- 0:32our lives and the kind of consequences
- 0:36it can produce on our mental health.
- 0:40We will try to review different kind of
- 0:43social media platforms, different kind
- 0:46of activities that one can perform on
- 0:49these virtual platforms, and how these
- 0:53activities can enrich or endanger our
- 0:58lives.
- 0:59Along with the remedial measures that
- 1:02can be taken in order to limit the
- 1:06harmful impacts of these tools.
- 1:09Let us begin with today's lecture.
- 1:12This is a quick recap of what we are
- 1:15going to study in this module.
- 1:19In lecture one of module eight, we will
- 1:22begin with discussing about what social
- 1:25media is,
- 1:27different types of social media
- 1:29platforms and their usage,
- 1:32their impact on our life,
- 1:34their advantages and disadvantages.
- 1:40So basically, social media encompasses
- 1:44digital platforms that can be used to
- 1:47empower individuals to generate,
- 1:50distribute, and engage with contents,
- 1:54while also fostering virtual
- 1:57relationship with others.
- 2:01Different types of social media
- 2:03platforms are operating nowadays, which
- 2:07include
- 2:08Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, which
- 2:11offers a space for users to connect and
- 2:15share update with others.
- 2:17And these types of platforms are called
- 2:20social networking sites.
- 2:24Then come the visual-centric platforms
- 2:27like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat
- 2:32that prioritize the visual content
- 2:36like photos and videos to be shared with
- 2:39others.
- 2:42There are several blogging platforms
- 2:45also, such as WordPress, Tumblr.
- 2:49What happens with these platforms that
- 2:52you can write blogs or microblogs about
- 2:55a particular issue, and then these blogs
- 2:59can be a useful way, a convenient way
- 3:03for users to create and share written
- 3:06content about a particular theme.
- 3:11No doubt, this social media has impacted
- 3:15our life in a great way.
- 3:18This can be used for building
- 3:20relationship with others.
- 3:23Of course, we can make more distant
- 3:27relationships as we can do ever before
- 3:31with the power of social media.
- 3:34We cannot meet everyone in person.
- 3:38We cannot meet everyone through our kith
- 3:41and kin network as well.
- 3:43So, this virtual world
- 3:46allows us to connect with people living
- 3:50in far and distant places, gather
- 3:53informations from all corners of the
- 3:56world. And it would be apt if I say that
- 3:59it has brought the whole world at our
- 4:02doorstep.
- 4:05This can also be used to spread
- 4:08information quickly across the globe.
- 4:13Broadcasting it to a large group of
- 4:15audience simultaneously.
- 4:18These platforms are very much used for
- 4:21self-expression.
- 4:23We all see how people write their
- 4:27opinions and attitudes about a number of
- 4:30things that are happening
- 4:32on X, on Instagram, on Twitter. So, this
- 4:36becomes a kind of self-expression
- 4:40platform, also.
- 4:42By expressing themselves, sometimes they
- 4:44can create new insights or they can just
- 4:48become aware of how other people are
- 4:50thinking about the same thing. So, in a
- 4:53way, it helps in building consent over
- 4:56an issue, also.
- 4:58However, there is a big mental health
- 5:01concern associated with it.
- 5:04Because every time what we express and
- 5:08how we express may not be suitable for
- 5:12the psychological health of other
- 5:15people.
- 5:17It can create a lot of anxiety and
- 5:19depression in people
- 5:22where they get very harsh comments from
- 5:25others.
- 5:27Let us discuss a bit more about the
- 5:30advantages and disadvantages of social
- 5:33media.
- 5:35Advantages first.
- 5:38So, if I try to jot down the benefits of
- 5:41using social media, the first thing that
- 5:44comes to my mind is it helps in
- 5:46community building.
- 5:48We can relate with other people of
- 5:51similar attitude, similar thought,
- 5:54having similar views on issues.
- 5:57We can connect with people suffering
- 6:00from same kind of problems as we are
- 6:02facing in our lives.
- 6:05This gives us a feel of belongingness.
- 6:08This gives us a source of gathering
- 6:11important information about the problems
- 6:14or issues of our life, which would
- 6:18otherwise have not been possible.
- 6:21So, it provides large networking
- 6:25opportunities to people
- 6:28at professional level also,
- 6:30which is instrumental for the growth of
- 6:33their career.
- 6:37It provides access to all sort of
- 6:40information and endless source of
- 6:42information.
- 6:44Then, it also helps in creative
- 6:47expressions like uh memes or other form
- 6:52of creativity which we usually observe
- 6:54on social media.
- 6:56So, it supports creative expression
- 6:59also.
- 7:01However,
- 7:02these advantages cannot completely
- 7:06counter the drawbacks or disadvantages
- 7:10of social media
- 7:12that we are experiencing nowadays and
- 7:15which is increasing day by day.
- 7:19The first thing
- 7:21as an disadvantage of social media is
- 7:25addiction.
- 7:26Means excessive, uncontrolled,
- 7:30unregulated use of social media,
- 7:34which occupies most of the time, most of
- 7:38the productive time of our day.
- 7:42Thereby leaving us with very little time
- 7:45to perform important tasks.
- 7:49And also it consumes most of our
- 7:52cognitive resources. So we are
- 7:54completely absorbed in that virtual
- 7:57world.
- 7:58Forgetting about the real world around
- 8:01us in which we stay.
- 8:04Our priorities do change. Our
- 8:07preferences, our interests do change.
- 8:10And many it can lead to changes in our
- 8:13personality also.
- 8:15We start prioritizing virtual
- 8:18relationships over the real ones.
- 8:22And it shows significant considerable
- 8:26withdrawal symptoms when a person
- 8:29addicted to the use of social media is
- 8:32not allowed to do so.
- 8:35So addiction is the first and foremost
- 8:37problem which we see with the use of
- 8:40social media which is growing day by day
- 8:44and it has become so prevalent and so
- 8:47pronounced that now it is a part of the
- 8:50list of
- 8:51disease shared by World Health
- 8:53Organization.
- 8:55Many new disorders have popped up which
- 8:58are linked with this kind of
- 9:01uncontrolled usage of social media.
- 9:05Another big threat is cyberbullying.
- 9:09Just like we see the activities of
- 9:13bullying and harassment in real life.
- 9:16Similar activities can be conducted
- 9:19online also through these virtual
- 9:21platforms.
- 9:23Therefore you find people feeling
- 9:26harassed
- 9:27when they post something, when they
- 9:29share something and a lot of criticism,
- 9:32a lot of bullying suddenly starts
- 9:34happening.
- 9:37It can also increase crimes like cyber
- 9:41arrest, cyber fraud. So, having cyber
- 9:45security in our
- 9:47digital life is a big issue which we all
- 9:51are dealing with.
- 9:55Another important drawback of social
- 9:57media platforms is misinformation.
- 10:02Because it is a very quick and effective
- 10:05tool of spreading information.
- 10:08If anything
- 10:09biased, misleading, false is posted on
- 10:13social media, that also gets circulated
- 10:17very quickly.
- 10:19Most of the people do not take a minute
- 10:22to check the validity of the information
- 10:25and simply forward it to other people.
- 10:30The issue gets serious
- 10:32even more when the information is
- 10:35arousing in certain manner, maybe
- 10:38emotionally or it carries some sensitive
- 10:41information about a group of people,
- 10:44an individual, or about institutions.
- 10:49Spreading of such false informations
- 10:52among mass of people
- 10:55leads to disbelief towards the
- 10:58institutions of the society, of the
- 11:01government.
- 11:02And sometimes it creates a situation of
- 11:05intergroup conflict which can be very
- 11:09intense.
- 11:10Therefore, we see that whenever there is
- 11:14a state of conflict, a state of riot, a
- 11:17state of insurgency
- 11:19in our country, the first thing that
- 11:22government does is to
- 11:25uh cut off the internet connections for
- 11:28some time. For 2 or 3 days, all the
- 11:32internet connections get slowed down
- 11:35very much and their speed is greatly
- 11:38reduced so that the person cannot use it
- 11:40effectively, cannot forward messages
- 11:43through it.
- 11:45Another important aspect is
- 11:49constant comparison and competitiveness,
- 11:52which gradually comes in with excessive
- 11:55use of social media.
- 11:58>> [snorts]
- 11:59>> Through social media, individuals may
- 12:02constantly compare themselves to others,
- 12:05which may instill a feeling of
- 12:08inferiority, inadequacy, and stress in
- 12:11them.
- 12:13Without realizing that much of what we
- 12:16post on social media is edited and
- 12:19intentionally crafted, people can
- 12:22compare their real-life situations with
- 12:25those of others
- 12:27through the posts and the status updates
- 12:31they do.
- 12:33Again, it becomes a kind of problem for
- 12:37us.
- 12:38So, these were significant drawbacks
- 12:42related with social media that all of us
- 12:46are facing nowadays.
- 12:49We will see some more in the upcoming
- 12:53lectures.
- 12:55Till then, these are the references that
- 12:58you can go through to enhance your
- 13:01understanding about the subject matter.
- 13:07And we will see each other in lecture
- 13:10two.
- 13:11Thank you very much for your kind
- 13:13attention.
