- 0:00Luke chapter 23 verse 1.
- 0:04Then the whole body of them got up and
- 0:06brought him before Pilate.
- 0:09And they began to accuse him saying,
- 0:12"We found this [music] man misleading
- 0:14our nation
- 0:16and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar
- 0:19and saying that he himself is Christ a
- 0:21king."
- 0:23So Pilate asked him [music] saying,
- 0:26"Are you the king of the Jews?"
- 0:28And he answered [music] him and said,
- 0:30"It is as you say."
- 0:33Then Pilate said to the [music] chief
- 0:34priests and the crowds,
- 0:36"I find no guilt in this man."
- 0:39But they kept on insisting saying, "He
- 0:42stirs up the people teaching all over
- 0:45Judea starting [music] from Galilee even
- 0:48as far as this place."
- 0:51When Pilate heard it, he asked whether
- 0:53the man was a Galilean.
- 0:55And when he learned that he belonged to
- 0:57Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to
- 0:59Herod,
- 1:01who himself also was in Jerusalem at
- 1:04that time.
- 1:06So the
- 1:07the feeling here is that you have a
- 1:09tension between
- 1:11the people's hatred and the political
- 1:14justice system.
- 1:16And the justice system of the Roman
- 1:19state
- 1:20finds no fault in Jesus.
- 1:23But that's not what's going to kill him.
- 1:25It's the hatred. It's the envy.
- 1:29He keeps stirring up the people. They
- 1:31want to return [music] to business as
- 1:33usual
- 1:34and they're full of envy.
- 1:36Pilate's trying to get out of it from
- 1:37the very word go.
- 1:39We learn that his wife has a dream
- 1:42shortly
- 1:43and he's trying to get out of it. So
- 1:44first he punts him off to Herod. Maybe
- 1:47maybe Herod will take care of this.
- 1:50You can sense that
- 1:52>> [music]
- 1:52>> Pilate is not a compassionate man. He
- 1:54was a brutal man. He killed people
- 1:57uh on a daily basis.
- 1:59And yet
- 2:01he doesn't want to touch this. There's
- 2:03some
- 2:04sense in him that he knows this is
- 2:07this is
- 2:08motivated by the wrong reasons.
- 2:11Now, Herod was very glad when he saw
- 2:13Jesus, for he had [music] wanted to see
- 2:15him for a long time.
- 2:17Because he had been hearing about him
- 2:19and was hoping to see some sign
- 2:21performed by him.
- 2:24And he questioned him at some length.
- 2:27But he, Jesus,
- 2:29>> [music]
- 2:29>> answered him nothing.
- 2:32And the chief priests and the scribes
- 2:33were standing there accusing him
- 2:35vehemently.
- 2:37And Herod, with his soldiers, after
- 2:38treating him with contempt and mocking
- 2:41him,
- 2:42dressed him in a gorgeous [music]
- 2:44robe and sent him back to Pilate.
- 2:48We know that some of the other gospels
- 2:50say that
- 2:51they put a purple robe on him. And
- 2:54that was because only kings were allowed
- 2:56to wear purple.
- 2:58And
- 2:59it was to mock his claim to kingship.
- 3:03Now, Herod and Pilate became friends
- 3:05with one another that very day.
- 3:08For before they had been enemies with
- 3:10each other.
- 3:12Here's another insight that
- 3:14there's something
- 3:16there's some demonic grace, some demonic
- 3:18anointing
- 3:20that comes upon people
- 3:22who partner up
- 3:23to harass and accuse
- 3:26and persecute Christ.
- 3:30Pilate summoned the chief priests and
- 3:32rulers of the people and said to them,
- 3:35"You brought this man to me
- 3:37as one who incites the people to
- 3:39rebellion.
- 3:40And behold, having examined him before
- 3:44you,
- 3:44I have found no guilt in this man
- 3:47regarding the charges which you make
- 3:49against him.
- 3:52No, nor has Herod,
- 3:54for he sent him back to us. And behold,
- 3:57nothing deserving of death has been done
- 4:00by him.
- 4:02Therefore, I will punish him and
- 4:04[clears throat] release him.
- 4:07Now, he was obliged to release to them
- 4:09at the feast [clears throat]
- 4:11one prisoner.
- 4:13But they cried out all together saying,
- 4:16"Away with this man
- 4:18and release for us Barabbas."
- 4:22He was one who had been thrown into
- 4:24prison for an insurrection made in the
- 4:28city and for murder.
- 4:32Pilate, wanting to release Jesus,
- 4:36addressed them again.
- 4:38But they kept on calling out saying,
- 4:40"Crucify him. Crucify him."
- 4:45And he said to them the third time,
- 4:46"Why?
- 4:48What evil has this man done?
- 4:50I have found in him no guilt demanding
- 4:53death.
- 4:54Therefore, I will punish him and release
- 4:57him."
- 4:59But they were insistent with loud voices
- 5:02asking that he be crucified,
- 5:05and their voices began to prevail.
- 5:11And Pilate pronounced sentence
- 5:13that their demand be granted.
- 5:16And he released the man they were asking
- 5:18for, who had been thrown into prison for
- 5:21insurrection and murder,
- 5:23but he delivered Jesus to their will.
- 5:29Luke wants us to understand several
- 5:31things here.
- 5:33He's emphasizing that the political
- 5:35system
- 5:37found no cause for death in Jesus, but
- 5:39the will of the people is what is going
- 5:42to murder him.
- 5:44And And going to hijack the political
- 5:46system as its tool
- 5:49simply because it's full of envy and
- 5:51hatred and slander.
- 5:56He also wants us to understand
- 5:58the substitutionary nature
- 6:01of this exchange.
- 6:04Barabbas is the worst sort of criminal.
- 6:07Barabbas is an insurrectionist. He's
- 6:09actually guilty
- 6:11of the trumped-up false charges that
- 6:13they're bringing against Jesus. Barabbas
- 6:15did them.
- 6:17He's a murderer.
- 6:19But Jesus is going to die in his place.
- 6:22And that's the substitutionary
- 6:25act. He's going to accept from the
- 6:27system of justice
- 6:30what belonged to another.
- 6:33It's very powerful that
- 6:35the conclusion here is that he delivered
- 6:38Jesus to their will.
- 6:43It is human will
- 6:45that crucified Jesus.
- 6:48It is our rebellious will that crucified
- 6:52Jesus.
- 6:53And that's the will that starts in the
- 6:55Garden of Eden when we say we will be
- 6:57like God
- 6:58and we start to take from the tree of
- 7:00knowledge and violate our covenant
- 7:01relationship with the Father.
- 7:04And if it's that will that crucified
- 7:06Jesus, then we know what it is that must
- 7:09die in repentance. It's that same
- 7:12stubborn
- 7:13will that is in competition with the
- 7:16authority of the anointed one.
- 7:20When they led him away, they seized a
- 7:22man
- 7:23Simon of Cyrene
- 7:26coming in from the country and placed on
- 7:28him the cross to carry behind Jesus.
- 7:32And following him was a large crowd of
- 7:35the people
- 7:36and of women
- 7:37who were mourning and lamenting.
- 7:42Literally beating their breasts
- 7:46in anguish.
- 7:49But Jesus, turning to them, said,
- 7:52"Daughters of Jerusalem,
- 7:54stop weeping for me,
- 7:57but weep for yourselves and for your
- 7:59children.
- 8:02For behold, the days are coming
- 8:04when they will say, "Blessed are the
- 8:06barren
- 8:07and the wombs that never bore
- 8:10and the breasts that never nursed."
- 8:13Then they will begin to say to the
- 8:14mountains, "Fall on us and to the hills,
- 8:18cover us."
- 8:20For if they do these things when the
- 8:22tree is green,
- 8:24what will happen
- 8:26when it is dry?
- 8:29You remember that after he cursed the
- 8:31the tree and said, "No more shall anyone
- 8:33eat fruit from you again,"
- 8:35the very next morning the tree was
- 8:36already dry. It was already withered.
- 8:40And so he's saying,
- 8:41"This system that has rejected the
- 8:44fruits of repentance,
- 8:47this religious system that has rejected
- 8:50the Lamb of God, the one who comes in
- 8:52the name of the Lord,
- 8:54it's not going to stay green.
- 8:56It's going to come under judgment."
- 8:59So he's prophesying the sacking of
- 9:01Jerusalem. He's prophesying the
- 9:03uprooting of the Jewish people from
- 9:06their land
- 9:07and the scattering of these same people
- 9:10into the nations, thrown into the sea of
- 9:13the Gentiles.
- 9:14And he's telling the women, "Don't weep
- 9:17for me. This is not a self-centered
- 9:19Jesus. He's been beaten. He has a crown
- 9:21of thorns smashed down on his head.
- 9:24He's been mocked.
- 9:26He's been scourged with a cat of nine
- 9:28tails.
- 9:30And yet he's telling them, "Don't weep
- 9:31for me. This isn't about my pain. You're
- 9:35Something is coming. If you can't get
- 9:37rid of this envy, if you're going to
- 9:39release the murderer
- 9:42inside, if you're going to release human
- 9:44will
- 9:45to this extent, there's a judgment that
- 9:47is coming on this city and this people
- 9:50that is going to astonish you. And
- 9:52you're he's saying you're going to wish
- 9:54you didn't have children. You're going
- 9:55to wish you weren't expectant or young
- 9:58mothers in this time.
- 10:01Two others also who were criminals were
- 10:03being led away
- 10:05to be put to death with him.
- 10:07When they came to the place called the
- 10:09skull,
- 10:11Golgotha,
- 10:12there they crucified him and the
- 10:14criminals,
- 10:16one on the right and the other on the
- 10:17left.
- 10:19But Jesus was saying, "Father,
- 10:21forgive them, for they do not know what
- 10:24they are doing."
- 10:26And they cast lots,
- 10:28dividing up his garments among
- 10:29themselves.
- 10:31And the people stood by, looking on. And
- 10:34even the rulers were sneering at him,
- 10:36saying, "He saved others.
- 10:39Let him save himself, if this is the
- 10:41Christ of God, his chosen one."
- 10:45The soldiers also mocked him, coming up
- 10:47to him, offering him sour wine, and
- 10:50saying, "If you're the king of the Jews,
- 10:52save yourself."
- 10:55Now there was also an inscription above
- 10:57him,
- 10:58"This is the king of the Jews."
- 11:02One of the criminals who were hanged
- 11:03there
- 11:04was hurling abuse at him, saying,
- 11:07"Are you not the Christ? Save yourself
- 11:10and us."
- 11:12But the other answered and rebuked him
- 11:14and said,
- 11:16"Do you not even fear God,
- 11:18since you are under the same sentence of
- 11:21condemnation?
- 11:23And we indeed are suffering justly,
- 11:27for we are receiving what we deserve for
- 11:29our deeds.
- 11:30But this man
- 11:32has done nothing wrong.
- 11:35And he was saying,
- 11:36"Jesus,
- 11:37remember me when you come into your
- 11:40kingdom."
- 11:43And he, Jesus, said to him,
- 11:45"Truly I say to you, today
- 11:48you shall be with me in paradise."
- 11:52It was now about the sixth hour,
- 11:54and darkness fell over the whole land
- 11:57until the ninth hour,
- 11:59because the sun was obscured, and the
- 12:02veil of the temple was torn in two.
- 12:05And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice,
- 12:07said,
- 12:08"Father, into your hands I commit my
- 12:11spirit."
- 12:13Having said this, he breathed his last.
- 12:17Now, when the centurion saw what had
- 12:19happened,
- 12:20he began praising God, saying,
- 12:22"Certainly, this man was innocent."
- 12:25And the crowds who came together
- 12:28for this spectacle,
- 12:30when they observed what had happened,
- 12:32began to return, beating their breasts.
- 12:36And all his acquaintances and the women
- 12:38who accompanied him from Galilee were
- 12:41standing at a distance, seeing these
- 12:43things.
- 12:48The story of the
- 12:49the two thieves.
- 12:52There's intentionality in the way they
- 12:54they did this. They wanted to make him
- 12:57look like a criminal.
- 13:00He was numbered with the transgressors,
- 13:02and they wanted to
- 13:04mock him even in the way they positioned
- 13:06the cross.
- 13:08So, they sandwiched him between two
- 13:10murderers.
- 13:12But even in that, the devil got a black
- 13:14eye and lost,
- 13:16because right there,
- 13:17he's leading someone to faith,
- 13:20and he's saying,
- 13:21"Jesus, remember me when you come into
- 13:24your kingdom."
- 13:26And he's giving him that assurance.
- 13:29Even from the cross, he's forgiving.
- 13:31He's acting in exactly the opposite way
- 13:34as the whole spectacle was engineered to
- 13:37provoke.
- 13:39And he's showing grace, he's showing
- 13:40mercy.
- 13:42And the
- 13:44the events that occurred upon his death
- 13:46would have been so dramatic that people
- 13:49are walking away beating their breasts.
- 13:52That the Centurion is saying he was
- 13:54innocent.
- 13:55Other gospels fill in more of what he
- 13:57said and add that he said, "Surely this
- 14:00was the son of God."
- 14:02That the sun was darkened and the veil
- 14:04of the temple was torn.
- 14:06This is the sign that the glory and the
- 14:08presence of God has departed from the
- 14:11temple.
- 14:12And that temple is now
- 14:14going to be torn down
- 14:16in a matter of a few years.
- 14:20And a man named Joseph, who was a member
- 14:22of the council, a good and righteous
- 14:25man.
- 14:26He had not consented to their plan and
- 14:28action.
- 14:30A man from Arimathea,
- 14:32a city of the Jews, who was waiting for
- 14:34the kingdom of God.
- 14:36This man went to Pilate and asked for
- 14:38the body of Jesus.
- 14:40And he took it down and wrapped it in
- 14:43linen cloth
- 14:44and laid him in a tomb cut into the rock
- 14:47where no one had ever lain.
- 14:50It was the preparation day and the
- 14:53Sabbath was about to begin.
- 14:55Now, the women who had come with him out
- 14:57of Galilee followed and saw the tomb and
- 15:00how his body was laid.
- 15:03Then they returned and prepared spices
- 15:05and perfumes. And on the Sabbath, they
- 15:08rested according to the commandment.
- 15:11The veil of the temple
- 15:13was this critical symbol
- 15:16that divided God's holy most holy place
- 15:21from the people, the worshippers.
- 15:25And in that holy place was the Ark of
- 15:28Covenant.
- 15:30And above the Ark were the
- 15:32cherubim, the the angels.
- 15:35And the cherubim had their wings up like
- 15:39a startled eagle over prey.
- 15:42In a in a posture of aggression and
- 15:45protection.
- 15:47And those cherubim represented the
- 15:50angelic host of God
- 15:52guarding people
- 15:54from access to his presence
- 15:57because
- 16:00our sins made us unable, unworthy to
- 16:04enter his presence
- 16:06and live.
- 16:07And so those cherubim are seen
- 16:10throughout the Bible. The first place
- 16:12that they're seen is at the gate of of
- 16:15Eden.
- 16:16When the when Adam and Eve are driven
- 16:19out of their communion with the Lord
- 16:22where they used to walk with God in the
- 16:23cool of the day, literally the spirit of
- 16:26the day.
- 16:27They're driven out. Sin drives them out.
- 16:30They cannot enter his presence without
- 16:32being
- 16:33without being consumed by it.
- 16:36And so the cherubim then, when they look
- 16:38back, are guarding the gate of Eden. The
- 16:40angels of God are guarding the gate of
- 16:42Eden with a flaming sword so that they
- 16:44cannot enter.
- 16:46And that veil
- 16:48is erected to say, "This one spot in all
- 16:52of the community of Israel where the
- 16:55presence of God dwells,
- 16:57you can come close to it, but you can't
- 17:00come into it because of this veil."
- 17:03I believe the veil was as thick as 2 ft
- 17:05thick.
- 17:07It was a It was like a wall of fabric,
- 17:10this impenetrable barrier. So there was
- 17:13no there was no conceivable way that
- 17:16someone was going to tear the veil or
- 17:19accidentally tear the veil.
- 17:21And um
- 17:23And on the day when Jesus is crucified,
- 17:26Luke says that
- 17:27uh the light of the sun was obscured.
- 17:32There are many historical records from
- 17:34the Romans that specifically say
- 17:38tell about a solar eclipse that happened
- 17:40on that specific day.
- 17:43The problem is is it was out of
- 17:46character. There was no planned solar
- 17:47eclipse.
- 17:49And
- 17:50the other gospels say there was an
- 17:52earthquake. So, at the moment of his
- 17:55death,
- 17:56you've got the sun being darkened and
- 17:59you've got the earth shaking
- 18:01and you've got the Lord ripping the veil
- 18:04of the temple from top to bottom, not
- 18:07from bottom to top, as if the Father
- 18:10himself is saying,
- 18:13"I've torn
- 18:15the barrier
- 18:16and now you can have [music] access, not
- 18:19into that temple because the presence
- 18:21has left it forever,
- 18:23but into the holy of holies,
- 18:25>> [music]
- 18:25>> into heaven itself, as the writer of
- 18:27Hebrews says."
- 18:29And this is what he means when he says,
- 18:31"Now we have confident access
- 18:34by one spirit to one Father through the
- 18:38blood of Jesus."
- 18:40The writer of Hebrews tells us that
- 18:42Christ's body
- 18:43was that veil.
- 18:45That veil [music] that was a barrier
- 18:47became a veil that was a door.
- 18:50"I am the door, so that through him
- 18:54we might approach the throne of grace
- 18:56and find mercy." The throne of grace and
- 18:59mercy refers to the mercy seat
- 19:04in between the wings of the cherubim on
- 19:06the ark of the covenant. That space
- 19:09was called the kapporet
- 19:12or caporet like Yom Kippur. [music] And
- 19:16caporet means atonement or mercy seat.
- 19:21So, when the veil of his flesh is torn
- 19:24the atonement is complete. He has
- 19:29paid justice. He has balanced the scales
- 19:32of justice so that there [music] is no
- 19:35hell due to those who flee for refuge
- 19:38into him.
- 19:40For those who pass through the torn veil
- 19:43of his body, of his sacrifice, accepting
- 19:46the new and living way of his blood
- 19:48offering, and come into him in that
- 19:52place
- 19:53there is refuge.
- 19:54And we now have that access. We now have
- 19:57that communion. In essence, we can enter
- 20:00back into
- 20:01the oneness of the Holy Spirit, the Eden
- 20:05of relationship with God in Christ.
- 20:09>> [music]
- 20:20[music]
