  1. 0:00good evening everyone it's 10 o'clock
  2. 0:01here in the east coast and we begin as
  3. 0:02we do every night keeping them honest
  4. 0:03looking for facts not trying to offer
  5. 0:05opinions or play favorites not
  6. 0:06supporting one political side or another
  7. 0:08you can get that on plenty of other news
  8. 0:09channels we're just looking for facts
  9. 0:11finding the truth calling out hypocrisy
  10. 0:13and there's no bigger example of that
  11. 0:14tonight of hypocrisy or possibly ever in
  12. 0:17the history of sports than what happened
  13. 0:19to American Icon Lance Armstrong in the
  14. 0:21last 24 hours he cheated he lied about
  15. 0:24it for years and years and now he's
  16. 0:25reportedly coming clean somewhat how
  17. 0:28much did Lance Armstrong say in the
  18. 0:30interview he just taped with Oprah
  19. 0:31Winfrey he reportedly admits to using
  20. 0:34performance-enhancing drugs to win
  21. 0:36bicycle races and Oprah says he was
  22. 0:38quote pretty forthcoming but that he did
  23. 0:40not come clean in the manner she
  24. 0:42expected exactly what that means is not
  25. 0:44clear Oprah's too good to give it all
  26. 0:47away I choose not to characterize I
  27. 0:50would rather um people make their own
  28. 0:53decisions about whether he was contrite
  29. 0:55or not I I I felt that he was thoughtful
  30. 0:58I thought that he was serious I thought
  31. 1:00that he certainly had prepared himself
  32. 1:06for this moment I would say that he met
  33. 1:09the moment and at the end of it um two
  34. 1:12and a half literally 2 and a half hours
  35. 1:14we we both were pretty exhausted and um
  36. 1:18I I would say I was satisfied well
  37. 1:20whatever ultimately made it to tape and
  38. 1:22we won't know till later this week
  39. 1:23longtime followers of Armstrong say they
  40. 1:25are not ready to take anything he says
  41. 1:27that face value reporters teammates even
  42. 1:29one time friends they all describe the
  43. 1:31seven time torto France winner cancer
  44. 1:33survivor and charity founder as a born
  45. 1:35manipulator who do whatever it takes for
  46. 1:37only one person Lance Armstrong keeping
  47. 1:40him honest they point to a record of
  48. 1:41lying that Rivals his record of winning
  49. 1:45we're sick and tired of these
  50. 1:46allegations and we're going to do
  51. 1:47everything we can uh to fight them
  52. 1:50they're absolutely untrue I've said it
  53. 1:52for seven years I've said it for longer
  54. 1:53than seven years I have never doped I
  55. 1:56can say it again but I've said it for
  56. 1:58seven years it doesn't help how could it
  57. 1:59have taken place when I've never taken
  58. 2:02performance in missing drugs go back to
  59. 2:041995 one of your former teammates Steven
  60. 2:06schwart he was riding with you he a kiwi
  61. 2:09on the Motorola team he has told ESPN on
  62. 2:11the record and on camera that back in
  63. 2:13'95 when the team was struggling that
  64. 2:15you announced to the team that you were
  65. 2:17going to begin doping and you were
  66. 2:18encouraging other teammates to do the
  67. 2:20same what do you say to that account now
  68. 2:22again complete nonsense if it can't be
  69. 2:24any clearer then I've never taken drugs
  70. 2:27then incidents like that could never
  71. 2:29have happened why would I then enter
  72. 2:31into a sport and dope myself up and risk
  73. 2:33my life again that's crazy I would never
  74. 2:34do that that's no no way my case I mean
  75. 2:38I came out of a of a life-threatening
  76. 2:40disease I was on my deathbed you think
  77. 2:41I'm going to come back into a sport and
  78. 2:42say okay okay doctor give me everything
  79. 2:44you got I just want to go fast no way
  80. 2:47would never do that that was Lance
  81. 2:50Armstrong denying it all time and time
  82. 2:51again since then US anti-doping agency
  83. 2:54has put out more than a thousand pages
  84. 2:56of allegations and evidence against
  85. 2:58Armstrong and his teammates calling AR
  86. 2:59Armstrong's drug ring the most
  87. 3:01sophisticated in the history of sports
  88. 3:03he's been stripped of his seven tour to
  89. 3:05France titles barred from competition
  90. 3:07has stepped down from the Liv strong
  91. 3:08charity that he founded and until now
  92. 3:10he's denied everything not only that as
  93. 3:12you'll see he's got a long history of
  94. 3:14lashing out at people who tried to
  95. 3:16expose him the people who dared to
  96. 3:17suggest Armstrong was on something other
  97. 3:19than his bike that was in many cases a
  98. 3:22brave stance to take because in almost
  99. 3:24every case it was followed by a Lance
  100. 3:25Armstrong sponsored scorched Earth Earth
  101. 3:28campaign Lance how you feel Frankie
  102. 3:30andreo would have once described Lance
  103. 3:32Armstrong as one of his closest friends
  104. 3:34they were teammates in the 1990s Frankie
  105. 3:36and his wife Betsy frequently socialized
  106. 3:38with Armstrong this picture shows the
  107. 3:40three of them cooking dinner together in
  108. 3:431995 but in what would become a familiar
  109. 3:45patter and Armstrong turned on the
  110. 3:47andreos after they testified in 2006
  111. 3:50lawsuit alleging Armstrong used
  112. 3:53performance enhancing drugs Armstrong
  113. 3:55vehemently denied the charges and it
  114. 3:58didn't stop there Betsy andreo says
  115. 4:00Armstrong vilified her in the Press
  116. 4:03calling her vindictive and jealous and
  117. 4:05portrayed her husband as bitter because
  118. 4:07his cycling contract with Armstrong's
  119. 4:09team was not renewed after the 2000
  120. 4:11season and then there was this a
  121. 4:14voicemail left for Betsy andreo in 2008
  122. 4:17by a friend and Associate of Armstrong I
  123. 4:19hope for me break some baseball that
  124. 4:21over your head but I also hope that one
  125. 4:24day you have adversity in your life and
  126. 4:27you have some type of tragedy
  127. 4:30it's pathetic Betsy I thought you were a
  128. 4:33better person than that Betsy andreo
  129. 4:36provided the voicemail to the New York
  130. 4:38daily news as evidence of the threats
  131. 4:40and intimidation she says they suffered
  132. 4:42and then there's Greg Lamont the only
  133. 4:44American to win the world's most
  134. 4:46grueling race before Armstrong went on
  135. 4:48his string of seven straight wins the
  136. 4:51relationship between the two men was
  137. 4:52anything but close especially after
  138. 4:55lemon questioned Armstrong's association
  139. 4:57with a controversial Italian doctor
  140. 4:59named micheli Ferrari Frankie andreo
  141. 5:02said Armstrong was clearly upset at Lem
  142. 5:05man's comments and in an affidavit
  143. 5:07andreo said I recall Lance saying words
  144. 5:10the effect of who does Greg think he is
  145. 5:12talking about Ferrari I'm going to take
  146. 5:14him down and he did Armstrong had great
  147. 5:18influence with the bike sponsor Tre
  148. 5:20which dropped its support of the lon
  149. 5:22brand damaging Lem man's bike
  150. 5:25business Armstrong also intimidated his
  151. 5:27critics and Rivals during competition
  152. 5:30in the 2004 tour to France Armstrong
  153. 5:33comfortably held the Race's overall lead
  154. 5:35but surprised everyone when he chased
  155. 5:37down philipo Simeone why it turned out
  156. 5:40it was only to punish Simeone to prove a
  157. 5:43point Simeone had crossed Armstrong in
  158. 5:46the past by testifying against Dr
  159. 5:48Ferrari about doping Armstrong publicly
  160. 5:51called Simeone a liar and told him
  161. 5:53privately he could quote destroy him
  162. 5:56after catching him this gesture from
  163. 5:57Armstrong during the race was is widely
  164. 6:00seen to be directed towards Simeone a
  165. 6:02warning to stay silent former teammate
  166. 6:05Tyler Hamilton followed a Code of
  167. 6:07Silence and lied about doping until this
  168. 6:0960 Minutes interview in 2011 you saw
  169. 6:13Lance Armstrong inject
  170. 6:16[Music]
  171. 6:17EPO yeah like we all
  172. 6:20did like I did many many times after
  173. 6:24that interview aired Hamilton began to
  174. 6:26cooperate with a federal investigation
  175. 6:28into Armstrong he was physically
  176. 6:30accosted by Armstrong inside a
  177. 6:32restaurant according to an affidavit and
  178. 6:34Armstrong told Hamilton he'd make his
  179. 6:36life a living hell why would they say
  180. 6:38these things in interview with ESPN
  181. 6:40Armstrong was asked about his former
  182. 6:42friends teammates and Associates who
  183. 6:44testified about his doping he had only
  184. 6:46this to say I've surrounded myself with
  185. 6:49at times um questionable people and and
  186. 6:52I've not in the past been great with
  187. 6:54when when you know when Riders leave
  188. 6:56teams or relationships end uh perhaps I
  189. 6:59haven't hand that properly and and I
  190. 7:00admit that freely and and and personally
  191. 7:03people hate that uh I would hate it too
  192. 7:06um but you know why people would lie and
  193. 7:08tell stories I mean some of them
  194. 7:09obviously were paid some of them uh had
  195. 7:12other motives that's that's
  196. 7:14clear so he's lying there you heard a
  197. 7:16bit from Tyler Hamilton there he and
  198. 7:18Daniel Coyle have
  199. 7:29time sports writer Juliet
  200. 7:32mcer Danielle what I don't understand
  201. 7:34really is why Armstrong is doing this
  202. 7:37now because just a few months ago he had
  203. 7:39a chance to avoid lifetime banishment
  204. 7:40the US Ada had invited him to come clean
  205. 7:44to be part of the solution he turned
  206. 7:45them down flat so what happened between
  207. 7:48then and now what changed this is a
  208. 7:50perfect lens into the way Lance's brain
  209. 7:52works he's really good at figuring out
  210. 7:55complex situations looking at them in a
  211. 7:56very binary way and figuring out a path
  212. 7:58forward you know it's not about being
  213. 8:00consistent with him it's about winning
  214. 8:02and that brain is really built for that
  215. 8:04so at this point he figured the best
  216. 8:06path forward was to go to Oprah and
  217. 8:08that's what he's doing but the problem
  218. 8:10that he faces is that you can win the
  219. 8:12Tour to France but it's hard to win a
  220. 8:13confession that has to do with genuine
  221. 8:15feeling it has to do with Contrition but
  222. 8:18Juliet I mean you were saying that the
  223. 8:19most important thing to remember is that
  224. 8:21Armstrong is an athlete that he's not in
  225. 8:23this to say sorry or clean up cycling or
  226. 8:25help charity he wants to compete in
  227. 8:27competitions and he can't do that now
  228. 8:30exactly I think the difference between
  229. 8:31several months ago and now is that he's
  230. 8:34had several months of no competition and
  231. 8:36for a guy like Lance Armstrong that must
  232. 8:37be torture he's been a athlete since
  233. 8:39he's just been little kid like a
  234. 8:41teenager he was a professional
  235. 8:42triathlete and really barely finished
  236. 8:45high school because of his Triathlon
  237. 8:47career and he's had a lot of time to
  238. 8:49think about how he is lonely how he
  239. 8:52doesn't have the agulation of fans at
  240. 8:53the finish line and he has nobody to
  241. 8:55beat right now and it's driving him nuts
  242. 8:57and Roger legally I mean there's a whole
  243. 9:00bunch of reasons why he should not have
  244. 9:01done this
  245. 9:03right yeah I you know I I hear what your
  246. 9:05what the other guests are saying but as
  247. 9:07a lawyer this it goes against everything
  248. 9:09that I know and I'm you know I'm not the
  249. 9:11only one that knows the liability he's
  250. 9:13facing he has wonderful lawyers who have
  251. 9:15given him advice over the years but he's
  252. 9:17looking at in excess if everything goes
  253. 9:19wrong of judgments in excess of perhaps
  254. 9:22$100 million I am still waiting to
  255. 9:24actually see what he see how much he
  256. 9:26really confesses and what he confesses
  257. 9:29too legally I mean what is who does he
  258. 9:32owe money to if he's uh I mean depending
  259. 9:35on who decides to sue him or currently
  260. 9:37who's suing him well there's a
  261. 9:39whistleblowers lawsuit that's going on
  262. 9:41right now that uh Floyd Landis has
  263. 9:44brought and that the justice department
  264. 9:46may join and that has to do with all of
  265. 9:48the money he got from the US Postal
  266. 9:50Service um and the question is did he
  267. 9:53get it under false pretenses because
  268. 9:54under his contract he said that he would
  269. 9:56do nothing that would bring him
  270. 9:57embarrassment and not use drugs
  271. 9:59and so if he gets up and admits that he
  272. 10:02breached that contract uh Under The
  273. 10:04Whistleblower statute he not only has to
  274. 10:06pay back all the money he has he has
  275. 10:08taken uh but could get hit with treble
  276. 10:10damages which means three times the
  277. 10:12amount of money he's taken it is pretty
  278. 10:14go ahead this is what makes Lance Lance
  279. 10:17he likes risk this is why he succeeded
  280. 10:19in this very corrupt world of cycling
  281. 10:21for so long it's why as we describe in
  282. 10:23our book they were smuggling bags of
  283. 10:25blood underneath dog kennels into the
  284. 10:27tour they were giving transfusions on
  285. 10:28the bus bus during the tour he doesn't
  286. 10:31shy away from a risk and that's what
  287. 10:33this is and he's made the calculation
  288. 10:34he's got a net worth over $100 million
  289. 10:36he probably won't lose all of it I mean
  290. 10:38you think he's going to have to pay back
  291. 10:40some of these lawsuit he'll pay back
  292. 10:41some he'll settle I mean the government
  293. 10:42usually settles these sort of cases the
  294. 10:44rest of them often can settle so let's
  295. 10:46say he loses 50 million bucks he's still
  296. 10:48got a fair amount he's not going to
  297. 10:50starve and he will more importantly have
  298. 10:52his narrative back have his his life as
  299. 10:54a competitive athlete back and the
  300. 10:56question is is he going to apologize to
  301. 10:58the people he heard along the way you
  302. 11:00know this we talk about this as if he's
  303. 11:01the only part of the story but in fact
  304. 11:04uh he's not he's the story is much
  305. 11:05bigger than just him I mean he's got
  306. 11:07great PR but but I mean as as you and I
  307. 11:09talked about before Juliet I mean he was
  308. 11:11a jerk to an awful lot of people I mean
  309. 11:13he sought to destroy people who had
  310. 11:16testified against him who had spoken the
  311. 11:18truth I think that jerk is an
  312. 11:20understatement I think a lot of those
  313. 11:22people I mean are devastated right now
  314. 11:25and I don't really know what to to think
  315. 11:27when he's calling some of these people
  316. 11:28up to apologize
  317. 11:29actually spoke to a few people that he's
  318. 11:31reached out to and they and they're like
  319. 11:34dumbfounded they don't know whether to
  320. 11:35believe him or not Julia did you see him
  321. 11:37threaten people reporters who reported
  322. 11:40things that he felt were
  323. 11:43inappropriate well I mean he's threaten
  324. 11:45lawsuits uh many many times against
  325. 11:47reporters including one that he actually
  326. 11:49won a Lial lawsuit uh against the Sunday
  327. 11:52Times of London when the writer David
  328. 11:54Walsh who was one of his earliest uh
  329. 11:57naysayers shall we say published some
  330. 11:58information
  331. 12:00in the paper that said that he adoped he
  332. 12:01won that lawsuit and of course the
  333. 12:03Sunday Times of London is asking for
  334. 12:04that money back right now but he was a
  335. 12:07master at intimidating people he had
  336. 12:09this great story going on he was a fairy
  337. 12:11tale story from the very first time he
  338. 12:13won the Tour to France and people were
  339. 12:14enamored with it that's including many
  340. 12:16of the journalists who were covering it
  341. 12:19and if anybody wrote anything that was
  342. 12:21negative he sometimes would call you on
  343. 12:23the phone in the morning yelling at you
  344. 12:25or criticizing you or he would actually
  345. 12:28blackball you and and not give you any
  346. 12:30interviews if you if you wrote anything
  347. 12:32negative and for a journalist who's who
  348. 12:35made their money or made their living
  349. 12:36covering cycling or covering Lance
  350. 12:38Armstrong to not get access to Lance
  351. 12:40that that meant they were dead in the
  352. 12:42water so he had a lot of power can he
  353. 12:44portray himself as just one of many
  354. 12:46people on his team who don't because I
  355. 12:48read an article in the times I think it
  356. 12:50was that seemed to indicate that was
  357. 12:51sort of the way he was going to spin
  358. 12:53this that he wasn't at the epicenter of
  359. 12:55this he can try he can try to do that
  360. 12:58but I think it's going to be
  361. 12:59difficult for him because of the
  362. 13:01Thousand pages of usada evidence that
  363. 13:03paint a very different picture because
  364. 13:04of the book The Secret race that paints
  365. 13:06a very different picture this is about
  366. 13:08power it's not really about drugs
  367. 13:09Armstrong wielded a tremendous amount of
  368. 13:12economic political sporting power and he
  369. 13:14used it ruthlessly cuz Lance Armstrong
  370. 13:16called the shots on that team I mean he
  371. 13:18was the star of the team everybody was
  372. 13:19there to make sure he won right he was
  373. 13:22the Tony Soprano they were literally
  374. 13:24extensions of his body you know their
  375. 13:26power was his power and that's how he
  376. 13:28used it and when you crossed him he cut
  377. 13:30you dead you were gone it's going to be
  378. 13:32interesting Juliet to see how he plays
  379. 13:34this this interview I mean they taped I
  380. 13:36guess for two and a half hours Oprah's
  381. 13:38going to air this o over two nights um
  382. 13:41and she said that she was prepared she
  383. 13:43had done a lot of reading she'd watched
  384. 13:44a lot of his interviews she was prepared
