- 0:01Hello Skillaboxers.
- 0:02Today, [music] we are going to break
- 0:04down one of the most athletic and
- 0:06creative boxers in the sport today.
- 0:09But also one of the most skilled.
- 0:10[music]
- 0:10>> Have fun.
- 0:14OH.
- 0:15OH MY GOD.
- 0:17>> With his unorthodox style,
- 0:19he became the lineal champion at
- 0:21lightweight, 135 lb,
- 0:24and junior welterweight, 140 lb, at the
- 0:27age of 25.
- 0:30We're going to teach you the science
- 0:31behind Teofimo Lopez's creative and
- 0:34unconventional boxing style,
- 0:36breaking down his best skills, as well
- 0:38as some of his biggest flaws.
- 0:41We'll also break down some of the unique
- 0:43footwork techniques Teo uses that make
- 0:45him so creative in the ring.
- 0:48>> Let's go to show you.
- 0:50You guys haven't seen anything yet.
- 0:52>> And throughout the video, we'll also
- 0:54give you a workout based on his skills,
- 0:56so you can try them at home.
- 0:59So, let's start with the first
- 1:00unorthodox technique.
- 1:04The cross guard.
- 1:06As mentioned, Lopez has a very
- 1:08unorthodox style.
- 1:10He will often box with his hands down,
- 1:12relying on his athleticism, footwork,
- 1:15and lightning-fast reflexes.
- 1:18However, something interesting about his
- 1:21guard is how he will sometimes use the
- 1:23cross guard, or as he calls it, the
- 1:25Foreman.
- 1:27This is a guard more commonly associated
- 1:30with old-school boxers such as George
- 1:31Foreman, Ken Norton,
- 1:33>> [music]
- 1:33>> Evander Holyfield, and Tim Witherspoon.
- 1:37The idea behind this guard is to protect
- 1:39your face by keeping both forearms
- 1:41horizontally across it.
- 1:44The purpose is to close the guard to
- 1:46block straight punches while rolling or
- 1:48parrying hooks and uppercuts.
- 1:51Teo doesn't really fight out of this
- 1:53guard, but he does use it at key
- 1:55moments, and very effectively.
- 1:58He mainly uses it to counter by catching
- 2:01and shooting.
- 2:01>> Timing and rhythm. It really does.
- 2:04>> Then look at that hook he landed.
- 2:07>> That's what gone on.
- 2:10>> He will bring up the cross guard and as
- 2:13soon as he feels contact, he immediately
- 2:15fires back with his own shot.
- 2:17>> One and two.
- 2:19>> Other times, he will use it to parry
- 2:21punches before countering.
- 2:22>> I mean Joshua when I fought Joshua
- 2:24Taylor the foreman, he threw a jab
- 2:27and he was orthodox, so he went this
- 2:29way. He threw a jab and went here and
- 2:30threw a hook.
- 2:32Off of one motion and all I did it was
- 2:34like this. Just went here and went here.
- 2:39>> And then you get hit
- 2:40>> Oh, HE SETS HIM OFF BALANCE.
- 2:44>> Teo is constantly changing guards and
- 2:47creating traffic to block and parry
- 2:48punches.
- 2:50This is very confusing for the opponent.
- 2:53And it creates opportunities for one of
- 2:55his greatest strengths
- 2:56and the foundation of his style.
- 3:00Counter punching.
- 3:02Teo performs best against aggressive
- 3:04opponents who like to come forward
- 3:06because they naturally give him more
- 3:08opportunities to land his dangerous
- 3:10counters.
- 3:11>> Good head movement.
- 3:12>> His incredible athleticism and quick
- 3:14reflexes allow him to counter from
- 3:16almost any position.
- 3:18As mentioned before,
- 3:20he frequently uses his arms to parry
- 3:22punches before immediately countering.
- 3:25He often uses down parries before
- 3:27countering over the opponent's lead arm.
- 3:30>> Reverses gets that cut two on his
- 3:37>> He's also very effective from the Philly
- 3:38shell.
- 3:39Rolling with punches before coming back
- 3:41with his cross.
- 3:42>> Extreme confidence, Drake.
- 3:44>> I don't see a lot of touch.
- 3:45>> Teo.
- 3:46>> But that's the start that he needs to
- 3:47have.
- 3:48>> Other times, he leans toward his lead
- 3:50side to block the opponent's attack
- 3:52while simultaneously loading up his own
- 3:54counter.
- 3:55Usually a quick hook.
- 3:58>> So often fighters
- 3:59>> Whenever Teo finds his rhythm and his
- 4:01opponents begin opening up, that is when
- 4:04he is at his most dangerous.
- 4:07But now that we have seen one of his
- 4:09more obvious strengths,
- 4:10let's look at one of his most underrated
- 4:12ones.
- 4:16Long-range body shots.
- 4:18We are used to seeing body shots thrown
- 4:20from close or mid-range, usually in the
- 4:22form of hooks to the sides of the body.
- 4:26However,
- 4:26>> [music]
- 4:26>> some of Teofimo's best body shots come
- 4:28from long range.
- 4:30It is a skill that often goes unnoticed,
- 4:33but one that helps him gradually break
- 4:34down his opponents.
- 4:36>> Yeah, but a lot easier
- 4:38when it's just 100 people.
- 4:39>> Here in the crowd could be the decider.
- 4:41We could be sitting
- 4:42>> You have to find a way to beat
- 4:46>> Another body shot.
- 4:49There's a right hand
- 4:50>> to the body.
- 4:50>> To attack the body from long range, you
- 4:52have to step into your punches.
- 4:56Teofimo will often step in with a jab to
- 4:59the body.
- 5:00This is called a stab jab and is
- 5:02commonly used by slick boxers to target
- 5:04the body from the outside.
- 5:06>> Everything to win and nothing to lose.
- 5:10>> But the stab jab is not his only weapon.
- 5:12He will also step in with his rear hand,
- 5:15either throwing a straight cross or rear
- 5:17hook to the body.
- 5:20Again, these body shots are extremely
- 5:22effective because they allow him to wear
- 5:24down his opponent without needing to
- 5:26fight at close range.
- 5:29There are three keys to these long-range
- 5:31body shots, all of which Teo executes
- 5:33perfectly.
- 5:36The first is stepping in with the punch
- 5:38to get into range.
- 5:40The second is sitting down on the punch.
- 5:44You should never reach down with only
- 5:45your arms because it leaves you exposed.
- 5:49Instead, bring your entire body into the
- 5:51punch and lower your level toward the
- 5:53target.
- 5:56And lastly,
- 5:57get back out of range immediately to
- 5:59avoid the counter.
- 6:01Teo will usually finish with a quick
- 6:02pull back to evade any return fire.
- 6:06But why are we putting so much emphasis
- 6:07on the mechanics of long-range body
- 6:09shots?
- 6:11Because they're one of the five core
- 6:12areas we'll cover in this week's Teofimo
- 6:14inspired workout.
- 6:16Teo has one of the deepest arsenals of
- 6:18offensive patterns, defensive
- 6:20transitions, and setups in boxing,
- 6:22which is why we created the takeover
- 6:25series.
- 6:27In part one, you'll add the cross block,
- 6:30gazelle attacks,
- 6:31>> [music]
- 6:31>> and basic counters to your arsenal and
- 6:33practice blending them into your own
- 6:35style.

- 7:07training app.
- 7:11Lunging shots.
- 7:13Teo's attacks are both unpredictable and
- 7:15flashy.
- 7:17His incredible athleticism allows him to
- 7:19attack with a level of creativity that
- 7:21very few fighters possess.
- 7:25You only have to watch him work on the
- 7:26heavy bag to see how unique and
- 7:28explosive he really is.
- 7:33One of his most unpredictable attacks is
- 7:35the lunging punch.
- 7:38These attacks are performed by
- 7:40explosively jumping forward as you throw
- 7:42your punch.
- 7:43This requires exceptional athleticism
- 7:46and explosiveness.
- 7:47>> is go down to the body first.
- 7:48>> Teo often sets them up by sitting down
- 7:51first, loading his legs before exploding
- 7:53into the attack.
- 7:56If done correctly, it can also serve as
- 7:58a distraction, making it even harder for
- 8:00the opponent to anticipate what is
- 8:02coming.
- 8:03>> And if you look at it before I did it, I
- 8:05went
- 8:07See, I set I set I set.
- 8:10See, I set.
- 8:11See, he has that tendency.
- 8:13>> Took by Lopez, that sends Commey back
- 8:16here at the start of round two.
- 8:18OH, [screaming]
- 8:19WHAT A BIG SHOT BY LOPEZ.
- 8:22>> AFTER lowering his level, he drives
- 8:24explosively with his legs to launch
- 8:26himself into the attack.
- 8:29One of his best examples is the lunging
- 8:31jab.
- 8:33This is a technique that was also used
- 8:35by Marvin Hagler.
- 8:36And once again,
- 8:38it makes it extremely difficult for
- 8:40opponents to anticipate or adapt to it.
- 8:42>> Down, that's four.
- 8:45OH!
- 8:47>> He has some personal plans coming up.
- 8:51>> But perhaps one of his most beautiful
- 8:53and unique qualities is his
- 8:57creative footwork.
- 8:59When it comes to footwork, or boxing in
- 9:01general, you always begin with the
- 9:03fundamentals.
- 9:05The fundamentals tell you never to cross
- 9:07your feet and to always maintain a
- 9:09consistent distance between them.
- 9:13However,
- 9:14once you have mastered those
- 9:15fundamentals,
- 9:16>> [music]
- 9:16>> you can begin adding new layers to your
- 9:18footwork.
- 9:20Sometimes, that even means breaking
- 9:22those rules,
- 9:23but always with intention and
- 9:25understanding.
- 9:27Teofimo is a true master of footwork,
- 9:30and he understands the intricacies of
- 9:32movement better than most people
- 9:33realize.
- 9:36As mentioned before, he often breaks
- 9:38some of the first rules every boxer
- 9:40learns, but he makes it work because he
- 9:42remains aware of his positioning and
- 9:45always maintains excellent balance.
- 9:48For example, he likes to briefly cross
- 9:50his feet as a distraction and as a way
- 9:52of finding rhythm.
- 9:55>> There you go. That's it right there.
- 9:57Do it again.
- 10:00Stop.
- 10:00>> He also teaches pivoting on the heel
- 10:03>> [music]
- 10:03>> before immediately pushing off into a
- 10:05step back.
- 10:06>> Cuz why?
- 10:07When you're boxing,
- 10:09you go here,
- 10:10you can push off.
- 10:12Here, push off.
- 10:14Here, push off.
- 10:15>> Another movement he uses constantly is
- 10:18the shift.
- 10:20A shift is performed by stepping forward
- 10:22or backward in a pivoting motion into
- 10:24the opposite stance.
- 10:28This movement has many purposes,
- 10:30but the main ones are creating or
- 10:32closing distance while throwing off the
- 10:34opponent.
- 10:35>> Is Lopez
- 10:37>> Teo often shifts backward to move out of
- 10:39range and avoid punches.
- 10:42He also uses it whenever he overextends
- 10:45with his rear hand, shifting forward
- 10:47before immediately shifting back to
- 10:49recover his stance.
- 10:51Other times, however,
- 10:53he deliberately shifts forward to both
- 10:55close the distance and confuse his
- 10:57opponent.
- 10:59He will often throw punches during the
- 11:01shift itself, making it much harder for
- 11:03the opponent to counter while disguising
- 11:05his own attack.
- 11:08This rapid change of stance confuses
- 11:10opponents and frequently puts Teo in the
- 11:12perfect position to land his power
- 11:14shots.
- 11:17If you are interested in learning this
- 11:19technique, we also have a complete
- 11:21shifting workout on the Skill of
- 11:22Training app,
- 11:24where we cover the most effective
- 11:25combinations built around the shift.
- 11:29But now that we have seen his best
- 11:30skills,
- 11:31let's take a look at his flaws.
- 11:34Flaws.
- 11:36These lunging attacks and unconventional
- 11:39punches, while explosive and
- 11:40unpredictable, also leave Teo out of
- 11:43position.
- 11:45As a result, it becomes more difficult
- 11:47for him to cut off the ring since he
- 11:49constantly has to reset before
- 11:51continuing to pressure his opponent.
- 11:54Against slick and mobile boxes,
- 11:56we have seen him struggle to trap them
- 11:58for exactly this reason.
- 12:00As they are often able to pivot away and
- 12:01regain control of the center of the
- 12:03ring.
- 12:07He will sometimes become frustrated when
- 12:09he cannot catch his opponent, leading
- 12:11him to throw even more reckless attacks,
- 12:14often without setting them up properly.
- 12:17This makes him telegraph his punches
- 12:19and gives his opponents better
- 12:20opportunities to counter.
- 12:22>> Hard.
- 12:23Right on the top of the nose.
- 12:24>> Nice hard cross with that line.
- 12:26>> In the clinch,
- 12:28Teo can sometimes become passive,
- 12:30waiting for the referee to separate the
- 12:31fighters.
- 12:34This was evident against Josh Taylor,
- 12:36where Taylor consistently made the
- 12:38exchanges rough on the inside, catching
- 12:40Teo by surprise early in the fight
- 12:42before he gradually adapted.
- 12:46Against a physically strong opponent
- 12:47such as Rolly,
- 12:48this could be an area where he can have
- 12:50problems.
- 12:52But as we mentioned earlier, Teofimo has
- 12:54already fought many of the best fighters
- 12:56in the sport
- 12:58and at a very young age became the
- 12:59lineal champion in two weight divisions.
- 13:03However, after his most recent
- 13:05performances,
- 13:06some people argue that his best days may
- 13:08already be behind him.
- 13:11Now, what do you think?
- 13:13How do you think his next fight against
- 13:14Rolly will play out?
