  1. 0:00thank you there are a lot of layers to
  2. 0:01peel away on this we want to bring in
  3. 0:03two different perspectives for the
  4. 0:04conversation CNN legal analyst Laura
  5. 0:06coast is a former federal prosecutor
  6. 0:07Leigh Steinberg is a sports agent and
  7. 0:10sports attorney good to have both of you
  8. 0:12with us as we look at this you expected
  9. 0:15this backlash in Brazil they're seeing a
  10. 0:18lot of it as well here in the US lee for
  11. 0:21ryan lochte his career in many ways i
  12. 0:24mean he's he's done well he's made money
  13. 0:26he's been in multiple multiple games
  14. 0:28what's left for him at this point has
  15. 0:31this done his career in here you have a
  16. 0:34athlete who has almost six million
  17. 0:36dollars worth of endorsements from seven
  18. 0:39major endorsers and
  19. 0:41this is an incident which has been
  20. 0:45covered by thousands of different
  21. 0:48reporters both electronic and print and
  22. 0:50is overshadowed all the other Olympians
  23. 0:54who spent their whole lives to get to
  24. 0:56this moment so it's cast a pall over all
  25. 0:59of that and not very popular with all
  26. 1:02our Olympians from Katie ledecky to to
  27. 1:07our fabulous gymnast what he needs to do
  28. 1:11and has needed to do quickly has come
  29. 1:14forward if I were advising him might
  30. 1:16have him go back to Brazil do a press
  31. 1:18conference admit that he was wrong
  32. 1:21apologized to Brazil to the other
  33. 1:26athletes to every constituency admit
  34. 1:29wrong make a gesture towards trying to
  35. 1:32somehow make it right and then he could
  36. 1:35move on he wants to go to another
  37. 1:37Olympics but right now he is a villain
  38. 1:41in the eyes of the American public and
  39. 1:44also the international community so he
  40. 1:47needed to move quickly what happens now
  41. 1:49is you get this viral cycle of Lochte
  42. 1:53villain Lochte villain that goes over
  43. 1:55and over and over again and by the time
  44. 1:56it's done if he doesn't act and these
  45. 1:59other three swimmers don't apologize
  46. 2:01themselves not the committee this will
  47. 2:04be an enduring image that people view
  48. 2:08them through so that's that that's the
  49. 2:09public perception angle of it we
  50. 2:10mentioned you know even just here in the
  51. 2:12US the
  52. 2:13this morning calling him the Lochte mess
  53. 2:15monster which is of course probably not
  54. 2:16what you want to come home to but Laura
  55. 2:18from a legal perspective if he did
  56. 2:20follow lease advice if he goes back to
  57. 2:23Brazil what kind of ramifications could
  58. 2:25he faced what kind of potential charges
  59. 2:27are still a possibility if any at this
  60. 2:29point well it would be providing false
  61. 2:32testimony to a police officer kind of
  62. 2:34like how we think about perjury here in
  63. 2:35United States but I would advise him
  64. 2:37really not to go back to Brazil because
  65. 2:39if he goes back to Brazil he has
  66. 2:41different ramifications and less
  67. 2:42protection than he would if he's
  68. 2:43actually abroad but why people care
  69. 2:45about this case Erika and why the
  70. 2:47perception is so bad is not because it's
  71. 2:49a matter of semantics whether or not he
  72. 2:51believed he was robbed or not the point
  73. 2:53is that's not the story that he gave the
  74. 2:55officers down in Brazil and it took away
  75. 2:57resources from possibly prosecuting
  76. 2:59other crimes and put a stain on Brazil
  77. 3:02that was not necessarily needed to be
  78. 3:03there and so it's when you take a full
  79. 3:05look of false reports of police people
  80. 3:07get very angry particularly when you try
  81. 3:09to press merge the entire nation is
  82. 3:11already grappling with this perception
  83. 3:13that they cannot host a very secure
  84. 3:15Olympics it's same thing at the United
  85. 3:17States there's also the issue of the
  86. 3:20three younger swimmers who are younger
  87. 3:22than Ryan Lochte thers there's been some
  88. 3:24question as to sort of how this all went
  89. 3:27down who may or may not have been the
  90. 3:29ringleader in terms of the story or
  91. 3:30stories that we were hearing what's the
  92. 3:32extent of the damage Lee on these three
  93. 3:36younger swimmers and their careers it it
  94. 3:39has a negative impact on the way they're
  95. 3:42perceived I go through this in damage
  96. 3:46control with American athletes
  97. 3:47occasionally and the lawyers always want
  98. 3:51to have the best facts for their case
  99. 3:54and what I tell the lawyers are the best
  100. 3:57way to leverage your position is have a
  101. 4:00repentant athlete Lee have the athlete
  102. 4:03apologize it takes all the sting out of
  103. 4:05the case but here they've been mum we
  104. 4:08haven't heard a thing from them the
  105. 4:09committee stood in front of them they
  106. 4:12need to step up and take responsibility
  107. 4:14we understand that young men make
  108. 4:17mistakes it's not the hugest thing in
  109. 4:20the world as long as they take
  110. 4:22responsibility and show their repentant
  111. 4:25then the healing process can begin and
  112. 4:28over time it goes away but as long as
  113. 4:31they sit silent and that isn't the
  114. 4:35silence is deafening and they say right
  115. 4:37we'll we'll be watching to see what we
  116. 4:38hear is we saw of course two of them
  117. 4:40just arriving back in the US will
  118. 4:42continue to follow that and the fallout
  119. 4:43lease sign burglar coats appreciate you
  120. 4:45both being with us this morning thank
  121. 4:46you thank you
