- 0:02American presidents were?
- 0:05From George Washington to today, the
- 0:07United States has had leaders with big
- 0:09ideas, big challenges, and sometimes
- 0:13even big mustaches.
- 0:15Let's explore the full list of US
- 0:17presidents and pick up some fun facts
- 0:20along the way.
- 0:24The first president.
- 0:29The very first president was George
- 0:31Washington, our nation's beginning.
- 0:36Next came John Adams
- 0:40followed by Thomas Jefferson, who
- 0:42doubled the size of the US with the
- 0:44Louisiana Purchase.
- 0:49James Madison helped write the
- 0:51Constitution.
- 0:54And James Monroe created the Monroe
- 0:57Doctrine.
- 1:00Then came John Quincy Adams.
- 1:05And after him, Andrew Jackson, who was
- 1:08known for being as tough as a hickory
- 1:10tree.
- 1:12Martin Van Buren followed.
- 1:16Then William Henry Harrison, whose
- 1:19presidency was the shortest, only about
- 1:22a month.
- 1:26John Tyler became president next.
- 1:30Then James K. Polk, who oversaw the
- 1:33Mexican-American War.
- 1:37After him, came Zachary Taylor.
- 1:43Then Millard Fillmore.
- 1:48Next was Franklin Pierce.
- 1:53Followed by James Buchanan.
- 1:58Civil War and Reconstruction Presidents.
- 2:05Then came Abraham Lincoln, who led the
- 2:08country during the Civil War and worked
- 2:10to end slavery.
- 2:13After Lincoln, Andrew Johnson took
- 2:16office.
- 2:19Then Ulysses S. Grant, a famous Union
- 2:22general.
- 2:26Presidents of the late 1800s.
- 2:33Next was Rutherford B. Hayes.
- 2:38Followed by James A. Garfield.
- 2:42Chester A. Arthur stepped in after
- 2:45Garfield.
- 2:49Then came Grover Cleveland.
- 2:51The first president to serve two
- 2:53non-consecutive terms.
- 2:57So, when Benjamin Harrison served
- 3:00between Cleveland's two presidencies,
- 3:02Cleveland came back again as the 24th
- 3:05president.
- 3:09Early 1900s and World Wars.
- 3:15After that came William McKinley.
- 3:20Then Theodore Roosevelt, the youngest
- 3:22president at age 42, and famous for
- 3:25national parks.
- 3:28Next was William Howard Taft, who later
- 3:31became Chief Justice, the only person to
- 3:34hold both jobs.
- 3:39Woodrow Wilson followed.
- 3:43Then Warren G. Harding.
- 3:46And then Calvin Coolidge, known for
- 3:49being very quiet. Shh.
- 3:54Next came Herbert Hoover.
- 3:58And then Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only
- 4:00president to serve more than two terms.
- 4:03Four in total.
- 4:07Modern presidents.
- 4:12After his long presidency, came Harry S.
- 4:15Truman.
- 4:18Then Dwight D. Eisenhower, a World War
- 4:21II general.
- 4:24Next was John F. Kennedy.
- 4:29Followed by Lyndon B. Johnson.
- 4:33Then came Richard Nixon.
- 4:38Who was followed by Gerald Ford.
- 4:43Jimmy Carter served next.
- 4:46Followed by Ronald Reagan, a former
- 4:48actor.
- 4:51Then came George H. W. Bush.
- 4:58Followed by Bill Clinton.
- 5:02After Clinton was George W. Bush.
- 5:06Then Barack Obama, the first
- 5:08African-American president.
- 5:13Next came Donald Trump.
- 5:17Then Joe Biden.
- 5:20And then Donald Trump again. Making him
- 5:22one of the few presidents to return to
- 5:24office after losing re-election.
- 5:30And that's the full list, from number
- 5:32one to today.
- 5:3445 people serving 47 terms.
- 5:37With Grover Cleveland and Donald Trump
- 5:40counted twice.
- 5:41Now that you know every president, try
- 5:43noticing the patterns.
- 5:46Some were very young. Some were quite
- 5:48old, some were farmers or soldiers, and
- 5:52some were teachers or lawyers.
- 5:54Eight were born in Virginia.
- 5:56Abraham Lincoln was the tallest, and the
- 5:59White House didn't officially get its
- 6:01name until 1901.
- 6:03Each president brought different ideas,
- 6:05challenges, and stories, all shaping the
- 6:08United States in unique ways.
- 6:13And if you ever want to celebrate them,
- 6:15Presidents' Day is the perfect time.
- 6:18It began as a birthday celebration for
- 6:20Washington and Lincoln, and now it
- 6:22honors all the people who've taken on
- 6:24the big responsibility of leading the
- 6:26country.
