- 0:00Luke [music]
- 0:018 verse 1. So afterwards he began going
- 0:06around from one city and village [music]
- 0:07to another proclaiming and preaching the
- 0:10kingdom of God.
- 0:13The twel [music] were with him and also
- 0:15some women who had been healed of evil
- 0:18spirits and sicknesses.
- 0:20Mary, who was called Magdalene, from
- 0:23whom [music] seven demons had gone out,
- 0:26and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's
- 0:29[music] steward, and Susanna, and many
- 0:32others who were contributing to their
- 0:34[music] support out of their private
- 0:36means.
- 0:38So, it sounds [music] to me from this
- 0:40that Jesus is going with the 12 in a
- 0:43teaching and ministry [music] capacity,
- 0:45declaring the kingdom of God. But they
- 0:48also have a team of women who are
- 0:50ministering [music] to them in the
- 0:52practical areas. So they are
- 0:55contributing with their private means
- 0:58probably referring to some wealth, but
- 1:00they're also [music] that means they
- 1:01were probably helping with cooking and
- 1:03laundry and whatever else was going on
- 1:06at that time. But they were supporting.
- 1:10When a large crowd was coming together
- 1:13and those from various cities were
- 1:15journeying to him, he spoke by way of a
- 1:19parable.
- 1:20The sewer went out to sew his seed. And
- 1:24as he sowed, some fell beside the road,
- 1:28and it was trampled underfoot, and the
- 1:31birds of the air ate it up.
- 1:35Other seed fell on [music] rocky soil,
- 1:37and as soon as it grew up, it withered
- 1:40away because it had no moisture.
- 1:44Other seed fell among the thorns, and
- 1:46the thorns grew up with it and choked it
- 1:49out.
- 1:51Other seed fell into the good soil and
- 1:54grew up and produced a crop 100 times as
- 1:58great.
- 2:00As he said these things, he would call
- 2:02out, "He who has ears to hear, let him
- 2:06hear." So, he's just given four
- 2:08different kinds of soil. And and Luke
- 2:11says, "As he said these things, he would
- 2:14call out, he who has ears to hear, let
- 2:19him hear."
- 2:21What What do you think that suggests
- 2:23about what he's teaching?
- 2:26Why is he calling out in the middle of
- 2:28what he's saying? He who has ears to
- 2:31hear, let him hear. After he describes
- 2:34each one of the soils, he cries out, "He
- 2:37who has ears to hear, let him hear." Why
- 2:39do you [music] think that is?
- 2:42What he's suggesting is that the soil
- 2:47is how we hear,
- 2:50how we hear with our ears, how we hear
- 2:51with our hearts, our minds.
- 2:54And he's actually suggesting that we can
- 2:58change the soil.
- 3:01That we can move from being people with
- 3:03rocky soil to being people with fertile
- 3:06soil just in the way we listen.
- 3:11His disciples began questioning him as
- 3:14to what this parable meant. And he said,
- 3:18"To you it has been granted to know the
- 3:20mysteries of the kingdom of God,
- 3:23but to the rest it is in parables so
- 3:27that seeing they may not see and hearing
- 3:30they may not understand."
- 3:34Now the parable is this. The seed is the
- 3:38word of God.
- 3:40Those beside the road are those who have
- 3:43heard.
- 3:44Then the devil comes and takes away the
- 3:46word from their heart so that they will
- 3:49not believe and be saved.
- 3:53Those on the rocky soil are those who
- 3:56when they hear receive the word with joy
- 4:00and these have no firm root.
- 4:04They believe for a while and in time of
- 4:08temptation fall away.
- 4:12the seed which fell among the thorns.
- 4:14These are the ones who have heard. And
- 4:16as they go on their way, they are choked
- 4:19with worries and riches and pleasures of
- 4:21this life and bring no fruit to
- 4:24maturity.
- 4:27But the seed in the good soil, these are
- 4:29the ones who have heard the word in an
- 4:32honest and good heart and hold it fast
- 4:36and bear fruit with perseverance.
- 4:42So there's a theme here. One, the soil
- 4:45relates to hearing. Two,
- 4:49the soils that lost the truth often
- 4:53times had to do with not being able to
- 4:57continue, persevere, or have patience.
- 5:00So the conclusion is they bear fruit
- 5:03with perseverance.
- 5:05The others they had fruit but they
- 5:07couldn't bring it to maturity. The
- 5:08others they heard it but couldn't hold
- 5:10on to it. The others they had belief but
- 5:14they lost that initial belief.
- 5:18What's interesting is this parable is
- 5:20not written for seers.
- 5:24This is not cautioning seed planters to
- 5:27plant in less places.
- 5:30This parable is written for soil. It's
- 5:34written for hearers.
- 5:36It's telling us that we are going to
- 5:39make the word of God fruitful or
- 5:42unfruitful based on how we hear and how
- 5:45we persevere in being faithful with what
- 5:49we heard. Because we can hear and lose
- 5:51it. We can believe and lose it. We can
- 5:53get grace and lose it. That's the
- 5:56parable.
- 5:58Those by the road are those who have
- 6:00heard the word and the devil comes and
- 6:03takes away the word from their heart so
- 6:05that they will not believe and be saved.
- 6:08The road represents
- 6:11hard packed soil where people walk a
- 6:13lot. When life has trampled you, when
- 6:18you've gone through a lot, your
- 6:20emotions, your heart can become harder.
- 6:24You're more jaded. You're less likely to
- 6:26be responsive.
- 6:28those on the rocky soil. This is just
- 6:31people who don't have depth.
- 6:34People who haven't gone through pain and
- 6:36experience enough to make them
- 6:38appreciate when something special is
- 6:41coming their way. So they are quick to
- 6:43respond. Oh, that was great. They spring
- 6:45up with joy,
- 6:47but they have no firm root. They believe
- 6:51for a while
- 6:53and in time of temptation fall away. So
- 6:56much for the idea that once you believe,
- 6:58you're always going to be saved. These
- 7:00people believe for a while, but in
- 7:02temptation, they fall away. He's telling
- 7:05us that falling away is ceasing to
- 7:06believe. He's making falling away and
- 7:10believe
- 7:11interchangeable.
- 7:13If you continue, then you're still
- 7:14believing. If you don't continue, you're
- 7:16you're unbelieving.
- 7:19The seed which fell among the thorns.
- 7:21This is the idea that there are other
- 7:23plants growing in your life that are
- 7:24already taking up the nutrients of your
- 7:27mind and heart and soil. There are
- 7:30thorns and those thorns are the worries,
- 7:35the fears that you haven't surrendered
- 7:36to God, the ambitions, the riches, the
- 7:39pleasures of this life. And in this
- 7:42case, the fruit is stunted. The plant is
- 7:45stunted. So the fruit comes but it never
- 7:48comes to maturity.
- 7:51You you can have a faith with God that
- 7:53grows like a little shrub among your
- 7:55thorns of worldliness,
- 7:58but it's never going to produce peaches
- 8:01that fully ripen. They're going to be
- 8:03these little stunted things and then
- 8:04they're going to die off before they
- 8:05ever turn red with ripeness. But the
- 8:09seed in the good soil, these are the
- 8:11ones who have heard the word in an
- 8:13honest and good heart.
- 8:18So the whole question is the condition
- 8:20of your heart and how you hear and how
- 8:22you persevere.
- 8:25The way he describes the good heart is
- 8:26honesty.
- 8:29What is the honesty? What is the
- 8:31dishonesty in the other three soils?
- 8:35The dishonesty in the other soils are
- 8:38they're not honest about the seriousness
- 8:40of their condition and so they don't
- 8:42appreciate what God has given. They're
- 8:44not honest about the shallowess of their
- 8:47own participation.
- 8:49They don't continue and persevere,
- 8:52right? They're not honest about the
- 8:54things in their life that are choking
- 8:56out the word. They're not honest about
- 8:59how much space and nutrients and energy
- 9:02they're giving to the cares of this
- 9:04world, the pleasures and riches of this
- 9:06world. Right? So, the good soil is
- 9:11honest. It lets God show them, are you
- 9:15bearing fruit? And if not, here's why.
- 9:18But again, this isn't written for seers.
- 9:20This is written for soil. And we are the
- 9:23soil. And we get to change because
- 9:27honesty is something that we can
- 9:29receive. We can learn to be honest. And
- 9:32thus, we can get a good heart.
- 9:36Says the good soil, they had a good
- 9:38heart. They had honesty. And it says
- 9:41they held it fast. That means they
- 9:45gripped it tenaciously.
- 9:47They held it fast.
- 9:50They viewed the word of God as precious
- 9:54as life. And they held it fast.
- 9:58And they bear fruit with what?
- 10:01Perseverance.
- 10:04Honesty, a good heart, hold it fast, and
- 10:08persevere.
- 10:09Those are the things that are going to
- 10:11mark the good soil.
- 10:14Now, no one after lighting a lamp covers
- 10:19it with a container or puts it under a
- 10:23table,
- 10:24but puts it on a lampstand
- 10:28so that those who come in may see the
- 10:32light.
- 10:34For nothing is hidden [clears throat]
- 10:36that will not become evident,
- 10:39nor anything secret that will not be
- 10:42made known and come to light.
- 10:45So
- 10:48take care
- 10:50how you listen.
- 10:54For whoever has,
- 10:57to him more shall be given.
- 11:00and whoever does not have even what he
- 11:03thinks he has shall be taken away from
- 11:05him.
- 11:07And his mother and brothers came to him,
- 11:10and they were unable to get to him
- 11:12because of the crowd.
- 11:14And it was reported to him, "Your mother
- 11:16and your brothers are standing outside
- 11:18wishing to see you."
- 11:20But he answered and said to them, "My
- 11:22mother and my brothers are those who
- 11:24hear the word of God and do it."
- 11:29So Luke is not randomly jotting down
- 11:33disconnected stories that somebody told
- 11:35him. There is a continuity of thought
- 11:38between the sewer, the lamp, and the
- 11:42story about his mom and brothers.
- 11:44And the continuity of thought is
- 11:48you people need to hear differently.
- 11:52So take care how you listen. For whoever
- 11:56has to him more shall be given and
- 11:59whoever does not have even what he
- 12:01thinks he has shall be taken away. So in
- 12:04the first situation he told about a seed
- 12:06that was taken away by the devil. A seed
- 12:08that was taken away by the wind. A seed
- 12:11that was taken away by thorns and by a
- 12:14lack of perseverance. Do you understand?
- 12:17And in the second one he's telling about
- 12:20a light that is going to be taken away.
- 12:25Do you understand? And he says, "No one
- 12:28after lighting a lamp covers it with a
- 12:31container or puts it under a bed, but
- 12:35puts it on a lampstand so that those who
- 12:38come in may see the light.
- 12:42For nothing is hidden that will not
- 12:44become evident, nor anything secret that
- 12:46will not be made known. So take care how
- 12:52you
- 12:53listen.
- 12:56For whoever has, to him more shall be
- 13:00given, and whoever does not have, even
- 13:03what he thinks he has, shall be taken
- 13:07away from him. So perhaps what he's
- 13:10saying is that
- 13:13if you are a person for whom God lights
- 13:17your lamp and you take that lamp and
- 13:21make it a small thing, you you make
- 13:23little of that light and you put it
- 13:25under a bed, under a basket,
- 13:28you're going to lose that light that was
- 13:29from God, just like you're going to lose
- 13:31the seed that was from God. Because the
- 13:34reason God sws into your life is not
- 13:37just about you. It's about the fruit
- 13:40you're going to bear for others. And
- 13:42it's the same with the lamp. When God
- 13:45speaks something to you, if it's all
- 13:47about you, you stick it under your own
- 13:49bed. You hide it under your lamp. Oh, I
- 13:53had a great word that was so special in
- 13:55the service last night.
- 13:57But God wants this to go to others. His
- 14:01grace toward you should not die with
- 14:03you. His grace toward you should shine
- 14:07on others.
- 14:09And so while he Jesus is being this lamp
- 14:13and he is bearing this fruit himself,
- 14:17his mother and brothers come
- 14:20and
- 14:22they show that they have the wrong kind
- 14:24of soil.
- 14:26They show that they haven't acted on the
- 14:29grace that God has given them.
- 14:32They don't know how to hear with honor.
- 14:35They hear him as just, "Oh, that's our
- 14:38relative. That's that's our son. Don't
- 14:41mind him." In Mark's version says they
- 14:44came to arrest him because they thought
- 14:46he'd gone insane.
- 14:49They thought faith was bizarre. They
- 14:52thought boldness was foolishness.
- 14:55Right? They thought courage was a lack
- 14:58of wisdom.
- 15:00So he answered and said, "My mother and
- 15:02brothers are those who hear the word of
- 15:06God and do it."
- 15:09Okay? Do it by bearing fruit. Do it by
- 15:12putting it on a lampstand. Do do it by
- 15:16letting the grace that was given to you
- 15:18become a grace that is multiplied to
- 15:21others.
- 15:22On one of those days, Jesus and his
- 15:24disciples got into a boat and he said to
- 15:26them, "Let us go over to the other side
- 15:28of the lake." So they launched out. But
- 15:31as they were sailing along, he fell
- 15:34asleep. And a fierce gale of wind
- 15:37descended on the lake, and they began to
- 15:40be swamped and to be in danger. They
- 15:43came to Jesus and woke him up, saying,
- 15:46"Master, master, we are perishing."
- 15:50And he got up and rebuked the wind and
- 15:52the surging waves and they stopped and
- 15:55it became calm. They came to Jesus and
- 15:58woke him up saying, "Master, master, we
- 16:00are perishing."
- 16:02And he got up and rebuked the wind and
- 16:04the surging waves. And they stopped and
- 16:07it became calm. And he said to them,
- 16:10"Where is your faith?"
- 16:13They were fearful and amazed, saying to
- 16:15one another, "Who is this them? That he
- 16:18commands even the wind and the water,
- 16:20and they obey him."
- 16:23The message is that
- 16:26they're learning who Jesus is. They
- 16:28don't understand, and they're learning
- 16:31who is this. He has authority over the
- 16:34wind and the waves.
- 16:36Amen.
- 16:38But he has authority over more than the
- 16:40wind and the waves. Then they sailed to
- 16:43the country of the Garrison, which is
- 16:45opposite Galilee. And when he came out
- 16:47onto the land, he was met by a man from
- 16:50the city who was possessed with demons,
- 16:53and who had not put on any clothing for
- 16:55a long time, and was not living in a
- 16:58house, but in the tombs.
- 17:01Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell
- 17:03before him and said in a loud voice,
- 17:06"What business do we have with each
- 17:09other, Jesus, son of the most high God?
- 17:12I beg you, do not torment me."
- 17:16For he had commanded the unclean spirit
- 17:18to come out of the man.
- 17:20For it had seized him many times, and he
- 17:23was bound with chains and shackles, and
- 17:25kept under guard. And yet he would break
- 17:28his bonds and be driven by the demon
- 17:30into the desert. And Jesus asked him,
- 17:34"What is your name?" And he said,
- 17:38"Leion,
- 17:39for many demons had entered him."
- 17:43They were imploring him not to command
- 17:46them to go away into the abyss.
- 17:49Now there was a herd of many swine
- 17:52[clears throat] feeding there on the
- 17:54mountain. And the demons implored him to
- 17:57permit them to enter the swine.
- 18:00And he gave them permission.
- 18:03And the demons came out of the man and
- 18:05entered the swine. And the herd rushed
- 18:08down the steep bank into the lake and
- 18:10was drowned.
- 18:12When the herdsmen saw what had happened,
- 18:14they ran away and reported it to the
- 18:17city and out in the country. The people
- 18:20went out to see what had happened. And
- 18:22they came to Jesus and found the man
- 18:24from whom the demons had gone out
- 18:26sitting down at the feet of Jesus,
- 18:29clothed and in his right mind. And they
- 18:32became frightened.
- 18:36They're not frightened by a man who
- 18:37breaks chains, lives among the tombs.
- 18:39They're not frightened by a man who's
- 18:41possessed with a legion of demons.
- 18:43They're accustomed to that. That's
- 18:45become normal in the town. But an
- 18:48authority from God that casts it out,
- 18:50that frees people, sets them free,
- 18:53that's terrifying.
- 18:55Those who had seen it reported to them
- 18:57how the man was demonpossessed and had
- 19:00been made well. And all the people of
- 19:02the country of the garrison and the
- 19:04surrounding district asked him Jesus to
- 19:08leave them for they were gripped with
- 19:10great fear. And he got into the boat and
- 19:14returned. But the man from whom the
- 19:16demons had gone out was begging him that
- 19:19he might accompany him. But he sent him
- 19:22away saying, "Return to your house and
- 19:26describe what great things God has done
- 19:30for you." So he went away proclaiming
- 19:34throughout the whole city what great
- 19:36things Jesus had done for him.
- 19:40There's a profound lesson here.
- 19:43Jesus was coming to this country, this
- 19:47region, this city to minister, to bring
- 19:51the message of salvation.
- 19:54And they were getting a visitation from
- 19:56God.
- 19:58And yet their fear made the Lord get
- 20:02back into the boat and go over to the
- 20:04opposite side of the lake.
- 20:07And that tells us that even if God has a
- 20:10plan for us, our fear can exile that
- 20:14promise and send him back over to the
- 20:16other side of the lake. But in his
- 20:19mercy, he tells the man not to come with
- 20:23him, but to stay and tell his testimony.
- 20:28And through the telling of his
- 20:29testimony, many people are going to
- 20:32start to believe in what God has done
- 20:35through the eyewitness, through the
- 20:37firshand testimony accounts of those
- 20:40whose lives have been transformed.
- 20:42And as Jesus returned, the people
- 20:44welcomed him, for they had all been
- 20:46waiting for him. And there came a man
- 20:49named Gyrus, and he was an official of
- 20:52the synagogue. and he fell at Jesus's
- 20:54feet and began to implore him to come to
- 20:57his house, for he had an only daughter
- 21:00about 12 years old,
- 21:02and she was dying.
- 21:05But as he went, the crowds were pressing
- 21:08against him.
- 21:10And a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12
- 21:13years
- 21:15and could not be healed by anyone came
- 21:18up behind him and touched the fringe of
- 21:20his cloak. And immediately her
- 21:22hemorrhage stopped. And Jesus said, "Who
- 21:26is the one who touched me?" And while
- 21:29they were all denying it, Peter said,
- 21:33"Master, the people are crowding and
- 21:36pressing in on you." But Jesus said,
- 21:40"Someone
- 21:44someone did touch me, for I was aware
- 21:48that power had gone out of me.
- 21:52When the woman saw that she had not
- 21:54escaped notice, she came trembling and
- 21:57fell down before him and declared in the
- 21:59presence of all the people the reason
- 22:02why she had touched him and how she had
- 22:06been immediately healed. And he said to
- 22:08her, "Daughter, your faith has made you
- 22:12well. Go in peace."
- 22:16While he was still speaking, someone
- 22:18came from the house of the synagogue
- 22:19official, saying, "Your daughter has
- 22:22died. Do not trouble the teacher
- 22:24anymore."
- 22:27But when Jesus heard this, he answered,
- 22:30"Do not be afraid any longer. Only
- 22:32believe and she will be made well."
- 22:36Okay, let's look at this a little bit
- 22:37closely.
- 22:39So Jesus is chased out of one place
- 22:43because they're afraid of the move of
- 22:45God.
- 22:47And they're more afraid of deliverance
- 22:49than they are of bondage. So he gets in
- 22:51the boat and the people are waiting for
- 22:53him on the other side. So it's pretty
- 22:56stark contrast. Some crowds are begging
- 22:59him to leave. Other crowds are begging
- 23:00him to come. Gyrus is imploring him to
- 23:05come to his house.
- 23:08and he's setting out to do it. We have a
- 23:1112-year-old daughter and then we have a
- 23:15woman come up who's been bound for 12
- 23:19years. So, we really have two daughters
- 23:22and two 12-year periods,
- 23:25but both are to bring to this point of
- 23:29revelation to see the glory of God.
- 23:33The woman is in a crowd and the crowd is
- 23:35pressing in around him. But
- 23:39Jesus and this story tells us that
- 23:43touching God with faith is different
- 23:47than touching him by coincidence or
- 23:50touching him in the crowd. that when you
- 23:53touch with a faith,
- 23:56with a a confidence, a belief, a plea, a
- 23:59prayer, that touch releases power that
- 24:03the other touches didn't release. And
- 24:06Peter didn't understand this. So, in his
- 24:08sarcasm, he's like, "Lord, there's a
- 24:11crowd around you. That's a pretty silly
- 24:13thing to say. Someone touched me." And
- 24:17Jesus says, "No,
- 24:19I was aware that power had gone out of
- 24:22me."
- 24:25And the woman's terrified because she
- 24:27didn't ask for this. She was deeply
- 24:29embarrassed.
- 24:31Her affliction was an embarrassing
- 24:33affliction. And so, she was hoping she
- 24:35could just sneak up and touch him
- 24:38quietly and go away. But her faith
- 24:43pulled power from God. When you go to
- 24:46touch the Lord in prayer, in song, in
- 24:50the hearing of his word,
- 24:53don't be like the crowd.
- 24:56Touch him with faith, with an
- 24:58expectation that if I can connect,
- 25:02I'm going to be changed. The other
- 25:05gospels tell us that the woman was
- 25:07saying to herself, "If only I can touch
- 25:10the hymn of his garment, I know I will
- 25:13be healed."
- 25:15That's faith. And a touch in faith
- 25:18releases power. A jostling with the
- 25:20crowd does not. And he calls her,
- 25:22"Daughter, your faith has made you
- 25:25well." We're still on the way to Gyrus's
- 25:27house, and he's just told them, "Do not
- 25:29be afraid. Only believe."
- 25:33When he came to the house, [music] he
- 25:35did not allow anyone to enter with him
- 25:37except Peter, James, and John, and the
- 25:41girl's father and mother.
- 25:44Now they were all weeping and lamenting
- 25:46for her.
- 25:48But he said, "Stop weeping, for she has
- 25:52not died, but is asleep."
- 25:57Is Jesus telling the truth?
- 26:04In our reality, the answer would be no.
- 26:08In the manbound, humanbound reality,
- 26:14that would be an untrue statement.
- 26:17But in the reality where all things are
- 26:19possible, that's the truth.
- 26:22This is [music] not a permanent
- 26:24condition and death is a permanent
- 26:26condition. So he is declaring consistent
- 26:30with [music] his own power
- 26:33that this girl is not going to die. Stop
- 26:36weeping for she is not dead for she has
- 26:40not died but is asleep. And they began
- 26:43laughing at him knowing that she had
- 26:46died.
- 26:48He however took her by the hand and
- 26:52called her saying child arise.
- 26:56And her spirit returned and she got up
- 26:58immediately. And he gave orders for
- 27:01something to be given her to eat. Her
- 27:03parents were amazed, but he instructed
- 27:06them to tell no one what had happened.
- 27:10[music]
