- 0:00Luke chapter 19 [music] verse 1.
- 0:03He, Jesus, entered Jericho
- 0:06and was passing through.
- 0:10And there was [music] a man
- 0:12called by the name of Zacchaeus,
- 0:16who was a chief
- 0:18tax collector,
- 0:19and he was rich.
- 0:22So, here we have again,
- 0:24Jesus is moving [music] through a
- 0:27region. He's doesn't have an intention
- 0:29to stop.
- 0:31And here again, we have someone who is a
- 0:34notorious sinner,
- 0:37someone who is
- 0:39equated with the Romans,
- 0:41with cheating, and with incredible
- 0:44[music] wealth.
- 0:45Remember with the rich young ruler,
- 0:47Jesus says, "It's easier for a camel to
- 0:50pass through the eye of a needle than
- 0:51[music] for a rich man to enter the
- 0:52kingdom of God." And they said, "Who can
- 0:55be saved?"
- 0:56So, everything now is telling us who can
- 0:58be saved, those who become like little
- 1:00children.
- 1:02He entered Jericho and was passing
- 1:04through, and there was a man called by
- 1:06the name of Zacchaeus. [music]
- 1:08He was a chief tax collector, and he was
- 1:11rich.
- 1:13Zacchaeus
- 1:15was trying to see who Jesus was.
- 1:21And he was unable
- 1:23because of the crowd,
- 1:25for he was small
- 1:26in stature.
- 1:29It does not say that he was trying to
- 1:30see Jesus. [music]
- 1:32It says he was trying to see who Jesus
- 1:36was.
- 1:37He wasn't trying to catch a glimpse of a
- 1:39man. He was trying to understand who the
- 1:41man really was.
- 1:44So, he ran ahead
- 1:46and climbed up into a sycamore tree in
- 1:50order to see him, for he was about to
- 1:53pass that [music] way.
- 1:55So, we have this man who is a chief tax
- 1:58collector. He's a man in power. He's
- 2:01very rich.
- 2:04And he wants to know who Jesus is.
- 2:07But, what does he behave like? Who
- 2:10climbs trees?
- 2:12Children.
- 2:14Who allows their excitement and their
- 2:16determination to figure something out?
- 2:19Who allows that to make them transcend
- 2:22themselves?
- 2:24And scramble up into a
- 2:26sycamore tree
- 2:28or a mulberry tree is one translation of
- 2:31it in order to
- 2:33see for themself
- 2:35who Jesus is. This is what it looks like
- 2:38to be a child.
- 2:40He ran ahead. He didn't saunter
- 2:43casually.
- 2:44He ran ahead and climbed up into a
- 2:48sycamore tree in order to see him, for
- 2:51he was about to pass through that way.
- 2:54When Jesus came to the place
- 2:57he looked up.
- 3:00God looks up to humility.
- 3:03God looks up to childlike faith.
- 3:07When Jesus came to the place, he looked
- 3:09up and said to him,
- 3:11"Zacchaeus, hurry
- 3:14and come down.
- 3:16For today
- 3:17I must stay at your house."
- 3:20Now, this is an example
- 3:22of Jesus completely changing his plans.
- 3:26Of faith intercepting
- 3:29the walk of God.
- 3:31He's walking through Jericho. He's
- 3:34passing by until he encounters someone
- 3:38with childlike faith.
- 3:41And he, Zacchaeus, hurried and came down
- 3:46and received him gladly.
- 3:50Now, that word gladly it means that he
- 3:53received him rejoicing.
- 3:57He is thrilled
- 3:59that he has not only seen him,
- 4:02he has seen who he is.
- 4:05He is someone who honors childlike
- 4:08faith, and he is thrilled that he's
- 4:10coming to his house.
- 4:12Receiving him
- 4:14rejoicing. What does that make you think
- 4:16of?
- 4:17A child.
- 4:19You're coming out of church and
- 4:22Mommy says, "Do you know who's coming
- 4:23over to dinner?"
- 4:26And it's someone that the kid is happy
- 4:28to see,
- 4:29they're going to be jumping up and down
- 4:31happy. Everyone else is like, "Oh,
- 4:33that's great."
- 4:35Zacchaeus
- 4:37is not poised.
- 4:40He's happy.
- 4:43When
- 4:44they saw it,
- 4:47who is they?
- 4:49In this story, we don't have a they.
- 4:51There's no they here.
- 4:53It's just that crowd of people who
- 4:55aren't childlike.
- 4:58It's just that mob of outsiders
- 5:00watching.
- 5:02When they saw it, they all began to
- 5:06grumble
- 5:08saying,
- 5:09"He has gone to be the guest of a man
- 5:12who is a sinner."
- 5:16Zacchaeus stopped.
- 5:20He doesn't get offended.
- 5:23He doesn't become a grumbler himself.
- 5:26He doesn't say, "How unfair. I just
- 5:29responded to God in faith, and people
- 5:32are doubting me."
- 5:34He stops.
- 5:37That means he was walking. He stops, and
- 5:40he says to the Lord,
- 5:42he does not say anything to the
- 5:44grumblers. He does not say anything to
- 5:46the doubters.
- 5:48But he knows that what they're saying is
- 5:50true.
- 5:52And he lets even their doubt convict
- 5:55him.
- 5:56So he stops, and he says to the Lord,
- 5:59"Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I
- 6:03will give to the poor.
- 6:05And if I have defrauded anyone of
- 6:08anything, I will give back four times as
- 6:11much."
- 6:14He has an audience with the Messiah.
- 6:19And so he's ready to sell half of his
- 6:22possessions, and he's well ready to
- 6:24right his wrongs with a four-times
- 6:27payback.
- 6:29But he is not ready to lose
- 6:32his connection with Jesus.
- 6:36He stopped,
- 6:37and he talked to the Lord, not the
- 6:39grumblers.
- 6:40And he promised to immediately
- 6:44act on the reform that God was bringing
- 6:46in his life. [clears throat]
- 6:49And Jesus said to him,
- 6:52"What has Zacchaeus said to the
- 6:53grumblers?
- 6:55Nothing.
- 6:56What has Jesus said to the grumblers?
- 6:58Nothing.
- 7:00Jesus says to him,
- 7:03'Today
- 7:05salvation has come to this house.' They
- 7:09must have been right outside the door.
- 7:11'Today salvation has come to this
- 7:14house.'
- 7:15And then he says to them,
- 7:17'Because he too
- 7:20is a son of Abraham.'
- 7:24Abraham is a man of faith.
- 7:27Abraham was a man who got up on a roof
- 7:30and listened until he heard the voice of
- 7:32God.
- 7:33Abraham was a man who got up and walked
- 7:36out of his country, his people, and his
- 7:38father's house.
- 7:40Abraham was a man who acted now,
- 7:44immediately in response to the voice of
- 7:46God. And Zacchaeus, with all of his
- 7:49past, and all of his failures, and all
- 7:52of his hang-ups, and all of his
- 7:54reputation, has just proven that he,
- 7:56too, is a son of Abraham.
- 7:58Because he acts with childlike faith.
- 8:04He, too, is a son of Abraham, for the
- 8:06Son of Man
- 8:08has come to seek and save that which was
- 8:12lost.
- 8:17While they were listening to these
- 8:20things
- 8:22about Zacchaeus,
- 8:25Jesus went on to tell a parable
- 8:28because he was near Jerusalem,
- 8:30and they supposed that the kingdom of
- 8:32God
- 8:33was going to appear
- 8:35immediately.
- 8:38So, here we have it.
- 8:41Everybody is interested in Jesus because
- 8:44they believe he's the Messiah.
- 8:46But all the gospels are telling us that
- 8:48the crowd following him imagines
- 8:52that his Messianic work
- 8:54will equal freeing them from the
- 8:57oppression of Rome.
- 8:59And so, they think that the kingdom is
- 9:02about to appear. Why? Because he's about
- 9:05to show up in Jerusalem.
- 9:07And they know that when the Messiah
- 9:09comes, he's going to take his throne in
- 9:12Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the capital of
- 9:14Israel.
- 9:15And so, they're thinking, "Okay, guys,
- 9:18this is about to happen.
- 9:20Jesus is about to come into Jerusalem.
- 9:23He's probably going to be riding a white
- 9:25horse.
- 9:26It's going to be pretty glorious.
- 9:28And we're going to see what we've been
- 9:30waiting for
- 9:32for
- 9:33four centuries."
- 9:37Because he was Jerusalem, and they
- 9:39supposed [clears throat] the kingdom of
- 9:40God was going to appear immediately, he
- 9:42told them this parable.
- 9:45He said, "A nobleman
- 9:48went to a distant country
- 9:50to receive a kingdom for himself
- 9:53and then return.
- 9:56And he called 10 of his slaves
- 10:00and gave them 10 minas and said to them,
- 10:04'Do business with this
- 10:07until I come back.'
- 10:12But his citizens hated him
- 10:15and sent a delegation after him saying,
- 10:18'We do not want this man to reign over
- 10:20us.'
- 10:23When he returned after receiving the
- 10:25kingdom, he ordered that these slaves to
- 10:28whom he had given the money be called to
- 10:30him so that he might know what business
- 10:33they had done.
- 10:36The first appeared saying, 'Master, your
- 10:38mina has made 10 minas more.'
- 10:42And he said to him, 'Well done, good
- 10:43slave, because you have been faithful in
- 10:46a very little thing, you are to be in
- 10:48authority over 10 cities.'
- 10:51The second came saying, 'Your mina,
- 10:54master, has made five minas.' And he
- 10:56said to him also,
- 10:59'You are to be over five cities.'
- 11:02And another came saying, 'Master, here
- 11:04is your mina,
- 11:06which I kept put away in a handkerchief.
- 11:12For I was afraid of you,
- 11:16because you are an exacting man.
- 11:19You take up what you did not lay down,
- 11:22and you reap what you did not sow.'
- 11:26He said to him, 'By your own words I
- 11:29will judge you, you worthless slave.
- 11:33Did you know that I am an exacting man
- 11:35taking up what I did not lay down and
- 11:37reaping what I did not sow?
- 11:40Then, why did you not put my money in
- 11:43the bank?
- 11:44And having come, I would have collected
- 11:47it with interest.
- 11:49Then he said to the bystanders, "Take
- 11:51the mina away from him,
- 11:53and give it to the one who has 10
- 11:56minas."
- 11:59And they, the bystanders, said to him,
- 12:01"Master,
- 12:02he has 10 minas already."
- 12:07I tell you that to everyone who has,
- 12:10more shall be given.
- 12:12But from the one who does not have, even
- 12:15what he does have shall be taken away.
- 12:18But these enemies of mine, who did not
- 12:20want me to reign over them, bring them
- 12:23here and slay them in my presence."
- 12:27So, this is a parable, and Jesus tells
- 12:30different versions of this same parable
- 12:32in the gospels.
- 12:34But it's a parable
- 12:36by which he's trying to tell them the
- 12:38kingdom of God is not what you're
- 12:40expecting.
- 12:42He's told them in the previous chapter,
- 12:44"The kingdom is of God is within you."
- 12:47Remember?
- 12:49So, now he's showing them, "I'm not
- 12:51going to march into Jerusalem
- 12:53and set up a worldly political system
- 12:56in one afternoon.
- 12:58Instead,
- 13:00I'm going to go on a long journey. I'm
- 13:02going to go back to heaven.
- 13:04But I am going to give you gifts,
- 13:07gifts of the Spirit poured out at
- 13:09Pentecost. And I'm going to deposit
- 13:11these in the church. I'm going to put
- 13:12these in every single life.
- 13:16And those gifts of my spirit, of my
- 13:18grace,
- 13:19those are going to represent
- 13:22a talent.
- 13:24We call gifts a a gifts or a talent. We
- 13:27use them interchangeably, but in Jesus'
- 13:29day talent meant a weight of money.
- 13:32Okay?
- 13:33But he's saying the currency, the power
- 13:36to grow the kingdom is not coins. It's
- 13:40not gold or silver.
- 13:43It's the grace.
- 13:44It's the gifts of the spirit that God
- 13:48has placed in each person.
- 13:51And he says that he's going to go on a
- 13:52long journey, but before he does he's
- 13:54going to invest it.
- 13:56And if we can be faithful in multiplying
- 14:00what he gave us,
- 14:02then we're going to be ready
- 14:04individually and as a people, we're
- 14:07going to be ready
- 14:09to help guide the kingdom when it
- 14:11reaches the scale that we are hoping
- 14:14for. Even though even then it will be
- 14:17not a political kingdom, but a spiritual
- 14:19kingdom.
- 14:20Do you understand?
- 14:22So,
- 14:23Judas had a mina.
- 14:26He had a gift. He was called to be an
- 14:27apostle.
- 14:29Was he investing that mina? Was he
- 14:31growing that mina? Was he using his
- 14:35faith and thereby increasing it like
- 14:37Jesus speaks of two chapters earlier?
- 14:40No.
- 14:41He had it buried.
- 14:43He was acting in fear. He was acting in
- 14:45unbelief.
- 14:47Now,
- 14:48why did the man
- 14:50who buried his talent, why did he bury
- 14:52it? Because he says, "I was afraid of
- 14:55you."
- 14:57And why was he afraid?
- 14:59He said, "God asks something of me that
- 15:02he hasn't given me the grace to do."
- 15:06Does God ever ask something of you that
- 15:08he hasn't given you the grace to do?
- 15:12When God asks the at the pool to
- 15:14stand up,
- 15:16does the have the strength by
- 15:18himself to stand up?
- 15:21Has God asked him to do the impossible?
- 15:23Yes.
- 15:24But with God all things are possible. He
- 15:27didn't ask him to do it by himself. He
- 15:29asked him to do it with the prevenient
- 15:31grace of the word spoken. And with that
- 15:34energizing word, if he had faith, he had
- 15:37the grace to do it.
- 15:39But if he had unbelief, did he have the
- 15:41grace to do it? No.
- 15:43So then he says, "Take away the talent
- 15:46from the one who
- 15:48has nothing."
- 15:50Now, which of the three had nothing?
- 15:55None of them had nothing.
- 15:58All of them were given something.
- 16:00But he says, "Take it away from the one
- 16:02who has nothing and give it to the one
- 16:04who has the most."
- 16:07You say, "Well, that doesn't seem fair."
- 16:09That's what the They responded, "Lord,
- 16:11he already has five."
- 16:13Why would you Why would you give it? Now
- 16:15he's turned it into 10. Why would you
- 16:17give him that?
- 16:18And Jesus says,
- 16:20"To him who has, more will be given.
- 16:24But to him who does not have, even what
- 16:26he does have will be taken away."
- 16:28You're like, "Does not have? Does have?"
- 16:32Well, in God's eyes, nobody has nothing.
- 16:37In God's eyes, everybody has been given
- 16:40enough.
- 16:41To each one has been given a measure of
- 16:44faith. The Apostle Paul says, "Everybody
- 16:48has enough to act, to grow,
- 16:51to exercise their faith and and honor
- 16:54God."
- 16:55But those who don't have, that just
- 16:57describes the perspective they have of
- 17:00themself.
- 17:02Those who say, "God's going to demand
- 17:04something of me that I don't have the
- 17:05power to give." That's a perspective of
- 17:07don't have.
- 17:10And he says, "Even what he does have is
- 17:13going to be taken from him."
- 17:14So the mindset that says, "I can do
- 17:17God's will."
- 17:18That's going to grow the kingdom. The
- 17:20mindset that acknowledges,
- 17:22"I have been given a measure of faith."
- 17:24That's going to grow the kingdom. The
- 17:26mindset that says, "I don't have what it
- 17:28takes to obey God." That's going to miss
- 17:30out on the kingdom.
- 17:32And what you have is going to be given
- 17:34to someone
- 17:35who acknowledges and celebrates and acts
- 17:38on what they've been given.
- 17:41After
- 17:42he had said these things, he was going
- 17:45on ahead.
- 17:46So, there's a crowd moving down the road
- 17:49and Jesus is out in front.
- 17:52He's going on ahead, going up to
- 17:53Jerusalem.
- 17:56When he approached Bethphage and Bethany
- 17:59near the mount that is called Olivet,
- 18:02he sent two of his disciples saying, "Go
- 18:05into the village ahead of you.
- 18:07There, as you enter, you will find a
- 18:09colt tied on which no one has ever sat.
- 18:13Untie it and bring it here.
- 18:16If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying
- 18:19it?" you shall say, "The Lord has need
- 18:22of it."
- 18:24So, those who were sent went away and
- 18:27found it just as he told them.
- 18:30As they were untying the colt, its owner
- 18:32said to him, "Why are you untying the
- 18:34colt?"
- 18:36They said, "The Lord has need of it."
- 18:40They brought it to Jesus and they threw
- 18:42their coats on the colt and put Jesus on
- 18:45it.
- 18:46As he was going, they were spreading
- 18:49their coats on the road.
- 18:51As soon as he was approaching near the
- 18:53descent of the Mount of Olives, the
- 18:54whole crowd and the disciples began to
- 18:56praise God joyfully
- 18:59with a loud voice for all the miracles
- 19:01which they had seen
- 19:03shouting, "Blessed is the king who comes
- 19:07in the name of the Lord.
- 19:10Peace in heaven and glory in the
- 19:13highest.
- 19:14Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said
- 19:17to him, "Teacher, rebuke your
- 19:20disciples."
- 19:22And Jesus answered, "I tell you, if they
- 19:25become silent,
- 19:27the stones will cry out."
- 19:31So, in this
- 19:34we see Jesus fulfilling the prophecy
- 19:38from Zechariah.
- 19:40Where the Lord says,
- 19:42"Behold your king,
- 19:45meek and lowly, and riding on the foal
- 19:49of a donkey."
- 19:51Jesus,
- 19:52if he had been a conquering hero like
- 19:55they expected, would he would have
- 19:57ridden in on a royal steed.
- 20:00But he rides meek and lowly
- 20:04on the foal of a donkey.
- 20:07And it says specifically that this
- 20:09animal had never been sat upon.
- 20:13And this is kind of a metaphor
- 20:16of what is happening.
- 20:18There are two things that are very
- 20:19significant that I see here.
- 20:23One,
- 20:25the donkey
- 20:27is symbolic
- 20:30of the young, immature,
- 20:34barely discipled
- 20:37apostles and disciples who are going to
- 20:42carry his message into the world.
- 20:46His kingship, his dominion, is going to
- 20:49ride
- 20:51on young, immature, brand new people
- 20:55who've never done it before.
- 20:58And then the second thing,
- 21:00I find it interesting that
- 21:03they put their coats, their cloaks
- 21:06on the donkey and on the road.
- 21:12In ancient times, your cloak
- 21:16was as much your identity as your name.
- 21:20>> [clears throat]
- 21:21>> It didn't say what specific name you
- 21:25bore or whose specific house
- 21:28you were from,
- 21:29but it said exactly
- 21:32what strata of society you were from.
- 21:36So, the beggars could not beg unless
- 21:39they got permission from the authorities
- 21:42to wear a beggar's cloak,
- 21:45which was their identity.
- 21:49The prophets wore a specific cloak,
- 21:52mantle, that marked them as prophets.
- 21:56Elijah wore it, one of camel's hair.
- 21:58John the Baptist wore the same one, and
- 22:01that cloak is what was put over Elisha.
- 22:04The merchants wore very specific clothes
- 22:07that said they were merchants.
- 22:10The scholars and the Pharisees wore very
- 22:12specific clothes that said that they
- 22:15were scholars
- 22:17and teachers of the law. Jesus wore a
- 22:20very specific cloak. That's why they
- 22:22divided lots and they divided his
- 22:24clothes, but they didn't They didn't
- 22:26They wanted to buy his seamless garment.
- 22:29Do you understand?
- 22:30So, when somebody takes off their cloak,
- 22:36they're still dressed,
- 22:38but they all look the same.
- 22:40And they've laid their identity
- 22:43down
- 22:44for the Lord to walk on.
- 22:47And they've laid it down for the king to
- 22:49sit upon, and they're saying,
- 22:52"I'm not a merchant, and I'm not a
- 22:54fisherman,
- 22:56and I'm not a scholar.
- 22:58I'm just a child rejoicing that the king
- 23:02can have his place where once my
- 23:05prestige and identity
- 23:07stood.
- 23:09So, I find that very interesting.
- 23:11And then
- 23:12we see that they are saying they're
- 23:15shouting they're they're praising God
- 23:18joyfully
- 23:20with loud voices for all the miracles
- 23:24which they had seen.
- 23:25This is not
- 23:27a dignified church service.
- 23:30We got people waving palm branches. We
- 23:32got people ripping off their suit coats
- 23:36and laying them down in front of a
- 23:37donkey. We got people praising God
- 23:41joyfully.
- 23:43And they're saying, "Blessed is the king
- 23:46who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace
- 23:50in heaven and glory in the highest."
- 23:53But some of the Pharisees in the crowd
- 23:55said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your
- 23:57disciples.
- 23:59Would you please shut this down?
- 24:01This is distasteful. This is getting out
- 24:04of hand."
- 24:07And Jesus answered,
- 24:09"I tell you,
- 24:10if these become quiet,
- 24:14the stones
- 24:15will cry out."
- 24:19There is such a demand
- 24:23that the children and the creation
- 24:26of God celebrate
- 24:29the return of his reign
- 24:32that if we don't celebrate it, if we
- 24:34don't love it,
- 24:36then creation, which is groaning under
- 24:38our sin, will itself begin to scream the
- 24:41praises
- 24:43that the children of God have suppressed
- 24:45in their pride.
- 24:48When he approached Jerusalem, he saw the
- 24:50city
- 24:51and [snorts] he wept over it,
- 24:54saying,
- 24:56"If you had known
- 24:58in this day
- 25:00even you
- 25:01the things which make for your peace
- 25:04but now
- 25:06they have been hidden from your eyes.
- 25:10Now, the word Jerusalem in Hebrew
- 25:14Yerushalayim
- 25:16it means
- 25:17city of peace.
- 25:19So, Jesus stands and looks at this great
- 25:22big city
- 25:24and he says
- 25:26oh city of peace and he weeps if you had
- 25:29known
- 25:31what made for your peace.
- 25:34But, they don't know. He says, but it's
- 25:36hidden from your eyes. Remember, he's
- 25:38prayed and said, I thank you Father,
- 25:41Lord of heaven and earth that you have
- 25:43hidden these things from the wise and
- 25:45the learned, the educated and you have
- 25:48revealed them to babes.
- 25:50So, Jerusalem's wisdom has hidden God's
- 25:53wisdom from their eyes.
- 25:55Jerusalem's education and knowledge and
- 25:58power has hidden God's grace from their
- 26:01eyes.
- 26:02But, now they have been hidden from
- 26:05their eyes. What What would make for
- 26:06their peace?
- 26:08What what what was it that was hidden?
- 26:11For the days will come upon you when
- 26:13your enemies will throw up a barricade
- 26:16against you and surround you and hem you
- 26:19in on every side.
- 26:22You're going to be cornered. You're
- 26:23going to be trapped.
- 26:25You're going to be destroyed by your
- 26:27enemies.
- 26:28And they will level you to the ground
- 26:30and your children with you and they will
- 26:33not leave in you one stone upon another
- 26:36because you did not recognize the time
- 26:40of your visitation.
- 26:42Literally, the hour, the moment, the
- 26:44kairos of your visitation.
- 26:47That moment of opportunity. So, that's
- 26:51what makes for their peace.
- 26:56Recognizing the visitation of God.
- 27:01In Matthew's version and in Mark's,
- 27:04we're told that he says,
- 27:06"Your house is going to be left to you
- 27:09desolate until you say, 'Blessed is he
- 27:14who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
- 27:18And that was to say, "Blessed is he who
- 27:20comes in the authority of the Lord." So
- 27:23there are two things that would have
- 27:24made for Jerusalem's peace. Recognizing
- 27:28when God is visiting, recognizing the
- 27:31presence of God, his visitation,
- 27:34and [music] blessing and welcoming the
- 27:37authority of God.
- 27:39Those are the two things that Jerusalem
- 27:41did not recognize. They recognized their
- 27:44own strength, [music] they recognized
- 27:46their own learning, they recognized the
- 27:48temple they'd built, they recognized all
- 27:50their plans, [music]
- 27:51but they did not recognize the presence
- 27:53of God, and they did not bless his
- 27:56authority.
- 27:58And so
- 27:59they're going to be leveled to the
- 28:00ground.
- 28:02Jesus entered the temple and began to
- 28:04drive out those who were selling.
- 28:07Now what is he doing? He is exercising
- 28:09an authority they [music] do not
- 28:10recognize.
- 28:12Had they said, "Blessed is he who comes
- 28:15in the name of the Lord,
- 28:17our church, our family, [music]
- 28:19our place needs to be cleansed. So
- 28:22blessed is he who comes in the name of
- 28:24the Lord. God is [music] getting out of
- 28:26our lives what is going to invite
- 28:28judgment. Blessed is he who comes in the
- 28:31>> [music]
- 28:31>> Then they would have found peace."
- 28:34But they think
- 28:36that their rebellion is going to protect
- 28:38them, and it's going to protect them
- 28:40from the grace of God, but it's not
- 28:42going to protect them from the judgment
- 28:44that is coming.
- 28:47Jesus entered the temple and began to
- 28:49drive out those who were selling, saying
- 28:51[music] to them, "It is written,
- 28:53and my house shall be a house of prayer,
- 28:57but you have made it a robbers' den."
- 29:00And he was teaching daily in the temple,
- 29:03but the chief priests and the scribes
- 29:04and the leading men among the people
- 29:07were trying to destroy him.
- 29:11You're either going to destroy [music]
- 29:13your pride
- 29:15and let the authority of God ransack
- 29:17your rebellion,
- 29:19or you're going to destroy
- 29:21>> [music]
- 29:21>> the messenger who comes in the name of
- 29:23the Lord, and in the end, you're going
- 29:25to be destroyed. Your house is going to
- 29:27be left to you desolate.
- 29:29And they could not find anything that
- 29:31they might do, for all the people were
- 29:33hanging on every word he said.
- 29:37The people were still believing
- 29:39that this was the moment. This was the
- 29:41kingdom moment.
- 29:43And they're wanting to destroy him.
- 29:47>> [music]
