- 0:00Luke 10:1
- 0:03Now after this the Lord appointed 70
- 0:06others and sent them in pairs ahead of
- 0:08him to every city and place where he
- 0:11himself was going to come.
- 0:14And he was saying to them, "The harvest
- 0:16is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
- 0:21Therefore, beseech the Lord of the
- 0:23harvest to send out laborers into his
- 0:26harvest.
- 0:27Go, behold, I send you out as lambs in
- 0:31the midst of wolves.
- 0:34Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes,
- 0:38and greet no one on the way.
- 0:41Whatever house you enter, first say,
- 0:44"Peace be to this house." If a man of
- 0:47peace is there, your peace will rest on
- 0:49him. But if not, it will return to you.
- 0:53Stay in that house eating and drinking
- 0:56what they give you.
- 0:57For the laborer is worthy of his wages.
- 1:01Do not keep moving from house to house.
- 1:04Whatever city you enter and they receive
- 1:06you, eat what is set before you and heal
- 1:09those in it who are sick and say to
- 1:11them, "The kingdom of God has come near
- 1:14to you."
- 1:16But whatever city you enter and they do
- 1:19not receive you, go into its streets and
- 1:22say, even the dust of your city, which
- 1:26clings to our feet, we wipe off in
- 1:29protest against you. Yet be sure of
- 1:32this, that the kingdom of God has come
- 1:35near.
- 1:36I say to you, it will be more tolerable
- 1:39in that day for Sodom than for that
- 1:42city.
- 1:43So Jesus is launching a very intentional
- 1:48widespread ministry campaign
- 1:52and he is intending to bring his message
- 1:54through one city after another. But he
- 1:57appoints about 70 people to go two by
- 2:01two into these cities and basically
- 2:04prepare the way for him. Basically go
- 2:07and get people ready to hear what he's
- 2:10going to bring when he shows up.
- 2:13And he tells them that he doesn't want
- 2:15them taking provision.
- 2:18And that's because
- 2:20he wants
- 2:22them to not come in as outside
- 2:26professionals paid and supplied by
- 2:28someone else. Instead, he wants them to
- 2:30build relationships.
- 2:32He wants there to be a kind of mutual
- 2:35interdependence.
- 2:37He wants the disciples to need the help
- 2:40of the people whom they are coming to
- 2:42speak to just like those people
- 2:44presumably need the help of the message
- 2:47and the grace that the disciples are
- 2:49coming to bring. So he tells them don't
- 2:52move around from house to house. Stay
- 2:55where you're getting help. Stay where
- 2:57there's a connection because he wants
- 2:59relationships to strengthen. He wants
- 3:03connections to deepen. He's not wanting
- 3:05them to just be a one-off um encounter
- 3:11moving so fast like modern evangelists
- 3:14that you hardly know who they are. He
- 3:16wants people to develop a connection, a
- 3:19relationship that lasts. And he tells
- 3:22them that if they if they come into a
- 3:25house and they meet a person of peace,
- 3:29of shalom, that someone is there who
- 3:32recognizes the gift and the grace that
- 3:34they're bringing, then stay there and
- 3:36let their peace, their sense of
- 3:39settledness, their sense of purpose and
- 3:41blessing be on that man. But if not, and
- 3:45the city won't receive them, then shake
- 3:47even the dust off of their feet. And
- 3:50it's an unusual way to express a
- 3:53judgment to shake the dust off of your
- 3:55feet and to say even the dust from your
- 3:58city is going to stay here. What it's
- 3:59saying is we're taking none of your
- 4:02heart, none of your culture, none of
- 4:05your needs with us. You can stay where
- 4:08you are. We're going on without you. And
- 4:11even the dust that clings to our shoes,
- 4:14we want to leave in your city. So it's
- 4:17like the judgment is to say
- 4:20we didn't become one. We're not carrying
- 4:23you in our hearts with us when we leave.
- 4:26And what we brought isn't staying with
- 4:28you. There was no exchange. There was no
- 4:31abiding
- 4:32relationship. You stayed the way you
- 4:35were and even the dust that was on our
- 4:37shoes we left with you.
- 4:40That's what judgment looks like when
- 4:42there's not that connection formed and
- 4:44you and you remain unchanged. And he
- 4:47begins to pronounce these judgments on
- 4:49the towns that didn't change. He says,
- 4:52"Woe to you, Corazine. Woe to you,
- 4:55Betha. For if the miracles had been
- 4:58performed in Ty and Siden, which
- 5:00occurred in you, they would have
- 5:02repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth
- 5:05and ashes.
- 5:07But it will be more tolerable for Ty and
- 5:09Siden in the judgment than for you. And
- 5:12you, Capernium,
- 5:14will not be exalted to heaven, will you?
- 5:17You will be brought down to Hades.
- 5:20The one who listens to you listens to
- 5:22me. Then he turns to his disciples and
- 5:24he keeps speaking. The one who listens
- 5:26to you listens to me and the one who
- 5:29rejects you rejects me. And he who
- 5:33rejects me rejects the one who sent me.
- 5:36So it's all about what are you going to
- 5:39receive from the ministry? What of the
- 5:42ministry is going to stay with you? The
- 5:45disciples were not coming simply with a
- 5:47message. They were carrying a grace.
- 5:51They were handling a promise. They were
- 5:54transmitting a truth. And if they walked
- 5:57out of the city with exactly what they
- 5:59came in, then the city was cursed.
- 6:04But if they deposited some of their
- 6:07grace in that city, then the city
- 6:09realized the purpose for which the
- 6:11disciples were sent. And the purpose
- 6:13ultimately was for them to receive
- 6:15Jesus. And this is a type of the
- 6:18ministry that is still going on to this
- 6:20day that God sends people ahead so that
- 6:24we can bring the message. But then the
- 6:27idea is that he will show up
- 6:30not in some future day or age but his
- 6:34presence will come and they will receive
- 6:36of his grace and they will receive of
- 6:38his spirit. But if they can't receive
- 6:42the fallen imperfect people then they're
- 6:44not going to receive the Lord for whom
- 6:46they came to open the door. The 70
- 6:49returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, even
- 6:52the demons are subject to us in your
- 6:55name. And he said to them, I was
- 6:59watching.
- 7:01And what was he watching? He says, I was
- 7:05watching Satan fall from heaven like
- 7:09lightning.
- 7:11Behold, I have given you authority to
- 7:13tread on serpents and scorpions and over
- 7:16all the power of the enemy, and nothing
- 7:18will injure you. Nevertheless, do not
- 7:21rejoice in this, that the spirits are
- 7:23subject to you, but rejoice that your
- 7:25names are recorded in heaven. So, when
- 7:29Jesus sends out the 70, this is like a
- 7:32precursor of the body of Christ. This is
- 7:35the first large group of people that
- 7:38he's giving power and authority and
- 7:40ministry to. And he's saying, "Go out
- 7:43and begin to minister. Go out and move
- 7:46in the gifts of the spirit. Move in the
- 7:49word of grace. Move in healing. Move in
- 7:53the power that I have that I am sharing
- 7:56with you." And when people receive you,
- 7:58they're not just receiving you, they're
- 8:00receiving me. And as this large group
- 8:05first begins to do this, Jesus sees
- 8:08something. He has a vision. And what is
- 8:11the vision that he has? It's a vision of
- 8:14the dethroning of Satan. He said, "I saw
- 8:20Satan fall like lightning from heaven."
- 8:24Which is to say, this is the emergence
- 8:27of the kingdom. When the body of Christ
- 8:30begins to move in service and ministry
- 8:34and the gifts of the spirit, the power
- 8:37and authority of Satan comes down. His
- 8:40false throne, his false dominion, his
- 8:43control over people's lives comes down.
- 8:46And it comes down so fast, it's like
- 8:49lightning.
- 8:50And that's what Jesus saw in this
- 8:54precursor, this prototype of the body of
- 8:57Christ. He saw the dethroning of Satan.
- 9:00In Matthew, he said, "If I cast out
- 9:02demons by the finger of God, then the
- 9:04kingdom of God has come." Well, now
- 9:06we're seeing that happen on a much wider
- 9:09scale. We're seeing the the devil lose
- 9:12his authority, a dethroning of Satan. At
- 9:16that very moment, Jesus rejoiced greatly
- 9:20in the Holy Spirit. Now, this is
- 9:23unprecedented.
- 9:24He rejoiced greatly. This is a statement
- 9:28that signifies
- 9:30enormous eruptive gladness of heart.
- 9:35Jesus is excited
- 9:38when Jesus tells the woman at the well
- 9:40that the water he gives will become a
- 9:43fountain of living water springing or
- 9:46welling up unto eternal life. That's the
- 9:49same word Jesus had. Joy springing up.
- 9:53He is very excited as if seeing people
- 9:58coordinate to move in his spirit is why
- 10:01he came. And seeing the power of fear
- 10:04and the devil come down, this is why he
- 10:07came. So Jesus at that very time, Luke
- 10:11wants us to know that it was tied to
- 10:14their operation in the spirit. At that
- 10:17very time, literally that hour,
- 10:22Jesus rejoiced greatly in the Holy
- 10:26Spirit and he said, "I praise you, oh
- 10:31Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that
- 10:33you have hidden these things from the
- 10:36wise and intelligent and have revealed
- 10:39them to infants.
- 10:42Yes, Father, for this was well pleasing
- 10:44in your sight. All things have been
- 10:47handed over to me by my father, and no
- 10:50one knows who the Son is except the
- 10:53Father, and who the Father is except the
- 10:57Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to
- 11:02reveal him.
- 11:04Turning to his disciples, he said
- 11:06privately, "Blessed are the eyes which
- 11:09see the things which you see." Okay, so
- 11:14he's saying, "I'm seeing Satan fall like
- 11:17lightning from heaven." And he's
- 11:19praising the father that this power is
- 11:22revealed to those who have become like
- 11:24little children, for this was well
- 11:26pleasing in his sight. And he's saying,
- 11:29"All things have been handed over to
- 11:32me." It's very fascinating that Jesus
- 11:34doesn't praise the father for the
- 11:36authority handed over to him until his
- 11:39followers start operating in that
- 11:41authority because his goal was never to
- 11:44be the only miracle worker. His goal was
- 11:47never to be the only minister of grace.
- 11:49His goal was to launch a messianic
- 11:52nation, an entire people, the body of
- 11:56the anointed one, who would begin to
- 11:58move in his power and grace and service
- 12:01and love to others. Amen. And so he sees
- 12:07the fulfillment of his mandate. He sees
- 12:10his power and authority beginning to be
- 12:13realized when the crowd, the group, the
- 12:1770 begin to operate in the same faith.
- 12:21This is a crowning moment. And he says,
- 12:23"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven
- 12:25and earth that you have hidden these
- 12:26things from the wise and intelligent."
- 12:30This kind of grace does not come through
- 12:34the Greek kind of learning, through the
- 12:36Roman kind of knowledge. This does not
- 12:39come through the Pharisees and scribes
- 12:41kind of understanding. This comes
- 12:43through something completely different.
- 12:45You have revealed them to babes, to
- 12:48infants. Yes, father, for this was well
- 12:52pleasing in your sight. God really liked
- 12:55it this way.
- 12:57All things have been handed over to me
- 12:59by my father, and no one knows who the
- 13:01son is except the father. And no one
- 13:04knows who the father is except the son.
- 13:06and anyone to whom the son wills to
- 13:09reveal him. So he's saying he's seeing
- 13:13this operation in ministry as a
- 13:15revelation of the father through the
- 13:17son.
- 13:20Turning to his disciples, he said
- 13:22privately, "Blessed are the eyes which
- 13:25see the things you see. For I say to you
- 13:28that many prophets and kings wish to see
- 13:32the things which you see and did not see
- 13:35them and to hear the things which you
- 13:37hear and did not hear them. So there is
- 13:41a kind of grace,
- 13:43there is a kind of extension of God's
- 13:46authority through people that is
- 13:50starting here with the 70 that has never
- 13:53happened before in human history. the
- 13:55prophets and the wise men. Everybody has
- 13:58wanted this. Nobody has known this. This
- 14:02is more than a situational anointing.
- 14:04This is God who has placed his authority
- 14:07in his son. And this is him extending
- 14:11that authority into his body.
- 14:14And a lawyer stood up and put him to the
- 14:18test,
- 14:19saying, "Teacher,
- 14:21what shall I do to inherit eternal
- 14:23life?"
- 14:25And he said to him, "What is written in
- 14:28the law? How does it read to you?"
- 14:31And he answered, "You shall love the
- 14:34Lord your God with all your heart and
- 14:36with all your soul and with all your
- 14:38strength and with all your mind and your
- 14:41neighbor as yourself." And he said to
- 14:44him, "You have answered correctly. Do
- 14:47this and you will live."
- 14:50But wishing to justify himself,
- 14:54he said to Jesus, "And who is my
- 14:57neighbor?"
- 15:00Now, why does he say, "Who is my
- 15:03neighbor?"
- 15:05Why does Luke tell us that he says, "Who
- 15:08is my neighbor?" Because he wants to
- 15:11justify
- 15:12himself. H
- 15:15what does that mean? Well, he must have
- 15:18been treating some people pretty badly.
- 15:23And he must have felt the conviction of
- 15:26the word of God when he said the words,
- 15:29"And you shall love your neighbor as
- 15:30yourself." He must have said, "I hope
- 15:32that doesn't include the Samaritans.
- 15:35I hope that doesn't include Joe down the
- 15:37street cuz I really don't like him. But
- 15:39since he's six doors down, maybe he's
- 15:41not my neighbor anymore."
- 15:43So, he's trying to get out of the
- 15:46commandment of the scripture. He's
- 15:48trying to justify himself. Let's make
- 15:50this let's dial this in so it doesn't
- 15:52include me and my little squabble with
- 15:55my neighbor. But wishing to justify
- 15:58himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is
- 16:00my neighbor?"
- 16:02And Jesus replied and said, "A man was
- 16:06going down from Jerusalem to Jericho
- 16:10and fell among robbers,
- 16:13and they stripped him and beat him and
- 16:16went away, leaving him half dead."
- 16:19Now, this story isn't told anywhere else
- 16:21in the Gospels.
- 16:24And by chance a priest was going down on
- 16:29that road, and when he saw him, he
- 16:32passed by on the other side.
- 16:36Likewise, a Levite also, when he came to
- 16:40the place and saw him, passed by on the
- 16:42other side.
- 16:45But a Samaritan
- 16:48who was on a journey came upon him. And
- 16:52when he saw him, he felt compassion.
- 16:58And he came to him and bandaged up his
- 17:00wounds, pouring oil and wine on them.
- 17:04And he put him on his own beast, and
- 17:07brought him to an inn and took care of
- 17:09him.
- 17:10On the next day, he took out two dinari
- 17:14and gave them to the inkeeper and said,
- 17:17"Take care of him, and whatever more you
- 17:19spend when I return, I will repay you."
- 17:24Which of these three do you think proved
- 17:28to be a neighbor to the man who fell
- 17:31into the robbers's hands?
- 17:35And he said the one who showed mercy
- 17:38toward him. Then Jesus said to him, "Go
- 17:43and do the same."
- 17:46Wow.
- 17:49You see,
- 17:51Samaria
- 17:54was not just
- 17:56the northern tribes of Israel. In fact,
- 18:01ethnically speaking, it was only about
- 18:033% Jewish by this point.
- 18:08Because when the conquering pagan kings
- 18:13had overcome Israel,
- 18:16they took away most of the inhabitants
- 18:19and scattered and exiled them into other
- 18:22places.
- 18:24And then they imported
- 18:26strangers, total foreigners with a
- 18:30different ethnic background, different
- 18:32races. They imported them into the land
- 18:34of Samaria.
- 18:37And then they brought in a handful of
- 18:40Jews back into the land to teach the
- 18:43foreigners
- 18:44the ways of the Lord so that they would
- 18:48stop being harassed by the wild beasts
- 18:50and such. But there was a lot of
- 18:53tension, a lot of racial tension, a lot
- 18:57of cultural tension between the
- 19:00Samaritans and the Jews. But in all of
- 19:03Jesus's parables, the Samaritans are the
- 19:06heroes.
- 19:09He's always trying to tell them, you
- 19:11think you're special because of your
- 19:13ethnicity, but you're not. God is
- 19:16looking for those who can still hear his
- 19:18voice. And if that's a Samaritan, he
- 19:20doesn't care
- 19:22what skin color you are. He doesn't care
- 19:24what your family was. He just cares
- 19:26whether you know how to love your
- 19:28neighbor. So when this lawyer comes to
- 19:31Jesus, that means that he is an expert
- 19:34in the law.
- 19:36And he is likely hoping that Jesus will
- 19:40tell him that he can keep abusing the
- 19:42Samaritans. Please tell me the
- 19:44Samaritans are not my neighbor.
- 19:47And instead Jesus completely reverses
- 19:50the equation
- 19:53and he describes how the priest and the
- 19:56Levite and the pious, the righteous
- 19:59people, this teacher of the law would
- 20:01have been a priest or a Levite. You can
- 20:03be sure. and uh he he describes how they
- 20:08treat the man in crisis
- 20:13and he asks which of them proved to be
- 20:19the neighbor to the man who fell in the
- 20:22hands of robbers. You see, they were
- 20:24asking, "Is he my neighbor?" But God was
- 20:27asking, "Will you be his neighbor?"
- 20:31Does that make sense? He completely
- 20:34reversed the equation. And this this is
- 20:39the golden rule
- 20:41to say he was a good Samaritan. Jesus
- 20:45took the word that was a curse word. You
- 20:47are a Samaritan and a heathen. That was
- 20:50like a slang term. And Jesus
- 20:54told their story with so much respect
- 20:56that now to say you're a good Samaritan
- 20:59means that you're the best sort of
- 21:01person.
- 21:02You believe he was turning the whole
- 21:04culture on its head? Now, as they were
- 21:07traveling along, he entered a village,
- 21:09and a woman named Martha welcomed him
- 21:11into her home. She had a sister called
- 21:14Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet,
- 21:16listening to his word. But Martha was
- 21:20distracted with all her preparations.
- 21:23And she came up to him and said, "Lord,
- 21:26do you not care that my sister has left
- 21:28me to do all the serving alone?
- 21:31then tell her to help me.
- 21:35Wow. So human.
- 21:40It's interesting. Martha would have
- 21:42thought that Mary was distracted
- 21:45because Martha thought the most
- 21:47important thing was to get supper on the
- 21:49table.
- 21:51But Luke thought that Martha was
- 21:54distracted
- 21:55because it seems like the most important
- 21:58thing was to be sitting at the feet of
- 22:00Jesus and hearing his word.
- 22:03And the Lord answered and said to her,
- 22:06Martha, Martha,
- 22:09he doesn't say it once, he says it
- 22:11twice. Martha, Martha,
- 22:14you are worried and bothered about so
- 22:18many things.
- 22:23But only one thing is necessary
- 22:29for Mary has chosen the good part which
- 22:33shall not be taken away from her.
- 22:36This is a very short conversation.
- 22:39That's the whole thing right there. And
- 22:41what is Jesus's point?
- 22:45He's trying to tell her that the source
- 22:47of your anxiety
- 22:50is that you care about more than one
- 22:52thing.
- 22:54You are worried and bothered about many
- 22:57things,
- 22:59but a successful life is worried about
- 23:03one thing and that is to hear the voice
- 23:07of God and act on it.
- 23:10So he's saying
- 23:13it's not about serving. It's not about
- 23:15dinner.
- 23:16It's about remembering that there's only
- 23:18one thing that matters.
- 23:21Martha, Martha, you are worried and
- 23:23bothered about so many things.
- 23:28But Mary has chosen one
- 23:32thing, and it's the necessary thing.
- 23:36And she's gotten the good part out of
