0:01last night at our we have a Bible study
0:04in our home the old log cabin when the
0:08weather's good enough for people to be
0:10able to get up the driveway
0:12we had a Bible study last night in our
0:15home and some guys came and they asked
0:18me a very important question they're
0:21young believers very zealous and they
0:23said you know and if I do something out
0:29of just sheer obedience but I don't feel
0:32anything I'm not moved by love I'm not
0:35moved by by any sense of affection
0:40toward God I'm just doing it because
0:42it's obedience should I do it and I said
0:46absolutely we are called to obey God we
0:50are called to obey God regardless of our
0:54disposition regardless of what we are
0:56feeling we are called to walk in
0:58obedience but we got talking and one of
1:02them said you know you need to put this
1:04on film so so here I am I'm gonna put it
1:07on film here for a few minutes and I
1:09would like to talk to you especially you
1:11young believers about about loving God
1:14and about obedience and how those two
1:17things go together now first of all
1:19let's talk about how do we grow in our
1:22love for God you know when I was a young
1:25believer I would I was keenly aware of
1:28the fact that I needed to grow in my
1:30love for God and my question was how you
1:33know and I'm still aware of that as long
1:36as we're walking here on this planet
1:38we're going to have a need to to be well
1:41to be loving God and when I was young
1:45what we would do you know you would go
1:47to these meetings or go to revivals or
1:49go to some conference and and it was all
1:52very excitable you know the preaching
1:54was very good the music was very good
1:57you were around other believers and it
1:58seemed like you know your love for God
2:01would would increase at least your zeal
2:03but then after a couple of days you know
2:05after the conference is over you find
2:07that you're kind of back in the same
2:09place and I knew that wasn't
2:13but you know how do we grow in our love
2:18for God I mean in a biblical way in a
2:20way that's really going to remain well
2:24I'd like to share that with you and I
2:27find that Romans 12 verse 1 and 2 is
2:31very very helpful in this matter
2:33let me just read it Paul says I I urge
2:36you brethren therefore I urge you
2:38brethren by the mercies of God to
2:39present your bodies a living and Holy
2:41Sacrifice acceptable to God which is
2:44your spiritual service of worship now do
2:47you see here Paul is asking the greatest
2:49thing he could possibly ever ask of a
2:52person to offer their life as a
2:54sacrifice not to another man not to the
2:58church or some ecclesiastical
3:00organization but to offer their lives as
3:03a living sacrifice to God now what what
3:08could be strong enough to motivate a
3:10human being to literally give their life
3:14away the most precious thing they
3:16possess to give their life away for the
3:19sake of God in the name of God well Paul
3:22tells us here actually it's embedded
3:24here in this verse he says therefore I
3:26urge you brethren by the mercies of God
3:29he's urging them to give their life away
3:31by the mercies of God now what are those
3:36mercies well actually Paul has spent the
3:39first eleven chapters in the book of
3:41Romans explaining what those mercies are
3:43he starts off in Romans 1 through 3
3:46generally we can say that he's talking
3:48about the radical depravity of man that
3:52we are sinners that we are enemies of
3:54God that we deserve God's wrath but then
3:58he gets to two four and five and and he
4:01talks about the salvation the mercies of
4:04God in Jesus Christ what God has done
4:07for us in the person and work of Christ
4:09and how that is the greatest revelation
4:12of his love of his mercy of His grace
4:15and then he goes on and in chapters 6 7
4:18and 8 he tells us how to live the
4:20Christian life even in the midst of
4:22struggling with sin how to live the
4:24Christian life and how we will come out
4:26of
4:26this thing victorious because of the one
4:28who's working in us this glorious and
4:32mighty God and then he gets two chapters
4:34nine 10 and 11 and he's talking about
4:37not just Israel people misunderstand
4:39this but the whole relationship between
4:41Israel and the Gentile nations and how
4:44God is evangelizing or doing a
4:47redemptive work in the whole planet with
4:50all peoples and in the end we come to
4:53the conclusion that he is a great and a
4:56faithful God so what are we saying how
5:02do we grow in our in our devotion to God
5:06how do we grow in our self-sacrifice how
5:10do we grow in our love for God the
5:14answer is the more we discover about God
5:19and the attributes the excellencies the
5:23beauties of God that are revealed in the
5:26scriptures and and particularly through
5:29the gospel of Jesus Christ the more we
5:32know who God is the more our love will
5:36grow now let me explain to you how this
5:38works
5:39the Bible teaches very very clearly that
5:42a man is born with a heart that is
5:45turned against God at best it is cold as
5:49a stone it's it's like an inanimate
5:52thing in its relationship with God it
5:54wants nothing to do with God and it does
5:56not respond to God but it does respond
5:58to every sort of wicked stimuli well
6:02that person that unconverted Unruh
6:04generated person the more they learn
6:08about the beauties the excellencies of
6:10God the more they'll hate him that's
6:13what Romans 7 is about the more god's
6:16nature is revealed to a sinful man
6:18through the revelation of the law the
6:20more that man is going to kick against
6:22that law because he hates god he hates
6:24god's righteousness he hates god's
6:26holiness and he hates god's law but if
6:29you're a christian you're not that man
6:30if you're a christian your heart has
6:33been regenerated it's been made new and
6:36it has new affections if you're truly a
6:39chris
6:39the more your heart learns about who God
6:43is and especially what God has done for
6:46you in Christ the more you learn that
6:50doctrine the more you grasp that
6:52theological knowledge what's going to
6:53happen is going to draw out of you your
6:56affections and those affections are
6:59going to drive you to obedience so you
7:03know just think about it for a moment
7:04especially you young believers how
7:08little believers actually study the
7:12attributes and works of God how little
7:16preaching we hear on the attributes and
7:18works of God now I think we're beginning
7:20to understand why people even God's
7:23people are so dull in their love for God
7:29is there so little knowledge of God we
7:33don't grow in our love for God well let
7:34me put it this way imagine I don't know
7:37if any of you studied physics but let me
7:38just give you a little physics problem
7:40here let's say that I'm laying on the
7:42ground and flat on my back and you look
7:46over there and you see me laying on the
7:48ground and then you see me grab a hold
7:51with two hands my two hands you see me
7:53grab my belt as I'm laying on the ground
7:56and I start pulling up fiercely even
7:59violently on my belt and you're kind of
8:03curious so you walk over and you go
8:05brother Paul what what are you doing and
8:08I say well I'm trying to get up let me
8:10go what I said well I'm trying to get up
8:13I'm trying to get up you say well
8:16brother Paul have you ever studied
8:17physics because if you you'd studied
8:20physics you would know that in order to
8:22get up that way by pulling on your belt
8:24you have to be acted upon by an outside
8:27force that has this strength to lift you
8:31off the ground you can't lift yourself
8:33off the ground it's the proverbial you
8:35can't pull yourself up by your own
8:36bootstraps do you see that's what most
8:39believers are trying to do they'll go to
8:41a conference or they'll read a book and
8:43they'll get all zealous and kind of like
8:45twisting up a wind-up toy you know just
8:48you go and you hear the wonderful music
8:50and all this thing and you just get so
8:51twisted up and Wow
8:53up and the problem is though it just
8:55runs down really quick it spins out and
8:58in a few days all the maybe even boasts
9:01you made about how much you love God
9:02seemed to come to nothing just poof like
9:04that what you need is something else and
9:08and this is going to shock some of you
9:10young believers you're gonna sit there
9:12and go oh my that can't be true you what
9:15you need is theology you say well I
9:19don't want any of that theology stuff
9:20well just listen to what you're saying
9:22when you say that theology comes from
9:26the Greek word Thais which means God and
9:29the Greek word logos which is talking
9:32about a discourse or a word when you say
9:36I don't want any of that theology
9:37brother Paul what you're saying is I
9:39don't want to hear a word about God I
9:42don't want to do a study about God I
9:45don't want to listen to a discourse or
9:47read a discourse or dissertation on God
9:50well that's true about you you've got a
9:52really big problem because if you know
9:56God as a Christian then you're gonna
9:59want to know more about him and that's
10:01what theology is about you know
10:03sometimes young Christian I hear people
10:04say this you know they'll tell new
10:07believers you know when you're reading
10:08the Bible you know after you read a
10:11passage ask yourself what is this saying
10:13about about you what is this saying
10:17about you and what you need to do and
10:19who you are that's the first thing you
10:22need to think about no it's not that's
10:24not the first thing you need to think
10:25about it all matter of fact that's the
10:26last thing you need to think about when
10:28you read the Bible the first thing you
10:31need to ask yourself is what is this
10:33saying about God what is it revealing to
10:37me about who God is that's what's
10:42important because honestly if your heart
10:46has truly been regenerated if the Spirit
10:48of God through the spirit of God you've
10:50been born again then the more you know
10:53about God and especially God as he's
10:55revealed in the cross of Christ the more
10:58you know about him the more you're gonna
10:59love him and that's why we we grow in
11:03knowledge
11:04girl in grace you know I have spent so
11:07many years of my life running around the
11:12world preaching and I'm getting older
11:16and people say you know but your zeal
11:18seems to just keep growing how is that
11:20well it's not because I have some
11:23special gift it's because I study God I
11:29want to know who this person is because
11:33the more I see of him the more I want to
11:36be like him
11:37the more I want to trust him the more I
11:43want to glorify him speak of him you see
11:49one of the greatest problems that can
11:51happen is when a people when they are
11:54ignorant of God in the absence of a true
11:58knowledge of God you'll always fill in
12:02the gaps with something false with
12:05something false so my encouragement to
12:08you if you want to grow in the love of
12:09God what should you do study the
12:12Scriptures and study the scriptures not
12:15to find these life principles to give
12:18you your best life now study the
12:20scriptures in order to know this person
12:23who created you and redeemed you and
12:25loves you
12:27his Excellency's know no bounds his
12:30beauties his powers you know when we get
12:35to heaven I hear a lot of people oh I
12:36can't wait to get to heaven why do you
12:42want to walk down streets of gold you
12:45want to swing on gates of pearl I mean
12:48you only do that for a few months I
12:51would imagine and become kind of boring
12:53what makes heaven heaven heaven is
12:57heaven because there is an infinite
13:00beauty there that cannot be exhausted
13:03and I'm not talking about heaven as a
13:06creation I'm talking about the Creator
13:09who made it you see everything is finite
13:13everything has an end to it you can
13:16search it out to the
13:17final point and then there's nothing
13:19more to know but with regard to God
13:22that's different he is infinite so
13:26throughout eternity we will be tracking
13:29down tracing these excellencies of his
13:34attributes and works these beauties
13:36these graces and at the end of a
13:39thousand eternities will never reach the
13:41end because there is no end that's the
13:44beauty of heaven
13:45it's the revelation of God in the person
13:47of Jesus Christ so what is my
13:50encouragement to you if you want to be
13:52obedient and obedient for the sake of
13:56your love for God and his love for you
13:59then where do you start you start in the
14:02scriptures and you start by studying who
14:06God is who is he who is he now having
14:12said that someone asked me they said
14:15well brother Paul is there ever times
14:16when you don't feel like anything and
14:19you obey and I say yes as a matter of
14:23fact it's quite frequent you know for
14:28many many years I've lived my life with
14:30a lot of pain a lot of pain and
14:33sometimes when I wake up in the morning
14:36the first thing I do is grimace and then
14:38I I think about how I'm going to get out
14:40of bed with the least amount of pain and
14:42sometimes it's it's even nauseating it's
14:46not very fun and then I think about all
14:49I need to do in the mission the emails
14:51to answer the missionaries to speak with
14:54the the things to write and prepare the
14:57problems to solve and and everything
14:59after after not 10 years or 20 years but
15:02more than 30 years of doing the same
15:04thing and sometimes I don't feel like
15:08anything I get out of bed sometimes
15:11there's no sense consciousness of the
15:14presence of God sometimes to get out of
15:17bed and you just you're just tired but
15:21you get out of bed why because
15:25it's not feeling it's what you know you
15:31know that he's worthy and you know that
15:35he is and you know that he is faithful
15:37so whether you feel anything or not you
15:39know that you need to get up you need to
15:43study the Scriptures you need to obey
15:45the scriptures and you need to keep
15:47walking and it's in those times I
15:50believe it's in those times when I feel
15:52like nothing it's just darkness
15:56everywhere and yet I walk in obedience I
16:00feel like in those times I am glorifying
16:02God more than in those mountaintop
16:05experiences because what I'm doing I'm
16:08doing purely by faith by faith in how
16:12trustworthy he is there's a passage of
16:15scripture that a lot of young believers
16:17probably never even read but it is very
16:21very powerful and I want to read it to
16:22you to bring this this short admonition
16:25that has gotten a lot more lengthy than
16:28I supposed it would I want to read it to
16:31you before I bring this to a close and
16:35he says this it's in Isaiah chapter 50
16:38he says verse 10 who is among you that
16:43fears the Lord that obeys the voice of
16:46his servant now listen listen what it
16:48says young believer that walks in
16:50darkness and has no light he's not
16:54seeing anything he's not feeling
16:57anything goes on and says let him trust
17:01in the name of the Lord and rely on his
17:05God you see when you know God you don't
17:10have to feel anything you don't have to
17:12feel anything from above and you don't
17:14have to feel anything from within oh
17:16those feelings will come there will be
17:18times of great affection there will be
17:20senses of of his love for you and all
17:23those things and they're marvelous and
17:24wonderful and I wouldn't take away from
17:26them at all but there are also going to
17:28be times when we see this in verse 10
17:32darkness and no light and what are we to
17:37do were to trust in the
17:39of the Lord were to trust in what we
17:42know about God in so many people talking
17:46about faith today and talking about
17:47trust but I really have to doubt many of
17:50the things they're saying because when I
17:51asked them about who God is and I I
17:54asked them to tell me what they believe
17:57about who God is that they have almost
17:59no answer and yet it's impossible to
18:02have a biblical faith apart from a
18:04biblical knowledge of who God is and
18:06what God has promised you see so when we
18:10know that from the study of the
18:12scriptures then we can walk in darkness
18:15we can walk when there is no light when
18:18there is no feeling and we can be
18:20pleasing and honoring to God now look at
18:23the warning he gives behold all of you
18:25who Kindle a fire who encircle yourself
18:28with firebrands walk in the light of
18:30your fire and among the brands you have
18:33set ablaze this you will have from my
18:36hand you will lie down in torment now
18:40indirectly we can apply this this way
18:42there are some people who are just not
18:44content with faith in the Word of God
18:48and sometimes walking and darkness with
18:51no feeling and no sense of light now
18:54they can't they can't function that way
18:56so they have to have something so if
18:59there is no light from God at that
19:00moment they'll fake one artificial light
19:04artificial fire false fire that's not
19:08something that you want to do don't live
19:10your life jumping from one experience to
19:12another don't live your life going to
19:16maybe church services or conferences or
19:18camp meetings where some preacher gets
19:20you all fired up and then you walk in
19:25that for a while and then you fall again
19:26don't do that don't make some artificial
19:30fire and then walk in the light of your
19:32fire instead live your life studying the
19:37Word of God live your life in prayer
19:39live your life seeking out not merely
19:42principles from the Word of God but the
19:45god of the word get to know who he is
19:48and then you'll be able to walk and you
19:50yes yes there will be times of great
19:54emotion of great awareness of God's
19:57presence there will be those times and
20:00they're wonderful and you should obey
20:02God in the midst of those times but
20:04they're also going to be times of
20:05testing where everything is pulled back
20:07and it seems like you're left all alone
20:08in those times you can glorify God more
20:13than in than in any mountaintop
20:16experience and so as a new believer and
20:20that's who I'm trying to give this to
20:22please study the word start in Genesis
20:26read the revelation then do it over and
20:28over and over again and devote yourself
20:31to prayer not just intercession for
20:33needs or for friends or for the mission
20:36field but just communion walking with
20:39God and you'll do well well I hope that
