  1. 0:00vitamin C supplements and skin serums
  2. 0:02are an utter waste of your hard-earned
  3. 0:04money and there are far better options
  4. 0:05to improve your health which we'll go
  5. 0:07through later in the video excitement
  6. 0:09about vitamin C kicked into overdrive in
  7. 0:11the 1970s where Linus Pauling suggested
  8. 0:14that vitamin C could successfully treat
  9. 0:16and prevent the common cold this is
  10. 0:18because in addition to its antioxidant
  11. 0:20properties vitamin C plays a critical
  12. 0:22role in immune function it's also
  13. 0:24required to build collagen
  14. 0:26neurotransmitters and is heavily
  15. 0:27involved in protein metabolism
  16. 0:29disappointingly though the results from
  17. 0:31clinical studies have been inconsistent
  18. 0:33and a massive Cochrane review was done
  19. 0:35which is at the very top of the evidence
  20. 0:36pyramid and it concluded that vitamin C
  21. 0:39did not reduce the chances of developing
  22. 0:41the common cold and therefore routine
  23. 0:43vitamin C supplementation is not
  24. 0:45justified because of its antioxidant
  25. 0:48properties vitamin C was hoped to reduce
  26. 0:50the chance of heart attacks multiple
  27. 0:52large-scale Studies have been done and
  28. 0:54before I get into the results of those
  29. 0:55trials I want to explain the rationale
  30. 0:57for using 500 milligram dosages the
  31. 1:00recommended daily intake is 90
  32. 1:02milligrams for males and 75 milligrams
  33. 1:04for females to put that into context
  34. 1:07five servings of fruit and vegetables
  35. 1:09can provide more than 200 milligrams of
  36. 1:11Vitamin C but here's the crucial point
  37. 1:13from intakes of 100 milligrams and above
  38. 1:16our cells are fully saturated they've
  39. 1:18got all of the vitamin C that they could
  40. 1:20possibly want and above that dose
  41. 1:22vitamin C is only slightly increased in
  42. 1:24the blood the rest is peed out there are
  43. 1:27liposomal versions of vitamin C which
  44. 1:29are more bioavailable compared to the
  45. 1:31regular versions however liposomal
  46. 1:33vitamin C is not expected to offer any
  47. 1:36further benefits because again our cells
  48. 1:38at 100 milligram dosages and above have
  49. 1:40got all of the vitamin C that they could
  50. 1:42possibly want and they get rid of the
  51. 1:44rest the trials used 500 milligram doses
  52. 1:46because at that dose you're accounting
  53. 1:48for any potential absorption issues that
  54. 1:50some patients may have the first study
  55. 1:53involved over 8 000 women who were
  56. 1:55followed up for an average of over nine
  57. 1:57years unfortunately vitamin C had no
  58. 1:59effect on any of the cardiovascular
  59. 2:01outcomes the same result was found in a
  60. 2:03massive French study involving over 13
  61. 2:06000 people in a randomized double-blind
  62. 2:08placebo-controlled trial participants
  63. 2:10were followed up for seven and a half
  64. 2:12years and there were no differences in
  65. 2:14cardiovascular disease or all cause
  66. 2:16death threats furthermore a Cochrane
  67. 2:18review combined all of the relevant
  68. 2:20studies together and they concluded that
  69. 2:22currently there is no evidence to
  70. 2:23suggest that vitamin C supplements
  71. 2:25reduce the risk of cardiovascular
  72. 2:27disease there are far better options to
  73. 2:29reduce your chance of heart attacks
  74. 2:30which we'll go through at the end of the
  75. 2:32video moving on to cancer a randomized
  76. 2:34placebo-controlled study involving over
  77. 2:3614 000 participants who were followed up
  78. 2:39for 10 years found no effect for vitamin
  79. 2:41C supplements on reducing cancer rates
  80. 2:43the same results were found in the
  81. 2:45women's study where again we could see
  82. 2:47no effect on cancer rates one
  83. 2:49interesting area of research however is
  84. 2:51intravenous vitamin C because if you
  85. 2:53inject vitamin C directly into patients
  86. 2:56you achieve significantly larger vitamin
  87. 2:58C levels and concentrate situations of
  88. 3:00that magnitude they are selectively
  89. 3:02toxic to cancer cells in the lab however
  90. 3:05we don't have any large
  91. 3:06placebo-controlled studies so it's
  92. 3:08premature to determine what role IV
  93. 3:11vitamin C may play in the treatment of
  94. 3:13cancer but I do look forward to
  95. 3:14reporting on future studies in that area
  96. 3:16of research the caveat however is that
  97. 3:18in certain circumstances IV vitamin C is
  98. 3:21toxic a study published in the New
  99. 3:23England Journal of Medicine last year
  100. 3:25for intensive care patients found that
  101. 3:27those patients who received intravenous
  102. 3:29vitamin C had a higher risk of death or
  103. 3:32persistent organ dysfunction which is
  104. 3:34why this therapy needs careful research
  105. 3:36it should not be recommended until we
  106. 3:38have those studies the next reported
  107. 3:40benefit is skin Health but our skin
  108. 3:42cells can get all of the vitamin C that
  109. 3:44they could possibly want from a great
  110. 3:45diet alone there are many vitamin C skin
  111. 3:48serums which claim to have benefits for
  112. 3:50skin Health however almost all of these
  113. 3:52claims have no scientific testing to
  114. 3:54back them up plus a correctly formulated
  115. 3:56vitamin C skin serum is incredibly
  116. 3:58costly because regular vitamin C it's
  117. 4:01unstable when exposed to oxygen making
  118. 4:03it useless there are far better options
  119. 4:05for skin Health at the end of the video
  120. 4:07so what about the risks of vitamin C
  121. 4:09supplements well generally it has low
  122. 4:11toxicity and it's not believed to cause
  123. 4:13serious adverse health risks at high
  124. 4:16intakes the most common side effects
  125. 4:18include things like diarrhea or gastro
  126. 4:20discomfort there's also the potential of
  127. 4:22causing kidney stones so people with a
  128. 4:23history of kidney stones they need to
  129. 4:25tread carefully with taking vitamin C
  130. 4:27supplements but instead of wasting your
  131. 4:29money on vitamin C supplements get your
  132. 4:31vitamin C from a great diet filled with
  133. 4:34fruit and vegetables and thankfully the
  134. 4:36war against fruit from the keto diet
  135. 4:38gurus is coming to an end make sure to
  136. 4:40regularly exercise prioritize sleep and
  137. 4:43if you do want to take supplements to
  138. 4:44improve skin Health consider things like
  139. 4:46collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid
  140. 4:48and I've got a video about the
  141. 4:50hyaluronic acid research here a massive
  142. 4:52thank you to do notage.org for their ten
  143. 4:55thousand dollar donation to my rapamycin
  144. 4:56study they are a health research
  145. 4:58organization and to benefit it from the
