  12. 0:21that I was having this mental breakdown
  13. 0:23they took the story in the wrong

  44. 1:33I was in New York I was shooting the
  45. 1:34crow crowded
  46. 1:36room and I was having a really hard time
  47. 1:38with the job just because of how taxing
  48. 1:40it was and I decided to delete my
  49. 1:43Instagram because I just felt like I was
  50. 1:45so addicted to this kind of false
  51. 1:47version of my life that it was just
  52. 1:49taking over I would be on set working
  53. 1:51I'd come and sit in my chair and just
  54. 1:53scroll scroll scroll scroll scroll and
  55. 1:54it was it was becoming a problem I was
  56. 1:57just obsessed with it and I was obsessed
  57. 1:59to find out what people were saying and
  58. 2:01how people what they thought about me so
  59. 2:04I decided to make an announcement and
  60. 2:06say that I'm taking a break from social
  61. 2:08media and the thing that really upset me
  62. 2:10is the Press ran with that and they
  63. 2:12tried to make out that I was having this
  64. 2:15mental breakdown and what upset me was
  65. 2:18if I was having a mental breakdown
  66. 2:20that's not for you to report
  67. 2:22[Music]
  68. 2:25on all right now let's break down the
  69. 2:27clip and learn all the advanced
  70. 2:29vocabulary in pronunciation with Tom
  71. 2:31Holland I was in New York I was shooting
  72. 2:33the crown crowded room in this context
  73. 2:36shooting means filming the crowded room
  74. 2:39we should mention here is a
  75. 2:41psychological Thriller TV series where
  76. 2:43Tom is the protagonist so he says he was
  77. 2:46having a hard time filming it meaning he
  78. 2:48was struggling it was a difficult moment
  79. 2:50for him that's a nice casual location
  80. 2:53you can use too theyes say it all the
  81. 2:55time check this out our family doesn't
  82. 2:58run from things miles
  83. 3:01yeah I
  84. 3:05know what's that about he's having a
  85. 3:07hard time Jeff and I was having a really
  86. 3:10hard time with the job just because of
  87. 3:12how taxing it was the emotional that's
  88. 3:14also what he meant by saying it was
  89. 3:16taxing it was difficult exhausting and
  90. 3:19drained his energy in Tom's case playing
  91. 3:22this intense role in this series was
  92. 3:25emotionally taxing I decided to delete
  93. 3:27my Instagram because I just felt like I
  94. 3:29was so addicted to this kind of false
  95. 3:32version of my life that it was just
  96. 3:33taking over when something takes over it
  97. 3:36takes control Tom means Instagram was
  98. 3:39taking control of his life of his
  99. 3:41thoughts and actions and it was hard to
  100. 3:42focus on his job see how he describes
  101. 3:45what he would do I would be on set
  102. 3:46working I'd come and sit in my chair and
  103. 3:48just scroll scroll scroll scroll scroll
  104. 3:50and it was this action is called
  105. 3:52scrolling it's a common expression
  106. 3:54nowadays but you should know this
  107. 3:55particular use of the verb to scroll
  108. 3:58already existed before smartphone since
  109. 4:00we also scroll on a computer using a
  110. 4:02mouse another expression that people use
  111. 4:05these days to refer to this specific
  112. 4:07negative experience of scroll scroll
  113. 4:10scroll when you're using Instagram or
  114. 4:12Tik Tok is Doom scrolling I was just
  115. 4:15obsessed with it and I was obsessed to
  116. 4:17find out what people were saying and how
  117. 4:18people what they thought about me did
  118. 4:20you notice how Tom pronounces the words
  119. 4:22that end with a t- sound let's give a
  120. 4:24listen to this part again but more
  121. 4:25slowly and I was obsessed to find out
  122. 4:29what people were saying all these words
  123. 4:31were pronounced with a stop T out what
  124. 4:36thought about natives often do this now
  125. 4:40to do a stop T sound you simply prepare
  126. 4:43to make a t- sound but then you stop the
  127. 4:45flow of air and make a short pause now
  128. 4:48try to repeat after me out what
  129. 4:53about now what else can we find here
  130. 4:56that's more advanced pronunciation well
  131. 4:58these phrases have some connected speech
  132. 5:00in them that's when natives cut link and
  133. 5:03morph fors together when they speak the
  134. 5:06word obsessed ends with a T sound
  135. 5:08obsessed and because the next word
  136. 5:11starts with a T they morph obsessed not
  137. 5:15obsessed to but obsessed to and a D from
  138. 5:19find gets linked to the vowel sound from
  139. 5:21the next word find out now let's try to
  140. 5:25repeat after a time and I was obsessed
  141. 5:27to find out what people were saying and
  142. 5:29I was obsessed to find out what people
  143. 5:32were
  144. 5:37saying and say like I'm taking a break
  145. 5:39from social media because I feel like my
  146. 5:40mental health will benefit from it and
  147. 5:43the thing that really upset me is the
  148. 5:44Press ran with that and they tried to
  149. 5:47make out that I was having this mental
  150. 5:49breakdown to run with something is a
  151. 5:52collocation that means to take an idea
  152. 5:53and develop it further without
  153. 5:55hesitation it can be used in both
  154. 5:58negative and positive context text for
  155. 6:01example a more positive situation could
  156. 6:03be she had a great idea for the project
  157. 6:05and the team ran with it meaning they
  158. 6:08developed and expanded on the idea in
  159. 6:10this case Tom is saying that the press
  160. 6:12that is magazines newspapers TV news Etc
  161. 6:16they took the story which was pretty
  162. 6:18straightforward and they changed the
  163. 6:20narrative and that's what he means by
  164. 6:22this line and they try to make out that
  165. 6:25I was having this mental breakdown in
  166. 6:28this context to make out refers to
  167. 6:30creating a certain impression or to
  168. 6:32pretend for example she's trying to make
  169. 6:34out that she's Rich so instead of
  170. 6:37focusing on the positive reason behind
  171. 6:39his decision the Press made it sound
  172. 6:41like he was having a mental breakdown a
  173. 6:44point where a person gets so stressed
  174. 6:46because of their thoughts and emotions
  175. 6:48that they collapse they stop functioning
  176. 6:50properly like when a machine breaks down
  177. 6:53and Tom was upset with the news because
  178. 6:55he was actually taking steps to avoid
  179. 6:58reaching that point of breakdown
  180. 7:00and by the way remember that you can
  181. 7:02practice all this vocabulary that you're
  182. 7:04seeing today on our own app I highly
  183. 7:06recommend you try it it's the best way
  184. 7:08for you to never forget all these words
  185. 7:10and expressions that you've been

  188. 7:15there from the app because you get a way
  189. 7:17more powerful experience just click the

  194. 7:27Play or the App Store and I hope to see
  195. 7:29you
  196. 7:33there they they took the story in the
  197. 7:36wrong direction and they Tred they
  198. 7:37painted again this negative light on
  199. 7:40Mental Health rather than saying oh he's
  200. 7:43doing it it's okay that he's doing it so
  201. 7:45we should all feel okay to do it too
  202. 7:47they were saying oh look he's not the
  203. 7:49perfect happy go-lucky kid you think he
  204. 7:51is he's having a nervous breakdown in
  205. 7:52New York and I think that that was a
  206. 7:54really unfair line of Journalism let's
  207. 7:58say yeah yeah yeah absolutely absolutely
  208. 8:00it almost sounds like you were actually
  209. 8:03preemptively going I'm doing this so
  210. 8:06that I don't right go in that direction
  211. 8:09totally at least I'm not trying to put
  212. 8:10words in your mouth but abely it's
  213. 8:12almost like I'm proactively seeing that
  214. 8:14I could end up in a position where sure
  215. 8:16I might have a breakdown I don't want to
  216. 8:17be in that position and so I'm
  217. 8:18responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
  218. 8:21break in order to protect myself 100%
  219. 8:24yeah which makes a lot of sense and
  220. 8:25actually is quite admirable again
  221. 8:30now before we continue if you are new to

  223. 8:34that every single week we make new

  229. 8:45so hit the Subscribe button and the bell
  230. 8:47down below if you don't want to miss any
  231. 8:49of our new lessons they they took the
  232. 8:51story in the wrong direction and they
  233. 8:53try they painted again this negative
  234. 8:55light on Mental Health to paint
  235. 8:57something negatively means describe or
  236. 9:00show something in a bad way it's very
  237. 9:02similar to try to make out something
  238. 9:04about a situation to paint it a certain
  239. 9:07way and he goes on to use yet another
  240. 9:09similar phrase check it out they they
  241. 9:11took the story in the wrong direction
  242. 9:13and they try they painted again this
  243. 9:16negative light on Mental Health to show
  244. 9:18someone in a bad light or negative light
  245. 9:21as he says is exactly what he's talking
  246. 9:23about and by the way you may also hear
  247. 9:25the opposite phrase in a good light they
  248. 9:28were saying oh look he's not the perfect
  249. 9:31happy go-lucky kid you think he is he's
  250. 9:32having a nervous breakdown in New York
  251. 9:35and I think that that was a really
  252. 9:37unfair line of Journalism if you call
  253. 9:40someone happy gol lucky you mean they
  254. 9:42are not concerned about the future and
  255. 9:44just enjoy life without planning Tom
  256. 9:47felt this way or method of doing
  257. 9:49journalism or as he says this line of
  258. 9:52Journalism was unfair yeah yeah
  259. 9:56absolutely absolutely it almost sounds
  260. 9:57like you were actually
  261. 10:00preemptively going I'm doing this so
  262. 10:02that I don't go in that direction if you
  263. 10:05act preemptively in a situation you're
  264. 10:08thinking ahead and doing something in
  265. 10:09advance to avoid problems for example
  266. 10:12packing the night before a trip helps
  267. 10:14you avoid rushing things in the morning
  268. 10:17you're acting preemptively in case
  269. 10:19something expected happens you have time
  270. 10:21to deal with it in a strategic context
  271. 10:24like in the military a preemptive strike
  272. 10:26is an attack launched to prevent an
  273. 10:28expected attack from the
  274. 10:31enemy how old are you Dan How old uh I'm
  275. 10:3532 you having some kind of preemptive
  276. 10:38midlife crisis oh this mom he rides a
  277. 10:41motorbike I'll take you for a ride in it
  278. 10:43sometimes you yeah yeah absolutely
  279. 10:45absolutely it almost sounds like you
  280. 10:46were actually
  281. 10:48preemptively going I'm doing this so
  282. 10:51that I don't go in that direction
  283. 10:54totally at least I'm not trying to put
  284. 10:55words in your mouth but absolutely
  285. 10:57putting words in one's mouth refers is
  286. 10:59saying that someone means one thing when
  287. 11:01the person really meant something else
  288. 11:04imagine two people having an argument
  289. 11:06you could hear something like I didn't
  290. 11:08say this don't try to put words in my
  291. 11:10mouth in this case J shett is just being
  292. 11:13respectful saying he knows Tom didn't
  293. 11:15say those words exactly but that that's
  294. 11:17what he understands from Tom's story
  295. 11:20it's almost like I'm proactively seeing
  296. 11:22that I could end up in a position where
  297. 11:23sure I might have a breakdown I don't
  298. 11:25want to be in that position and so I'm
  299. 11:26responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
  300. 11:29break
  301. 11:29in to protect myself another word we use
  302. 11:32to talk about taking action early is
  303. 11:36proactively like exercising regularly is
  304. 11:39a proactive way to maintain good health
  305. 11:41instead of just waiting until you get
  306. 11:42sick to go to the doctor it's almost
  307. 11:45like I'm proactively seeing that I could
  308. 11:47end up in a position where sure I might
  309. 11:49have a breakdown I don't want to be in
  310. 11:50that position and so I'm responsibly
  311. 11:52saying guys I'm taking a break in order
  312. 11:54to protect myself to end up means to
  313. 11:57eventually find yourself in a c certain
  314. 11:59situation often without planning it for
  315. 12:02example the movie we wanted to see was
  316. 12:04sold out there were no tickets available
  317. 12:06so we ended up seeing a different one
  318. 12:09all right I know you've been waiting for
  319. 12:10this part now we're going to test your
  320. 12:12comprehension by watching the entire
  321. 12:14clip a final time without subtitles and
  322. 12:17I'm going to ask you some quiz questions
  323. 12:19let's do
  324. 12:22[Music]
  325. 12:24this I was in New York I was shooting
  326. 12:27the crown crowded room
  327. 12:29and I was having a really hard time with
  328. 12:31the job just because of how taxing it
  329. 12:33was which word describes something that
  330. 12:35is physically or mentally difficult and
  331. 12:38exhausting shooting tasking
  332. 12:50taxing I decided to delete my Instagram
  333. 12:53because I just felt like I was so
  334. 12:55addicted to this kind of false version
  335. 12:57of my life that it was just taking over
  336. 12:59I would be on set working I'd come and
  337. 13:01sit in my chair and just scroll scroll
  338. 13:03scroll scroll scroll and it was it was
  339. 13:05becoming a problem I was just obsessed
  340. 13:07with it and I was obsessed to find out
  341. 13:09what people were saying and how people
  342. 13:11what they thought about me so I decided
  343. 13:13to make an announcement and say that I'm
  344. 13:16taking a break from social media and the
  345. 13:18thing that really upset me is the Press
  346. 13:19ran with that and they tried to make out
  347. 13:22that I was having this mental breakdown
  348. 13:25and what upset me was if I was having a
  349. 13:28mental breakdown that's not for you to
  350. 13:30report on what does the phrase run with
  351. 13:32it mean to run as fast as
  352. 13:36possible to accept an idea and develop
  353. 13:38it further to ignore instructions and do
  354. 13:41your own
  355. 13:43[Music]
  356. 13:50thing and they tried to make out that I
  357. 13:53was having this mental breakdown and
  358. 13:56what upset me was if I was having a Al
  359. 13:59breakdown that's not for you to report
  360. 14:01on they they they took the story in the
  361. 14:03wrong direction and they try they
  362. 14:04painted again this negative light on
  363. 14:07Mental Health rather than saying oh he's
  364. 14:10doing it it's okay that he's doing it so
  365. 14:12we should all feel okay to do it too
  366. 14:14they were saying oh look do you remember
  367. 14:16the phrase Tom use here meaning to make
  368. 14:19someone look bad
  369. 14:21[Music]
  370. 14:27[Music]
  371. 14:30to paint any bed
  372. 14:32light yeah yeah absolutely absolutely it
  373. 14:35almost sounds like you were actually
  374. 14:38preemptively going I'm doing this so
  375. 14:41that I don't go in that direction
  376. 14:43totally at least I'm not trying to put
  377. 14:45words in your mouth but absolutely it's
  378. 14:47almost like I'm proactively seeing that
  379. 14:49I could end up in a position where sure
  380. 14:51I might have a breakdown I don't want to
  381. 14:52be in that position and so I'm
  382. 14:53responsibly saying guys I'm taking a
  383. 14:55break in order to protect myself 100%
  384. 14:59which makes a lot of sense and actually
  385. 15:00is quite admirable again which of these
  386. 15:02actions is an example of a preemptive
  387. 15:04one putting on sunscreen when at the
  388. 15:07beach fixing a leak in your house
  389. 15:11apologizing after hurting someone's
