- 0:00My name is Hian and I'm your examiner
- 0:02today. Can you tell me your full name
- 0:04please?
- 0:05>> My full name is Lang Auan.
- 0:08>> Okay. Now, now let's move to part one.
- 0:10In the first part of the test, I'd like
- 0:12to ask you a few question about
- 0:14yourself. Let's talk about what you do.
- 0:17Do you work or are you a student?
- 0:20>> I'm working as a freelance teacher. Um,
- 0:23I primarily offer classes to um, high
- 0:28school students, but there are also
- 0:30lessons for younger kids. It's just
- 0:32that, you know, these are few and far
- 0:34between.
- 0:36>> What do you like most about your job?
- 0:39>> Well, there are certainly many things I
- 0:41like about it. I mean, um, the pay is
- 0:44pretty good and, um, I get to teach, you
- 0:47know, science in English, which is great
- 0:50because my Vietnamese isn't that great
- 0:53when it comes to, you know, scientific
- 0:55concepts. But, um, for me, you know, the
- 0:58the cherry on top is the fact that, you
- 1:00know, I get to do, you know, fun
- 1:02experiments with my students. I mean,
- 1:05the other day we blew something up which
- 1:07the kids loved.
- 1:10What technologies do you use for work?
- 1:13>> Well, um when it comes to my online
- 1:17classes, um I use uh Zoom as the ma main
- 1:21platform. And what's great about Zoom is
- 1:24that, you know, I can show my students
- 1:26uh YouTube videos and um engaging
- 1:30simulations which they really enjoy. Um
- 1:33I can also host online games on Cahoot
- 1:37and Blucet but um I'm trying to you know
- 1:41use these platforms in moderation
- 1:44because you know my students um tend to
- 1:47enjoy you know the playing aspect more
- 1:50than the learning aspect.
- 1:54>> Okay. So now let's move to social media.
- 1:56Do you often use social media for
- 1:58entertainment?
- 2:00M I would say so. I mean I have um
- 2:04several apps that um I use to watch
- 2:07videos. Um I definitely have YouTube
- 2:11which is good because um I show my
- 2:14students um experimental procedures and
- 2:18um I also have Tik Tok but I feel like I
- 2:22need to do something about you know the
- 2:24frequency with which I you know view
- 2:26videos on this particular app because
- 2:28you know its algorithm is super
- 2:30effective and u the other day I wanted
- 2:33to get some work done but you know I
- 2:35ended up like doom scrolling for hours
- 2:37on
- 2:40Uh, which social media apps will you
- 2:42delete in the future?
- 2:44>> Well, I'm actually thinking about
- 2:47removing Tik Tok mostly because of the
- 2:51fact that it's very addictive, but you
- 2:54know, I'm trying to build my own page on
- 2:58that platform. So, you know, this is
- 3:01something that I'm going to have to
- 3:02meditate on. Um, I also want to um
- 3:06delete Facebook mostly because I spend
- 3:09too much time on it to the point that I
- 3:12can't really get any work done in the
- 3:14morning.
- 3:17>> Okay. So, what types of app do you want
- 3:19to download?
- 3:21>> Well, I'm thinking about, you know,
- 3:23downloading some apps that can help me
- 3:25enhance my work productivity.
- 3:29So, um I can't think of a particular
- 3:32example at the moment, but you know,
- 3:34there are a few apps out there that help
- 3:36me to, you know, make lists of the
- 3:39things that I'm supposed to do in a day.
- 3:41And I think that they're going to be
- 3:43very useful for me because at the
- 3:44moment, my discipline is kind of like on
- 3:47a slippery slope. Like as I as I've
- 3:50mentioned the other day, I didn't get
- 3:52any work done at all. And I think that I
- 3:54need to get to grips with it.
- 3:56>> Okay. So, now let's move to flowers. Are
- 3:59there many flowers where you live?
- 4:02>> I would say so. Um there is a really
- 4:05nice park close to um my apartment
- 4:09building and there are lots of trees
- 4:12there. So my assumption is that you know
- 4:14they're going to be like uh there's
- 4:16going to be like lots of flowers. It's
- 4:18just that I have never really, you know,
- 4:19paid attention to um the flowers of
- 4:22these plants mostly because, you know,
- 4:24they're too small. But, you know,
- 4:26they're very fragrant, especially in the
- 4:28winter.
- 4:29>> Have you grown any flowers on your own?
- 4:32>> I don't think so. I mean, like a lot of
- 4:35people, I don't have green fingers and
- 4:38um I'm not really good at, you know,
- 4:40taking care of things other than myself.
- 4:44Um I do know a thing or two about
- 4:46growing plants. like you need to make
- 4:48sure that um they get enough sunlight
- 4:51and um you might have to use fertilizers
- 4:54to make sure that they grow healthily.
- 4:56But um you know that's all I can say
- 4:58with regard to you know growing flowers.
- 5:01>> On what occasions do people often give
- 5:04one another flowers?
- 5:06Well, I imagine that um flowers can make
- 5:09good gifts on special occasions like
- 5:11here in Vietnam, we have u many special
- 5:14holidays like um um women's day or a
- 5:20teachers dates. Well, um like I don't
- 5:23get flowers that often, but uh my female
- 5:26colleagues tend to receive flowers on
- 5:29these special days and I can tell that
- 5:31you know they really like um being given
- 5:33flowers because you know they tend to
- 5:36you have a bright smile afterwards.
- 5:41Okay. So now let's move to part two. In
- 5:45the uh in this part two I'm going to
- 5:48give you a topic. You should talk about
- 5:50it between one and two minutes. Before
- 5:52that, you have one minute to make some
- 5:54notes if you want. And here's your
- 5:57topic. I would like you to describe a
- 5:59time when you solve something in in the
- 6:01Skype.
- 6:03Uh, and your time uh for preparation
- 6:06start now.
- 6:18All
- 6:41right.
- 7:10Okay, so your time's up.
- 7:13Uh remember you can speak about this
- 7:14topic between 1 and 2 minutes. And don't
- 7:16worry if I stop you. You should start
- 7:20speaking
- 7:21now.
- 7:22>> Okay. I'm going to tell you about a
- 7:25glorious sunrise that I saw a while ago.
- 7:29So um many many years ago I was working
- 7:33for an educational center and you I was
- 7:36the head of the science department at
- 7:39the time. Um, but I had a lot on my
- 7:42plate and I was like working around the
- 7:45clock getting, you know, projects done.
- 7:48Uh, but at one point I felt like, you
- 7:51know, I was running on empty. So I asked
- 7:55a couple of colleagues of mine to go on
- 7:58a trip to, you know, Sabah, which is a
- 8:01very lovely town in the north of
- 8:03Vietnam. And so we went there and um um
- 8:08it was um during the winter so it was
- 8:11very cold um but um you know we actually
- 8:15planned uh to do a lot of activities. Um
- 8:18we definitely you know paid a visit to
- 8:22you know the local market where we
- 8:24essentially just ate to our hearts
- 8:26content which was my favorite part. And
- 8:29then um a colleague of mine suggested
- 8:31that we should you know go to the
- 8:33mountains to see you know sunrise and um
- 8:38initially I didn't want to do it because
- 8:40like I really uh just wanted to you know
- 8:43go to Sappa to you know just recharge my
- 8:46batteries and you know getting up early
- 8:49in the morning was not exactly you know
- 8:52something that I would enjoy doing but
- 8:54you know um my friends uh convinced me
- 8:58and I decided to, you know, hop on board
- 9:00anyway. And so, um, early in the morning
- 9:04at around like 4:00 or something like
- 9:07that, um, I woke up and, uh, we all went
- 9:10to the mountains. It was very dark and
- 9:13slightly foggy, but, uh, we managed to,
- 9:17you know, make our way to the summit
- 9:19just in time to see the sunrise. Um, it
- 9:22was glorious. I mean, it was beautiful.
- 9:24I'm not quite sure if it was if it was,
- 9:27you know, the trick of the sun, but um
- 9:29like the the clouds looked um
- 9:32psychedelically colorful, which was
- 9:35>> Okay, so your time is up. Now, let's
- 9:38move to part three. I'd like to discuss
- 9:41one or two general question related to
- 9:44what you've been talking about, which is
- 9:46a time when you look at the sky.
- 9:49Uh why may people look up at the sky?
- 9:53Well, I suppose um there are many
- 9:55reasons for people to do that, although
- 9:58it's not something that I would do when
- 10:01I'm at a loose end. Um first off, I
- 10:04would say that um a lot of people might
- 10:07uh look up at the sky when they're on
- 10:10their break. Um and this is especially
- 10:12true when it comes to your office
- 10:14workers who have um you know lots to get
- 10:18through in a day you know doing
- 10:20paperwork or IT technicians who have
- 10:23just you know solved um very difficult
- 10:26uh technical issues. Um they might you
- 10:28know just go out for a breath of fresh
- 10:31air and when they look at the sky they
- 10:34can sort of you know temporarily take
- 10:36their mind off work. Um in addition to
- 10:39that you know sometimes you know there
- 10:42are special occasions when you can see
- 10:45like wonderful things at the sky as
- 10:47well. Like a couple of months ago our
- 10:50country
- 10:51um had this um very special anniversary.
- 10:55Uh it was the 80th anniversary of our um
- 11:00reunification
- 11:01and um during that particular time there
- 11:04were lots of you know airplanes flying
- 11:06around um bringing our national flag
- 11:10out. So that was a very lovely sight to
- 11:12see.
- 11:14>> Okay. Is there any special meaning
- 11:17associated with sunset and sunrise?
- 11:20>> Well um I would say so. I mean I'm not
- 11:25quite sure what uh people actually think
- 11:28about it but um in lots of um the uh
- 11:32literature works that I have read
- 11:35throughout the years um sunsets often
- 11:38represent a new beginning whereas um
- 11:42sorry sunrises um I I think that I
- 11:45messed up these two words for sunrises
- 11:48um when people look at them they're
- 11:50inspired because um they know that um
- 11:53they have a new day ahead and they you
- 11:57know can um do great things to you know
- 11:59improve their work or change their
- 12:01lives. Um with regard to sunsets, um
- 12:05sometimes um they they might be
- 12:08associated with um something negative
- 12:11because um you know that particular
- 12:13color that you see when um the sun falls
- 12:17down um is um in a way saddening but um
- 12:22a lot of people you know actually um
- 12:25look at sunsets as um you know just a
- 12:28beautiful site. I mean the other day um
- 12:30when I was you know crossing Long Bin
- 12:33Bridge, there was this um mesmerizing
- 12:36sunset and lots of people just stopped
- 12:39to take pictures and lots of these
- 12:41photos actually went viral on the
- 12:43internet.
- 12:46>> Uh is it important to learn about stars
- 12:48and planets?
- 12:50Um I would say that um learning about
- 12:55you know stars and planets along with
- 12:56you know other celestial bodies can be
- 12:59an interesting experience but I'm not
- 13:02quite sure if it's genuinely essential.
- 13:05I mean you definitely need to know more
- 13:08about science because like technological
- 13:11development is taking the world by storm
- 13:13and um essentially it's the backbone of
- 13:16all types of development. Um so when you
- 13:19learn about stars and planets perhaps
- 13:22you will learn more interesting things
- 13:26um regarding the technologies that allow
- 13:28you to make important discoveries
- 13:31related to you know uh planets and stars
- 13:35but I wouldn't say that you know it's
- 13:37absolutely crucial because not all of
- 13:39the kids will grow up to be you know
- 13:41astronauts or you know those who you
- 13:44know want to travel to other parts of
- 13:46the universe.
- 13:49What do you think about investing in
- 13:51space projects?
- 13:54>> I think that um space projects can
- 13:58definitely lead to meaningful
- 14:00development but um I think that you know
- 14:04governments need to you know keep tabs
- 14:06on other issues that they are dealing
- 14:09with as well. I mean, I guess when you
- 14:12invest in space projects, um, you might
- 14:15obtain, you know, more advanced
- 14:17technologies, you can develop superior
- 14:20materials that can withstand the harsh
- 14:22conditions in outer space, and you might
- 14:25be able to discover new ways to harness
- 14:27renewable energies as well. Um, but then
- 14:30again, I don't know if, you know, um,
- 14:34researching space is going to get us
- 14:37anything. So you know countries really
- 14:40need to you know keep uh track of you
- 14:43know their investments and to make sure
- 14:45that um they can allocate um funds to
- 14:49you know areas that need support as well
- 14:51like education or healthcare.
- 14:55>> Do you think space tourism is feasible?
- 14:59>> Um
- 15:01well from my point of view is certainly
- 15:03within the realm of possibility. I mean
- 15:07considering our current rate of
- 15:09technological development um perhaps
- 15:12somewhere down the line we will be able
- 15:14to you make space tourism somewhat of a
- 15:18norm. I'm not quite sure if people are
- 15:20actually interested in the idea of you
- 15:22know going to a space station just to
- 15:26you know see what um you know the
- 15:28vastness of space outside of the earth
- 15:31has to offer. But you know from the
- 15:33videos that I have seen from you know
- 15:36those who are working at NASA space
- 15:38stations um well it's quite a sight to
- 15:41behold and um perhaps you know rich
- 15:44people will you know jump on board first
- 15:47and then you know somewhere down the
- 15:49line this type of um tourism might
- 15:52become more commercially available for
- 15:54ordinary individuals as well.
- 15:58>> Okay. So that's the end of your speaking
- 16:01test. Thank you.
- 16:02>> Okay.
