- 0:00it started life as a television and
- 0:04telephone factory built for the
- 0:06electronics company Philips back in the
- 0:081950s when they moved out this building
- 0:11was left empty abandoned until now look
- 0:15up there's a sign on the side the new
- 0:18residents have just moved in we're now
- 0:21seven storeys above the city we've
- 0:24escaped from the exhaust fumes and were
- 0:26inside a large urban oasis surrounded by
- 0:31sweet scented Tomatoes silky over jeans
- 0:34and a patchwork of microgreens if you
- 0:39can be here and smell and fuel and taste
- 0:42everything all at once then you're
- 0:44totally consumed with what you're doing
- 0:45you're not just showing a tomato in your
- 0:47face so that you can have your lunch
- 0:49quickly the farm is designed to be self
- 0:52sustainable and produce zero waste they
- 0:55might not realize it but these tilapia
- 0:58are playing a vital role the fish are
- 1:01doing two things for us here they're
- 1:03they're producing our fertilizer for our
- 1:05plants which is really important because
- 1:07in the city you don't have cows and pigs
- 1:09or sheep to produce the nutrients so we
- 1:12do that with the fish another thing that
- 1:14it does is creates a source of protein
- 1:15in the city as well Mark's ambition is
- 1:19to supply a thousand families a week his
- 1:23initial challenge will be to convince
- 1:25those customers to swap their
- 1:27comparatively cheap supermarket produce
- 1:30I think it's a little bit more expensive
- 1:32therefore it really has to differentiate
- 1:35itself from what we now already find in
- 1:37the supermarket so it should be ultra
- 1:39fresh ultra tasty and the other thing is
- 1:41it has a high tech nature therefore some
- 1:44consumers will like this but others will
- 1:47probably prefer the traditional
- 1:48agriculture out in the field with the
- 1:51light from the Sun and water from the
- 1:53rain
- 1:55enthusiastic chef was the first to buy
- 1:58into the concepts if this pioneering
- 2:01project is a success the team are hoping
- 2:04to inspire people in places like Glasgow
- 2:07Manchester and Cardiff to cultivate
- 2:10their own urban farmlands in the sky on
- 2:14a Harlequin BBC news in The Hague
