  2. 0:05Louis Pastor should be remembered for
  3. 0:07more than just inventing the process
  4. 0:09that keeps milk from spoiling Louis
  5. 0:11pastur is one of the Giants of modern
  6. 0:13science it's because of Pastor that we
  7. 0:16worry about whether food is pure that
  8. 0:18medical instruments are sterilized and
  9. 0:20ultimately that antibiotics and vaccines
  10. 0:23even exist he came up with the
  11. 0:24underpinnings of Modern Biology and germ
  12. 0:27Theory and in the process he saved
  13. 0:30millions of people's lives born in Dole
  14. 0:32France on December 27th 1822 Louie
  15. 0:36pastur attended the AOL Normal
  16. 0:38University in Paris before becoming a
  17. 0:41professor of chemistry at the University
  18. 0:43of Le in 1854 he began studying the
  19. 0:46problem of spoilage with beer wine and
  20. 0:49milk he proved that the reason these
  21. 0:51beverages are spoiling was because
  22. 0:52bacteria and other microorganisms were
  23. 0:54coming in from the outside air he
  24. 0:56developed a process called
  25. 0:58pasteurization where these liquids are
  26. 1:00boiled and then cooled thereby getting
  27. 1:02rid of the bacteria and microorganisms
  28. 1:04when you say pasteurization most people
  29. 1:07are linking it to milk or to food
  30. 1:09products but actually it has much more
  31. 1:11long- lasting consequences for example
  32. 1:12we pasteurize medical instruments which
  33. 1:15prevents spread of
  34. 1:16disease Pastor realized that if germs
  35. 1:19were the cause of fermentation then they
  36. 1:21could also be the cause of contagious
  37. 1:23diseases it is because of his research
  38. 1:25that we now know to wash our hands to
  39. 1:27prevent getting sick before the
  40. 1:29development of germ Theory surgeons and
  41. 1:32doctors didn't think that something as
  42. 1:33Tiny as a germ could actually hurt
  43. 1:35something as large as a human being so
  44. 1:38they often didn't even wash their hands
  45. 1:39before cutting into people and in those
  46. 1:41days surgery was often a death sentence
  47. 1:44it's through Pasteur's work that people
  48. 1:46understood that these infectious
  49. 1:48diseases were caused by bacteria as well
  50. 1:50as fungi that were coming in from the
  51. 1:52environment and invading the body
  52. 1:55despite skepticism from the medical
  53. 1:57community Pastor continued with his
  54. 1:59research on germ Theory eventually he
  55. 2:02Not only was able to explain the causes
  56. 2:04of many diseases but figured out a way
  57. 2:06to prevent them the concept of vaccines
  58. 2:09wasn't new pure's unique contribution
  59. 2:12was to take the actual bacteria
  60. 2:14responsible for these diseases weaken it
  61. 2:16in the lab and then reintroduce it as a
  62. 2:18vaccine in susceptible people some of
  63. 2:21the diseases that pestor vaccinations
  64. 2:23were able to cure were Anthrax Coler TB
  65. 2:27and
  66. 2:28smallpox the French Academy of Sciences
  67. 2:30finally accepted the results from
  68. 2:32pastor's germ Theory experiments in
  69. 2:351864 Louis pasture gave us an
  70. 2:38understanding of sterile technique and
  71. 2:41the importance of antisepsis within
  72. 2:43medicine in 1888 the pastor Institute in
  73. 2:47Paris was created to further pastor's
  74. 2:49research which continues to this day
  75. 2:52Louie Pastor died on September 28th 1895
  76. 2:56Louis pest's Legacy is felt every day in
  77. 2:59the modern world and all of us are
  78. 3:01familiar with his work whether we know
  79. 3:02it or not pasteurization the theory of
  80. 3:05viruses modern vaccines Hospital
  81. 3:08cleanliness without pastor's work many
  82. 3:10of us wouldn't even be alive today
