- 0:00Luke chapter 22 verse 1.
- 0:02Now the feast of unleavened bread, which
- 0:05is called the Passover, was approaching.
- 0:08The chief priests and the scribes were
- 0:10seeking how they might put him to death,
- 0:13for they were afraid of the people.
- 0:15Now I've already said in the previous
- 0:17chapter that Luke is giving us a clue
- 0:20when he tells us that Jesus showed
- 0:22himself publicly in the temple, and in
- 0:25contrast [music]
- 0:26at nights he stayed on the Mount of
- 0:28Olives. And I believe that he's hinting
- 0:31[music] that the way Judas betrayed him
- 0:34was that he divulged to his enemies his
- 0:37whereabouts
- 0:38>> [music]
- 0:38>> when he wasn't in a public place and
- 0:40where they would be restrained by the
- 0:43crowds.
- 0:46The chief priests and the scribes were
- 0:47seeking how they might put him to death,
- 0:50for they were afraid of the people.
- 0:52And Satan entered into Judas, who was
- 0:55called Iscariot,
- 0:57belonging to the number of the 12.
- 1:00And he went away and discussed with the
- 1:02chief priests and officers how he might
- 1:05betray him to them.
- 1:08So how he might divulge, how he might
- 1:10deliver him over. How can I help you get
- 1:13him? Is basically what that means.
- 1:17When it says Satan entered Judas' heart,
- 1:20the word that they're using, Satan, it
- 1:22means accuser.
- 1:24So in a manner of speaking, you could
- 1:25say accusation entered [music] Judas'
- 1:28heart.
- 1:29He shifted from being a follower to
- 1:31being a judge, to being an accuser. And
- 1:34very soon after
- 1:36he's figuring out how he can deliver his
- 1:39Lord into the hands of his enemies.
- 1:42They were glad and agreed to give him
- 1:45money.
- 1:46So he consented and began seeking a good
- 1:50opportunity to betray him to them apart
- 1:54from the the
- 1:56So
- 1:58Jesus was not showing himself except
- 2:00among the crowds, and that's what
- 2:02restrained his enemies. He only came in
- 2:04a crowded place.
- 2:06And Judas is saying, "I think I can help
- 2:08you get him apart from the crowd." So,
- 2:11he's going to divulge his whereabouts.
- 2:15Then came the first day of unleavened
- 2:17bread on which the Passover lamb had to
- 2:20be sacrificed.
- 2:22And Jesus sent Peter and John saying,
- 2:25"Go and prepare the Passover for us so
- 2:28that we may eat it."
- 2:30They said to him,
- 2:32"Where do you want us to prepare it?"
- 2:34He said to them,
- 2:36"When you have entered the city,
- 2:38a man will meet you carrying a pitcher
- 2:40of water.
- 2:41Follow him into the house that he
- 2:43enters.
- 2:45And you shall say to the owner of the
- 2:47house,
- 2:48'The teacher says to you,
- 2:50"Where is the guest room in which I may
- 2:53eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
- 2:56And he will show you a large furnished
- 2:59upper room.
- 3:00Prepare it there."
- 3:02And they left and found everything just
- 3:05as he had told them.
- 3:07And they prepared the Passover.
- 3:10When the hour had come,
- 3:12he reclined at the table and the
- 3:14apostles with him.
- 3:16And he said to them,
- 3:18"I have earnestly desired to eat this
- 3:20Passover with you before I suffer.
- 3:24For I say to you, I shall never again
- 3:27eat it until it is fulfilled in the
- 3:31kingdom of God."
- 3:34So, whatever this Passover is,
- 3:37this partaking of bread, this drinking
- 3:40of wine,
- 3:42it is a shadow of a reality that is only
- 3:46going to be fulfilled, made full and
- 3:48real in the kingdom of God.
- 3:51And he's saying, "This is the last time
- 3:53I'm going to partake of this in the
- 3:55natural
- 3:56physical way."
- 3:59And when he had taken a cup
- 4:01and given thanks, he said,
- 4:04"Take and share it among yourself.
- 4:07For I say to you, I will not drink the
- 4:10fruit of the vine from now on until the
- 4:13kingdom of God comes."
- 4:15And when he had taken some bread
- 4:17and given thanks,
- 4:19he broke it and gave it to them saying,
- 4:22"This is my body
- 4:24which is given for you.
- 4:25Do this in remembrance of me."
- 4:29So, he's telling them that
- 4:31they're going to share the cup
- 4:34and they're going to share the bread
- 4:38in the future. But this is his last
- 4:41sharing with them in this physical form.
- 4:45But he tells them in John that they
- 4:47don't understand what they're
- 4:48participating in. Because this is a
- 4:51symbol, it's an important symbol, but
- 4:53it's a symbol of something that is going
- 4:56to come later.
- 4:57According to Matthew, we know that the
- 4:59cup
- 5:00is the blood of his covenant. The blood
- 5:03of cleansing, the blood of forgiveness.
- 5:06We know that John says in his epistle
- 5:09that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from
- 5:12all sin.
- 5:14But how and when does that blood cleanse
- 5:16us? When we walk in the light as he is
- 5:20in the light, we have fellowship,
- 5:23koinonia, shared meal with one another,
- 5:27and the blood cleanses us from all sin.
- 5:30We know that this fulfills Jesus's words
- 5:32to the apostles when he says,
- 5:35"Whosever sins you forgive, they are
- 5:38forgiven."
- 5:39So, the way I see this is he's telling
- 5:41them,
- 5:43"I am going to be sharing this with you
- 5:46after the day of Pentecost because
- 5:48wherever two or three are gathered in my
- 5:50name, I'm going to be in your presence.
- 5:53And I'm going to be working through you
- 5:56to forgive one another. I'm going to be
- 5:58working through you to share the life of
- 6:01Christ through and to one another.
- 6:04But it's going to be in a different form
- 6:06and mode. It's going to be in the form
- 6:08of the body of Christ. And that's the
- 6:11that's the celebration of this after the
- 6:14kingdom that I believe he's talking
- 6:15about.
- 6:17And when he had taken some bread and
- 6:19given thanks, he broke it and gave it to
- 6:21them saying, "This is my body which is
- 6:24given for you. Do this in remembrance of
- 6:28me."
- 6:29And in the same way he took the cup
- 6:31after they had eaten saying,
- 6:33"This cup which is poured out for you is
- 6:37the new covenant in my blood."
- 6:40This is the new covenant Jeremiah spoke
- 6:42of in Jeremiah 31. "I will make a new
- 6:45covenant," says the Lord, "with the
- 6:46house of Israel, not like the one I made
- 6:49of old where they each said each one to
- 6:51his neighbor, 'Know the Lord.' The new
- 6:53covenant, they will all know me. They
- 6:55will all have fellowship, koinonia,
- 6:58communion, oneness with the Lord."
- 7:02This is the cup of the new covenant in
- 7:05my blood. Behold, the hand of the one
- 7:07betraying me is with mine on the table.
- 7:12In the other gospels, they ask, "Lord,
- 7:14is it I? Lord, is it I?" It says they
- 7:16all ask. And in the other gospels, it
- 7:19says he it gives another detail. It
- 7:21says, "The one who dips with me in the
- 7:24bowl."
- 7:25The one who's lost his honor. The one
- 7:27who's presumptuous. The one who doesn't
- 7:30wait his turn and let Jesus go first.
- 7:33The one who's doing it at the same time
- 7:35as the Lord. Now this time it says the
- 7:37one whose hand is on the table with me.
- 7:40It's a
- 7:41it's a subtle hint of the kind of
- 7:44brazenness that I think had come into
- 7:47the heart of Judas.
- 7:49Behold the hand of the one betraying me
- 7:52is with mine on the table. And indeed
- 7:54the Son of Man is going
- 7:56as it has been determined, but woe to
- 7:59that man by whom he is betrayed.
- 8:03And they began to discuss among
- 8:04themselves which of them it might be who
- 8:07was going to do this thing.
- 8:10And there arose also a dispute among
- 8:13them as to which of them was regarded to
- 8:16be the greatest.
- 8:18I mean, it never stops. Through every
- 8:21phase of his ministry, it always returns
- 8:24to which of us is the greatest. And that
- 8:27is a disturbing signal
- 8:30that what the church is going to battle,
- 8:33what's going to interrupt communion,
- 8:36is envy,
- 8:38self-seeking,
- 8:40competition.
- 8:41Who's going to be the greatest?
- 8:44It's not just
- 8:46It's not just a funny thing. It's It's a
- 8:48warning to us.
- 8:51And he said to them, "The kings of the
- 8:53Gentiles lorded over them,
- 8:56and those who have authority over them
- 8:58are called benefactors.
- 9:00So, it's interesting that
- 9:03in the Gentile form of authority,
- 9:07benefactors, people who give you money,
- 9:10are the ones exerting authority over
- 9:11you.
- 9:13So, he's tying the
- 9:16welfare state to authoritarianism
- 9:19here.
- 9:20But he says, "But it is not this way
- 9:22with you,
- 9:23but the one who is the greatest among
- 9:25you must become like the youngest.
- 9:29And the And the leader like the servant.
- 9:33For who is greater?
- 9:35The one who reclines at the table, or
- 9:37the one who serves?
- 9:40Is it not the one who reclines at the
- 9:42table?
- 9:44But I am among you as the one who
- 9:46serves.
- 9:49You are those who have stood by me in my
- 9:52trials.
- 9:54And just as my father has granted me a
- 9:56kingdom,
- 9:57I grant you
- 10:01that you may eat and drink at my table
- 10:05in my kingdom, and you will sit on
- 10:08thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 10:11So in this, I think he's saying, first
- 10:14he's clearly telling us that the way
- 10:17authority works in the church is going
- 10:20to be utterly
- 10:21different than the way authority works
- 10:23in every other paradigm of authority.
- 10:27It's not lording it over people. It's
- 10:30earning people's trust through your love
- 10:33service to them.
- 10:35And you can lead them if they trust your
- 10:37love.
- 10:38And that he is taking the servant role.
- 10:41He's taking the role of feeding. He's
- 10:43taking the role of washing. And that's
- 10:45the role that leadership must fulfill.
- 10:48It's a total inversion of power
- 10:51dynamics. Everything they're seeking is
- 10:54not what they're going to find.
- 10:56But he tells them,
- 10:58"You are those who have stood by me in
- 11:00my trials."
- 11:02And that's an incredible compliment.
- 11:04He's saying, "Y'all have been with me."
- 11:06But he's about to say, "You're all going
- 11:08to flee. You're all going to run. You're
- 11:10about to encounter
- 11:12the one thing you don't yet have grace
- 11:14to withstand, and that is the imminent
- 11:17threat of death."
- 11:19He says, "Just as my father has granted
- 11:21me a kingdom, I grant you."
- 11:24So he's not saying, "I've got a kingdom
- 11:26and you're going to have one, too." He's
- 11:28going to say He's saying the authority
- 11:30that was given the son of man, the
- 11:32kingdom, the reign, the dominion that I
- 11:34have exercised throughout my whole
- 11:36ministry, I'm giving you that reign and
- 11:39dominion that you're going to exercise
- 11:41also, but it's not going to be the
- 11:43authority of the Gentiles, it's going to
- 11:45be the reign and the dominion of
- 11:47service.
- 11:48That you may eat and drink at my table.
- 11:51So that that you may have communion
- 11:53with Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
- 11:56Behold, I stand at the door and knock,
- 11:58he says in Revelations, if anyone opens
- 12:00to me, I will come in and dine with him.
- 12:03So this is the idea that we can have
- 12:05ongoing communion with Jesus,
- 12:08but it's the communion in the kingdom.
- 12:11That you may eat and drink at my table
- 12:14and you will sit on thrones judging the
- 12:1512 tribes of Israel.
- 12:18This represents that the 12 apostles of
- 12:20the lamb,
- 12:22their names are inscribed on the
- 12:24foundation of the new city. Their
- 12:26sacrifice, their ministry, their
- 12:28example, and their teachings are the
- 12:31standard and judge for the new kingdom
- 12:35that we are part of to this day.
- 12:37And then his very next words, verse 31,
- 12:40Simon, Simon,
- 12:42behold, Satan has demanded permission to
- 12:46sift you like wheat.
- 12:49But I have prayed for you
- 12:51that your faith may not fail.
- 12:54And you,
- 12:56when once you have turned again,
- 12:58strengthen your brothers.
- 13:01This is deeply disturbing because
- 13:04the immediate
- 13:08precursor to this
- 13:10is that one of you is a betrayer.
- 13:13And then they all ask, Lord, is it I?
- 13:16And then the first person to get singled
- 13:18out is Simon.
- 13:21And he
- 13:22Satan has entered somebody's heart and
- 13:25Jesus is saying to Simon, Satan has
- 13:28asked to sift you like wheat."
- 13:31But he says, "But
- 13:33I have prayed for you that your faith
- 13:36would not fail."
- 13:37This is actually telling us what went
- 13:40wrong with Judas.
- 13:42What went wrong with Judas is not that
- 13:45he was too weak. Peter was as as weak.
- 13:48What went wrong with Judas is not that
- 13:50he fell into temptation. Peter fell into
- 13:52temptation.
- 13:54What went wrong is that he lost his
- 13:57faith. He gave up on that confidence,
- 14:01that assurance, that conviction that God
- 14:04was in control even when everything was
- 14:07going awry.
- 14:09And Jesus is telling him, "You're going
- 14:11to be sifted.
- 14:13But what's going to be taken out
- 14:16is not the germ of your faith in God.
- 14:20What's going to be taken out is all the
- 14:21chaff of your faith in self.
- 14:24And what's going to be left is your
- 14:26faith in God."
- 14:28"Simon, Simon, Satan [clears throat] has
- 14:30demanded permission to sift you like
- 14:32wheat, but I have prayed for you that
- 14:34your faith may not fail. And you, when
- 14:37you have once turned again, strengthen
- 14:40your brothers." So he's telling him,
- 14:43"You're going to be sifted, but I'm
- 14:45telling you right now, you're also going
- 14:47to come through.
- 14:49And when you come through, you're going
- 14:51to be the one to help your brothers. You
- 14:53think I'm singling you out. You think
- 14:55I'm saying you're the weakest one in the
- 14:57bunch, but you're actually going to be
- 14:58the first to strengthen them because
- 15:01you're going to get rid of the chaff of
- 15:03your self-confidence."
- 15:06But he, Peter, said to him, "Lord,
- 15:09with you I am ready
- 15:12to go both to prison and to death."
- 15:16Here's the self-confidence.
- 15:18"I am ready."
- 15:20You are not ready.
- 15:22And he said, I say to you, Peter,
- 15:26the rooster will not crow today
- 15:29until you have denied three times that
- 15:32you know me.
- 15:35And he said to them,
- 15:36when I sent you out without money belt
- 15:38and bag and sandals, you did not lack
- 15:41anything, did you?
- 15:43They said, "No, nothing."
- 15:47And he said to them,
- 15:48"But now, whoever has a money belt is to
- 15:51take it along.
- 15:53Likewise also a bag. And whoever has no
- 15:56sword is to sell his coat and buy one.
- 15:59For I tell you that this
- 16:02which is written must be fulfilled in
- 16:04me.
- 16:06And he was numbered with transgressors.
- 16:10For that which refers to me has its
- 16:13fulfillment."
- 16:15They said, "Lord, look, here are two
- 16:17swords." And he said to them, "It is
- 16:20enough."
- 16:22So he says,
- 16:23"I have been the manifestation of God's
- 16:27spirit while with you. I've been with
- 16:30you.
- 16:31But my spirit is not yet in you.
- 16:33So now that I'm going to physically be
- 16:35taken away, you need to go back to the
- 16:38crutches you once leaned upon without
- 16:40me.
- 16:41Because there's no hope of walking
- 16:43faithful when I'm not physically being
- 16:46that help to you because you haven't yet
- 16:48received the Holy Spirit. It hasn't been
- 16:50internalized. As he would say in John's
- 16:53gospel about the Holy Spirit, he has
- 16:56been with you, but he will be in you. So
- 16:58here he's saying, go back. Go back to
- 17:01your reliance on money. Go back to your
- 17:03reliance on violence.
- 17:05And he's saying it as a he's bewailing
- 17:08this fact. He's not celebrating it. He's
- 17:11not sanctioning the use of violence.
- 17:13He's saying, "Because this is going to
- 17:15happen, I'm going to be numbered with
- 17:18transgressors.
- 17:19This is you turning back to sin.
- 17:22This is you He's no more sanctioning
- 17:24this than he is sanctioning Peter's
- 17:26betrayal. He's declaring it as an
- 17:29inevitability.
- 17:31You see?
- 17:33For I tell you that this
- 17:35fulfills what is written, he will be
- 17:37numbered with the transgressors. So,
- 17:39he's even indicating that this is how
- 17:41Peter's going to fail.
- 17:43When Peter reaches in his
- 17:46belt and pulls out his sword and cuts
- 17:48off the servant's ear,
- 17:50Peter is entering into temptation.
- 17:53The very thing Jesus said, pray lest you
- 17:55enter in. He's entering into it. He's
- 17:57going to enter into it worse at
- 17:59Caiaphas's courtyard, but he's entering
- 18:01into that reliance on the flesh. And
- 18:04it's specifically the sword usage
- 18:07that Jesus marks as transgression.
- 18:11Numbered with the transgressors.
- 18:14And he came out
- 18:16and proceeded,
- 18:18as was his custom, to the Mount of
- 18:20Olives. And the disciples also followed
- 18:22him.
- 18:24When he arrived at the place,
- 18:27he said to them, "Pray [clears throat]
- 18:29that you may not enter into temptation."
- 18:34And he withdrew from them about a
- 18:35stone's throw, and he knelt down and
- 18:38began to pray, saying, "Father,
- 18:41if you are willing,
- 18:43remove this cup from me.
- 18:45Yet not my will,
- 18:47but yours be done."
- 18:50Now an angel from heaven appeared to him
- 18:51strengthening him.
- 18:53And being in agony, he was praying very
- 18:57fervently.
- 18:58And his sweat became like drops of blood
- 19:02falling down upon the ground.
- 19:05When he arose from prayer, he came to
- 19:07the disciples and found them sleeping
- 19:09from sorrow.
- 19:10And said to them,
- 19:12"Why are you sleeping?
- 19:14Get up and pray
- 19:16that you may not enter into temptation."
- 19:19This reveals the essence of the cross.
- 19:23The surrender of our will to God's will.
- 19:27To do it God's way.
- 19:29To do it no matter the cost. This is the
- 19:31real death
- 19:33that he suffers.
- 19:34And and the whole process in the garden
- 19:37is to not enter into temptation,
- 19:40which is to say, the devil has a series
- 19:44of
- 19:45temptations for Jesus that are about to
- 19:47begin.
- 19:49And the essence of the devil's
- 19:51temptation is to see
- 19:54whether Jesus is controlled through his
- 19:57fear of death
- 19:58like every other creature controlled by
- 20:00Satan is, like Peter still is.
- 20:04And so, in all the prompts, in all the
- 20:08the taunting, the mockery, the spitting,
- 20:10the punching, the beating his head with
- 20:12a reed, smashing a crown of thorns onto
- 20:16his brow, nailing him to a tree, is
- 20:19Jesus
- 20:21is Jesus going to react and reveal that
- 20:25he is that caged animal
- 20:28or is he going to reveal that there is a
- 20:30trust that supersedes
- 20:33all the torments of the devil and that
- 20:35he is not
- 20:37bound and controlled as a slave to his
- 20:40fear of death.
- 20:42That is the essence of Satan's control.
- 20:45So, that is the essence of the
- 20:46temptation that he is prevailing to
- 20:49overcome in the garden. He is saying,
- 20:52"Your will be done, even if your will is
- 20:57me submitting to something that is
- 20:58unjust.
- 21:00Even if it's me submitting to liars, to
- 21:02blasphemers, to haters, to mockers, come
- 21:05down from the cross."
- 21:07The essence of the cross is saying,
- 21:10"God, I'm going to let you win
- 21:13through my surrendered will, even in
- 21:15this counterintuitive way."
- 21:18It says that he prayed fervently until
- 21:21his sweat
- 21:23became like great drops of blood falling
- 21:26to the ground. And
- 21:28when someone exerts intensely, the blood
- 21:32vessels in their skin will sometimes
- 21:35burst.
- 21:36And there can be blood mixed with sweat
- 21:38through an incredible exertion.
- 21:41But his exertion was not an exertion of
- 21:43human will. It was an exertion
- 21:46to crucify the human will, to lose the
- 21:49human will in surrender to the divine
- 21:51will.
- 21:53While he was still speaking, behold, a
- 21:56crowd came.
- 21:58And the one called Judas,
- 22:00one of the 12,
- 22:02was preceding them.
- 22:04And he approached Jesus to kiss him.
- 22:07Judas is the only one of the 12 who is
- 22:10not from Galilee.
- 22:12He's from a region in Judea
- 22:14[clears throat]
- 22:15that is pious and zealous.
- 22:19And so he's he's superior to the rest.
- 22:23And his name is Judah, Yuda, meaning
- 22:27Jew. And so he represents the betrayal
- 22:32of
- 22:33God's people against the Lord. He
- 22:36represents
- 22:37as when Joseph's brothers sold him for
- 22:4030 pieces of silver. Judah was the one,
- 22:45you know, who was who was allowing that
- 22:46to happen. And and in the same way, he
- 22:50is betraying him. He is
- 22:52he is saying, "Our people, our system
- 22:56that was
- 22:58created by God, loved by God, covenanted
- 23:00with God, it is rejecting God.
- 23:04>> [snorts]
- 23:04>> And he comes
- 23:06and he approaches Jesus to kiss him.
- 23:10And this is in Luke's version, it just
- 23:12means a a show of affection.
- 23:15So, he he's basically coming and saying,
- 23:17"I still love you. I'm just doing what
- 23:19is right, right?"
- 23:22Jesus said to him,
- 23:24"Judas,
- 23:25are you betraying the Son of Man with a
- 23:27kiss?"
- 23:30When those who were around him saw what
- 23:32was going to happen, they said,
- 23:34"Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
- 23:38And one of them
- 23:40>> [clears throat]
- 23:40>> apparently didn't wait for his answer,
- 23:42struck the slave of the high priest and
- 23:44cut off his ear.
- 23:47But Jesus answered and said, "Stop."
- 23:51So, before that he could even answer,
- 23:53Peter
- 23:54used his sword.
- 23:55Jesus answered, "Stop. No more of this."
- 24:01And he touched his ear and healed him.
- 24:04Then Jesus said to the chief priests and
- 24:06officers of the temple and elders who
- 24:08had come against him,
- 24:11"Have you come out with swords and clubs
- 24:14as you would against a robber?
- 24:16While I was with you daily in the
- 24:18temple, you did not lay hands on me,
- 24:21but this hour
- 24:23and the power of darkness are yours."
- 24:28So, he's acknowledging, "I am
- 24:30encountering the power of the devil
- 24:33through these people. It's not just the
- 24:35hour of darkness, it's the hour and the
- 24:37power of darkness are yours."
- 24:40Having arrested him,
- 24:42>> [clears throat]
- 24:42>> they led him away and brought him to the
- 24:44house of the high priest,
- 24:46but Peter was following at a distance.
- 24:49After they had kindled a fire in the
- 24:51middle of the courtyard and sat down
- 24:54together, Peter was sitting among them.
- 24:57And a servant girl seeing him as he sat
- 25:01in the firelight and looking intently at
- 25:03him said, "This man was with him, too."
- 25:08But he denied it saying, "Woman, I do
- 25:11not know him."
- 25:13There's the first time.
- 25:15A little later another saw him and said,
- 25:18"You are one of them, too."
- 25:21But Peter said, "Man, I am not."
- 25:26After about an hour had passed, another
- 25:28man began to insist saying, "Certainly,
- 25:31this man also was with him, for he is a
- 25:34Galilean, too."
- 25:36But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what
- 25:39you are talking about."
- 25:42Immediately, while he was still
- 25:44speaking, a rooster crowed.
- 25:47The Lord turned and looked at Peter.
- 25:52And Peter remembered the word of the
- 25:55Lord, how he had told him, "Before the
- 25:58rooster crows today, you will deny me
- 26:01three times."
- 26:02And he went [music] out and wept
- 26:04bitterly.
- 26:06Now the men who were holding Jesus in
- 26:08custody were mocking him and beating
- 26:11him. And they blindfolded him and were
- 26:14asking him saying, "Prophesy, [music]
- 26:17who is the one who hits you?"
- 26:19And they were saying many other things
- 26:22against him, blaspheming.
- 26:27Jesus turned and looked at Peter.
- 26:30Not to say, "I told you so."
- 26:33But to say, "Peter,
- 26:35you're astonished.
- 26:37You're disappointed, but I'm not.
- 26:40I know who you are, and I called you,
- 26:44and I knew this was going to happen, but
- 26:46I also know you're going to come through
- 26:47this."
- 26:49And Peter went out and wept bitterly,
- 26:52and this is the [music] weeping of
- 26:53repentance.
- 26:54The crashing and crumbling
- 26:57of the edifice of self, self-strength,
- 27:00self-confidence, [music]
- 27:02self-evaluation.
- 27:04That's what's breaking in Peter.
- 27:06And that's what, thank God, he never
- 27:08recovers.
- 27:11When it was day,
- 27:13the council of elders of the people
- 27:15assembled, both chief priests and
- 27:17scribes, and they led him away to their
- 27:20council chamber, [music] saying,
- 27:23"If you are the Messiah, the Christ,
- 27:25tell us."
- 27:26But he said to them, "If I tell [music]
- 27:28you, you will not believe.
- 27:31And if I ask a question, you will not
- 27:33answer.
- 27:34But from now on,
- 27:36the Son of Man will be seated at the
- 27:38right hand of the power of God."
- 27:41And they all said, [music]
- 27:43"Are you the Son of God, then?"
- 27:46And he said to them, "Yes, I am."
- 27:48[music]
- 27:50Then they said, "What further need do we
- 27:52have of testimony?
- 27:54For we have heard it ourselves from his
- 27:57own mouth."
- 28:00>> [music]
- 28:07[music]
