- 0:00Luke [music] chapter 4. In the previous
- 0:03chapter, Luke gave us the entire
- 0:06genealogy of Jesus from Adam to himself.
- 0:11And now he's going to show us that Jesus
- 0:14was not just a man, although it is
- 0:17critical that he was a human being in
- 0:19order to come and do what only a man
- 0:21could do. In the in the same way though,
- 0:24he's going to stress how submitted he
- 0:27was to the indwelling divine spirit in
- 0:32him.
- 0:34Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned
- 0:38from the Jordan and was led around by
- 0:41the spirit in the wilderness for 40
- 0:43days, being tempted by the devil. And he
- 0:47ate nothing during those days. And when
- 0:49they had ended, he became hungry. And
- 0:52the devil said to him, "If you are the
- 0:55son of God, tell this stone to become
- 0:58bread." And Jesus answered him, "It is
- 1:02written, man shall not live on bread
- 1:04alone."
- 1:06And he led him up and showed him all the
- 1:08kingdoms of the world in a moment of
- 1:10time. And the devil said to him,"I will
- 1:14give you all this domain and its glory,
- 1:17for it has been handed over to me, and I
- 1:20give it to whomever I wish. Therefore,
- 1:23if you worship before me, it shall be
- 1:26yours." Jesus answered him, "It [music]
- 1:29is written, you shall worship the Lord
- 1:31your God and serve him only." And he led
- 1:34him to Jerusalem and had him stand on
- 1:37the pinnacle of the temple and said to
- 1:38him, "If you are the son of God, throw
- 1:41yourself down from here. For it is
- 1:43written, I will command my angels
- 1:45concerning you to guard you." And on
- 1:48their hands they will bear you up so
- 1:51that you will not strike your foot
- 1:52against a stone. And Jesus answered and
- 1:55said to him, "It is said, you shall not
- 1:58put the Lord your God to the test." When
- 2:01the devil had finished every temptation,
- 2:04he left him until an opportune time.
- 2:07So in the previous chapter, Luke really
- 2:11emphasizes that Jesus is the son of
- 2:14Adam.
- 2:16And that means that Jesus is going to
- 2:17come and do what Adam failed to do.
- 2:22And I said that he was going to be
- 2:24tempted just like Adam was tempted. Now,
- 2:27the betrayal that Adam committed in the
- 2:30Garden of Eden was that he was made in
- 2:33the image and glory of God. And it was
- 2:37God's will that the relationship between
- 2:41the heavenly father and the earthly son
- 2:44would allow God's grace and dominion to
- 2:47flow through Adam in the tending and
- 2:50care of the earth and the people that
- 2:53were going to live on it. But instead,
- 2:57Adam subverted that relationship and
- 3:00took the dominion God had given him and
- 3:03brought himself under obedience and
- 3:05dominion to God's archeneemy, the devil.
- 3:09So now Jesus is going to encounter the
- 3:12devil. And the devil's going to try to
- 3:14do with Jesus exactly what he did with
- 3:16Adam.
- 3:18And he's going to test, are you going to
- 3:20be God's son or are you going to become
- 3:24my tool like Adam did?
- 3:27Do you understand? So that's how the
- 3:29devil is treating him. But Jesus is in
- 3:33complete submission to the Holy Spirit.
- 3:36So Luke emphasizes Jesus full of the
- 3:39Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan. He
- 3:41was led by the spirit into the
- 3:43wilderness. And when he gets there, he
- 3:47eats nothing. He's depriving himself. So
- 3:50the fall in Eden begins with eating,
- 3:53doesn't it? It begins with putting your
- 3:56needs first. It begins with putting
- 3:59appetite higher than it should be. And
- 4:02so Jesus's ministry begins with eating
- 4:04nothing for 40 days to to acknowledge
- 4:07and testify, I am not going to be
- 4:11controlled by my appetites.
- 4:14And there, even though he's not eating,
- 4:17the devil comes to him and he he says,
- 4:21"If you are the son of God, tell the
- 4:24stone to become bread." So he says, "If
- 4:27you're the son of God, use the powers
- 4:30that God has given you to serve
- 4:32yourself."
- 4:34And as I've said before, Jesus never
- 4:37used his power to protect or provide for
- 4:40himself. His power was always outturned
- 4:44in service of others and in obedience to
- 4:47a bigger picture and a bigger will from
- 4:49God. So the devil's saying, "You're
- 4:52hungry. You're needy. Serve yourself.
- 4:56Make this about you. Forget that you are
- 4:59here to bear the image and glory of your
- 5:01father."
- 5:04And Jesus responds by invoking the word
- 5:08of God. He doesn't argue with him. He
- 5:10doesn't reason. He doesn't discuss it
- 5:12with someone else like Adam and Eve did.
- 5:15You see, Eve fell because she was
- 5:17willing to have the conversation with
- 5:19the devil and she needed to shut him
- 5:21down with the word of God. That's what
- 5:23Jesus is doing.
- 5:25So then the devil takes him and shows
- 5:27him all the kingdoms of the world in a
- 5:29moment of time.
- 5:32Okay, here we go. Jesus is here to take
- 5:35back something from the devil. Is he
- 5:37here to take back all the kingdoms and
- 5:40political systems of the world? No. He's
- 5:43here to take back the human soul. He's
- 5:46here to take back human faith. He's here
- 5:49to take back those who bear not the
- 5:52image of Caesar on a coin, but those who
- 5:54bear the image of God. He's here to take
- 5:57back us. So, he's not interested in the
- 6:00kingdoms of this world. The devil shows
- 6:02him all the kingdoms of this world and
- 6:04he says,"I will give you all this
- 6:07domain." He knows that Jesus is here to
- 6:10take control back that Adam gave him. So
- 6:14he says, "Isn't this what you want?
- 6:16Don't you want these nations? Don't you
- 6:18want these political powers? I will give
- 6:20you all this domain and its glory."
- 6:25There's his counterfeit glory. Jesus is
- 6:28living for the glory of his father. He
- 6:30was made in the image and glory of God.
- 6:33Right? But the devil says, "I've got a
- 6:35counterfeit glory. I'll give you all of
- 6:37these these kingdoms, these political
- 6:39nations, and their glory, for it has
- 6:43been handed over to me." Who handed it
- 6:46over to him? Adam, Jesus's natural
- 6:50father, but not his spiritual father.
- 6:54And I give it to whomever I wish. This
- 6:58is quite a statement and it's the truth.
- 7:01Every system built on the threat of
- 7:04death is a system that Satan has
- 7:07ultimate control over.
- 7:09He holds people in bondage all their
- 7:11lifetime through the fear of death. He
- 7:14has the power of death. That is the
- 7:16devil. This is what Hebrews tells us.
- 7:19Therefore, if you worship me, literally,
- 7:22if you just bow down before me, if
- 7:25you'll just acknowledge,
- 7:27if you'll submit yourself to me and do
- 7:31it my way, I'll give you all this glory
- 7:34that I've been covetous of
- 7:37from the beginning." Jesus answers, "It
- 7:40is written, you shall worship the Lord
- 7:42your God and serve him only."
- 7:46So it's not just bending the knee. It's
- 7:49a service. I'm not going to become a
- 7:52tool in your system, Satan, because I am
- 7:55serving and bowing to another king.
- 7:59And then he takes him to Jerusalem,
- 8:01the temple, which by this point had
- 8:05ceased to be a a a legitimate expression
- 8:09of the other kingdom. And it had become
- 8:11an expression of Herod's power. It had
- 8:13become an expression of controlling
- 8:15people. And he's saying, "Throw yourself
- 8:18down from here. Use your power."
- 8:24And he says, "You shall not put the Lord
- 8:26your God to the test.
- 8:29You, it's not my place to coers God to
- 8:33do what I need or what I want." Jesus is
- 8:36saying, "It's my place to find his will
- 8:38and live for it."
- 8:42And Jesus returned to Galilee in the
- 8:45power of the spirit. So he came up from
- 8:48the Jordan in the power of the spirit.
- 8:49He was led by the spirit into the
- 8:51wilderness. He answers the devil with
- 8:54the truth of the spirit. And now verse
- 8:5714. And Jesus returned to Galilee in the
- 9:00power of the spirit. He left in the
- 9:02power of the spirit. He dealt with the
- 9:05devil. And he came back in the power of
- 9:07the spirit. He didn't come back having
- 9:09blown it. He didn't come back having
- 9:12compromised.
- 9:15And news about him spread through all
- 9:17the surrounding district. And he began
- 9:19teaching in their synagogues and was
- 9:21praised by all. And he came to Nazareth
- 9:25where he had been brought up. And as was
- 9:28his custom, he entered the synagogue on
- 9:30the Sabbath and stood up to read. And
- 9:33the book of the prophet Isaiah was
- 9:36handed to him. And he opened the book
- 9:39and found the place where it was
- 9:40written, "The spirit of the Lord is upon
- 9:44me."
- 9:46Because he anointed me to preach the
- 9:49gospel to the poor. He sent me to
- 9:52proclaim release to the captives and
- 9:55recovery of sight to the blind, to set
- 9:58free those who are oppressed, to
- 10:01proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.
- 10:04This is what Jesus came to take back.
- 10:09He came to take back the poor who've
- 10:13been oppressed. He came to take back the
- 10:16prisoners who are in chains. He came to
- 10:19take back the blind who are confused and
- 10:22deceived. He came to take back the
- 10:25oppressed
- 10:27by sin and to declare that slavery is
- 10:31over and this is the year of Jubilee.
- 10:34And how can he do this? How can he take
- 10:37all this back? Because the spirit of the
- 10:40Lord is upon him. So he came from the
- 10:44Jordan in the power of the spirit. He
- 10:46went into the wilderness in the power of
- 10:47the spirit. He returned in the power of
- 10:49the spirit. And he goes into church on
- 10:51the first Sabbath and opens the
- 10:52scripture and says, "The spirit is upon
- 10:54me." This is how he's going to take it
- 10:57back. This is fulfilling what John said
- 10:59in the previous chapter. One is coming
- 11:02after me who will baptize you with the
- 11:04Holy Spirit and fire.
- 11:07And as he closed the book, he gave it
- 11:09back to the attendant and sat down. And
- 11:12the eyes of all the synagogue were fixed
- 11:14on him.
- 11:16And he began to say to them, "Today
- 11:20this scripture has been fulfilled in
- 11:23your hearing." And all were speaking
- 11:26well of him and wondering at the
- 11:29gracious words which were falling from
- 11:32his lips.
- 11:34And they were saying, "Is this not
- 11:38Joseph's son?"
- 11:41And he said to them, "No doubt you will
- 11:43quote this proverb to me. Physician,
- 11:46heal yourself.
- 11:48Whatever we heard was done at Capernium,
- 11:51do here in your hometown as well." And
- 11:54he said, "Truly I say to you, no prophet
- 11:57is welcome in his hometown."
- 12:00But I say to you in truth that there
- 12:03were many widows in Israel in the days
- 12:06of Elijah when the sky was shut up for 3
- 12:09years and 6 months when a great famine
- 12:12came over all the land. And yet Elijah
- 12:15was sent to none of them but only to
- 12:21Zerapath in the land of Siden to a woman
- 12:25who was a widow. And there were many
- 12:28lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha
- 12:31the prophet. And none of them were
- 12:33cleansed, but only non the Syrian.
- 12:38So he has come into his hometown and
- 12:41he's begun to preach and they are
- 12:44dazzled by his anointing. What gracious
- 12:47words are falling from his lips. Wow.
- 12:52But then that little competitive spirit
- 12:55of familiarity that breeds contempt
- 12:58starts working in their minds and they
- 13:00say, "Isn't he Joseph's son? Aren't his
- 13:04brothers and sisters here with us? Let's
- 13:07shrink him down to something we can
- 13:09understand and screw the lid back on.
- 13:12Let's not get too carried away with
- 13:14faith here."
- 13:16And he tells them they're going to one
- 13:18day say, "Position, heal yourself."
- 13:21Which is what they said at the cross.
- 13:24He tells them they're going to say to
- 13:26him, "Perform the works here in Nazareth
- 13:28that you did in Capernium. Show it off.
- 13:31Tell us. Let us see it." And he says, "A
- 13:36prophet is welcomed everywhere but in
- 13:38his hometown."
- 13:40And he tells them just like in the days
- 13:41of Elijah where there were many widows
- 13:44but Elijah was sent to a foreign widow
- 13:47and just like in the days of Elisha when
- 13:49there were many lepers in the community
- 13:51of Israel but only a foreigner was
- 13:55healed. He's saying my hometown isn't
- 13:58going to get the grace of God because
- 14:01you don't have honor because you don't
- 14:03have faith. You're not going to be able
- 14:06to see and receive what you hoped for.
- 14:12And all the people in the synagogue were
- 14:14filled with rage as they heard these
- 14:18things.
- 14:20And they got up and drove him out of the
- 14:23city and led him to the brow of the hill
- 14:26on which their city had been built in
- 14:29order to throw him down the cliff.
- 14:35But passing through their midst,
- 14:38he went his way.
- 14:40And he came down to Capernaum, a city of
- 14:44Galilee, and he was teaching them on the
- 14:46Sabbath. And they were amazed at his
- 14:49teaching, for his message was with
- 14:52authority.
- 14:53In the synagogue, there was a man
- 14:56possessed by the spirit of an unclean
- 14:58demon, and he cried out with a loud
- 15:00voice, "Let us alone. What business do
- 15:03we have with each other, Jesus of
- 15:05Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I
- 15:09know who you are, the Holy One of God.
- 15:12But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet
- 15:15and come out of him." [clears throat]
- 15:17And when the demon had thrown him down
- 15:19in the midst of the people, he came out
- 15:21of him without doing him any harm. And
- 15:24amazement came upon them all. And they
- 15:27began talking with one another, saying,
- 15:30"What is this message? For with
- 15:33authority and power he commands the
- 15:36unclean spirits, and they come out and
- 15:39the report about him was spreading into
- 15:41every locality in the surrounding
- 15:44district." So here we have a stark
- 15:47juiposition, a contrast. We have one
- 15:50Sabbath,
- 15:52two meetings, two church services. In
- 15:55one service, they're amazed at his
- 15:58preaching until he says, "The scripture
- 16:01is fulfilled today. We're not
- 16:03speculating and commenting on past Bible
- 16:06stories. God is doing something today."
- 16:09And then they got offended and they
- 16:11started saying, "Wait a minute. We know
- 16:12who you are. You're one of us." and
- 16:15their familiarity
- 16:17caused them to lose all of their honor.
- 16:21And he was saying,"I wasn't sent to you
- 16:24because I'm sent to the honoring like
- 16:27Elijah was sent to the widow and Elisha
- 16:31sent to non. I'm not sent to you." So
- 16:33they try to kill him there in Nazareth.
- 16:35Bring him to the brow of a cliff and he
- 16:37passes right through them because his
- 16:39time hadn't come. And where does he go
- 16:41on the same Sabbath? He goes down to
- 16:43Capernaum and he walks into their
- 16:45Sabbath meeting and he has the miracle
- 16:47that couldn't happen in Nazareth.
- 16:50A man is delivered of a demon and the
- 16:52word and promise and hope start
- 16:54spreading everywhere. But in his
- 16:55hometown,
- 16:57it couldn't happen. They couldn't see
- 16:59the miracle because it was too close to
- 17:01home.
- 17:04They couldn't see the anointing because
- 17:06they knew who his family was.
- 17:08and they couldn't receive the
- 17:10fulfillment [music] and the deliverance.
- 17:13They couldn't be part of the
- 17:14deliverance. They stayed in their
- 17:16prison. They stayed in their poverty.
- 17:18They stayed in their blindness.
- 17:22And they didn't partake of the jubilee.
- 17:25Even though the spirit of the Lord was
- 17:26upon him because they were too stuck up
- 17:28in their head, in their pride,
- 17:32he wasn't sent to them. Then he got up
- 17:35and left the synagogue and entered
- 17:37Simon's home. Now Simon's mother-in-law
- 17:40was suffering from a high fever, and
- 17:42they asked him to help her. And standing
- 17:45over her, he rebuked the fever, and it
- 17:48left her. And she immediately got up and
- 17:50waited on them. While the sun was
- 17:53setting, all those who had any who were
- 17:55sick with various diseases brought them
- 17:58to him,
- 18:01and laying his hands on each one of
- 18:03them, he was healing them.
- 18:06Demons also were coming out of many,
- 18:08shouting, "You are the son of God." But
- 18:11rebuking them, he would not allow them
- 18:13to speak because they knew him to be the
- 18:17Messiah, the Christ.
- 18:20When day came, Jesus left and went to a
- 18:23secluded place, and the crowds were
- 18:25searching for him and came to him and
- 18:27tried to keep him from going away from
- 18:29them.
- 18:31But he said to them, "I must preach the
- 18:33kingdom of God to the other cities also,
- 18:37for I was sent for this purpose." So he
- 18:40[music] kept on preaching in the
- 18:41synagogues of Judea.
- 18:44So we have him full of the spirit, and
- 18:46in his hometown, they chase him away and
- 18:49try to push him over a cliff. But in the
- 18:51other towns, they try to keep him
- 18:53[music] from leaving.
- 18:56One is honor, and it releases faith, and
- 18:58that releases a miracle. The other is
- 19:01familiarity and contempt. And it blocks
- 19:05honor and it blocks faith and it
- 19:07prevents a miracle and it turns to
- 19:10murder.
