- 1:32buddy we better go get the car back home
- 1:34what what do you we have a few hours we
- 1:37have until six
- 1:37i'm sorry i mean i know you don't care
- 1:39but it does mean my ass
- 1:40you think i don't care i know you don't
- 1:42care
- 1:43[Music]
- 1:46oh that hurts cameron
- 1:49cameron what have you seen today nothing
- 1:52good
- 1:54nothing no nothing
- 1:57this what do you mean nothing good we've
- 2:00seen everything good we've seen the
- 2:01whole city
- 2:03and now the analysis it's getting late
- 2:05buddy we better go get the car back home
- 2:07okay a pretty long thought group here
- 2:09everything glides together
- 2:10smoothly let's just look at the first
- 2:13four words
- 2:14what are our stress syllables there it's
- 2:16getting late buddy
- 2:18it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 2:19late buddy it's getting
- 2:21a little bit of stress there it's
- 2:23getting
- 2:24late buddy
- 2:27it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 2:30late buddy
- 2:31it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 2:33late buddy it's getting late buddy
- 2:35we have a couple reductions happening
- 2:37here the word it's
- 2:39is reduced the vowel is dropped so it's
- 2:42just the ts
- 2:43cluster linking into the g now with
- 2:46these
- 2:46ing endings it's pretty common for
- 2:50native speakers in the more common words
- 2:53in more casual
- 2:54situations to change the ng sound
- 2:58which is made at the back of the tongue
- 3:00to just an n
- 3:01sound which is made with the front of
- 3:04the tongue lifting
- 3:05so getting becomes gettin
- 3:08get now why does the t
- 3:12change if i don't change the consonant
- 3:14if it's an ing
- 3:15ending then it's a flap t getting
- 3:17getting getting
- 3:19but if i change it to an n this becomes
- 3:21a stop t getting
- 3:23get get
- 3:29there's a rule about t followed by schwa
- 3:32and n and how that t becomes a stop t
- 3:37that's an exception to the rule because
- 3:40here in the first syllable we have
- 3:41g and e as in bed and the rule is when a
- 3:45t comes between two vowels it's a flap t
- 3:47but the exception is when it's t schwa n
- 3:50then it's a stop t and that's what's
- 3:52happening here so it would maybe be
- 3:54written in ipa with the it as in sit
- 3:56and n ending rather than schwa
- 4:00but they act the same when they're
- 4:01unstressed so
- 4:03if we change the ing to an n and the
- 4:06final sound was a t
- 4:07sound with a vowel before it becomes
- 4:10getting
- 4:12getting
- 4:15another example would be the word
- 4:16hitting h-i-t-t-i-n-g
- 4:20hitting with a flap t but if we drop the
- 4:22g and make it an n then it's hitting
- 4:24hitting hit stop t so
- 4:28we have a dropped it in it's
- 4:31we have a stop t and the ending changes
- 4:34to n
- 4:34getting get get
- 4:38so put your tongue into position for the
- 4:40t stop your air
- 4:41get then you don't need to move your
- 4:44tongue it's in position for the end just
- 4:46make the n sound
- 4:48getting getting it's getting
- 4:51it's getting it's getting late it's
- 4:53getting late
- 4:54it's getting late buddy
- 4:57it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 4:59late buddy it's getting late buddy
- 5:01in this stress word late we also have a
- 5:02stop t that's because the next word
- 5:04begins with a consonant
- 5:06it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 5:08late buddy
- 5:09it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 5:11late buddy now let's talk about these
- 5:13d's
- 5:14the d sound d is the stop of air and
- 5:17release
- 5:18but d but d but that's not how we
- 5:21pronounce it between vowels
- 5:22here it comes between the vowel uh as in
- 5:25butter and e
- 5:26as in she a d sound between vowels is
- 5:29flapped
- 5:30so it's not bad d but it's
- 5:36buddy
- 5:38it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 5:40late buddy
- 5:41it's getting late buddy it's getting
- 5:43late buddy we better go get the car back
- 5:45home
- 5:45we better go get the car
- 5:48back home the stressed syllable of
- 5:52better
- 5:53stress there we better go get
- 5:56the car back home
- 6:00so we have three syllables there that
- 6:01are longer the rest are lower in pitch
- 6:04so it's not
- 6:05we but it's we we we better
- 6:09we better we better be better we better
- 6:12we want it to feel unstressed next to
- 6:14the stressed syllable
- 6:16if i didn't do that it would be we
- 6:18better we better go
- 6:20get the car back home well that's not
- 6:22how we speak at all
- 6:23we really need that contrast we we
- 6:26we better we better we better
- 6:30be better we better do you notice that
- 6:32the t sound here is a flap
- 6:35just like the d between two consonants
- 6:38the t between two consonants is also a
- 6:41flap
- 6:42better better unless we've already seen
- 6:44an exception here
- 6:45unless it's part of the t schwa n
- 6:47sequence then it's a stop
- 6:49but in this word it's not so it's better
- 6:51better
- 6:52buddy buddy it's a flap
- 6:55we better go get we better go get
- 6:59we better go get we better go we better
- 7:02go get so the second syllable of better
- 7:06and go get the those are all flatter
- 7:09lower in pitch just like we go get the
- 7:13gogeta we better go get we better go get
- 7:17we better go get get the do you notice
- 7:20that stop t there don't release it
- 7:22get the you just stop the air in your
- 7:25throat
- 7:26very quickly before moving on to the
- 7:27next sound get the
- 7:29get the get the better go get the
- 7:33better go get better go get better go
- 7:36get the car back home
- 7:37car back comb car back comb
- 7:41back has a little bit of length too even
- 7:42though it doesn't have
- 7:44the up down shape that car does that
- 7:46would be car back home
- 7:48but it's car back home car back home
- 7:51car back home car back home car back
- 7:55home
- 7:55what what what we hear this faintly in
- 7:59the background it's the woman sitting in
- 8:00the car
- 8:01what pitch going up she's asking what
- 8:05why why on earth would we need to get
- 8:07the car back home it's not getting late
- 8:09what stop t at the end
- 8:12what do you mean
- 8:17he starts to say the phrase what do you
- 8:20mean
- 8:21what do you and he makes the m but he
- 8:23doesn't say the rest of the word
- 8:25william william so i'm gonna put an m
- 8:28here at the end
- 8:29what do you what
- 8:32okay so what's happening with what and
- 8:34do this is pretty common when
- 8:36a word that ends in t like what is
- 8:39followed by
- 8:40a d that we drop the t sound and just
- 8:43link it in
- 8:46so you can think of it as the uh as in
- 8:48butter or the schwa depending on how
- 8:50quickly you're making it
- 8:51what what what what what
- 9:00then this is going to be a flap because
- 9:01it comes between
- 9:03two vowels
- 9:08of these vowels reduced to the schwa
- 9:09it's not what do
- 9:11you it's what do you mean
- 9:15what do you want to do what do you think
- 9:18pretty common to pronounce these three
- 9:20words this way what are you what are you
- 9:22what are you simplify your mouth
- 9:24movement move
- 9:25quickly what do you what do you try to
- 9:27relax everything
- 9:28practice that just those three words
- 9:30what are you
- 9:31what are you and then you can do a
- 9:33stressed word after
- 9:35what do you think what do you mean
- 9:38what do you need this is how we speak
- 9:41natural
- 9:41conversational american english
- 9:44what do you have a few hours we
- 9:48have a few hours
- 9:51we have a few stress
- 9:54on have hours stress on hours but he's
- 9:58making the pitch go up
- 10:00so rather than an up down shape it's a
- 10:03down
- 10:03up shape hours we have
- 10:07a few hours but everything really links
- 10:11together smoothly doesn't it
- 10:13we have a few hours we have a few hours
- 10:16we have a few hours we have a few
- 10:21uh and few and we they're all less
- 10:23stressed just put them into the line
- 10:26have a few hours
- 10:31no skips or breaks we have a few hours
- 10:34hours notice the h in this word is
- 10:37silent
- 10:38we have a few hours we have a few hours
- 10:42we have a few hours we have a few hours
- 10:45we have until six we have until six
- 10:48stressing the verb we have
- 10:51until six and the time
- 10:55we have until six we have until six
- 10:58we have until six we have until six we
- 11:01have until six
- 11:02we have until six make sure you're
- 11:06imitating that smoothness
- 11:08in the change of pitch
- 11:13we have until six we have until six we
- 11:16have until six
- 11:17no reductions here notice the t
- 11:20in until is a true t that's because it
- 11:24starts a stressed syllable
- 11:25until six the letter x
- 11:29here makes the k
- 11:32s cluster six six we have until six
- 11:36we have until six we have until six we
- 11:39have until six
- 11:40i'm sorry i mean i know you don't care
- 11:42but it does mean my ass
- 11:43another long thought group here i'm
- 11:46sorry
- 11:47i'm sorry that's the loudest syllable in
- 11:51this phrase
- 11:52i'm sorry i mean i know you don't care
- 11:57so we have a little up i'll know a
- 11:59little up down on carob
- 12:00i know you don't care i'm sorry i mean i
- 12:04know you don't care
- 12:05i'm sorry i mean i know you don't care
- 12:07i'm sorry i mean i know you don't care
- 12:09i'm sorry i mean i mean i mean
- 12:12these two words actually these three
- 12:15words
- 12:15lower in pitch a little bit less volume
- 12:19flatter
- 12:19i mean i i mean i i mean i i mean i know
- 12:23i mean i know
- 12:25i mean i know i mean i know that flat
- 12:27contrasts with
- 12:28sar and no i'm sorry i mean
- 12:33i should have included this unstressed
- 12:34syllable here into that
- 12:36sar
- 12:40because the unstressed syllable of the
- 12:42stressed word also has an unstressed
- 12:44feel
- 12:44so we have one two three four unstressed
- 12:48syllables in a row
- 12:49between our stressed syllables i'm sorry
- 12:52i mean i
- 12:52i mean i i mean i i mean i yeah i mean i
- 12:56try to make it really that low and that
- 12:59simple with your mouth movements i'm
- 13:01sorry i mean
- 13:02i'm sorry i mean i'm sorry i mean i know
- 13:05you don't care i
- 13:06know you don't care so
- 13:09you and don't also unstress between our
- 13:12more stressed words and the word you
- 13:14reduces again it's not you just like
- 13:16before here it's
- 13:17yeah i know you don't care
- 13:21i know you don't care i know you don't
- 13:23care i know you don't care
- 13:24super subtle lift here don't care don't
- 13:29stop t it's a little bit nasally because
- 13:31of the n
- 13:33i know you don't care don't care don't
- 13:36care
- 13:36i know you don't care i know you don't
- 13:38care i know you don't care but it
- 13:40doesn't mean my ass
- 13:41but it does mean my ass so we have
- 13:44stress on does
- 13:47and ass but it said really quickly
- 13:50flat low in pitch but it but it but it
- 13:53but it
- 13:53they link together with a flap but it
- 13:56but it but it
- 13:57this t is a stock t because the next
- 13:59word begins with a consonant
- 14:00but it does but it does but it does
- 14:04but it does but it does does make sure
- 14:06you're not saying
- 14:08that is not an s that is a z sound does
- 14:12does but it does mean my mean my
- 14:16mean my lower end pitch flatter mean
- 14:19my yes link these two words together
- 14:23really smoothly
- 14:24it's an i diphthong and the ah vowel
- 14:28sometimes it's a challenge for my
- 14:29students to link to vowel or diphthong
- 14:31sounds together
- 14:32my yes you can think of going through
- 14:36the glide consonant y
- 14:39that might help you connect them more
- 14:40smoothly so what does this
- 14:42phrase mean it means my ass that means
- 14:45i'm the one who's going to be in trouble
- 14:47not you
- 14:48me but it does mean my ass but it does
- 14:52mean my ass
- 14:53but it does mean my ass you think i
- 14:55don't care he's amazed he can't believe
- 14:57it
- 14:58what is his stress here what are the
- 15:00most stressed words
- 15:02you think i don't care you think i don't
- 15:04care
- 15:05you think i don't care you think i don't
- 15:08care definitely stress on think you
- 15:12think i don't care and stress on care
- 15:16it's going up
- 15:17you think now hear the word you doesn't
- 15:20reduce it's not you it
- 15:21it's not yeah yeah it's you but it is
- 15:25flattering pitch it's not you
- 15:26think it's not stressed it's you you
- 15:29you you you think you think
- 15:32you think i don't two unstressed words
- 15:36again
- 15:36you think i don't care
- 15:40you think i don't care you think i don't
- 15:42care
- 15:43you think i don't care don't care don't
- 15:46care again a subtle little break here
- 15:49while we stop the air for that stop t i
- 15:52don't care
- 15:53i don't care i don't care i don't care
- 15:57i don't care i know you don't care oh
- 16:00that's a harsh response
- 16:01what's his stress i know you don't care
- 16:04i know you don't care i know you don't
- 16:07care
- 16:08i know you don't care
- 16:11care has stress but he's not putting it
- 16:13up as a question
- 16:15so his pitch goes down i know
- 16:18you don't care i know you don't care
- 16:21i know you don't care i know you don't
- 16:23care
- 16:24i know you don't care again don't care
- 16:28don't care little stop t there i know
- 16:30you don't care
- 16:31i know you don't care i know you don't
- 16:34care
- 16:35i know you don't care
- 16:36[Music]
- 16:38oh that hurts cameron oh
- 16:42oh up down shape oh
- 16:45that hurts cameron that hurts
- 16:50cameron hurts the verb most stressed
- 16:54there
- 16:55oh that hurts cameron oh that hurts
- 16:59cameron
- 17:00oh that hurts cameron that
- 17:04hurts do you notice that stop t there
- 17:06that
- 17:07hurts now let's talk about this word for
- 17:09a second
- 17:10h consonant er vowel
- 17:15r combination ts cluster
- 17:19a lot of my students get confused with
- 17:21this they want to do something like huts
- 17:23or they want to put some sort of vowel
- 17:25in before an r
- 17:26but this sound is so influenced by the r
- 17:29that it's just all the same
- 17:31sound
- 17:37now to make the sound you don't really
- 17:38need jaw drop just put your tongue into
- 17:40position for the r
- 17:41er tip is pulled back and up it's not
- 17:44touching anything
- 17:46err her hurts
- 17:50hurts that hurts that hurts
- 17:54cameron that hurts cameron that hurts
- 17:58cameron
- 17:59that hurts cameron the word cameron just
- 18:02like
- 18:02camera could be pronounced potentially
- 18:05with that middle syllable but he doesn't
- 18:07he leaves it out camera cameron this is
- 18:11a more common pronunciation so right
- 18:13from
- 18:13m into r cam rin cameron
- 18:17cameron cameron cameron
- 18:22cameron what have you seen today cameron
- 18:25cameron
- 18:29a little up shape at the end cameron
- 18:32again dropping that middle syllable
- 18:34cameron cameron cameron
- 18:37cameron what have you seen today what
- 18:39have you seen today
- 18:41the question word get some stress what
- 18:44have you
- 18:45seen today today
- 18:48now be careful with this word a lot of
- 18:50people want to say two day
- 18:52two day two day that is not the ooh
- 18:54vowel look it up in the dictionary
- 18:55you'll see the schwa
- 18:58today today today what have you seen
- 19:01today
- 19:02what have you seen today what have you
- 19:04seen today
- 19:05what have you what have you
- 19:09okay so the word you does not reduce
- 19:12it's you
- 19:13not yeah but it is unstressed you you
- 19:16the word have does reduce he drops the h
- 19:21now we have a t between vowels so that
- 19:24becomes a flap t
- 19:25linking them what of what of what is
- 19:30w consonant a
- 19:34vowel flap t linking and then have is
- 19:38reduced to just
- 19:39schwa v what of what of what of
- 19:42what of you what have you seen what have
- 19:45you seen today
- 19:47what have you seen today what have you
- 19:49seen today
- 19:50what have you seen today nothing good
- 19:53nothing good nothing good
- 19:58he's being a little sassy here they've
- 20:00had a lot of fun that day
- 20:02nothing good making the pitch go
- 20:06up a little bit at the end nothing good
- 20:09nothing good nothing good sort of shows
- 20:12that sassiness
- 20:13nothing did you notice it's not nothing
- 20:16nothing
- 20:17nothing so he's changed the ng
- 20:20ending to just an n ending
- 20:23nothing nothing nothing
- 20:28nothing another thing i want to just say
- 20:31about ing endings
- 20:33so i n g
- 20:36written in ipa e
- 20:40i n written in ipa
- 20:44however when the vowel is followed by ng
- 20:48that vowel changes it's actually a lot
- 20:51more like
- 20:52e like in the word ring or sing
- 20:56that's not ring or sing
- 20:59so that ng consonant changes the vowel
- 21:03so if we have an ing ending and
- 21:06we change the ng sound to an n sound
- 21:10we not only change the consonant but we
- 21:12change the vowel as well it goes from
- 21:13sounding
- 21:14like e to sounding more like if so
- 21:17nothing
- 21:18in in instead of nothing
- 21:21nothing nothing nothing good
- 21:25nothing good nothing good nothing good
- 21:29nothing good light release of the d
- 21:33don't make it good that's too much good
- 21:36good good really light
- 21:40good good good
- 21:45nothing okay
- 21:48so we're not gonna go through the
- 21:51pronunciation of this he's just sort of
- 21:53in disbelief um just sort of saying
- 21:57little
- 21:57beginnings of words but not actually
- 21:59completing any of them he can't believe
- 22:01it
- 22:02nothing
- 22:05this what do you mean nothing good what
- 22:08do you
- 22:09mean nothing good
- 22:12up down shape on our question word what
- 22:15do you
- 22:16mean nothing good
- 22:20what do you mean nothing good what do
- 22:22you mean nothing good
- 22:24what do you mean nothing good what do
- 22:26you
- 22:27again we have that
- 22:30reduction don't we it's not what do you
- 22:33but it's
- 22:33what ya what do you mean what do you
- 22:36mean
- 22:37what do you mean actually it's what a
- 22:40you
- 22:40so he reduces the vowel in due to the
- 22:43schwa
- 22:44but he doesn't reduce it in you it is
- 22:46still unstressed so this can be
- 22:49what do you or what what are you
- 22:52what are ya so the first time we heard
- 22:54it as wordia now here it's
- 22:57what do you what do you what are you
- 22:58what are you what matters is that that
- 23:00is unstressed
- 23:01now you can choose to do you or ya
- 23:04totally up to you if you want to work
- 23:07this
- 23:08phrase into your conversational english
- 23:10and you want to practice it
- 23:12you can choose if you want to reduce
- 23:14that vowel or not just really practice
- 23:16what do you what do you or what do you
- 23:19what do you
- 23:20practice that smoothness and the stress
- 23:22the firsts were distressed
- 23:24the other two words said very quickly
- 23:26that's what's important here to sound
- 23:27natural
- 23:28both vowels are okay what do you what
- 23:31are you
- 23:31what do you what do you mean what do you
- 23:34mean
- 23:35what do you mean what do you mean mean
- 23:38nothing good mean
- 23:41nothing two words same sound linking
- 23:45them together
- 23:46mean nothing just a single n sound to
- 23:49link
- 23:50nothing nothing okay so ah as in butter
- 23:53vowel
- 23:55unvoiced th your tongue tip has to come
- 23:57through nothing
- 23:58nothing let's take a look at his mouth
- 24:00position for that sound
- 24:01what do you mean
- 24:05nothing good nothing good now here he
- 24:08does not change
- 24:10the ing ending to i n so it is
- 24:14e as in she ing sound nothing nothing
- 24:17nothing good
- 24:19nothing good
- 24:23right from the ng sound into the g sound
- 24:26no break
- 24:26all connected nothing good
- 24:29nothing good nothing good we've seen
- 24:32everything good
- 24:34we've seen everything good
- 24:37so the words we've and seen two
- 24:41unstressed syllables leading up to that
- 24:42peak of pitch
- 24:44ev on the first syllable here
- 24:47everything good and then some more
- 24:50stress there
- 24:52we've seen everything good and it all
- 24:54links together
- 24:55the v sound is very subtle we've seen
- 25:00very subtle and fast there we've seen
- 25:03we've seen we've seen think of it as a
- 25:07word
- 25:07not two words that's how linked together
- 25:09it needs to be
- 25:11we've seen everything
- 25:14you can think of this word as being
- 25:17everything
- 25:18neverything if that helps you connect
- 25:21the two words
- 25:22we've seen everything
- 25:25good we've seen everything good we've
- 25:28seen everything good
- 25:29we've seen everything good thing
- 25:33unvoiced th it as in sit
- 25:36ng ending so the vowel is more like e
- 25:40every good
- 25:44and again linking right into the g sound
- 25:47everything good
- 25:49everything good everything good
- 25:51everything good we've seen the whole
- 25:53city
- 25:54we've seen the whole city
- 25:57stress on scene again weave it's
- 26:00unstressed it's just
- 26:01leading up to that stress syllable we've
- 26:04seen the
- 26:05whole whole
- 26:09city some stress on whole
- 26:12more stress on si city so we see the
- 26:15letter c
- 26:16but of course it's the s consonant
- 26:19first syllable stress city flap t
- 26:23because it comes between two vowels we
- 26:25flap it i've been writing that with the
- 26:26d
- 26:27symbol because the t between vowels
- 26:30sounds just like the d
- 26:31between vowels city city city
- 26:34we've seen the whole city we've seen the
- 26:38whole city
- 26:39we've seen the whole city we've seen the
- 26:41whole city
- 26:42whole silent w
- 26:46we've seen the whole city
- 26:50we've seen the whole city we've seen the
- 26:52whole city
- 26:53we've seen the whole city we've seen the
- 26:56whole
- 26:56city i want to talk about the l here
- 27:00whole city that's a dark l because it
- 27:03comes
- 27:04after the diphthong sound in that
- 27:06syllable
- 27:07that would be pronounced or written in
- 27:08ipa h
- 27:11o diphthong l whole whole
- 27:14now because the next word begins with a
- 27:15consonant we
- 27:17can get away with not lifting the tongue
- 27:19tip and actually that's what you want to
- 27:21do if you lift your tongue tip for this
- 27:22l
- 27:23it will bring the sound more forward and
- 27:26it will probably
- 27:27take too long we just went
- 27:32also the dark girl really changes that
- 27:34diphthong doesn't it it's not
- 27:36ho ho so the diphthong isn't pure it's
- 27:40whole sort of a funny dark sound the
- 27:45lips around some the back of the tongue
- 27:47presses down
- 27:48and back whole city
- 27:51before we go into the s sound we've seen
- 27:54the whole
- 27:55city we've seen the whole city we've
- 27:58seen the whole city
- 28:00we've seen the whole city let's listen
- 28:02to this whole conversation one more time
- 28:04it's getting late buddy we better go get
- 28:05the car back home what do you we have a
- 28:08few hours
- 28:09we have until six i'm sorry i mean i
- 28:11know you don't care but it does mean my
- 28:12ass
- 28:13you think i don't care i know you don't
- 28:15care
- 28:16[Music]
- 28:18oh that hurts cameron
- 28:21cameron what have you seen today nothing
- 28:24good
- 28:26nothing no nothing
- 28:29this what do you mean nothing good we've
- 28:32seen everything good we've seen the
- 28:33whole city
- 28:35now for the fun part you'll look at the
- 28:37notes we took together
- 28:39and you'll hear a part of the
- 28:40conversation on a loop three times
- 28:42then there's a space for you to repeat
- 28:45for example
- 28:46you'll hear this maybe so sir maybe so
- 28:49sorry
- 28:49maybe so sorry then you'll repeat it
- 28:52maybe so sir
- 28:53try to imitate everything about this
- 28:55exactly
- 28:56so when you see this
- 29:00then you'll repeat it maybe so sir
- 29:03that's
- 29:04from top gun maverick which was the
- 29:06first movie we studied in this summer
- 29:08series
- 29:09you'll also have the opportunity to
- 29:11listen and repeat in slow motion
- 29:13this will be important for you if you're
- 29:14more of a beginner or if you're having a
- 29:17hard time
- 29:17focusing on linking or the melody
- 29:21maybe you'll want to do it both ways but
- 29:23the important thing is
- 29:24here is your opportunity to take what
- 29:26you learned
- 29:27and put it into your body and your own
- 29:30habit
- 29:31that's what's going to transform your
- 29:32speaking you might do well to work with
- 29:35the audio section of this video
- 29:36every day for a week imitating the
- 29:39rhythm and the simplifications
- 29:41will get easier each time you do it if
- 29:44you can't keep up with the native
- 29:45speaker
- 29:46do the slow motion imitation okay here's
- 29:49our audio training section
- 29:53it's getting late buddy it's getting
