- 0:00Luke 7:1
- 0:02And a centurion slave who was highly
- 0:05regarded by him, the centurion, was
- 0:07[music] sick and about to die.
- 0:11When he, the centurion, heard about
- 0:13Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders
- 0:15[music]
- 0:16asking him to come and save the life of
- 0:18his slave.
- 0:21When they came to Jesus, they earnestly
- 0:24implored him, saying, "He is worthy for
- 0:27you to grant this to [music] him,
- 0:30for he loves our nation,
- 0:33and it was he who built us [music] our
- 0:35synagogue."
- 0:38Now Jesus started on his way with them.
- 0:41And when he was not far from the house,
- 0:44the centurion sent friends saying to
- 0:47him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself,
- 0:51for I am not worthy for you to come
- 0:53under my roof."
- 0:56It would have been against the law for
- 1:00Jesus [music] to enter the house of a
- 1:03gentile.
- 1:05That would have been taboo according to
- 1:07Jewish custom.
- 1:09And so Jesus is going to heal this guy
- 1:13even though it's likely going to get him
- 1:15in a lot of trouble. And the centurion
- 1:18sends friends and says, "Tell him you
- 1:21don't have to come under my roof.
- 1:24For this reason,
- 1:26I did not even consider myself worthy to
- 1:29come to you.
- 1:31But just say the word and my servant
- 1:35will be healed.
- 1:37For I also am a man placed under
- 1:39authority with soldiers under me. And I
- 1:43say to this one, "Go," and he goes. And
- 1:45to another, "Come," and he comes. And to
- 1:48my slave, "Do this." And he does it.
- 1:52So the centurion has incredible honor.
- 1:55Not only is he a kind man who built the
- 1:57synagogue for the people that his
- 1:59military conquered,
- 2:01he's a humble man. He says, "I'm not
- 2:04worthy for you to come under my roof."
- 2:08But he's also a man of faith.
- 2:12He tells Jesus, "You can speak
- 2:16to the sin and the sickness and the
- 2:20powers of evil in our lives and they'll
- 2:23go away." Cuz I know how authority
- 2:25works. Not because I'm a man in
- 2:28authority or over others, but I'm a man
- 2:31under authority.
- 2:34and I want to be under your authority is
- 2:36what he's suggesting.
- 2:39And he's saying, I think you're an
- 2:41officer like me, Jesus.
- 2:44I think you're an officer of mercy. And
- 2:47I think you can speak the word, and
- 2:50these sicknesses are going to go just
- 2:54like my slaves go. And [clears throat]
- 2:56grace is going to come just like my
- 2:59servant comes. and I'm going to be
- 3:01obedient to your word as well. Do you
- 3:04understand how he's using this? But it's
- 3:06powerful that he doesn't say you're a
- 3:08man in authority or o in authority over
- 3:11others. He says you're a man under
- 3:12authority like me. He understood that
- 3:16Jesus was in submission.
- 3:19Now when Jesus heard this, he marveled
- 3:23at him.
- 3:27There are many times good handful of
- 3:29times where the Bible tells us that
- 3:31Jesus marveled
- 3:33that he was amazed, that he was
- 3:35astonished. Same word.
- 3:38Almost never is it a good thing. He
- 3:41marvels at their unbelief.
- 3:44He marvels at their dullness, their
- 3:47inability to understand.
- 3:51He marvels at their lack of faith. Okay?
- 3:54But he doesn't often marvel in a good
- 3:57way. But here he does. Here we have a
- 4:00gentile,
- 4:02a commander of the military that is
- 4:04oppressing them.
- 4:07When Jesus heard this, he marveled at
- 4:09him and turned and said to the crowd
- 4:11that was following him, I say to you,
- 4:17not even in Israel have I found such
- 4:21great faith.
- 4:23So he's just told them, "I haven't found
- 4:26this among any of you."
- 4:30This guy knows what faith is. When those
- 4:34who had been sent returned to the house,
- 4:36they found the slave in good health.
- 4:39Soon afterwards, he Jesus went to a city
- 4:42called Naine, and his disciples were
- 4:44going along with him, [clears throat]
- 4:46accompanied by a large crowd. Now, as he
- 4:49approached the gate of the city, a dead
- 4:52man was being carried out, the only son
- 4:56of his mother, and she was a widow, and
- 5:00a sizable crowd from the city was with
- 5:03her. When the Lord saw her, he felt
- 5:08compassion for her, and he said to her,
- 5:11"Do not weep."
- 5:16And he came up and touched the coffin.
- 5:20And the bearers came to a halt. And he
- 5:24said, "Young man, I say to you, arise."
- 5:31And the dead man sat up and began to
- 5:34speak. And Jesus gave him back to his
- 5:37mother.
- 5:38Fear gripped them all, and they began
- 5:41glorifying God. A great prophet has
- 5:44arisen among us
- 5:47and God has visited his people. They
- 5:49said the report concerning him went out
- 5:54all over Judea and in all the
- 5:56surrounding district.
- 5:59Jesus is traveling [clears throat]
- 6:01and he sees a funeral procession.
- 6:04Now if a Jew touched a dead body, he
- 6:08would be unclean for a certain number of
- 6:12days. It was a big deal. He wasn't
- 6:15allowed to be in public society for a
- 6:18certain number of days if he touched a
- 6:20dead body. It's a big deal.
- 6:24But Jesus is so sure of what is about to
- 6:28happen. He is moved with compassion for
- 6:31the woman. Luke gives us the details. Of
- 6:34course, he tells us that the woman is a
- 6:37widow. He tells us this was her only
- 6:40son. He tells us the town they're about
- 6:42to enter. And Jesus walks up and he
- 6:46doesn't talk to a corpse. He talks to
- 6:49the man. He says, "Young man, I say to
- 6:53you, arise."
- 6:56But when it happens, it doesn't say
- 6:58great rejoicing came upon all the
- 7:00people. It says great fear gripped them
- 7:04all and they be began glorifying God
- 7:08saying a great prophet has arisen among
- 7:11us. God has visited his people. God
- 7:16visited a funeral.
- 7:18God visited a coffin.
- 7:21But when he did, life came from the
- 7:24dead. That's what it's like when God
- 7:26visits his people. He interrupts our
- 7:29sorrow. He disrupts our misery, our
- 7:33hopelessness. He stops our death
- 7:35procession.
- 7:37And he brings life out of impossibility.
- 7:40The disciples of John reported to him
- 7:43about all these things. They went and
- 7:44told John. Summoning two of his
- 7:47disciples, John sent them to the Lord,
- 7:49saying, "Are you the expected one, or do
- 7:53we look for someone else?"
- 7:57When the men came to Jesus, they
- 7:59said,"John the Baptist has sent us to
- 8:01you to ask, are you the expected one,
- 8:05the coming one, the Messiah?" That's
- 8:07what that refers to.
- 8:10Or do we look for someone else? There's
- 8:13a little bit of pressure in that. John
- 8:15is in prison when he sends them and he's
- 8:18basically asking, "Why aren't you
- 8:20helping us more? Why isn't the
- 8:23revolution starting? Why are you letting
- 8:26Herod do this to me? And if you if you
- 8:29don't have it, could you let us know so
- 8:30that we can find somebody else? Cuz we
- 8:32need to get free.
- 8:35Little bit of pressure, don't you think?
- 8:37Cousin John is getting nervous.
- 8:40Are you the expected one or do we look
- 8:42for someone else? At that very time, he
- 8:47Jesus cured many people of diseases and
- 8:49afflictions and evil spirits. And he
- 8:52gave sight to many who were blind. And
- 8:54he answered and said to them, "Go report
- 8:58to John what you
- 9:01have seen and heard.
- 9:04The blind receive sight. The lame walk.
- 9:10The lepers are cleansed.
- 9:12The deaf hear. The dead are raised up.
- 9:16The poor have the gospel preached to
- 9:18them.
- 9:20Blessed is he who does not take offense
- 9:24at me. [snorts]
- 9:26So he's John is saying you're not
- 9:29helping us get free of oppression. Are
- 9:32you really the Messiah? And Jesus is
- 9:35saying I'm not working in the power you
- 9:38expect, but I'm working in the power of
- 9:40God. And he tells John's disciples to go
- 9:43tell John what they see and hear. not
- 9:46what Jesus thinks about himself, but
- 9:49what they have encountered while with
- 9:51him. And he quotes from Isaiah 35 where
- 9:56it says, "Behold, your God comes and the
- 10:00blind shall see and the lame shall leap
- 10:02and the tongue of the mute shall be
- 10:04opened." So John knows his Bible and
- 10:08Jesus is saying it's not just that a
- 10:10deliverer has come but your God has come
- 10:14in fulfillment of Isaiah 35. But he says
- 10:17blessed is he who does not take offense
- 10:20because of me. And this literally means
- 10:23blessed is he who does not feel that I
- 10:26have let him down. I have disappointed
- 10:28him. Who is not stumbling over the way
- 10:32I'm doing things.
- 10:34When the messengers of John had left, he
- 10:38Jesus began to speak to the crowds about
- 10:41John.
- 10:43What did you go out into the wilderness
- 10:44to see? A reed shaken by the wind. He's
- 10:48saying, "Why'd y'all go out in the
- 10:49wilderness? There's not much to see if
- 10:51you go out into the wilderness." Oh,
- 10:53there there are some reeds. Is that what
- 10:55you went out to see? Some dry bushes.
- 10:59What did you go out to see?
- 11:01But what did you go out to see? Oh, I
- 11:04know you went out to see a man dressed
- 11:06in soft clothing. He says, "What on
- 11:08earth did you do that for? Why'd you all
- 11:10make that trip into the desert all that
- 11:12time ago?"
- 11:14But what did you go out to see? A man
- 11:16dressed in soft clothing.
- 11:18Those who are splendidly clothed and
- 11:21live in luxury are found in royal
- 11:23palaces. He says, "They're not found in
- 11:25the desert. Why'd you go out to the
- 11:27desert?
- 11:29But what did you go out to see?"
- 11:32He's trying to get him to remember what
- 11:34got them so activated to go on that trip
- 11:37and be baptized because he feels they've
- 11:40lost the faith. He feels the excitement
- 11:44has waned.
- 11:46But what did you got to see? A prophet.
- 11:50Yes, I say to you, and one who is more
- 11:55than a prophet.
- 11:57This is the one about whom it is
- 12:00written, "Behold, I send my messenger
- 12:03ahead of you, who will prepare your way
- 12:06before you. I say to you, among those
- 12:10born of women, there is no one greater
- 12:13than John. Yet he who is least in the
- 12:17kingdom of God is greater than he."
- 12:22When all the people and the tax
- 12:24collectors heard this, they acknowledged
- 12:26God's justice, having been baptized with
- 12:29the baptism of John. Or literally, they
- 12:33justified
- 12:35God's ways.
- 12:36They said, "Oh, it was God that we went
- 12:39out there." But the Pharisees and the
- 12:42lawyers rejected God's purpose for
- 12:45themselves,
- 12:47not having been baptized by John. Now
- 12:50you remember that when they went out to
- 12:52be baptized, they wanted to be baptized
- 12:54by John. But John said, "You den of
- 12:57snakes, who warned you to flee the wrath
- 12:59to come, go bear fruits in keeping with
- 13:01repentance and basically then I'll
- 13:04baptize you when you're walking out the
- 13:06change that God is supposedly bringing
- 13:08in your life." They never went back back
- 13:10for the baptism. They went never went
- 13:12back and said, "We repented. Now we're
- 13:15ready. Let's go under." So they didn't
- 13:18get baptized by John. Jesus is saying
- 13:21John was sent by God. John was the voice
- 13:23of repentance. And everybody who was
- 13:25baptized by him when they heard this
- 13:28from Jesus, they're like, "God's ways
- 13:30are good. I'm so glad we went for that
- 13:33baptism. Even though we got disappointed
- 13:35for a few years, even though we thought
- 13:37it was the beginning and then there was
- 13:39a gap, now we understand." The
- 13:41Pharisees, they're like, "No, no, I
- 13:44didn't like that baptism because it
- 13:47required repentance. It required change
- 13:49and we never changed."
- 13:53So, he's saying, "You Pharisees and
- 13:56lawyers, you can't be pleased.
- 14:00You're a bunch of self-absorbed, stuck
- 14:02liars.
- 14:05You say that the reason you didn't
- 14:07accept John is because the way he came,
- 14:10John had a problem. But then I came very
- 14:13different and you didn't respond to that
- 14:15either.
- 14:17So he says, you heard the durge and you
- 14:19heard the flute and you ignored both.
- 14:22You heard the the sad song, but it
- 14:25didn't move you. It didn't stir your
- 14:27heart. and you heard the happy song, but
- 14:30you couldn't dance because nothing is
- 14:32good enough for you. You're too proud.
- 14:35You're too stuck.
- 14:38You're too full of it. Your excuses and
- 14:40your justifications. The bottom line is
- 14:44you're too big. You're too set in your
- 14:48own ways to be responsive to God.
- 14:52But he says, you know, this is a this is
- 14:55a dispute
- 14:57and you can bring all your words, but in
- 14:59the end, wisdom is going to be proven by
- 15:01her children. Those who obeyed are their
- 15:05lives are going to be changed and that's
- 15:08going to prove what God was doing
- 15:10through John and what God was doing
- 15:12through Jesus. What he was doing through
- 15:13the durge and the flute.
- 15:18Now one of the Pharisees was requesting
- 15:20him to dine with him. And he entered the
- 15:23Pharisees house and reclined at the
- 15:25table.
- 15:27And there was a woman
- 15:30in the city who was a sinner, literally
- 15:35an immoral woman,
- 15:38meaning she was a prostitute.
- 15:41She was a sex worker.
- 15:44And when she learned that he was
- 15:45reclining at the table in the Pharisees
- 15:47house, she brought an alabaster vial of
- 15:52perfume.
- 15:55And standing behind him at his feet,
- 15:58weeping,
- 16:00she began to wet his feet with her tears
- 16:03and kept wiping them with the hair of
- 16:05her head and kissing his feet and
- 16:08anointing them with perfume.
- 16:10Now when the Pharisee who had invited
- 16:13him saw this, he said to himself,
- 16:17[snorts]
- 16:17"If this man were a prophet,
- 16:21he would know who and what sort of
- 16:25person this woman is who is touching
- 16:28him, that she is an immoral woman, a
- 16:32sinner."
- 16:36>> [snorts and clears throat]
- 16:37[sighs]
- 16:39>> The different gospels tell us the
- 16:41different responses. One gospel says
- 16:44that the disciples were bothered because
- 16:47this was a costly perfume and they could
- 16:51have sold it. Another gospel tells us it
- 16:54was specifically Judas who was judging
- 16:56him and offended by this. And this
- 16:59gospel tells us it was the Pharisee. So
- 17:02the two people who are deeply offended
- 17:04by this, who are specifically named in
- 17:07the Bible, are Judas and the Pharisee.
- 17:11Judas because he's greedy and he doesn't
- 17:13like the way this costly perfume is
- 17:15being wasted. And the Pharisee because
- 17:19he is proud and he thinks he knows what
- 17:22righteousness is
- 17:24and he doesn't understand the
- 17:26righteousness of God. He doesn't
- 17:28understand the love of God.
- 17:32He doesn't understand. Go and learn what
- 17:34this means. I desire mercy.
- 17:39He doesn't understand that.
- 17:41The woman understands.
- 17:44The woman is coming in not only bringing
- 17:48her shame and her past, but in all
- 17:51likelihood
- 17:53that perfume
- 17:55was what she used to attract attention.
- 17:59that would have been
- 18:01the tool of her trade that would have
- 18:04told people what kind of worker she was.
- 18:09And so she's shattering her whole job.
- 18:13She's destroying that lifestyle.
- 18:17But she's doing it in hope. She's doing
- 18:20it in gratitude. She's doing it as a
- 18:23prayer and a plea. Can I be different?
- 18:26Can I be accepted for something else as
- 18:29something else?
- 18:32And Jesus answers the thoughts that
- 18:34Simon had because Simon didn't say this
- 18:36out loud, but Jesus answers his
- 18:39thoughts.
- 18:41Jesus answered and said to him,"Simon,
- 18:43I have something to say to you."
- 18:47And he replied, "Say it, teacher."
- 18:50So in his heart, he's full of judgment.
- 18:52He's saying Jesus is no prophet.
- 18:56This is terrible. But in his words, say
- 18:59it, teacher. He's full of respect.
- 19:02He's a phony.
- 19:05Simon, I have something to say to you.
- 19:07And he replied,
- 19:09say it, teacher.
- 19:12Jesus says, a money lender had two
- 19:15debtors.
- 19:17One owed 500 dinari
- 19:20and another 50.
- 19:23When they were unable to repay, he
- 19:27graciously forgave them both.
- 19:31So which of them will [clears throat]
- 19:33love him more?
- 19:37Simon answered and said,
- 19:40I suppose the one whom he forgave more.
- 19:45And Jesus said to him, you have judged
- 19:48correctly.
- 19:50Turning toward the woman, he said to
- 19:53Simon,
- 19:55"Do you see this woman?"
- 19:59Simon thought he saw her. Simon thought
- 20:02he saw her so much better than Jesus
- 20:04did, didn't he?
- 20:06Do you see this woman?
- 20:09I entered your house.
- 20:11You gave me no water for my feet, but
- 20:16she has wet my feet with her tears and
- 20:18wiped them with her hair.
- 20:21You gave me no kiss, but she since the
- 20:25time I came in has not ceased to kiss my
- 20:28feet.
- 20:30You did not anoint my head with oil, but
- 20:33she anointed my feet with perfume.
- 20:37For this reason I say to you, her sins
- 20:41which are many have been forgiven her,
- 20:44for she loved much, but he who is
- 20:48forgiven little loves little.
- 20:52Then he said to her, "Your sins have
- 20:55been forgiven."
- 20:57Those who were reclining at the table
- 20:59with him began to say to themselves,
- 21:02"Who is this man [music] who even
- 21:04forgives sins? And he said to the woman,
- 21:08"Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
- 21:14We can safely say that Simon wanted
- 21:18something from [music] Jesus when he
- 21:20asked him to dinner. Simon took a risk.
- 21:24We don't know of another Pharisee who
- 21:26ever invited Jesus [music] to dinner.
- 21:28But Simon got nothing of which he
- 21:32sought.
- 21:34Other gospels tell us that Simon was
- 21:37called Simon the leper. So he apparently
- 21:40was a Pharisee who had been cleansed of
- 21:43leprosy.
- 21:45But he's not as thankful as this woman.
- 21:49His leprosy cleansing must have put a
- 21:53soft spot in his heart toward Jesus.
- 21:56But it was a 50 dinari forgiveness in
- 21:59his view. But the prostitute, the sex
- 22:03worker, she feels like her whole life
- 22:06has been turned around and she can't
- 22:09suppress the gratitude.
- 22:13Do you see the difference?
- 22:15And he who was once a leper is now
- 22:19seeing through people and even seeing
- 22:21through God.
- 22:23He is sitting in judgment of how things
- 22:25are going and wondering why there's such
- 22:29little discernment.
- 22:32And the tragedy is
- 22:35the forgiveness never produce love.
- 22:39But for the woman, it did.
- 22:44Let's make sure that we are not 50
- 22:46dinari Christians. Let's make sure we're
- 22:49500 dinari Christians who remember what
- 22:52we've been forgiven and allow
- 22:54forgiveness from God to turn into love.
- 22:59[music]
