- 0:02be silent like in the word fasten it can
- 0:06be pronounced CH H CH as in the word
- 0:09future it can be pronounced T like in
- 0:12the word tap when paired with the H it
- 0:15can be F the unvoiced th as in the word
- 0:19thanks or it can be V the voiced th as
- 0:24in the word this the letter T can
- 0:27actually represent various sounds the
- 0:30this is why the International Phonetic
- 0:31Alphabet makes it easier to study the
- 0:33pronunciation of foreign languages this
- 0:36video focuses on

- 0:47Phonetic Alphabet it's a system of
- 0:49phonetic notation and I use it a lot on
- 0:52my website and when I teach students
- 0:55I've also used it a lot when I've
- 0:56studied foreign languages the IPA is
- 0:59especially handy when studying English
- 1:02because English is not a phonetic
- 1:04language this means when you see a
- 1:06letter or a group of letters it will not
- 1:08necessarily be pronounced the same in
- 1:10each word in which it occurs just as in
- 1:13the example at the beginning of this
- 1:15video the IPA has a written symbol for
- 1:18each phonetic sound so this makes it
- 1:21easier to read about and write about
- 1:24pronunciation as a student of
- 1:26pronunciation it's important that you
- 1:28become familiar with the symbol that
- 1:30represent the sounds of American
