- 0:04massive airbag recall linked to at least
- 0:06five deaths and dozens of injuries
- 0:08Eyewitness News consumer reporter Susan
- 0:10Hogan has been tracking the story for
- 0:11months she joins us now live in our
- 0:13studio with the latest developments
- 0:16that's right for the first time though
- 0:17members of Congress grilled the maker of
- 0:19those defective airbags which Regulators
- 0:21say have killed or injured dozens of
- 0:24people
- 0:26these defects fast enough frustrated
- 0:28Senators pressed for answers from
- 0:30takata's quality Chief you don't know
- 0:32whether those standards were used the
- 0:34company's defective airbags can inflate
- 0:36suddenly shooting metal pieces into the
- 0:39passenger compartment at least five
- 0:41people have died and dozens have been
- 0:43injured Air Force Lieutenant Stephanie
- 0:45Erdman was blinded in one eye I hope
- 0:47there will be no more mothers taken from
- 0:49their children or no more fathers
- 0:51blinded by the exploding airbags
- 0:53Chrysler and Honda were the only
- 0:55automakers at the Capitol Hill hearing
- 0:57they have not agreed to a Nationwide
- 1:00recall we are deeply sorry Dakota's
- 1:02representative was asked if his company
- 1:04would back one Senator it's hard for me
- 1:07to answer yes or no so if you follow me

- 1:13no and I think your company is making a
- 1:15big mistake in not supporting this

- 1:21admitted his company did not fully
- 1:23comply with federal reporting
- 1:24requirements have correct information on
- 1:27its website or fixed Lieutenant erdman's
- 1:29car in time we have to do better we fail

- 1:45so it could take more than two years to
- 1:48fix the millions of vehicles recalled so

- 1:52now Regulators are calling on Congress
- 1:54to increase the maximum fine tenfold
- 1:57against manufacturers that failed to
- 1:59comply with safety and disclosure laws
- 2:01to 300 million dollars a bill to
- 2:04introduce today would also increase
