3. 0:04some other case and you're probably
4. 0:05talking [ __ ] but I love the way it
5. 0:07sounds right that's what people like
6. 0:09about me am I telling you the truth I
7. 0:12really don't even know but I can deliver
8. 0:14it sometimes okay so so so so so so so
9. 0:19uh I've got Lawrence Singleton and the
10. 0:22attempted murder of Mary
11. 0:25Vincent um I don't really have much on
12. 0:28Lawrence besides he was born in Tampa
13. 0:31Florida in the
14. 0:341927 July 28th
15. 0:371927 um and he worked as a merchant
16. 0:39Seaman in California which seems like a
17. 0:41pretty boring job I I'm going to be
18. 0:44honest I don't even know what that means
19. 0:46you just hang out on a ship it's those
20. 0:48huge like cargo ships that just take
21. 0:52those big like metal crates that's some
22. 0:54people's stuff from one place to another
23. 0:58you're stuck on a ship but that may have
24. 1:00been for the best he probably should
25. 1:01have just stayed away from people so
26. 1:04whoops I hit my
27. 1:07microphone okay it's uh September 29th
28. 1:131978 Mary
29. 1:15Vincent is hitchhiking to Berkeley
30. 1:19California from Nevada cuz her parents
31. 1:22worked in you know the cinos in Las
32. 1:24Vegas and she was like you know it's the
33. 1:2870s I don't want to live my life life
34. 1:30here this stinks where do you go in the
35. 1:3270s you go to Southern California you go
36. 1:35to California so and you do hit Tri
37. 1:37there that's right yeah now I found a
38. 1:40whole lot of information that was
39. 1:42different in every single Source
40. 1:45interesting so I
41. 1:47found like some stories that sounded
42. 1:49really good other stories that just
43. 1:51sounded like why why did this story even
44. 1:55start if this was the case it seemed
45. 1:58like so stupid tell good stories then so
46. 2:01I mean I kind of stripped it down okay
47. 2:03to like
48. 2:05so Singleton picks up Mary she's only 15
49. 2:09years old that sounds right sure so like
50. 2:11one of the stories started that Mary was
51. 2:14with her boyfriend and Lawrence stopped
52. 2:17and he was like I only have room for one
53. 2:19passenger but he was driving a van and
54. 2:22it was empty it was just him I've not
55. 2:25heard that version I thought she was
56. 2:27traveling alone yeah I could be wrong
57. 2:29though I'm just going to if she was
58. 2:30traveling alone so all right uh
59. 2:33Singleton picks up Mary Vincent and uh
60. 2:36she just dozes off I don't know how you
61. 2:38get into a stranger's vehicle and you
62. 2:40end up just going to sleep it's the 70s
63. 2:42you trust everyone pretty much so she
64. 2:46came to and she realized that they were
65. 2:48heading in the wrong direction so she
66. 2:50starts freaking out and she's like We're
67. 2:53going the wrong way you missed an
68. 2:54important turn off apparently and he's
69. 2:57like all right calm down I just wasn't
70. 2:59paying attention so I guess he turns
71. 3:01around and they start going the right
72. 3:03way
73. 3:05again she dozes off again smart and he's
74. 3:09like I need to pull over because I need
75. 3:10to pee which is fair yeah he's like I
76. 3:15can't wait until we get to the next rest
77. 3:17stop so she's like fine he gets out to
78. 3:20pee she follows because she needs some
79. 3:23fresh air well you know somehow he
80. 3:26sneaks up on her and knocks her out I
81. 3:28saw in certain places is that it was
82. 3:30with a sledgehammer but I find that hard
83. 3:32to believe I feel like you just [ __ ]
84. 3:34kill
85. 3:35someone that's fair I feel like the
86. 3:37story I've heard is that he did like hit
87. 3:38her with a sledgehammer but I've never
88. 3:40like I never like I didn't stop to think
89. 3:43about it you know well you have to I
90. 3:45mean no if someone if someone hit you
91. 3:47with a regular Hammer I'm assuming it
92. 3:50was over the head to knock them out well
93. 3:53you could very easily kill someone with
94. 3:55just a regular Hammer maybe it was a
95. 3:57gentle
96. 3:58tap have you ever held a
97. 4:01sledgehammer probably
98. 4:06not okay anyways things just kept going
99. 4:10downhill for Mary because she was tied
100. 4:13up thrown into the back of the van and
101. 4:15raped repeatedly pretty much all
102. 4:18night so then he stops the vehicle this
103. 4:22is later on down the road okay literally
104. 4:25just down the road sure pulls her out of
105. 4:28the van she's laying on the side of the
106. 4:30road and he proceeds to start hacking
107. 4:32off her arms like just above the forearm
108. 4:35area so she's bleeding out he's assuming
109. 4:38that she's going to die so he takes her
110. 4:42down a cliff it's about like 30t I saw
111. 4:45some places where he just left her some
112. 4:48sources were like he just kind of rolled
113. 4:50her down the hill and was like she's
114. 4:52going to die I'm just going to leave
115. 4:55another source was like she got stuffed
116. 4:57into a sewer pipe that way no one would
117. 4:59see weird so I don't know I think I've
118. 5:01heard a different version than two of
119. 5:03those are what you've heard really but
120. 5:06maybe I'm getting to ahead of myself so
121. 5:07I'll let you keep talking and then okay
122. 5:09if you don't tell what I think I heard
123. 5:10I'm going to share it anyways because it
124. 5:12makes the story more interesting even if
125. 5:13it's a lie that's fair all right so
126. 5:17anyways uh she she's in a a ditch a
127. 5:21large ditch regardless of how it happens
128. 5:24and he drives off um she does not die
129. 5:28she's bleeding out and she's naked so
130. 5:31what do you do to stop the bleeding on
131. 5:32your Stumpy arms that are left you just
132. 5:35Ram them into the mud sure okay you know
133. 5:37so no you didn't go too far the what
134. 5:39I've heard uhhuh is that she willingly
135. 5:42like went down the cliff to get away
136. 5:43from him but like w he like hacked off
137. 5:45one arm and she tried to fight back with
138. 5:47the other and like had a grip on his
139. 5:49shoulder or something and then he like
140. 5:50went for the other arm but then her like
141. 5:52her hand grip was still holding on to
142. 5:54him I don't know the validity of that
143. 5:56story that was just what I think it was
144. 5:59like based on the story it might have
145. 6:02been
146. 6:03like like in one of those TV shows where
147. 6:07okay I mean it would make for a good
148. 6:09picture I can see like the arms like a
149. 6:10reenactment yeah I don't know I might
150. 6:13just be talking hor [ __ ] who knows okay
151. 6:16but just imagine
152. 6:18that okay so now she's she got up to her
153. 6:22feet her her stumps are all muddy and
154. 6:25bloody and she's still naked just I just
155. 6:29imagine she just looks like a horror
156. 6:30show right now and from some of the
157. 6:33sources that I saw she climbed up out of
158. 6:36the the ditch that she was in and she's
159. 6:38walking down the road and she actually
160. 6:40encounters people that just look at her
161. 6:42and they're like no thanks well that was
162. 6:46both of our thoughts polite so about 3
163. 6:50miles down the road she finally finds
164. 6:52some people
165. 6:54that uh give a [ __ ] I guess and they
166. 6:59take her to the
167. 7:00hospital so what would you
168. 7:02do I don't
169. 7:04know I assume it's 2020 and I have a
170. 7:07cell phone and I can just call the
171. 7:08police I would probably just stop and I
172. 7:10would just be like let's get you some
173. 7:13help I probably wouldn't be like get in
174. 7:16my car right well I don't want to I it's
175. 7:20going to sound insensitive say that I
176. 7:21don't want to clean up that mess yeah
177. 7:22you're not going of get that out all
178. 7:24that mud and blood and I don't know also
179. 7:28though I've had almost at my like
180. 7:30parents house when I still live with um
181. 7:33a guy stopped along the side of the road
182. 7:34in Winter one time clearly with a broken
183. 7:36down car or something and he was trying
184. 7:38to flag me down and I was like no [ __ ]
185. 7:41politeness you're a man you're dangerous
186. 7:43I'm going to keep driving and then I
187. 7:44told my dad and my dad's like that's
188. 7:46fine you shouldn't stop for man that's
189. 7:47not your problem like thank you Dad but
190. 7:49at the same time one time when I got my
191. 7:51car stuck in Winter I willingly got in
192. 7:53some strange man's truck and he was
193. 7:54going to drive me
194. 7:56home okay that's pretty dangerous I
195. 7:59survived this time turned out though
196. 8:03that where my car was they told me I
197. 8:04couldn't keep it there I was like no
198. 8:06thanks for the offer but I'm going to
199. 8:08stick with my car until I can figure it
200. 8:09out cuz they're going to tell me in like
201. 8:1210 ft deep snow yeah that's an
202. 8:15exaggeration but all right I'll shut up
203. 8:17I never would have guessed that that's
204. 8:18an exaggeration 10 ft of snow mhm we
205. 8:21don't live in I don't know alas even
206. 8:24have 10t of snow I don't know I've never
207. 8:27been there I don't [ __ ] think so

209. 8:32could anywh who uh in the hospital or
210. 8:37out of the hospital I'm not exactly sure
211. 8:40uh she ends up giving a detailed uh
212. 8:43description of Lawrence to a sketch
213. 8:46artist which was pretty much everywhere
214. 8:49and then he was recognized by one of his
215. 8:51neighbors and arrested it was pretty
216. 8:55uneventful the way that went down um so
217. 8:59he was sentenced to 14 years in prison
218. 9:02which was the max Allowed by California
219. 9:04law at the
220. 9:06time the judge though that was over the
221. 9:08case was like you know if I had the
222. 9:10power I'd send him away for the rest of
223. 9:11his natural life but he wasn't allowed
224. 9:13to do that um isn't it I'm interrupting
225. 9:17but isn't it kind of because he didn't
226. 9:19actually murder her because she survived
227. 9:22even though clearly intent was probably
228. 9:23to murder maybe I don't know I could
229. 9:27again just be talking I think California
230. 9:29laws were kind of just pulled back at
231. 9:32the time because later on there is a law
232. 9:35passed because of him oh yeah okay I was
233. 9:38getting there I was getting there and I
234. 9:39said I'm interrupting unbelievable okay
235. 9:44probably won't be the last time now this
236. 9:46is a part that I don't really understand
237. 9:48because there was a civil judgment that
238. 9:50Mary Vincent won against him for two and
239. 9:52a half million dollar but she would she
240. 9:55never got paid for it because he was
241. 9:59like unemployed in poor health and said
242. 10:02he only had like $200 to his name I
243. 10:05don't understand how any of that
244. 10:08works maybe it's one of those things
245. 10:10where like if you are working your pay
246. 10:12slowly gets docked over time until it's
247. 10:15paid out it doesn't have to be like all
248. 10:18upfront I don't know sure but I don't
249. 10:21know either okay like go to prison for
250. 10:2314 years but you owe this girl like $200
251. 10:26million figured out $200 million what
252. 10:28did you 2 million two and a half I
253. 10:31rounded up okay so we're actually going
254. 10:34to be rounding down because he was
255. 10:36paroled after only eight years in prison
256. 10:40good behavior
257. 10:41bud but there's probably less
258. 10:43opportunity to hacksaw people's arms off
259. 10:46yeah he was a teaching assistant too he
260. 10:48was a good

263. 10:52okay but okay so he was paroled to uh I
264. 10:57don't know if I'm going to say this
265. 10:58right but cont Costa County California
266. 11:01sure whatever um except anywhere he
267. 11:05tried to go there were
268. 11:07protests imagine you know people didn't
269. 11:10want this guy around so he ended up
270. 11:12having to stay on a trailer on the
271. 11:14grounds of the San Quinton state prison
272. 11:16for the rest of his time onom baby yeah
273. 11:20so he just lived in a like a single wide
274. 11:22trailer on Prison ground sounds nice
275. 11:25like a real [ __ ] boss so he had had
276. 11:29this weird problem where everything that
277. 11:32he did wrong he would twist it around in
278. 11:34his head and make himself believe that
279. 11:37he did nothing
280. 11:38wrong okay so the entire time he was on
281. 11:41trial he
282. 11:42legitimately didn't understand why he
283. 11:45was in
284. 11:46trouble I don't know how you do that
285. 11:48some form of Personality Disorder yeah
286. 11:50and I don't know what that is I was
287. 11:52hoping you could shed some light on it
288. 11:53but guess
289. 11:55not no I'm not like a licensed
290. 11:57psychologist my goodness
291. 11:59just cuz I read a few
292. 12:01textbooks okay whatever all right
293. 12:05so on that subject the County prosecutor
294. 12:07at Singleton's trial says this is a
295. 12:10quote he has not taken responsibility he
296. 12:13lives in a bizarre fantasy land and equ
297. 12:14quits himself each day he doesn't accept
298. 12:16his guilt and won't resolve never to do
299. 12:19it
300. 12:20again that last part's a little hard to
301. 12:22say but pretty much he just doesn't get
302. 12:25it and you'll see that later too um so
303. 12:29after
304. 12:30this um is whenever the Singleton bill
305. 12:34was introduced which introduced the 25
306. 12:36years to life sentence in California so
307. 12:39I think there was so much uproar over
308. 12:41his release and the fact that he wasn't
309. 12:44just put away for life to begin with was
310. 12:47just
311. 12:49crazy oh I also um Mary Vincent was at
312. 12:53the trial mhm she kind of seems like a
313. 12:56badass but he uh finished his parole up
314. 13:00and he moved back to Florida and he's
315. 13:02living with his
316. 13:03brother but um in 1990 he was convicted
317. 13:07of theft twice for get this a $10
318. 13:12disposable camera and a $3
319. 13:15hat
320. 13:17huh interesting so that landed him 60
321. 13:20days and two years for each of those
322. 13:23respectively in the spring of
323. 13:251997 uh Singleton would go on to murder
324. 13:28another woman
325. 13:29and it was uh a sex worker this time
326. 13:34roxan Hayes he was a lonely depressed
327. 13:3770-year-old man and he was
328. 13:39like why don't you come over to my place
329. 13:42and she's like I need to you know feed
330. 13:44my kids
331. 13:45sure so uh the police found the body
332. 13:49stabbed multiple times in like the upper
333. 13:51body area and her face yeah now
334. 13:57um Singleton's
335. 13:59testimony in this case was that they
336. 14:03were struggling with the knife and she
337. 14:05accidentally stabbed herself multiple
338. 14:06times in the face in the stomach the
339. 14:09chest and the
340. 14:10face H he he claims seems unlikely yeah
341. 14:14he claims that after they were done they
342. 14:18were both naked in his living room
343. 14:22okay and he paid her and then went to
344. 14:26get her a $10 bill for a cab ride cuz
345. 14:30he's a
346. 14:31gentleman don't look at me like that I'm
347. 14:34just
348. 14:35thinking so he goes for his wallet he's
349. 14:40handing her money and she reaches for
350. 14:42his wallet apparently okay he goes to
351. 14:45grab it back and she grabs the knife
352. 14:47laying on the table conveniently that
353. 14:50was there because who doesn't just sit
354. 14:52on the couch and have vegetables on
355. 14:54their coffee table and they're just
356. 14:56cutting it up while they watch TV don't
357. 14:57tell me how to live my life
358. 14:59[Laughter]
359. 15:01so yeah they just he kept trying to get
360. 15:05this knife away from her and you know
361. 15:06she stabbed herself multiple times I
362. 15:09don't think so he never did it and then
363. 15:12he goes on to say that after she
364. 15:15realizes that she got stabbed I don't
365. 15:17know how you don't realize it adrenaline
366. 15:20she's like hold me so so they so they
367. 15:24lay down on the couch no like like he's
368. 15:28he's embracing her right now I don't
369. 15:29know why I'm doing like the arm thing
370. 15:32but you're just picturing a man holding
371. 15:33a dead body yeah well dying body dying
372. 15:36yeah dying okay and then he's like we
373. 15:39need to get you to a hospital cuz you
374. 15:42know he's a good guy you know he doesn't
375. 15:44want her to die he's all right I'll pay
376. 15:45the C take it to the hospital he's like
377. 15:47petting her he's like we need to get you
378. 15:48to a hospital I can't have you be dying
379. 15:51on
380. 15:54me so they get up and try and walk
381. 15:57shocker she collap Colles and [ __ ]
382. 16:00dies well go
383. 16:05figure now again Mary Vincent flies all
384. 16:10the way from California good to Florida
385. 16:13to testify against him he was sentenced
386. 16:17to death this
387. 16:18time except M anticlimactic ending he
388. 16:22dies of cancer before anything can
389. 16:24happen always do how unsatisfying in
390. 16:272001 he just not that I
391. 16:29necessarily for or against the death
392. 16:31penalty that's a lorded question I don't
393. 16:34know M someone else can think about that
394. 16:37but they got it in
395. 16:39Florida and then this old man's just
396. 16:42like I'll beat you to it yeah probably
397. 16:44save the taxpayers some money a little
398. 16:47bit I think that's how that works
399. 16:51right I guess so I mean I I think the
400. 16:55people pay
401. 16:57for that stuff you mean the the death
402. 17:00penalty like or
403. 17:03treatment no the death penalty oh yeah
404. 17:06they pay for it yeah definitely see I'm
405. 17:08learning I don't think they have it now
406. 17:11though in Florida I think there's only I
407. 17:14know Texas still has it I feel like
408. 17:15Florida has to have it that's where all
409. 17:16the weird stuff
410. 17:19happen I'm looking it up I'm looking it
411. 17:25up yeah I
412. 17:27don't I don't know
413. 17:29if it's they still have it in Florida
414. 17:32okay so they still have I mean this was
415. 17:35in 2001 it wasn't that long ago yeah
416. 17:37actually I guess it was a while ago it
417. 17:41was 19 years ago that's about as old as
418. 17:45I am I don't like this
419. 17:48thought yeah how does does that make you
420. 17:51feel old it doesn't make me feel old yet

439. 18:44Hayes he was like he painted the picture
440. 18:47as he didn't want her to
441. 18:49die so he just wanted to stab her a
442. 18:52little bit just a little bit a couple
443. 18:54times it never hurt anyone do you think
444. 18:56when it came to Mary Vincent do you
445. 18:59think it was premeditated do you think
446. 19:02he like got up and he's like I'm going
447. 19:03to try and find a hitchhiker and kill
448. 19:05them or I don't know I guess I've never
449. 19:08thought about that based off the version
450. 19:10of the story I know I guess there's room
451. 19:12for some storytelling with it yeah just
452. 19:16a little bit you would
453. 19:18think he must be screwed up a bit if he
454. 19:20just had available
455. 19:23tools what kind of line of work was he
456. 19:26in I don't well he was um he was is that
457. 19:28Merchant Marine oh right is that though
458. 19:32something you would be like hacksaw like
459. 19:34tools in your van while you're driving
460. 19:37around it's not uncommon to have some
461. 19:41like if you have a van or like a truck
462. 19:43it's not uncommon to have certain tools
463. 19:45cuz from what I understand is he cut her
464. 19:47arms off with like a hatchet oh okay a
465. 19:50hatchet so it seems fairly reasonable to
466. 19:53have a hatchet that seems a little more
467. 19:55believable for some reason compared to a
468. 19:57hacksaw now a sledge Hammer I don't
469. 19:59believe normal people carry a
470. 20:00sledgehammer around in their
471. 20:02vehicle and she was also tied up so he
472. 20:05had rope on him or or twine or something
473. 20:08I would think that he knew he was
474. 20:09capable of it and maybe it was something
475. 20:11he had been thinking about and maybe was
476. 20:12just waiting for the right
477. 20:14moment that's fair cuz so maybe that he
478. 20:17didn't necessarily plan that day like
479. 20:18I'm going to go drive around maybe I'll
480. 20:19find a young girl hitchhiking and then I
481. 20:21can yeah cut I'm sure there lot there's
482. 20:24a lot of Hitchhikers
483. 20:25in maybe he was just planning on finding
484. 20:28a stranger can have to rape and then
485. 20:30like go and kind just got escalated and
486. 20:33he's like well since I have this
487. 20:36stuff I don't
488. 20:39know
489. 20:40uh okay why do you think he would leave
490. 20:44her without making sure that she was
491. 20:47deadz I chopped her arms off well yeah
492. 20:52but now I don't know if I would have
493. 20:54thought of that if I was in her
494. 20:55situation to like jam your stumps down
495. 20:58in mud to stop the
496. 21:00bleeding I probably would have just been
497. 21:02a huge [ __ ] and just laid there and die
498. 21:04I was going to say IID probably just lay
499. 21:05in the ditch and
500. 21:08die maybe I'm wrong I don't I don't know
501. 21:12but I feel like someone chopped off my
502. 21:14arms and' be like just [ __ ] kill me I
503. 21:17don't want to live like this she went on
504. 21:19to like create her own Prosthetics and
505. 21:22stuff like that she's an inspiration so
506. 21:24good for her you know I wouldn't get
507. 21:26over that I would cry until I die and
508. 21:27then I'd be like I have

510. 21:33drugs never mind I'll shut up what no I
511. 21:36just going to say like not drugs for
512. 21:37fine drugs to like just knock me out and
513. 21:40kill me okay you know well those are
514. 21:42kind of fun drugs
515. 21:44well it depends on what you're
516. 21:47into
517. 21:49whatever but still I just wonder if he
518. 21:52would have been able to get away with it
519. 21:55if he had just made sure that she was
520. 21:57dead
521. 21:59so like possible that if he just
522. 22:02properly killed her yeah or it's like
523. 22:04maybe
524. 22:06he maybe he assumed that she was going
525. 22:08to die and he didn't want to finish her
526. 22:10off because it would have been harder on
527. 22:12his conscience well she rolled all the
528. 22:15way down that ditch or he pushed her
529. 22:16down there I don't he's probably like I
530. 22:18don't want to go down that ditch maybe
531. 22:20it was a complete accident like she
532. 22:22accidentally rolled down there and he
533. 22:23was just like ah
534. 22:25[ __ ] so he just got in his vein and left
535. 22:29I I'm just guessing that he assumed
536. 22:33there's no way she's going to survive
537. 22:35she's going to bleed out she's not going
538. 22:36to get up and flag someone down now I
539. 22:40don't know if you came across this in
540. 22:41your research and I could be thinking of
541. 22:42something
542. 22:43else but I
543. 22:45believe with an like a high chance of
544. 22:48being
545. 22:49wrong I
546. 22:52believe that I'm wrong but in this story
547. 22:55I think the the couple that was like
548. 22:57driving by that picked her up they were
549. 22:58like on their honeymoon or something
550. 22:59they're like we got to save this person
551. 23:02they're they need help that's a story
552. 23:04right yeah right and I could be lying I
553. 23:06could be thinking of some other case I
554. 23:08you're probably talking [ __ ] but I love
555. 23:10the way it sounds right that's what
556. 23:12people like about me am I telling you
557. 23:14the truth I really don't even know but I
558. 23:17can deliver it sometimes as long as you
559. 23:20make it sound believable you can just
560. 23:21get away with saying whatever you want
561. 23:23that's what I do yeah especially at work
562. 23:28hi how long should I cook this for um I
563. 23:30don't know I would try this and see if
564. 23:32it works just take the temperature and
565. 23:34if it's not bleeding so I think you're
566. 23:36okay just keep checking it like every
567. 23:37five minutes and then whenever it's done
568. 23:38it's done what's the hard about that you
569. 23:41dummy just imagine that for like aund
570. 23:45customer questions on like Christmas
571. 23:48listen I don't want to talk about that
572. 23:49right now I don't want to think about it
573. 23:51kind of just makes me want to just some
574. 23:53of us haven't been on
575. 23:56vacation okay that sounds like a uo
576. 23:58problem not me some of us have built up
577. 24:00anger that it just keep putting off back
578. 24:03of my
579. 24:04mind it's going to be fine some of us
580. 24:06worked with a terrible person for one
581. 24:08more week while you were on
582. 24:11vacation I mean I I had a great week I
