Full transcript
- 0:00Today I want to give you a rundown of some New Zealand slang.
- 0:08So New Zealand slang isn't used by everyone here.
- 0:10It definitely depends on who you are and who you hang out with.
- 0:14I'd say certain pockets of people use it and use certain ones.
- 0:19Alright, let's get to it!
- 0:23First and foremost, let's start off with Kiwis which is a term used to call New Zealanders.
- 0:30It's not derogatory or negative in any way.
- 0:35It's just a shorter and quicker (and cuter?) way of calling New Zealanders.
- 0:44Arvo: the afternoon.
- 0:46So this is also used by Aussies (Australians).
- 0:50Something like, "See you in the arvo." Or...
- 0:55"Can't wait for that barbecue in the arvo!"
- 0:57That was so Kiwi.
- 1:01She'll be right: It'll be okay.
- 1:03Everything will be okay.
- 1:05So if you have a problem, someone asks you...
- 1:11"How's that problem going?"
- 1:13And you say, "She'll be right."
- 1:18Choice: cool.
- 1:21Choice.
- 1:23Churr or churr bro if you want to get more Kiwi.
- 1:29Churr basically means cheers or thanks.
- 1:34Crack up, which basically means funny.
- 1:38So if you say, "Oh Gary man, he's crack up!"
- 1:43Gary he's funny, he's hilarious.
- 1:48Hungus.
- 1:49You can probably tell what this one means... Hungry.
- 1:53I used to use this one a lot back when I was younger.
- 1:58Hungus.
- 2:00Yeah, nah or nah, yeah.
- 2:07It's basically an uncertain yes or an uncertain no.
- 2:11So, whatever is the one after it is your answer.
- 2:17So if you say, "Yeah, nah."
- 2:20It's like an uncertain no and vice versa.
- 2:24Because you don't want to come off too confident, you know?
- 2:28Hard.
- 2:29Now this is the opposite to the one just before.
- 2:34This is a strong agree or disagree.
- 2:37So if someone says, "Gary man, yeah he's crack up!"
- 2:41And you say, "Hard."
- 2:46Following on from that,
- 2:48not even!
- 2:49Popularised by the hit TV show Bro Town.
- 2:51Oh, not even ow!
- 2:53Not even means no way.
- 2:58Wop wops: the middle of nowhere.
- 3:01Hard Yakka. I think the Aussies use this too. Hard work.
- 3:07Bugger
- 3:08and I think Brits use this too.
- 3:11A polite swear word.
- 3:14Suss.
- 3:15Or, all sussed or it's sussed.
- 3:19To suss basically means to sort or to get sorted.
- 3:23"How's that lunch prep going?"
- 3:24You can say, "All sussed."
- 3:26So that was a bit of Kiwi slang for you.
- 3:28There are lots more out there, but I thought I'd give you the 101 for now.
- 3:42I'm hungus.
