- 0:00Luke 24:1
- 0:02But on the first day of the week, at
- 0:05early dawn, they came to the tomb,
- 0:07bringing the [music] spices which they
- 0:09had prepared, and they found the stone
- 0:11rolled away from the tomb. But when they
- 0:14entered, they did not find the body of
- 0:16the Lord Jesus. While they were
- 0:19perplexed about this, behold, [music]
- 0:21two men suddenly stood near them in
- 0:24dazzling clothing. And as the women were
- 0:26terrified and bowed [music] their faces
- 0:28to the ground, the men said to them,
- 0:31"Why do you seek the living among the
- 0:34dead? He is not here, but he has risen.
- 0:38Remember how [music] he spoke to you
- 0:40while he was still in Galilee, saying
- 0:42that the Son of Man must be delivered
- 0:44into the hands of sinful men and be
- 0:47[music] crucified and the third day rise
- 0:50again?" And they remembered his words
- 0:52and [music] returned from the tomb and
- 0:55reported all these things to the 11 and
- 0:57to all the rest. Now they were Mary
- 1:00Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother
- 1:02of James. Also the other Mary with them
- 1:06were telling the things to [music] the
- 1:07apostles. But these words appeared to
- 1:10them as nonsense
- 1:13and they would not believe them. But
- 1:16Peter got up and ran to the tomb.
- 1:20Stooping and looking in, he saw the
- 1:22linen wrappings [music] only. And he
- 1:24went away to his home, marveling at what
- 1:27had happened. Jesus had told them, "No
- 1:31one takes my life from me, but I lay it
- 1:33down, and I will take it up again."
- 1:36Because living in the mortal life of his
- 1:40humanity [music] was the Almighty God.
- 1:43And God did not die. And God cannot die.
- 1:47And God has retabernacled [music]
- 1:49himself in the human body of the Lord
- 1:52Jesus.
- 1:54And he's no longer in the category of
- 1:57mortal flesh. He's now passed into an
- 2:00indestructible life. He can pass through
- 2:02walls. But his [music] body is like ours
- 2:06is going to be when we are raised at the
- 2:08end.
- 2:10And what has happened is
- 2:13Jesus [music] has descended into the
- 2:16power of the devil, which is death. He's
- 2:20descended into the grave. He has not
- 2:23gone into physical or literal hell. He's
- 2:27gone into shield, into a tomb, [music]
- 2:29into the grave. And he's taken away the
- 2:32key of death and and the grave. and he's
- 2:36come back and robbed the devil of his
- 2:40threat. That's how the devil holds
- 2:42people in bondage all their lifetime
- 2:44through the fear of death. And he's
- 2:46taken that away. The way the atonement
- 2:49has worked is that
- 2:52justice is the law of life in the world.
- 2:57It's the law of sewing and reaping. It's
- 2:59what allows us to give birth. It's what
- 3:01allows trees and animals to reproduce.
- 3:06You plant a seed in the ground, you're
- 3:07going to harvest it. It's the power of
- 3:10reproduction in the world. It's the law
- 3:13of life. But when we sinned, we turned
- 3:16that law of life against oursel because
- 3:19what we started planting was
- 3:21transgression. And that also is going to
- 3:24reproduce as anguish and pain and
- 3:26ultimately hell in eternity. And God
- 3:30cannot nullify
- 3:32his law of justice. He cannot say, "Oh,
- 3:34I made a mistake. I'll undo the law of
- 3:36justice." Because if he were to undo the
- 3:39law of justice, there would be no life.
- 3:41There would be no new children. There
- 3:43would be no young plants. There would be
- 3:45no life in the world. His law of justice
- 3:48is good. And I'm not talking about the
- 3:50Mosaic law. I'm talking about the
- 3:53principle of compensation. The law of
- 3:55compensation that is encoded and
- 3:58embedded in nature itself.
- 4:01And so God has to satisfy and absorb the
- 4:07harvest
- 4:08of our planting of sin without
- 4:12nullifying it but validating it and
- 4:16allow us to find refuge from that. And
- 4:20so he robes himself. The Almighty robes
- 4:24himself in our own weakness. He clothe
- 4:27himself in our hum humility in our
- 4:29humanity. He tabernacles
- 4:33hi the divine in the flesh of a man. And
- 4:37this is this is the mystery. Great is
- 4:39the mystery of godliness that God was
- 4:42revealed manifested in the flesh. And
- 4:45and Paul tells us God was in Christ
- 4:50reconciling the world to himself, not
- 4:53imputing their trespasses to them, but
- 4:56instead imputing those trespasses to
- 4:58himself, to his own body, so that his
- 5:02humanity could absorb the just penalty.
- 5:07But in in the courtroom drama,
- 5:11which is an imperfect analogy,
- 5:13the judge is not an angry father. The
- 5:16judge is the law of justice. And Jesus
- 5:21steps into the courtroom and says, "I
- 5:25want to purchase these prisoners of
- 5:28justice on death row. I want to purchase
- 5:31them." And this was a principle that
- 5:34occurred
- 5:36in the Roman legal system. A wealthy
- 5:40man, a lord, a governor, or sometimes
- 5:44just a wealthy individual could purchase
- 5:47a criminal from the Roman state.
- 5:51And when they did, they had total
- 5:53ownership and control over that slave.
- 5:57He was called a bond slave.
- 6:01So there's no scenario where they would
- 6:03purchase a guy and then wave at him as
- 6:06he walked out of the courtroom and they
- 6:08went back to their house. They purchased
- 6:10him to come into their own household and
- 6:14become their slave.
- 6:17So if Jesus had not risen from the
- 6:19grave,
- 6:21he would not have worked the freedom.
- 6:25He works the freedom because he lives
- 6:28because he disarms principalities and
- 6:32powers. Then he becomes the place where
- 6:35death has no hold or threat.
- 6:39So Paul says in Ephesians 4, when he
- 6:43ascended, when he rose, he led captive a
- 6:47host of captives. Now listen to that.
- 6:51He led captive a host of captives. He
- 6:54does not say he freed a host of
- 6:56captives. He said he took a host of
- 7:00captives as his captives. You and I and
- 7:03all who would believe in Jesus, we were
- 7:06captives to fear. We were captives to
- 7:09judgment. We were captives to sin and
- 7:12death. And he came and said, "I would
- 7:15like to purchase those who will accept
- 7:18me and come to me." But he does not free
- 7:21us on our own recgnizance. He does not
- 7:24turn us loose. Outside of him, we are
- 7:27not free. But it is only in him, in his
- 7:30house, under his name, in his spirit, in
- 7:34his identity in Christ that we now have
- 7:38this life and this freedom. Not to live
- 7:41to ourselves, but for us to live is
- 7:44Christ. And to die is truly gain. My
- 7:48life is not my own. I've been bought
- 7:50with a price. So the atonement does not
- 7:53atone for that which lives outside of
- 7:56Christ. It atones for that which is
- 7:59surrendered into and abiding within
- 8:02Christ. Christ in his spirit. Christ in
- 8:06his name. Christ as a place of
- 8:08salvation. Christ in his body. Christ in
- 8:12his covenant as a kingdom. As a temple.
- 8:15He is that house. He is that temple. And
- 8:17we are freed from the death march of
- 8:21sin. We are freed from the chains and
- 8:24bondage of death. But we are transferred
- 8:28as now the captive of Christ. I, a
- 8:31prisoner of the Lord Jesus, beseech you,
- 8:33Paul said. So we have to stay faithful,
- 8:37not perfect, but faithful to him who
- 8:39bought us. If we are a runaway servant,
- 8:42if we flee his house and do not abide,
- 8:46then we escape that city of refuge, that
- 8:49place of refuge that Christ is where the
- 8:52blood fell, where the atonement was
- 8:55wrought, and where the resurrection
- 8:57triumphed over death. That's where we've
- 8:59got to be. It's in him. It's not just by
- 9:02him.
- 9:04Everybody doubted, but Peter couldn't
- 9:06resist going and seeing for himself. So
- 9:09he runs down there. Peter ran to the
- 9:12tomb. Stooping in, he saw that the linen
- 9:16wrappings were there only. Verse 13. And
- 9:20behold, two of them were going that very
- 9:22day to a village named Emmas, which was
- 9:24about 7 milesi from Jerusalem. And they
- 9:28were talking with each other about all
- 9:29these things which had taken place.
- 9:32While they were talking and discussing
- 9:35presumably the death of Jesus and the
- 9:38loss of their Lord, Jesus himself
- 9:40approached and began traveling with
- 9:42them. But their eyes were prevented from
- 9:46recognizing him. And he said to them,
- 9:49"What are these words that you are
- 9:51exchanging with one another as you are
- 9:53walking?" And they stood still looking
- 9:57sad. One of them named Cleopus answered
- 10:00and said to him, "Are you the only one
- 10:04visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the
- 10:08things which have happened here in these
- 10:10days?"
- 10:14He was the only one in Jerusalem who
- 10:17knew the things that had actually
- 10:19happened in these days.
- 10:22And he said to them, "What things?"
- 10:26You see, he wants to know their faith.
- 10:30He wants to give them the opportunity
- 10:34to show if they heard any of his words
- 10:37about resurrection or if they've
- 10:40completely forgotten all of that and are
- 10:43in the doldrums, the the mourning of the
- 10:48tragedy and not looking toward the
- 10:50resurrection. [clears throat] And he
- 10:52said to them, "What things?"
- 10:55And they said to him, "The things about
- 10:57Jesus the Nazarene,
- 11:00who was a prophet, mighty in deed and
- 11:05word in the sight of God and the
- 11:07people."
- 11:09He was so much more than a prophet.
- 11:12But his death has already canceled out
- 11:14for them
- 11:16Peter's confession. You are the Christ,
- 11:19the son of the living God.
- 11:22Now he's a prophet.
- 11:25and how the chief priests and our rulers
- 11:27delivered him to the sentence of death
- 11:29and crucified him.
- 11:32But we were hoping that it was he who
- 11:35was going to redeem Israel. If God ever
- 11:38wanted to see how fickle our faith and
- 11:41commitment is, here it is. We were
- 11:45hoping. It's a past tense. We've given
- 11:48up already. We were hoping he was the
- 11:50redeemer, but now we're calling him a
- 11:53prophet.
- 11:55Indeed, besides all this, it is the
- 11:57third day since these things happened.
- 12:02But also, some women among us amazed us
- 12:05when they were at the tomb early this
- 12:07morning and did not find his body. They
- 12:10came saying that they had seen a vision
- 12:13of angels who said he was alive.
- 12:18You don't feel a lot of faith in these
- 12:19words. They amazed us, but they were
- 12:22women. Who knows?
- 12:25Some of those who were with us went to
- 12:27the tomb and found it just exactly as
- 12:30the women also had said, but him they
- 12:34did not see.
- 12:37They can't put it together. They can't
- 12:40think outside of their frameworks,
- 12:42outside of what's normal, what's
- 12:44expected. They saw him die.
- 12:48And he said to them, "Oh foolish men,
- 12:53slow of heart to believe in all that the
- 12:58prophets have spoken."
- 13:02Was it not necessary for the Christ to
- 13:04suffer these things and to enter into
- 13:07his glory?
- 13:10Jesus is exasperated with them. Oh
- 13:13foolish men. And here's the key word,
- 13:17slow of heart.
- 13:20What does it mean to have a fast heart
- 13:23to believe? It was not their mind that
- 13:26was blocking their knowledge. It was not
- 13:28their mind that was blocking their
- 13:30faith, their belief. It was their heart.
- 13:33They were slow of heart to believe.
- 13:37Then beginning with Moses and with all
- 13:40the prophets, he Jesus explained to them
- 13:44the things concerning himself in all the
- 13:48scriptures.
- 13:51And they approached the village where
- 13:54they were going, and he acted as though
- 13:57he were going further.
- 14:00But they urged him, saying, "Stay with
- 14:04us, for it is getting toward evening,
- 14:07and the day is now nearly over." So he
- 14:10went in to stay with them. He's talking
- 14:13with them. He's [clears throat] opening
- 14:14the scriptures,
- 14:16and something is stirring in them, but
- 14:18they don't yet recognize that it is
- 14:20Jesus.
- 14:22They don't ask him to stay because he's
- 14:24the Messiah. They ask him to stay
- 14:26because the hour is late. and they're
- 14:29trying to be nice to this guy who knows
- 14:31the scriptures very well,
- 14:33but they have not had the aha moment.
- 14:37When he, Jesus, had reclined at the
- 14:39table with them, he took the bread and
- 14:42blessed it, and breaking it, he began
- 14:45giving it to them.
- 14:47Then their eyes were opened, and they
- 14:52recognized him, [clears throat]
- 14:54and he vanished from their sight.
- 15:00They said to one another,
- 15:02"Were not our hearts burning within us
- 15:06while he was speaking to us on the road,
- 15:09while he was explaining the scriptures
- 15:12to us."
- 15:16And they got up that very hour and
- 15:18returned to Jerusalem and found gathered
- 15:21there the 11 and those who were with
- 15:24them, saying, "The Lord has really risen
- 15:28and has appeared to Simon."
- 15:31They began to relate their experience on
- 15:34the road and how he was recognized by
- 15:37them in the breaking of the bread.
- 15:44People speculate as to whether Jesus was
- 15:48in some strange form like he had an a
- 15:52body that with a different nose and eyes
- 15:55and ears and such. I don't read that
- 15:57here.
- 15:59I think this reflects
- 16:02the
- 16:05extent
- 16:06to which our expectations
- 16:10inform our insights.
- 16:13I think this reveals that yes, it's
- 16:16evening time. They would have been
- 16:18wearing
- 16:20a cloak often times with a with a um a
- 16:26turban over their heads where you would
- 16:29not necessarily have seen the figure
- 16:31very clearly. And they may have been
- 16:33walking in shadows with the sun at their
- 16:36backs for those last miles toward Emmas.
- 16:42But I think what this shows is Jesus is
- 16:46showing them that I'm going to keep
- 16:49coming to you and I'm going to be in a
- 16:52form you don't recognize.
- 16:54I'm going to come to you through one
- 16:56another. I'm going to come to you
- 16:58through my body. And you need to learn
- 17:00to recognize me by the burning in your
- 17:04hearts, not by what your eyes can see
- 17:08only. because I'm going to be opening
- 17:11the scriptures in a way that only I can
- 17:13open them. And I I think that that's the
- 17:16powerful thing. They say, "Did not our
- 17:19hearts burn within us?" Their minds were
- 17:22saying, "Can't be." Their eyes were
- 17:24saying, "Not him.
- 17:27This is impossible."
- 17:29Their hearts were burning. However, but
- 17:32they were slow to believe in that
- 17:35burning in their hearts, that witness of
- 17:38the Holy Spirit that was saying, "We
- 17:41know this voice. This is the voice of
- 17:43the Lord."
- 17:45But in the breaking of the bread,
- 17:48in the in the breaking of the bread,
- 17:50they've seen him feed the 5000. They've
- 17:53seen him feed the 4,000. They've seen
- 17:56him feed them at the last supper when he
- 17:59said, "This is my body." And somehow in
- 18:02the sharing of that meal, in the
- 18:05breaking of that body that signifies his
- 18:08own giving of himself, they recognize
- 18:12only Jesus serves the bread like that.
- 18:16Only Jesus gives himself like that. And
- 18:19their eyes are opening opened.
- 18:22While they were telling these things, he
- 18:24himself stood in their midst.
- 18:27So they go and start telling the others
- 18:28in Jerusalem what [clears throat]
- 18:30happened. And while they're telling the
- 18:32story,
- 18:34it's not just a witness of his spirit
- 18:36that they sense while they're telling
- 18:39their testimony, but while they're
- 18:41telling their testimony, Jesus is with
- 18:43them. Wherever two or three are gathered
- 18:46in my name, there I am in the midst of
- 18:48them. Again, this is a sign that as you
- 18:52share your testimony, as you confess in
- 18:55faith to others what you have
- 18:56encountered, you're going to sense that
- 18:58I am with you again. It's like the other
- 19:01symbol of the breaking of the bread.
- 19:04While they were telling these things, he
- 19:06himself stood in their midst and said to
- 19:08them, "Peace be to you. Shalom."
- 19:13And they were startled and frightened
- 19:16and thought they were seeing a spirit.
- 19:21Just what they thought when he came to
- 19:23them walking on the water. And he said
- 19:26to them, "Why are you troubled and why
- 19:29do doubts arise in your hearts?
- 19:34See my hands and my feet that it is I
- 19:38myself.
- 19:40Touch me and see. For a spirit does not
- 19:44have flesh and bones as you see that I
- 19:47have. Jesus is certainly a spirit, but
- 19:51he's not just a spirit. He's a spirit in
- 19:54a tangible human body.
- 19:57And when he had said this, he showed
- 19:59them his hands and his feet.
- 20:02While they still could not believe it,
- 20:06because of their joy and amazement, he
- 20:08said to them, "Have you anything here to
- 20:11eat?"
- 20:14They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
- 20:18not boiled, broiled, fire roasted, and
- 20:22he took it and ate it in front of them
- 20:24before them.
- 20:27Now he said to them, "These are my words
- 20:30which I spoke to you while I was still
- 20:32with you, that all things which are
- 20:34written about me in the law of Moses and
- 20:37the prophets and the Psalms must be
- 20:39fulfilled."
- 20:41Then he opened their minds to understand
- 20:44the scriptures.
- 20:46So he eats the fish to prove that he's
- 20:49not an apparition. He's not a phantom in
- 20:52their minds and he's not merely a
- 20:54spirit, but he's Jesus. He's their
- 20:58friend. He's their Lord. He's the one
- 21:01who they knew. Then he opened their
- 21:04minds to understand the scriptures and
- 21:07said to them, "Thus it is written that
- 21:10the Christ would suffer and rise again
- 21:13from the dead the third day, and that
- 21:17repentance
- 21:18for forgiveness of sins would be
- 21:21proclaimed in his name to all nations,
- 21:25beginning
- 21:26from Jerusalem."
- 21:29This is Luke's version of Matthew's
- 21:31great commission. Matthew says, "Go ye
- 21:34into all the world and make disciples of
- 21:36all nations, baptizing them in the name
- 21:39of the Father and of the Son and the
- 21:41Holy Ghost." And that name is Jesus.
- 21:44Luke just says [music] it like this.
- 21:46Thus it is written that the Christ would
- 21:48suffer and rise again [music] from the
- 21:50dead the third day, and that repentance
- 21:53for forgiveness of sins would [music] be
- 21:55proclaimed in his name, Jesus's name, to
- 21:59all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
- 22:03You are witnesses of these [music]
- 22:05things. And behold, I am sending forth
- 22:08the promise of my father upon you,
- 22:10[music] but you are to stay in the city
- 22:13until you are clothed with power from on
- 22:17high. And he led them out [music] as far
- 22:20as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands
- 22:23and blessed them. While he was blessing
- 22:26them, he parted from them and was
- 22:29carried up into heaven. And they after
- 22:32worshiping him returned to Jerusalem
- 22:36with great joy and and were continually
- 22:39in the temple praising God.
- 22:44So he tells them,
- 22:46"Go in the city until you be clothed
- 22:49with power. You're going to be my
- 22:51witnesses. You're going to [music]
- 22:52spread this gospel all over the world,
- 22:54but you don't yet have the power.
- 22:57You don't yet have the resurrection
- 22:59power that just brought me forth from
- 23:01the grave. It needs [music] to be in
- 23:03your life. And when it comes, you're not
- 23:06going to deny me before the servant
- 23:09girl. When it comes, you're not going to
- 23:11doubt me and my presence among you. When
- 23:14it comes, [music]
- 23:15you're not going to bicker and worry
- 23:17about who's the greatest. You're going
- 23:19to stand up with great boldness and
- 23:22carry this message to the ends of the
