- 0:00Luke chapter 13 verse [music] 1. In the
- 0:02previous chapter, Jesus has been warning
- 0:04us not to treat natural things as if
- 0:07they feed [music] our souls.
- 0:09He's been warning us that we need to
- 0:11settle with God quickly because we're
- 0:13moving toward [music] a judgment day and
- 0:15it's going to be too late. And now, in
- 0:18chapter 13 verse 1, it says,
- 0:21"Now on the same occasion so he's going
- 0:24to connect everything that comes
- 0:26>> [music]
- 0:26>> in chapter 13 to what he's just been
- 0:28ministering in chapter 12.
- 0:30>> [music]
- 0:30>> So, he's still in the same theme and we
- 0:34won't understand what's coming [music]
- 0:35if we don't keep that in mind. "Now on
- 0:38the same occasion
- 0:40there were some present who reported to
- 0:42him about [music] the Galileans whose
- 0:45blood Pilate had mixed with their
- 0:47sacrifice.
- 0:49There was a massacre
- 0:51where the Galileans [music] became
- 0:52rebellious against Rome.
- 0:54So, Pilate showed up at the sacrifice
- 0:57[music] that they were making to God
- 0:59and he killed them
- 1:01and put them on the altar and mixed
- 1:03their own blood with the sacrifice.
- 1:06So, people are reporting, "Did you hear
- 1:09what's going on?"
- 1:10And this is an example of the weather
- 1:13that he's talking about that they're not
- 1:15able to see. When he says, "You
- 1:16hypocrites, you can read the weather but
- 1:18you can't read the signs of the times."
- 1:21He's telling them terrible things are
- 1:22happening
- 1:23>> [music]
- 1:23>> and you're not getting right with God.
- 1:25You need to do it quickly.
- 1:27So then they come and tell him about the
- 1:29Galileans and Jesus said [music] to
- 1:30them,
- 1:31"Do you suppose
- 1:34that these [music] Galileans were
- 1:36greater sinners than all other Galileans
- 1:40because they [music] suffered this fate?
- 1:43Are you crazy?" He's saying.
- 1:45"Do you think that bad things only come
- 1:48to bad people?
- 1:50Do you think that they were
- 1:51exceptionally horrible and that's why
- 1:53this was able to happen?"
- 1:55No, he's saying, "Bad things come
- 1:58and they're not better than you and
- 1:59they're not worse than you. We're all in
- 2:01this together.
- 2:03I tell you no,
- 2:05but unless you repent, you will likewise
- 2:08perish."
- 2:10So, he's saying,
- 2:12"You're imagining that they suffered
- 2:14that judgment because they were really
- 2:16horrible. You're going to suffer the
- 2:17same judgment in eternity if you don't
- 2:20repent.
- 2:22Because God isn't just looking to judge
- 2:25those who are really bad.
- 2:28You were made in the image of God and
- 2:30you've been stealing his glory for
- 2:32yourself all this time. You've been
- 2:35stealing it to aggrandize yourself
- 2:37through your accumulation of possessions
- 2:39and until you stop making your life
- 2:41about yourself, until you repent and put
- 2:45him at the center,
- 2:46you have the same doom heading your way.
- 2:50I tell you no, but unless you repent,
- 2:52you will likewise perish. Or do you
- 2:54suppose that those 18 on whom the tower
- 2:58in Siloam fell and killed them were
- 3:00worse culprits than all other men who
- 3:03live in Jerusalem?
- 3:05I tell you no, but unless you repent,
- 3:08you will likewise perish."
- 3:10And he began telling this parable, "A
- 3:13man had a fig tree
- 3:15which had been planted." So, now this
- 3:16parable is going to show us the kind of
- 3:18culprits that we are.
- 3:21It's not that we're doing evil things,
- 3:23it's that we're neglecting
- 3:25the glory of God.
- 3:27We're omitting our purpose.
- 3:29We're falling short of the glory of God.
- 3:32All have sinned. How have they sinned?
- 3:35They've come short of their purpose.
- 3:38They've come short of the glory of God.
- 3:42So, here's how we come short. Here's how
- 3:44we sin. Here's how we get a tower
- 3:47dropping on us.
- 3:49Here's how we're going to get a big
- 3:50surprise in eternity.
- 3:52And he began telling this parable, "A
- 3:54man had a fig tree which had been
- 3:56planted in his vineyard
- 3:58and he came looking for fruit on it and
- 4:00did not find any.
- 4:03And he said to the vineyard keeper,
- 4:05"Behold, for 3 years I have come looking
- 4:08for fruit on this fig tree
- 4:11without finding any.
- 4:14Cut it down.
- 4:18Why does it even use up the ground?"
- 4:26And he answered and said to him, "Let it
- 4:28alone, sir,
- 4:30for this year, too,
- 4:32until I dig around it and put in
- 4:35fertilizer.
- 4:36And if it bears fruit next year, fine,
- 4:40but if not, cut it down."
- 4:43We have about 30 fruit trees planted
- 4:46around our house here
- 4:47and this is the third year.
- 4:50And there's an expectation in our hearts
- 4:52that in this third year, they will
- 4:54finally bear fruit.
- 4:57All the water,
- 4:59all the effort, all the pruning,
- 5:03all the fertilizing
- 5:05is going to be proven now in this third
- 5:07year.
- 5:08Jesus is saying, "You think you're less
- 5:12of a sinner than those on whom judgment
- 5:15came because you think sinning is doing
- 5:18evil things. But that fig tree didn't
- 5:21reach out its branch and kill somebody.
- 5:25That fig tree didn't reach out one of
- 5:27its limbs and trip the master.
- 5:30That fig tree just failed to give God
- 5:34what God deserved.
- 5:37It's fruit. It's substance.
- 5:40And that's the sin that Jesus is talking
- 5:43about here.
- 5:45Falling short of the glory of God.
- 5:49So, he says, "It's the third year. It's
- 5:52time for you to have been born fruit.
- 5:54It's time for you to be cut down. You're
- 5:56not giving God what you were planted to
- 5:59give him."
- 6:00He says, "Please give it one more year.
- 6:03Please give it one more year.
- 6:05Don't let the tower fall.
- 6:08Don't let the tragedy come.
- 6:11Give this tree just one more year of
- 6:14pruning and cultivating and water.
- 6:18And if it if it proves in the second
- 6:21chance that it can bear fruit, then
- 6:23leave it and if not, it can be cut
- 6:26down."
- 6:29And he was teaching
- 6:31in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath
- 6:34and there was a woman who for 18 years
- 6:38had had a sickness caused by a spirit
- 6:41and she was bent double and could not
- 6:44straighten up at all.
- 6:47When Jesus saw her, he called her over
- 6:50and said to her, "Woman,
- 6:52you are freed from your sickness."
- 6:58And he laid his hands on her and
- 7:00immediately she was made erect again and
- 7:04began glorifying God.
- 7:09So, this is kind of an example of
- 7:10someone who's been oppressed by the
- 7:12devil for many years, but when she comes
- 7:16into the presence of Jesus,
- 7:18she is able to stand upright, straighten
- 7:21up, and start giving glory to God with
- 7:24her life.
- 7:26But the synagogue official,
- 7:30indignant because Jesus had healed on
- 7:33the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd
- 7:36in response,
- 7:38"There are 6 days in which work should
- 7:42be done.
- 7:43So, come during them and get healed and
- 7:48not on the Sabbath day."
- 7:50>> [snorts]
- 7:52>> But the Lord answered him and said,
- 7:55"You hypocrite.
- 7:59Does not each of you on the Sabbath
- 8:03untie his ox or his donkey from the
- 8:07stall and lead him away to water him?
- 8:13And this woman, a daughter of Abraham,
- 8:18as she is, whom Satan has bound for 18
- 8:23long years, should she not have been
- 8:26released from this bond on the Sabbath
- 8:29day?"
- 8:31He's saying, "You fraud.
- 8:34You care about the animals that make you
- 8:38money.
- 8:40And so, they're tied up on the Sabbath
- 8:43and in the morning, you let them loose
- 8:46so that they can eat because they've
- 8:48been tied up for a few hours during the
- 8:51night.
- 8:52But this woman has been tied up by the
- 8:55devil for 18 years and you have so
- 8:58little love for her and for God
- 9:02that you don't care to untie her. You
- 9:05just care to untie the things that are
- 9:07going to help you make money on the
- 9:08morning after the Sabbath. That's why
- 9:11they're hypocrites because they show
- 9:13care for the things that give them
- 9:16riches and money, but they don't show
- 9:18care for the needs,
- 9:22the suffering
- 9:23of the children of Abraham. She is a
- 9:26daughter of Abraham. She's no ox. She's
- 9:29no donkey.
- 9:30She's a daughter of Abraham and I just
- 9:32came to untie her."
- 9:37As he said this, all his opponents were
- 9:40being humiliated.
- 9:44And the entire crowd was rejoicing over
- 9:48all the glorious things being done by
- 9:50him.
- 9:52>> [laughter]
- 9:52>> Wow.
- 9:54Well, there's why they wanted to kill
- 9:56him. They're being humiliated when their
- 9:59righteous principles don't hold up when
- 10:02it comes to their business.
- 10:04And they are shown to have more love for
- 10:07oxen and donkeys than for the poor
- 10:09woman.
- 10:10But the people were rejoicing.
- 10:13So he was saying,
- 10:15"What
- 10:17is the kingdom of God like?
- 10:19And to what shall I compare it?"
- 10:22Now if the kingdom of God were simple to
- 10:24explain, then Jesus wouldn't spend most
- 10:26of his parables trying to explain it.
- 10:29He'd just say, "Oh, it's like a
- 10:31millennial kingdom that's going to
- 10:32happen right after the rapture.
- 10:35And uh it's going to be a political
- 10:37system just like all the rest, only I'm
- 10:39going to be more powerful." Oh, great.
- 10:41No parables needed to describe that.
- 10:44But if the kingdom of God is something
- 10:45completely different,
- 10:48God reigning through the spirit,
- 10:50dominion through grace,
- 10:52power in weakness, glory in humility,
- 10:55then he's got to have a lot of parables
- 10:57to explain it.
- 10:59"What is the kingdom of God like?
- 11:03And to what shall I compare it?
- 11:05It is like a mustard seed,
- 11:08which a man took and threw into his own
- 11:10garden,
- 11:11and it grew and became a tree,
- 11:14and the birds of the air nested in its
- 11:17branches."
- 11:18The kingdom of God is like something
- 11:20tiny
- 11:21that gets proper cultivation. This is in
- 11:24line with what he was saying about the
- 11:27fig tree.
- 11:28The kingdom of God is a tiny seed of
- 11:31truth that you cultivate, water,
- 11:35and care for until it becomes something
- 11:39that
- 11:40the birds of the air can come and nest
- 11:42in its branches. And again he said, "To
- 11:45what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
- 11:47It is like leaven, which a woman took
- 11:50and hid in three pecks of flour until it
- 11:53was all leavened."
- 11:55So perhaps what he's saying is that
- 11:58the kingdom of God is like an influence
- 12:02that starts to permeate every area of
- 12:04life.
- 12:05Starts to change the way we work and the
- 12:08way we play and the way we think.
- 12:11It's a new priority
- 12:13that substantively changes
- 12:16how our life works.
- 12:19This is like the leaven of new wine that
- 12:22can burst the old wine skins. Well, now
- 12:26it's the leaven
- 12:28of a new perspective
- 12:30that utterly changes and transforms the
- 12:33old lumps of what we were until they
- 12:36become something different altogether.
- 12:39And as he was passing through from one
- 12:41city and village to another, teaching
- 12:44and proceeding on his way to Jerusalem,
- 12:48someone said to him, "Lord, are there
- 12:51just a few who are being saved?"
- 12:56And he said to them, "Strive to enter
- 13:00through the narrow door,
- 13:02for many, I tell you, will seek to enter
- 13:07and will not be able.
- 13:11Once the head of the house gets up and
- 13:13shuts the door,
- 13:15and you begin to stand outside and knock
- 13:17on the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.'
- 13:22Then he will answer and say to you, 'I
- 13:25do not know where you are from.' Then he
- 13:28will answer and say to you, 'I do not
- 13:31know where you are from.'
- 13:34Now listen to this.
- 13:36The parable here is
- 13:38are many going to be saved or are few
- 13:41going to be saved? And he's basically
- 13:43telling them,
- 13:45"Many are going to try and only few are
- 13:48going to be saved."
- 13:50But this is important. I want you to
- 13:52understand this parable.
- 13:55He's using the metaphor
- 13:58of a household
- 14:00and a master
- 14:03and the servants of the house. This is
- 14:05the parable he's been using in the
- 14:07previous chapter.
- 14:10So here we have
- 14:11a household. Picture a great manor house
- 14:15in England, okay?
- 14:17And there's a master of this house.
- 14:21And included in the household are the
- 14:23children, the sons, the daughters, and
- 14:26the servants.
- 14:28And the servants, for whatever reason,
- 14:31are away.
- 14:33Okay? When those servants come and they
- 14:35knock on the door,
- 14:37that means it's late.
- 14:40That means the doors are already shut
- 14:41for safety. And they're saying, "Let me
- 14:44in."
- 14:46If the master knows who those servants
- 14:49are and that they belong in his
- 14:51household, he opens to them.
- 14:54And they come in
- 14:56and find the safety.
- 14:58But what he's saying is that people are
- 15:01going to come and knock on a door of a
- 15:03house where they never belonged.
- 15:06They never learned to serve in that
- 15:08house. They never became part. They
- 15:10never became a son, a daughter, a
- 15:12servant,
- 15:14which describes all of us.
- 15:17All of us are called to be sons and
- 15:18daughters in the sense
- 15:23slaves
- 15:24sense that our flesh is in total
- 15:26obedience and subjugation to his will.
- 15:31Do you understand?
- 15:32So the question is not
- 15:35whether you knock on the right door. The
- 15:37question is, did you belong there? Did
- 15:39you have history there? Were you
- 15:41employed there? Were you begotten there?
- 15:45Were you part of the household?
- 15:48Picture our house in England. If some
- 15:51servant comes and knocks on the door in
- 15:52the middle of the night,
- 15:54and he's been employed there for
- 15:5615 years,
- 15:58are they going to open the door? Yes,
- 16:00they know him.
- 16:01They know where he comes from. He comes
- 16:03from here, so he comes back in here,
- 16:06right? But what if someone knocks on the
- 16:08door in the middle of the night and they
- 16:09don't know where he's from? Are they
- 16:11going to open to him? No. They're going
- 16:13to say, "You don't belong here.
- 16:16You don't aren't employed here. You've
- 16:19been employed somewhere else.
- 16:22You belong in another system. What are
- 16:25you doing knocking at the last minute on
- 16:27this door?
- 16:28It's already shut."
- 16:30So what he's telling them is,
- 16:32"Yes, few are going to be saved, but if
- 16:34you wait until the door is shut before
- 16:36you become a member of the house, you're
- 16:38not going to be saved." When God says,
- 16:40"I don't know where you're from," he's
- 16:43saying, "You aren't part of my
- 16:44household." Once the head of the house
- 16:47gets up and shuts the door and you begin
- 16:49to stand outside and knock on the door,
- 16:52saying, "Lord, open to us." This isn't
- 16:54the time for employment.
- 16:56Judgment has already come. You should
- 16:58have come and and sought employment a
- 17:00long time ago.
- 17:01Then he will answer and say to you, "I
- 17:03do not know you or where you are from."
- 17:07Then you will begin to say, "We ate and
- 17:09drank in your presence,
- 17:11and you taught in our streets."
- 17:13So they're going to say, "We were around
- 17:15you.
- 17:17We saw you. We were in the same
- 17:19company."
- 17:20That's not what he's looking for. And he
- 17:22will say, "I tell you, I do not know you
- 17:27where you are from."
- 17:29[clears throat]
- 17:30I don't know what house you belong to.
- 17:32You don't belong in mine.
- 17:35"Depart from me,
- 17:37all you evildoers."
- 17:44In that place,
- 17:46there will be weeping
- 17:48and gnashing of teeth,
- 17:51when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob
- 17:55and all the prophets in the kingdom of
- 17:57God, but you yourselves are thrown out.
- 18:03And they will come
- 18:04that we are children of God. in the
- 18:06from But all of us are called to be
- 18:07east and west and from north and south
- 18:09and will recline at the table in the
- 18:12kingdom of And behold, some last who
- 18:15will be first and some are first who
- 18:17will be last.
- 18:19He says, "Depart from me. I don't know
- 18:22where you're from."
- 18:25That's even what they would have said in
- 18:28the middle of the night. They would have
- 18:30said, "I
- 18:32am Sean of the household of
- 18:36Baruch."
- 18:38Or who whatever household you belong to.
- 18:41If you were a servant or a son, you
- 18:43would say you would introduce yourself
- 18:46through a closed door by declaring what
- 18:49household you were belonging at.
- 18:52So when he says, "I do not know where
- 18:53you're from," he's saying, "You're not
- 18:56part of my family.
- 18:58You waited until the last minute to
- 19:01build the relationship.
- 19:03You're not part of the family."
- 19:07But he says people are going to come
- 19:09from east and west. He's saying,
- 19:11"There're going to be a lot of people
- 19:13who are members of that household that
- 19:16you thought were inferior.
- 19:19But the sons of the kingdom are going to
- 19:20be cast out. And in that place there
- 19:22will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
- 19:26Gnashing of teeth is like regret.
- 19:31No. No.
- 19:35It's regret at an opportunity that
- 19:38should have been seized earlier.
- 19:41Not an opportunity to be perfect.
- 19:44Not an opportunity to have better works.
- 19:47An opportunity to belong in the house of
- 19:51God, in the family of Jesus.
- 19:55Just at that time, some Pharisees
- 19:57approached saying to him, "Go away,
- 20:00leave here, for Herod wants to kill
- 20:02you."
- 20:03This seems
- 20:04like a kind gesture on the part of the
- 20:06Pharisees. I think it was.
- 20:09I think they would have seen Herod as an
- 20:11enemy.
- 20:12And he they're saying, "You better hide
- 20:13yourself. Get out of here. Herod's about
- 20:16to kill you."
- 20:18They probably interrupted the sermon.
- 20:22And Jesus said to them,
- 20:24"Go and tell that fox,
- 20:26behold,
- 20:28I cast out demons and perform cures
- 20:31today and tomorrow,
- 20:33and the third day I reach my goal.
- 20:36Nevertheless, I must journey on today
- 20:39and tomorrow and the next day,
- 20:41for it cannot be that a prophet would
- 20:43perish outside Jerusalem."
- 20:45So,
- 20:47Jesus is not concerned about Herod.
- 20:50He is not scared. He says, "Go tell that
- 20:53fox,
- 20:55behold, I have a schedule.
- 20:59And I'm not going to rush my ministry
- 21:02timeline for your sake. I'm not going to
- 21:05run away from you, and I'm not going to
- 21:06run toward you.
- 21:07I'm casting out demons today, performing
- 21:10cures today, and I've got the same plans
- 21:12for tomorrow.
- 21:13And on the third day, I will reach my
- 21:15goal."
- 21:17And the goal is likely Jerusalem.
- 21:20Basically, "I'll meet you when I get
- 21:22there, but I'm not coming there because
- 21:23of you. I'm coming there because of what
- 21:25God wants to do."
- 21:28"Nevertheless, I must journey on today
- 21:30and tomorrow and the next day, for it
- 21:31cannot be that a prophet would perish
- 21:33outside of Jerusalem." So, he's like,
- 21:35"It does happen to be that I am going to
- 21:37be in Jerusalem, and that's not because
- 21:39you ordered it. That's not because
- 21:41you're threatening me.
- 21:43I'm not going to run away from you. It's
- 21:44because I'm in the will of God. The fact
- 21:46that it coincides with a meeting with
- 21:49you,
- 21:51well, a prophet can't die outside of
- 21:52Jerusalem."
- 21:54He's exhibiting, "I am not one bit
- 21:56afraid of you.
- 21:58You're a phony,
- 22:00and I am
- 22:01I'm going to encounter you only because
- 22:03I'm in the will of God. You don't scare
- 22:05me, you don't intimidate me.
- 22:07You're just a fox."
- 22:09And then,
- 22:11Jesus begins his lamentation over the
- 22:14city where he's going to die.
- 22:17"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
- 22:21the city that kills the prophets
- 22:24and stones those sent to her.
- 22:26How often I wanted to gather your
- 22:30children together,
- 22:32just as a hen gathers her brood under
- 22:35her wings,
- 22:37and you would not have it.
- 22:40Behold, your house is left to you
- 22:43desolate.
- 22:44And I say to you,
- 22:46you will not see me
- 22:48until the time comes when you say,
- 22:51'Blessed is he who comes in the name of
- 22:55the Lord.'"
- 22:58So, in this lamentation,
- 23:00Jesus [music] is weeping for the city.
- 23:03And if we put it together with the other
- 23:05gospel tellings,
- 23:07he adds, [music]
- 23:08"You don't know what makes for your
- 23:10peace.
- 23:12You think peace comes
- 23:14through big buildings. You think peace
- 23:17comes through compromise. You think
- 23:19peace comes through tradition,
- 23:22but peace comes through accepting the
- 23:26authority [music] of God,
- 23:28saying in your heart, 'Blessed is he who
- 23:31comes in the name and authority [music]
- 23:34of God.' That's what makes for
- 23:37Jerusalem's peace.
- 23:39But because she doesn't know that,
- 23:41her house is going to be left to her
- 23:43desolate. That's the temple, that's her
- 23:44house. Not one [music] stone is going to
- 23:46be left upon another.
- 23:48The walls are going to be torn down. The
- 23:51Romans are going to destroy everything.
- 23:53But if she had have accepted
- 23:56the anointed one, if she had accepted
- 23:58the one who comes in the name of the
- 24:00Lord, peace would have come.
- 24:03But she trusted in her military, she
- 24:06trusted in her compromises, she trusted
- 24:08in her traditions, she trusted in her
- 24:11teachers of the law. She trusted in
- 24:13everything, but she didn't trust in the
- 24:16one
- 24:17who could have brought peace.
- 24:19Only the authority of God.
- 24:22But here is God's sovereignty
- 24:24interacting with our free choice.
- 24:28He says, God says, "I wanted to gather
- 24:31your children together.
- 24:33I wanted to love you. I wanted to
- 24:35protect you. I wanted to save you like a
- 24:38hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
- 24:41but
- 24:43you would not have it. You were not
- 24:46willing."
- 24:48And here's God's sovereignty reaching
- 24:51our will and not coercing us to be
- 24:54saved.
- 24:55He wanted it, but we were not willing.
- 24:58So,
- 24:59we're going to be
- 25:00destroyed, we're going to be left
- 25:01desolate until we say, "Blessed is he
- 25:05that comes in the name of the Lord."
- 25:09>> [music]
