- 0:08the government of Horacio Vásquez, one
- 0:10of the former presidents of the
- 0:12Dominican Republic who served from 1924
- 0:15to 1930. In this video, we will discuss
- 0:19his style of government, how Horacio
- 0:22Vásquez rose to power, his
- 0:23characteristics, contributions to the
- 0:26Dominican Republic, and other concepts
- 0:28that will be developed throughout the
- 0:30video. But before we start talking
- 0:33about his government, we have to know
- 0:35who Horacio Vásquez was. Felipe
- 0:38Horacio Vásquez Lajara was born on
- 0:41October 22, 1860, in Estancia Nueva,
- 0:43Moca. His parents were Basilio Vásquez
- 0:46Lizardo and Ramona Lajara Gómez. He
- 0:49was a Dominican military man and
- 0:50politician who served as president of
- 0:52the Dominican Republic for two terms.
- 0:54He acquired significant knowledge. As
- 0:57an adult, he dedicated himself to
- 0:59agricultural and commercial work,
- 1:01traveling frequently to La Vega, where
- 1:03he was connected to socially prominent
- 1:05families. Horacio Vásquez began his
- 1:09political career at age 26 during the
- 1:11Moya revolution, distinguishing himself
- 1:13in the defense of La Vega and
- 1:15supporting the government linked to
- 1:17Ulises Heureaux. Later, he returned to
- 1:20Moca and resumed commercial activities,
- 1:22but upon learning of orders for his
- 1:24assassination, he informed his cousin
- 1:26Ramón Cáceres, which contributed to
- 1:29the conspiracy that ended in the
- 1:30assassination of Heureaux in 1899. And
- 1:35after the fall of the tyranny, he led a
- 1:38provisional government that recognized
- 1:40Juan Isidro Jiménez as president.
- 1:43Although political rivalries caused a
- 1:46rupture that led to the insurrection of
- 1:481902, the departure of Jiménez, and
- 1:51the brief government of Vásquez
- 1:53between 1902 and 1903 with the support
- 1:56of the National Party. Now that we know
- 2:00about Horacio Vásquez, we can define
- 2:03and talk about his second term in
- 2:06office between 1924 and 1930. Horacio
- 2:12Vásquez rose to power after winning
- 2:15the 1924 elections, held after the
- 2:17withdrawal of the U.S. troops that had
- 2:20occupied the Dominican Republic since
- 2:231916, which allowed for the restoration
- 2:25of constitutional order. His government
- 2:30was characterized by respect for public
- 2:33liberties, the push for the
- 2:35modernization of the state through
- 2:37public works, and a policy of relative
- 2:40democratic stability; one of his main
- 2:42measures being the signing of the 1924
- 2:45Dominican-American Convention, which
- 2:47facilitated a loan for the construction
- 2:50of roads, ports, and aqueducts in Santo
- 2:53Domingo, in addition to promoting
- 2:55education and agricultural development.
- 3:00He belonged to the National Party,
- 3:02whose followers were known as "
- 3:03Horacistas," and his cabinet was
- 3:05composed of prominent civilian and
- 3:07political figures of the era, with
- 3:10Federico Velásquez and later José
- 3:12Dolores Alfonseca as vice presidents.
- 3:16His departure from power occurred in
- 3:181930, when the extension of his term
- 3:21and his reelection attempt triggered a
- 3:23political crisis and a rebellion led by
- 3:26the National Guard under the leadership
- 3:29of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, who
- 3:31overthrew him in 1930. Thank you very
- 3:35much for your attention to this
- 3:36documentary. I hope you have learned
- 3:39and enjoyed a little bit about the
- 3:40government of Horacio Vázquez.
