  1. 0:11Hi, my name is Rick Dacon from the
  2. 0:13Ringling College of Art and Design. Now
  3. 0:15that we've explored what AI fluency
  4. 0:17means and the different ways we interact
  5. 0:19with AI, let's dive into the core
  6. 0:21competencies that help us navigate AI
  7. 0:24collaboration effectively, efficiently,
  8. 0:26ethically, and safely.
  9. 0:29No matter how you're working with AI,
  10. 0:30whether through automation,
  11. 0:32augmentation, or agency, there are four
  12. 0:34essential competencies that make all the
  13. 0:37difference. We call them the four Ds:
  14. 0:41delegation, description, discernment,
  15. 0:43and diligence. First is delegation,
  16. 0:46which focuses on the big
  17. 0:49picture. What are you trying to
  18. 0:51accomplish? What kinds of work are
  19. 0:53involved? What work should you handle
  20. 0:55yourself? And where might AI be helpful?
  21. 0:58Think about a research project you're
  22. 1:00working on. You might decide to have
  23. 1:02your AI assistant review lengthy
  24. 1:04documents and data, then engage in a
  25. 1:06thoughtful discussion about the
  26. 1:07implications and findings, but reserve
  27. 1:10the critical analysis and final
  28. 1:11conclusions for
  29. 1:13yourself. To delegate effectively, you
  30. 1:16need to understand your goal and the
  31. 1:18problem you're solving. Recognize what
  32. 1:21AI can and can't do well. And lastly,
  33. 1:25thoughtfully divide the work between you
  34. 1:27and the
  35. 1:28AI. Delegation isn't just about
  36. 1:30offloading tasks. It's about having a
  37. 1:32clear vision and strategically choosing
  38. 1:34how AI fits into your process. This
  39. 1:38thoughtful approach is essential for
  40. 1:39both effective and efficient AI
  41. 1:43collaboration. Next comes description,
  42. 1:45which focuses on clear communication
  43. 1:47with AI. Consider the difference between
  44. 1:50vaguely stating, "Make me a logo."
  45. 1:53versus describing your company's values,
  46. 1:55target audience, preferred colors, style
  47. 1:57references, and so on. Or if you're
  48. 2:00using an AI as a tutor, you might take
  49. 2:02the extra step to specify, "Don't tell
  50. 2:04me the answer, just help me work through
  51. 2:06this problem step by step so I can
  52. 2:08better understand the concept."
  53. 2:10Description goes beyond just writing
  54. 2:12prompts. It's about having detailed,
  55. 2:14contextrich conversations that establish
  56. 2:18what you're hoping to achieve in the
  57. 2:20format of the output, how you want the
  58. 2:23AI to approach the task, the context and
  59. 2:26information that the AI might need to
  60. 2:28best work with you on this task, and the
  61. 2:31tone and style of interaction.
  62. 2:34Effective description means articulating
  63. 2:36your needs and vision in a way that sets
  64. 2:38up both you and the AI for greatest
  65. 2:41collaborative
  66. 2:43success. The third D is discernment,
  67. 2:46which involves thoughtfully evaluating
  68. 2:48what AI gives you. Let's say you've
  69. 2:51asked an AI assistant to suggest a
  70. 2:53marketing strategy. Your discernment
  71. 2:56comes into play as you assess, are the
  72. 2:58facts accurate? Does the reasoning make
  73. 3:01sense? Do the recommendations align with
  74. 3:04your brand values and audience? And most
  75. 3:06importantly, does this output actually
  76. 3:09help you move forward? Discernment draws
  77. 3:12upon your own expertise in a domain and
  78. 3:15requires developing the judgment and
  79. 3:16critical insight to separate what's
  80. 3:18useful from what's not and to recognize
  81. 3:20when AI outputs need refinement or
  82. 3:23should be set aside entirely. Most of
  83. 3:25our interactions with AI involve small
  84. 3:28loops of description and discernment,
  85. 3:30describing what we need, evaluating what
  86. 3:32we get, refining our request, and so on.
  87. 3:35We'll explore this more deeply later in
  88. 3:37the course. Finally, there's diligence,
  89. 3:40which focuses on responsible AI
  90. 3:42interactions.
  91. 3:44For example, if you are using AI to help
  92. 3:46write job descriptions or review
  93. 3:47applications, how are you ensuring
  94. 3:49fairness and controlling for potential
  95. 3:52biases? When making important decisions
  96. 3:55with AI assistance, how are you
  97. 3:57verifying the accuracy of the
  98. 3:59information presented to you? Are you
  99. 4:01protecting sensitive data? Have you
  100. 4:03considered how to be transparent about
  101. 4:05the involvement of AI? Are you willing
  102. 4:08to be accountable for the AI assisted
  103. 4:11work you have done?
  104. 4:13Diligence means taking ownership of your
  105. 4:15AI assisted work and being willing to
  106. 4:17stand behind final products created
  107. 4:19using AI. Diligence is critical for safe
  108. 4:23and ethical AI
  109. 4:26collaboration. To recap, AI fluency
  110. 4:29means developing practical skills,
  111. 4:31knowledge, insights, and values that
  112. 4:33help you use AI effectively,
  113. 4:34efficiently, ethically, and safely. AI
  114. 4:38fluency includes four key
  115. 4:40competencies. Delegation to decide when
  116. 4:43and how to use AI, description to
  117. 4:46communicate clearly with AI, discernment
  118. 4:49to evaluate AI outputs, and diligence to
  119. 4:52use AI responsibly. What makes these
  120. 4:55competencies so valuable is that they
  121. 4:57aren't tied to specific AI tools or
  122. 4:59techniques that might become outdated.
  123. 5:01Instead, they're fundamental skills that
  124. 5:04will help you adapt and grow alongside
  125. 5:06this rapidly evolving technology.
