- 0:11In this video, we'll dig deeper into the
- 0:13AI fluency competency of
- 0:16discernment. AI fluency means working
- 0:18with AI effectively, efficiently,
- 0:20ethically, and
- 0:22safely. Discernment is specifically
- 0:24about evaluating AI outputs, processes,
- 0:27and behaviors. essentially your quality
- 0:29control system for AI
- 0:31collaboration. Discernment is your
- 0:33ability to critically evaluate what AI
- 0:35produces, how it produces it, and how it
- 0:37behaves. It's kind of the flip side of
- 0:40description. If description is about
- 0:42clearly communicating what you want,
- 0:44discernment is about deciding whether
- 0:46what you get back actually meets your
- 0:49needs. Developing your discernment helps
- 0:51you identify when AI outputs are
- 0:53valuable versus problematic. Recognize
- 0:56strengths and limitations and determine
- 0:58when outputs are ready to use or need
- 1:01more work. Doing this well requires both
- 1:04domain expertise, in other words,
- 1:06knowing enough to judge quality, and an
- 1:09understanding of how AI systems work,
- 1:11including their typical
- 1:13shortcomings. Remember, even the most
- 1:16advanced AI systems can make reasoning
- 1:18errors, produce factual mistakes, or act
- 1:20in unexpected ways. Your capacity for
- 1:22discernment acts as an essential
- 1:25safeguard. The most straightforward form
- 1:27of discernment is evaluating the quality
- 1:29of what the AI actually produces. When
- 1:33reviewing AI generated content, ask
- 1:35yourself questions like, is this
- 1:37factually accurate? Is it appropriate
- 1:39for my audience and purpose? Is it
- 1:41coherent and well structured? Does it
- 1:44meet my requirements? And does it add
- 1:46value or solve the problem I intended?
- 1:50We call this first concept product
- 1:52discernment, the ability to judge the
- 1:54accuracy and value of AI created output.
- 1:58When interacting with AI, you need to
- 2:01assess not just what the AI produces,
- 2:03but how it got there. Some things to
- 2:06look out for include logical errors,
- 2:08lapses in the AI's attention, taking
- 2:11inappropriate steps, getting stuck on
- 2:14one small detail or interpretation and
- 2:16being unable to consider any
- 2:18alternatives, or getting trapped in
- 2:20circular reasoning. For example, imagine
- 2:23you're working with AI to expand on one
- 2:25of five outline options it offered for a
- 2:27document. After several rounds of back
- 2:28and forth ideiation together, you notice
- 2:30elements of rejected ideas being
- 2:32reinserted by AI. We call this kind of
- 2:36recognition process discernment, the
- 2:38ability to judge the quality and
- 2:39effectiveness of the AI's process. It's
- 2:42needed to ensure you and the AI are
- 2:44thinking in sync throughout the process,
- 2:46guiding the AI towards your vision for
- 2:50success. It becomes especially important
- 2:52for complex tasks where the correct
- 2:54answer isn't immediately obvious. In
- 2:56these situations, having trust in the
- 2:58process is
- 3:00everything. It's also often valuable to
- 3:03evaluate and guide how the AI behaves
- 3:05during your interaction. We call this
- 3:08performance discernment. The difference
- 3:10between process and performance is maybe
- 3:12a bit subtle. You can think of process
- 3:15as the work the AI is doing, while
- 3:17performance is how well it is
- 3:18interacting with you while it does the
- 3:20work. When evaluating an AI assistant's
- 3:23performance, you can ask yourself, is
- 3:25there a better way for the AI to
- 3:26communicate with you for greater ease
- 3:28and productivity going forward? Is it
- 3:31providing the information you need in a
- 3:33helpful way? Does it respond well to
- 3:35your feedback and direction? And is the
- 3:38interaction efficient or unnecessarily
- 3:41complex? For example, is the AI asking
- 3:43too many questions when you need concise
- 3:45answers, or is it too brief when you
- 3:46need comprehensive information? We call
- 3:49this performance discernment, the
- 3:51ability to judge the quality of the
- 3:53human AI interaction, which helps you
- 3:55shape more productive working engagement
- 3:57with the AI systems. Of course,
- 4:00discernment doesn't end with evaluation.
- 4:02You also need to provide feedback in
- 4:04order to improve what an AI delivers
- 4:06going forward. When you identify
- 4:08problems in AI outputs, effective
- 4:10feedback includes specifying what the
- 4:12problem is, clearly explaining why it is
- 4:14a problem, providing concrete
- 4:16suggestions for improvement and revising
- 4:19your instructions or examples. In other
- 4:21words, when discernment flags a problem,
- 4:24better description is often the
- 4:26solution. But this isn't always the
- 4:28case. Sometimes you may need to rethink
- 4:31your delegation decisions because you
- 4:33might be using the wrong tool or
- 4:34approaching the problem in entirely the
- 4:36wrong way. To recap, product process and
- 4:40performance discernment combine to form
- 4:43the discernment
- 4:44competency. Discernment works handinand
- 4:47with description. While description
- 4:49focuses on communicating your needs to
- 4:51AI, discernment evaluates how well those
- 4:54needs were met. Together, they form a
- 4:57continuous loop of instruction and
- 4:59evaluation that drives quality. By
- 5:01developing your discernment skills, you
- 5:03ensure that your AI collaboration
- 5:05remains guided by human judgment, a
- 5:08critical element of truly effective AI
- 5:10fluency.
