- 0:20For Christians, the biggest part of
- 0:22God's story is about how he sent us our
- 0:25savior. Who is it? None other
- 0:29than Jesus, also known as
- 0:32the son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, the
- 0:35Christ, the anointed one, the Messiah of
- 0:38Israel, and of course, savior of the
- 0:41world.
- 0:44The question is, how did he become the
- 0:47savior of the world?
- 0:49So, here is the story of Jesus.
- 0:53Let's go to Bethlehem, the hometown of
- 0:55Jesus.
- 0:56Here is Mary, Jesus' mother. She's a
- 1:00virgin who falls pregnant at the
- 1:01inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Mary and
- 1:04her husband, Joseph, travel to his
- 1:06family's hometown of Bethlehem to
- 1:08register in a census ordered by the
- 1:10Romans. Then, Jesus is born while there
- 1:13in Bethlehem.
- 1:15You might ask, are they really the
- 1:17parents of Jesus?
- 1:18Well, to clarify, Mary is his earthly
- 1:21mother, Joseph is his earthly father,
- 1:24and God the Father is his heavenly
- 1:26father.
- 1:28Back to the story.
- 1:30Shepherds visit the baby Jesus and bow
- 1:32down and praise.
- 1:34When he is 8 days old, Jesus is
- 1:36circumcised as is tradition for Jewish
- 1:38boys. When he's just over a month old,
- 1:41Mary and Joseph take Jesus to Jerusalem
- 1:44to present him at the temple where they
- 1:45offer sacrifices to God.
- 1:48And here are the wise men.
- 1:50They arrive in Jerusalem from eastern
- 1:52lands.
- 1:53They're looking for an infant who has
- 1:55been born king of Jews. King Herod was
- 1:58disturbed at the idea of a rival and
- 2:00asks the wise men to tip him off when
- 2:02they find that infant boy.
- 2:04The wise men find Jesus and worship him,
- 2:07but return home by another route without
- 2:09telling Herod. This is why King Herod
- 2:12furiously orders the massacre of all
- 2:14boys aged two or under in Bethlehem.
- 2:17But, warned in a dream, Joseph, Mary,
- 2:20and Jesus flee to safety in Egypt. They
- 2:23stay until Herod dies. This is not only
- 2:26based on the Bible. Historians believe
- 2:29this happened in 4 BC.
- 2:31Joseph, Mary, and Jesus return to Egypt
- 2:33to their home in Nazareth in Galilee.
- 2:36At the age of 12, Jesus goes to
- 2:38Jerusalem with his parents for the
- 2:40Jewish festival of Passover.
- 2:43Then, Mary and Joseph head home
- 2:45mistakenly leaving Jesus behind. They
- 2:48return to look for him and after three
- 2:50days they find him in the temple talking
- 2:52to the religious teachers.
- 2:55The Bible book Luke says everyone who
- 2:57heard him was amazed at his
- 2:59understanding and his answers. When Mary
- 3:01challenges him about his absence, Jesus
- 3:04replies, "Didn't you know I had to be in
- 3:06my father's house?" That is the first
- 3:08indication Jesus knows of his divinity.
- 3:12This is the only Bible story about
- 3:14Jesus' childhood, adolescence, and early
- 3:17adulthood. Radical teacher John the
- 3:19Baptist, a relative of Jesus, is
- 3:21attracting crowds out into the desert.
- 3:24He's urging them to give up their bad
- 3:26behavior and attitudes.
- 3:28He says he is preparing the way for a
- 3:30great teacher. Jesus leaves Nazareth and
- 3:33goes out into the desert. John says this
- 3:36is the teacher he'd been talking about.
- 3:38The Bible book John quotes John saying,
- 3:40"Look, the lamb of God who takes away
- 3:42the sin of the world. This is the one I
- 3:45meant."
- 3:46He baptizes Jesus in the River Jordan at
- 3:49Bethany.
- 3:50The Bible book Matthew says that as
- 3:53Jesus prayed, heaven was opened and the
- 3:55Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily
- 3:57form like a dove. And a voice came from
- 4:00heaven, "You are my son whom I love.
- 4:03With you I am well pleased."
- 4:06Immediately Jesus goes into the Judean
- 4:08desert for 40 days without food.
- 4:11The devil tempts him three times, but
- 4:14Jesus resists.
- 4:16When the devil departs, Jesus returns to
- 4:18Galilee and makes Capernaum his home
- 4:20base.
- 4:22When he was about 30 years old, he
- 4:24started ministry.
- 4:26What does that mean exactly?
- 4:28That means he started teaching people
- 4:30about God, preaching the good news, and
- 4:32doing miracles.
- 4:34He traveled around all over the place
- 4:36helping people everywhere he went all
- 4:38day, every day he taught, healed, gave,
- 4:41served, prayed for, and rescued people.
- 4:45Just to name a few.
- 4:46At a wedding in Cana, Jesus turns water
- 4:49into wine.
- 4:50This is his first miracle.
- 4:53He healed people like a blind man that
- 4:55had never opened his eyes.
- 4:58There is a man that was crippled and
- 4:59couldn't walk.
- 5:01But with Jesus' words, the man got up
- 5:03and started walking. Jesus did tons of
- 5:06other miracles for people like walking
- 5:07on water and calming storms by speaking
- 5:10to it.
- 5:11He took a little bit of food and
- 5:13multiplied it into enough to feed
- 5:15thousands of people.
- 5:17He cast out demons from people and even
- 5:19raised people from the dead.
- 5:22Pretty impressive, huh?
- 5:24But that's not even close to everything
- 5:26he did.
- 5:27The Bible says that Jesus did so many
- 5:30miracles and helped so many people.
- 5:33He's someone that doesn't just think and
- 5:35tell people that he loves them.
- 5:37He showed it by what he did.
- 5:39Jesus chooses 12 men to be his closest
- 5:42disciples, including Peter, John,
- 5:45Andrew, Bartholomew or Nathanael, James
- 5:48the Lesser or Younger, and Judas, Jude
- 5:51or Thaddaeus, James, Matthew or Levi,
- 5:55Philip, Simon the Zealot, and Thomas.
- 6:01He teaches in synagogues across Galilee.
- 6:04There is the time that he is rejected in
- 6:06Nazareth where people threatened to
- 6:08throw him off a cliff.
- 6:10But he continues to teach and heal sick
- 6:11people, including Simon Peter's
- 6:13mother-in-law.
- 6:15By that time, huge are now following
- 6:17Jesus.
- 6:18Overlooking the Sea of Galilee, Jesus
- 6:21sets out a Christian manifesto, teaching
- 6:23on a range of life's issues, including
- 6:25loving enemies, retaliation, anger,
- 6:29lust, divorce, worry, giving to the
- 6:32needy, and criticizing others. As Jesus
- 6:35uses simple stories, known as parables,
- 6:37to teach deep spiritual truths,
- 6:40Samaritans and Roman Centurion believe
- 6:43in his teachings. After years of
- 6:45traveling around, helping, healing, and
- 6:47teaching people, the time came for him
- 6:50to do the ultimate act of his love to
- 6:53the people. He gave his life.
- 6:56But how? The Jewish teachers and leaders
- 6:59did not like what Jesus was doing or how
- 7:02he claimed that he was the son of God.
- 7:04And so they began to challenge him and
- 7:06plot to kill him.
- 7:08Before it happened, Jesus already
- 7:10predicted his death and resurrection.
- 7:12This is how amazing he is.
- 7:14As Jesus condemns the leaders'
- 7:16hypocrisy, a disciple, Judas, agrees to
- 7:19betray him.
- 7:21After celebrating the Passover meal with
- 7:23his disciples, Jesus is arrested.
- 7:26He goes before Jewish and Roman
- 7:28authorities charged with blasphemy, and
- 7:30the Jewish authorities demand the death
- 7:32penalty. Jesus is crucified on Good
- 7:36Friday. This is where he died for our
- 7:38sins.
- 7:43Of course, this is not how the story
- 7:45ends. After 3 days, Jesus rose from the
- 7:48dead and he's alive today.
- 7:51He visited his disciples and gave him an
- 7:53important command.
- 7:55He told them to follow his example and
- 7:57be just like him.
- 7:59He said, "Go into all the world and
- 8:01share the good news to love people as he
- 8:03did."
- 8:05Then,
- 8:06on the top of the Mount of Olives,
- 8:08Jesus rises to heaven
- 8:10in front of his followers and disappears
- 8:12from view.
- 8:17From birth, death, and rising from the
- 8:19dead, Jesus' story has truly proved that
- 8:22he is really the most important figure
- 8:24in world history. On top of that, his
- 8:28story tells us as we go on the journey
- 8:30of our life,
- 8:32we can always share the good news with
- 8:33the people around us, just like he did.
- 8:36Indeed, teaching by example is the
- 8:39greatest way to share the gospel.
