- 0:00Luke 2:1
- 0:02Now in those days a decree went out from
- 0:05Caesar Augustus that a census be taken
- 0:08of all the inhabited earth. This was the
- 0:11first census taken while Corinius was
- 0:14governor of Syria. This was the first
- 0:17census taken while Corinius was governor
- 0:20of Syria. And everyone was on his way to
- 0:23register for the census,
- 0:25each to his own city.
- 0:28Joseph also went up from Galilee, from
- 0:31the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the
- 0:34city of David, which is called
- 0:36Bethlehem, because he was of the house
- 0:39and family of David. In order to
- 0:42register along with Mary, who was
- 0:45engaged to him and was with child.
- 0:49While they were there, the days were
- 0:51completed for her to give birth. and she
- 0:54gave birth to her firstborn son, and she
- 0:58wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a
- 1:01manger, because there was no room for
- 1:03them in the inn.
- 1:06In the same region, there were some
- 1:08shepherds staying out in the fields and
- 1:11keeping watch over their flock by night.
- 1:14And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood
- 1:17before them, and the glory of the Lord
- 1:20shone around them, and they were
- 1:23terribly frightened.
- 1:25But the angel said to them,
- 1:27"Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring
- 1:31you good news of great joy, which will
- 1:34be for all people.
- 1:37For today in the city of David, there is
- 1:41born for you a Savior who is Christ the
- 1:45Lord.
- 1:47This will be a sign for you. You will
- 1:50find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying
- 1:53in a manger.
- 1:55And suddenly there appeared with the
- 1:57angel a multitude of heavenly hosts
- 2:01praising God and saying, "Glory to God
- 2:04in the highest and on earth, peace among
- 2:08men with whom he is pleased."
- 2:11When the angels had gone away from them
- 2:13into heaven, the shepherds began saying
- 2:16to one another, "Let us go straight to
- 2:19Bethlehem then and see this thing that
- 2:22has happened which the Lord has made
- 2:24known to us." So they came in a hurry
- 2:27and found their way to Mary and Joseph
- 2:30and the baby as he lay in the manger.
- 2:35When they had seen this, they made known
- 2:38the statement which had been told them
- 2:40about this child.
- 2:43And all who heard it wondered at the
- 2:45things which were told them by the
- 2:47shepherds.
- 2:49But Mary treasured all these things,
- 2:51pondering them in her heart. The
- 2:54shepherds went back glorifying and
- 2:56praising God for all that they had heard
- 3:00and seen just as had been told them.
- 3:06So this is a phenomenal story. Again,
- 3:10Luke is very detailed. He tells us that
- 3:14the census was issued by Caesar
- 3:18Augustus. He tells us it's while the
- 3:22Roman general Corinius was governor of
- 3:25Syria, which would have meant that he
- 3:27was uh a governor general, probably a
- 3:30temporary, not a political post, but a
- 3:32military post, martial law imposed for a
- 3:36season. He tells us that the census
- 3:39required them to go back to their
- 3:41hometown, which has some precedent even
- 3:44in historical documents.
- 3:47And then he tells us that there was no
- 3:50room in the inn, so they ended up
- 3:53staying in a barn. He tells us that
- 3:55Jesus was born in a manger. These are
- 3:58all incredible details.
- 4:01And then he tells us that God first
- 4:04announced the birth of his Messiah to
- 4:07shepherds. In the days of Jesus,
- 4:09shepherds were the least likely to be
- 4:13the witness of the Messiah. They were
- 4:15not considered to be honest. They were
- 4:19considered to exaggerate.
- 4:21And so if this was a fictional story or
- 4:25if God was trying to announce himself
- 4:29through the elite, he would never say
- 4:32that he sent the word through shepherds.
- 4:35But God is trying to spread the hope
- 4:38through the hopeless people. So, he's
- 4:41not at all embarrassed to send Mary
- 4:43Magdalene as the first from the tomb of
- 4:46his resurrection or to send the
- 4:48shepherds as the first to herald what
- 4:51has happened. He's trying to say, "I
- 4:55don't need your political systems. I
- 4:59don't need your status. I don't need
- 5:01your power, politics, and elites. I just
- 5:05need people who have faith." and it will
- 5:08become greater and more beautiful and
- 5:10real than all the politics and power of
- 5:13man.
- 5:15And then we have these details where it
- 5:18says that Mary treasured all these
- 5:22things, pondering them in her heart.
- 5:23Again, this sounds like all these
- 5:26details could have only come from Mary.
- 5:29And it points to the fact that Luke was
- 5:32interviewing Mary in writing his story.
- 5:35And when eight days had passed before
- 5:38his circumcision,
- 5:40his name was then called Jesus, Yeshua.
- 5:45The name given by the angel before he
- 5:48was conceived in the womb. Jesus
- 5:52Yeshua in Hebrew
- 5:55is
- 5:56where we get the word Joshua.
- 6:00And of course in Hebrew they don't say
- 6:03the sounds J. they would say the sound
- 6:06Yah. So it wouldn't sound like Joshua.
- 6:09It would sound like Yeshua.
- 6:12And Yesua is the
- 6:16conjunction. It's the combining of two
- 6:18words. Yah,
- 6:21which means Yahweh, like hallelujah,
- 6:25and Hosa, which means salvation.
- 6:31When God first spoke to Moses at the
- 6:34burning bush, Moses said, "Who are you?
- 6:37Who shall I say is sending me?" And the
- 6:40Lord told him, "I am Yahweh."
- 6:43And he says, "This is my name forever."
- 6:47And it means I am what I am. And it also
- 6:51means I will become whatsoever I will
- 6:53become. So, it's this God who has being
- 6:59in himself and is determined to become
- 7:02what we need in order to be like him.
- 7:06And so throughout the ages, Yahweh
- 7:10became their provider, El Shadai. Yahweh
- 7:13became their healing, Yahweh Rafa.
- 7:17Yahweh became their peace, Yahweh
- 7:19shalom. Yahweh became their
- 7:22righteousness, Yahweh.
- 7:25But in the end, Yahweh became salvation,
- 7:29Yeshua.
- 7:30And so it says, "You will call his name
- 7:33Jesus, Yeshua, for he will save his
- 7:36people from their sins."
- 7:38So they were explicitly tying the name
- 7:41Yeshua to saving,
- 7:44showing that the name Yeshua means
- 7:47Yahweh and salvation. Yahweh becomes
- 7:50salvation.
- 7:52And when the eight days had passed
- 7:54before his circumcision, his name was
- 7:56then called Yeshua, Jesus, the name
- 8:00given by the angel before he was
- 8:02conceived in the womb. And when the days
- 8:05for their purification according to the
- 8:07law of Moses were completed, they
- 8:10brought him up to Jerusalem to present
- 8:12him to the Lord. As it is written in the
- 8:16law of the Lord, every firstborn male
- 8:18that opens the womb shall be called holy
- 8:22to the Lord
- 8:24and to offer a sacrifice according to
- 8:26what was said in the law of the Lord, a
- 8:29pair of turtle doves or two young
- 8:32pigeons.
- 8:34And there was a man in Jerusalem whose
- 8:37name was Simeon.
- 8:40And this man was righteous and devout
- 8:44looking for the consolation of Israel
- 8:47and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
- 8:51So there was a prophet, there was a holy
- 8:53man in Jerusalem who was looking for the
- 8:57consolation of Israel, which means he
- 8:59was looking for salvation. He was
- 9:01looking for the appearance of the
- 9:02Messiah.
- 9:05And it had been revealed to him to
- 9:07Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would
- 9:09not see death before he had seen the
- 9:13Lord's Messiah.
- 9:16And he came in the spirit into the
- 9:18temple. And when the parents brought in
- 9:22the child Jesus to carry out for him the
- 9:25custom of the law, then he Simeon took
- 9:28him into his arms and blessed God and
- 9:33said,
- 9:35"Now, Lord, you are releasing your
- 9:38bondervant to depart in peace
- 9:42according to your word, for my eyes have
- 9:46seen your salvation, Yeshua.
- 9:50which you have prepared in the presence
- 9:52of all peoples,
- 9:55a light of revelation to the Gentiles,
- 9:58and the glory of your people Israel."
- 10:03And his father and mother were amazed at
- 10:06the things which were being said about
- 10:08him.
- 10:10And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary
- 10:13his mother, "Behold, this child is
- 10:18appointed for the fall and rise of many
- 10:22in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed,
- 10:28and a sword will pierce even your own
- 10:30soul to the end that the thoughts from
- 10:34many hearts may be revealed."
- 10:38So this man's been waiting for the
- 10:40Messiah. And when he sees Jesus and he
- 10:44says, "Now I can die because my eyes
- 10:48have seen your salvation
- 10:53which you have prepared in the presence
- 10:55of all people. And it's a light of
- 10:59revelation to the Gentiles." God is
- 11:01going to turn the light of truth on for
- 11:04the Gentiles. The Gentiles didn't have
- 11:07the scriptures. The Gentiles didn't have
- 11:09the covenant. The Gentiles didn't have
- 11:12relationship with the one true God of
- 11:14Israel. But that light is going to go on
- 11:17and it's going to be the glory to his
- 11:20people, Israel, which means the presence
- 11:22of God is going to come and dwell among
- 11:26mortal human flesh. That's the glory of
- 11:29Israel.
- 11:31And then he says this. He says uh this
- 11:35child is appointed for the fall and rise
- 11:40of many in Israel. He's just said that
- 11:42he's going to be the glory of Israel.
- 11:43But he says this child is going to make
- 11:46some people fall.
- 11:48His life is going to be so powerful and
- 11:51it's going to be so decisive, so
- 11:54controversial that some people are going
- 11:57to rise up in power. They're going to be
- 12:00changed. They're going to be renewed.
- 12:02They're going to be saved. And others
- 12:04are going to crash.
- 12:06They're going to be offended.
- 12:09They're going to slander. They're going
- 12:10to blaspheme. They're going to hate.
- 12:13They're going to murder.
- 12:16And he says he will be a sign to be
- 12:19opposed.
- 12:21People are going to try to stop this
- 12:24witness. People are going to oppose this
- 12:27evidence. They're going to try to kill
- 12:30this undeniable sign from God of what
- 12:33God is doing.
- 12:35Now, this is a word to Jesus and about
- 12:38Jesus, but it's also a word about any
- 12:41authentic expression of his body.
- 12:45When people encounter Christ, even among
- 12:48his people,
- 12:50they're going to, some are going to be
- 12:52very encouraged. They're going to rise
- 12:54up in blessing. others are going to be
- 12:56offended and they're going to oppose it.
- 12:59And then he he tells Mary whom he's just
- 13:02blessed, he says, "A sword will pierce
- 13:05even your own soul."
- 13:09Do you think a sword pierced Mary's soul
- 13:11when she heard Jesus say, "Who is my
- 13:15mother?"
- 13:16and realized that she had gotten
- 13:20offended at him and thought he had lost
- 13:22his mind when she and the relatives went
- 13:24to take him because he'd gone crazy and
- 13:27he said, "Who is my mother?" You think a
- 13:30sword pierced her heart?
- 13:33You think if a sword pierced her heart
- 13:36when he was at the wedding at Kaa and
- 13:39said,"Woman,
- 13:41my time has not yet come."
- 13:44You think a sword pierced her heart when
- 13:47she saw him hanging naked, nailed to a
- 13:51cross and saying, "Mother, behold your
- 13:56son. And son, behold your mother." And
- 13:58putting her into the care of John.
- 14:02Yes. But a sword also pierced her heart
- 14:05when she saw him raised from the dead.
- 14:08and a sword also pierced her heart when
- 14:10on the day of Pentecost she understood
- 14:13the glory that had been promised to
- 14:15Israel and she was part of it. She was
- 14:18there.
- 14:20People can say many things about their
- 14:22intentions, about their honor for God,
- 14:25but when they encounter an undeniable
- 14:28witness of his grace, their thoughts are
- 14:33revealed.
- 14:34They get off the fence. They're either
- 14:37going to rise or they're going to fall,
- 14:39but a sword is going to pierce their
- 14:41heart.
- 14:42And there was a prophetus Anna, the
- 14:45daughter of Fenuel of the tribe of
- 14:48Asher. She was advanced in years and had
- 14:52lived with her husband 7 years after her
- 14:55marriage and then as a widow to the age
- 14:59of 84.
- 15:01She never left the temple, serving night
- 15:04and day with fasting and prayers.
- 15:08At that very moment, she came up and
- 15:12began giving thanks to God and continued
- 15:15to speak of him to all those who were
- 15:18looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
- 15:23So Luke is telling us that there were
- 15:26two witnesses
- 15:28both who were servants in the temple. He
- 15:31is saying that the sanctuary and old
- 15:34worship
- 15:36of the Jewish people confirmed what God
- 15:40was doing through Jesus. Simeon and Anna
- 15:44and even Elizabeth and Zachcharias
- 15:48that he's telling us that it was
- 15:50consistent with what God had done
- 15:53before.
- 15:56When they had performed everything
- 15:58according to the law of the Lord, they
- 16:00returned to Galilee to their own city of
- 16:03Nazareth. The child continued to grow
- 16:05and become strong, increasing in wisdom,
- 16:09and the grace of God was upon him.
- 16:14Now his parents went to Jerusalem every
- 16:17year at the feast of the Passover. And
- 16:20when he became 12, they went up there
- 16:23according to the custom of the feast.
- 16:26And as they were returning after
- 16:28spending the full number of days, the
- 16:31boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
- 16:35But his parents were unaware of it,
- 16:38but supposed him to be in the caravan
- 16:41and went a day's journey, and they began
- 16:44looking for him among their relatives
- 16:47and acquaintances.
- 16:49When they did not find him, they
- 16:52returned to Jerusalem looking for him.
- 16:55Then after 3 days they found him in the
- 16:58temple sitting in the midst of the
- 17:00teachers both listening to them and
- 17:04asking them questions.
- 17:06And all who heard him were amazed at his
- 17:10understanding and his answers.
- 17:14When they saw him, they were astonished.
- 17:17And his mother said to him, "Son, why
- 17:20have you treated us this way? Behold,
- 17:23your father and I have been anxiously
- 17:26looking for you. I think most moms would
- 17:30be just that mad, if not angrier.
- 17:34And he said to them, "Why is it that you
- 17:37were looking for me?"
- 17:40Did you not know that I had to be in my
- 17:43father's house?
- 17:46But they did not understand the
- 17:48statement which he had made to them.
- 17:50and he went down with them and came to
- 17:53Nazareth. And he continued in subjection
- 17:57to them. And his mother treasured all
- 18:00these things in her heart. And Jesus
- 18:03kept increasing in wisdom and stature
- 18:08and in favor, meaning grace, with God
- 18:10and men.
- 18:13Again, this is such detailed
- 18:18information about family conversations
- 18:21and how Mary felt, what Mary was told by
- 18:26Simeon and details that she's the only
- 18:29common denominator. This has to be
- 18:31coming from her and what she told the
- 18:35writer Luke. Jesus is telling them that
- 18:38they should have expected that he would
- 18:40have been in his father's house. Um, but
- 18:43he doesn't elaborate and it does tell us
- 18:45that he was in subjection to them. He
- 18:49stayed submitted to his parents even
- 18:51though he upset them by staying in the
- 18:54sanctuary a little too long. He stayed
- 18:56obedient. He submitted to the form of
- 18:59relationships as a son to his parents.
