- 1:02objects and manuscripts that form a
- 1:07puzzle one that challenges our own
- 1:10conceptions of who we are and what our
- 1:13purpose as a nation is all our Vital

- 1:39K bran Lee Museum in Paris opened an
- 1:42exhibition of the Philippine anting
- 1:44anting the amulets and medallions that
- 1:48for some Filipinos are still sources of
- 1:51power and
- 1:53[Music]
- 1:56protection the exhibit examined the
- 1:59unique deep-seated spirituality that
- 2:01resulted when our animist beliefs melded
- 2:05with
- 2:07Catholicism through film clips
- 2:09photographs archival footage and actual
- 2:12medallions this first ever International
- 2:15exhibition focused on the anting anting
- 2:18as an indigenous response to
- 2:23colonialism to many modern Filipinos
- 2:26these charms and talismans are mere folk
- 2:28superstition
- 2:30[Music]
- 2:32the image of supernatural abilities and
- 2:34invincibility no doubt bolstered by the
- 2:37films of the late Ramon Ria
- 2:41senior in these movies we see a
- 2:44Celluloid fantasy of the UN an as a
- 2:47source of power that often is used for
- 2:50purposes far from
- 2:53Noble is this what the anting anting
- 2:56truly promises its Believers or are
- 2:58there deeper more spiritual values that
- 3:01these medallions and handkerchiefs
- 3:04promised
- 3:05Believers how do these objects connect
- 3:07our forefathers to a self that was
- 3:10nobler and stronger a self that was in
- 3:13ways they could be proud of
- 3:16[Music]
- 3:21Filipino as objects the anting are
- 3:24medallions of brass copper or sacred
- 3:27wood cast or carved with images of
- 3:30dieties known only to the serious
- 3:34devotees others bear the images of
- 3:37Catholic saints and Angels the Virgin
- 3:40the nazareno the sanino and the Holy
- 3:44[Music]
- 3:47Trinity handkerchiefs inscribed with
- 3:50images are also another form of anting
- 3:54anting common to both Medallion and
- 3:56handkerchiefs are the mysterious letters
- 3:59anagrams and phrases known as theal
- 4:02often derived from Latin
- 4:05prayers these are the incantations that
- 4:07will empower the object when recited
- 4:11[Music]
- 4:14regularly say an an thing and you will
- 4:16still be pointed to the side streets
- 4:19around the kapo church here vendors sell
- 4:22newly made amulets from Batangas and
- 4:27cabit the Stalls and the wear sold in
- 4:29the very shadow of Philippine
- 4:31catholicism's most famous Church Point
- 4:34to the unique syncretic nature of these
- 4:40[Music]
- 4:48Talis Michael haval luas who served as
- 4:51researcher and assistant curator for the

- 8:14for serious Believers in the anting
- 8:16anting owning a powerful medal does not
- 8:19begin and end when one buys one in kapo
- 8:23the process of empowering The Medallion
- 8:26demands much more than just purchase
- 8:29physical fortitude sacrifice a communion
- 8:33with nature at its most
- 8:35sacred these are all asked from
- 8:38Believers and it begins with a trip to
- 8:40the sacred mountain of
- 8:47banaha at the foot of the mountain we
- 8:50met with Carver Rodell
- 8:54basilio his pieces are carved from a
- 8:57sacred wood called digo
- 8:59which for many Believers is a more
- 9:01potent material for their
- 9:06[Music]
- 9:08talismans his story traces a
- 9:10transformation from a skilled commercial
- 9:13Artisan to a Believer who skills now
- 9:16serve a deeper purpose

- 12:33only taking the first step towards the
- 12:35realization of the amulets
- 12:37power the journey through baha's holy
- 12:40places sanctifies not only their anting
- 12:43anting but their very being as well

- 15:19the landscape of banaha the
- 15:21all-encompassing presence of nature
- 15:23brings to mind the presence of the mag
- 15:27Supreme Being the infinito dios the
- 15:30prehispanic Bala a diety who created the
- 15:34universe and all the spirits and Saints
- 15:37even the Holy Trinity of
- 15:44crrom his story is seen in The Medallion
- 15:47popularly known as the
- 15:50infin the Bala hidden in
- 15:54stone the design of this Medallion is
- 15:57one of the oldest of the unthink
- 15:59and unlike other motifs which feature
- 16:03Catholic saints The infino Medallion is
- 16:06uniquely
- 16:07Filipino it also tells an intriguing
- 16:15story an ancient god who allows himself
- 16:18to be baptized by his own
- 16:20creation but will only let the tip of
- 16:23his finger be subjected to the Catholic
- 16:25right a clue surely to the hidden
- 16:28animism that still pervades our faith
- 16:33[Music]
- 16:46[Applause]
- 16:53today Dennis vagos is a professor of
- 16:56history and anthropology with the Ken
- 16:59interest in the social
- 17:01[Music]
- 17:05sciences his book you shall be as Gods
- 17:09examines the anting anting as a social
- 17:11phenomenon as an instrument of
- 17:14empowerment for many Filipinos who
- 17:16sought Justice and
- 17:20freedom Messianic calls um date back up
- 17:25um to the 19th century as early as 1840s
- 17:30mearian Cur one of these was the um
- 17:35Cadia de San Jose founded by apolinario
- 17:38DEA Cruz or known as hermano
- 17:41P well they use anting anting in the
- 17:44sense that they used portraits and the
- 17:47relics of
- 17:48saints uh to protect them against um
- 17:52harm and against evil and uh they became
- 17:56so
- 17:57controversial that they Spanish
- 17:59government the Spanish colonial
- 18:01government were was alarmed because uh
- 18:04they were uh you know banding together
- 18:08with the purpose of uh establishing a
- 18:10new religion which is uh uh not really
- 18:14in conflict with the Catholic church but
- 18:17uh founded by Filipinos so therefore it
- 18:21was more or less like a the start of a
- 18:24nationalist movement to uh remove itself
- 18:27from the church from the Catholic church
- 18:29so par it's like they were trying to
- 18:32establish a Filipino Catholic church so
- 18:35it's not really against Catholicism but
- 18:37it's not really um a movement to uh
- 18:43Drive Away Catholicism from the
- 18:45Philippines but to have Catholicism
- 18:49adopted by Filipinos in their own brand
- 18:52of faith and belief so therefore the use
- 18:55of anting anting by this group is
- 18:58already a Filipino element because even
- 19:02before the coming of the Spaniards the
- 19:04Filipinos were already believing in
- 19:06amulets and objects of power so
- 19:10therefore uh the use of anting anting by
- 19:12the kradia headed by hermano p is a
- 19:16totally different uh religious
- 19:20approach because by that time they were
- 19:23already
- 19:25synthesizing uh the belief of the uh
- 19:29Catholic to the uh with the belief of
- 19:31the local religion which is uh uh folk
- 19:36Catholicism and also it uh it's like a a
- 19:41recurring theme in Philippine social
- 19:43history um for example in
- 19:471930s there was a um sista movement
- 19:52which also use anting anting against the
- 19:56colonial government and also so in
- 20:001967 there was a very uh uh
- 20:04controversial group called The payang
- 20:06Malaya headed by Valentine Doos Santos
- 20:09from Bol who used also anting anting to
- 20:14overthrow the Marcos government it is a
- 20:17very populist uh uh in nature when you
- 20:23say populist it means uh it became a
- 20:27driving force of the mass
- 20:29to band together to fight against a a
- 20:34common enemy for
- 20:36example the use of anting
- 20:39anting by uh the Filipinos throughout
- 20:43history from from the Spanish period up
- 20:45to the present time is a revitalizing
- 20:49factor which means that it is a it is a
- 20:54unifying Factor the belief in a powerful
- 20:58object or powerful objects is a
- 21:02universal revitalizing Factor wherein
- 21:07there is a symbol the an anting be
- 21:10became a symbol the symbol to un unify
- 21:14themselves against a common enemy so
- 21:18therefore the anting anting is not only
- 21:20an object but at as a popular symbol of
- 21:23power of struggle against a common enemy
- 21:31for Dennis the popular present day
- 21:33notion of the an an thing as a quick
- 21:35means to success or notoriety is a
- 21:39shallow one it does not do justice to
- 21:41the inherent spirituality that our
- 21:44forefathers imbued in their
- 21:46talismans when I dug deep into the an
- 21:51an phenomenon it occurred to me that
- 21:55there was more to the
- 21:56belief than winning girls or winning
- 22:00Lotto or protecting yourself against uh
- 22:04hold doers there's more to that it's
- 22:06like a religion in itself it's it's more
- 22:11like you have god with you uh you can
- 22:15contain God within a medallion or within
- 22:17a scapular so therefore if we talk about
- 22:21an thing an thing we are not talking
- 22:23about objects of faith alone but objects
- 22:26of power that can sustain our our
- 22:29existence that can sustain
- 22:37ourselves to contain God in medal and to
- 22:41have that God with you in a way that is
- 22:44both powerful and very
- 22:48personal as a symbol of our history and
- 22:51culture the Anan thing speaks for the
- 22:53Filipinos who have been most
- 22:55marginalized and oppressed
- 22:58in these medallions we see the common
- 23:00Filipinos desire for a society that is
- 23:03just fair and
- 23:06[Music]
- 23:07God-fearing we see also their ultimate
- 23:11goal more than protection or power or
- 23:14success it
- 23:16was that these Talisman offered the
- 23:20return to our trer and better selves
