  1. 0:16Namaskar friends. I'm Shubhra Sha your

  4. 0:27management course.
  5. 0:29In this series, we are talking about the
  6. 0:33causes and consequences of unsafe,
  7. 0:37irregulated
  8. 0:39and excessive use of internet.
  9. 0:43In this series, we have already
  10. 0:45discussed about some significant
  11. 0:48problems like internet addiction, selfie
  12. 0:51addiction, nomophobia.
  13. 0:54We also talked about gaming addiction
  14. 0:57and now we are going to discuss a
  15. 1:00problem which is surfacing quite quickly
  16. 1:04and is already very pre prevalent in our
  17. 1:07society known as gambling addiction.
  18. 1:12So let us see what is online gambling.
  19. 1:16What are the main causes and
  20. 1:18consequences of being indulged in online
  21. 1:22gambling behavior and how this unsafe
  22. 1:26behavior can be managed to minimize the
  23. 1:30financial and other forms of risk
  24. 1:34associated with it.
  25. 1:38Friends, online gaming is basically a
  26. 1:42practice of placing bets or wagers on
  27. 1:46games of chance or skills using the
  28. 1:50internet.
  29. 1:52The same thing that used to be done
  30. 1:55physically
  31. 1:56is now being done virtually by using
  32. 2:01various internet platforms.
  33. 2:05So when we start playing online games or
  34. 2:10we start getting indulged in betting
  35. 2:13behavior using internet or computer or
  36. 2:16smartphone.
  37. 2:18The kind of activities that we can do
  38. 2:24are of wider range as compared we as
  39. 2:28compared to what we can do physically
  40. 2:31and of course they involve greater risk
  41. 2:35for our future as well.
  42. 2:39There are different types of online
  43. 2:42gambling that one can do. The most
  44. 2:45popular is sports betting.
  45. 2:48Sports betting allows people to wage for
  46. 2:53various events of sports
  47. 2:56happening at bigger level like national
  48. 3:00and international tournaments.
  49. 3:03And these events can include football
  50. 3:06matches, basketball matches, tennis
  51. 3:10matches or even cricket
  52. 3:13which is very popular in India.
  53. 3:16So which team will win is the question
  54. 3:21and then people start betting in favor
  55. 3:24of their favorite teams.
  56. 3:27This can elab include elaborate analysis
  57. 3:31of previous outcomes or the previous
  58. 3:34performances of the team and sometimes
  59. 3:38people very systematically
  60. 3:42bet for a particular team. Similarly,
  61. 3:47another form of online gambling is
  62. 3:50casino behaviors or casino games. So the
  63. 3:54kind of games which are played in
  64. 3:56casinos can be played on virtual
  65. 4:01platforms also. These may include slots,
  66. 4:05roulette or blackjack.
  67. 4:08Poker is another popular online game
  68. 4:11including gambling behavior.
  69. 4:15Then the lotteryies are now being played
  70. 4:20or purchased on online platforms.
  71. 4:24So the tickets which were sold and
  72. 4:27bought by people physically earlier are
  73. 4:30now available on virtual platforms and
  74. 4:33they can be bought uh through these
  75. 4:36online platforms.
  76. 4:39So these are the different forms of
  77. 4:41gaming behavior which are uh quite
  78. 4:43common but there are several others also
  79. 4:47and uh sometimes they include the use of
  80. 4:50cryptocurrencies or many different other
  81. 4:53kind of currencies which may or may not
  82. 4:56be legally sanctioned in the country in
  83. 4:59which the person plays such games. So uh
  84. 5:03one has to be very careful while
  85. 5:05indulging in these kind of behaviors.
  86. 5:08Now what are the risk associated with
  87. 5:10online gambling? The very first risk is
  88. 5:14addiction.
  89. 5:15People get quickly addicted to this
  90. 5:18betting behavior because there is a
  91. 5:20constant hope of gain.
  92. 5:24No matter I lost this time I can win win
  93. 5:28the next bet. So this expectation
  94. 5:32make them addicted to gambling behaviors
  95. 5:37which are performed online.
  96. 5:41Then the biggest consequence is related
  97. 5:45with the financial condition of the
  98. 5:48player.
  99. 5:49If one keeps on losing and cannot
  100. 5:53withdraw oneself from gambling,
  101. 5:57there can be financial troubles which
  102. 6:01can lead to debt and instability in
  103. 6:04life.
  104. 6:08One must be aware of the fact that the
  105. 6:12absence of legal remedies or regulations
  106. 6:15for online gaming can increase the
  107. 6:19potential for scams or unethical
  108. 6:22activities in such games.
  109. 6:26Then online ga gaming can lead to
  110. 6:30problematic gaming also. Problematic
  111. 6:33gaming means where an individual start
  112. 6:38to start chasing his losses and bet
  113. 6:42beyond their limits. No matter I lost
  114. 6:45two bets, I will win the third one and
  115. 6:49this will be so big that it is going to
  116. 6:52compensate for all losses whatever I had
  117. 6:55met before. So problematic gambling
  118. 6:58behavior is another thing that we
  119. 7:01frequently observe in such conditions.
  120. 7:05If I talk about the causes, of course,
  121. 7:08it is a kind of uh pleasant experience
  122. 7:12for those who do it. So it is associated
  123. 7:16with dopamine release as other form of
  124. 7:19addictive behaviors are also found.
  125. 7:22It also gives an escape from negative
  126. 7:25emotions like stress, hardships or
  127. 7:28anxiety. And sometimes people also try
  128. 7:32to do it as an alternative earning
  129. 7:35mechanism. If they do not have a proper
  130. 7:39earning mechanism or their earnings are
  131. 7:42not enough to support their family, what
  132. 7:45happens that they start playing games or
  133. 7:50they start online gambling so that they
  134. 7:53can earn more money to support their
  135. 7:55family and because they start with a
  136. 7:58very genuine and noble and benign cause
  137. 8:01they don't find a need to regulate
  138. 8:04themselves. They start with small
  139. 8:07amounts. Usually they win initially
  140. 8:11because the initial levels are easier
  141. 8:14because the initial levels they provide
  142. 8:17more opportunity to win and as they win
  143. 8:20win and win small small amounts they
  144. 8:23quickly sinks into the addiction of
  145. 8:27gambling behavior. So it can also serve
  146. 8:31as an alternative earning mechanism. So
  147. 8:34providing a relief from the
  148. 8:36unpleasantness of one's life or meeting
  149. 8:40the ends in a better way. Then it can
  150. 8:43also be a sensation seeking behavior.
  151. 8:46Simply because I like adventure, simply
  152. 8:49because I like stimulation in my life, I
  153. 8:53can indulge in gambling which is done
  154. 8:56through online platforms.
  155. 9:00Environmental factors can also be
  156. 9:02responsible for encouraging people to
  157. 9:07get involved in gambling. For example,
  158. 9:10easy accessibility
  159. 9:12and the simple and easy nature of
  160. 9:16gambling behavior available on
  161. 9:18platforms.
  162. 9:20They enable individuals to gamble at any
  163. 9:23time from any location and to start with
  164. 9:28any small amount as small as one rupees.
  165. 9:32Some games allow betting one rupee only.
  166. 9:36So if somebody somebody is betting
  167. 9:38against one rupee, the person finds no
  168. 9:41threat in that without realizing that if
  169. 9:44the person continues with this kind of
  170. 9:46behavior, he or she will not realize
  171. 9:50when this one rupee will be converted
  172. 9:52into 100 and then 1,000 and 10,000. So
  173. 9:56this ease of starting this uh apparently
  174. 10:01safe behavior or safe environment in
  175. 10:04which the person starts gambling gives
  176. 10:08him a kickstart and push him towards
  177. 10:12such behaviors in future.
  178. 10:15The marketing and advertising of online
  179. 10:18gambling tools.
  180. 10:21What is done by their operators
  181. 10:24is also responsible for attracting
  182. 10:28people towards such kind of behavior.
  183. 10:31They mostly use very attractive
  184. 10:34sometimes aggressive marketing
  185. 10:36strategies and they keep changing their
  186. 10:39advertisement tactics so that the people
  187. 10:44should not get bored or they should not
  188. 10:46get habituated rather uh they keep on
  189. 10:49offering new rewards to people who
  190. 10:52gamble on their platforms. So marketing
  191. 10:55strategies are also very important.
  192. 10:58Similarly, social influences where one
  193. 11:01find the friends and other family
  194. 11:03members also doing gambling online
  195. 11:07gambling. So one can uh then one can
  196. 11:10also feel encouraged to do the same kind
  197. 11:12of thing. So if there are events or
  198. 11:15incidences like that within the family,
  199. 11:18one can feel encouraged to get indulged
  200. 11:21in similar behavior.
  201. 11:24Then there are a lot of individual
  202. 11:27factors also which are responsible for
  203. 11:30promoting gambling behavior in people.
  204. 11:33For example, people having certain
  205. 11:35personality traits like impulsivity or
  206. 11:39competitiveness or risk takingaking has
  207. 11:43have a great likelihood in being
  208. 11:46involved in gambling behaviors and get
  209. 11:50addicted to them. Similarly, cognitive
  210. 11:53biases such as gamblers's fallacy.
  211. 11:56Gamblers's fallacy means an expectation
  212. 11:58that the person is going to win the next
  213. 12:01bet. So, every time they lose they
  214. 12:05increase the amount in the expectation
  215. 12:07that the next time they will surely win
  216. 12:10and the gain would be so big so that all
  217. 12:14the losses can be compensated. This
  218. 12:17particular mindset in which the person
  219. 12:20is constantly striving for victory and
  220. 12:23is pretty sure about his win next time
  221. 12:28is known as gamblers's fallacy or
  222. 12:31confirmation bias. Right? So this
  223. 12:34cognitive bias can also result in
  224. 12:37irrational decision making and higher
  225. 12:40levels of risk-taking behavior during
  226. 12:43gambling.
  227. 12:45If a person lacks self-control,
  228. 12:49uh he or she can find himself or herself
  229. 12:54submerged with gambling behavior and it
  230. 12:58may be very difficult for them to manage
  231. 13:01their online gambling habits.
  232. 13:04Other factors include the gaming design
  233. 13:08which are intentionally kept very
  234. 13:11attractive and captivating by
  235. 13:13incorporating levels and rewards and
  236. 13:17appraisals and social pressures. So that
  237. 13:20one should not be able to leave them
  238. 13:23easily unless the one is having very
  239. 13:26high level of determination.
  240. 13:29If we don't have determination of that
  241. 13:32extent, we will definitely continue
  242. 13:35under the influences of such lucrative
  243. 13:38offers which are provided by the
  244. 13:41operators of these gambling
  245. 13:44uh platforms.
  246. 13:46Uh many areas uh we lack legal remedies
  247. 13:50or regulations. You know then these lack
  248. 13:54of uh legal provisions make it difficult
  249. 13:58to claim anything against what has
  250. 14:01happened in a gambling platforms and it
  251. 14:05also increases the risk of problematic
  252. 14:08gambling behavior. It makes it difficult
  253. 14:11to find remedies of anything unethical
  254. 14:15if happened during gambling.
  255. 14:19Financial problems are definitely the
  256. 14:22primary consequence of unsafe gambling
  257. 14:26behaviors
  258. 14:27which can lead to severe consequences
  259. 14:31like debt and bankruptcy. Also,
  260. 14:35mental health issues are inevitable
  261. 14:39in such circumstances.
  262. 14:42The person who is addicted to gambling
  263. 14:44behavior and is facing financial
  264. 14:47troubles quickly develop symptoms like
  265. 14:52anxiety, stress and depression.
  266. 14:56Relationships also get strained as a
  267. 14:59result of this gambling behavior and
  268. 15:02strained financial
  269. 15:05u aspects which one faces. People get
  270. 15:10socially disconnected because they uh
  271. 15:13utilize most of their time in online
  272. 15:17gambling instead of socializing and
  273. 15:20participating in social events.
  274. 15:26However, certain management
  275. 15:30practices can be applied to improve the
  276. 15:33situation in which the first one is
  277. 15:36known as selfexclusion.
  278. 15:39Meaning to decide to exclude oneself
  279. 15:43from online gambling behavior. to decide
  280. 15:47not to participate in any kind of
  281. 15:50gambling behavior in present or in
  282. 15:54future and implement this decision with
  283. 15:58strictness and determination with
  284. 16:01immediate effect instead of waiting for
  285. 16:04some future time to come when one will
  286. 16:08uh get away from such gambling
  287. 16:10behaviors.
  288. 16:13uh there are provisions available
  289. 16:16uh on online gaming sites which gives an
  290. 16:19option of self-exclusion. So those
  291. 16:22self-exclusion options can be utilized.
  292. 16:26Then one can think of getting connected
  293. 16:30with support groups like gamblers
  294. 16:33anonymous.
  295. 16:35These groups can provide individuals a
  296. 16:38sense of solidarity and encouragement
  297. 16:42who are trying to get away from gambling
  298. 16:46addiction.
  299. 16:49Seeking professional counseling is a
  300. 16:51good option to try.
  301. 16:54Uh here the counselor or the therapist
  302. 16:57along with the person who is suffering
  303. 16:59from gambling addiction can work to
  304. 17:02explore the core issues which have
  305. 17:06pushed the person towards unsafe
  306. 17:09gambling behavior and try to remove
  307. 17:13those core factors.
  308. 17:16One can also learn more about
  309. 17:19responsible gaming practices by limiting
  310. 17:23the monetary expenditures in each bet.
  311. 17:27For example, one can set the limit of
  312. 17:30how much money will be spent in each
  313. 17:34bet. Uh it may be five rupees, it may be
  314. 17:3710 rupees. So the amount is uh within
  315. 17:41limits of the individual instead of
  316. 17:45leaving it to an impulsive decision
  317. 17:48where one can bet against the amount
  318. 17:51whatever comes to his or her mind which
  319. 17:54is very risky because once one once a
  320. 17:57person get addicted to it he or she can
  321. 18:00bet against any amount without having
  322. 18:03any control over it.
  323. 18:06That's all for today's lecture.
  324. 18:09Let us review what we have learned
  325. 18:12today.
  326. 18:13We have learned that online gambling is
  327. 18:16a practice of placing bets or wagers on
  328. 18:20games of chance or skill done through an
  329. 18:24online platform. There are many types of
  330. 18:28online gambling available.
  331. 18:31for example, sports betting, casino
  332. 18:34games, poker, and lotteryies.
  333. 18:38The consequences of online gambling
  334. 18:41behavior can be serious and it may
  335. 18:45include financial burdens which can lead
  336. 18:49a person to debt or bankruptcy leading
  337. 18:52to relationship strains, mental health
  338. 18:56issues and many difficulties
  339. 18:59regarding the legal aspects. Also,
  340. 19:03one should use techniques like
  341. 19:06self-exclusion,
  342. 19:08joining support groups and endorsing to
  343. 19:12professional counseling and responsible
  344. 19:15gambling practices in order to manage
  345. 19:18the risk factor associated with online
  346. 19:22gambling.
  347. 19:24Here are the references that can be used
  348. 19:27for further reading.
  349. 19:31Few more references.
  350. 19:35The list goes on.
  351. 19:38Thank you very much for your patient
  352. 19:40listening. Thank you.
