  7. 0:16my family moved back to England where we
  8. 0:19were originally from
  9. 0:20lived there until I was about three or
  10. 0:22four years old came back to Europe in
  11. 0:25Summerville South Carolina
  12. 0:27graduated from Somerville high school
  13. 0:29after I graduated I was working as a dog
  14. 0:33groomer met my would be my husband we
  15. 0:37moved to Port Royal South Carolina he
  16. 0:40was in the Marine Corps stationed at
  17. 0:43Parris Island at the time we moved to
  18. 0:45Bluffton we had decided um I decided to
  19. 0:50pursue law enforcement always been a
  20. 0:52true crime nerd um into Mysteries things
  21. 0:55like that so I decided to pursue law
  22. 0:57enforcement
  23. 0:58um I graduated from the South Carolina

  30. 1:16eventually supervise the detective unit
  31. 1:18at Bluffton PD
  32. 1:20uh my husband and I decided we wanted a
  33. 1:22lot of kids so after I had my third
  34. 1:27um civilian job
  35. 1:28um get out of law enforcement for a
  36. 1:30little bit
  37. 1:31um with a better schedule
  38. 1:32so I briefly worked on Paris Island as a
  39. 1:35sexual assault victim especially
  40. 1:37investigations I first tried Beaufort
  41. 1:40police department but it would take
  42. 1:42several years for them to have an
  43. 1:43opening in criminal investigations so
  44. 1:46then I came to the Colleton county in
  45. 1:47September of 2020 and February 2021 I
  46. 1:51was transferred to the criminal
  47. 1:53investigation division where I currently
  48. 1:55am now
  49. 1:56I my main focus is child crimes which
  50. 2:00means children of sexual and physical
  51. 2:02abuse
  52. 2:04um those are the cases that I
  53. 2:05predominantly work as well I'm a South
  54. 2:07Carolina Ike Task Force member and what
  55. 2:11that means is it's uh internet crimes
  56. 2:13against children and that's a task force
  57. 2:15that's partnership with the General's
  58. 2:17office and we basically battle online
  59. 2:19child Predators child pornography those
  60. 2:22types of cases
  61. 2:23we do rotate homicides in the detective
  62. 2:27division among nine of us
  63. 2:30at some point did you work at Paris
  64. 2:32Island I did yes sir tell these folks
  65. 2:34what you did there I was a sexual victim
  66. 2:36advocate for civilians on the base
  67. 2:39and your training's hosted by other law
  68. 2:43enforcement agencies state and federal
  69. 2:46how many children do you have now we
  70. 2:48have four okay
  71. 2:49okay and uh does your husband work he
  72. 2:51does do you work at home he does
  73. 2:54he started full-time with Collington at
  74. 2:58one year 2020. okay and what was your
  75. 3:00role when you first started with
  76. 3:01Colleton County Sheriff's Department um
  77. 3:03I started on patrol to familiarize
  78. 3:05myself with the county
  79. 3:07and then did you work yourself or not or
  80. 3:10go but you become a detective I did it
  81. 3:12okay when was that February 2021
  82. 3:18on June 7th of 2021
  83. 3:21well let me ask the party get that where
  84. 3:23do you not to pry I don't want the world
  85. 3:25to know but they're going to where do
  86. 3:27you live I live in Ridgeland
  87. 3:29now on June 7th of 2021 was a small call
  88. 3:32I was okay how far is it from Ridgeland
  89. 3:37uh
  90. 3:38to here
  91. 3:3945 minutes to an hour depending on
  92. 3:43traffic and what part of Colleton County
  93. 3:45I'm going to did you receive a 4147
  94. 3:48Moselle Road
  95. 3:50but due to my Longhorn for the property
  96. 3:52and who were you coordinating with
  97. 3:54during that I mean who was your boss
  98. 3:56that's Captain Jason
  99. 3:59and after you'd received the call did
  100. 4:01you confer with Captain Chapman and a
  101. 4:04result of as a result of that what did
  102. 4:06you do
  103. 4:07your search warrant for the property
  104. 4:09okay and for 4147 Mazel yes sir what did
  105. 4:14you do after you got the search warrant
  106. 4:15I notified everybody over the road that
  107. 4:18I did I have a search warrant so
  108. 4:21solid crime scene unit was waiting on me
  109. 4:23um and it was still going to take some
  110. 4:24time to get out there
  111. 4:26and then I made my way to 4147 Moselle
  112. 4:29road with the warrant had she been out
  113. 4:31there before to 41-47 Mazel never
  114. 4:36when you went out there did you know
  115. 4:38what your role was going to be as you
  116. 4:40were going out there I did not
  117. 4:42when you got to the central
  118. 4:45um sled agents as well as college and
  119. 4:46County deputies
  120. 4:48um at the scene I was basically the last
  121. 4:49one there
  122. 4:51um and I met with my supervisor Captain
  123. 4:54Jason Chapman and presented them with
  124. 4:57the search warrant as well um
  125. 4:59he asked me if I knew the Murdoch family
  126. 5:03to which I replied I did not
  127. 5:06they then asked me if I was familiar
  128. 5:08with a boat accident that happened in
  129. 5:10Beaufort and my reply was I've heard of
  130. 5:14it but I don't know the details
  131. 5:16so with that information they said okay
  132. 5:18you're going to be assigned as the
  133. 5:20liaison with the Leeds case who was
  134. 5:23identified as senior special agent David
  135. 5:24Owen and that my task was going to be to
  136. 5:27assist him with anything he may need
  137. 5:29that that evening at the scene and
  138. 5:31throughout the investigation and I think
  139. 5:34we've heard a prior testimony but the
  140. 5:36case was going to be the lead Agency on
  141. 5:38the case and did you know special agent
  142. 5:41David Owens prior for that night I did
  143. 5:43not but she did you get to know him and
  144. 5:45actually get to work with himself I did
  145. 5:47yes sir
  146. 5:48and let's start out with that job when
  147. 5:51you first got so
  148. 5:53um the first thing as I approached the
  149. 5:55I'm sure you've all heard the kennels um
  150. 5:58was the overwhelming feat inside the
  151. 6:00plane of the door
  152. 6:02there was uh there was brain blood hair
  153. 6:05skull matter all within the feed room
  154. 6:08and the ceiling
  155. 6:10uh there was a deceased female
  156. 6:14approximately 30 feet across from where
  157. 6:18his body was and she was covered as well
  158. 6:22but um I had been told that they both
  159. 6:24had gunshot wounds to their heads
  160. 6:28Mr Alec Myrtle
  161. 6:30now did you know
  162. 6:33if I was referring to us Paul and Maggie
  163. 6:35did you know Paul Bernal and or Maggie
  164. 6:37Murdoch I did not lay in bed on the
  165. 6:39ground no
  166. 6:41uh Mr Murdoch Alec um standing at the
  167. 6:45back of the
  168. 6:47there was his
  169. 6:49um suburban and then there was um I
  170. 6:51believe his brother Randy had arrived at
  171. 6:53this and they were standing behind
  172. 6:54Randy's truck oh so they couldn't see
  173. 6:56the scene anymore so we approached him
  174. 6:59and asked if he would speak with us he
  175. 7:02introduced the man standing next to him
  176. 7:04as his personal attorney
  177. 7:05Danny Henderson and he agreed to speak
  178. 7:08with us by this point it started to rain
  179. 7:11so we utilized agent Owen's vehicle to
  180. 7:16do the interview
  181. 7:17to that that had you made any other
  182. 7:19observations about bullet holes or shell
  183. 7:21cases area and front and to the left on
  184. 7:24the ground in between there was like a
  185. 7:26gravel area in between the two buildings
  186. 7:29had you seen what's been referred to as
  187. 7:31the feed room and yes okay what did you
  188. 7:34observe in there inside the feed room I
  189. 7:37did observe body matter that had been on
  190. 7:40the ceiling as well as covered in items
  191. 7:43inside the feed room there was a shot
  192. 7:46concrete
  193. 7:47did you see me hold the room that had
  194. 7:50several holes in it
  195. 7:53I'll go skip
  196. 7:55I want to skip the statement for a
  197. 7:57second all right
  198. 7:58after you took the statement out we're
  199. 8:00going to get into that
  200. 8:01did you go back and
  201. 8:03um
  202. 8:05look at the scene with either Captain
  203. 8:07Chapman I say that she seen the shelters
  204. 8:10the dog kennel to tell the ladies and
  205. 8:12gentlemen first of all why do you did
  206. 8:13that and what were your observations
  207. 8:14please man well it was such a large
  208. 8:16scene
  209. 8:18um I decided to Canvas the outer part of
  210. 8:21the scene and while I was doing that
  211. 8:23keep in mind it was it was late at night
  212. 8:25it was dark so we had flashlights so
  213. 8:27while I was doing that
  214. 8:29um I noted some
  215. 8:31what appeared to me to be fresh shoe
  216. 8:34impressions in a Sandy part of the shed
  217. 8:37on the left side some tractors in the
  218. 8:40wall of the shed there was several fresh
  219. 8:43shoe Impressions and when you say fresh
  220. 8:47shoe impression kind of obviously what
  221. 8:49does that mean it had been left fairly
  222. 8:52recently what did they appear to you to
  223. 8:54be they look like a flat sandal
  224. 8:57flip-flop type shoe
  225. 8:59not particularly large in size is that
  226. 9:02were they one set of
  227. 9:04Footprints or two based on your
  228. 9:06observation it was one set of prints
  229. 9:09that looked like it went down One
  230. 9:10Direction and possibly came back
  231. 9:13no doubt about that in your mind no
  232. 9:15doubt about it so if you watch me know
  233. 9:16what was it like
  234. 9:18one set of prints going this way yes
  235. 9:22and then it looked like one set of
  236. 9:25prints coming back this way yes because
  237. 9:26they did overlap each other a little bit
  238. 9:29with you when you were looking at this I
  239. 9:31was by myself initially and then I found
  240. 9:34my supervisor Captain Chapman and and
  241. 9:36showed him what I had found
  242. 9:38thank you
  243. 9:40where we all walk walking when you were
  244. 9:42looking at the prince
  245. 9:44we've made the decision at that point
  246. 9:45due to the type of incident that it was
  247. 9:48and we didn't really know what we had
  248. 9:49yet to follow the footprints and see if
  249. 9:52there was any additional evidence and
  250. 9:54find out where that person may have been
  251. 9:55trying to go so what we did is we say to
  252. 9:58the left side of the shoe prints closest
  253. 10:00to the tractors and and followed the the
  254. 10:03prints down
  255. 10:04noted that they stopped at the end of
  256. 10:06the building turned around and came back
  257. 10:10and I'm going to show you what's entered
  258. 10:12the state's 194.
  259. 10:16you're just referring to
  260. 10:20what does this depict
  261. 10:22that depicts um several what appear to
  262. 10:25be boot prints on as well
  263. 10:28is this the same path y'all yes okay

  539. 27:06and FBI undercover team observed him

  545. 27:26you know
  546. 27:29is probably the person but
  547. 27:32that's just so crazy
  548. 27:34yeah that's the kind of part of that
  549. 27:36story off today he took his daddy to the

  590. 31:17I don't know direct threats between any
  591. 31:21any of the people on the boat
  592. 31:22specifically but I do think there's
  593. 31:25gonna
  594. 31:26a small amount of yet between a couple
  595. 31:29of them but not recently because
  596. 31:32most of this is stuff when people that
  597. 31:35Paul didn't really know okay
  598. 31:38there were some people that he knew
  599. 31:40distantly but
  600. 31:43more times than not when I learned about
  601. 31:45it
  602. 31:49um it's like for example he went out in
  603. 31:50Charleston a couple months ago came out
  604. 31:52you said you know he was always a real
  605. 31:55tough man's man you know he would just
  606. 32:02he would defend himself but he hadn't

  609. 32:11as far as what

  611. 32:16way he has handled the pressures to be
  612. 32:19in that situation I think I've told
  613. 32:22Danny that before
  614. 32:30I mean Paul is a wonderful wonderful
  615. 32:33wonderful kid
  616. 32:36can do almost anything he gets along
  617. 32:38with almost anybody
  618. 32:44do you also any weapons out here
  619. 32:46um we don't store them but they're
  620. 32:50you know they're frequently out here I
  621. 32:53need to find out if there were any out
  622. 32:54here because
  623. 32:56um
  624. 32:57I'll have to find out exactly when that
  625. 33:00was
  626. 33:02thinking got put up
  627. 33:04but I'm not positive well that's not
  628. 33:06gonna look like
  629. 33:08uh it was uh
  630. 33:11camouflage
  631. 33:14um

  663. 35:2745 minutes to an island on Maggie had
  664. 35:30things she did in Charleston and
  665. 35:35um she had a doctor's appointment in

1031. 1:01:54that we saw in this video
1032. 1:01:57in this courtroom and as the individual
1033. 1:01:59you described as 20 mount for the jury
1034. 1:02:03he's sitting at the defense table
  1035. 1:02:04wearing a grayish brown jacket and a

  1045. 1:03:07until a recess takes place
  1046. 1:03:10of being recessed for 10 minutes
  1047. 1:12:34okay
  1048. 1:12:59foreign
  1049. 1:13:11thank you
  1050. 1:13:31[Music]
1051. 1:13:45rule 20 of the rules of criminal
  1052. 1:13:47procedure provides that
1053. 1:13:50uh there shall be no objection no
1054. 1:13:54argument on objections unless requested
  1055. 1:13:57poet
  1056. 1:14:00from 19
  1057. 1:14:0519. rule I'm sorry rule 18.
  1058. 1:14:10no argument 18b
  1059. 1:14:15then rule uh 43
  1060. 1:14:20h
1061. 1:14:21of the rules of civil procedure which is
1062. 1:14:24applied to the rules of criminal
  1063. 1:14:26procedure
  1064. 1:14:28through criminal procedure rule 37 I
  1065. 1:14:32believe it is 37 yes
  1066. 1:14:35and that is that
1067. 1:14:39only one council is examined a witness
1068. 1:14:43State the examining Council only shall
  1069. 1:14:47make objections
1070. 1:14:49as Mr Griffin is examining going to
  1071. 1:14:53cross-examine Mr Griffin makes
  1072. 1:14:55objections likewise
  1073. 1:14:57with the state's attorney general not
1074. 1:14:59any and everyone can jump up and object
  1075. 1:15:03and argue
1076. 1:15:04any questions about either of those
  1077. 1:15:06rules
1078. 1:15:14having to get to testify by Blood In The
  1079. 1:15:16Water yesterday I objected and it was a
  1080. 1:15:18speaking of Jack Johnson
  1081. 1:15:19but when I object
1082. 1:15:23will you and sometimes invite argument
  1083. 1:15:25or
1084. 1:15:27I'm trying to preserve sometimes invite
  1085. 1:15:30argument
  1086. 1:15:31I'm trying to preserve
  1087. 1:15:34objections in the record
1088. 1:15:37um and I'm just wondering and since he
1089. 1:15:40doesn't get an appeal that's not his
  1090. 1:15:41concern
1091. 1:15:43um how would you like me to handle that
1092. 1:15:46well the objection speaks for itself
1093. 1:15:49uh if the parties wish to place
1094. 1:15:51something a record at some point in time
  1095. 1:15:53after a Witnesses is is
1096. 1:15:57death examination is over the court will
  1097. 1:15:59give you that opportunity
1098. 1:16:01but if we have speaking objections if
1099. 1:16:06the if one party makes an objection and
1100. 1:16:08proceeds to argue it through a speaking
1101. 1:16:12objection I give equal time to opposings
1102. 1:16:15so we end up having a debate rather than
1103. 1:16:17that interrupts the trials and all of
  1104. 1:16:20that I certainly understand
  1105. 1:16:22[Music]
  1106. 1:16:24the defense's right to make a proper
1107. 1:16:26record and we'll address that as it as
1108. 1:16:30is needed without there being a speaking
  1109. 1:16:32objection
  1110. 1:16:32for instance they've listed hearsay in
  1111. 1:16:35my opinion okay
1112. 1:16:37should I say objection hearsay or just
1113. 1:16:40yes sir I can do that yes the legal
1114. 1:16:43basis for the objection okay
1115. 1:16:45not not a real advocacy yes sir okay I
1116. 1:16:48understand thank you all right
  1117. 1:16:52bring the jury
  1118. 1:17:36thank you
  1119. 1:18:07foreign
  1120. 1:18:16thank you cross-examination Mr Griffin
  1121. 1:18:27protective cross good morning
1122. 1:18:30my name is Jim Griffin Jim Rutland
  1123. 1:18:33Rutland I'm sorry that's okay
1124. 1:18:36uh my name is Jim Griffin and I
  1125. 1:18:38represent Alex Murdock
1126. 1:18:41you had testified on Direct exemption a
  1127. 1:18:43moment ago that
1128. 1:18:46that it was you believe somewhat unusual
1129. 1:18:49for Mr Murdoch to go visit his mother as
  1130. 1:18:53late as uh
  1131. 1:18:55906 on a Monday evening you're called
  1132. 1:18:59testifying I I do and and you were
1133. 1:19:02sitting in the car when he was being
1134. 1:19:03interviewed and and you recall him
  1135. 1:19:06saying that his father
1136. 1:19:10had just been put in the hospital that
1137. 1:19:13very day that's correct and that it was
  1138. 1:19:16an unusual day
  1139. 1:19:17because Mr Randolph
1140. 1:19:20Murdoch was not with Miss Libby read and
1141. 1:19:24she gets anxious when that occurs you
  1142. 1:19:26remember that I remember him saying
1143. 1:19:28something along those lines and in in
  1144. 1:19:31that context it's
  1145. 1:19:33you don't criticize a son who goes to
1146. 1:19:36visit his mother who has early onset
  1147. 1:19:40dementia
1148. 1:19:42on the very day in the afternoon that
1149. 1:19:45the father is admitted to the hospital
1150. 1:19:47you're not here to criticize him for
  1151. 1:19:49that aren't you no I didn't criticize I
1152. 1:19:51just made a mental note that that was
  1153. 1:19:52interesting
  1154. 1:19:54and and you uh
1155. 1:20:00you walk the crime scene when you
1156. 1:20:03arrived and you made some mental notes
1157. 1:20:07and observations that you subsequently
1158. 1:20:08recorded in a report did you not I did
1159. 1:20:12and one of the things that you mentally
1160. 1:20:14noted and then subsequently reported was
  1161. 1:20:17that a tremendous amount of blood
  1162. 1:20:21spatter
1163. 1:20:22in the feed room area and around where
1164. 1:20:25Paul was murdered is that correct that's
1165. 1:20:27correct and there was brain matter
1166. 1:20:30normal matter all about the
  1167. 1:20:33place where
  1168. 1:20:34Paul was murdered correct that's correct
1169. 1:20:37and and I think you even described that
  1170. 1:20:40there was uh matter
1171. 1:20:42that blood that went up to the ceiling
1172. 1:20:44and through the door and
  1173. 1:20:47spider everywhere right that's correct
  1174. 1:20:50and you also
1175. 1:20:52told the jury that Alec was clean
  1176. 1:20:55and you're referring to
1177. 1:20:57his shirt was clean correct correct his
1178. 1:21:01shorts were correct you remember the
1179. 1:21:02Litany of Mr matters shorts shirts shoes
1180. 1:21:05were clean correct that's correct he was
  1181. 1:21:08clean correct
1182. 1:21:09to my visual eye he was clean yes if
1183. 1:21:12your visual eye it did not look like he
1184. 1:21:15had just blown his son's head off in the
1185. 1:21:18confines of a feed room were splatters
  1186. 1:21:20everywhere
  1187. 1:21:21isn't that correct I didn't say that
1188. 1:21:24well let me ask you in your mind's eye
1189. 1:21:26that night on June 7th did he look like
1190. 1:21:29someone had just blown his sons had a
  1191. 1:21:31spatter going everywhere
  1192. 1:21:33again I I can't say that for sure a lot
1193. 1:21:36of a lot of things would come into play
  1194. 1:21:38to affect that distance
  1195. 1:21:41is one of them

  1202. 1:21:57was just assisting
1203. 1:21:59well one one of the things you did that
1204. 1:22:01evening with Rutland was you obtained a
1205. 1:22:03search warrant did you not I did and
1206. 1:22:05that was your first official Duty in
  1207. 1:22:08connection with this
  1208. 1:22:11double homicide investigation that's
  1209. 1:22:12correct
1210. 1:22:13and I'm gonna show you exhibit three
1211. 1:22:15your honor I've shared it with Mr
1212. 1:22:17Meadows during the break and asked the
  1213. 1:22:20witness to identify it
1214. 1:22:23you recognize your pivot three I do this
1215. 1:22:25is the search warrant I got that night
1216. 1:22:28John would move exhibit three in the
  1217. 1:22:31evidence this time I believe without
  1218. 1:22:32objection
  1219. 1:22:37I have it
  1220. 1:22:40so Terry please Bob
  1221. 1:22:42exhibit three is
  1222. 1:22:45we'll we'll first
1223. 1:22:47let's just talk about a search warrant
  1224. 1:22:49what is a search warrant
1225. 1:22:50it grants us the right to to search a
1226. 1:22:54certain item that may have been
  1227. 1:22:55incentive case
1228. 1:22:57and and this search warrant was for what
  1229. 1:23:00property
1230. 1:23:014147 Moselle Road in Arlington County
1231. 1:23:04Colleton state of South Carolina
1232. 1:23:07and it covers the old roughly 1700 acres
1233. 1:23:11for the whole property doesn't up that
1234. 1:23:13is correct and it covers the house
  1235. 1:23:17the the residents where
1236. 1:23:19you went into the foyer right correct
1237. 1:23:22it covers all the outbuildings correct
1238. 1:23:25correct yes and it gives you the right
  1239. 1:23:28to seize
1240. 1:23:31um any type of evidence correct that is
1241. 1:23:34correct let me see if I can get Mr Elmo
1242. 1:23:37to work can you turn it on please
1243. 1:23:51I've got to turn sidewindies
  1244. 1:23:54all right
1245. 1:23:56let's see if we could read that done
  1246. 1:24:01was there lightning
1247. 1:24:05much better and can we zoom in all right
  1248. 1:24:08okay got it
  1249. 1:24:11so
1250. 1:24:12and this is the search warrant right yes
1251. 1:24:15it is and it says description of
  1252. 1:24:17premises
  1253. 1:24:18uh to be searched and here it's 3147
  1254. 1:24:22Moselle Road Island
  1255. 1:24:24and then there's a PIN number what's the
  1256. 1:24:26PIN number it's a property
  1257. 1:24:27identification number that's assigned to
1258. 1:24:29every Parcels of real property within
1259. 1:24:31the county it's set by the tax office
1260. 1:24:35it says the property to be searched or
1261. 1:24:37any residences Vehicles out buildings
1262. 1:24:41kennels or sheds right that is correct
1263. 1:24:44and then it says uh the description of
  1264. 1:24:47the property
1265. 1:24:49to uh to search into NBCS and that's
1266. 1:24:54under description of property right
1267. 1:24:55correct and you prepared this document
  1268. 1:24:58for the magistrate I did
  1269. 1:25:01and here
1270. 1:25:03says evidence that may be used or taken
1271. 1:25:06during the commission of a crime of
1272. 1:25:07homicide to include but not limited any
1273. 1:25:09item two clothing gloves masks hats
1274. 1:25:13hoodies shoes boots jewelry Firearms
  1275. 1:25:16ammunitions shell casings gunshot
  1276. 1:25:18residue weapons identification documents
  1277. 1:25:21any paperwork Etc
  1278. 1:25:24um
1279. 1:25:25it says any evidence inside vehicles on
1280. 1:25:28the property any evidence found on in
1281. 1:25:31outbuildings or sheds any Tire shoe
1282. 1:25:34Impressions any and all DNA to include
1283. 1:25:36but not limited to fingerprints
1284. 1:25:39Etc any drugs narcotics drugs
1285. 1:25:42paraphernalia any and all cellular
1286. 1:25:45phones phone records to include incoming
1287. 1:25:47outcoming calls text messages voice
  1288. 1:25:49messages
1289. 1:25:50Etc and goes on to talk about
  1290. 1:25:52photographs and whatnot
1291. 1:25:54it's all encompassing isn't it it is and
1292. 1:25:57this is basically as broad as a search
  1293. 1:25:59warrant that you draft because it's a
1294. 1:26:01homicide investigation and it gives you
1295. 1:26:04cart launch on the property of the crime
1296. 1:26:07scene right that's correct and with the
1297. 1:26:09search warrant you have the authority to
1298. 1:26:11go in the house and look for unclean
1299. 1:26:14dirty clothes did you not that was I
1300. 1:26:17wasn't in that capacity that evening I
1301. 1:26:19would well the search warrant provided
1302. 1:26:21that authority to law enforcement did
1303. 1:26:23not it would have yes and you mentioned
  1304. 1:26:26that
1305. 1:26:27you got into the law enforcement
  1306. 1:26:29business because you're
1307. 1:26:31CSI TV Junkie up source
1308. 1:26:35did I understand you say that yeah I was
1309. 1:26:37okay and and you've seen CSI shows where
1310. 1:26:41they go and they they look in the drains
1311. 1:26:44of showers or sinks and to see if blood
1312. 1:26:48residue had been recently flushed
1313. 1:26:50through there that's possible is it not
1314. 1:26:53it could be and that's just not on TV I
  1315. 1:26:56mean that's that's skills that sleds
  1316. 1:27:00um grounding
1317. 1:27:02has available to them correct
1318. 1:27:05I don't know what they have available
1319. 1:27:06but that would be a crime scene unit
  1320. 1:27:08question
  1321. 1:27:09the um
1322. 1:27:13and and actually there were
  1323. 1:27:16the
  1324. 1:27:18the cleaning clothes
1325. 1:27:20that Alec Murdock was wearing that night
1326. 1:27:22they were seeds were they not yes okay
1327. 1:27:25and the clean shoes were yes and the
  1328. 1:27:29clean
1329. 1:27:30shirt with cease was it not yes it was
  1330. 1:27:33okay
1331. 1:27:34and but that you were in the house when
1332. 1:27:36that happened but you didn't collect the
  1333. 1:27:40collecting the foyer
1334. 1:27:42and who did the collection do you recall
  1335. 1:27:45special agent Owen
1336. 1:27:47and well was he assisted by anybody I
  1337. 1:27:51was just standing by
1338. 1:27:53they went to a back bedroom and I was in
1339. 1:27:55the foyer area it was like an open floor
  1340. 1:27:56plan
1341. 1:27:59and and would you recall how
1342. 1:28:05you recall what Mr Owen detective of one
1343. 1:28:08special agent Owen Apollo Jones
  1344. 1:28:11yeah
1345. 1:28:12you know a special agent over did uh You
1346. 1:28:15observe what he collected to close in I
  1347. 1:28:18did not
1348. 1:28:20you collect all the clothes and put them
  1349. 1:28:22in one paper bag
  1350. 1:28:24I don't recall
  1351. 1:28:35now
1352. 1:28:37the jury heard the complete
1353. 1:28:41video audio of the interview with Alec
  1354. 1:28:44Merlot on the evening
1355. 1:28:47the early morning hours of June the 8th
1356. 1:28:51and yet you were asked to
  1357. 1:28:53um
1358. 1:28:54repeat some of the things that he said
  1359. 1:28:57and and I want to
1360. 1:29:00I mean the tape speaks for itself I
1361. 1:29:02don't want anyone to misconstrue your
1362. 1:29:04testimony so I just want to ask you
1363. 1:29:08are you saying that Mr Murdoch tried to
1364. 1:29:11turn his son over two times on that tape
1365. 1:29:13or that on two occasions he described
1366. 1:29:17one incident that he tried to turn his
1367. 1:29:19son over the latter that he explained
1368. 1:29:22twice two different times so
1369. 1:29:25so in answer to your questions
  1370. 1:29:27if anyone would
1371. 1:29:30have walked away thinking that that Alan
1372. 1:29:33Murdoch told you that he tried to turn
1373. 1:29:35him over two times that would just be I
  1374. 1:29:37mean anything we've now clarified it
  1375. 1:29:39right correct
  1376. 1:29:42now
  1377. 1:29:43you never asked
1378. 1:29:46or special agent Owen never asked Mr
  1379. 1:29:49Murdock
1380. 1:29:50how he tried to turn his son over
  1381. 1:29:53correct
  1382. 1:29:55and and so
1383. 1:29:58you see Mr Meadows crawling around on
1384. 1:30:00the floor down here as trying to reenact
  1385. 1:30:02something but
1386. 1:30:05that night he never was asked
1387. 1:30:08specifically what did you do to try to
1388. 1:30:11turn your son over correct
1389. 1:30:13that's correct we did not ask that
1390. 1:30:16and that night he was not asked
  1391. 1:30:18specifically
1392. 1:30:20how the phone popped out of his pocket
1393. 1:30:22while you were trying to turn him over
1394. 1:30:24correct correct and that night he was
1395. 1:30:26not asked specifically how far were you
  1396. 1:30:29able to move
1397. 1:30:32um Paul if at all when you tried to flip
  1398. 1:30:35him over correct correct
1399. 1:30:39and then FL in fact
1400. 1:30:41did he really even say that I was trying
1401. 1:30:44to flip him over to check his pulse
1402. 1:30:47I'd have to check the transcript but I I
1403. 1:30:49believe he said something along those
  1404. 1:30:50lines
1405. 1:30:51what did he tell you where he tried to
  1406. 1:30:54check Paul's pulse he did not
1407. 1:30:59so we don't know from your interview or
  1408. 1:31:03special agent Owen's interview
1409. 1:31:06how he tried to turn him over how the
1410. 1:31:09phone popped down at least how Alex
  1411. 1:31:11describes it
1412. 1:31:12and where on Paul's body he attempted to
1413. 1:31:16check his paws right correct
  1414. 1:31:24foreign
1415. 1:31:35and you were asked questions about
1416. 1:31:39whether there was knee prints and
  1417. 1:31:41footprints
  1418. 1:31:42by Paul's body
1419. 1:31:45next to his body right yes I was asked
1420. 1:31:49that and did you do such a
1421. 1:31:52forensic analysis investigation to see
1422. 1:31:56if there are boot prints or footprints
  1423. 1:31:57around
1424. 1:31:58I looked with my eyes
1425. 1:32:01and were you aware that before you got
1426. 1:32:03there well let me what time did you get
  1427. 1:32:05there
1428. 1:32:12I'll take this down I threw Mr Elma
  1429. 1:32:2712 22 a.m I was on scene okay 12 22 A.M
  1430. 1:32:31and
1431. 1:32:33and Paul's body and Maggie bodies were
1432. 1:32:37covered up with a sheep but still
  1433. 1:32:40present correct correct
  1434. 1:32:44so
  1435. 1:32:46when you
  1436. 1:32:48were looking at Paul's body
1437. 1:32:51just observing whether their Footprints
  1438. 1:32:53near him
1439. 1:32:54you couldn't see right next to his body
1440. 1:32:56because of the sheep could you the sheet
1441. 1:32:58was mostly on his body not on the cement
1442. 1:33:01on the ground next to the body
  1443. 1:33:04was it a fitted sheet no but it wasn't a
  1444. 1:33:07queen sheet either
  1445. 1:33:09okay then
1446. 1:33:10Jury has seen photos of the sheet
  1447. 1:33:14um were you aware
  1448. 1:33:16that
  1449. 1:33:20captain
  1450. 1:33:22Chapman
1451. 1:33:24and others went around Paul's body and
  1452. 1:33:27lifted the sheet up
1453. 1:33:28to see if there was a gun Underneath Him
1454. 1:33:32not us at the scene no
1455. 1:33:34well I take it you did not observe their
1456. 1:33:36Footprints anywhere in the area either
  1457. 1:33:38then right
  1458. 1:33:39not that I recall
1459. 1:33:46and you said that uh
1460. 1:33:48Alex pants were clean remember saying
1461. 1:33:51that I remember saying that what color
1462. 1:33:52pants did he have on
  1463. 1:33:54khaki
1464. 1:33:57and are you aware of any forensic
1465. 1:34:00testing that had been done to the pants
1466. 1:34:01to see whether there was
  1467. 1:34:03blood
  1468. 1:34:05on the panels right
1469. 1:34:08subsequently no there was nothing down
1470. 1:34:10there exactly that night nothing was
  1471. 1:34:12done forensically not before I
  1472. 1:34:14interviewed him no what
1473. 1:34:17you just did not observe any blood on
1474. 1:34:19his pants or in his pocket no just
1475. 1:34:22simply speaking with him like this
1476. 1:34:24looking him up and down I did not see
  1477. 1:34:26any blood on him
1478. 1:34:31and he didn't look like someone who had
  1479. 1:34:33just
  1480. 1:34:35been within feet of
  1481. 1:34:38blowing Paul's head off right
  1482. 1:34:41again I can't say that there's so many
1483. 1:34:42different factors that you would have to
  1484. 1:34:44take into account
  1485. 1:34:47now
  1486. 1:34:59you get a lot more I believe
1487. 1:35:04that night after you left
  1488. 1:35:07well let's go back
1489. 1:35:10when you got to the scene you partnered
  1490. 1:35:13up with
1491. 1:35:15how you doing correct that's correct and
  1492. 1:35:19um
1493. 1:35:19and and you saw inside the shed and you
1494. 1:35:23observed there was wadding on the floor
1495. 1:35:26near his feet Paul's feet correct and we
1496. 1:35:29say wadding what are you talking about
  1497. 1:35:31the internal components of a shotgun
  1498. 1:35:33shell
1499. 1:35:36and then you saw in the rear window of
1500. 1:35:38the shed there were several holes right
  1501. 1:35:39that's correct
1502. 1:35:42and you describing your report that you
1503. 1:35:45saw large amounts of blood spatter and
1504. 1:35:48brain skull matter were on the door to
1505. 1:35:49the shed on the items within the storage
  1506. 1:35:51building
  1507. 1:35:52saw that right that's correct
1508. 1:35:58and then you you went and examined
  1509. 1:36:02Maggie
  1510. 1:36:04's body did you
  1511. 1:36:07I wouldn't say examined I would just say
  1512. 1:36:09I I looked at her
1513. 1:36:11and one of the things that you notice
  1514. 1:36:13when you were
  1515. 1:36:16looking at
  1516. 1:36:20Maggie's body
  1517. 1:36:22I believe
1518. 1:36:26you said you notice there are a few
1519. 1:36:28clumps of her hair and a broken earring
  1520. 1:36:30we're located near a
1521. 1:36:32UTV Tire right that is correct tv Tire
  1522. 1:36:38I'm sorry
1523. 1:36:39what do you mean by UTV uh alternate
  1524. 1:36:42all-terrain vehicle it's like a
  1525. 1:36:43four-wheeler side by side
  1526. 1:36:56foreign
1527. 1:37:00and we talked you talked about these
1528. 1:37:02foot Impressions that that you observed
  1529. 1:37:04right I did
  1530. 1:37:07um

1548. 1:38:22that the boot prints were not yours in
1549. 1:38:25these photos right that is correct
1550. 1:38:28but now you told the jury that the
  1551. 1:38:30blueprints are here it's incorrect those
1552. 1:38:32are not my boot prints
  1553. 1:38:36whose blueprints are they I don't know
1554. 1:38:39oh okay that's why I get to do this so
  1555. 1:38:42objections
  1556. 1:38:45so
1557. 1:38:48you don't know who the boot Prince those
  1558. 1:38:49are
  1559. 1:38:50no
  1560. 1:38:53all right
  1561. 1:39:01foreign
1562. 1:39:19now one thing about this search warrant
  1563. 1:39:21that I asked you about earlier
  1564. 1:39:24it was
  1565. 1:39:26do you have it up I I couldn't remember
  1566. 1:39:28if I gave it back to you or not I don't
  1567. 1:39:30think you did that's okay
  1568. 1:39:31um
1569. 1:39:32it was never executed was it
  1570. 1:39:40um
1571. 1:39:40I handed this off to sled agents once I
1572. 1:39:44was at the scene thank you
1573. 1:39:49Sergeant off the flood agent I did okay
1574. 1:39:53but to your knowledge was it ever
  1575. 1:39:55executed
1576. 1:39:56yes it was oh you think it was executed
1577. 1:40:01and why do you say that because the sled
1578. 1:40:03crime scene unit I was present while
1579. 1:40:05they were processing the scene and
1580. 1:40:07executing the work and so there are two
  1581. 1:40:09ways that law enforcement
1582. 1:40:11can get access to property one and ones
1583. 1:40:14by consent is that right that's correct
1584. 1:40:17are you aware that Mr Murdock gave sled
  1585. 1:40:21Colleton County
  1586. 1:40:23anti-law enforcement FBI
1587. 1:40:27carte blanche consent to search his
  1588. 1:40:29property
1589. 1:40:31that wasn't relayed to me I was asked to
  1590. 1:40:34tasked for being a search warrant so I
1591. 1:40:35did okay and once as coach Warren has
  1592. 1:40:38executed
1593. 1:40:39a return is filed with the manager who
1594. 1:40:42issued it right that's correct and you
1595. 1:40:44you never filed return on that search
  1596. 1:40:47warrant right
  1597. 1:40:51do you have
1598. 1:40:52um like I said it was given to sled so
1599. 1:40:56we'll find out more about that
  1600. 1:40:58I mean you didn't file a return that's
1601. 1:41:00all you could say right
1602. 1:41:03I don't recall I have to check my notes
  1603. 1:41:07um
1604. 1:41:08you heard on uh the tape you heard Mr
  1605. 1:41:11Murdock say
  1606. 1:41:13you can uh
1607. 1:41:15you can do anything look for anything
  1608. 1:41:17you remember him just
1609. 1:41:19giving consent to whatever you need
1610. 1:41:22as far as speaking with him yes I
1611. 1:41:24remember him saying that yeah
  1612. 1:41:27and
1613. 1:41:29and so and you walked back through the
1614. 1:41:32crime scene one last time before you
1615. 1:41:35cleared the area on the morning of the
  1616. 1:41:37eighth is that right
1617. 1:41:40you could say that we were and we were
1618. 1:41:43walking around the whole night and
1619. 1:41:44staying out of the way of the crime
  1620. 1:41:46scene unit
1621. 1:41:47was it was it were you there left no I
1622. 1:41:50was not they were still processing when
  1623. 1:41:52I left
1624. 1:41:57do you know whether or not the um
  1625. 1:42:00crime scene unit left
  1626. 1:42:02shotgun pellets
1627. 1:42:05behind at the in the feed room I have no
1628. 1:42:07knowledge of any of that
1629. 1:42:1020 30. even more shotgun pellets Left
  1630. 1:42:13Behind fever sustained

  1643. 1:43:01know found a location

1652. 1:43:28the download of his cell phone correct
1653. 1:43:30that's correct and gave consent right he
1654. 1:43:33did and Mr Alec Murdock to your
1655. 1:43:37knowledge gave consent to download his
1656. 1:43:39cell phone correct to my knowledge yes
1657. 1:43:42and Mr John Marvin Murdock did the same

1665. 1:44:07um you assisted sled when they went out
1666. 1:44:09to the Moselle property and went diving
  1667. 1:44:11uh searching for
  1668. 1:44:15you know
  1669. 1:44:17let me ask you
1670. 1:44:19when you assisted sled dive team what
1671. 1:44:21did you assist sled dive team on June 16
  1672. 1:44:242020. I did
1673. 1:44:27and with a surge in the Moselle property
1674. 1:44:29focusing on waterways ponds the
1675. 1:44:31salkehatchee river access points for
  1676. 1:44:35evidence from the crime correct that's
1677. 1:44:37correct were you looking for the
1678. 1:44:40firearms that were used to murder Maggie
1679. 1:44:43and Paul we were looking for anything
1680. 1:44:45that could have been linked to their
  1681. 1:44:47murders
1682. 1:44:49and then you utilize ATVs and canvas the
1683. 1:44:52entire 1700 acres of land I did that was
  1684. 1:44:55my assignment that day
1685. 1:44:57and once again that was done with
1686. 1:44:59consent by Mr Bernard correct that is
  1687. 1:45:01correct
1688. 1:45:06and then went back the next day
1689. 1:45:08um and and Dove another pond on the
1690. 1:45:11property you remember doing that
1691. 1:45:13I didn't die but I was standing by yes
1692. 1:45:15and again that was with consent right
  1693. 1:45:18correct
  1694. 1:45:20and then you were
1695. 1:45:22given consent and you did a search of a
  1696. 1:45:25white F-250 pickup that
1697. 1:45:28um that Paul normally drove right that
  1698. 1:45:30is correct
1699. 1:45:33and while you were there Mr Davis shows
1700. 1:45:35up and Mr Davis you understood to be the
1701. 1:45:39caretaker for the dogs yes that's what
1702. 1:45:42he explained his job title was at
  1703. 1:45:44Moselle
1704. 1:45:46and that Did You observe him doing his
  1705. 1:45:49work that day
1706. 1:45:50did you watch him wash down the dog runs
  1707. 1:45:54I don't remember that part
  1708. 1:45:59but
1709. 1:46:01to look at his tire marks and make an
1710. 1:46:04assessment as to whether they appeared
1711. 1:46:06to match the tire marks that were seen
  1712. 1:46:08under the shed portion
1713. 1:46:11next to the the old airplane Hangar
1714. 1:46:14right that's correct he Parks Under The
  1715. 1:46:16Canopy and TV
1716. 1:46:26and then on Friday June the 18th
  1717. 1:46:30um
1718. 1:46:33you had a meeting and you you looked at
  1719. 1:46:35uh some photos
1720. 1:46:37I believe crime safety photos of sled
1721. 1:46:40correct I did and you made a mental note
1722. 1:46:42and you put it in your room that that
1723. 1:46:44you notice a few strands of what appear
1724. 1:46:46to be brown hair unable to determine the
1725. 1:46:48length from the photo in Maggie's hands
1726. 1:46:51and fingers right that is correct and
1727. 1:46:54you thought that that possibly was an
1728. 1:46:56indication of a struggle that Maggie had
1729. 1:46:58grabbed someone had their hair in her
  1730. 1:47:01hands right I didn't say that in my
  1731. 1:47:03report no
1732. 1:47:04well so why did you know that in your
  1733. 1:47:06report
1734. 1:47:07because it was an observation
1735. 1:47:11well you also noticed in your that there
1736. 1:47:13were some injuries what appeared to be
1737. 1:47:15Paul's face that like he had been
1738. 1:47:18um some type of struggle right I noted
1739. 1:47:21what what to me could have been
  1740. 1:47:23scratches or a brute
  1741. 1:47:28and we heard some
  1742. 1:47:31testimony yesterday about a bolo
1743. 1:47:34on the lookout for the white
1744. 1:47:38pickup that Paul normally drives I mean
  1745. 1:47:41that pickup was correct that's correct
  1746. 1:47:43it was broken down
1747. 1:47:44yeah and you learned through your
  1748. 1:47:47investigation that
1749. 1:47:49that Paul had switched vehicles with his
1750. 1:47:51uncle John Marvin and John Marvin was
1751. 1:47:53rushing to Moselle when he got the phone
1752. 1:47:55call and Paul's truck and it broke down
1753. 1:47:57the side of the road yeah that's correct
1754. 1:47:59it was Mr I believe Mr Randolph
1755. 1:48:01struggled to get in and out of the truck
  1756. 1:48:08did
  1757. 1:48:09Colony County Sheriff's Office put out
  1758. 1:48:12of it
1759. 1:48:13statement to the Press on the morning of
  1760. 1:48:15June the 8th that there's no need to
  1761. 1:48:18public to be alarmed
1762. 1:48:21I don't believe that came from our
1763. 1:48:22office it did not come through CID for
1764. 1:48:25approval I never seen that press release
  1765. 1:48:35was
