Full transcript
- 0:00hello again and welcome once more to
- 0:01this the third video in our series of
- 0:03educational tutorials for the knowledge
- 0:05of london
- 0:11my name is dean warrington and what
- 0:12we're going to do today is show you
- 0:14exactly how to find and learn points as
- 0:16a beginner once you've completed your
- 0:17blue book runs
- 0:18this video starts with a previous video
- 0:20the definitive guide to learning blue
- 0:22book left off
- 0:23but before we start let's recap on where
- 0:25you should be right now
- 0:30if all of your bluebook runs are
- 0:31finished you should now be calling 80
- 0:33runs
- 0:33each day in around one hour or less
- 0:36break that into two 30-minute slots
- 0:39the 30-minute slots is a very important
- 0:41aspect and more important than most
- 0:42people realize always study for set
- 0:45amounts of time
- 0:46and if you are studying on your own
- 0:47always have a break after 30 minutes
- 0:50if you're studying in a pair then have a
- 0:51break after one hour
- 0:53now if you're calling 30 runs in 30
- 0:55minutes you are at the lower end of the
- 0:57scale but it's just
- 0:58acceptable but you must not be calling
- 1:00lower than that
- 1:01if you are then that's something you
- 1:03need to work on immediately to raise
- 1:04your standard
- 1:06the way to raise the standard is to work
- 1:08in blocks of 10 to 16 runs
- 1:11take the first 10 runs and call them
- 1:14time yourself and write the amount you
- 1:16called down
- 1:17if you were slower than 10 runs in 10
- 1:18minutes then call the same
- 1:20set again and time yourself again and
- 1:23try to beat your previous time
- 1:25once you succeed then make sure you call
- 1:27that group of 10 to 16 runs every day
- 1:30in 10 minutes but now start working on
- 1:32the next group to bring that
- 1:34up to standard keep going like this
- 1:36until you have all the sets up to a
- 1:37reasonable to good standard
- 1:39so in a nutshell 60 runs an hour is the
- 1:42lowest standard you want to be at
- 1:4480 runs an hour is steady and reasonable
- 1:4780 runs in 30 minutes is excellent
- 1:50there is one major advantage to calling
- 1:53quickly and that is
- 1:54that it frees up time for you to study
- 1:57and focus on
- 1:58other things you do not need to call
- 2:00more than 80 runs a day
- 2:06as a beginner to pointing the biggest
- 2:08problem that occurs is organization
- 2:10how do you organize all these points how
- 2:12do you choose which ones to visit and
- 2:14most importantly
- 2:15how do you revise them this is where wiz
- 2:17radius app and large radius map books
- 2:19come into their own
- 2:20they take care of all of the
- 2:22organization and allow you to just focus
- 2:24on the important factor of finding and
- 2:26remembering
- 2:27as many points as possible when you buy
- 2:29the large radius map books
- 2:31in paper form we provide the equivalent
- 2:33wiz radius app book for free
- 2:35once you have these you are ready to go
- 2:37and start pointing
- 2:38the large radius map books will show you
- 2:40the radius maps in geographical order
- 2:42and correspond and match the
- 2:43geographical order in the wiz radius app
- 2:47you can use the wiz radius app as a
- 2:48standalone method or
- 2:50in conjunction with the paper version
- 2:53personally i would use the app version
- 2:56on my tablet without the paper version
- 2:58you can use a strong velcro to fix the
- 3:00tablet to your knowledge board and
- 3:01you're ready to go
- 3:03i understand that some people are uneasy
- 3:06doing that so in that case you will need
- 3:08the paper version
- 3:09and you can use the paper version on
- 3:10your board and keep your tablet with you
- 3:12for constant revision which will be
- 3:14necessary for the purpose of this video
- 3:17i'm going to show you the method of
- 3:18using the whiz radius app
- 3:21in conjunction with large radius paper
- 3:23versions
- 3:24all the advice in this video remains the
- 3:26same if you choose as i would to use the
- 3:28wiz radius app without the paper version
- 3:34open your wiz radius app and select
- 3:36geographical maps
- 3:38the blue book map section is for
- 3:39students that wish to do the points
- 3:41whilst doing the runs
- 3:43select that if you're doing that method
- 3:45but we're not going to cover that as i
- 3:46don't recommend you do points whilst
- 3:48you're doing your runs at all
- 3:50once you've selected the geographical
- 3:52maps you will see the very first map
- 3:53surrey street there are eight points on
- 3:55this map
- 3:56that's not all the points in this
- 3:58quarter my radius but as you will see in
- 4:00the next few maps you are going to be in
- 4:01this area for at least a day
- 4:03picking up a lot more points but start
- 4:05with one map at a time
- 4:07now from these eight points which ones
- 4:09should you find
- 4:11if you look to the right the point
- 4:13listing you'll see a number
- 4:15this is the number of times this point
- 4:17has been asked
- 4:18all of the points on this list have been
- 4:20asked more than 20 times
- 4:22but that's not the whole story what you
- 4:24also want to know
- 4:25is is that point being asked recently or
- 4:28in the past year
- 4:30so for this we need to return briefly to
- 4:31the home screen here we need to set the
- 4:34filters to eliminate the points that we
- 4:36feel
- 4:36do not have a great value at the present
- 4:38time to do that we need to make the
- 4:40times ask filter set
- 4:42to between 20 25 or 50 times asked or
- 4:45more
- 4:46now this part is up to you to decide for
- 4:48me personally i would choose 20 times
- 4:51asked and think about raising to 25 or
- 4:5450 at a later date
- 4:56based on the speed of my progress if i'm
- 4:58getting along fine then it will remain
- 5:00at 20 times asked or more
- 5:02the next filter is last asked and for
- 5:05this
- 5:05i would set it to everything asked in
- 5:07the last 12 months
- 5:09i most certainly would never select ever
- 5:12and i would only use six month option
- 5:14when revising as for the point level
- 5:17option
- 5:18it must remain set to all the options
- 5:20here are
- 5:21only for revision purposes not pointing
- 5:24once you've set the filters
- 5:25you're ready to go with the app so you
- 5:27now need to mark up your paper version
- 5:29to make them match
- 5:34with your app showing map 1 with the
- 5:36filter set to 20 times asked in the last
- 5:39year
- 5:39you will see four letters marking five
- 5:42points
- 5:43there are two points under letter c
- 5:44which is the london hotel
- 5:46and the radio rooftop bar you need to
- 5:49highlight these points
- 5:50on your paper version if you're using
- 5:52the app you can skip this bit and go
- 5:54straight
- 5:55out with the ipad on your board find
- 5:58point a
- 5:59on the paper version and highlight it
- 6:01also
- 6:02highlight the point name in the list
- 6:04below and now do the same with points d
- 6:08c and e once you've done this your final
- 6:12job is to decide the order to visit them
- 6:13in
- 6:14you do not visit them in alphabetical
- 6:16order as i've found some students trying
- 6:18to do in the past
- 6:19but rather point them in geographical
- 6:21order
- 6:22because i will be coming from the east
- 6:24my first point to visit will be point a
- 6:26coincidentally if i were coming from the
- 6:29west then my first point would be point
- 6:30c
- 6:32after a i will go to d then c
- 6:36and finish with e you will notice that
- 6:39you may be driving past other points
- 6:41listed on your radius maps that are not
- 6:43marked to be visited
- 6:45in these instances it's okay to look and
- 6:47make a small mental recognition
- 6:49but don't make any real effort to
- 6:51remember them other than to allow your
- 6:53subconscious to absorb whatever it does
- 6:55naturally
- 6:56if you try to learn and remember them
- 6:58you will reduce the volume of points you
- 7:00are intended on pointing that were asked
- 7:03more recently and with a higher
- 7:05frequency
- 7:06never forget you have a maximum capacity
- 7:08for a certain volume of points each day
- 7:11and that should be filled with important
- 7:13things first
- 7:14without creating any extra journey time
- 7:21the biggest question for you to assess
- 7:24at this stage
- 7:25is how many points per day should you
- 7:27point
- 7:28the answer is very dependent on your
- 7:30ability determination and amount of
- 7:32available free time
- 7:34students very often overlook the
- 7:36allowance of revision time
- 7:38on top of your bike work time 30 to 50
- 7:41points a day
- 7:42is a similar volume of information to
- 7:44four blue book runs
- 7:45if you point 30 to 50 points in your
- 7:48allocated bike time remember to allow
- 7:50for an hour revision of those points
- 7:53if you are efficient you may not need
- 7:54the whole hour to achieve your desired
- 7:56standard but revision
- 7:57and how you revise is the fundamental
- 8:00secret to remembering
- 8:01large amounts of points quickly
- 8:04you must revise when you're out on the
- 8:06road and i will show you how in the next
- 8:08section of this video
- 8:10in the first four maps once you have
- 8:12filtered out the ones with a low
- 8:13possibility of being asked
- 8:15there will be 48 points to find
- 8:19it doesn't matter if you do not complete
- 8:21all 48 as they will be in sequence
- 8:23that can be stopped and started again
- 8:25anytime
- 8:27the early maps are around the west end
- 8:28and city which is by far the most
- 8:30popular place for points to be asked in
- 8:33as you get to the outer maps it becomes
- 8:35less dense and you may find yourself
- 8:36doing 30 maps in a day
- 8:38with only 30 points spread between them
- 8:41so do as many points in a day as you can
- 8:44manage
- 8:45but follow the revision technique to
- 8:47allow maximum
- 8:48absorption
- 8:53once you've prepared your large radius
- 8:54paper maps
- 8:56up to around 30 to 50 points worth and
- 8:58you've prepared your app
- 9:00you're now ready to go out pointing once
- 9:03you're out on your bike
- 9:04heading for your first point remember to
- 9:06drive slowly and take care
- 9:08if you miss the point don't react
- 9:10quickly just drive past and
- 9:12figure out a way back this will enhance
- 9:14your memories
- 9:15that you're trying to develop and these
- 9:17memories are by far the most important
- 9:19aspect of your day
- 9:20on this particular point missing it
- 9:22means you will need to come back around
- 9:24temple place
- 9:25and what is learnt here is that you are
- 9:27now creating a memory
- 9:28of turning right out of temple place
- 9:30into victoria embankment and you will
- 9:32get perfect access to hqs wellington
- 9:35it's always a good idea to take a moment
- 9:37to look and think about the point
- 9:39if you need to then a small piece of
- 9:41research and investigation will enhance
- 9:43your memory in this instance maybe you
- 9:46should wonder why is it called hqs
- 9:49hqs stands for headquarters ship
- 9:52knowing that will make remembering this
- 9:54point easier
- 9:56now open your app mark the point as
- 9:58visited by tapping its corresponding
- 10:00letter
- 10:02that's it now get back on your bike and
- 10:04head to your next point on your list
- 10:08when you arrive follow a similar
- 10:10procedure each time
- 10:12the more advanced you become the quicker
- 10:14this aspect becomes
- 10:16roman bath is a very interesting point
- 10:18when the gates are open you'll go
- 10:19through the very victorian looking alley
- 10:22turn right at the end and turn on a
- 10:24light switch on the wall to illuminate
- 10:26an
- 10:26old roman bath ruin if you take the time
- 10:30to do this
- 10:31you'll never forget this point once
- 10:33again mark the point on the app
- 10:35this is really important because this is
- 10:37what is creating your revision list
- 10:40once you've done that start making your
- 10:41way to the next point
- 10:47when you arrive at me london hotel you
- 10:49immediately notice
- 10:50that it's on the corner of the strand
- 10:52and old witch
- 10:53this raises a very good question can i
- 10:56set this down
- 10:57if i was approaching from the strand
- 10:59eastbound
- 11:01so i test this by driving around to see
- 11:03if it's possible
- 11:05and the answer is yes you can set it
- 11:07down when you're coming from the strand
- 11:09eastbound now when you mark the point as
- 11:12visited
- 11:13on your app you can also add the only
- 11:16note that will be necessary
- 11:18i will fully cover note taking in the
- 11:19next chapter of this video
- 11:21to enter a note tap the letter on the
- 11:24map
- 11:24not the one in the list type your note
- 11:28in and it will forever be linked under
- 11:30that point
- 11:33what we also discover is that the radio
- 11:35rooftop bar entrance is further along
- 11:37the aldwich
- 11:39so far that it is possible to access it
- 11:41if we were coming
- 11:42left out of catherine street into the
- 11:44old witch
- 11:55when we tried to mark this point we
- 11:56noticed that the app and paper map do
- 11:58not accurately reflect its location and
- 12:00it needed editing
- 12:01make a note on the paper map and inform
- 12:04wizan and it will
- 12:05immediately be updated as it was in this
- 12:07instance
- 12:08in the images on the screen now you can
- 12:10see before
- 12:12the edit and after the edit and we
- 12:14really rely on your feedback in this
- 12:16regard
- 12:17because radio rooftop bar can be
- 12:19accessed from catherine street if you
- 12:21turn left onto the order which and set
- 12:22down on right
- 12:23it may be worthwhile also adding a quick
- 12:25note to this point
- 12:27the last point for this map and
- 12:28coincidentally the fifth point of the
- 12:30day is the looney restaurant
- 12:32once you have taken a look at this you
- 12:34again mark your app
- 12:36but now you must revise
- 12:42always after pointing four to five
- 12:44points revise
- 12:46the revision is three-fold first revise
- 12:49using verbal answers on the app and
- 12:51press don't know sticky
- 12:53or correct for each
- 12:56the restaurant old witch and drury lane
- 13:00roaming bath is surrey street strand
- 13:02lane
- 13:04radio roof top bar is on the old which
- 13:06me hotel
- 13:08h crest wellington is victoria
- 13:10embankment
- 13:12hey london hotel is always trend
- 13:17once that's done revise again using the
- 13:19map revision feature
- 13:21this requires you to tap the points
- 13:23location on the map itself
- 13:26if you tap the map in exactly the right
- 13:28place then only one option will appear
- 13:30the correct button if you tap the map
- 13:33and you are
- 13:34close but not exact then three options
- 13:36will appear
- 13:37don't know sticky and correct
- 13:40if you tap the map and you are nowhere
- 13:41near then only two options will appear
- 13:44don't know and sticky now revise
- 13:47one more time without the map
- 13:50radio roof top bar is old which me hotel
- 13:56the lawny restaurant is drury lane and
- 13:58aldrich
- 13:59roman bath is surrey street strand lane
- 14:03me london hotel is always strand coach
- 14:06best valentine's victoria embankment
- 14:09three times as a rule should be enough
- 14:11but if you want to do more then by all
- 14:13means
- 14:13do more what you're trying to achieve is
- 14:16to have the road name location
- 14:18on the tip of your tongue when you point
- 14:21another five points
- 14:22revise the 10 you've done you can do
- 14:26this by pressing the today button
- 14:28on your app every time you do five
- 14:30points
- 14:31stop and revise all the points you have
- 14:33done that day by using the today button
- 14:37this part is seriously important you
- 14:39will enhance and develop good memories
- 14:41and because it's fresh you will
- 14:43visualize yourself arriving at most of
- 14:45these points quite comfortably
- 14:47if for any reason you find a particular
- 14:49point hard to remember
- 14:50then leave it do not worry about it it
- 14:53is
- 14:53one out of thousands keep your focus and
- 14:56concentrate
- 14:57on the building a large repertoire of
- 14:59points
- 15:01now that your first day out on the bike
- 15:02pointing is complete you need to return
- 15:04home to revise
- 15:06not only should the revision take place
- 15:07whilst you're out on the road it needs
- 15:09to be repeated when you get home but
- 15:11once again using the today button
- 15:13revise all the points from your day out
- 15:16the ideal way to do this is with a
- 15:18partner
- 15:18asking you the points whilst you're left
- 15:20free to concentrate on the answers
- 15:23if you don't have a partner then it
- 15:24still must be done regardless so do it
- 15:26on your own
- 15:27the app makes this possible i would time
- 15:29myself to see how long it takes me to
- 15:31complete one
- 15:32complete cycle of the day's revision
- 15:34you're trying to reach a standard
- 15:36whereby very little thought is required
- 15:39to give the point's location
- 15:41quick fire question and answers you must
- 15:44work
- 15:44on the creation of a thought reflex
- 15:47whereby hearing the name of the point
- 15:49triggers your memory for the answer this
- 15:52is massively important as it will allow
- 15:54you to still function when under duress
- 15:56such as in exam situations if this
- 15:59requires that you repeat the exercise
- 16:00several times and so be it repetition is
- 16:02what's going to make these points stick
- 16:05and create that reflex if you find
- 16:08yourself
- 16:08really struggling with one point in
- 16:10particular mark it is sticky
- 16:12this will now be added to your sticky
- 16:13list and ready for extra revision
- 16:16you can access the sticky list from the
- 16:17home screen
- 16:19sticky lists should be revised daily
- 16:23you should be able to be given the
- 16:24point's name and say the location
- 16:27answer all in under two to three seconds
- 16:30this should mean you're able to revise
- 16:3250 points in around three to four
- 16:34minutes
- 16:35the lowest acceptable standard is 50
- 16:37points in 10 minutes but please
- 16:39understand that this is extremely low
- 16:43if you're unable to say the answer then
- 16:45your partner should quickly tell you the
- 16:47answer
- 16:48if you don't have a partner then quickly
- 16:50look at the answer
- 16:51don't do clues first letter or it rhymes
- 16:54with something
- 16:55just get on with it and be told the
- 16:57answer this allows for more efficient
- 16:59revision and removes the time wasting
- 17:01aspects that people sometimes add
- 17:03never forget this is revision and not a
- 17:05test
- 17:06on the next cycle around that revision
- 17:08you will hopefully be able to say the
- 17:10answer
- 17:11without being told or looking
- 17:15cycle around this block of revision
- 17:16until you reach your desired standard
- 17:19here is the daily revision technique

- 19:45once this standard is achieved then this
- 19:47new block of points becomes added to
- 19:49your ongoing growing list of pointed and
- 19:51revised
- 19:52points so your daily routine will now
- 19:54need to include an amount of time
- 19:55set aside for regular point revision
- 19:58it's important to always revise the
- 20:01latest points you have visited first
- 20:04so use the weak revision button to
- 20:06revise the complete seven days of
- 20:08pointing you have just done
- 20:10and use the month revision button to
- 20:12revise all points from the last
- 20:1430 days this is outside of any time
- 20:17required to revise your new
- 20:19daily intake of points and finally
- 20:22what's fantastic about the app is it
- 20:23will automatically
- 20:25separate your points into daily random
- 20:27groups for seven days of the week
- 20:29this is giving you a good even spread of
- 20:31revision to do each day
- 20:33you should end up with around three to
- 20:35four hundred points per day to revise
- 20:37two to three thousand plus points in
- 20:39total
- 20:44the three major mistakes made whilst
- 20:46pointing are the taking
- 20:48of notes the use of a map and the volume
- 20:51of revision let's cover these one by one
- 20:54firstly taking notes in the out and
- 20:56about on your bike section of this video
- 20:59you may have seen two notes that i added
- 21:01i did this to show you a couple of
- 21:03examples of the kind of note you may
- 21:04want to take
- 21:05if you're going to take any at all and
- 21:08here's the crux of the issue
- 21:10i would take little to no notes at all
- 21:13understand one key thing about taking
- 21:15notes
- 21:16taking a note is not a memory technique
- 21:20in actual fact it is the complete
- 21:22postponement of a memory technique
- 21:25we have far less success remembering
- 21:26something that is written down than you
- 21:28would if you just tried to repeat
- 21:30what you wanted to remember several
- 21:32times
- 21:34the best way to remember the unique
- 21:36features to any point
- 21:38is by having practical examples of the
- 21:40specific thing
- 21:42you are trying to achieve with setting
- 21:44or leaving that particular point
- 21:47these practical examples are coming at
- 21:49you thick and fast every day by the
- 21:51means of the daily point sheet
- 21:53the practicing of point-to-point is by
- 21:55far the most efficient way to know and
- 21:57learn
- 21:58detail attached to any particular point
- 22:01knowing why you need something knowing
- 22:04an examiner is actually asking
- 22:05something that raised the question for
- 22:07you will make you seek those specific
- 22:09answers
- 22:11that will cause your inquisitive side to
- 22:12investigate understand
- 22:14learn and remember how to leave or
- 22:17set any specific point because you are
- 22:19now fully aware
- 22:21of its purpose and unlike the extremely
- 22:24inefficient method of compiling
- 22:26note after note of information with no
- 22:28regard to its popularity
- 22:30by attacking these issues from the point
- 22:32sheet you know
- 22:33you are addressing something that is
- 22:35needed and is needed now
- 22:37let's look at some examples of how
- 22:39pointless your notes can be
- 22:42using the points in this video as
- 22:43examples let's start with hqs wellington
- 22:46now you're going to hear people tell you
- 22:47you need to make a note of leave on the
- 22:50left only or first left and right in
- 22:52both directions
- 22:53and a turnaround if you think it needs
- 22:54one all of which is a complete and
- 22:57utter waste of time and mental energy
- 23:00moreover
- 23:00it is extremely detrimental to the
- 23:03actual learning and remembering of this
- 23:05or any other point let's address the
- 23:07first question
- 23:09you are about to take a note and you
- 23:11need to decide
- 23:12is the point leave on left only
- 23:15looking at this video and looking at the
- 23:17images what do you think
- 23:19is it leave on the left only or is it
- 23:21leave on right possible
- 23:24the point i'm trying to make here is
- 23:25very often you as a beginner
- 23:27are not qualified to judge if it is
- 23:29leave on left only or not
- 23:32in this instance with the double white
- 23:34line in the center reservation did you
- 23:35conclude
- 23:36it's leave on left only and if that was
- 23:39what you decided
- 23:40based on the video and the images you
- 23:42would be wrong
- 23:44you can leave this point on the right so
- 23:46if you had taken a note not only would
- 23:48it have been a waste of time
- 23:49anyway it would have also been false
- 23:52information
- 23:53so why are you taking notes when you
- 23:55don't even know the answer
- 23:59the next issue regarding first left and
- 24:00rights from both directions
- 24:02this is even more a waste of time as you
- 24:05will not be able to write down
- 24:07any note that doesn't already exist in a
- 24:09far clearer format
- 24:11than you could express with words first
- 24:14of all you have the radius map itself
- 24:15showing you the first left and rights
- 24:18second you have google street to view
- 24:19anytime to check your first left or
- 24:21right any other query regarding any
- 24:23specific point
- 24:25and finally why are you writing down
- 24:27information
- 24:28with absolutely no awareness of whether
- 24:30it's required for any specific
- 24:33question you may feel that you should
- 24:36take notes on all this information in
- 24:38case they ask it
- 24:40the problem with that is this there are
- 24:43already too many questions being asked
- 24:46every day that you can't find the time
- 24:49to practice
- 24:50these questions are being asked not
- 24:52maybe not could be
- 24:53but they are being asked so why are you
- 24:56learning maybes
- 24:58when there is already questions that are
- 25:00absolutely
- 25:01being asked
- 25:04recently radio rooftop bar was being
- 25:06asked and the specific question it
- 25:08raised was
- 25:10can you access the front door of radio
- 25:12rooftop bar
- 25:13if you were coming from catherine street
- 25:15would you need to go all the way around
- 25:17aldrich and back around the strand to
- 25:19get to
- 25:21now i don't take notes so i need to
- 25:23research to find the answer
- 25:25and the research is the key because i
- 25:27now know
- 25:29one the question is being asked two
- 25:32i know exactly why i need the answer
- 25:34three i will practice the question
- 25:36with my point-to-point which will
- 25:38emphasize the answer and aid memory
- 25:42practice in point-to-point which i will
- 25:44cover in a future video but briefly
- 25:46touch upon some aspects in this video
- 25:48in a later chapter is the utilization of
- 25:51leaving and
- 25:51setting that's what point-to-point is
- 25:54the opportunity to practice the leaving
- 25:56and setting of a genuinely asked
- 25:58scenario
- 26:00it is the real life scenario of an ask
- 26:03question
- 26:04if you successfully know how to leave
- 26:06and set any question
- 26:07then any note would have been a waste of
- 26:09time because the information was
- 26:10absorbed and remembered naturally
- 26:12with minimal effort if you find that
- 26:14you're short in information
- 26:16and need to know a first left for a
- 26:17specific question for example
- 26:20just go to google street and check when
- 26:23you do it this way
- 26:24you know exactly why you are looking and
- 26:26investigating this particular piece of
- 26:29information
- 26:31whenever you seek information knowing
- 26:33its purpose and its use
- 26:35it is far more retainable as a memory
- 26:37the collection of written notes with no
- 26:39awareness or
- 26:40understanding of if it will be needed is
- 26:43the collection of clutter
- 26:45so here are the nutshell issues
- 26:48do you know if the note you took will be
- 26:50required
- 26:52are you writing notes for something that
- 26:54your a to z
- 26:55or google street will show better are
- 26:58your notes reducing the amount of points
- 27:00you collect each day
- 27:03are your notes detracting from revising
- 27:05to develop a reflex answer
- 27:08notes do not help with remembering they
- 27:11are a tool
- 27:12that remembers things for you for the
- 27:14sole purpose of allowing you
- 27:16not to remember it let's look at two
- 27:20real-life practical examples of writing
- 27:22over remembering
- 27:24bear in mind your job in this regard is
- 27:26to remember
- 27:28if i ask you to write down a phone
- 27:30number what do you think your chances
- 27:31are
- 27:32of remembering it just from writing now
- 27:35imagine you do not have a pen and paper
- 27:37you now know you must remember it you
- 27:40engage your brain
- 27:41you repeat the number until you feel
- 27:42comfortable that you have made the link
- 27:46notes prevent the development of that
- 27:48link
- 27:49the same applies with shopping lists
- 27:52there's a very simple memory technique
- 27:53for shopping lists
- 27:54first tell the person what it is you
- 27:56need to buy then count how many items
- 27:59you have mentioned
- 28:01very often just knowing you need 10
- 28:02items is enough to trigger the memory
- 28:04of all 10 items as you put them in your
- 28:06basket
- 28:08when you've placed seven items you will
- 28:09know you still have three objects left
- 28:10to buy
- 28:11you will search your memory for what you
- 28:13think the remaining items are in most
- 28:15instances
- 28:16you will be able to remember so take
- 28:18minimal
- 28:19to no notes trust yourself to remember
- 28:23because in the case of points it's
- 28:25better to remember seven
- 28:26and forget three than it is to have not
- 28:29tried to remember
- 28:30anything by writing all 10 down and
- 28:32placing them in your pocket
- 28:35the second issue i mentioned was the map
- 28:38as you may have seen in our previous
- 28:39videos
- 28:40using a map has a very specific
- 28:42technique
- 28:43when you're driving from one point to
- 28:45the next it's important that you
- 28:47think your way to the next point
- 28:50obviously if you have no idea or feel
- 28:51lost then you get the maple cat and you
- 28:53check it
- 28:54but if you're able to go from one point
- 28:56to the next using your
- 28:58so far acquired knowledge then that's
- 28:59fantastic
- 29:01that's you actually expressing real life
- 29:04knowledge you are practicing constantly
- 29:07and engaging your internal navigation
- 29:08skills
- 29:09that are growing all the time carrying a
- 29:12map with you and use it to answer
- 29:14questions
- 29:15or find your way don't let it just tell
- 29:17you the answers to things that you may
- 29:20have been able to solve in your head
- 29:24finally revision look at your schedule
- 29:28and allocate an hour a day to point
- 29:30revision
- 29:31points will go into your long-term
- 29:33memory this means once revised correctly
- 29:36they will need minimal to no revision at
- 29:38all
- 29:39many students waste an abundance of
- 29:41valuable study time revising points that
- 29:43are
- 29:44already fully remembered so try to avoid
- 29:47revising long lists of points that are
- 29:49of the caliber of houston station
- 29:51buckingham palace
- 29:52bbc rehearsal studios and others these
- 29:55will amount to hundreds of points which
- 29:56in itself will amount to
- 29:58lots of wasted minutes in revision if
- 30:01you continue to revise points that have
- 30:02made it into your long-term memory
- 30:03already
- 30:05your focus should be points to have been
- 30:08newly acquired
- 30:09and sticky points points that cause your
- 30:11brain to freeze because you have yet to
- 30:13develop a reflex answer for them
- 30:16never overlook the importance of the
- 30:18sticky list
- 30:20these are your weak points and are far
- 30:22more valuable to revise
- 30:23than your general list of points if
- 30:26you'd like a lesson with me one to one
- 30:28on a group of four these can all be
