- 0:17Hello friends, welcome back to lecture 2
- 0:21of module 12 of the stress management
- 0:24course. I'm your host Shubrasa and this
- 0:29section will take you to a tour of the
- 0:32basic life skills and how they f are
- 0:37proved to be beneficial for us.
- 0:42So basic life skills includes a bouquet
- 0:46of skills which can be implemented as
- 0:50and when required.
- 0:53First of them is called selfawwareness.
- 0:57This is basically being conscious about
- 1:00oneself
- 1:02through reflection or introspection.
- 1:06When I say that it is about being
- 1:09conscious of oneself means being aware
- 1:13of one's thoughts, intentions, emotions
- 1:18and their causes, their actual causes
- 1:21and their probable consequences.
- 1:25If we simply know about ourselves
- 1:28correctly, many of the problems of our
- 1:32life can be solved.
- 1:34The second skill of life is the critical
- 1:38thinking ability which involves
- 1:41reflective thinking to make decisions
- 1:45about what to believe or do.
- 1:49What should I believe? What should I
- 1:52not?
- 1:53Why should I work in a certain manner?
- 1:56Why should I comply with the command
- 1:59which is being given to me? And all
- 2:02these wise should be answered in a very
- 2:06logical manner.
- 2:08This logical thinking
- 2:11and removing of the ideas which are
- 2:15found illogical
- 2:18irrational is called critical thinking
- 2:22where I'm questioning my own thoughts
- 2:25and also my own way of thinking about a
- 2:28particular thing where I'm conscious
- 2:32about the reasons the logics on which I
- 2:36base my decision
- 2:38I base my thinking my principles.
- 2:42This particular thing is called critical
- 2:45thinking. So I am no way claiming that I
- 2:50am an uh you know person free of all
- 2:54kind of errors as a human being.
- 2:57Everybody is open to commit certain
- 3:00errors. But the important aspect is
- 3:05whether I accept that I am uh I can do
- 3:09certain errors. Whether I am conscious
- 3:12for looking my errors and then
- 3:15correcting them in future. If I'm
- 3:18behaving in this way, I am engaged in
- 3:21critical thinking. I'm not only uh
- 3:24thinking of the advantages of what I do
- 3:28or say but also the possible
- 3:30disadvantages. I also keep an eye over
- 3:34where I went wrong and I genuinely try
- 3:38to improve over this particular aspect.
- 3:42So taken together this thing is called
- 3:46critical thinking.
- 3:48Then creative thinking means am I able
- 3:52to do out ofthebox thinking means can I
- 3:56generate ideas and solutions which are
- 3:59not conventional rather innovative
- 4:02which makes them more suitable to solve
- 4:06problems of the current era which is in
- 4:09many ways different from the earlier
- 4:11times.
- 4:13If I do means I'll be able to provide
- 4:17more solutions during a brainstorming
- 4:20session. Whenever I'm thinking of a
- 4:22problem which needs to be solved,
- 4:26I can look at the situation from a f
- 4:29fresh perspective. I can get new
- 4:32insights from it that will help me
- 4:34greatly in solving that problem.
- 4:38So creative thinking also includes
- 4:41fluency, originality and elaboration of
- 4:46ideas. It requires resistance to closer
- 4:50or keeping an open mind. Means I don't
- 4:54want to close my thinking rather I want
- 4:57to keep it open and let the ideas flow
- 5:00to me from all directions out of which I
- 5:04can do some wonders by assimilating them
- 5:08by combining them in a new innovative
- 5:11way. Then decision making is another
- 5:15important skill and it is basically a
- 5:18process of identifying and choosing from
- 5:22different options. When there are more
- 5:24than one possibility
- 5:27existing
- 5:29uh for a particular issue
- 5:33for us it is sometimes difficult to
- 5:35select the correct one. This is called
- 5:38the process of decision making that out
- 5:41of all possible solutions which one I'm
- 5:44going to choose and why if I'm good at
- 5:48this exercise of course my life will be
- 5:52very much smooth but if I either dare
- 5:57either I fear making decisions so I
- 6:00simply push it towards other people or I
- 6:04take decisions in haste or I take
- 6:07decisions without proper planning and
- 6:10understanding of the thing. It may cause
- 6:13me a lot of stress in future.
- 6:18Problem solving is a closely related
- 6:21process where I utilized my knowledge
- 6:24and skills to manage unfamiliar
- 6:28situations.
- 6:30Uh this is of course not like following
- 6:33a set of algorithm that computers do but
- 6:37human minds can handle more complex
- 6:40manner uh problems than what we do with
- 6:44the help of computers
- 6:47and it requires
- 6:49a complicated way of thinking and
- 6:53thinking about the situation and
- 6:55utilizing the knowledge that we have.
- 6:59Next is effective communication.
- 7:02Nobody
- 7:04can be unaware of the importance of this
- 7:07particular part. Effective
- 7:08communication. So whenever we try to
- 7:12share our ideas with other people, how
- 7:14good we are in doing it. uh can I
- 7:20correctly convey my own thoughts, my
- 7:23ideas, my perceptions to others and
- 7:27correctly understand their ideas, their
- 7:32perspectives, their messages which they
- 7:35are sending to me.
- 7:38If this communication is effective, it
- 7:42is going to help us a lot in achieving
- 7:47success in life. Then comes the
- 7:50interpersonal relationships.
- 7:54Man is sometimes referred to as a social
- 7:58animal means something that cannot live
- 8:02in isolation.
- 8:04Wherever we live, we need people around
- 8:07us for a number of reasons. It is not
- 8:10only that they help us doing our task,
- 8:14but their presence is most of the time
- 8:18relaxing and assuring that somebody is
- 8:21there. It refreshes me. Whenever I get
- 8:24bored, I can simply walk and uh have a
- 8:27chat with my friends or people around
- 8:30me. So having interpersonal relationship
- 8:32is very important for emotion regulation
- 8:36for you know uh having a sense of
- 8:39reassurance and safety and belongingness
- 8:44and therefore
- 8:46initiating and maintaining relationship
- 8:49is also a kind of a skill one must have.
- 8:54Empathy is the next set of skill that we
- 8:57must have and it refers to the
- 9:00understanding and sharing the feeling of
- 9:03another person by putting oneself into
- 9:08his place or her place.
- 9:11This is simply means seeing the world
- 9:14from somebody else's perspective.
- 9:18Another
- 9:19life skill which is important is coping
- 9:24with stress. How much stress tolerance
- 9:26or coping strategies I have?
- 9:31Coping with emotions, whether I'm able
- 9:34to manage my emotion and manage my
- 9:37feeling, whether I know how to discharge
- 9:40them in a socially sanctioned way.
- 9:44And of course coping with the problem,
- 9:48coping with the situation also is a big
- 9:52skill which individuals require if they
- 9:56want to live a happy and contended life.
- 10:01What could be the consequence of
- 10:04employing these life skills in different
- 10:07domains of life? Well, we can have very
- 10:10explicit positive consequences
- 10:13like improved mental health. Our mental
- 10:17health will get improved due to this.
- 10:20The bonds that we share with other
- 10:22people will get strengthened by having
- 10:26this kind of tools in our behavioral
- 10:29repertoire.
- 10:31We can become more resilient that is
- 10:34able to tolerate more stress than
- 10:37before.
- 10:38And also I am capable of answering back.
- 10:43I'm capable of rising up again and again
- 10:47whenever I'm confronted with problems.
- 10:52Then the decision making ability
- 10:54improves
- 10:56and the confidence level also get boosts
- 11:01because of such life skills.
- 11:06So this was all about the summary of
- 11:10life skills and some of them will be
- 11:14elaborated separately in the upcoming
- 11:18lectures.
- 11:20So here is a quick recap which says that
- 11:23in this module we have learned about
- 11:26basic set of life skills which includes
- 11:29a number of skills like self-awareness,
- 11:32critical thinking, creative thinking,
- 11:35decision making and problem solving,
- 11:37effective communication, interpersonal
- 11:40relationships and so on. And we also
- 11:44uh discuss some of their positive
- 11:47effects on life.
- 11:50Here is the list of recommended readings
- 11:53for you.
- 11:57Keep going through the list.
- 12:01Thank you very much for your patient
- 12:03listening. Thank you.
