 16:30On the next day, when they came down
- 16:32from the mountain, a large crowd met
- 16:34him. And a man from the crowd shouted,
- 16:37saying, "Teacher, I beg you to look at
- 16:40my son, for he is my only boy."
- 16:44and a spirit seizes him and he suddenly
- 16:47screams and it throws him into a
- 16:49convulsion with foaming at the mouth and
- 16:52only with difficulty does it leave him
- 16:55mauling him as it leaves. I begged your
- 16:58disciples to cast it out and they could
- 17:00not. And Jesus answered and said, "You
- 17:04unbelieving and perverted generation,
- 17:07[clears throat]
- 17:08how long shall I be with you and put up
- 17:10with you? bring your son here.
- 17:15He's not happy that the disciples could
- 17:18not move in the faith and the power that
- 17:20he had given them.
- 17:23So, he sent them out with the power to
- 17:25heal.
- 17:26And he performed the miracle of the 5000
- 17:29to help their smallness of faith. But
- 17:31he's still seeing it everywhere.
- 17:34They are trying to get out of the
- 17:36framework of the revolution that they
- 17:38came for and trying to get into the
- 17:40framework of moving in the power of the
- 17:42spirit that he came for.
- 17:46While he was still approaching, the
- 17:48demons slammed the boy to the ground and
- 17:50threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus
- 17:53rebuked the unclean spirit and healed
- 17:55the boy and gave him back to his father.
- 17:58And they were all amazed at the
- 18:00greatness of God. But while everyone was
- 18:03marveling at all he was doing, he said
- 18:05to his disciples, "Let these words sink
- 18:10into your ears,
- 18:12for the Son of Man is going to be
- 18:15delivered into the hands of men."
- 18:20So, he's working miracles.
- 18:22He's stopping the sea.
- 18:25He's feeding the 5000.
- 18:28He's casting out demons.
- 18:31He's doing incredible things. He's
- 18:33raising the dead,
- 18:36but they aren't listening. That part of
- 18:39his plan is to allow himself to be
- 18:42delivered into the hands of men.
- 18:46He's showing so much power that they're
- 18:48thinking, well, nobody can touch him.
- 18:52And he knows that when when he is
- 18:55delivered into the hands of men, it's
- 18:56going to cause his disciples to lose
- 18:58their faith
- 19:00to say, "I thought he was powerful." But
- 19:03he is powerful. So he tells them, "Let
- 19:06these words sink into your ears, for the
- 19:11Son of Man is going to be delivered into
- 19:14the hands of men."
- 19:17But they did not understand this
- 19:20statement.
- 19:22and it was concealed from them so that
- 19:25they would not perceive it and they were
- 19:28afraid to ask him about this statement.
- 19:31We have been seeing that Jesus is not
- 19:34the heroic conquering warrior Messiah
- 19:37that he is the
- 19:39servant of the power of God of his
- 19:42spirit. Okay? And then we've been seeing
- 19:45him perform miracles. And we've seen
- 19:48that the man's boy who was
- 19:52demonpossessed has been delivered. And
- 19:54what did they say
- 19:56when the boy was delivered? The crowd
- 19:59said that they were amazed
- 20:02at the greatness of God. But the
- 20:06greatness of God includes a cross. And
- 20:09the greatness of God includes being
- 20:12delivered into the hands of men. And the
- 20:14greatness of God isn't just glory and
- 20:18power. It's brokenness and humility.
- 20:21Okay. So now the disciples are going to
- 20:24give us another glimpse of how they
- 20:26don't understand this greatness.
- 20:28An argument started among them as to
- 20:31which of them might be the greatest.
- 20:34But Jesus, knowing what they were
- 20:36thinking in their heart, took a child
- 20:38and stood him by his side. And he said
- 20:42to them, "Whoever receives this child in
- 20:46my name receives me,
- 20:49and whoever receives me receives him who
- 20:51sent me, for the one who is least among
- 20:54all of you, this is the one who is
- 20:57great."
- 20:58So he's basically telling them, you want
- 21:00to be great, you're going to have to
- 21:03become like this child. Because when
- 21:05people receive someone who is as humble
- 21:08as this child, that's when they're going
- 21:10to be receiving me.
- 21:13So if you want them to receive me, you
- 21:15better be like this kid." John answered
- 21:18and said, "Master, we saw someone
- 21:20casting out demons in your name, and we
- 21:22tried to prevent him because he does not
- 21:24follow along with us." So now they're
- 21:27saying, "We want to make even the
- 21:29miracle working an expression of human
- 21:32pride. Could we could we limit it so
- 21:34that it's only our thing?
- 21:38We understand that you're not going to
- 21:40bring swords and clubs against Rome and
- 21:43you're not going to be that kind of
- 21:44Messiah, but since it's a supernatural
- 21:47miracle kind of Messiah, could we at
- 21:48least make it only our thing?"
- 21:53Jesus said to him,"Do not hinder him,
- 21:56for he who is not against you is for
- 21:59you.
- 22:01Don't think like that. Let's network.
- 22:04Let's work with other people."
- 22:07When the days were approaching for his
- 22:09ascension, he was determined to go to
- 22:11Jerusalem. Now, notice it doesn't say
- 22:15when the days were approaching for his
- 22:18death.
- 22:20The Bible will later tell us that
- 22:24he endured the cross for the joy set
- 22:28before him. He wasn't going to Jerusalem
- 22:31just to die. He was going to Jerusalem
- 22:34to rise, to ascend into heaven.
- 22:38So Jerusalem and the cross, that was the
- 22:42dark tunnel and aisle through which he
- 22:45had to pass in order to get to his
- 22:47ascension. But he was going for the
- 22:49ascension.
- 22:51When the days were approaching for his
- 22:52ascension, he was determined to go to
- 22:55Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on
- 22:57ahead of him. And they went and entered
- 22:59a village of the Samaritans to make
- 23:02arrangements for him.
- 23:04But they did not receive him because he
- 23:06was traveling toward Jerusalem.
- 23:09Why did the Samaritans not receive him?
- 23:12Because he was traveling toward
- 23:14Jerusalem.
- 23:16Why? Why would they not want that? Well,
- 23:19see,
- 23:21back in the days
- 23:23of the kingdom, Israel had been split
- 23:26into a northern kingdom and a southern
- 23:28kingdom into Judah and Samaria.
- 23:33Okay? And in the days of Jeroboam, the
- 23:38wicked king who caused Israel to sin, he
- 23:42taught the people that they didn't have
- 23:43to go to Jerusalem. that that was
- 23:46inconvenient for them so they didn't
- 23:48have to go all the way to Jerusalem.
- 23:49That they could stay in Samaria and
- 23:52offer their sacrifices in disobedience
- 23:55to God's command that they go all the
- 23:57way to Jerusalem. When the Samaritan
- 24:00woman meets Jesus, she says, "You Jews
- 24:02worship in Jerusalem, but we Samaritans
- 24:05worship on this mountain. We've picked
- 24:07our way of worshiping God. You have your
- 24:09interpretation. We have ours." Right? So
- 24:13he's going to Jerusalem and on his way
- 24:15he needs to stay the night in a
- 24:17Samaritan village. But when they find
- 24:18out that he's heading toward Jerusalem,
- 24:20they say, "No, you're not welcome here
- 24:22because we don't like Jerusalem and we
- 24:24don't like that thing in you that thinks
- 24:26you have to go all the way to
- 24:27Jerusalem." This is like a
- 24:29thousand-year-old argument, a
- 24:32thousand-year-old rebellion. And the
- 24:34Samaritans don't want to help him
- 24:37because he's going to Jerusalem.
- 24:40But they did not receive him because he
- 24:42was traveling toward Jerusalem. When his
- 24:44disciples James and John saw this, they
- 24:46said, "Lord, do you want us to command
- 24:49fire to come down from heaven and
- 24:51consume them?
- 24:55They are mad." So this is the second
- 24:58time that James and John are
- 25:00misunderstanding supernatural power.
- 25:03They're getting the idea that Jesus
- 25:04isn't coming with an army. They think
- 25:07he's coming with supernatural power. So,
- 25:09let's use that supernatural power to
- 25:12bring the will of the flesh.
- 25:14So, they're offended. They say, "We
- 25:17wanted to give get a hotel room in this
- 25:20village for our king, for our master,
- 25:22and these awful people knew that we were
- 25:25going to Jerusalem, and these bigots
- 25:27said no." They're like, "Can we use this
- 25:30supernatural power you've been helping
- 25:32us with to call down fire from heaven
- 25:34and consume them?"
- 25:36It's just like the question of who's the
- 25:38greatest
- 25:39>> because it's all about how can I use
- 25:41God's power to exalt and elevate myself,
- 25:45[snorts] my ego, my plans.
- 25:48And he turned and rebuked them.
- 25:53He is not happy.
- 25:56And he said, "You do not know what kind
- 25:59of spirit you are of.
- 26:02For the Son of Man did not come to
- 26:05destroy men's lives, but to save them."
- 26:09And they went on to another village.
- 26:14So he is angry.
- 26:18You are tapping into the spirit of the
- 26:20destroyer.
- 26:22Do you understand? Whoever seeks to save
- 26:26his life is coming under the power of
- 26:29him who controls people through the fear
- 26:32of death.
- 26:34So you don't know what spirit you're of.
- 26:36When you start treating people like
- 26:38that, when people offend you and you've
- 26:40got to destroy them,
- 26:43you are coming under the influence of
- 26:45your enemy. You are already losing the
- 26:48battle. And he says, "I didn't come to
- 26:51act like that. I came to save people.
- 26:55As they were going along the road,
- 26:57someone said to him, "I will follow you
- 27:00wherever you go." Seems like a little
- 27:02bit of a tense moment has just passed.
- 27:04The disciples have been rebuked. They've
- 27:06been told they don't know what spirit
- 27:07they're
- 27:09>> [clears throat]
- 27:09>> uh they're going to have to travel to
- 27:11the next hotel. And um somebody has a
- 27:15flowery compliment
- 27:17maybe to distinguish themsel from James
- 27:19and John. I will follow you wherever you
- 27:23go.
- 27:25And Jesus said to him, now notice,
- 27:29they've just tried to get lodgings and
- 27:33they couldn't get it.
- 27:35Okay? And at the inconvenience, the
- 27:38disciples have become hotheaded and he
- 27:41he's gotten angry and rebuked them. So
- 27:44he's kind of addressing that.
- 27:47He says, "Foxes have holes or hotel
- 27:50rooms, and the birds of the air have
- 27:53nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to
- 27:57lay his head."
- 27:59He's saying, "You want to follow me, you
- 28:02need to get comfortable with being
- 28:03rejected.
- 28:06You want to follow me, you need to be
- 28:08okay with being misunderstood,
- 28:11of having no comfortable place in this
- 28:13world." Now, it doesn't mean he's not
- 28:15going to lay down that night. He did.
- 28:18He's just saying spiritually and in the
- 28:20big picture, this world doesn't have any
- 28:22place for me.
- 28:25And he said to another, "Follow me." And
- 28:28he said, "Lord, permit me first to go
- 28:30and bury my father."
- 28:33But he said to him, "Allow the dead to
- 28:36bury their own dead, but as for you, go
- 28:40and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of
- 28:42God." Another also said, "I will follow
- 28:46you, Lord, but first permit me to say
- 28:48goodbye to those at home." But Jesus
- 28:51said to him, "No one, after putting his
- 28:54hand to the plow and looking back is fit
- 28:57for the kingdom of God."
- 29:00This is radical.
- 29:02Is it bad to honor your father by giving
- 29:05him a burial? No. Jesus went to
- 29:09Lazarus's grave.
- 29:12Jesus was given an honorable burial.
- 29:16It's the idea that anything [music]
- 29:19should ever come before following God.
- 29:23If you can bury your father as an
- 29:25expression of following Jesus, then do
- 29:27it. [music] But if you use those family
- 29:31ties
- 29:32to delay the journey of total surrender,
- 29:36then those family ties [music]
- 29:38become idols.
- 29:40and there's no place for you in the
- 29:42kingdom of God.
- 29:44And he says, "No one after putting their
- 29:46hand to the plow and looking back is
- 29:50fit."
- 29:52This is a completely different metaphor.
- 29:54[music] It's a metaphor of of farming.
- 29:56If you're plowing through a field, you
- 29:59got a plow in front of you and a horse
- 30:01pulling it. It takes all your energy to
- 30:05keep that plow heading straight across
- 30:08that field.
- 30:10If you have that hand on the plow and
- 30:13you look over your shoulder,
- 30:15start looking to see who's watching,
- 30:17what's going to happen to your furrow?
- 30:21You're going to go veering and ruining
- 30:24the field of God. And that's what it's
- 30:27like when people come to serve the field
- 30:30of the Lord, which is his people. Serve
- 30:34lives, serve families, serve the church.
- 30:38But they're constantly looking to see
- 30:40who's watching or looking to see what
- 30:42[music] they left behind or looking to
- 30:44see where there's more money. They're
- 30:47plowing through and hurting people.
- 30:49Instead [music] of tilling up the weeds,
- 30:51instead of furrowing the plants, they're
- 30:56tearing through
- 30:58and hurting lives. We've all seen that,
- 31:00haven't we? So he [music] says, if if
- 31:02you can't keep your focus, if you can't
- 31:05keep your priorities straight and keep
- 31:09your furrows straight in line with where
- 31:12God is leading you, you're not fit to
- 31:15touch the plow of a ministry, the plow
- 31:19of a mission, the plow of service in the
- 31:22field of God.
- 31:25[music]
