  9. 0:22celebrate everybody

  12. 0:28fellowship and we'll have a quick live
  13. 0:31chat to hear more about his legacy
  14. 0:34program and his association
  15. 0:36john welcome thank you for joining us
  16. 0:39would you be able to just
  17. 0:41quickly introduce yourself and your
  18. 0:42association
  19. 0:44absolutely thank you senior for this
  20. 0:46opportunity
  21. 0:47and thanks to ika my name is john
  22. 0:50jorgensen if you take the first part of
  23. 0:52my last
  24. 0:52name you get georgie that's my camp
  25. 0:55nickname
  26. 0:56and the international camping fellowship
  27. 0:59is
  28. 0:59a an organization of organizations
  29. 1:03uh we began over 30 years ago
  30. 1:07at a small at a national conference in
  31. 1:10the united states
  32. 1:11where we began to realize that camping
  33. 1:14is not
  34. 1:15uh isolated to north america that is
  35. 1:18actually
  36. 1:19embraced across the world in different
  37. 1:22ways but
  38. 1:23in many similar ways and so
  39. 1:26over the years we now have accumulated
  40. 1:29over
  41. 1:304 000 uh individual members
  42. 1:33and affiliates as well as
  43. 1:36uh to almost 20 national or regional
  44. 1:40organizations of camps and so that
  45. 1:43reaches to that
  46. 1:44that many more camps uh and in all of
  47. 1:47those camps
  48. 1:48are tens of thousands of children and so
  49. 1:51our impact is truly global and certainly
  50. 1:54the camping impact is truly global
  51. 1:56and icf tries to embrace that
  52. 2:00and to build communication amongst
  53. 2:03the different countries thank you john
  54. 2:06and and you've uh segued in to to what
  55. 2:10my next question is
  56. 2:11so your impact globally is
  57. 2:14also through your meetings locally in
  58. 2:18destinations when you submitted
  59. 2:20your impact program it was connected to
  60. 2:24the nigeria
  61. 2:26event in 2019 could you just highlight
  62. 2:29um the main elements of that program
  63. 2:33and the impact you have attempted to
  64. 2:36leave behind
  65. 2:38in all across the world there are
  66. 2:41countries at different stages of
  67. 2:43development
  68. 2:44and are discovering camping
  69. 2:47as an important way to achieve a goal
  70. 2:51icf is is not really intended as a
  71. 2:54top-down organization so we don't direct
  72. 2:57what happens in the united states or
  73. 2:59canada or australia
  74. 3:01or japan or china all around the world
  75. 3:04instead what we tried to do is to foster
  76. 3:07that sense of community and so it was
  77. 3:11that
  78. 3:11in nigeria
  79. 3:14actually in in west africa nigeria was
  80. 3:17was opting to be the host for a
  81. 3:21gathering of
  82. 3:22camp professionals in i think seven
  83. 3:25different countries of west africa
  84. 3:27all of which are have just a the germ
  85. 3:31the the beginning of uh
  86. 3:34a desire to work with camping
  87. 3:37communities
  88. 3:38and and through camping to effect change
  89. 3:41in their youth uh and in ultimately in
  90. 3:44society
  91. 3:45so our idea then
  92. 3:48is as an international organization is
  93. 3:51to how can we fund this
  94. 3:52how can we support this kind of project
  95. 3:56and as you can imagine gathering people
  96. 3:59across
  97. 4:00west africa as well as bringing in
  98. 4:03external experts to assist was
  99. 4:06uh was challenging to be the best and so
  100. 4:10we were looking for opportunities to
  101. 4:13to build on that through the legacy fund
  102. 4:16of eca
  103. 4:18so and then 2020 happened and
  104. 4:22and your beijing conference didn't
  105. 4:24happen
  106. 4:25this had a two-fold effect
  107. 4:28on on your organization but also on
  108. 4:31on your global community worldwide and
  109. 4:34you did a
  110. 4:35campaign uh which is called thanks to
  111. 4:38camp
  112. 4:39which you ran this summer and there is a
  113. 4:41youtube link available now
  114. 4:43in the screen as well as in the chat for
  115. 4:46those who
  116. 4:47want to um see the video for me
  117. 4:50personally
  118. 4:51it was heartbreaking just because i got
  119. 4:53very emotional in seeing uh
  120. 4:55the effects this pandemic had
  121. 4:58on children globally and society would
  122. 5:01you be able to just share a little bit
  123. 5:03about the campaign itself
  124. 5:05certainly first of all the the beijing
  125. 5:09congress uh then is our major
  126. 5:13professional gathering event we do it
  127. 5:15once every three years
  128. 5:16in different parts of the world and so
  129. 5:19that has gone by the board and we
  130. 5:20weren't able to do that
  131. 5:22uh as a result of the pandemic and so we
  132. 5:25wanted to know what what
  133. 5:27could we do what should we do how can we
  134. 5:29support these
  135. 5:30large organizations and small
  136. 5:32organizations
  137. 5:33and and individual camps and individual
  138. 5:36families and so
  139. 5:39we developed this campaign called thanks
  140. 5:41to camp and
  141. 5:42thanks to camp has two meanings at least
  142. 5:44in english to
  143. 5:46to say that we can thank camp for
  144. 5:48something
  145. 5:49um but we can also uh use the term as
  146. 5:53because camp because i've had the camp
  147. 5:56experience i
  148. 5:57am changed in some way and so we invited
  149. 6:00campers and staff and directors to to
  150. 6:04send in pictures of themselves and make
  151. 6:06statements and to tell their story
  152. 6:08because what we want to do is to give
  153. 6:11camps
  154. 6:12a voice camps i think are a little
  155. 6:15misunderstood by the
  156. 6:17by the general population by government
  157. 6:19policy makers educators
  158. 6:22camp is often just seen as a place where
  159. 6:25children have fun
  160. 6:27but we think of camp as a place where
  161. 6:29children change
  162. 6:30where they become the best version of
  163. 6:32themselves and also that they learn
  164. 6:34tools that help them become the
  165. 6:38best version of themselves in society
  166. 6:41and so it is an important
  167. 6:44transition period for children and the
  168. 6:47camp experience is transformative
  169. 6:50so what we did was we gathered together
  170. 6:53videos and pictures and stories
  171. 6:55and put together the video that you saw
  172. 6:59of uh thanks to camp and
  173. 7:02uh it sets us up we hope that it is a
  174. 7:05wake-up call
  175. 7:06it it alerts educators and society in
  176. 7:09general
  177. 7:10of the value and values of camp and how
  178. 7:13important it is for children
  179. 7:15and for all of us and then we wanted
  180. 7:19we want to add to that research
  181. 7:22that demonstrates and we have this
  182. 7:24research already that demonstrates
  183. 7:27that children change at camp and
  184. 7:30so we have a second campaign that we
  185. 7:33want
  186. 7:33to reinforce called more than just fun
  187. 7:37where we are demonstrating that children
  188. 7:41become more
  189. 7:41self-aware that they become more
  190. 7:43compassionate
  191. 7:44that they become more aware of others
  192. 7:48that they connect with nature uh and
  193. 7:51that they learn to listen not just to
  194. 7:53the voices coming from outside but also
  195. 7:55the voice that's inside
  196. 7:57every child and that these
  197. 8:00are important growth uh
  198. 8:03experiences for children and this is
  199. 8:07so important because we really at the
  200. 8:10especially at this point when children
  201. 8:12are locked in their homes when they uh
  202. 8:15are have to home school and online
  203. 8:18school where they don't have those
  204. 8:19connections that they really
  205. 8:22find those voices um and be one with
  206. 8:25nature is so important
  207. 8:27so for everybody who wants to get in
  208. 8:28touch with you and find out more about
  209. 8:30all those campaigns
