- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Enjoy
- 0:03English Talks, where every conversation
- 0:05helps you learn. I'm Judy.
- 0:08>> Hello Judy. Hello everyone. I'm Jake.
- 0:11How are you today, Judy?
- 0:12>> I am wonderful today, thank you. The sun
- 0:15is shining and I am happy to be here.
- 0:18And you, Jake?
- 0:19>> Uh,
- 0:20>> [sighs and gasps]
- 0:20>> I am okay, but something happened
- 0:23yesterday. I made a mistake.
- 0:26>> A mistake? What happened?
- 0:28>> I was at a coffee shop. I wanted to say,
- 0:32"I want a cup of coffee." But I said, "I
- 0:35want a cap of coffee."
- 0:37>> A cap of coffee? Cap, like a hat?
- 0:41>> Yes, a cap, like a hat. The woman looked
- 0:44at me. She was confused.
- 0:47>> Oh, Jake, that is okay. Everyone makes
- 0:50mistakes.
- 0:52>> I know, but I felt embarrassed. I felt
- 0:55bad in front of other people.
- 0:57>> I understand. But Jake, that one small
- 1:00mistake is not a problem. It is a normal
- 1:03part of learning.
- 1:05>> Really?
- 1:06>> Really. And that is actually our topic
- 1:08today.
- 1:09>> What is our topic?
- 1:11>> Today, we're talking about mistakes and
- 1:13why it's okay to make them.
- 1:15>> It's okay to make mistakes?
- 1:18>> Yes, it's okay to make mistakes. That is
- 1:21our big message today. But first, we
- 1:23have a small request.
- 1:25>> Yes, if you like our podcast, please
- 1:27click the like button.
- 1:28>> Please subscribe to Enjoy English Talks.
- 1:32>> And share this episode with your friends
- 1:34and family.
- 1:35>> Thank you. It helps us so much.
- 1:38>> We love our listeners.
- 1:40>> Okay, now let's start. First, let's talk
- 1:43about an important word, mistake. Jake,
- 1:47what is a mistake?
- 1:49>> A mistake is when you do something
- 1:51wrong, an error.
- 1:53>> Yes, a mistake is an error, something
- 1:56that is not correct, like saying cap
- 1:59when you mean cup.
- 2:01>> Like me yesterday.
- 2:03>> Yes, but here's the truth, Jake.
- 2:06Everyone makes mistakes. Every single
- 2:09person in the world.
- 2:10>> Even you, Judy?
- 2:12>> Even me. I make mistakes every day, and
- 2:15that is okay because mistakes help us
- 2:18learn.
- 2:19>> Mistakes help us learn. I like that
- 2:22idea.
- 2:23>> Let me show you what I mean. Think about
- 2:26learning English. Many people are afraid
- 2:28to speak English.
- 2:30>> Afraid? That means scared, right?
- 2:33>> Yes, afraid means you feel scared,
- 2:36scared to try something. Many people
- 2:39think, "What if I say the wrong word?"
- 2:42>> Ugh, that is how I feel sometimes. My
- 2:45brain says, "Jake, don't speak. You will
- 2:48sound silly."
- 2:49>> Your brain says that?
- 2:51>> Yes, my brain says stay quiet. It is
- 2:54safer.
- 2:55>> Many people feel this way, but here's
- 2:58the thing, Jake. If you stay quiet, you
- 3:01don't practice, and if you don't
- 3:02practice, you don't improve.
- 3:05>> Improve? That means to get better at
- 3:08something.
- 3:09>> Yes, improve means to get better at
- 3:11something, and the only way to improve
- 3:14is to try. And when you try, sometimes
- 3:17you make mistakes.
- 3:18>> And that is okay.
- 3:20>> Yes, it's okay to make mistakes. Think
- 3:23about a baby learning to talk.
- 3:26>> A baby?
- 3:27>> Yes, a baby says "wawa" for water. Is
- 3:31that wrong?
- 3:32>> Well, yes, but the baby is learning.
- 3:36>> Exactly. The baby is learning, and
- 3:38nobody says, "That baby is bad at
- 3:41talking." Nobody. Everyone smiles and
- 3:44says, "The baby is trying."
- 3:47>> And I am like the baby. I am learning.
- 3:50>> Yes, you are learning, and your mistakes
- 3:53are part of the journey.
- 3:54>> Part of the journey. I like that. Judy,
- 3:58can I tell you another mistake I made?
- 4:01>> Of course, tell me.
- 4:02>> Last week, I was talking to my friend. I
- 4:05wanted to say, I went to the store, but
- 4:08I said, I goed to the store.
- 4:12>> I goed to the store. And what happened?
- 4:15>> My friend smiled and he said, you mean I
- 4:18went to the store.
- 4:20>> And how did you feel?
- 4:22>> I felt a little embarrassed. My face
- 4:25turned red, but my friend was kind. He
- 4:28was not laughing at me. He was helping
- 4:30me.
- 4:31>> That is what good friends do. They help
- 4:33you.
- 4:34>> Yes, and he said, don't worry Jake, I
- 4:37make mistakes, too. Everyone does.
- 4:40>> See, your friend understood you. He knew
- 4:43what you wanted to say. The message was
- 4:45clear.
- 4:46>> The message was clear even with the
- 4:47mistake.
- 4:48>> Yes, and now you know the past of go is
- 4:52went, not goed.
- 4:54>> I will never forget that because of the
- 4:57mistake.
- 4:58>> Exactly. The mistake helped you
- 5:00remember. That is the power of mistakes.
- 5:03>> Mistakes have power. That is a very new
- 5:06idea for me.
- 5:08>> Now, let me give you another example,
- 5:10not about English. Think about riding a
- 5:13bicycle.
- 5:14>> A bicycle?
- 5:16>> Yes. Jake, do you remember learning to
- 5:19ride a bicycle?
- 5:20>> Yes, I was maybe six or seven years old.
- 5:24>> Did you ride perfectly the first time?
- 5:27>> No, I fell down many times.
- 5:31>> What happened when you fell?
- 5:32>> My knees were hurt, my hands were hurt,
- 5:35and I was scared. I wanted to cry.
- 5:38>> That is normal. Falling hurts. It is
- 5:41scary.
- 5:41>> Yes, and I thought, maybe I can't do
- 5:44this. Maybe riding a bicycle is too hard
- 5:47for me.
- 5:47>> Your brain was telling you to stop.
- 5:50>> Yes, my brain said, "This is too
- 5:52difficult. Give up."
- 5:53>> But did you stop?
- 5:55>> No, my dad said, "Get up. Try again."
- 5:58So, I got up. I tried again, and again,
- 6:01and again.
- 6:02>> And one day
- 6:03>> One day, I could ride. I was riding my
- 6:06bicycle, and I felt so free, so happy.
- 6:09>> That feeling, that happy feeling, it
- 6:12came because you did not give up. You
- 6:14fell 10 times, 20 times, but you always
- 6:18got up.
- 6:19>> Yes, every time I fell, I learned
- 6:21something. I learned how to balance, how
- 6:23to turn, how to stop.
- 6:25>> See, you made mistakes, but you got up
- 6:28every time, and now you can ride a
- 6:30bicycle. Nobody rides perfectly the
- 6:32first time.
- 6:33>> That is true. Falling was part of
- 6:35learning. Without the falling, there was
- 6:37no riding.
- 6:38>> It's okay to make mistakes. That is how
- 6:41we learn, on a bicycle and in English.
- 6:44>> Just like English. When I make a mistake
- 6:47in English, I fall down, but I get up
- 6:49and try again.
- 6:50>> That is beautiful, Jake. Falling in
- 6:53English is not dangerous. It does not
- 6:55hurt your knees.
- 6:57>> No, it only hurts my pride a little.
- 6:59>> Pride, that means the feeling of being
- 7:01good at something. When you make a
- 7:03mistake, your pride hurts a little.
- 7:06>> Yes, but pride heals fast, faster than
- 7:09knees.
- 7:10>> Yes, much, much faster. Now, one more
- 7:13example. Last month, I tried to cook a
- 7:15new recipe.
- 7:17>> What did you cook?
- 7:18>> Soup, a vegetable soup, but I put too
- 7:21much salt.
- 7:22>> Too much salt?
- 7:23>> Uh yes, way too much. The soup was
- 7:27terrible. I could not eat it.
- 7:29>> Oh, no. That is sad.
- 7:31>> It was sad. I was disappointed.
- 7:34Disappointed means I felt sad because
- 7:36something did not go well.
- 7:38>> Disappointed, I know that feeling. Like
- 7:41when I said cap instead of cup.
- 7:43>> Yes, that feeling. It is not a good
- 7:46feeling, but it is a normal feeling.
- 7:48Everybody feels disappointed sometimes.
- 7:51>> What did you do after the bad soup?
- 7:53>> I wanted to give up. My brain said,
- 7:56"Judy, you are not good at cooking. Stop
- 7:58trying."
- 7:59>> Your brain said that?
- 8:01>> Yes, but I did not listen. I said, "No,
- 8:04I will try again."
- 8:06>> Good for you, Judy. You are brave.
- 8:08>> Thank you, Jake. So, the next week I
- 8:10tried again, the same recipe, and this
- 8:14time I put less salt.
- 8:16>> And?
- 8:16>> It was delicious.
- 8:18>> The mistake taught you.
- 8:20>> Exactly. The first mistake taught me.
- 8:23Now I know how much salt to use. My
- 8:26mistake was my teacher.
- 8:28>> So, mistakes are like teachers.
- 8:30>> Yes, exactly. Three examples: English, a
- 8:34bicycle, and cooking. Three very
- 8:36different things, but the lesson is the
- 8:38same.
- 8:39>> The lesson is the same. Mistakes help us
- 8:42learn.
- 8:43>> It's okay to make mistakes. They teach
- 8:45us important things every time.
- 8:48>> Every time.
- 8:49>> Now, Jake, I want to share three
- 8:52secrets. Three secrets about mistakes.
- 8:55>> Three secrets? I love secrets. Tell me,
- 8:57Judy.
- 8:58>> Secret number one. Don't be afraid to
- 9:01try.
- 9:01>> Don't be afraid to try.
- 9:04>> Many people don't try because they are
- 9:06afraid of mistakes. Fear says, "Don't
- 9:09speak. People will laugh at you."
- 9:11>> Fear says that. I can hear it in my
- 9:13head.
- 9:14>> But courage says, "Try. You will learn
- 9:16something new."
- 9:18>> Fear says, "Don't try." Courage says,
- 9:20"Try."
- 9:21>> Yes, and being brave is not about being
- 9:24perfect. Being brave means you try even
- 9:27when you feel afraid.
- 9:28>> Brave, that means I try even when I am
- 9:31scared.
- 9:32>> Yes, that is exactly what brave means.
- 9:35And Jake, you are brave.
- 9:37>> Me, brave?
- 9:38>> Yes, you speak English every week on
- 9:41this podcast. That takes courage.
- 9:43>> Um, I never thought about it that way.
- 9:46Thank you, Judy.
- 9:47>> Think about it. The first time you spoke
- 9:49English on this podcast, were you
- 9:51afraid?
- 9:52>> Yes, very afraid. My hands were shaking.
- 9:55>> But you did it. You spoke, and every
- 9:57week you get better.
- 9:59>> Because I keep trying, even when I am
- 10:01afraid.
- 10:02>> That is secret number one. Don't be
- 10:04afraid to try.
- 10:06>> Don't be afraid to try. I will remember
- 10:08that.
- 10:09>> Good. Secret number two, every mistake
- 10:12is a lesson.
- 10:13>> Every mistake is a lesson.
- 10:15>> Your mistakes are not your enemies. They
- 10:18are your teachers. When you say cap
- 10:20instead of cup, now you know the
- 10:23difference forever.
- 10:24>> That is true. I will never say cap of
- 10:27coffee again.
- 10:28>> See, the mistake taught you. Your
- 10:30mistake was a gift.
- 10:32>> My mistake was a gift. I never thought
- 10:34about mistakes that way before.
- 10:36>> Think about all the words you know now.
- 10:39Many of those words you learned from
- 10:41mistakes. You said them wrong once,
- 10:43someone helped you, and now you
- 10:45remember.
- 10:46>> That is true. Mistakes put the words in
- 10:48my brain deeper than a textbook.
- 10:51>> Deeper than a textbook. I love that,
- 10:53Jake.
- 10:54>> What is the last secret?
- 10:55>> Secret number three, try again tomorrow.
- 10:58>> Try again tomorrow.
- 11:00>> One bad day is not the end. One mistake
- 11:03is not the end. Tomorrow is a new day.
- 11:06You can always try again.
- 11:08>> Tomorrow is a new day. I like that a
- 11:10lot.
- 11:11>> Many famous people made many, many
- 11:13mistakes. Scientists, musicians,
- 11:16writers, they all made mistakes, but
- 11:19they did not stop. They kept trying, and
- 11:21they got better.
- 11:22>> Really? Even famous people?
- 11:25>> Yes, every good English speaker was once
- 11:27a beginner, just like you. And every
- 11:30beginner makes mistakes. The important
- 11:32thing is to keep going, to get up after
- 11:35you fall, just like the bicycle.
- 11:37>> Just like the bicycle. Get up and try
- 11:40again.
- 11:41>> Think about this. Maybe today you tried
- 11:44to speak English and it did not go well.
- 11:46Your brain says, "See, you are bad at
- 11:49this. Stop trying."
- 11:50>> My brain does say that sometimes.
- 11:53>> But you can say back to your brain, "No,
- 11:56I am learning and tomorrow I will try
- 11:59again."
- 12:00>> I will try again. That is powerful.
- 12:02>> Yes, the people who learn the most are
- 12:05not the people who never make mistakes.
- 12:07They are the people who never stop
- 12:09trying.
- 12:10>> The people who never stop trying. Wow.
- 12:13>> And nobody is perfect. Perfect means no
- 12:16mistakes, 100% correct, but nobody is
- 12:20perfect.
- 12:21>> Nobody?
- 12:22>> Nobody. Not me, not you, not your
- 12:25teacher, not anyone. And that's okay
- 12:28because perfect is not the goal.
- 12:30>> What is the goal?
- 12:32>> The goal is to improve, to get a little
- 12:35better every day. Not perfect, just
- 12:37better.
- 12:38>> A little better every day. That is a
- 12:40beautiful goal.
- 12:42>> And every mistake you make is one step
- 12:44closer to that goal, one step closer to
- 12:47speaking English well.
- 12:49>> One step closer. I like that.
- 12:52>> So let's remember our three secrets.
- 12:54Secret one,
- 12:55>> don't be afraid to try.
- 12:57>> Secret two,
- 12:58>> every mistake is a lesson.
- 13:00>> And secret three,
- 13:02>> try again tomorrow.
- 13:03>> Very, very good, Jake.
- 13:05>> These are very good secrets. I feel
- 13:08better about my mistakes now.
- 13:10>> I'm glad. And now I want to say
- 13:12something to our listeners.
- 13:14>> Yes, please listen, everyone.
- 13:16>> If you are listening right now, we are
- 13:18so proud of you. You are learning
- 13:20English and that is amazing.
- 13:23>> Yes, we are proud of you.
- 13:25>> You are doing something difficult and
- 13:27that takes courage.
- 13:28>> We know it is not easy.
- 13:30>> If you made a mistake today, that's
- 13:32okay. If you forgot a word, that's okay.
- 13:35If you said something wrong, that's
- 13:37okay.
- 13:38>> It's okay to make mistakes.
- 13:40>> Because every mistake brings you closer
- 13:43to your goal.
- 13:44>> You are not failing. You are learning.
- 13:46>> You are brave. You are strong and you
- 13:49are getting better every single day.
- 13:51>> We believe in you.
- 13:52>> You don't need to be perfect. You just
- 13:55need to try.
- 13:56>> Try one new word this week.
- 13:58>> Try one new sentence.
- 14:00>> Say hello to someone in English.
- 14:02>> Write a comment in English.
- 14:04>> Read one page of a book in English.
- 14:06>> Small steps every day.
- 14:09>> And if you make a mistake, that's okay.
- 14:11>> Because mistakes are your friends, not
- 14:14your enemies.
- 14:15>> You can do it. We know you can.
- 14:17>> Okay, let's review.
- 14:19>> Yes, let's see what we learned.
- 14:21>> Today we talked about mistakes and why
- 14:23they are okay.
- 14:25>> Yes, mistakes help us learn and improve.
- 14:28>> Good. And we learned three secrets.
- 14:30>> Don't be afraid to try. Every mistake is
- 14:33a lesson. And try again tomorrow.
- 14:36>> Perfect. You remembered everything.
- 14:38>> I learned a lot today.
- 14:40>> And I am so proud of you for trying,
- 14:42Jake. Well, that's all the time we have
- 14:44for today.
- 14:45>> Thank you so much for listening to Enjoy
- 14:47English Talks.
- 14:49>> Yes, thank you everyone. It was fun.
- 14:51>> Please subscribe to Enjoy English Talks.
- 14:54>> Give this episode a like.
- 14:56>> And share it with a friend.
- 14:57>> Now, we have a question for you today.
- 15:00>> Yes, please leave a comment below.
- 15:03>> Tell us, what is one small thing you
- 15:05will try in English this week? Maybe say
- 15:08one new word or write one sentence.
- 15:11>> We would love to read your answers.
- 15:13>> See you next time.
- 15:14>> Bye everyone. Keep practicing your
- 15:16English.
