- 0:00Luke chapter 12 verse 1.
- 0:03Under these circumstances, [music]
- 0:05after so many thousands of people had
- 0:08gathered together that they were
- 0:10stepping on one another, he began saying
- 0:13to his disciples [music] first of all,
- 0:15"Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees,
- 0:19which is hypocrisy.
- 0:22But there is nothing covered up that
- 0:25will not be revealed,
- 0:27and hidden that will not be made known.
- 0:30Accordingly, whatever you [music] have
- 0:33said in the dark will be heard in the
- 0:35light,
- 0:36and what you have whispered in the inner
- 0:38rooms will [music] be proclaimed upon
- 0:40the housetops.
- 0:42I say to you, my friends,
- 0:45do not be afraid of those who kill the
- 0:47body, and after that have no more they
- 0:50can do.
- 0:52But I will warn you whom to fear. Fear
- 0:55the one who,
- 0:57after he has killed, has authority to
- 0:59cast you into hell.
- 1:01Yes, I tell you, fear him.
- 1:04Are not five sparrows sold for two
- 1:07cents?
- 1:08Yet not one [music] of them is forgotten
- 1:10before God.
- 1:11Indeed, the very hairs of your head are
- 1:14all numbered.
- 1:16Do not fear, you are more valuable than
- 1:18many sparrows.
- 1:20And I say to you, everyone who confesses
- 1:23me before men, the Son of Man will
- 1:26confess him before the angels of God.
- 1:29But whoever denies me before men will be
- 1:33denied before the angels of God.
- 1:36And everyone who speaks a word against
- 1:38the Son of Man,
- 1:39>> [music]
- 1:39>> it will be forgiven him.
- 1:41But he who blasphemes against the Holy
- 1:44Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.
- 1:47When they bring you before the
- 1:49synagogues
- 1:50and the rulers [music] and the
- 1:52authorities, do not worry about how or
- 1:55what you are to speak in your defense or
- 1:58what you are to say.
- 2:00For the Holy Spirit will teach you in
- 2:03that very hour what you ought to say.
- 2:07So in this section, Jesus is telling
- 2:11them
- 2:12that they should watch out for the
- 2:14leaven of the Pharisees.
- 2:17So he doesn't say watch out because the
- 2:19Pharisees are hypocritical.
- 2:21He says their hypocrisy is like leaven.
- 2:25It's like yeast.
- 2:27It changes gradually the substance of a
- 2:30material.
- 2:32If you [music] add leaven to a lump of
- 2:34dough,
- 2:35does that dough stay the same?
- 2:38No, it it works its influence through
- 2:41that entire lump. It inflates it. It
- 2:44expands it. It substantively changes the
- 2:47structure of that dough.
- 2:50And the yeast is hypocrisy.
- 2:53It's saying one thing and doing another.
- 2:56It's saying something publicly that is
- 2:58different than what you say privately.
- 3:01So he says,
- 3:03"Whatever you say in the dark,
- 3:05it will be heard in the light."
- 3:08And you say, "Well,
- 3:10is he talking about us saying bad
- 3:12things?
- 3:13And and are unkind words coming to
- 3:16light?" Yes, but that's not all he's
- 3:19talking about. He's also talking about
- 3:23the good.
- 3:24The fact that
- 3:27they are trying to suppress Jesus'
- 3:29message and they're trying to keep it
- 3:31quiet in the houses and it's going to be
- 3:34proclaimed upon the rooftops.
- 3:37But he goes on and he says that
- 3:40he indicates that the motivation for
- 3:43speaking quietly about him
- 3:46or the motivation for speaking
- 3:49differently in the open than you do in
- 3:51secret is fear.
- 3:53It's self-protection. But he says, "I
- 3:56will warn you
- 3:58who you should fear." He says, "My
- 4:00friends,
- 4:01do not be afraid of those who kill the
- 4:04body and after that can do no more."
- 4:08Now, most people would hear that
- 4:09statement and find it
- 4:11most remarkable. They'd be incredulous
- 4:14at the statement.
- 4:16Because what more can you do after
- 4:18you've killed the body?
- 4:20Well, Jesus' equation is not temporal.
- 4:22It's not earthbound.
- 4:25It's eternal.
- 4:27And he's saying, "Don't think only in
- 4:30terms of what happens here on earth.
- 4:32Think in terms of what is going to
- 4:35happen in eternity."
- 4:37And he he does not give us this notion
- 4:39that we should fear nothing.
- 4:43He gives us this notion that we should
- 4:44fear nothing except God.
- 4:47But that we should fear God. Yes, I tell
- 4:50you, "Fear him," he says.
- 4:52Anyone who teaches you that you
- 4:54shouldn't fear God is placing you back
- 4:57under the fear of man. Because the only
- 4:59way to escape the fear of man is to stop
- 5:03thinking only in the temporal construct
- 5:06of what can be done to harm you in this
- 5:08life.
- 5:09But if you think in the eternal
- 5:11worldview, the eternal framework
- 5:14of what's going to happen after this
- 5:16life, that's how you escape the clutches
- 5:19of fear in this present time.
- 5:22And he tells us
- 5:23some of the ways that we need to take
- 5:26our secret words and make them
- 5:30public words.
- 5:31"I say, 'Everyone who confesses me
- 5:35before men,
- 5:36the Son of Man will confess him before
- 5:39the angels of God.'"
- 5:40Jesus wants us to have the courage
- 5:45to own our belonging to him, what he
- 5:49means to us before other people.
- 5:52It's easy to be a a Christian secretly.
- 5:56It's easy to have notions in your heart
- 5:59and that you whisper in your house.
- 6:02But when somebody asks you, do you also
- 6:04belong to them? Are you with him as
- 6:07well?
- 6:09Are you embarrassed? Are you ashamed?
- 6:11Well, that's because you're full of
- 6:12fear. And that fear proves that you're
- 6:15still living in the temporal construct
- 6:18of just this this world, of just this
- 6:21life, instead of the eternal construct
- 6:24of God's bigger purpose and our bigger
- 6:26destiny.
- 6:28Someone in the crowd said to him,
- 6:29"Teacher, tell my brother to divide the
- 6:32family inheritance with me."
- 6:35Well, now that is a change of subjects.
- 6:39Use your authority to make my brother do
- 6:43what I want him to do. To give me more
- 6:45of my possessions.
- 6:49But he, Jesus, said to him, "Man, who
- 6:52appointed me
- 6:54a judge or arbitrator over you?"
- 7:00This word appointed is the same word
- 7:03that Paul uses for ordain when he says
- 7:06to Timothy, "Ordain elders."
- 7:08And it means to be set in place, to be
- 7:10given authority through an office given
- 7:14from above.
- 7:16And Jesus is expressing profound
- 7:19humility. He's saying, "God has not set
- 7:23me in the place
- 7:25or given me authority to control the
- 7:27details of your life.
- 7:29That's not what I'm here for.
- 7:31I'm here to speak the truth and you are
- 7:34going to take responsibility for how you
- 7:36obey it."
- 7:39"Man, who appointed me, who ordained me
- 7:43a judge or arbitrator over you?
- 7:47Then he said to them, "Beware and be on
- 7:49your guard against every form of greed."
- 7:52So now he says, "I'm not going to get
- 7:54into the details
- 7:56of how you settle this matter with your
- 7:58brother. That's not my place. That's not
- 8:00what God has ordained me to do.
- 8:03But I am going to speak the word, and if
- 8:04you have ears to hear, you can
- 8:07obey that word
- 8:09knowing that you're accountable before
- 8:10God."
- 8:12Jesus did not exert
- 8:14every authority that he had the
- 8:16opportunity to exert. He stayed in the
- 8:18limits of the ministry God had given
- 8:21him. And if he had limits, how much more
- 8:24do we have limits and are obliged to
- 8:26stay constrained only to what God
- 8:30has told us to do.
- 8:31So he does not get into the details of
- 8:34whether
- 8:35John gets the cowboy boots and Jeff gets
- 8:38the sneakers in the inheritance.
- 8:40He has He is not going to weigh into
- 8:42those particulars because that's not
- 8:44what he's called to. But he is going to
- 8:46speak the truth that he knows if they
- 8:49have an ear to hear, it will settle the
- 8:52matter.
- 8:53Because that's what he's been ordained
- 8:54to do. So I'm not getting into your
- 8:56details, but here's the truth. Then he
- 8:59said to them, "Beware and be on your
- 9:02guard against every form of greed.
- 9:06For not even when one has an abundance,
- 9:10does life consist of his possessions."
- 9:17Why should we avoid greed?
- 9:19Because it doesn't bring life.
- 9:21Greed
- 9:23is giving to things the kind of
- 9:27excitement and devotion
- 9:30that should only follow
- 9:32that which brings life.
- 9:34Relationships bring life.
- 9:37Love brings life.
- 9:39Joy brings life.
- 9:42Truth brings life.
- 9:45But tables and chairs and houses and
- 9:48cars and horses and
- 9:51lands, they don't bring life.
- 9:55So greed amounts to desiring things
- 10:01as if they brought life.
- 10:04Treating things as if they were eternal.
- 10:08And therefore we're taking away from
- 10:11that which does bring life.
- 10:13And we're setting our affections and our
- 10:16ambitions on that which does not bring
- 10:18life. Because it's easier to get things
- 10:20than people.
- 10:22It's easier to get possessions than
- 10:24truth or love or joy or meaning.
- 10:28But those things bring life.
- 10:30And he told them a parable saying,
- 10:32"The land of a rich man
- 10:35was very productive.
- 10:37And he began reasoning to himself
- 10:40saying,
- 10:41'What shall I do, since I have no place
- 10:44to store my crops?'
- 10:47Then he said,
- 10:48'This is what I will do.
- 10:50I will tear down my barns and build
- 10:53larger ones.
- 10:54And there I will store all my grain and
- 10:57my goods.
- 10:59And I will say to my soul,
- 11:03"Soul,
- 11:04you have many goods laid up for many
- 11:08years to come.
- 11:10Take your ease.
- 11:12Eat, drink, and be merry."
- 11:17But God said to him,
- 11:19"You fool!
- 11:21This very night your soul is required of
- 11:25you.
- 11:26And now who will own what you have
- 11:29prepared?"
- 11:32So the man who stores up treasure for
- 11:35himself is not rich
- 11:38toward God.
- 11:41So, he's saying, you need to spend your
- 11:43energy,
- 11:44your time,
- 11:46your resources
- 11:48on building riches toward God.
- 11:52Because in the end, someone else is
- 11:54going to take over all your possessions.
- 11:57You're going to spend your life building
- 11:59all your wealth, and someone else is
- 12:01going to take it from you.
- 12:03Because you can't carry your crops, your
- 12:05barns, your things into eternity.
- 12:09But what you are going to carry into
- 12:11eternity is your eternal soul.
- 12:15And he's telling him,
- 12:20in this story, he's saying that the rich
- 12:22man was assuming, was acting as if his
- 12:26possessions could nourish and strengthen
- 12:29and prepare and secure his soul. The
- 12:33rich man said, "Soul,
- 12:36you have many goods laid up for many
- 12:38years to come."
- 12:41Big deal.
- 12:43That's not going to help your soul.
- 12:47But what if his life had been full of
- 12:49kindness toward others?
- 12:52What if his life had been full of truth?
- 12:55What if his life had been full of love?
- 12:57>> [snorts]
- 12:58>> Well, heaven and earth shall pass away,
- 13:00but the word of the Lord endures
- 13:01forever. Love never fails.
- 13:05Now abide faith, hope, and love. These
- 13:08remain.
- 13:09And the greatest of these is love.
- 13:11So, there are things that
- 13:13nourish and prepare our soul for its
- 13:16eternal destination, and there are
- 13:19things that do not.
- 13:21And when we start to treat the
- 13:24possessions that do not feed the soul as
- 13:27if they were the treasures that do feed
- 13:30the soul.
- 13:31That is when we are being caught.
- 13:34We are being snared. We are fools.
- 13:38We are the godless fool in this story.
- 13:42And he said to his disciples, "For this
- 13:44reason I say to you, do not worry about
- 13:49your life.
- 13:52Because the things of this world do not
- 13:55make you rich toward God. For this
- 13:57reason I say to you, do not worry about
- 14:01your life.
- 14:04Literally, stop worrying.
- 14:07Stop fretting.
- 14:10As to what you will eat,
- 14:13nor for your body as to what you will
- 14:15put on.
- 14:17For life is more than food,
- 14:21and the body more than clothing.
- 14:25Consider the ravens.
- 14:28For they neither sow nor reap. They have
- 14:31no storeroom nor barn.
- 14:33Yet God feeds them.
- 14:35And how much more valuable you are than
- 14:38the birds?
- 14:41And which of you by worrying can add a
- 14:44single hour to his lifespan?
- 14:48If then you cannot do even a very little
- 14:51thing, why do you worry about other
- 14:53matters?
- 14:54Consider the lilies, how they grow. They
- 14:58neither toil nor spin, but I tell you,
- 15:00not even Solomon in all his glory
- 15:03clothed himself like one of these.
- 15:06But if God so clothes the grass in the
- 15:09field, which is alive today and tomorrow
- 15:13is thrown into the furnace,
- 15:15how much more will he clothe you,
- 15:19you men of little faith?
- 15:22And do not seek what you will eat and
- 15:25what you will drink and do not keep
- 15:27worrying.
- 15:29For all these things the nations of the
- 15:31world eagerly seek,
- 15:34but your father knows that you need
- 15:36these things.
- 15:38But seek his kingdom
- 15:40and these things will be added to you.
- 15:43Do not be afraid, little flock,
- 15:46for your father has chosen gladly to
- 15:49give you the kingdom.
- 15:53Sell your possessions and give to
- 15:55charity.
- 15:57Make yourselves money belts which do not
- 15:59wear out, an unfailing treasure in
- 16:02heaven where no thief comes near nor
- 16:06moth destroys and where your treasure
- 16:08is, there your heart will be also.
- 16:13So he's telling them
- 16:15life isn't in the things that occupy
- 16:19your mind and affections. You're wasting
- 16:23your emotional energy. You're worrying.
- 16:27But there's no life there.
- 16:30Life is more than the things you worry
- 16:31about.
- 16:34You don't trust God.
- 16:37And he's saying
- 16:38what you need to worry about and you
- 16:40don't need to have worry, but you need
- 16:41to seek.
- 16:43You need to pursue something that does
- 16:46have life and that is God's kingdom.
- 16:49God desires to bring his dominion of
- 16:53love, his king dominion of love, into
- 16:56this world through you.
- 16:59He wants to express his dominion in the
- 17:02way you steward
- 17:03the practical things in your life, in
- 17:06the way you love the people in your
- 17:08life,
- 17:09in the way you share his truth to the
- 17:11world in your life.
- 17:15He wants you to bring his kingdom in
- 17:18your life.
- 17:20And if you'd stop worrying about what is
- 17:22not eternal and start investing in what
- 17:25is eternal, his kingdom,
- 17:28then God will give you all these things
- 17:30you worry about because he knows you
- 17:33need them.
- 17:34But they don't come as the prime
- 17:37product, they come as the byproduct.
- 17:41Nobody shakes cream to get buttermilk.
- 17:45They shake cream to get butter
- 17:47and buttermilk ensues as the byproduct
- 17:50of what they're after.
- 17:52And that's how possessions and blessings
- 17:54and things are. God knows you need them.
- 17:57He knows you need enough money to live.
- 17:59He knows you need good food.
- 18:01He knows you need clothing and houses
- 18:03and but if you'll
- 18:05if you'll shake, if you'll pursue
- 18:09the things that come first,
- 18:12his kingdom, his righteousness, his
- 18:14peace, his joy in the Holy Spirit.
- 18:18If you'll pursue being filled with his
- 18:21spirit, binding the strongman of sin and
- 18:25plundering the house and giving it over
- 18:27to the spirit of God,
- 18:30then in that grace, in that
- 18:33fruitfulness, all the other things will
- 18:36start showing up. You'll be like, "Oh,
- 18:38wow, look. He's giving me everything I
- 18:40once worried about."
- 18:43But you don't chase those things because
- 18:45the kingdom will never be the byproduct
- 18:48of your worry over things of the flesh.
- 18:53He tells them, "Do not worry.
- 18:56Do not be afraid, little flock.
- 18:59He feels sorry for them.
- 19:02They're like a bunch of sheep. He says,
- 19:04"Don't be like that, little flock.
- 19:06For your father has chosen gladly to
- 19:10give you the kingdom.
- 19:12While you're seeking it, he's glad to
- 19:15give it to you.
- 19:16God wants to give you his spirit. God
- 19:19wants to give you his purpose. God wants
- 19:21to give you the dominion of his grace.
- 19:26Gladly to give you the kingdom.
- 19:29He's not holding it back.
- 19:30But you're only going to find it when
- 19:32you seek it first. You can't be like the
- 19:35double-minded man who receives nothing
- 19:37from the Lord. You can't have two
- 19:39priorities. You can't be seeking the
- 19:41kingdom, you know, in these little gaps
- 19:44that you create
- 19:46in your real pursuit of seeking the
- 19:48things that worry your flesh.
- 19:51He says, "Sell your possessions. Don't
- 19:53hold on to things.
- 19:55Be generous. Give to people who have
- 19:57need.
- 19:58Loosen your grip on the things that are
- 20:01temporal,
- 20:02that are just in this earth,
- 20:05and get your your grip around those
- 20:07things that are eternal.
- 20:10Make yourselves money belts which do not
- 20:12wear out.
- 20:18Find the pearls of great price.
- 20:21Find the treasure buried in the field.
- 20:24The currency of love and truth.
- 20:27An unfailing treasure in heaven
- 20:30where no thief comes in nor moth
- 20:32destroys. Then he says, "Where your
- 20:35treasure is,
- 20:37there your heart will be also.
- 20:39Whatever you decide is valuable,
- 20:42whatever you make a decision, this is
- 20:45the most valuable thing in my life.
- 20:49Whatever you say, that is my treasure.
- 20:53That's where your heart is going to be.
- 20:55That's where your
- 20:56excitement is going to be. That's where
- 20:58your love is going to be. That's where
- 20:59your devotion is going to be. That's
- 21:01where your worry is going to be.
- 21:06So you can you can lie to yourself
- 21:08>> [snorts]
- 21:08>> and you can say, "My treasure is Jesus
- 21:11and seeing his kingdom in my life."
- 21:14But, if your heart, your worries, your
- 21:16excitement, your devotion, your emotion,
- 21:20if your heart
- 21:21is on all the things of this world,
- 21:23you're just lying to yourself.
- 21:25And then there's the other way in which
- 21:27he's saying this.
- 21:29He's saying that your soul, your eternal
- 21:32heart, is going to live
- 21:34in a place where you put your treasure.
- 21:37And if you put it in your barns,
- 21:39it's going to burn down with those
- 21:40barns. But, if you put it in heaven,
- 21:43you're going to be there where your
- 21:45treasure was. Be dressed in readiness
- 21:48and keep your lamps lit.
- 21:51Be like men who are waiting for their
- 21:53master
- 21:54when he returns from the wedding feast,
- 21:57so that they may immediately open the
- 21:59door to him
- 22:00when he comes and knocks.
- 22:04Blessed are those slaves whom the master
- 22:06will find on the alert when he comes.
- 22:10Truly, I say to you that he will gird
- 22:12himself to serve and have them recline
- 22:15at the table and will come up and wait
- 22:17on them.
- 22:18>> [clears throat]
- 22:20>> Whether he comes in the second watch or
- 22:22even in the third and finds them so,
- 22:26blessed are those slaves.
- 22:28But, be sure of this, if the head of the
- 22:30house had known at what hour the thief
- 22:33was coming, he would not have allowed
- 22:35his house to be broken into.
- 22:37You, too, be ready, for the Son of Man
- 22:40is coming at an hour that you do not
- 22:42expect.
- 22:45So, he's saying this speaks of Jesus'
- 22:47return, but it also speaks of
- 22:50God coming in each person's life.
- 22:53The time of our personal death.
- 22:56Like the man with his barns, okay? And
- 22:59he says, "I Here's how I want you to
- 23:00live your life.
- 23:02I want you to be like the servants
- 23:05in a big household
- 23:07where the master went away to a party,
- 23:11to a wedding feast.
- 23:13But when that master comes back to the
- 23:15house,
- 23:17he does not want to find all the
- 23:19servants asleep.
- 23:21Maybe he has horses that need to be
- 23:22stabled.
- 23:24Maybe he has
- 23:25Maybe the door needs to be opened for
- 23:27him when he arrives. Maybe the gate
- 23:30outside needs to be locked.
- 23:32But he says, "You need to be
- 23:34anticipating the master's coming in your
- 23:36life."
- 23:38And when he shows up, if you're ready,
- 23:41you're showing where your heart was.
- 23:43You're showing where your treasure was.
- 23:45You're sure showing that you are a
- 23:47servant to the kingdom.
- 23:50And this can even be a moment of
- 23:51blessing. This could be a visitation of
- 23:54God's spirit. But you're ready. And it
- 23:56says, "You open the door when he walks
- 23:59up."
- 24:00Picture the master walking toward the
- 24:02door of his great house in the middle of
- 24:04the night, and he gets right to it, and
- 24:06like an automatic door,
- 24:09it opens. That's how ready you are to
- 24:12open your heart, to open your life,
- 24:14to prepare the way of the Lord, to step
- 24:16into the moment, or to step into
- 24:19eternity itself.
- 24:22And he says here that when the master
- 24:24finds people in that state of readiness,
- 24:27you know what he's going to do?
- 24:29The master's going to gird himself. He's
- 24:31going to put a towel on, and he's going
- 24:33to become your servant.
- 24:35He's going to have you sit down
- 24:37there in the middle of the night, and
- 24:39he's going to serve you. God's going to
- 24:41give you what you need. Your father
- 24:43knows everything you need, and he wants
- 24:45to help you.
- 24:47But you need to be fixed on him,
- 24:50on his arrival, on his mission, on his
- 24:53house, and on your service to it, not on
- 24:56yourself.
- 24:58Peter said, "Lord, are you addressing
- 25:00this parable to us or to everyone else
- 25:03as well?"
- 25:05Like, are we the guys who are supposed
- 25:07to be ready? Are we talking about you
- 25:08coming?
- 25:10Or is this for everyone in the world?
- 25:14And the Lord said,
- 25:16"Who, then,
- 25:18is the faithful and sensible steward
- 25:22whom his master will put in charge of
- 25:24his servants
- 25:25to give them their rations at the proper
- 25:28time?
- 25:30Blessed is that slave whom his master
- 25:33finds so doing when he comes."
- 25:36So, he says, "Part of your preparation
- 25:37is watching, catching the door before he
- 25:40touches it, and part of your preparation
- 25:43is serving
- 25:45the others, the other servants in the
- 25:46house.
- 25:49Jesus wants to find us loving each other
- 25:51when he knocks at the door,
- 25:55giving each other our our bread in due
- 25:58season, our rations in due season.
- 26:01Truly, I say to you that he will put him
- 26:03in charge of all his possessions.
- 26:06But if that slave says in his heart, 'My
- 26:08master will be a long time in coming'
- 26:10and begins to beat the slaves, both men
- 26:13and women, and to eat
- 26:16and drink and get drunk,
- 26:20the master of that slave will come on a
- 26:23day when he does not expect him and at
- 26:25an hour
- 26:26he does not know, and he will cut him in
- 26:29pieces and assign him a place with the
- 26:32unbelievers.
- 26:34And that slave who knew his master's
- 26:36will and did not get ready or act in
- 26:39accord with his will will receive many
- 26:42lashes.
- 26:44But the one who did not know it and
- 26:45committed deeds worthy of flogging
- 26:48will receive but few.
- 26:51From everyone who has been given much,
- 26:53much will be required. And to whom they
- 26:55entrusted much, of him they will ask the
- 26:57more. So, Peter says, "Okay, you're
- 27:00talking about being ready for the master
- 27:02when he returns.
- 27:03Are you talking to us? Are you talking
- 27:05to everybody?"
- 27:07And Jesus is basically saying, "I'm
- 27:09talking to everybody who belongs in my
- 27:11house. But,
- 27:13there's a difference between those who
- 27:16know the master's will and those who do
- 27:18not."
- 27:20So, he's saying leaders
- 27:22who are responsible for feeding the
- 27:25other slaves and guiding the other
- 27:27slaves and telling the other servants,
- 27:30"This is what my master wants done when
- 27:32he gets back."
- 27:34They know the master's will.
- 27:37All right? But, those who they mislead,
- 27:40those who they lead astray into
- 27:42drunkenness or stupidity,
- 27:45they're going to be beaten with fewer
- 27:46stripes
- 27:48than the ones who were left with the
- 27:49instructions and knew more. So, he's
- 27:51saying to Peter, "I'm talking to
- 27:52everybody, but I'm especially talking to
- 27:55anybody who would be a leader,
- 27:58a leading steward, a slave with
- 28:00responsibilities."
- 28:03And he says that one of the things
- 28:04that's going to make him the most angry
- 28:06is if the leader starts to abuse
- 28:10the other servants in the house, starts
- 28:12to beat them, men and women. Says, "If
- 28:15he does that, I'm going to chop him in
- 28:17pieces and give him his place
- 28:20with the unbelievers."
- 28:23That's pretty rough situation. Jesus did
- 28:26not look kindly on that.
- 28:29I have come to cast fire upon the earth.
- 28:33And how I wish it were already kindled.
- 28:39But, I have a baptism to undergo.
- 28:42And how distressed I am until it is
- 28:45accomplished.
- 28:47Do not suppose that I came to grant
- 28:49peace on earth.
- 28:51I tell you, no,
- 28:53but rather division.
- 28:56From now on, five members in one
- 28:58household will be divided, three against
- 29:01two and two against three. They will be
- 29:03divided, father against son and son
- 29:05against father, mother against daughter
- 29:08and daughter against mother,
- 29:09mother-in-law against daughter-in-law
- 29:11and daughter-in-law against
- 29:12mother-in-law.
- 29:16This is a powerful statement. Jesus
- 29:18says, "I didn't come here
- 29:21to maintain status quo.
- 29:24I didn't come here to massage your
- 29:26traditions."
- 29:28And somebody could get very offended
- 29:30right now. He's dividing families.
- 29:33He's bringing truth and families are
- 29:36going to divide themselves
- 29:38based on whether they choose the truth
- 29:41or reject it.
- 29:45Jesus says, "I came to cast a fire upon
- 29:47the earth."
- 29:49That's a scary, revolutionary
- 29:52image.
- 29:54He wants
- 29:55something to come that changes the
- 29:57situation.
- 29:59And he says, "I am distressed until that
- 30:02fire comes."
- 30:03Now, what does this make you think of?
- 30:06It makes you think of when he says, "It
- 30:08is expedient that I go away, or else the
- 30:13comforter will not come."
- 30:15The Holy Spirit.
- 30:17And when did the fire come on earth?
- 30:21On the day of Pentecost.
- 30:22When there came from heaven a sound like
- 30:24a mighty rushing wind, and there
- 30:26appeared divided tongues as a fire, as
- 30:29they were all filled with the Holy
- 30:30Spirit.
- 30:32So, he's basically saying, "I came to
- 30:35cast the power and fire of the Holy
- 30:38Spirit on on earth.
- 30:41And I don't feel like I have fulfilled
- 30:43my mission until that comes. I am
- 30:46distressed
- 30:48until you guys get the power that can
- 30:51make you sons of God. But he says, "I
- 30:53have a baptism to undergo."
- 30:56And the baptism he's talking about is
- 30:57not a water baptism. That's already
- 30:59happened a long time ago with John in
- 31:02the River Jordan.
- 31:03The baptism he's talking about is the
- 31:05baptism of his death, the total
- 31:08immersion
- 31:10into God's sacrificial purpose at the
- 31:14cross.
- 31:16"Not my will, but your will be done."
- 31:18That's the baptism that he's talking
- 31:20about.
- 31:21And really nothing that he's been
- 31:23describing is possible.
- 31:25The building of the kingdom, the seeking
- 31:27it first, the proper stewardship,
- 31:31none of this is possible unless the
- 31:33power of the Holy Spirit comes.
- 31:37And he was also saying to the crowds,
- 31:40"When you see a cloud rising in the
- 31:42west, immediately you say, 'A shower is
- 31:45coming.' And so it turns out.
- 31:48And when you see a south wind blowing,
- 31:50you say, 'It will be a hot day.' And it
- 31:53turns out that way.
- 31:55You hypocrites,
- 31:57you know how to analyze the appearance
- 32:00of the earth and the sky,
- 32:02but why do you not analyze [music] this
- 32:04present time?
- 32:07On your way there, make an effort to
- 32:09settle with them,
- 32:10so that he may not drag you before the
- 32:13judge, and the judge turn you over to
- 32:15the officer, and the officer throw you
- 32:18into prison.
- 32:19I say to you, you will not get out of
- 32:22there until you have paid the very last
- 32:25cent."
- 32:26I know that this is a good principle for
- 32:28how to settle a legal dispute, and we
- 32:30should all take it, but I don't I think
- 32:32that's not what he's saying.
- 32:34I think he's saying,
- 32:36"You're coming to a judgment
- 32:38in your life,
- 32:40and you're not getting right with God.
- 32:43You can't read that you're about to be
- 32:45in front of a magistrate, and that
- 32:47magistrate is going to pass you to a
- 32:48judge, and before you know it, you're
- 32:51going to be
- 32:52handed down a judgment that you can't
- 32:54reverse." So, he's saying, "Get your
- 32:56life in order.
- 32:58Settle quickly with your adversary, your
- 33:01opponent, while you're on the way."
- 33:03So, what he's telling them, these
- 33:05Pharisees, these hypocrites, is that
- 33:07they should engage with Jesus, because
- 33:09they're about to be before a magistrate,
- 33:12and then they're going to stand before
- 33:13the judge of the earth, and it's going
- 33:15to be too late.
