  1. 0:00Your first point here is make money
  2. 0:02easy.
  3. 0:02>> Yes.
  4. 0:03>> And so when I ask you, when someone's
  5. 0:05coming at money, our relationship with
  6. 0:07money is already at a place kind of like
  7. 0:09finding love. We're desperate for it.
  8. 0:12We're stressed by it. We're paralyzed by
  9. 0:15it. We feel the pressure for it. What do
  10. 0:17you do when you're feeling all of that?
  11. 0:19What's the first thing you need to do?
  12. 0:21>> Step one is you need awareness. And
  13. 0:22again, you probably say this so often
  14. 0:24and people probably heard this so
  15. 0:25frequently, but if you don't have
  16. 0:27awareness on your attachment style
  17. 0:30towards money and how your nervous
  18. 0:32system is when you receive money or when
  19. 0:35money leaves you. When you have to pay
  20. 0:37your bills or give money away.
  21. 0:39I want people to create just a scenario
  22. 0:42of awareness around how you feel and how
  23. 0:45you think when you receive money, when
  24. 0:47you pay money, when you look at your
  25. 0:49bank account, when you open your purse
  26. 0:51or your wallet, and just notice, how do
  27. 0:53I feel?
  28. 0:54>> Mhm.
  29. 0:54>> Do I have shallow breathing? Do I feel
  30. 0:56relaxed? Do I feel anxious? Do I feel
  31. 0:59scarce? Do I feel abundant? Just step
  32. 1:02one is have awareness on, how do I feel
  33. 1:05and how do I think about my money? The
  34. 1:08money I have, the money that's coming
  35. 1:10in, and the money that's going out.
  36. 1:12>> Yeah.
  37. 1:12>> That's step one. And when you can just
  38. 1:14have awareness around it, you can start
  39. 1:16to say, is my relationship the one that
  40. 1:19I want to be having? Do I feel really
  41. 1:20secure around money? If not, okay,
  42. 1:24what's something I can think about?
  43. 1:26First, let me think about my money
  44. 1:27story.
  45. 1:29The story of my life around money. We
  46. 1:31grow up as kids and we
  47. 1:34watch our parents
  48. 1:36in their relationship and we tend to
  49. 1:38develop the relationship style of our
  50. 1:40parents unless we learn how to heal as a
  51. 1:42teenager and have some type of
  52. 1:44breakthrough.
  53. 1:45We're creating some type of attachment
  54. 1:46style based on what we see with our
  55. 1:47parents.
  56. 1:48But think about all the conversations
  57. 1:50your parents had around money. And if
  58. 1:52your parents didn't have a secure
  59. 1:53relationship, if they fought, did they
  60. 1:55fight about money? Were you involved in
  61. 1:58the conversation about how expensive
  62. 1:59things were? About your school or sports
  63. 2:02or programs that they had to pay for
  64. 2:03that they couldn't afford? Did they
  65. 2:05argue? Did they have challenges? Did
  66. 2:07they get divorced?
  67. 2:09Money is one of the biggest reasons
  68. 2:10people get divorced. It's one of the
  69. 2:11biggest arguments in marriage as well.
  70. 2:14So, just notice, is my nervous system,
  71. 2:16is my body, is my energy, are my
  72. 2:18thoughts stressed out around money? Do I
  73. 2:21feel scarce or do I feel abundant?
  74. 2:25That's kind of step one, and then step
  75. 2:27two is understanding your money story.
  76. 2:29Because when you can reflect on your
  77. 2:30money story, you can see what your money
  78. 2:33personality style is today.
  79. 2:35And for many years,
  80. 2:37and we can talk about both of us
  81. 2:38thinking about our past. For many years,
  82. 2:41I didn't understand money growing up. We
  83. 2:44didn't have a lot growing up. We weren't
  84. 2:46completely poor, but
  85. 2:48I wasn't as, you know, well-off as the
  86. 2:49other kids in my class. So, I always
  87. 2:51felt a little bit beneath everyone else.
  88. 2:53And so, my belief system was around
  89. 2:55that. I'm a just a little bit under
  90. 2:56everyone else. Everyone else is doing a
  91. 2:57little bit better than us.
  92. 2:59Sure, we have a home and I'm going to
  93. 3:00school, but everyone's got rollerblades,
  94. 3:02I'm in sneakers. People have Nintendo, I
  95. 3:05don't have one. I'm reading a book.
  96. 3:06Whatever it is. It was like I was a
  97. 3:07little bit beneath. And that started to
  98. 3:09shape my story, my personality style.
  99. 3:11So, I felt very insecure around money.
  100. 3:14And when I got it, I got really excited,
  101. 3:16but I didn't know what to do with it.
  102. 3:17So, I was also like afraid, I was
  103. 3:19insecure, and I was just unsure of it.
  104. 3:22And it really started to shape my
  105. 3:24personality style. Now, when I was in my
  106. 3:26teen years, my dad started to make more
  107. 3:28money and started to teach me a little
  108. 3:30bit, but I was still like just I want to
  109. 3:32be a teenager. I don't want to think
  110. 3:33about this stuff. It seems confusing. I
  111. 3:35just want to have fun.
  112. 3:37In my 20s, when I got done playing
  113. 3:41football, I I went to go pursue
  114. 3:42football, got injured, and I was on my
  115. 3:44sister's couch for a year and a half,
  116. 3:46and I had no money. And I just felt
  117. 3:48like, how am I going to make this work?
  118. 3:50How am I going to make money? I don't
  119. 3:52know what my skills are. I don't know
  120. 3:53what my talents are. This is in 2008
  121. 3:55when the economy was crashing. So, it
  122. 3:57kind of felt like it is right now with
  123. 3:59inflation going up so much right now and
  124. 4:01people worried about money in the
  125. 4:02future. I didn't understand.
  126. 4:05And I needed to find money mentors to
  127. 4:08start teaching me how to learn about how
  128. 4:10I can receive money and spend it in a
  129. 4:13more efficient way.
  130. 4:14>> Yeah, I think what I'm thinking about
  131. 4:15when I'm hearing you is if me and you
  132. 4:17went back to a place in our life where
  133. 4:20we really didn't have money.
  134. 4:22>> Yes.
  135. 4:23>> And you think about someone who's in
  136. 4:24that position who's listening to us
  137. 4:26right now
  138. 4:27and in their head they're thinking, "But
  139. 4:29how do I
  140. 4:30become abundant
  141. 4:32>> Mhm.
  142. 4:32>> when I don't have Well, like my natural
  143. 4:34thing is like I'm just struggling to pay
  144. 4:36my next bill. And me and you have both
  145. 4:38been in those situations. I remember
  146. 4:40when I was growing up, I grew up in a
  147. 4:42house where we had just enough. Like
  148. 4:45that was the language my parents used.
  149. 4:46We have just enough.
  150. 4:48And my parents would often argue about
  151. 4:50money. I remember I wasn't allowed to
  152. 4:52buy cool shoes and stuff. I'd have like
  153. 4:54the the knockoff cheapest brand from
  154. 4:56whatever, which was I actually didn't
  155. 4:57have an issue with that. I didn't have
  156. 4:58an issue with with any of it because we
  157. 5:00had food and that was my normality. But
  158. 5:02it's really interesting because the
  159. 5:03amount of times growing up, I started
  160. 5:05working when I was 14.
  161. 5:08And I think that gave me a really
  162. 5:10interesting sense of how hard it was to
  163. 5:13make money. Because I started working at
  164. 5:1514. I used to get paid £2 per street
  165. 5:19that I delivered newspapers.
  166. 5:21>> Wow.
  167. 5:21>> So, imagine there's 100 houses, it's
  168. 5:23going to take me like
  169. 5:24>> Not per house?
  170. 5:25>> No, no, no.
  171. 5:26>> Per street?
  172. 5:26>> Per street. So, I did five streets. And
  173. 5:29so, I'd get £10 at the end of the week
  174. 5:31>> Wow.
  175. 5:31>> if I did five streets. And each street
  176. 5:33would take me at least an hour. Maybe I
  177. 5:36don't know, something like that. And so,
  178. 5:37I'd walk around. I'd pull this thing and
  179. 5:40I'd deliver it. And I got an
  180. 5:41understanding of how hard it was to make
  181. 5:44money.
  182. 5:45But then that became a story for me
  183. 5:47going to your point.
  184. 5:48>> Making money is hard.
  185. 5:49>> Making money is hard.
  186. 5:50>> Mhm.
  187. 5:51>> And that there's only a certain amount
  188. 5:53of money you're allowed to make at this
  189. 5:55level. Like you're a 14-year-old. Then I
  190. 5:57worked in retail, I stacked shelves at a
  191. 5:59grocery store. I worked at a store
  192. 6:01called Morrison's, which is like working
  193. 6:03at Walmart.
  194. 6:04And there I remember I got paid like £5
  195. 6:07an hour. And then you get like time and
  196. 6:09a half if you work the weekends and the
  197. 6:11evenings.
  198. 6:12All of this to say that I probably spent
  199. 6:15my whole life only seeing zero in my
  200. 6:17bank account because everything that
  201. 6:19would come in would pay for my phone
  202. 6:21bill, my car insurance that I paid for,
  203. 6:24whatever it was that I was taking care
  204. 6:25of, so I wasn't relying on my parents
  205. 6:27apart from I lived in their home,
  206. 6:28obviously.
  207. 6:30But I always felt like money came in,
  208. 6:31money went out. And my story around
  209. 6:34money was people who have money are
  210. 6:37doing something bad. So I lived in a
  211. 6:40home whenever we went to a friend's home
  212. 6:42and they had a nice home, my family
  213. 6:44would always say, "Oh yeah, but they do
  214. 6:46dodgy stuff to make money." All the
  215. 6:47language around money was people with
  216. 6:49money are doing bad stuff. So in my head
  217. 6:51it was like, "Oh, if you have money,
  218. 6:52then you must be doing shady stuff
  219. 6:55because we don't have money and we're
  220. 6:56not doing any shady stuff."
  221. 6:57>> Right, right. You must be hurting people
  222. 6:58to make money.
  223. 6:59>> Correct. In some way, exploiting
  224. 7:01>> Taking advantage of people.
  225. 7:02>> advantage, whatever. So everything
  226. 7:04you're saying is so true
  227. 7:06because then when I got to a point in my
  228. 7:08life where I was just trying to do good
  229. 7:10and I had something like 150, 200
  230. 7:13million views on content.
  231. 7:14>> You had no money.
  232. 7:15>> I was 4 months away from being broke.
  233. 7:17>> I met you at this time.
  234. 7:18>> met you around this time.
  235. 7:19>> you at this time, yes.
  236. 7:20>> And it was really interesting to me
  237. 7:21because that was the time that I was
  238. 7:24actually doing this work, which is why
  239. 7:26this book is so powerful, because I
  240. 7:28realized that I couldn't, even with 150,
  241. 7:31200 million views, it wasn't that that
  242. 7:33made money because my story and my
  243. 7:37personality style was anxious. I felt
  244. 7:40like it was wrong to make money. Like
  245. 7:42that's actually what it was. I felt like
  246. 7:44making money was bad.
  247. 7:45>> The first thing I think you need to be
  248. 7:47aware of is that your beliefs dictate
  249. 7:50your behaviors. So, if you believe that
  250. 7:53money is bad or people who make a lot of
  251. 7:57money are bad and take advantage of
  252. 7:59others. And therefore, me having lack
  253. 8:02right now means I'm a good person. And I
  254. 8:03don't want to become a bad person. Then
  255. 8:05that belief is going to dictate your
  256. 8:06behaviors and you're going to stay in
  257. 8:08lack. You're going to stay in scarcity
  258. 8:11and you're going to see opportunities
  259. 8:12that only give you just enough as
  260. 8:14opposed to opportunities that could
  261. 8:16create incredible wealth for yourself
  262. 8:18financially, but also an emotional
  263. 8:20wealth that you've never had before.
  264. 8:22So, that's one of the things you want to
  265. 8:24understand. It's first that your beliefs
  266. 8:26dictate your behaviors.
  267. 8:27>> That's a big one by the way. That's
  268. 8:28huge. Like that I just want to point
  269. 8:30that out for people. Like that's so
  270. 8:31huge.
  271. 8:31>> your belief
  272. 8:32>> Yeah, that's huge.
  273. 8:33>> Your belief got you to a place of I am
  274. 8:36impacting hundreds of millions of people
  275. 8:38from these these videos that I created
  276. 8:40with my talents.
  277. 8:41But I don't know how to make money with
  278. 8:42them and I don't know if I actually
  279. 8:44should because then I could be bad and
  280. 8:46wrong or people could perceive me as I
  281. 8:48did something bad to make this money.
  282. 8:51>> And I'm a [snorts] spiritual person. I'm
  283. 8:53a monk. I've done all these things. I
  284. 8:55don't want to have that life.
  285. 8:57>> Yeah.
  286. 8:57>> But I want to make an impact and I don't
  287. 8:58want to be poor. So, I think a lot of
  288. 8:59people are struggling with that mindset.
  289. 9:02>> What are the other ones you hear? What
  290. 9:03are the other focusing on that beliefs
  291. 9:05here? What are you hearing from people
  292. 9:07about that That's my belief
  293. 9:08>> Yeah.
  294. 9:09>> and that's very much my history and
  295. 9:11story as you said. What other stuff do
  296. 9:13you hear from people?
  297. 9:14>> The biggest shift that will create
  298. 9:17abundance in your life
  299. 9:18is a mindset habit in unlocking wealth
  300. 9:21for yourself. And one of the big lies or
  301. 9:24one of the big blocks that holds people
  302. 9:26back from financial opportunity is that
  303. 9:29I I cannot be generous with my time, my
  304. 9:33wisdom, my knowledge, or my secrets to
  305. 9:36others cuz if I am, they will take it
  306. 9:39and run with it and I will be left with
  307. 9:41nothing. So therefore, I'm going to
  308. 9:42hoard my energy, I'm going to hoard my
  309. 9:44time, my knowledge, and only keep it to
  310. 9:47me so that others don't have good ideas
  311. 9:50or have my help. And from all the
  312. 9:52different billionaires and millionaires
  313. 9:55and financial leaders in the world that
  314. 9:56I've interviewed, I know you've
  315. 9:58interviewed a lot of them.
  316. 9:59There is a question I would always ask
  317. 10:02individuals who've made incredible
  318. 10:03amounts of money.
  319. 10:05And
  320. 10:06that keeps helping them create more
  321. 10:08wealth year after year.
  322. 10:10And they all say the same thing. Those
  323. 10:12who have had a sustainably good heart in
  324. 10:14the process.
  325. 10:15Is that you have to have a generous
  326. 10:16mindset. So the mindset habit is the
  327. 10:19first thing that you have to think about
  328. 10:20when creating abundance with your money,
  329. 10:22but also feeling abundant internally.
  330. 10:25And it's coming with generosity. So if
  331. 10:26you feel like you're stuck right now, if
  332. 10:28you feel like you have nothing. This was
  333. 10:30what you were at 8 years ago when I met
  334. 10:32you. This was where I was at 15 years
  335. 10:35ago when I was on my sister's couch. I
  336. 10:36had no money. I was in student loan
  337. 10:39debt. Was sleeping on her couch. I
  338. 10:41didn't think I had any skills. I didn't
  339. 10:43have a college degree yet. I was like,
  340. 10:45how am I going to make money if I don't
  341. 10:46know how to make money and I don't have
  342. 10:48any talent or skill and I'm in debt. I
  343. 10:50didn't understand it. It felt
  344. 10:51impossible.
  345. 10:53And the thing that I shifted when I
  346. 10:55started to meeting money mentors is I
  347. 10:57needed to learn the first habit, which
  348. 10:59is the mindset habit, which is a habit
  349. 11:01of generosity and gratitude.
  350. 11:03>> So what did that look like then? What
  351. 11:04was the practical step?
  352. 11:05>> What it looked like was how do I meet
  353. 11:08money people? People who have money,
  354. 11:09people who have success, people can
  355. 11:11teach me knowledge. I needed to come
  356. 11:13with the sense of energy, of curiosity,
  357. 11:16of possibilities, and of joy. I
  358. 11:18literally wrote a list down of all these
  359. 11:20different things that I thought were my
  360. 11:22talents. I go, how can I make money? I
  361. 11:23don't have any skills. I played football
  362. 11:26and now I'm injured. What can I do for
  363. 11:27people?
  364. 11:28But I was like, well, I'm really
  365. 11:29curious. Maybe I can just ask people
  366. 11:31questions. And never did I think in a
  367. 11:33million years that I could have a
  368. 11:3512-year-old podcast just asking
  369. 11:37questions and make millions of dollars a
  370. 11:39year. I never thought that was possible.
  371. 11:41I was in my early 20s, and I was like,
  372. 11:43you know what? I've got a lot of energy.
  373. 11:45I've got a lot of passion. So, let me
  374. 11:47bring passion and energy to other people
  375. 11:49and excitement. And that energy was
  376. 11:52infectious. And there's a currency
  377. 11:54that's tied to that energy of passion,
  378. 11:56joy, excitement, curiosity. That
  379. 11:58currency may not look like money, but
  380. 12:01for those who are older, who have no
  381. 12:03more passion, they're burnt out, they're
  382. 12:05exhausted, it is the highest form of
  383. 12:08currency. They want that. They crave
  384. 12:10that energy. They've burnt themselves
  385. 12:12out for decades. They want to feel young
  386. 12:14again. They want to feel curious again.
  387. 12:16They want to feel excited again. And
  388. 12:18when you come to someone with that
  389. 12:19energy, you are bringing a different
  390. 12:21mindset. So, the mindset of curiosity,
  391. 12:24joy, passion, presence, like just
  392. 12:27connecting with someone and asking them
  393. 12:28a question
  394. 12:30is such a valuable currency. So, we have
  395. 12:32to look into these untapped skills,
  396. 12:35talents, currencies inside of us that
  397. 12:37are hidden to others, but inside of us,
  398. 12:40they can create magic.
  399. 12:42That's one of them. Another one is just
  400. 12:43being generous with your time, with your
  401. 12:46resources, with your ideas, and helping
  402. 12:50others succeed.
  403. 12:51>> I love that because I didn't even know
  404. 12:53that then, but I was doing it
  405. 12:54unconsciously.
  406. 12:55>> Yes, you were.
  407. 12:56>> So, I really wanted to interview
  408. 12:59incredible people, but I didn't have a
  409. 13:01platform at the time when I met you. And
  410. 13:04so, I'd partnered up with Nasdaq. And by
  411. 13:06the way, just to be really clear with
  412. 13:07everyone, I didn't get paid to do this.
  413. 13:09So, Nasdaq had something where
  414. 13:11everyone's using Facebook Live, and I
  415. 13:13said, "Hey, could I have an hour in the
  416. 13:15Nasdaq building whenever I have an
  417. 13:17amazing guest that says yes, so that I
  418. 13:19can interview them on Nasdaq Live?" And
  419. 13:23they would put the picture up on the
  420. 13:25middle of Times Square.
  421. 13:26>> billboard.
  422. 13:27>> So, now I could reach out to people I
  423. 13:28looked up to.
  424. 13:29>> That's the reason why I went on the
  425. 13:30show.
  426. 13:30>> Exactly.
  427. 13:31>> didn't know who you were until I saw,
  428. 13:32"Hey, I can get you on a billboard on
  429. 13:34Times Square." I go, "That's value to me
  430. 13:36right now."
  431. 13:37>> generous and I'm trying to find a way
  432. 13:39because I don't have anything to offer,
  433. 13:41but I admire you. And it was all people
  434. 13:42I admired. It was yourself, it was Ryan
  435. 13:44Holiday said yes. Me and Ryan had met
  436. 13:46maybe once before that, but Ryan came on
  437. 13:48that show. And there were a bunch of
  438. 13:49other authors. Deepak Chopra came on
  439. 13:51that show with me. And it was all people
  440. 13:53that I'd admired, looked up to for a
  441. 13:55long time.
  442. 13:56And exactly that. That's how First of
  443. 13:58all, we became great friends off of it.
  444. 14:00But the point is, it's exactly what
  445. 14:02you're saying that even though I felt I
  446. 14:04had nothing to offer, I had to find a
  447. 14:06way to create something to offer someone
  448. 14:09of value. I didn't get paid for it for
  449. 14:11that show. I didn't get paid to run it.
  450. 14:13I didn't make any money from it. But it
  451. 14:15created an opportunity for me to connect
  452. 14:17with friends, to connect with people
  453. 14:19that were doing incredible things. And
  454. 14:21of course, allowed me to showcase my
  455. 14:22talents so that then I could show it to
  456. 14:24other people. I remember I had Ryan
  457. 14:26Harwood on the show who founded PureWow.
  458. 14:30And he just sold it to Gary V.
  459. 14:31>> Yeah.
  460. 14:32>> And that's how I met Gary. So Ryan came
  461. 14:34on my show and he was just like, "Jay, I
  462. 14:36love you. You're a great interviewer.
  463. 14:37Like, you have such great energy." He
  464. 14:39was He really liked my passion. And he
  465. 14:41said, "You got to come meet Gary." And I
  466. 14:42was like, "No way. Like, I love Gary."
  467. 14:44And so he took me to meet Gary for the
  468. 14:46first time. We had a meeting in his
  469. 14:47office and that's how I built my
  470. 14:49relationship with him. It was all thanks
  471. 14:50to Ryan. And so when you think about it
  472. 14:52now, like when I'm I've never thought
  473. 14:54about it until what you're saying.
  474. 14:55>> Yes.
  475. 14:56>> Now when I look back, Ryan's been on the
  476. 14:57podcast like four times now, whatever. I
  477. 14:59love his books. So many relationships
  478. 15:02came out of that. And so I think when
  479. 15:04you live in a world of I have nothing to
  480. 15:05offer and I don't have anything, it
  481. 15:08becomes really hard to create.
  482. 15:10>> And most people think when I have
  483. 15:11nothing, I need to take from someone
  484. 15:14else.
  485. 15:14>> Yes.
  486. 15:15>> I don't have anything, so I can't give
  487. 15:18anything if I don't have it. So I need
  488. 15:19someone to give me money right now cuz
  489. 15:21I'm broke, I'm poor, I'm stuck, I'm
  490. 15:23stressed, I'm anxious. I can't think out
  491. 15:26of myself. And this first habit is
  492. 15:28really gratitude and generosity is the
  493. 15:31gateway to abundance.
  494. 15:33And it may not mean you're going to make
  495. 15:35money right away. You didn't make money
  496. 15:37by having me on the show right away. But
  497. 15:39we became friends, I helped you, you
  498. 15:41helped me, over time we helped each
  499. 15:43other create more abundance together.
  500. 15:45Not only financially, which we've done
  501. 15:47together, but a type of richness that
  502. 15:51isn't about money.
  503. 15:53And this book, again, it's it's a money
  504. 15:55book, but it's really like it doesn't
  505. 15:57matter how much money you have if you
  506. 15:59don't feel like you have a rich life
  507. 16:00inside of you.
  508. 16:01>> That's real.
  509. 16:02>> It does not matter how much is in your
  510. 16:04bank account, how big your net worth is,
  511. 16:07if you don't feel like you have an
  512. 16:08abundant life, if you're stressed, if
  513. 16:10you're overwhelmed, if you're anxious,
  514. 16:12if you're constantly in drama, that is
  515. 16:15not abundance.
  516. 16:17A high net worth does not mean you are
  517. 16:20free. And the goal is for us to feel
  518. 16:23free every moment of our lives as often
  519. 16:26as possible, and allow money to be a
  520. 16:28tool to create incredible opportunities,
  521. 16:31memories, moments, where you can be
  522. 16:33generous with it, with the people you
  523. 16:35care about, the causes you care about,
  524. 16:38the institutions you care about, to
  525. 16:39serve more people,
  526. 16:41and feel good about doing it, not feel
  527. 16:44bad about doing it. And that's part of
  528. 16:46this process. Most people, when they
  529. 16:48lack money, they want to take from
  530. 16:50others. They want someone to help them.
  531. 16:53And you need to flip it on its head and
  532. 16:55say, "How can I help others? Even when I
  533. 16:56have nothing." That is the time to be
  534. 16:59more generous
  535. 17:00and in more gratitude, and say, "Thank
  536. 17:02you for this opportunity." Even if you
  537. 17:04have to just lie to yourself for a
  538. 17:05moment say, "I'm stuck, I'm on my
  539. 17:07sister's couch, I have no money, I'm 4
  540. 17:09months in 4 months I'm going to be out
  541. 17:10of an apartment, and I don't know where
  542. 17:12the money's coming."
  543. 17:13Just say, "Thank you, God. Thank you,
  544. 17:15universe, for this opportunity to learn.
  545. 17:17This opportunity
  546. 17:17>> to grow cuz I'll never be here again. I
  547. 17:20interview I don't know if you've had Ken
  548. 17:21Honda on, but he wrote
  549. 17:23>> Happy Money, but I haven't had him on.
  550. 17:24>> Dude, he's so cool. I love this approach
  551. 17:26to this. And he's talking similar style
  552. 17:29about how do you just live a rich life
  553. 17:31irrelevant of whether you have money or
  554. 17:33not. And again, this is the what I want
  555. 17:34people to get to. When you are poor,
  556. 17:37when you're broke, when you're
  557. 17:37struggling financially, it feels really
  558. 17:40hard to feel abundant and rich.
  559. 17:43And we want to start shifting our
  560. 17:45thoughts, our emotions, and our energy
  561. 17:46on
  562. 17:47"Okay, I know I'm in this financial
  563. 17:49situation. It doesn't feel good, but in
  564. 17:51order to get out of it, it's not feeling
  565. 17:54worse about it.
  566. 17:55It's starting to feel better about me,
  567. 17:57better about my values, my character, my
  568. 18:00kindness, my generosity, and seeing how
  569. 18:02can I add value to others?"
  570. 18:05And that's the first thing we need to be
  571. 18:06thinking about, how can I get into a
  572. 18:07richness inside of me to serve others
  573. 18:11and take care of me at the same time?
  574. 18:14And one of the practices are these
  575. 18:16social experiments or exercises similar
  576. 18:18to you that Ken has is that whenever
  577. 18:20money comes to him, whether it's a
  578. 18:22check, whether it's a Venmo payment,
  579. 18:24whatever it might be, he just says thank
  580. 18:26you to that money. He looks at that
  581. 18:28number, if it's a penny, if it's a
  582. 18:30million dollars, if it's your your
  583. 18:32normal check you get coming in in the
  584. 18:34mail every 2 weeks, he looks at it and
  585. 18:36says, "Thank you." And literally opens
  586. 18:38his heart
  587. 18:39and loves that money that comes to him.
  588. 18:42He says, "Thank you.
  589. 18:43Where do you want to go?
  590. 18:45Do you want to go to my bank account? Do
  591. 18:47you want to go to my savings? Do you
  592. 18:48want to go to investments? Do you want
  593. 18:49to go towards paying off debt? Do you
  594. 18:51want me to give you away?"
  595. 18:52And it might be a weird kind of like
  596. 18:54>> like it. Yeah.
  597. 18:54>> exercise, but I love this approach
  598. 18:59to just being mindful of money when it
  599. 19:01you pay bills, when you pay off debt,
  600. 19:03say thank you as well.
  601. 19:05"Thank you for allowing me to pay off
  602. 19:06this debt. Thank you for paying my cell
  603. 19:09phone bill so I can call my friends and
  604. 19:10family that I love. Thank you for the
  605. 19:12ability to live a richer life.
  606. 19:16>> Yeah.
  607. 19:16>> And when we start to approach money in
  608. 19:18that way,
  609. 19:20it doesn't mean money's going to fall
  610. 19:21from the sky and come to us abundantly.
  611. 19:24But we're going to start to feel more
  612. 19:26rich and abundant internally, which that
  613. 19:28energy is what will attract more
  614. 19:30opportunities. Those opportunities could
  615. 19:33lead to millions. This hostess that came
  616. 19:36to you, she brought that thankful
  617. 19:38energy, that present energy, that
  618. 19:40loving, joyful, curious energy, and it
  619. 19:43created an abundance of opportunities.
  620. 19:46>> Yeah.
  621. 19:47>> And connection. When you have no money,
  622. 19:49when you're broke, when you feel
  623. 19:51stressed out, overwhelmed, burnt out,
  624. 19:53you lost your job,
  625. 19:54you feel like you need help. And you may
  626. 19:57need help.
  627. 19:58And the best way to create abundance
  628. 20:01is to go from helplessness to
  629. 20:04helpfulness. So instead of saying, "I
  630. 20:07feel helpless. I don't know what to do."
  631. 20:09You've got to flip and say, "How can I
  632. 20:10be helpful? How can I help myself but by
  633. 20:13also helping someone else? How can I
  634. 20:15shift out of this negative energy into
  635. 20:17an energy of abundance?" Which is so
  636. 20:19hard to do when you have nothing. I
  637. 20:21remember for a year and a half feeling
  638. 20:23trapped on my sister's couch with no
  639. 20:25money, thinking, "How am I going to do
  640. 20:26this?"
  641. 20:27And there just got to be a decision
  642. 20:29where you say, "I'm going to get up and
  643. 20:31I'm going to get out of this funk, out
  644. 20:32of this energy, and choose and decide to
  645. 20:35bring energy to someone else without
  646. 20:37asking for anything in return." When you
  647. 20:39do that, you'll start to build momentum.
  648. 20:42And that's what's going to help you get
  649. 20:42to the next level.
  650. 20:43>> [snorts]
  651. 20:43>> The biggest trap is when you feel scarce
  652. 20:47and you start making money and you still
  653. 20:49feel trapped. When you see everyone else
  654. 20:52having fun with money and going on that
  655. 20:54trip with their girlfriends or buying
  656. 20:56that expensive car to show off to their
  657. 20:58guy friends or getting the nice watches
  658. 21:00or having the cool shoes and you're
  659. 21:02thinking, "Oh, if I could really have
  660. 21:04money, then I I have these things that
  661. 21:05would make me feel cool or feel better.
  662. 21:08But if we can approach life and just be
  663. 21:11like, "Man, life is so good with what I
  664. 21:14have." That is true wealth. I asked
  665. 21:17them, you know, if money walked in and
  666. 21:19you were at a party, how would you
  667. 21:21respond?
  668. 21:22And they said, "I would run to the bar.
  669. 21:25I would not make eye contact. I would
  670. 21:27gossip behind their back to other people
  671. 21:29there about money. Uh I would look down
  672. 21:31at them, but then I would use them and
  673. 21:33abuse them because I would really need
  674. 21:35money.
  675. 21:35>> [music]
  676. 21:36>> And I would ghost them afterwards."
  677. 21:38>> Wow.
  678. 21:39>> And I go, "Wow." And they were like,
  679. 21:40"Yeah, I know. It's really bad." But
  680. 21:42they were being honest.
  681. 21:42>> Yeah.
  682. 21:43>> So I want people to be honest. Like,
  683. 21:44what is your relationship with money?
  684. 21:46And just imagine
  685. 21:47>> That's crazy.
  686. 21:47>> if you were money and someone treated
  687. 21:50you that way.
  688. 21:51>> I remember [snorts] the day after I
  689. 21:52realized I was 4 months away from being
  690. 21:53broke. I must have emailed a thousand
  691. 21:56people saying, "I will do anything. Here
  692. 21:59are my skills."
  693. 22:00>> Consulting, right?
  694. 22:01>> videos. I will consult. I'll run your
  695. 22:04social media. Those weren't things I
  696. 22:06wanted to do with my life.
  697. 22:08But I needed to create a foundation from
  698. 22:10which I could then invest that into what
  699. 22:12I wanted to do. And actually that year,
  700. 22:14everything I made, I invested into
  701. 22:16starting this podcast.
  702. 22:17>> Yes.
  703. 22:18>> So everything [clears throat] I made
  704. 22:19this year went into launching On Purpose
  705. 22:21because that's not what I wanted to do.
  706. 22:23I didn't want to edit other people's
  707. 22:24videos. I didn't want to launch social
  708. 22:27media profiles. I didn't want to coach
  709. 22:29and consult. But I had those skills.
  710. 22:32>> Yes.
  711. 22:32>> this is one of the things sometimes is
  712. 22:34that we all have skills that are
  713. 22:36valuable somewhere. And they may not be
  714. 22:39the skills that you want to do for the
  715. 22:40rest of your life.
  716. 22:41>> Now, but the season of life you need to
  717. 22:43do that.
  718. 22:43>> of life and I think there's something to
  719. 22:44be said for that because we all want to
  720. 22:47be paid for what we love doing. But even
  721. 22:50my life today, I have there's a lot of
  722. 22:51things I have to do.
  723. 22:53>> Yes.
  724. 22:53>> And there's a lot of things I love to
  725. 22:54do. And that's life.
  726. 22:56>> Yeah, and like you said, the seasonal
  727. 22:57side of things. Like, when I was just
  728. 22:59getting started making money, this was
  729. 23:01in 2008, 2009, 2010. I was using
  730. 23:04LinkedIn as a platform and a tool to
  731. 23:07meet
  732. 23:08CEOs, executives, and business leaders.
  733. 23:11And I was helping them originally with
  734. 23:12their LinkedIn profile. To then just
  735. 23:14saying, "Hey, how can I help you
  736. 23:15optimize your profile? I see that it's
  737. 23:18missing some things here. I'll do it for
  738. 23:19free." And I did this to build
  739. 23:21relationships with them. And through
  740. 23:23that, they just all wanted to help me
  741. 23:24and give back to me. And then eventually
  742. 23:26someone said, "Hey, I'll pay you for
  743. 23:27this. This is really helpful." I was
  744. 23:29like, "Oh, I can make money on
  745. 23:30LinkedIn." It's not what I wanted to do,
  746. 23:32but I had a skill to do it right then.
  747. 23:34So, I did that for a few years, and once
  748. 23:37I had that foundation, I used that money
  749. 23:39to launch The School of Greatness as
  750. 23:40well, because I had a couple years of
  751. 23:42runway now.
  752. 23:43And I didn't want to do that forever,
  753. 23:45but I did it for the season. I got
  754. 23:47skills, I made money, and I created a
  755. 23:49sense of freedom for myself to do what I
  756. 23:52really wanted to do later.
  757. 23:53>> Yeah. What about this idea of
  758. 23:56I want to make money quick. Like I just
  759. 23:58want to make a million dollars in a
  760. 23:59week. I want to find that hack that
  761. 24:02solves my money problems. Like what's
  762. 24:03your take on that? Is that possible?
  763. 24:05>> I've got money wounds, and it's because
  764. 24:07I wanted to make easy money in my past.
  765. 24:10Not make money easy.
  766. 24:12And I don't know anyone that doesn't
  767. 24:14want to make easy money. Like
  768. 24:17our ego wants it to come to us now. And
  769. 24:19we want to find the quick hack or the
  770. 24:21the quick investment that's going to 10x
  771. 24:23in 2 months.
  772. 24:24Sure, there's always outliers that
  773. 24:26figure out a way to do that. But every
  774. 24:28time I've tried to do that, I've lost my
  775. 24:30money. And it's been painful. And I'm
  776. 24:32like, "Okay, I think I've learned that
  777. 24:33lesson." But there's this new like quick
  778. 24:35easy money opportunity.
  779. 24:37And every time I do it again, I'm like,
  780. 24:39"What was I thinking?"
  781. 24:40>> Yeah.
  782. 24:41>> You see that others acts like there's a
  783. 24:43way to do it so easy. If you just invest
  784. 24:46in crypto, if you just invest in this,
  785. 24:48if you just do this thing, you're going
  786. 24:49to make quick and easy money.
  787. 24:51I don't know anyone who's made hundreds
  788. 24:53of millions, millions, or billions who's
  789. 24:56lived that way.
  790. 24:57They might have invested and gone all in
  791. 25:00on one business and created generational
  792. 25:03wealth or maybe they went all in on
  793. 25:05investing in one main stock that ended
  794. 25:08up 10 or 20 x in over time.
  795. 25:10But going the quick make easy money way
  796. 25:14doesn't usually work and it's painful
  797. 25:16lessons you have to live afterwards.
