- 0:00Luke 6:1
- 0:03Now it happened that he was passing
- 0:05through some grain fields on a Sabbath,
- 0:08and his disciples were picking the heads
- 0:10of grain, rubbing them in their hands,
- 0:13and eating the grain.
- 0:15But some of the Pharisees said, "Why do
- 0:18you do what is not lawful on the
- 0:21Sabbath?"
- 0:23And Jesus answering them said, "Have you
- 0:26not even read what David did when he was
- 0:29hungry? He and those who were with him?
- 0:33How he entered the house of God and took
- 0:35and ate the consecrated bread which is
- 0:38not lawful for any to eat except the
- 0:41priests alone." And he gave it to his
- 0:44companions.
- 0:46And he was saying to them, "The Son of
- 0:49Man is Lord of the Sabbath." On another
- 0:53Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and
- 0:55was teaching, and there was a man there
- 0:58whose right hand was withered. The
- 1:00scribes and the Pharisees were watching
- 1:02him closely to see if he healed on the
- 1:06Sabbath, so that they might find reason
- 1:08to accuse him.
- 1:11And he knew what they were thinking. And
- 1:14he said to the man with the withered
- 1:16hand, "Get up and come forward." And he
- 1:20got up and came forward. And Jesus said
- 1:23to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do
- 1:27good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to
- 1:30save a life or to destroy it?" After
- 1:34looking around at them all, he said to
- 1:36him, "Stretch out your hand?" And he did
- 1:39so. And his hand was restored. But they
- 1:43themselves were filled with rage and
- 1:46discussed together what they might do to
- 1:50Jesus.
- 1:52I've discussed this more fully in
- 1:54Matthew's gospel, but let's just point
- 1:58out that
- 2:00the Pharisees came against Jesus for how
- 2:03he violated their view of the Sabbath
- 2:07more than anything else.
- 2:10But they did not understand that resting
- 2:14on the seventh day
- 2:17was pointing toward a time when we would
- 2:20let God work through us. When we would
- 2:23cease from what we could do in our own
- 2:26carnal minds and our own carnal strength
- 2:30and God would work through us by his
- 2:33spirit, by his grace. And that's what
- 2:36the Sabbath was pointing toward. It was
- 2:39pointing toward a day when men could be
- 2:42more than what they were without God and
- 2:45God could work in them to will and do
- 2:48his good pleasure. The writer of Hebrews
- 2:51tells us that
- 2:53the Sabbath is when we cease from our
- 2:56works just as God ceased from his in the
- 3:01creation of the world. That's the
- 3:03Sabbath. It's ceasing from what we can
- 3:05do in our own strength.
- 3:08So Jesus was a living, breathing, acting
- 3:13Sabbath everywhere he went. He was Lord
- 3:16of the Sabbath. Why? Because he did
- 3:19nothing on his own strength. He did
- 3:22nothing except what he heard the father
- 3:24doing.
- 3:26He said, "I do nothing of my own
- 3:28initiative." So his whole life was a
- 3:30Sabbath.
- 3:32And when he worked by the power of the
- 3:34spirit, he was especially operating in
- 3:37the Sabbath of God's rest because he
- 3:40wasn't doing what flesh could do. He was
- 3:43doing only what God could do through
- 3:46him. So when he performed a miracle that
- 3:49was ceasing from human works and that
- 3:52was entering into the works of God.
- 3:54Jesus would later say, "My father is
- 3:58always working." So the key is not to
- 4:01cease from all works, but to cease from
- 4:04our works, and to enter into those works
- 4:07that God is doing, not of the flesh, not
- 4:11of the muscle and will of man, but of
- 4:14the grace and spirit of God. And so they
- 4:17are offended at him for breaking the
- 4:19Sabbath. And they don't understand that
- 4:21to heal someone is to fulfill the
- 4:24Sabbath. It's to enter into the grace of
- 4:27God.
- 4:28So he gives them this equation. He says,
- 4:31"Is it lawful to do good or to do evil
- 4:35on the Sabbath, to save a life or to
- 4:38kill on the Sabbath?" Is that the
- 4:41equation that they had in their minds?
- 4:43They thought it was healing or doing
- 4:45nothing. But Jesus is clearly saying
- 4:48that if you don't act when God's given
- 4:51you the power and the grace to act, you
- 4:54are sinning through inaction.
- 4:57So sins of omission, omitting what you
- 5:01should do, those are as evil as sins of
- 5:03commission, doing what you shouldn't do.
- 5:06James would say to him who knows to do
- 5:08good and does it not, to him it is sin.
- 5:12So he is saying, if I were like you and
- 5:15I refuse to help this man, I would be
- 5:18committing sin. And he's saying that
- 5:20would be breaking the Sabbath.
- 5:23So the Sabbath is not about a certain
- 5:26day. It's not about a certain time of
- 5:29day at sunset. It's about coming into a
- 5:33life where we can say with Paul, by the
- 5:37grace of God, I am what I am. And his
- 5:39grace toward me did not prove vain. For
- 5:42I worked harder than them all, but it
- 5:44was not I, but the grace of God that was
- 5:47in me. That's Sabbath. Sabbath is when
- 5:51we can fulfill Jesus's promise that when
- 5:54we are brought before rulers and kings,
- 5:57do not worry about what you will say or
- 5:59how you will say it. For in that very
- 6:01hour, my father will give you what to
- 6:03say and it will not be you saying it.
- 6:06That's Sabbath. when God is working
- 6:09through us. But when we suppress that
- 6:12that grace of his work through us, then
- 6:15we are violating the Sabbath in the
- 6:17worst way. Because the Sabbath ritual
- 6:20was a shadow of the Sabbath life and the
- 6:23Sabbath life was lived by Jesus every
- 6:25single day.
- 6:29It was at this time that he went off to
- 6:31the mountain to pray and he spent the
- 6:33whole night in prayer to God. And when
- 6:36day came, he called his disciples to him
- 6:39and chose 12 of them whom he also named
- 6:42as apostles.
- 6:45The word apostle means sent and it means
- 6:48sent with authority.
- 6:52Simon, whom he had named Peter, and
- 6:55Andrew his brother, and James and John,
- 6:57and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew
- 7:00and Thomas, James the son of Alfus, and
- 7:04Simon, who was called the Zealot, Judas
- 7:06the son of James, and Judas a Scariot,
- 7:09who became a traitor.
- 7:12Jesus came down with them and stood on a
- 7:14level place. And there was a large crowd
- 7:17of his disciples and a great throng of
- 7:21people from all Judea and Jerusalem and
- 7:24the coastal region of Ty and Siden who
- 7:27had come to hear him and to be healed of
- 7:30their diseases.
- 7:32And those who were troubled with unclean
- 7:34spirits were being cured, and all the
- 7:37people were trying to touch him, for
- 7:39power was coming from him and healing
- 7:42them all.
- 7:45And turning his gaze toward his
- 7:46disciples, he began to say, "Blessed are
- 7:50you who are poor, for yours is the
- 7:53kingdom of God. Blessed are you who
- 7:56hunger,
- 7:58for you shall be satisfied.
- 8:01Blessed are you who weep, for you shall
- 8:04laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you
- 8:07and ostracize you and insult you and
- 8:12scorn your name as evil for the sake of
- 8:14the Son of Man. Be glad in that day and
- 8:18leap for joy. For behold, your reward is
- 8:22great in heaven. For in the same way
- 8:25their fathers used to treat the
- 8:27prophets. But woe to you who are rich,
- 8:31for you are receiving your comfort in
- 8:33full. Woe to you who are well-fed now,
- 8:37for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who
- 8:40laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
- 8:43Woe to you when all men speak well of
- 8:46you, for their fathers used to treat the
- 8:49false prophets in the same way. But I
- 8:53say to you who hear, "Love your enemies.
- 8:56Do good to those who hate you. Bless
- 8:59those who curse you. Pray for those who
- 9:02mistreat you. Whoever hits you on the
- 9:05cheek, offer him the other also. And
- 9:08whoever takes away your coat, do not
- 9:10withhold your shirt from him either.
- 9:12Give to everyone who asks of you. And
- 9:15whoever takes away what is yours, do not
- 9:18demand it back. Treat others the same
- 9:21way you want them to treat you.
- 9:25If you love those who love you, what
- 9:28credit is that to you? For even sinners
- 9:31love those who love them.
- 9:34If you do good to those who do good to
- 9:36you, what credit is that to you? For
- 9:38even sinners do the same. If you lend to
- 9:42those from whom you expect to receive,
- 9:44what credit is that to you? Even sinners
- 9:47lend to sinners in order to receive back
- 9:50the same amount.
- 9:53But love your enemies and do good and
- 9:55lend and expect nothing in return. and
- 9:59your reward will be great, and you will
- 10:02be sons of the most high, for he himself
- 10:06is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Be
- 10:10merciful, just as your father is
- 10:12merciful. Do not judge and you will not
- 10:15be judged. Do not condemn and you will
- 10:17not be condemned. Pardon, and you will
- 10:20be pardoned. Give and it will be given
- 10:23to you. They will pour into your lap a
- 10:26good measure. pressed down, shaken
- 10:28together, and running over. For by your
- 10:32standard of measure, it will be measured
- 10:34to you in return. This is Luke's
- 10:37condensed version of the biatitudes, but
- 10:40it's the same message that we find in
- 10:42the others.
- 10:44He says, "Blessed are you when you're
- 10:46poor." This word blessed means thankful,
- 10:51exceedingly happy, overjoyed.
- 10:54Blessed are you when you are poor. And
- 10:56the word poor means bankrupt, ruined.
- 11:00He's saying when all
- 11:04of this world has become bankruptcy to
- 11:07you, when all that you were striving for
- 11:10and all the false riches of a false
- 11:13world have failed you, you can be happy
- 11:16because that can be the starting place
- 11:19of you becoming fulfilled and happy in
- 11:22God.
- 11:23Blessed are you when you hunger, for you
- 11:26will be satisfied.
- 11:28What he's saying is the people in this
- 11:31world who've lost their hunger won't
- 11:32find God. But the people in this world
- 11:35who can be dissatisfied with the things
- 11:38of this world will find God. He says,
- 11:41"Blessed are you when men hate you and
- 11:44ostracize you and insult you and scorn
- 11:49your name as evil." This is what we're
- 11:53This is what's going to happen to
- 11:54Christians. They're going to be hated.
- 11:58They're going to be ostracized. That
- 12:00means excluded, pushed out of the circle
- 12:04of acceptance.
- 12:08They're going to be insulted.
- 12:10You're a cult. You're weird.
- 12:14You believe falsehoods
- 12:17and scorn your name. Oh my, you're part
- 12:22of such and such. You belong to that. Oh
- 12:26my goodness.
- 12:28Have you ever felt people scorn your
- 12:30name, ostracize you? You will you will
- 12:34feel those things. They will insult you,
- 12:37they will hate you. But in that moment,
- 12:40Jesus is saying there's a blessing.
- 12:43Don't miss it.
- 12:45Stop and ask why. Why is this happening?
- 12:49What does this mean?
- 12:52There's a blessing in that. He says, "Be
- 12:55glad in that day and leap for joy. Go
- 13:00running across the yard and jump up and
- 13:04praise God. For behold, your reward is
- 13:08great in heaven." He's saying in that
- 13:11day of pain, in that day of rejection,
- 13:14in that day of hatred and insult, let
- 13:17something rise up in your heart that
- 13:20says, "Wait a minute. I'm being counted
- 13:24with the righteous. I'm being counted
- 13:27with Jesus."
- 13:29Because this is how they treated him.
- 13:33And he says, "Woe to you who are rich,
- 13:37for you are receiving your comfort in
- 13:38full." People who put their blessing in
- 13:42riches, who think that that's the
- 13:44measure of life's joy and success, it's
- 13:47going to be a curse. It's going to be a
- 13:48woe because there's no more comfort
- 13:51coming. This is about relationship with
- 13:54God and each other. This isn't about
- 13:56things. It's not about money.
- 14:00And then he says this one, "Woe to you
- 14:03when all men speak well of you. If you
- 14:07don't have enemies, you're a fraud. If
- 14:09you don't have enemies, you're not part
- 14:11of Jesus. You're not with him. Woe to
- 14:15you when all men speak well of you."
- 14:17Because he says that's the way they
- 14:19treated a very specific kind of group,
- 14:22the false prophets.
- 14:25If you don't have enemies, if you don't
- 14:27have people who call you false, who hate
- 14:30you, who insult you, who ostracize you,
- 14:34then that is a proof to you that you are
- 14:37part of the false prophets.
- 14:40But I say to you
- 14:42who hear,
- 14:44love your enemies.
- 14:47And he begins to tell us how we should
- 14:49treat people exactly opposite as we
- 14:52automatically treat them. Why? Why? So
- 14:56that we would be sons of our father. The
- 14:59implication is I'm going to show you how
- 15:02your father treats people. And if you
- 15:05can treat people like that, you can be
- 15:07part of him. So your father
- 15:11loves his enemies.
- 15:13When did our father love his enemies?
- 15:17God was in Christ reconciling the world
- 15:20to himself. When when we were yet
- 15:22sinners, when we were hostile in our
- 15:26minds through evil works, God came and
- 15:30loved us in Jesus. He loved his enemies.
- 15:36Do good to those who hate you. Bless
- 15:39those who curse you. When did our father
- 15:41bless those who cursed him? God in
- 15:44Christ said, "Father, forgive them for
- 15:47they know not what they are doing.
- 15:51Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him
- 15:54the other also. When did God give his
- 15:57cheek to the one who struck him? Do you
- 16:00remember with Jesus? They pulled out his
- 16:03beard. They struck him with a reed on
- 16:06the head. And it says in Isaiah, he gave
- 16:09his cheek to the one who struck him.
- 16:13Give to everyone who asks of you.
- 16:16Whoever takes away what is yours, do not
- 16:19demand it back. Did they take away his
- 16:21clothes? Did they take away his honor?
- 16:25Did they strip him of his dignity? And
- 16:28did he say, "Give that back to me?" No.
- 16:31He had the power to call 12 legions of
- 16:33angels. But he didn't. He never used his
- 16:37power to protect himself. He used his
- 16:41power to love and free us. Treat others
- 16:45the way you want them to treat you.
- 16:49Don't focus on how they're treating you.
- 16:51Don't focus on how wrong this is. People
- 16:55are going to treat you wrong. You're
- 16:57going to give of your time. And people
- 16:59are going to walk away and act like it
- 17:01came from them. You're going to give of
- 17:04your ideas. You're going to give of your
- 17:06heart and soul. And some people are
- 17:08going to walk away and not thank you and
- 17:12not reward you. Don't focus on what
- 17:14you're losing. Say, "How do I want
- 17:18people to treat me? That's how I'm going
- 17:20to treat others." Be the change you want
- 17:23to receive from others. That's what he's
- 17:26saying. Be the change you want to get
- 17:29from others.
- 17:32Every time you feel hurt, every time you
- 17:33feel wounded, every time you want to get
- 17:35offended at the way people don't love
- 17:37you, you just turn that around and say,
- 17:40"God, help me to love in the way I want
- 17:42to be loved. Be merciful." And then he
- 17:46pulls it back into the father. He says,
- 17:49"Love your enemies." It's the second
- 17:51time he said it. Love your enemies and
- 17:55do good and lend expecting nothing in
- 18:01return. There's a way of loving people
- 18:03where you're hoping I think I'll get
- 18:06something big if I do this. I think
- 18:09they'll appreciate me and I need that.
- 18:12But then there's a way of loving where
- 18:13you say, "God, I am expecting nothing in
- 18:16return, but because of how you loved me,
- 18:20I am going to love expecting nothing in
- 18:23return."
- 18:25Love your enemies and do good and lend
- 18:27expecting nothing in return. and your
- 18:31reward will be great and you will be
- 18:35sons of the most high for he himself is
- 18:40kind to ungrateful
- 18:44and evil men.
- 18:47God sends rain on the just and on the
- 18:51unjust alike. He is kind. He gives us
- 18:54chances. He gives us forgiveness. He
- 18:57gives us mercy. And if we want to be
- 18:59like him, we have to give expecting
- 19:03nothing in return.
- 19:05Then he says it again, be merciful just
- 19:08as your father is merciful.
- 19:11Do not judge and you will not be judged.
- 19:14So the biatitudes are not about how to
- 19:17be superior than everybody else. The
- 19:20biatitudes are a lesson on how to be
- 19:23like God. They are a penetrating
- 19:26terrifying insight into how we treat God
- 19:30and how he loves us. And that's why
- 19:35Matthew says, "Be perfect as your father
- 19:37in heaven is perfect." Which is simply
- 19:39to say, "Love people who don't
- 19:44reciprocate your love.
- 19:46Love people when they are unlovable."
- 19:51That's perfection.
- 19:54And he spoke a parable to them. A blind
- 19:56man cannot guide a blind man, can he?
- 20:00Will they not both fall into a pit? A
- 20:03pupil is not above his teacher. But
- 20:06everyone, after he has been fully
- 20:09trained, will be like his teacher.
- 20:13Why do you look at the speck that is in
- 20:16your brother's eye, but do not notice
- 20:18the log that is in your own eye?
- 20:22Or how can you say to your brother,
- 20:24"Brother, let me take out the speck
- 20:27that is in your eye when you yourself do
- 20:31not see the log that is in your own eye.
- 20:35You hypocrite. First take the log out of
- 20:38your own eye, and then you will see
- 20:40clearly to take out the speck that is in
- 20:44your brother's eye.
- 20:47For there is no good tree which produces
- 20:50bad fruit, nor on the other hand a bad
- 20:53tree which produces good fruit. For each
- 20:56tree is known by its fruit. For men do
- 20:59not gather figs from thorns, nor do they
- 21:02pick grapes from a brier bush. That's a
- 21:05tongue twister.
- 21:07The good man out of the good treasure of
- 21:09his heart brings forth what is good. And
- 21:11the evil man out of the evil treasure
- 21:14brings forth what is evil. for his mouth
- 21:17speaks from that which fills his heart.
- 21:22Okay. So, how does this parable relate
- 21:25to the biatitudes?
- 21:27He starts by telling us we're supposed
- 21:29to be like our father. So, does that
- 21:31sound like a guide to you? Huh? Love
- 21:36like your father loves. Be perfect like
- 21:38your father's perfect. Forgive like your
- 21:40father forgives.
- 21:42Okay. But then he says he told them a
- 21:45parable. A blind man cannot guide a
- 21:49blind man. You say, okay, how does this
- 21:52relate to the biatitudes? Who's the
- 21:54blind man and who is he guiding?
- 21:58Well, what he's saying is don't take
- 22:02other people as your measure of love
- 22:06when those people are blind.
- 22:10You're like, "Oh, well, who is that
- 22:11person who shouldn't be a guide? It's
- 22:14me. It's you."
- 22:18Because who what are we blinded by? We
- 22:21are blinded by the log in our eye.
- 22:25He says, "You think you're somebody
- 22:28else's guide because you go and tell
- 22:31them how to get the speck out of their
- 22:32eye, but you are blinded by the log
- 22:36protruding out of your own eye. You
- 22:39don't know how to love. His whole point
- 22:42is you're not the standard of love.
- 22:48God is the standard of love. If you say,
- 22:52"I know how to teach someone to love."
- 22:55Look, that person has a problem in their
- 22:58life. Let me go pull the speck out of
- 22:59their life, out of their eye.
- 23:02You don't see the log that is in your
- 23:04own eye.
- 23:05You don't see how blind you are to
- 23:08people's needs. You don't see how you're
- 23:10a unicorn knocking people over with the
- 23:13protruding judgment that is coming out
- 23:15of your head.
- 23:17Amen. You're the blind guide. I'm the
- 23:19blind guide. And we have to let God take
- 23:23the beam of judgment out of our eye so
- 23:27that we can see clearly. not to give
- 23:30them our standard of love, but to give
- 23:33them God's standard of love.
- 23:38And then he says, "There is no good tree
- 23:40that produces bad fruit."
- 23:43So what does what is this bad fruit
- 23:47refer to? Does that mean that you have a
- 23:51tree full of love, but you've got one,
- 23:54you know, a tree full of good peaches,
- 23:56but there's one peach that that went
- 23:58rotten. Is that what that means? Oops. A
- 24:01bird got one of my peaches. I'm a
- 24:03failure.
- 24:04Is that what it means?
- 24:07Jesus teaches us the difference between
- 24:10good fruit and bad fruit. It's not
- 24:12whether you have a ton of peaches and
- 24:14one peach went bad. We're all failures.
- 24:17We all make mistakes. It's whether you
- 24:21are supposed to be a grape vine, but
- 24:25briars are growing on you. It's whether
- 24:28you are supposed to be a fig tree, but
- 24:31thistles and thorns are growing on you.
- 24:34So, the fruit that he's talking about is
- 24:36a a question of kind,
- 24:39not a question of whether a fig rotted,
- 24:42but whether a thistle grew instead of a
- 24:44fig. So, what would the thistle be on
- 24:47the fig tree if he's ministering to us
- 24:50about love and he's telling us we don't
- 24:52know how to love like the father? What
- 24:55would the thistle be? It would be
- 24:57judgment.
- 25:01It would be criticism.
- 25:03It would be unforgiveness.
- 25:06It would be pride. He's telling us don't
- 25:09start growing thistles. Don't start
- 25:12growing thorns.
- 25:14Don't start developing
- 25:16rationalizations.
- 25:18Don't start fostering and producing from
- 25:21your life these thorns, these hurts,
- 25:27these ways of
- 25:29stabbing and disappointing and hurting
- 25:32others. Why do you call me Lord, Lord,
- 25:36and do not what I say?
- 25:39Everyone who comes to me and hears my
- 25:41word and acts on them, I will show you
- 25:45whom he is like. He is like a man
- 25:48building a house who dug deep and laid a
- 25:51foundation on the rock. And when a flood
- 25:54occurred, the torrent burst against that
- 25:57house and could not shake it because it
- 26:00had been well built. But one who has
- 26:03heard and has not acted accordingly is
- 26:06like a man who built a house on the
- 26:08ground without any foundation and the
- 26:12torrent burst against it and immediately
- 26:15it collapsed and the ruin of that house
- 26:18was great.
- 26:21So here we have the biatitudes tell us
- 26:24how we should live. The blind guide
- 26:27warns us that we cannot be our own
- 26:30measure. We cannot guide others until
- 26:33we've had the beam of our judgments
- 26:35removed and we can see like God sees
- 26:38others through the eyes of love. And
- 26:41then the foundations parable tells us
- 26:44that if we just hear him and we don't
- 26:47act on what he says, then we're not
- 26:48letting him be our guide. We are
- 26:51building houses that are going to
- 26:53collapse. We're thinking we're
- 26:55different. We're thinking we're saved.
- 26:57We're thinking we're Christians, but we
- 26:59are building on sand. Only if we act on
- 27:03his word. If we start forgiving, if we
- 27:06start if we start lending, expecting
- 27:08nothing in return, if we start turning
- 27:11the other cheek, if we start rejoicing
- 27:13in our pain, only then are we acting on
- 27:17his word. Only then are we letting him
- 27:19be the guide as the beam is cast out and
- 27:23we're starting to walk in the light of
- 27:25his love.
